From the President Hello to all of our Shropshire friends. Hopefully lambing is going well for everyone. After a mild start to our winter it sure has gotten frigid. Please remember as you are evaluating your lamb crop to have some great ewe lambs to nominate for the futurity program. Our futurity program is one of the premier futurities in the sheep industry. It will only continue to flourish if we keep great ewes available. Thank you to everyone who continues to support our programs, especially for our youth. Good luck as lambing continues and please remember to mentor new shrop breeders. Jim Percival
2018 Stars of Louisville Sale The first Shropshire event at the recent North American Livestock Expo was the 10th Stars of Louisville Sale. Who would have thought that the idea of having a sale in conjunction with the 2009 125th Anniversary of the American Shropshire Registry Association would run for 10 continuous years? This year was the smallest sale yet in its history with only 10 head, all very nice, consigned. Steve Myers of Rushsylvania, Ohio evaluated the ewes for the sale order, choosing Erik Mrozinski’s March ewe lamb as his champion. Danny Westlake of Marysville, Ohio served again as auctioneer and he sold her for $1750 to Lane Falch of Missouri. Randy and Julie Rife had the Reserve Champion, another March ewe lamb that was chosen by Erik Mrozinski for $900. Two bred yearling ewes were sold, the first being consigned by Schoolhouse Shropshires and sold to Taylor Kemp of Missouri for $600. The second one was a John Melvin entry selling to Lane Falch for $700.There were two January ewe lambs, a Rife lamb that brought $600 from Faith Calvin from Missouri and a Mrozinski entry going for $475 to Mike Fox of Ohio. Rife sold the next three March ewe lambs for $600, $550 and $650 to Greenbrier Acres of Maryland, Kylie Adams of Illinois and Lane Falch.The nine head sold averaged $758.

All seven ewe lambs sold were nominated to the 2019 Yearling Ewe Futurity with four of those sold to juniors. Many thanks go to the committee, sale consignors and buyers for their continued support of this event. The event will take place again in 2019. Breeders of elite Shropshire females are encouraged to hold one back to offer at this sale next November 16 in Louisville. More information is available from the Shropshire office.

From the Secretary Here we are halfway through the first month of 2019 already! Looking back on last year, we see lots of breed get-togethers at shows and sales. Many sheep were shown and sold to be shown again. Several junior members purchased their first Shropshires and had excellent results in major shows and the futurity program. There are new kids coming along all the time with a few families with young children cultivating the lit’l ones to get big enough to be really involved and a few new additions to the flocks. The young people are the future of the breed and we are excited to watch their progress. Registration stats for the year are stable and encouraging. In 2018, 2480 sheep were recorded, down slightly from 2017. Transfers numbered 1301, up 3.4 percent. There were 144 paid junior memberships (up 9.9 percent); 165 adult memberships (up 3.8 percent); and 24 new members. These numbers tell me that breeders are staying in Shropshire production and new ones are coming in and more sheep are being sold to these new members. I would guess that current feed prices and personal meat markets are responsible for the slight decline in registrations. I’ve compared these figures with those of 10 years ago and they are all at a slight increase. The overall financial status is still in the black with a very positive gain over the past decade. I’m thankful for that and also for those who contribute to the programs of the association in order to keep them running. We had a great show in Louisville last November with strong numbers in both the open and junior shows. Shropshires continue to hold one of the larger shows at the North American. Many congratulations to the exhibitors for bringing such a great set of sheep for the promotion of the breed. We expect the youth programs to be strong again in 2019. Plans are underway again for the futurity, college scholarships, Starter Flock and royalty. If you see Rylie Miller, please express _______ Page 4
your appreciation for her help with the Junior Shropshire Association and its activities. Rylie was hired last May as the Junior Coordinator and is organizing some fundraising to insure the continuation of the Shropshire youth events. Every little bit helps and all contributions will be recognized. We appreciate the efforts of Craig King of Missouri who was brought on the Board of Directors in the fall of 2016 to finish Matthew Anderson’s term representing the South West District. Though he was on the board for only two years he always contributed to discussions.We wish Craig success in his future endeavors.Taking Craig’s place is Adam Moore of Greentop, Mo. We trust he will be a productive member on the board to see the association through the next three years. There will be a new event at the Ohio Sale in May to help educate breeders and buyers about the breed standards. Details are not complete yet but attendees will have an opportunity to look at live sheep with varying characteristics and to discuss them. Judges do not appreciate having sheep with poor type to evaluate but might have to use those sheep in his lineup making for a lot of discussion on the sidelines and creating hard feelings. Let’s all continue to be mindful of the breed character of the Shropshires we present this year. Please get your registration work in early enough to have papers for your events and double check your applications for accuracy. The registry program helps me find issues and sometimes doesn’t allow a registration to go through as presented because there are issues with the owner record, duplicates or mothers that lamb on two different dates. Save us both some time and make sure your records are correct. I am looking forward to the progression of the Shropshire breed and its people and hope to chat with breeders at the spring events. National Sale set for Eaton May 9-11 The Shropshire Classic Sale, part of the Big Ohio Weekend, will host the National Sale again this year. The dates are May 9-11 and the place is the Preble County Fairgrounds in Eaton, Ohio. This serves as a venue for major sales for several breeds. Shropshires will show and sell as the last breed on Friday and Saturday.Adam Heffelfinger will be judge the Shropshires. Further details and entry information can be found at www.bannersheepmagazine. com. With the late show time on Friday the Ohio Shropshire Association will not be hosting a dinner this year but will provide coffee and donuts on Saturday morning. The very popular Ewe Preview makes a return this year in the morning. All classes will be displayed on wether racks for up close inspection and is a great opportunity to check out the sheep. The

The Shropshire Royalty and the winner of the 2019 Starter Flock will also be introduced on show day. In an effort to increase conversation and education about Shropshire Breed Character, there will be a chance to look over two groups of sheep with varying characteristics. It will be held similar to a judging contest using the average of the board members’ interpretation of the types of these sheep to create the official placings. Juniors participating will be graded and high scores will receive a sale credit. A new Breed Standards publication with photos will be available.This event will be coordinated by R.J. Creamer, Rick Adams and David High with the help of the Shropshire breed type committee More information on this opportunity and other sale details will appear in the May issue of the Voice. November 2018 Board Meeting Minutes Nov. 11, Louisville, Ky.
