Tree shading during summers.
Tree allowing sunlight during winters
ORIENTATION OF HOUSES
CHAURAH
More than 50% of the houses in Ghuria are East Oriented. This is because the morning sunlight during the day is mild. During the afternoon, as the sun moves towards the south direction; the front open space gets shadow of chaura, kuda and kotha.
BAKHARI
KUDA
VOLUME AND HIERARCHY The ‘Thallo’ central open space acts as an unifying element for all the spaces present around it. This maintains a hierarchy from private to semi-private, to a public space by acting as a transitional space.
The openings are smaller in size to reduce the impact of sand storms and to control cold and hot wind. The maximum dimension of the window is around 400mm x 400mm.
The plinth is an extension of the house, an open space for seating and doing the daily household chores. It also acts as a barrier against sand and prevents it from getting inside the structure. The area and height of plinth varies from house to house.
The openings which are in opposite direction of the wind are kept open(southwest in summer and northeast in winter). The smaller openings also prevent sand from entering inside the structure during sandstorm.
The use of materials (walls > roof > flooring > plaster)
The deciduous vegetation acts as a shading device during summers. Whereas in winter, it allows sunlight to enter through the openings.
