Introduction Imagine an Indian city full of women on the street corners: talking, smiling, breast-feeding, sharing corporate notes or scheduling protest meetings. Imagine footpaths spilling over as they drink tea and chat about marriage, cricket and the new blockbuster of old and young women watching the world move by. Imagine women sitting at the Nukad focusing on world politics in saris, shorts, salwars and skirts and dissecting the growing sensex. If you can imagine this, you're imagining a radically different place. Since women don't loiter, it is different. A familiar sight in the city is men hanging out. At a paanwalla or lounge on a park bench, a man can pause for a cigarette. He may stop and look at the sea, or drink chai at a tea stall. Even late into the night, he could wander the streets. Maybe women don't. There is an unspoken presumption that a loitering woman is up to no good. Either she's mad or bad or dangerous to society. Of course, no one says this out loud, honestly. But every little girl is brought up to learn that from one 'sheltered' room to another, she must walk a straight line between home and school, home and workplace, home and the home of her friend or relative. It never chooses to make public places safe for her when society wishes to keep a woman safe. Alternatively, it tries to lock her up at home or at school or college or in a friend's home. It is about the city as much as it is about gender. In the context of the twenty first century of urban India, my design dissertation interacts with feminist ideas and questions definitions associated with the concepts of risk, protection, modernity and citizenship. 01
The Public Gaze
नज़र
How are you feeling?
The thought of someone staring at you all the time. It's a horror to see someone objectifying a woman in public. It induces fear in the mind and pain in the body. It's the existing quality of space, as well as the person's thoughts while gazing at you, that makes the situation unpleasant. It has a targeted, choked, and distressed feel to it. Isn't it crazy that only half of the population has been through this?
and the prying eye
Reimagining Urbanscapes: Breaking Gender Boundaries Shreya Pathrabe I Design Dissertation
02
“Will you let me know when you get home?”
That is the last thing we ask a female friend when we say goodbye. All women know that they are at risk of being mugged on the dark, winding streets, or that they can be harassed or abused in a poorly lit public transport station, empty streets or vacant plots.
Reimagining Urbanscapes: Breaking Gender Boundaries Shreya Pathrabe I Design Dissertation
03
"The cities are planned, designed by men and for men, such as 6' tall good looking police man" - Le Corbusier
Men, women, gender minorities and people of different abilities tend to use the public space in different ways: people all have different needs and routines when it comes to our access to the city.
A man may not think 10 times before a dark, shady place but a woman might.
But this modernist worldview failed to account for women, as well as children, elderly and disabled people – anyone, in fact, who fell outside this statuesque ideal.

To establish a natural and safe atmosphere for women. To re-imagine cities from a women’s perspective - The Urban Vision/The Urban Safety.
Aim and Objectives 1
Creating safe zones in the city.
3
Solving problem on community based level
2
To make public inserts safer for women.
5
Understanding layers of the street which causes shady places
3
Working on grassroot levelno gender bias in public space
6
Not to create a gendered space but to design equal streets.

05
Scope and limitations SCOPE
Creating a design module for a small node taking into consideration the entire planning of the locality. Urban space public safety as the main target. Urban design based on public safety must improve space safety quality while giving attention to such inherent pursuits of urban design as function, access, convenience, comfort, and public activity. A safe, coordinative, orderly, and versatile urban space environment can be built only by integrating improving space safety quality with other property and goals. Safety in terms of proportion of the street. Women/child/ and old friendly safe public spaces.
Reimagining Urbanscapes: Breaking Gender Boundaries Shreya Pathrabe I Design Dissertation
LIMITATIONS To satisfy the requirement list of the university - multiple site development is required. So the scale of the site/locality should be handable. Getting a known area - site personally known city/town/locality/neighborhood to have a larger impact on the community.
RESEARCH QUESTIONS What is the relation between gender and architecture? How can design help to heal past the wounds and prevent future violence? How can spaces be build to heal? How can architecture positively contribute to the rehabilitation and well-being of women and children suffering from violence? What is the future of safe public spaces in India? Is violence the next pandemic in India and worldwide? How to create gender perspectives in urban planning? How sexual division impacts urban form, accessibilities facilities, public spaces, and urban violence?