The meeting was called to order at 3 p.m. by President Jim Percival. Present were Danny Rogers, Mary Anne Keck, Darrell Dockter, Re Call, Mike Elsbury, Jim Percival, Jim Gruenhagen, Emily Petzel, Tom Slutz, Mandy Curtiss, Caleb Fritz, Paul Young, Rick Adams. Absent were Craig King and R.J. Creamer. Rylie Miller was present as Junior Coordinator and Becky Peterson as Secretary. Secretary’s Report – The minutes from the May board meeting had been previously distributed. Mandy Curtis moved to accept them as printed. Jim Gruenhagen seconded. No discussion. Motion passed. Report accepted. Treasurer’s Report – Becky had distributed the financial report as of October 31.The Balance Sheet showed an increase in assets to $65,579.72 over the same period last year. The Harvard Bank money had been moved

to Massachusetts last January and three new CD’s were opened in May. The Profit & Loss statement showed a net income of $4201.14 as of October 31. Becky went through the different accounts citing differences from the previous year.Also provided P&L compared to the budget for the entire year showing so far to be in good shape. At this time, there was a break in the treasurer’s report to allow the representatives of the Heartland Group, Brett Oelke and Millie Moore, to discuss details of the Midwest Stud Ram Sale. Brett stated that the Shropshires are increasing and represented two percent of the entire sale. He stated that Tim Fleener will be judging in 2019. Shropshires will show first on Wednesday. Entry fee will increase to $30 which will allow two photos and a video of each entry for the online catalog. $50 will be charged for registrations not provided in time for the sale. Wether sires and dams (not Shrops) will be shown by weight and not birthdate. Electronic health papers will be issued to out-of- state buyers at a one-time fee of $5. A memorial will be planned for Curt Overcash. Breed social events will be allowed and promoted and futurity fees will be deducted. Treasurer’s report then resumed. Becky reported the office statistics. 2018 showed 2435 registrations, 1239 transfers, 140 junior memberships, 164 returning adult members and 22 new adult members.The report of the restricted funds was reviewed. There was no further discussion relative to the financial report. Darrell Dockter moved to accept with a second from Mandy Curtis. Motion passed, report accepted. Committee Reports: Voice & Promotion – Darrell reported that ad sales were down this year. There is a regular advertising list that Rinda sends. Becky said she would also send to her list in hopes to get more people involved. Stars of Louisville Sale – Becky reported that the sale was smaller with 10 head entered. It was hard to get breeders to consign. There weren’t enough entries in time to have the catalog included with the Voice. It was then mailed to all of the people that had ever got_______ Page 9
ten a buyer number, emailed to the membership, and posted on the website. Nine head sold at an average of $758. The sale profited by $84.34. Discussion followed. It was felt that the committee needs to work harder to get commitments to enter sheep earlier in the year. Mandy Curtis was appointed as chairman of the Sale Committee for 2019. Production – Breeders are still encouraged to participate in NSIP. “Pedigree Wizard” is a computer program available through NSIP to help with the submission of data. Becky noted that the Shrop registration program will soon have NSIP ID numbers displayed on the registration certificate with a link to the searchable NSIP database with current data. Breed Character – Rick Adams reported that there are plans to have a Breed Character Education & Evaluation display at the National Sale in Eaton. It could be run as a “judging contest” with sale credit(s) offered as a prize to youth participants. Two classes are planned. Emily Petzel and Jim Gruenhagen offered to help fund the sale credit. the event can be held for review and conversation. R.J. Creamer, Rick Adams and Dave High would organize this event. Darrel Dockter moved to go ahead with this opportunity. Mandy Curtis seconded. Motion passed. Also Mary Anne Keck is working with Deb Petzel to complete the Breed Standards publication to have it ready for the January teleconference and hopefully printed in time for Eaton. It will be used with the above event in Eaton. Starter Flock – This has been a very successful program for five years. Sponsorships were light in 2018 with $729 pledged and paid. $325 was left over from 2017 for a total fund of $1054. The 2018 winner, Layne Lingley, purchased two ewe lambs at Eaton ($1212 paid by Starter Flock program) and one in an online sale (paid by Lingley) so there is still $288 payable for the 2018 award, resulting in a deficit of $446 to begin 2019. Discussion followed. It was suggested that all purchase documentation be submitted by the last purchase sale (November, Stars of Louisville). Discussion

