“Great Genetics Make The Difference”

Congratulations Emily Stevens, with your October 5th ram lamb, ES 2003. Emily bought his sire, Rife’s “Thoroughbred” 18-194 by “Kaboose” from our July ’19 production sale. Emily had selected his dam, Rife 18-002 by “Bone Chiller” from the 2018 National Sale at Eaton. This powerful stud prospect has also won Champion Shropshire and Supreme overall at the “ Border Bash” show in Eaton, Ohio. He was also Champion Shropshire and Reserve overall at the “Freedom Fest” show in Missouri. Three impressive wins at three prestigious shows. The “Bone Chiller” on “Kaboose” genetics have really nicked! From president Jim Percival

Happy fall. Hopefully everyone who fall lambs is well into their lambing season and everyone has ewes bred for spring lambs. I know that this has been a crazy year for everyone. If the virus was not enough to make everyone crazy the windstorm that hit the Midwest was. Jim Percival It was great to see that some of our youth were able to have a couple shows

this summer. Congratulations to everyone who was able to show. Hopefully, we will have a show in Louisville. I know we are all excited to be able to get together.   Please remember to help someone who is new in Shropshires. We can all have positive influence on our new members and it is a real benefit to everyone. Jim Percival

From secretary becky peterson Hello Shropshire Fans! I hope everyone is doing well and staying safe and healthy. I’ll do my best here not to dwell on our current COVID-19 situation in this column. We are all quite sick of it and look forward to the time when we can get back to normal and ask “did you remember your mask” only when going out for Halloween. In spite of it all, the Shropshire office has stayed pretty busy with registration work over the summer with 1575 registrations, 780 transfers, 105 renewing adult members, 119 junior members and 17 new memberships. All numbers are down a little as we expected might happen but I am grateful for each and every one of them this year. When it began to look like there would be a few shows for the kids to go to, things got busy again. Each announcement of yet another cancellation was disheartening at best but we had no choice but to accept it and look for alternatives. Many youth livestock associations were able to pull together and arrange for events to happen with a lot of changes, of course. I was delighted when our own North East Youth Sheep Show was able to delay a couple of weeks and put on a very successful event. It is hard enough to run a show of any size under usual circumstance but was quite a task to put this one together. We got through it with the new protocols and had a really good show and Shropshires were well represented. If you wanted to try your hand at having an online sale, this was the year for it. There were five online sales already in the planning stages when things went awry in early March. One breeder added two private sales to the line-up, another had one sale, another added a third to his already scheduled two, one other group added two more sales and, of course, the National Sale slated for Greenville, Ohio also became an online event, unfortunately though, almost at the end of the schedule. The Indiana Premier Sale in Greenfield, Ind. was postponed a second time and finally went _______ Page 4

off as a live sale in June. The Midwest Stud Ram Sale cancelled completely as did the Great Lakes Sale. These 12 online sales had mixed results, some more successful than others for various reasons. In all, 195 Shrops and a few lots of semen were offered in online sales. I want to express my appreciation to everyone who has supported our programs this year. We still have to focus on our juniors and have received several sponsorships of the Starter Flock and Junior Association. The Breeders Index has had lots of continued listings and of course we are thankful for all of the advertising support we receive for this book. The futurity had still a strong showing of 39 yearling ewes and 106 ewe lamb nominations from 15 sales, online or otherwise. There have been some shows and there is a collection of point cards in the record. We are very thankful for the confidence of the consignors in this program. Junior Association President Taylor Young of Tennessee has done an outstanding job staying connected with our junior members after the resignation of Junior Coordinator Rylie Miller. She has updated the junior’s Facebook page and organized some fundraisers at some regional shows. These proceeds go to the activities of the junior group. Plans for the North American are still ongoing though there will be some definite changes. Most of these are not available at this writing so stop by the Shropshire website www.shropshires.org for continued updates regarding the November Shropshire events in Kentucky. Be aware that this all may change plans for the meetings that usually take place in Louisville. All in all, I have been fortunate to have a job that automatically allowed me to work from home. We are fairly isolated and have mostly kept to ourselves on our hill and have stayed safe and healthy, so far. But I will be anxious to see our members at the next opportunity. Stay healthy, everyone! __________________ Shropshire Voice

