FROM SECRETARY BECKY PETERSON

Hello from the Shropshire office! I hope you and your flock are doing well and holding up under the varying weather conditions we seem to be having. It has been a very wet summer here and we have water and mud where it may not even exist during the spring melt. Some heavy rains in July and early August made a mess for some in New England with lots of road damage and loss of crops. Other areas of the country are needing rain badly. The office has been normally busy over the last few months with 1874 registrations and 851 transfers as of the end of August as well as 139 junior members enrolled, 142 adult members and 17 new adult members. Show results are coming in, as well as futurity point cards. Just as work slows by mid-August it’s time for the Voice again so there is never a dull moment. The Shropshire Futurity continues to be strong with 190 nominations this year (134 ewe lambs and 56 yearlings. Results are posted on the website every two weeks. Two Starter Flock awards were made at the Ohio Showcase Sale in May. Michaela Haudenshield of Ohio received a $1000 stipend and went home with three new Shropshire ewe lambs, Miranda Moneyheffer of Indiana received a $500 stipend and purchased one ewe lamb with the help of her award. The All-American Junior Show had a smooth running in Madison, Wisconsin. The show is a huge undertaking for the staff and the local organizers so be sure to express your appreciation to any of those folks if you have a chance. The Shropshire Junior Association is appreciative of the efforts of Sandy Kovacs who shepherded the Junior Kickoff Online Sale in May. She solicited for some donated items, lambs and semen to sell in this sale and generated $1688. We were also able to glean some funding for the futurity awards and NAILE Showmanship banners. Sandy also was able to pull off a successful “walking taco” lunch for our junior exhibitors at the AAJS. Thank _______ Page 4

you to all the sponsors and purchasers in this event and also to Breeders World for hosting this online sale! The NAILE big dance is right around the corner. The annual meeting will be held there on Nov. 11. It will also be available on Zoom, if you cannot attend. The Junior Show is on the docket for Sunday, Nov. 12 with Jason Heeg judging and the open show will be sorted by Matthew Anderson on Tuesday, Nov. 14. Open show exhibitors are reminded that your matching entry fee will be assessed at $12 per head entered and must be paid to the ASRA by Nov. 1. The Board of Directors continues to be proactive on several fronts including DNA testing for the Dwarf gene, judge selection methods and breed type evaluation. We are in our first year of DNA sampling at specific shows and will continue to collect DNA through 2024 just to help establish prevalence of the Dwarf gene before the penalty phase begins in 2025. Nominations for the 2024 NAILE National Show judge closed on September 30 and they will be ranked during the annual meeting. The procedure was shared in a mass email in August and is also described on the Shropshire website. AND, finally, included with this Voice is the Shropshire Judging Guide that has been in the works for some time. We hope that it will help point out specific traits of the breed and that members will consider them when making breeding decisions. We are proud of the 2023 Hall of Fame inductees. The families of Glenn and Joan High, Max Bryant and Lowell Douce were honored at the Ohio Showcase sale in May. It is wonderful that we can give them recognition and that so many memories are recalled when thinking about them.We appreciate their contributions to the Shropshire breed. Applications for the 2024 class will be available on the Shropshire website. I hope to see you all in Louisville in November. __________________ Shropshire Voice

2023 Shropshire Hall of Fame Max Bryant Frederictown, Ohio Nominated by his family

2023 Shropshire Hall of Fame inducted three new honorees during the National Sale Dinner at the Ohio Showcase Sale in May. Their families were present and introduced following the meal. This year we celebrate Glenn and Joan High of Lexington, Ohio; Max Bryant of Frederictown, Ohio; and Lowell Douce of Washington Courthouse, Ohio. We will feature the Hall of Fame as a history article to be included in the Shropshire Voice. This issue’s story is about Max Bryant. Max graduated from high school early at

the ripe age of 15. He stayed at home and worked closely with his father on the family dairy farm but he always envisioned having a farm of his own with sheep. The same year, 1933, he purchased his first Shropshire Ewe from Edron Vail, also of Fredericktown. The registration paper was framed and hangs on the wall of the farm house where this endeavor began, still to this day. It is one of the oldest flocks in the country and his legacy continues on today. That is the moment Bryant Shrops was no longer a vision but became a reality. As a young shepherd starting out Max spent countless hours in the barn and visiting with other sheep breeders to gain knowledge. Over the years he gained valuable hands on