followed regarding raising funds. It was agreed that personal phone calls from previous winners and older members of the junior association would generate more sponsorships than emails. Rylie Miller will work with the youth members toward keeping the program solvent. Futurity – The Ewe Lamb and Yearling Ewe Futurity has wrapped up today. Rick Adams, Mark McCabe and Danny Rogers worked in the ring to confirm scrapie tags and record placings. Becky went through the 2018 nomination summary. There have been some unclear nominations from the online sales. There were 41 yearling ewes nominated, 21 purchased by juniors and 12 tracked. There were 168 ewe lambs nominated, 76 purchased by juniors and 33 tracked. In 2019, online sale consignors will be issued a form to be completed before the sale happens with a list of the futurity nominations and tag numbers and will be responsible for nomination fees. Becky noted that Banner Sale Management is NOT deducting nomination fees so collec-

tion for the Ohio Sale fees is a large project. The Futurity Committee will look at collection problems. Becky noted that the regions for the Ewe Lamb Futurity are unbalanced and may need to be adjusted.There was discussion about nominating individual lambs at multiple sales. The committee will look at that as well as other rules for 2019 and report back to the board teleconference. Junior Activities – Junior Coordinator Rylie Miller presented a report with a request for funding for the junior association activities. She noted that much of the Shropshire activities are directed toward promoting the junior members and listed some of the programs/events for 2019. She requested new items such as an ad in the Voice, a month on the website (September) homepage, funds for token gifts at AAJS/NAILE and gifts for junior members aging out for a total budget of $2768. Nothing was done so there was no chance to order for pre-NAILE. Mary Anne Keck said she would send some new ideas for a hopeful December printing. Perhaps Janet Dockter could help with artwork. Winter type items would be sweatshirts, long-sleeved Tees and athletic shirts. Junior Coordinator Position – Rylie remarked that she would like to have the same position for 2019-2020 (currently June through following May). Board will address this in the spring. Discussion followed regarding her earlier funding requests. Mike Elsbury moved to allot $1500 for the junior activities for the coming year. This would include a waived “Senior Membership Fee” for juniors continuing as adults. Rick Adams seconded. Motion passed. Board Member Responsibilities – As per the last board meeting Jim Gruenhagen dis-
tributed ASRA Board Roles and Responsibilities and also Conflict of Interest Disclosure Statements and for the board members to review. Discussion followed.These documents are to work in accordance with the Bylaws and to protect the members and the association. Mary Anne Keck moved to accept the two documents, Mandy Curtiss seconded. Motion passed.The statements were all signed by board members present. Slick Shearing Issues – The Ohio Sale Committee has requested that leg wool/ belly wool etc. be monitored at the National Sale. Discussion followed. It was decided that someone (not a consignor) would deal with this at the sale in May. Also Rick Adams and Mary Anne Keck would watch entries during the NAILE Open Show. Shears will be available ringside if there are any issues. Also noted that the AAJS received ASRA funds and offers double futurity points and would qualify as a national event and would be monitored the same way. site showing what is acceptable. NAILE Shropshire Show – Becky reported that there were enough entries to make the splits needed for the ewe lamb classes. Class splits are made to be as even as possible with the check-in information available. Becky noted that the NAILE staff (Heartland Group) has been very easy to work with and very helpful when there are issues. IRS Penalty Update – Becky reported that the IRS has removed the penalty imposed for the 2015-2016 year. Thank you to Steve Elsbury for assisting with this. He would not submit an invoice for this work. Discussion followed. Mary Anne Keck moved to waive the annual dues fee for Steve Elsbury for two years for his efforts. Motion was seconded by Tom Slutz. Motion passed. New Business: Directors and Officers Insurance – Board had asked for a quote. Becky had gotten a quote from her agent that found the Surety Bond we have. A “Flexi Plus Five” policy from Philadelphia Insurance Co. estimate is $750 to

$1000. Agent would help to complete application. No action taken. Board requests policy coverage information. 2019 National Sale – Shropshire Classic at Big Ohio Sale in Eaton. RJ Creamer reported that Shrops would show and sell last this year. Therefore the Ohio Association would not be able to arrange the Friday night dinner. The Preview can be held Saturday morning. Coffee and donuts will be provided. A short discussion followed regarding the announcements and website auction that has normally taken place at dinner. President Jim Percival assigned the task to Becky to handle. Other new Business – Paul Young (Pennsylvannia and South Director from Tennessee) requests a “South East Regional Show” for Wilson County Fair Open Show. Date is August 23, 2019. Show is open to anyone. Show generally has 400 head. Pays 10 places. Paul Young moved to allow the Wilson County Fair hold a regional Shropshire Show in 2019. Seconded by Mike Elsbury. Motion passed.