NAILE 2020

While it has been very difficult to plan events in the past few months, the North American International Livestock Exposition has announced that the show will go on this fall even though there will be some major changes. This will be a livestock-show-only event and will not be open to the public. The sheep barn will be setup with wider aisles and no cooking or sleeping in the barn will be allowed. It is likely that there will be no meeting rooms available. There will be no 4-H events (quiz bowl or Skillathon) though some collegiate judging events will continue. The rodeo is cancelled. The country store will not be open, though food and supply vendors will be set up in strategic areas. Face masks/coverings will be required at all times. Special wristbands will be distributed based on the number of entries made and will be required to be worn by each person entering the facility. The premium book is available at this time on the NAILE website www.livestockexpo.org So, that being said, the following is the tentative NAILE Shropshire plan: •Junior Breeding Sheep Showmanship Friday, Nov. 13, 9 AM •NAILE Lead Classes Friday, Nov. 13, 5 PM •National Junior Shropshire Show Sunday, Nov. 15, 8 AM •National Open Shropshire Show Monday, Nov. 16, following Tunis

The meetings for the Board of Directors, the Junior Association and the Annual Meeting of the members are in limbo at this point. Their arrangements will be posted on the Shropshire Website and Facebook page and sent by an email blast when firm. The Stars of Louisville Shropshire Sale will not be held this year per the decision of the ASRA Directors in November 2019. However, as of this writing, the National Tunis Sheep Registry has plans in the works for an All-Breed Bred Ewe Sale to be held on Saturday, Nov. 14 at 2 PM. Shropshire breeders have been invited to participate. Susan Anderson of Kentucky is acting as the Sale Organizer. She can be reached at (606) 346-3916. Entries close on October 5. Entry information is posted on the Shropshire website www.shropshires.org. When available the sale catalog will be posted there as well.

Starter Flock

The seventh year of the Shropshire Starter Flock was marked in 2020. The committee reviewed 16 applications in late March. Applicants ranged in age from 9 to 18 and lived in nine states (Florida,Tennessee, Indiana,Wisconsin, Ohio, Massachusetts, Kentucky, Maine and Illinois.) The 2020 recipient was 9-year-old James Bend of Waterman, Ill. His application showed a real interest in beginning this project after a year with two market lambs. He has autism and is well encouraged by his parents, Jeffrey and Meredith Bend. He succeeded well last year and with his $1250 stipend he purchased two yearling ewes, Cookie and Candy, from Rueber Shropshires and Erik Mrozinski in their online sales in April. The yearlings have been bred for this fall so hopefully he will be in the lambing barn soon. He also purchased three other ewe lambs, Skittles, Sugar and Spice, from City Limits and from Westin Poynter. So with these and two crossbred Cheviots, they have a flock of seven and can’t wait to add more. James has been practicing shearing through the summer and was able to attend three shows in spite of the nasty Covid-19 virus. His uncle, Jared Poynter, has been helping James with his project along the way. James does some of his own research online and his mom says he retains an amazing amount of knowledge. He also appreciated the help of Brad and Carol Slutz and also Rick Adams and his gradaughters. James will be going to in-person school

James Bend with his February Ewe Lamb purchased at the Indiana Premier Sale. this fall and is eager to share his experiences with new friends. The present Starter Flock Program began in 2014 through the efforts of the National Junior Shropshire Association and is also funded through donations by Shropshire breeders. Sponsors this year include Chip Hallet, Sand Meadow Farm, Orchard Valley Farm, SS Shrops, Jared Poynter, Diana Majors, Twisted Sisters Livestock,Triple J Farm, Jan Motter, Isler Shropshires, Schoolhouse Shropshires, Caleb Fritz, Sugar Ridge Ranch, ROKAJO, Kemp Shropshires, Adams Shropshires, Jaedyn and Drake Slutz, City Limits Sheep Farm and the Calvin Family. As with a lot of junior programs, sponsorship is continually needed to make it successful. Contact Junior Association President Taylor Young or the Shropshire office to find out how you can help. To be considered for the award, youngsters must submit an application, an essay, one or more letters of recommendation and a budget outlining the management of three or more ewes for a year. Applications should be available early in 2021 from the Shropshire office or on the registry website. _______ Page 15

ty and state fairs throughout the year, as well as the AAJS and NAILE. My flock consists of about 25 ewes. Aside from my passion for the sheep industry and livestock showing I also run a photography business. I am thrilled to be helping with our junior activities this year, and while I’m sad that we haven’t been able to see each other and have our activities at shows this summer like we normally would, I’m optimistic that we will get to be back at it soon. In the meantime we are planning for some fun activities at NAILE this fall so be sure to come to our junior meeting! I love the Shropshire breed for not only the good sheep and stock within the breed but the memories that come with it, the breeders and the people that become more like family along the way! Q.What is one thing you would recommend to the younger/upcoming members? I would say, don’t be afraid to ask questions, reach out to fellow breeders or members, we are all in this together to better our breed, and don’t forget to enjoy all the times and memories that will come while being a junior member! Thank you for taking time to learn more about me, I look forward to seeing everyone sometime soon!