knowledge of breed character, genetics, lambing tendencies and general health that would excel his flock to great heights. Bryant Shrops genetics can be seen throughout flocks across the country. In 1974 Randy Rife bought his first Shropshire Ram from Max. Max served on various boards at the county, state and national levels. He served on the Knox County Sheep Improvement Board and the Knox County Fair Board. Max wanted to help pave the way for younger breeders and give them an opportunity like he had. Max was always willing to lend a hand to support young breeders. He started and managed the breeding sheep department at the Knox County Fair up until he became very ill in 1992. Over the years he lent many sheep to kids who couldn’t have them so they could attend the fair. He was a member of the Ohio Shropshire Association and at times served on the board. In 1981, the Ohio Sheep Improvement Association awarded him a lifetime membership. He was also a member of the National Shropshire Association and served on the board at times. During the years he served on various boards to help improve the Shropshire sheep breed. Max exhibited sheep at the county, state and national levels. Bryant Shrops has exhibited a Shropshire sheep at the Ohio State Fair for 70 plus consecutive years. Max son, William, helped care for the sheep but it wasn’t until he had a son, William Jr., or Max’s first

grandson, when things began to pick up. At the rip age of five William Jr. “Billy” was heading to the barn and show rings with Grandpa Max. There was never just one, it was always two. Max took Billy with his tender hands and shared his knowledge of raising Shropshire sheep. As Billy grew older Max increased the number of lambing ewes sometimes reaching 100 plus and they attended more and more shows. In 1985, Max wasn’t well enough to travel to the Illinois Spectacular alone so William loaded up the big oxygen tank in the bed of the Dodge and Billy, just 16 years old, drove him out to Illinois. Max’s dedication to the Shropshire breed has not gone unnoticed. In 1995, the Knox County Fair created the Supreme Champion Sheep Class in his honor. A framed picture of Max with his Shropshire sheep standing in the farm yard rotates amongst the winners. The Ohio State Fair honored him with a class,“The Max Bryant Memorial,” which is the exhibitor’s best two head. A framed picture of Max with his Shropshire sheep is awarded yearly. Max Bryant is still talked about amongst sheep breeders at the county, state and national levels. We shouldn’t forget his wife, Leona, her pink icing sugar cookies are still missed to this day at the Ohio State Fair Shropshire hospitality booth. Max’s legacy, Bryant Shrops, still continues today with the fifth generation taking to the show ring.

Scholarship Recipients Each year the ASRA offers two $400 college scholarships to students directly involved with Shropshire sheep and enrolled in an undergraduate program. Students must submit an application, two letters of recommendation and complete a transcript by June 1. This year only two applications were received and they were both extremely deserving of this honor. The winners were David Thompson of Woodville, Wis. and Chloe Stonesifer of Lewisberry, Penn. Read below about David. Chloe’s story will appear in the February 2024 Voice. David is the son of Scott and Kirstin Thompson and graduated this past May from Baldwin-Woodville High School with a GPA of 3.93 and ranked eighth in a class of 120. During his four years at Woodville, he was a member of the National Honor Society and a finalist in the US Presidential Scholars

Program. David participated in a wide variety of school activities. In 4-H, he received the St. Croix County Key Award in 2022 and the Extra Mile Award in 2017 and 2018 and the Beyond Expectations 4-H Camp Council in 2022 and 2023 and played active roles in several service activities. He plans to follow Mechanical Engineering at the University of Wisconsin – Stout. David writes: “Our family began our sheep adventure a decade ago with three lambs purchased for our county fair and since then our operation has blossomed to a flock of over 200 sheep, including five registered breeds. My siblings and I currently own 29 registered Shropshire mature and yearling ewes and two mature registered Shropshire rams. This spring we raised over 180 Iambs, 21 of them registered Shropshires. As a Youth Leader in the 4-H sheep project, I have had the opportunity to teach seminars on sheep topics from conditioning to shearing to halter making locally and at the Indianhead Small Ruminant Clinic. At the 2022 Wisconsin State Fair we were awarded the Reserve Champion Bred and Owned Shropshire Ewe. For several years I have promoted the use of wool by participating in Lead Line classes at numerous shows. I participated in the Wisconsin Make It with Wool contest novelty division with my entry of wool mittens that I had sewn from repurposed sweaters. Our sheep have been exhibited, usually Shropshires and Border Leicesters, in 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021 and 2022 at the North American international Livestock Exposition. Raising breeding stock is a huge commitment. My daily obligations include caring for the 200+ sheep in our flock. Each sheep is penned according to their breed and their individual needs. I help determine rations for each sheep and observe them daily for health issues and any lameness. Besides the daily needs, there are ongoing jobs when tending a flock. We breed in the fall and in the spring; therefore we need to consider bloodlines and conformation before selecting our specific matings. I’ve learned to deworm, give vaccina-