Tom Slutz stated that he had been approached by multiple people asking that the Shropshire Royalty representatives should not be wearing their sashes while showing sheep in the showring. The AAJS and the NAILE have different rules. ASRA states the junior member age is under the age of 22 years. The AAJS states “The All-American Junior Sheep Show is open to youngsters who are 21 years of age or less on January 1st”. NAILE states “not more than 21 years of age on the day of the show…”. Discussion followed. Mandy Curtis moved to make the ASRA Junior age limit 21 years of age as of January 1st. Seconded by Mary Anne Keck. Motion passed. Becky will update membership form as well as information for other shows. Mike Elsbury requested the regional youth money for Indiana for 2018. It had not been done earlier. Becky will issue a check.
At this time, Secretary Becky Peterson was excused from the room for the executive session regarding her contract. Election of Officers – noted that the following board member terms were up: RJ Creamer, Rick Adams, Jim Gruenhagen, Craig King, Mary Anne Keck, and Re Call. District associations have renominated RJ (OH), Rick (IL) and Re (NE/NY) leaving North Central District and Southwest District nominations to come from the Annual Meeting. Jim Percival requested nominations for the Office of President. Darrell Dockter nominated Rick Adams. Rick Adams nominated Jim Percival. Jim Gruenhagen moved nominations be closed. There was a paper ballot showing nine votes for Jim Percival and two votes for Rick Adams. Jim then requested nominations for Vice President. Rick Adams nominated RJ Creamer (incumbent and willing to serve again). Jim Gruenhagen moved to close nominations. Minutes of the Annual Meeting of the Members Nov. 12, Louisville, Ky.
President Jim Percival called the meeting to order at 6:05 p.m. He introduced the board members present. Twenty-one members signed in, including 2018 Shropshire Princess Vivian Stephenson and the 2018 Shropshire Queen Rylie Miller. Secretary’s Report – The minutes of the 2017 Annual Meeting were distributed. A motion to accept them as printed was made by Rob Sando and seconded by Jim Gruenhagen. There were no corrections and the motion passed. Minutes accepted. Treasurer’s Report – Becky presented the registration statistics for the first 10 months of 2018 which showed 2435 registrations (down five head). 1239 transfers (up 106 head), 140 junior members (up nine), 164 adult members (up eight) and 22 new members (down three). She then ran through the Balance Sheet for the same period which showed total assets of $65,579.72, an increase of $5034.85 over 2017. She noted differences in Accounts Receivable and Payable over the previous period depend on the status of the October Voice ad invoices and the bill for its production.The Accounts Receivable show $2284.29, which does include outstanding invoices for the NAILE matching entry fees and does not include the Voice ad billing. The Accounts Payable include the production bill for the Voice. Becky then presented the Profit & Loss Report for the period, again noting differences in the Voice ads and production and other significant changes over last year. She noted that the Starter Flock fund is already short for this year and more attention needs to be paid to that program funding. The net income for the period is $4201.14, a decrease of $6188.77. There was no discussion about the financial report. Rick Adams moved to accept it and Mary Anne Keck seconded the motion. Motion passed. The 2018 Futurity Program has wrapped up during the NAILE Junior Show. Becky listed __________________ February 2019
the regional and overall ewe lamb winners and the yearling ewe winner. She reported that there were 41 yearling ewes nominated, 21 purchased by juniors and 12 shown and tracked. There were 168 ewe lambs nominated, 76 purchased by juniors and 33 tracked. The board and Futurity Committee will be looking at the futurity program to be sure it continues to grow and be strong for the young people. Youth Report – Jim introduced Rylie Miller as the Junior Coordinator. Rylie worked with the kids at the All-American Junior Show to raise funds for the junior association activities. She ran the NAILE junior meeting and a skillathon and provided NAILE feed scoops to all of the exhibitors in the Junior Shropshire Show. Jim noted that the junior program was strong with 67 exhibitors entered. Report on Board Meeting 11/11/18 – Jim Percival highlighted some of the points discussed. The Stars of Louisville Sale averaged $758 on nine head. He asked the breeders to consider holding onto one more good ewe to offer in the sale next year to try to reach the 15 head consignment needed. Breeders are also encouraged to participate in NSIP. There will be a hands-on breed character evaluation at the sale in Eaton in May. The Starter Flock will continue but needs more sponsorship to be as successful as it has been in the last five years.The Shropshire Store ran last spring and will hopefully have another store next month. Paul Young reported that the Wilson County Fair in Tennessee requested a South East Regional Shropshire show in August 2019. The board approved this with no expenditure. Election of Directors The Bylaws state “All Directors for districts not having an active state or regional Shropshire association shall be elected at the annual meeting of the members. A district which has an active, recognized Shropshire association may elect its director(s) through the association.” The Ohio Shropshire Association has nominated RJ Creamer to serve another term as the Ohio director. The North East Shropshire Breeders has nominated Re Call to serve an_______ Page 19
