National Show and Sale

The National Shropshire Show and Sale is entering its third decade this year. With the understanding at this moment that the event could be cancelled or rescheduled due to the Corona Virus, plans are still forging ahead at press time. Save the dates of May 8 and 9 and make an effort to get to the Darke County Fairgrounds in Greenville, Ohio to attend the Ohio Showcase Sale. This could likely be the first live sheep event of the year and won’t it be great to get out and see positive happenings! The sale this year will be run by new management Select Livestock Services LLC in the hands of Gary Saylor, Pat Myers, Jim Brandt and Danny Westlake, all people with a strong presence at the former Big Ohio Sale. Shropshires will show as the next to last breed, following Oxfords, on Friday in the cattle pavilion and will be judged by Mark Johnson of Sandwich, Ill. They will sell on Saturday in the same breed order. Classes will

be held for yearling rams and ewes, fall ram and ewe lambs, January ram and ewe lambs and February ram and ewe lambs. January and February ewe lambs will be split into early and late classes. All Shropshires will be guaranteed to be NN and either RR or QR. No QQ or NS animals will be allowed to show or sell. Genotypes will be listed on the Sale Order. Webcasting and online bidding is being planned. Mail bids will be allowed but must be approved by sale management and must be paid within five days of the sale. The ever popular Preview will be held on Saturday morning. All ewes will be presented in “sale order” in racks and be available for your inspection. Shropshire Futurity yearling ewes and ewe lambs will be offered. All nominated ewes will be marked with an “F” on the backs and scrapie tags recorded. Individual junior buyers will be able to campaign these ewes throughout the 2020 show season and hopefully earn

back some of their purchase price. The 2019 Overall Futurity Ewe Lamb was purchased at this sale last year! The 2020 Futurity Rules are published elsewhere in this issue and also are available on the Shropshire website. Other Shropshire events will take place at this venue. Again, fingers crossed, the winner of the 2020 Starter Flock will be introduced, as well as new members of the Shropshire Royalty. All in attendance will also be encouraged to participate in the Breed Character Evaluation. And of course there will be two silent auctions to raise funds for the junior associations and to sell the monthly ads on

the Shropshire website. Activities are also planned for the Shropshire junior members on the grounds. Several other breeds will be selling at this sale on the same grounds on Saturday. There should be ample transportation available to several areas of the country if you are unable to attend in person. The sale catalog can be found on the Select Livestock Services website SelectLS.net and will also be posted on the Shropshire site when it becomes available. Contact R.J. Creamer at 740-262-3972 or Secretary Becky Peterson regarding other Shropshire aspects of the event. See you there!

Breed Character With the Breed Character of Shropshire sheep being a popular subject, please plan on stopping at the ASRA event at the National Sale in Greenville, Ohio to continue the discussion of identifying good and poor Shropshire Breed Character. There will be two classes of four animals to be placed, based solely on the breed character of the sheep. The classes will be set up at the start of the weekend and will be available to judge at your convenience. Each class will have questions to answer as well as place. The official will be the average of the responses from the Board of Directors. There will be at

least one sale credit awarded to a high scoring junior. Everyone is encouraged to take part and to help get all of the juniors to participate.

From Junior Association President Taylor Young Hi Everyone!! I hope this finds everyone well and almost done with lambing season. Hard to believe it’s almost April again! I am writing just to pass around some information and upcoming events for the Ohio Showcase Sale and also the AAJS this year. Recently, I wrote an article asking for help in fundraising for our starter flock program that awards $1250 to an applicant to assist in the start of building their Shropshire flock. I appreciate all the donations we got from that and thank all of you for your support of this program. We hope to continue to get the donations built up a little bit more, so if you would like to pledge anything towards this program please contact Becky to do so. Our junior board is also going to be calling breeders in their region to ask for donations. This year at the Ohio Showcase Sale in Greenville, the Junior Association will be putting on a silent auction. We encourage anyone who would like to bring items to donate for the silent auction to do so and we will get it all set up, if you have any questions about the silent auction or would like to donate, you can contact myself, Becky or Rylie. Also at the Ohio Sale, we will again be holding the breed character contest for the juniors to compete in and we encourage everyone to stop by and check it out! This contest is designed to allow you to take a look at ideal and non-ideal examples of breed type in Shropshires and what the breed is striving for! At

the Ohio Sale, we also plan on holding a junior activity for all of the juniors within the breed, and would like to invite everyone to come out and play some games, meet some new friends and get to know each other better! I think that this will be a good way to come together and enjoy an afternoon with fellow breeders; the location and time are to be announced closer to the sale. Additionally, as we look forward to the AAJS, in Michigan, this coming summer we are planning another 50/50 raffle, with all proceeds going to the Junior Association. We plan on having the annual cookout and meeting for the juniors and their families, and we hope you will come join us for that! There may even be some fun prizes offered, just for attending! We look forward to another fun year and show season with everyone. If you have any questions feel free to reach out to Rylie or myself. Again, thank you to everyone for your continuous support of our juniors and the Shropshire breed! Taylor Young, American Shropshire Junior Association President