मंबुई What happens in these cities and around them?
सपनो क नगरी
As Mumbai is the biggest metropolitan city and business hub, there are no. of women and girls traveling here from neighboring cities for work opportunities and education. Private towns around the city, such as Navi Mumbai, have risen, where people travel to CST and the eastern suburbs for work and training and return home at night. Therefore, after late evening, the streets are silent. Over the years, the rise of urban sprawl has created residential towns making the main cities as commercial hubs. As these residential towns are created the concept of 'eyes on the street' has vanished making the town all shut after a certain time slot. Thus hampering the movement of females (after a certain time slot). Inward housing planning and gated communities are also a reason that the streets are getting empty day by day.
Reimagining Urbanscapes: Breaking Gender Boundaries Shreya Pathrabe I Design Dissertation
07
The structure of these resident towns has an inward planning typology. Growth and development of new townships and their planning have orientated towards the main city as a working place and the area of residence as a completely different part without common ground. Over time the planning of these resident towns has gone looking inward-looking towards ( a central common space). Public and urban spaces are generally utilized when there's more pedestrian movement around. One such town is Sanpada strategically located at the start point of Navi Mumbai. It is a fully residential town where people strictly travel for work and education outside of the town. The range of town isn't more than 500m hence making it a walkable town. The streets, squares, and public spaces form a vital element in any neighborhood and city. These are the single most important component of this town that add to its livability. The number of unsafe, underutilized, and run-down spaces that lie right before our eyes, ignored, the in-between, as we go about our daily chores is amazing. The re-imagining of these spaces and making them into potential and vibrant urban public spaces is what this design dissertation aims for.

Superblock of Sant Antoni / Leku Studio, Spain
Case Study
Characterised by its uniform, regular and extensive grid, shows a solid, mixed and highly densified city with a consolidated public space. It redefines the urban order by merging blocks into bigger units. A people-centred planning that offers the opportunity to gain new public spaces by creating proximity squares in the chamfer corners and green-healthy streets where previously there were cars.

Albanian Carpet, Albania
Case Study Understandings: The design of the flooring here is inspired by their motifs and geometric patterns of their traditional carpet. The material used is paver blocks which are more sustainable than paint. This material is used everywhere in this space eg. seatings pathways and the flow of design is not broken because of change of element. This pattern has further inspired the details of bike rails and lights used in the space

Wetland Planting
Floating Wetland
Wetland plants are defined as those species normally found growing in wetlands of all kinds, either in or on the water, or where soils are flooded or saturated long enough for anaerobic conditions to develop in the root zone.
Floating treatment wetlands (FTWs) or islands are small artificial platforms that allow these aquatic emergent plants to grow in water that is typically too deep for them. Their roots spread through the floating islands and down into the water creating dense columns of roots with lots of surface area.

WOMEN INTO CONSTRUCTION ‘How can a woman do these things?’ Evaluating pathways of mobility for female construction workers (Socio-economic empowerment of women construction workers)
NIRMANA ORGANIZATION • It is estimated that 94% of India’s workforce are in unorganised sector that contribute to about 50% of its economy (or GDP). Unorganised sector is characterised by lack of any single employer who addresses workers’ rights such as safety, social security like health-care / disability / old-age pension etc. Condition of Female Workers: The International Labour Organisation says that Women represent: i) 50% of population ii) 30% of the labour force iii) Perform 60% of all working hours iv) Receive 10% of the world’s Income v) Own less than 1% of the world’s property. We see NIRMANA as an economic justice organisation that believes in equal allocation of benefits among all participants of the economy.

DALYAN NGO MHT - Mahila Housing Trust Upgrading skills of women working in the construction industry Mahila Housing Trust founded Karmika School of Construction Workers in 2004, with the aim to provide skill-based training to disadvantaged women working as unskilled labor in the construction industry. Majority of the women trained by the Karmika School are manual laborers, working mostly as head-load workers. Despite doing the hardest work, they are worst paid and enjoy no job security or benefits. The Karmika School provides training in various construction skills in order to move these women out of the unskilled category into the skilled labor force, which is better paid and more in demand. Karmika has trained several thousands of women so far. 80% of them reported higher income and better employability after the training. The three-year project supported by Dalyan will focus on strategically improving the marketability of these women in the employment market.

We are always thinking about big, radical changes. Change happens from small things making a big impact on the community or the issue addressed. Even the tiniest of thoughts can have a big impact. Providing a minimal change with a larger impact is what I look for. You have the power to make a difference. Home is where change begins. ‘Charity begins at home'