other term to represent the New England/ New York District. The Illinois Shropshire Association nominates Rick Adams for the Illinois District. The North Central District has one seat available, currently held by Jim Gruenhagen. Jim asked for nominations from the floor. Rick Adams nominated Jim Gruenhagen to serve another term, seconded by Mary Anne Keck. Darrell Dockter moved to close nominations for the North Central District and to cast a unanimous ballot for Jim Gruenhagen, seconded by Mary Anne Keck. Motion passed. The Southwest District has two seats open, one currently held by Mary Anne Keck. Darrell Dockter nominated Mary Anne Keck to another term, seconded by Tom Slutz. Rick Adams and Jim Gruenhagen moved to close nominations and cast one ballot for Mary Anne Keck. Motion passed. Jim Gruenhagen nominated Adam Moore to fill the second seat in the South West District, now held by Craig King, seconded by Brad Slutz. Tom Slutz moved to close nominations and cast one ballot for Adam Moore, seconded by Jon Nicholson. Motion passed. Old Business There is a ballot in the October Voice to nominate judges for the 2019 National Show at NAILE. There is also a ballot box here. Jim asked that members please complete either one and submit it to the office by Dec. 1. New Business Charlotte Stephenson provided photos of sheep exhibited at two Midwest state fairs that exhibited very poor breed type. Dis-
cussion followed. Becky will provide Breed Standards to those shows to make available to their judges. Breed Standards are always provided to judges of shows where ASRA money is involved. Becky noted that the Breed Standards will be printed this year along with a photo array and used at the event in Eaton and made available to judges and breeders. Randy Rife suggested that the board members gather a list of the major fairs in their districts and provide Becky with a list and the judges so she can distribute this information. Jon Nicholson suggested that the deadline for the Starter Flock application be moved up to March 1st to allow recipient to utilize earlier online sales. Jim stated he will take that up with the Starter Flock Committee. Jim asked that those present sign a card for Jason Heeg who was severely injured in an accident en route to NAILE. Becky has an assortment of cards and will also have them at ringside during the open show.The board and membership wishes Jason a speedy recovery. Tickets were provided to all in attendance for the drawing of a small number of the junior show feed scoops available along with some items that Re Call brought along. The youngsters present help to pull tickets and deliver the items to the winners. This activity always helps with a lighthearted atmosphere. At this point with no further business to come before the membership, Rob Sando moved to adjourn with a second by Charlotte Stephenson. Starter Flock
The Starter Flock Program is a project undertaken by the National Junior Shropshire Sheep Association to award a group of Shropshire ewes to a deserving youngster new to the breed. After five successful years with 48 applicants, the program continues in 2019. To apply, you are required to complete an application and submit an essay to the Shropshire office that should include background information about yourself and your interest in sheep. This document should illustrate your goals and intentions with the animals should you win the award.There should also be a budget included in the paperwork. You are asked to type your essay and submit it by March 15. Please include your mailing address and telephone number. All applicants should be between the ages of 8 and 20.The winner of the award will be notified and will receive a $1500 credit voucher from the ASRA to purchase two or more Shropshire ewes of his or her choice at any of the Shropshire sales in 2019. Application information will be available on www.shropshires.org and from the Shropshire office. To ensure the success of this program, financial contributions are needed for this worthwhile cause. Contact Secretary Becky Peterson with your support or inquiries. SE Regional Show The Wilson County Fair in Lebanon, Tenn. is offering a chance to show Shropshires in a new venue in 2019 by hosting an open regional show on Friday, Aug. 23. Sheep may arrive on Thursday and are released after their show. Southdowns, and probably Dorpers, will have regionals on the same day. Other breeds will be exhibited on Saturday. A skillathon will be held all day Friday for youths involved in these regional shows and a lamb luncheon is available for all. The usual classes will be offered with eight places paying $30, $25, $20, $18, $15, $12, $10 and $5. Lebanon is located about 30 miles east of Nashville and is just north of Interstate 40. American Shropshire Juniors By Rylie Miller, Indiana Junior Coordinator Back in November at the North American International Livestock Exposition, the juniors met to hold their annual meeting. They enjoyed a presentation by Melanie Barkley on keeping flock records, and even participated in a skillathon. The new officers of the American Shropshire Junior Association were voted on at this meeting for this upcoming year. Isabella Wolford is the president, Lane Falch is the vice president, Vivian Stephenson is the secretary, and Addisen Nicholson is the treasurer. The overall futurity winners were also announced this weekend: Drake Slutz being the Ewe Lamb Futurity Winner and Kennedy Algire the Yearling Ewe Futurity Winner. New this year, at the sale in Eaton, the juniors will be holding a judging contest for all Shropshire Association members (yes, the juniors and the adults) based on breed characteristics. There will be prizes for the junior members and it will be a great learning opportunity. Also, all junior members should be on the lookout for Rylie Miller at the sale, she will have a gift for all juniors! All-American Junior Show to expand in 2019 by another half day With the last two years’ shows being relatively huge, the July “Sheepcation” event expands by half a day in 2019 at the State Fairgrounds in Hutchinson, Kansas. The need to expand is a good problem to have proving that the event is important to so many young sheep exhibitors and their families. The All-American Junior Show welcomes the Suffolk breed this year. The dates are July 4-7. The barn opens at noon on July 2 and all sheep must be penned by noon on Thursday, July 4. Exhibitor registration check-in begins Thursday morning, followed by the beginning of the early event activities such as Lamb Camp, skillathon, promotion items, the judging contest, leadline and an ice cream social. Friday jumps awake at 8 a.m. with the opening ceremonies and all of the showmanship classes. Virtual shearing returns and some of