David Thompson tions, process lambs, keep detailed records, fill out registration papers, use CIDR devices for out of season breeding, trim feet, shear fleece, and many other skills needed on a flock of our size throughout the year. Our family enjoys activities with our sheep all year long. My sheep have been a hit at the FFA petting zoo and in my mother’s 5th Grade classroom during her Rural Life unit. Our Shropshire ewes made a beautiful addition to the live nativity at our church on Christmas Eve and my sheep were the highlight of my senior pictures that graced the pages of newspapers and 4-H websites. I’ve done many presentations on the positive attributes of wool and have promoted its use through the Make It with Wool Contest. Participating in these activities and serving as a positive role model through it all, has helped me encourage others to support the sheep industry. For as long as I can remember I have enjoyed breeding and raising animals. I’ve been influenced greatly by watching my parents and grandparents care for their animals. The compassion and work ethic that they have taught me will remain a part of me always. For the past two years I’ve been a mentor for many younger 4-H members who have used by Shropshires as a managerial project. This got Shropshires into their hands and now they are hooked on the breed. The experiences that I’ve had with the Shropshire breed have taught me that I can make a positive impact on the sheep industry and pass my enthusiasm on to the next generation.” Congratulations to David on his success and we wish him the best of luck in his future. _______ Page 15

Shropshire’s reigning royalty This program committee enjoyed reviewing the applications of six youngsters this year. Applications were received and reviewed early in the spring. Presentations were made at the National Sale event at the Ohio Showcase in Greenville, Ohio on May 13. The new Bo-Peep is five-year-old kindergartner Miley Williams of Greenfield, Ind. She writes that she wants to be the Bo-Peep because it will be fun handing out awards at the shows and to represent the Shropshire breed... She in fact did that in July at the AllAmerican Junior Show. The Shropshire Princess is Isabella Camp of East Canton, Ohio. Isabella is 12 years old and in the 6th Grade. She looks forward to helping to represent the breed over the next year. The 2023 Shropshire Queen is Vivian Stephenson of Viroqua, Wis. She is 17 years old and a high school senior. She says that she has the characteristics of someone who would be a great role model to the youth of the Shropshire breed. I would be honored to take on the role of Shropshire Queen so she can share her passion for breeding, raising and showing Shropshires. We look forward to introducing them once again in Louisville in November. Applications for the 2024 Royalty are relatively simple and will be available on the Shropshire website during the winter. The deadline for submissions is March 15.

Starter Flock stipends are put to good use by two young Shropshire breeders Two Shropshire Starter Flock Stipends were awarded this year and the recipients each purchased lambs for their projects at the Ohio Showcase Sale. The first winner was Michaela Haudenshield of Ohio. Michaela is nine years old and a 4th Grade student. She has been involved in showing livestock with her family for several years. She has been leasing lambs to show for a couple of years and showed some Hampshire ewe lambs in 2022. Her parents have been supportive and she purchased three ewe lambs with the help of her $1000 stipend. She has been showing over the past summer and has been submitting futurity point cards. She writes: “With this opportunity I got to show these amazing ewes this summer. I showed them in the Ohio lead program, open shows, Ohio State Fair, Hardin County Fair and I am planning on showing them to Northern American International Live-

stock Expo this fall. It has been an amazing experience getting to work with these amazing animals and I can’t wait to see what the future has in store for these ewe lambs and my breeding program. I can’t thank the National Shropshire Association enough for the opportunity they have given me to own these beautiful girls and make my dreams come true of owning, showing, and starting my own flock and I plan on showing their offspring for years to come. I encourage any youth that has love for the Shropshire breed as I do to apply for this award this has been one of the best opportunities I could ask for.” The second winner is Miranda Moneyheffer of Indiana. Miranda is 11 years old and a 5th Grader. Her family has a few Shropshires and she wanted her own animals so she could make her own breeding decisions. She purchased 1 ewe lamb using _______ Page 19

her $500 stipend and has enjoyed her summer show season. She writes: “I had a great summer! I got Reserve Champion Shropshire ewe at the Freedom Fest. I got Champion and Reserve Champion Shropshire ewe at my county fair and went on to win third overall ewes. I was also chosen Champion Junior Showman with my Shropshire, Lainey. At the Indiana State Fair, I exhibited two Shropshire ewe lambs. One was second and the other seventh. I am looking forward to my starter flock ewe, Ginger, making her grand debut at NAILE. I can’t wait to see you all at NAILE!!” There have been many sponsors over the years totaling $10519 and also the 2023 Email Blast payments totaling another $900. Many thanks to the 2023 sponsors: Dave Huston, Chip Hallet family, Sand Meadow Farm, City Limits Sheep Farm, Indiana Shropshire Association, Charlotte Stephenson, Jim Gruenhagen, Step Ahead Shrops, Jerry Pardus, Erik Mrozinski, Adam Moore,