Jaedyn Slutz,Vice President

Jaedyn Slutz, a senior in high school, of Maple Park, Ill. is the National Shrop Vice President. She has had Shropshires since the day she was born. Jaedyn stays busy working with her sheep, taking dance lessons, being active in FFA and 4-H and hanging out with friends. Jaedyn is excited for her future and the future of the Shropshire breed.

have a variety of other livestock. Our flock contains 65 brood ewes that we breed each year to create high-quality show stock that will later move on to become great producers. We show nationally each year at some of the bigger shows such as the NAILE and AAJS, state fairs, as well as our local county fair. We strive to create animals that are great in the show ring and out, with muscling, bone, and correct breed character. Sheep have always been a huge part of my life. I have been showing and raising Shropshire sheep alongside my family for over 10 years now, and I plan to continue doing so for many years to come. In 2018, I served the AJSA as the Shropshire Princess. Last year I also served as our organization’s secretary. Aside from sheep, I enjoy trail riding our six Tennessee Walking horses, playing guitar, photography, as well as dancing competitively throughout the Midwest region. I am also involved in Girl Scouts, am the President of my local 4-H group, and am involved in my school’s environmental, chess, and photography clubs. Q.What is one thing you would recommend to the younger/upcoming members? What I would recommend to the Shropshire youth is to never stop learning. Even in difficult times like these, there are always new things to learn about sheep, in and out of the ring. From something as simple as asking a question to a breeder at a show, to watching educational videos online at home, there are always chances to grow intellectually in the sheep world. Thank you so much for taking the time to learn more about me!

Taylor Kemp,Treasurer

Hello from Macon, Missouri! My name is Taylor Kemp and I am the current treasurer of the National Junior Shropshire Association! Shropshires are my family and I’s only breed of sheep, however, we also enjoy raising Registered Hereford pigs and having a few head of horses and cattle! My livestock are definitely enough to keep me busy along with college at Moberly Area Community College and work-

ing at a local veterinary clinic. Outside of work and school I am a member of the FFA and enjoy work through events and competitions this organization holds such as livestock judging! As this year is not going as planned, I hope that we all eventually get to come together and have fun with some activities we have been arranging! I feel it is very important for our organization members to be together for as we may compete against each other we are a family that enjoys watching each other succeed, working together, and most importantly helping one another! With that being said I hope our young and upcoming members will jump in with us and be active! Q.What is one thing you would recommend to the younger/upcoming members? Always having mentors and supporters is always great to encourage your involvement and to cheer you on. Senior members, be that encourager now through your adulthood, the youth need you!

Addisen Nicholson Youth Director

Hi, I’m Addisen Nicholson and I live in South Windsor Conn. I am the youth director of the Northeast/New York Region. This is my sixth year raising and showing Shropshires. When not working with my sheep, I also enjoy playing soccer, lacrosse, basketball and hanging out at the beach. Currently, we raise Shrops and Southdowns at our farm, along with market hogs, a Shorthorn heifer which I have recently bred for a spring calf, and a new venture into raising Havana rabbits with my first litter expected shortly. I am active in both 4-H and my school. This year has been tough without either so the barn has been a major go-do-something for me in the pandemic. I have still been working with all my lambs and very involved in the breeding schedule for this coming year’s lamb crop. I miss hanging out with all my friends at all the shows but am looking forward to seeing you all soon. _______ Page 31

The first Shropshires in Hawaii About this issue’s cover By Charlotte Stephenson Hawaii welcomes it’s first ever Shropshires! Two ewe lambs made the 4,500 mile journey to Maui, Hawaii this year from Sugar Ridge Ranch in Viroqua,Wis.They are enjoying life at the Art Farm LLC which is a non-profit artists in residency 52-acre farm in Kuli, Hawaii. It took roughly a year to work out the details. When the Art Farm contacted me about our Shrops and explained they wanted to get them to Hawaii, I was a bit skeptical at first. It’s not every day you have sheep customers from Hawaii! After many months of emails and photos, the two special ewes were selected. Even though Hawaii is part of the U.S. it is treated like an international country because