the other activities continue. Breed classes will begin at 2 p.m. on Friday with three rings each day with judges: Tim Hall, Matt Scramlin and Ryan Hendricks. The Blome Pizza Party and the three-onthree basketball will finish up Friday at the Hutchinson Sports Arena. Saturday, continues with breed classes all day and a Kansas BBQ for dinner. Matt Scramlin will sort the Shropshires as the first breed on Sunday, July 7, followed by the three-on-three basketball and the closing ceremonies. General sponsorship is always needed. Look for the big ticket items to be auctioned off at the Big Ohio Sale and the Midwest Stud Ram Sale. As usual, raffle tickets will be available at many spring events and gift baskets/ items for the silent auction at the show are always appreciated. Specific funding for the

Successful Royalty program to continue After a royal success in 2018, the ASRA will seek youth royalty again this year. Applications will be accepted for the following categories: Ages 5-10 for Little Bo Peep or Little Boy Blue; Ages 11-16 for Shropshire Princess or Prince; and Ages 17-21 for Shropshire Queen or Ambassador. The winners should be responsible for attending one major Shropshire sale (Eaton, Stars of Louisville, etc.) and two designated shows (All-American, NAILE, the national sale, etc.) Duties will include presenting awards at such events. Winners will be awarded sashes. One title will be awarded in each category each year for a maximum of three. Both girls and boys are encouraged to apply. Applications are available on the youth page of the Shropshire website or can be requested from the office. Applications are due in the office March 15th. The selection will be made by a committee appointed by the Board of Directors. Winners will be notified in time to make plans to attend the Classic Sale in Eaton, Ohio where the presentations will be made during the judging for the National Sale. Sheep booster inducted into livestock breeder’s hall of fame By Tom C. Doran For Illinois Agrinews Publications Reprinted with permission Mike Anderson’s first try at raising sheep got off to a rough start. The then nine-year-old had just joined 4-H and with the support of his folks, Gordon and Dorothea, he got a bred Suffolk ewe to care for on the family’s rural Paxton, Ill. farm. The good news was the ewe gave birth to twins. Unfortunately, the twins died a few days after birth as did the ewe shortly thereafter. It was no doubt tough for the young lad, but Anderson never wavered from that experience and purchased his first purebred Shropshire ewe the following year from Everett Glasgow of Allerton farms, Monticello and began showing in 4-H. He’s been raising Shropshires ever since, and over the next 60 years, he developed a nationally renowned reputation for raising quality purebred sheep and collected numer-

ous honors at shows throughout the Midwest and beyond. Anderson’s commitment to the sheep industry was recognized Dec. 7, 2018 when he was inducted into the Land of Lincoln Purebred Livestock Breeders Association’s Hall of Fame. His portrait joins other livestock industry leaders at the Illinois Department of Agriculture. “When I think about Mike and all of the things that he’s done, I think about his dedication and his commitment to his home, to community, to this organization and the Shropshire organization,” Doug Anderson, retired high school ag teacher and long-time friend, said during the induction presentation. “It’s a real honor. When they said at our meeting last January that I was going to be the inductee, I was quite honored to think that they would recognize me.You don’t really think that you maybe deserve it, or maybe,‘oh, I didn’t do that much to deserve an award like this,’ ’’ Mike Anderson said. The humble new hall of famer’s body of work exemplifies how important he has been to the industry over the years. He was 12 years old when he first showed Shropshires at the Illinois State Fair and continued to raise the purebreds through high school. After graduating from high school, Anderson attended Illinois Commercial College where he earned a degree in accounting. He served in the Air Force Reserve from 1969 to 1974. His career beyond raising sheep and helping on the family farm began in 1967, when he worked at Meadow Gold Dairy, Champaign, followed by employment at Rantoul-based Mid-Continental telephone company from 1968-1974. Anderson then worked at Eastern Illini Electric Cooperative, Paxton, from 1974 to his retirement in 2010, where he was in the __________________ Shropshire Voice
accounting department and was then transferred to the operations and engineering department. He continues to be an usher for events at the University of Illinois State Farm Center. He started there in 1974. Anderson’s full-time employment off the farm didn’t deter him from continuing his interest in raising purebred sheep, and a chance meeting at the Illinois State Fair in 1977 provided an opportunity and developed lifelong friendships. It was then that Anderson met Darrell and Paula Rincker of Stewardson, who also shared his interest and enthusiasm in the purebred sheep industry. The Rinckers started showing Anderson’s sheep in 1978 and earned champion ewe honors. Darrell continued to show Mike’s sheep until his passing in 2010. Darrell’s son, Dusty, continued showing the sheep until Mike’s retirement in 2013. Anderson’s Shropshires have garnered a long list of honors over the years, including Indiana State Fair premier exhibitor, 1978 to 1995; Ohio State Fair premier exhibitor each of the three years entered; Illinois State Fair premier exhibitor multiple years; North American International Livestock Exposition premier exhibitor numerous times at Louisville, Ky.; and national champion honors at competitions in Ohio, Kentucky, Oklahoma and California. His final honor came in 2014 when his ewe, “Dorothy” was named national reserve champion. Fittingly, that last ewe Mike raised and showed was named after his mother. Spreading Excellence His commitment to excellence was evident when he purchased a ram, “2nd Century,” from the University of Connecticut in 1984 at the Centennial National Shropshire sale in Peoria. The ram put Anderson on the map in the Shropshire breed. The ram was ahead of his time in phenotype and many lambs were produced from this sire and sold nationwide. Beyond the ribbons and hardware Anderson’s Shropshires received over the years, he’s