Meet Director Debbie Petzel Windswept Crest Farm is located in northwestern Wisconsin near Centuria, where Debbie Petzel shepherds her current flock of 40 purebred Shropshire ewes and lambs and about 50 Hampshire wether style ewes. Debbie grew up on a dairy and beef farm in Cushing,Wis. and after college married a dairy farmer. The dairy herd was sold about 15 years ago and with husband, Mark, the couple transitioned to beef cattle, now grown to a 150cow herd. It wasn’t until about 20 years ago that they began their sheep operation, which started when daughter Emily, now 26, wanted to show sheep. Like many families that start youth livestock projects, a few lambs eventually grew to a significant and competitive purebred breeding flock. Debbie currently lambs out approximately 70 ewes in mid-January to mid-March and another 20 ewes in September to produce replacement ewes for the flock, breeding stock, market lambs for youth projects, as well as commercial lambs that are finished on the farm and sold through a variety of meat markets. In addition, she and Mark also raise corn and hay and have put acreage into a rotational grazing system. The Petzel family includes daughter Lindsay, who teaches sixth grade at Grantsburg, and her son eight-year-old son, Morgan; and daughters, Katie and Emily, who both graduated from UW-Madison. Katie is a district techni-

cian for the Pine County, MN Soil and Water Department. Emily is working on her PhD in Ruminant Nutrition at University of MissouriMizzou, Columbia, Mo. 2019 marks Petzel’s fifth year as a board member for Wisconsin Sheep Breeders Cooperative, where she has served on both the Communications and the Scholarship Committees. Her responsibilities at the Wisconsin Sheep & Wool Festival include coordinating the photo contest, setting up the decorations and backdrop in the open and junior sheep shows, assisting at skillathon and generally helping wherever needed. Her family was a member of the Indianhead Sheep Breeders Association (ISBA) for about 10 years, where she

served a term on the ISBA Board of Directors, helping to develop and maintain a new website, creating an ISBA Facebook page and serving as the Chairperson of the ISBA Youth Clinic. She has been a member of the Polk County 4-H Sheep Committee, Sheep Project Leader for the Northern Lights 4-H Club, a member of the Interstate Livestock Show Committee, helped form the Northern Show Circuit organization and has conducted sheep skillathons for youth at various events. Having retired from nearly 30 years of teaching at Unity Elementary School, Debbie is currently a substi-

tute teacher for several school districts. As an avid photographer, she often travels to county fairs in Minnesota and Wisconsin to judge photography and arts and crafts. She also makes the six hour trek to Milwaukee work at the Wisconsin State Fair in the sheep department during both open sheep show weekends, which she says is a great way to help inform urban fairgoers about the livestock industry and sheep. She has also applied for an American Lamb Board grant put together the Baa Booth as an educational outreach at the state fair.

Not all Methods of Castration by Ligation are Equal Properly tensioned band is critical St. Francis, Kansas – Proper tension is essential in ligating a body part. Studies of hightension banding have demonstrated that the complete negation of blood flow triggers a natural analgesic effect that reduces pain, while minimizing swelling and related complications. This effect is called compression analgesic. Compression analgesic was the term used by researchers in New Zealand when developing a humane and drug-free method of velvet antler removal.Without a band placed below the antler pedicle, the level of pain when removing the antler was excruciating (full body movement); with a properly tensioned Callicrate VELVET ANTLER Band, the level of pain was undetectable (no eye movement). The Callicrate WEE Bander, as with the Callicrate SMART Bander and the Callicrate PRO Bander, also provides compression analgesic. It is the only castration tool for newborns that achieves a level of tension sufficient to shut off the blood supply, while providing immedi-

ate pain relief. Proper tension is achieved with every application. Managing stress is especially important with calves, lambs, and kids in developing healthy immune systems essential to a healthy drugfree life. Another advantage of the WEE Bander – you do not have to worry about incomplete castration when a testicle slips back up above the band. Keeping both testicles below the band with the elastrator pliers and ‘cheerio’ rings is a challenge. The elastrator ring is inexpensive but fails to provide sufficient tension for either proper ligation or pain relief. Other castration products on the market are either bigger versions of the elastrator ring or depend on operator hand strength for tightening, failing to provide the proper tension. Callicrate Banders, recommended by veterinarians and animal handling specialists worldwide since 1995, are the most humane and effective castration tools on the market. Due to emphasis on high-tension ligation, the banders excel at achieving a tight band every time. Easy-to-read tension indicators ensure the correct tightness, essential to minimizing discomfort and reducing complications. _______ Page 27

As Breed Type Is Becoming a (Re-)Focus (Again) Make sure you use purebred and repeatable Shropshire genetics to fix type issues That’s what Bernard Groverman and Farrell Shultz did in the early 1950s Their breeding goals were to correct from a small-and-overly-wooly Shropshire-trend-dujour

Fred Groverman with first-cross lambs out of wooly-type ewes and imported “California New Type 2”, who looks on at right.

Farrell Shultz with imported ram, “Tern Cambridge”

Focus on type is great. That focus needs to be a long-term approach and implemented within the breed and over many generations. Form, function, and breed characteristics should be repeatable over generations. People and Pedigrees You Can Trust. Traditional Genetics with a Modern Purpose.