The ewes pose for a photo by their new owners in their new home in Maui. _______ Page 34

it is essentially isolated in terms of importation regulations. Several phone calls, emails, flock tests and work with the Hawaii Department of Agriculture, California, Wisconsin State and our local veterinarians made it all possible.Things were pretty much lined up for the two ewes to fly out of Chicago directly to Maui when COVID-19 hit. Flights were cancelled everywhere and there were added restrictions on livestock. Move to plan B! The alternative plan was to drive them to Denver, Col. where there were still direct flights. A week later, those flights were cancelled. It was looking more and more like the only direct flights were out of LAX in Los Angeles. At first we contacted several professional livestock haulers to arrange transportation, but again COVID put the brakes on that. Everyone’s schedules and routes were up in the air. Add to the fact that these lambs have a weight restriction for flying and are growing like crazy. The trip had already been delayed by a month and this was one time that our great rate of gain was working against us! We looked at our schedule, made some

We made the 2,000 mile trip out in about 48 hours. We planned our route to drive through the hottest parts of the journey at night to keep the ewes comfortable. They arrived safely in Santa Monica and from there the new owners transported them the next day to the Los Angles airport where they then made the additional 2,500 miles to Maui. We took our time heading back home to

Wisconsin. Our initial plan was to visit the Hollywood Walk of Fame and see some of the sights in Los Angeles. Unfortunately, the day we delivered the lambs, Los Angeles was having riots, so that idea was out. We also planned to camp at the National Parks in California, but most were closed, again due to COVID. At this point we were on Plan Z and looked again at the map, did a bit of quick research and planned a new route. JoshuaTree National Park in California was open. After the lambs were delivered we high-tailed across the Mojave Desert just in time to pitch our tent and spent the night camping in the desert under the beautiful stars. From there we zig-zagged our way through Utah and camped, hiked and explored Zion, Bryce, Canyonlands, Capitol Reef and Arches National Parks. We then shot over to Colorado to spend a day at Mesa Verde National Park. During the two week adventure we put on over 5,000 miles. It was truly the trip of a lifetime!

What a difference a year makes! By Lee Ann Tobey Eizinger In 2019 our granddaughter, Collette Ott, daughter of Eric and Amy Eizinger Ott, showed her first mini Shropshire ewe lamb, Cotton Ball, at the Fulton County 4-H Fair in Rochester, Ind. Last year there were 12 mini sheep showmen. Collette is a fifth generation to show from our flock of Shrops. She had lots of fun, worked hard and learned a lot about sheep. My Grandfather, Charles C. Wagoner, was a tenant farmer before he could purchase

his own farm, which he did in 1920, and then added Shropshire sheep to his long list of livestock. My parents, Robert “Bob” and Shirley Tobey, started their flock back in the late 1950s from the Wagoner flock and it is still going strong today. Right now I have 18 brood ewes, five replacement ewe lambs and two rams. 2020 has been a different kind of year with COVID and with Tim having a serious health issue last winter, etc., but we, as a family, have made the best out of it. As the fair season approached this summer and wanting to take

Front to back, Amy, Everett, Lee Ann and Collette during their own fair on the farm.

precautions, we chose not to let Collette participate in the “show & go” at our county fair in July. I am on the Counties Sheep Committee and usually help in the show ring, but chose not to participate because of the chance of being exposed to the virus, as well. This is the first year ever that I didn’t attend the Fulton County fair. And I didn’t attend the Indiana State fair for the first time in 54 years. The state fair was my home-away-from home for eight years in the month of August when I served on the Board of Directors from 2010-2017. Collette, 8, came to our house to work her ewe, Royale Princess, and walked her on a regular basis just as she did last year. Collette and her brother, Everett, 5, love to come to the farm and help with the sheep and chores. It’s great with the kids helping me walking and training my replacement ewe lambs and of course their experience of showing them as well. It is so much easier to work with the flock when they are tame and are your “best friend.” Instead of going to the county fair this year, we had our own fair at Grandma’s house. The kids brought their show clothes and we had a show in the barn lot. I put out a couple bales of straw and we had a good time, walking sheep, setting them up and just making new memories! We worked the sheep, walked them, showed the lambs and sat on the straw bales and talked a while, just like when we are training and halter breaking the lambs. Grandpa Tim took lots of pictures, just like if we were at the fair. After the sheep show, we changed our