He also has been a judge three times at the national show at the North American International Livestock Exposition, as well as a judge at Indiana,Wisconsin, Payallup and Washington State Fairs. Anderson’s involvement in the purebred livestock industry goes beyond his farm and shows. He served on the LLPLBA board from 1994 to 2014 and was president of the organization in 2011-12. Anderson was elected director of the American Shropshire Registry Association in 1983. He was elected the president of the organization in 1987 and held that post for three years. He served on the board for 21 years, never missing a meeting. He’s also been a member of the Illinois Shropshire Association for over 50 years, where he’s held the posts of president, vice president, secretary, treasurer and board member. Anderson is also the sheep superintendent for the Ford County Fair. Locally, Anderson is a member of the Paxton United Methodist Church, where he’s served as trustee chairman and finance chairman of the church council; a member of the Paxton-Buckley Local FFA Alumni Association _______ Page 45
and a Patton Township trustee. Anderson said it’s an honor to join the list of so many other purebred livestock boosters who paved the way for the industry over the years. The list includes Anderson’s former neighbor who was among the original group to start the association. “It’s been privilege to be in the purebred livestock association,” he said. “This thing about dedication and commitment just keeps coming to mind for me when
I think about Mike, and that is truly a testament to his dedication in virtually everything he does,” Doug Anderson said. “Mike believes in leadership for himself and respect for others. When you think of all of the years he served in leadership capacities with the different organizations, I know in my community Mike is one of the most respected people there. I’m not aware of a more honest and fair person than Mike Anderson.”

Steven Allen Pickett
Steven Allen Pickett, 39, passed away Oct. 13, 2018. He was born in Bartholomew County, Ind. on July 17, 1979 to Gary Pickett and Gail Cody Wall. Steve graduated from Edinburgh High School in 1997, and worked as the maintenance supervisor for Republic Services. He married Hannah Schopmeyer on July 7, 2007, a long-time Shropshire breeder.They attended Zion United Church of Christ. Steve loved spending time with his family. In his free time he enjoyed being outdoors, hunting, fishing and camping. Being a diesel mechanic by trade, he also enjoyed working on vehicles. He also mentored two children

like they were his own, Sarah and Rachel Swank. Steve was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Elvin and Clara Pickett as well as his maternal grandparents, George and Margie Cody. My father always went to the barn and checked the livestock before bed. …The barn, late at night, in the cold winter, is the most peaceful place in all the world. I can see why God chose the stable for the birthplace of His Son. I believe one can be closer to God in a barn with livestock than anywhere else. The cows are quiet, the sheep are lying down, many with lambs close by. Comforting soft sounds come from the hogs. This has always been my favorite place and time to sit and thank God for His many blessings. I thank my father, too, for showing me the most peaceful place in the world. McKerrow Farms
Since my Dad bought some Shropshire ewes for us kids back in the fall of 1961, the McKerrow name was most prestigious. Ten years later Emil Hartzell asked if I would drive his car with him and his wife, Evie, to the July 1971 Sale. We got there mid-afternoon on Friday, checked out the sheep and enjoyed a great evening meal on the lawn with Shropshire folks from coast to coast. We stayed with Bud Hanson a few miles away both Friday and Saturday nights. Julie and I were married in June of 1973 and Emil wanted Julie and I to drive them to the McKerrow sale five weeks later. I bought a nice set of twin ewe lambs toward the end of the sale that proved to be a great addition to our young flock. This was their ninth and final production sale. They had scheduled one for July of 1975, but this letter was sent out just a few weeks ahead announcing it would be their dispersal:
Dear Friend, We are holding a dispersal sale of the McKerrow Shropshire Flock at the farm on Saturday, July 26, 1975. All of our tops will be exposed for sale. A small number of our ewes will be brought into the ring in pairs and will be sold “Buyer’s Choice.” The remaining one will be kept. Many, many years with a dynamic influence on our beloved Shropshire breed. I asked Rinda to print these group pictures of some of McKerrow’s winning flocks. Study the really awesome breed character especially the group of ewes on the alfalfa pasture with Gavin keeping them together. The following was written by Doug Chambers in the 1984 100 Year Centennial Book: George A. McKerrow In 1924 George A. McKerrow took the reins as 14th president of the American Shropshire Registry Association. There would be little contradiction to the claim that the one family most nearly synonymous with the first century of American Shropshires was McKerrow and Sons of Pewaukee, Wis. The _______ Page 48
dynasty began with George, a man of such unselfish energy he was chosen for leadership in nearly every enterprise he undertook. He was a skilled breeder, showman and businessman, a noted public speaker, famous for his renditions of Scottish songs and active in community, state and national affairs. His life reads like the evolution of the U.S. sheep industry. George became a shepherd at eight years of age when his step-father gave him 10 old ewes. At 13 he won his first county-fair blue ribbon with American Merinos. In 1876 he acquired a flock of purebred Cotswolds. These rams were in great demand at $25 per head for crossing on Merino ewes in Waukeshaw County. Two years later McKerrow took over a Southdown flock, descendants of two rams from Queen Victoria’s estate, which had been selected and sent to America as a gift by the Prince of Wales. For 20 years this flock won many championships. In the same year, McKerrow began importing Oxfords from Canada, and later from England. Until after the 2nd World War, his flock provided many of the foundation animals for American’s leading breeders of Oxfords, as well as nearly monopolizing the show circuit. The Shropshire flock was started in 1882, two years before the American Association was founded. In 1894, when put in charge of Wisconsin Farmer’s Institutes, which required a lot of travel, he decided to cut down on chores by accepting a good offer for his 100ewe flock. His two oldest boys, George, 14 and William, 12, soon persuaded their mother to suggest bringing back their old favorites, and in 1898 a new Shropshire flock was started. Gavin, ultimately succeeded his father as head of the domain), a nationally acclaimed Guernsey herd was developed and there were at least four stock farms around the area under McKerrow management. George McKerrow roamed the western livestock world judging and trading in breeding stock, making many visits to the leading flocks in the U.S., Canada and Great Britain, where he addressed the Royal Agricultural Society. He judged at the first International Livestock Exposition in 1900 and represented the industry in Washington, D.C., several times. His writings and talks about his travels and observations were filled with useful ideas. Among the confirmed honors he is known to have received, the most cherished was having his portrait hung in the Saddle and Sirloin Club Portrait Gallery. He served as president of the American Oxford Down Record, the American Romney Breeders and the American Shropshire Registry Associations and probably of others not uncovered in research for this history. It was, however, in the ‘get-
of-sire’ category that George A. McKerrow staked out his claim; three generations of skilled, active livestock breeders followed in his footsteps. Gavin McKerrow Gavin McKerrow was elected president in 1938. Gavin was George’s youngest son and the second Wisconsinite repeating his family’s name as head of the ASRA. He was born and lived his life at the big house at farm #1 between Pewaukee and Hartland. Childhood illness made him seem frail all of his 80-plus years, but he grew up deeply imbued with the family tradition and international reputation; in his lifetime he accentuated the heritage, becoming himself a powerful influence in purebred livestock, community and business affairs. Like his father, Gavin was a good speaker; a perennial specialty being his concise, moralistic deeply-moving benedictions. He possessed a keen eye for excellent breeding animals, a phenomenal memory for pedigrees, loved the show ring and had a reputation as an intense competitor. In addition to continuing the top-

ranked Shropshire and Oxford flocks and serving as president for both breeds he built up a fine Guernsey herd and was president of the American Guernsey Cattle Club. Gavin was a skillful breed improver and among the first to sense and capitalize on changing demands. He judged cattle and sheep all over America, but probably his greatest impact on the purebred industry was his organizational skill and systematic approach to the business of breeding, promoting and selling his products.The biennial McKerrow production sales, often with leading guests consignors, set the industry pattern. Gavin had a knack of finding affluent buyers, but he gladly helped finance or provide temporary accommodations for beginners with little but ambition for collateral. He helped organize and spent his active lifetime as president-manager of what was at that time the largest milk processing plant in the country, the Golden Guernsey Dairy Cooperative, with over 500 members. Will McKerrow Will McKerrow was elected president and thus came to pass another of the historical chain of events linking the McKerrow ‘Clan” with the Shropshire Association. As we have seen, the only state to produce father-son Shrop presidents (not once, but three times), was the Badger State of Wisconsin, so this
land of lakes and dairy cows was the only place lightning struck three times. When Will McKerrow took the gavel from Bob Thurman he followed his grandfather George and his father Gavin as Shropshire presidents. But that rare feat was not the only similarity. Like his forebears, “Will’ also served as president of the Oxford Sheep Association and the American Guernsey Cattle Club; judged sheep and dairy cattle at many big shows and succeeded his father as the head of the Golden Guernsey Cooperative for eight years. He went beyond these ‘family traditions’ to serve as president of the American Sheep Producers Council and was on the Wisconsin Board of Agriculture. He started with his sisters in 4-H in the 1930s, attended the University of Wisconsin a year and then managed the McKerrow dairy and sheep operations for 32 years. He still found time for activities in his church, on the school board, state livestock organizations, Farm Bureau and the Republican Party and was honored by both the University and Wisconsin 4-H Foundation. Will had two sisters very involved with the Shrops. Helen Pugh was the editor of “The Shrop” promotional magazine, the mid 1950s version of our current “Voice.” Isabel Brown and her husband,Warren, had their own flock of Shropshires focusing on imports from England and their progeny.