clothes and we had games in the backyard, consisting of miniature golf, ladder ball, pitchball, horse shoes and even had a duck pond of plastic ducks—like at the state fair and had lots of rides on our pony tire swing. There were goodie bags for the kids and a new lamb yard ornament for Amy. Lots of “fair food” was served over a couple days from the visit, like hotdogs, chicken strips, lamb burgers, french fries, walking tacos, lemonade shake ups, ice cream cones and I even found some cotton candy at the store in plastic containers. Also when the grandkids come to visit, they travel to the homeplace about 10 miles away to check out the sheep, farm and garden. They always have snacks while at the homeplace, sitting out on the big rocks in one of the pastures with the ewes. When we talk on the phone, Collette is always asking, “how are the sheep doing and how are Cotton Ball and Princess Royale?” With the kids not being able to go anywhere with the COVID, they did come out to our farm several times this summer. On their

trip before the 4th of July we made tie-dyed shirts. That was an experience! When they come, I always try to do a craft with them.We always have lots of chalk, as well, to mark up the driveway! We really had a lot of fun times this summer, learning experiences and we were able to be together as a family.

It’s not about the day or the moment. It’s about the time & dedication; all those behind the scenes hours that really make it special. This one comes from a long line of stud ewes that are the heart of our program.

In Memorial jasper newton dirlam Jasper Newton Dirlam, 90, passed away on Sept. 17, 2020, at his home in Mooresville, Ind. surrounded by family. Jasper was born on Oct. 20, 1929 to Horace and Josephine Dirlam in Bismarck, N.D. They lived on a 320 acre farm near Mennoken until a severe drought caused crop devastation. After two years without any harvest, the family packed up and moved to Indiana, settling on a farm in Bowling Green. Jasper attended Patrickburg High School, where he was a talented basketball player and class officer, graduating in 1947. Most importantly, this is where Jasper met Ruth Hauser. They were wed on June 3, 1950 and were happily married for 61 years until Ruth’s passing on Oct. 29, 2011. After high school, Jasper attended Butler University and then Indiana State University, where he transferred to be closer to Ruth who was enrolled at Indiana State Teacher’s College. A Korean War veteran, Jasper served for two years in the U.S. Army as a paratrooper in the 508th Airborne Company. Jasper proudly worked for GM Allison Transmission for 40 years. During his tenure, he held numerous responsible positions in Material Control until he retired in 1989 as a supervisor with the department. Jasper loved raising Shropshire sheep and did so for over 60 years. In addition to showing at local, state, and national shows, he served as a Director for the American Shropshire Registry, a Director for the Board of Animal Health of the State of Indiana, and a Superintendent of the Morgan County Fair Sheep Barn. He was the recipient of numerous awards, including the Oren A. Wright Award for outstanding service to the Indiana Sheep industry, and more recently, the Lifetime Achievement Award in 2015 at the Indiana State Fair awarding him a lifetime pass to the fair. In 2016, Jasper was selected for the Honor Flight honoring his military service. He was a member of the Morgan County Dem-

ocratic Committee and the American Legion of Coal City. Jasper also had a great love for border collies and always had one riding alongside him in his truck. Jasper was passionate about IU basketball and Jasper Dirlam had season tickets for decades. Jasper was an incredibly caring and generous man; he donated to many causes and charities; he always bought raffle tickets for local fundraisers; and he gave to his church, St. Stephen’s Lutheran Church. He also loved to travel and spent much of his time exploring with Ruth and their cherished companions, Jasper’s brother, Jim and sister-in-law, Norma. Jasper loved his family. He and Ruth had two beloved sons, John and Mark, and two grandchildren that they adored, Lindsay and Matt. He never missed a track meet, a basketball game, or any other event involving his family. Jasper never met a stranger and was a gifted conversationalist. At his core, he loved supporting his family, his friends, his neighbors, and those he met through his passion for raising sheep. He truly left an impression on everyone he met and will be remembered for his kind heart, his giving spirit, and his easygoing nature. Jasper is survived by his two sons, John (Carol) of Mooresville and Mark (Dan) of Indianapolis; two grandchildren, Lindsay Dirlam of Indianapolis and Matt Dirlam of North Salem; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brother, Dr. James H. Dirlam and his sister-in-law, Norma Dirlam. Burial was in the Worthington Cemetery, Worthington.
