Board of Directors Meeting November15, 2015, Louisville, KY Meeting was called to order at 11:04 a.m. by President Jim Percival. Present were Alan Bruhin, Rick Adams, Re Call, R.J. Creamer, Bob Dinsmore, Darrell Dockter, Mike Elsbury, Jim Gruenhagen, Mary Anne Keck, Tim Roberts, Danny Rogers, Brad Slutz and Mandy Swartz. Absent was Cody Hiemke. Becky Peterson was present as secretary. Millie Moore, Brett Oelke and Mark McCabe sat in as guests. Secretary’s Report – Becky had previously submitted the minutes of the last board meeting of May 8, 2015 for the board members to review. Alan Bruhin moved to accept them as printed. Motion was seconded by Jim Gruenhagen. There was no discussion. Minutes were approved. Treasurer’s Report – Becky had also sent the report as of 10/31/15 earlier for review. Becky quickly ran through it for clarification.

Total assets were $63,899.71, up $2,311.75 from same period last year. She noted that the Receivables of $4,470.41 were mostly the advertising invoices from the last issue of the Voice. Profit for the first 10 months of 2015 was $3,074.17. She noted that there is an additional income of $128.35 not included in the report for Voice advertising and account interest. She noted that the purchase of the laptop and registry software is included as capital expenditures but there is still $2000 left to pay on the software in Accounts Payable. The Revolving Fund Accounts were reviewed showing a running total of $4,522.15 since 2008. There had been no activity in the following accounts: 125th Anniversary, Junior Ambassador Fund, pre-2013 Futurity. The Stars of Louisville Sale account funded the laptop and software purchase in the summer. The Junior Association account funded the AAJR cookout. The Starter Flock fund begun in 2015 has $375 toward the next award. Discussion on these accounts followed. Alan moved to apply the Ambassador Fund to the

Junior Association since the junior president is essentially the Ambassador. Mary Anne Keck seconded and the fund will be redirected as of today. Alan also noted that support for the Shropshire Starter Flock fund would be solicited after the beginning of the year. There was no further discussion of the financial report. RJ Creamer moved with a second from Rick Adams to accept the report. Jim Percival asked the guests from the Heartland Group to make their presentation. Bret Oelke and Millie Moore spoke about the Midwest Stud Ram Sale (MWSRS) and had a very successful first year as managers. In preparation for the 2016 event, they invited the ASRA to hold a National Sale in Sedalia. They said there would be a meeting room available, time available for national youth events and an area for breed promotional displays. Shrops will show and sell in the swine barn as before. The MWSRS will no longer remit 1% of the Shropshire gross back unless the National Sale was held there. In the past, this has been directed to the ASRA Scholarship Fund. They will offer ASRA ad space in the sale catalog for a full page ad for MWSRS in our Voice. Input is

welcomed for judge selection. Board of Director (BOD) member Mary Anne Keck is the Shropshire breed rep on the sale committee and will work to coordinate judges between breeds. Bret asked that the ASRA settle on the Shropshire classification method for the MWSRS and recommends not splitting the “wether type” from the “frame type” and have just one division. Brett and Millie also stated that the Heartland Livestock group is managing the sheep show here in Louisville this year and next. So far, everything is going smoothly and it appears to be exhibitor-friendly. Committee reports Budget & Finance – Re reported that the Finance Committee sees no reason to change the budget for the upcoming year. Voice & Promotion – Rinda was unable to attend. Voice is going well and advertising is almost covering the cost of production and mailing. Unfortunately the “Best Breed Character Ewe” ad from the National Sale was omitted from the October Voice and thus was included in the mailing of the NAILE Sale catalog. Colby showed her this summer where she was also Champion Ewe at the All American Jr. Show. We are excited about her record for Colby Clark. We will be consigning to the Eaton, Ohio and Springfield, Illinois sales this year.

half of the cost of the Breed Character Award ads in 2016. There was discussion regarding the classified ads on the website. There is not much participation. Suggested that Rinda or Becky send an email blast to membership reminding of this opportunity and also every time something is added or updated on the Shropshire website. Stars of Louisville Sale – Becky reported that the sale went well the day before and handed out sale/financial reports. The 13 head sold averaged $851.92. Four head sold for $1,000 or more. At least eight sold to juniors. The catalog was not mailed with the Voice so incurred an extra postage cost to mail separately. The net profit on the sale was approximately $370. It was decided to plan for the sale again in 2016. Production – Cody was not present. Rick Adams would like to encourage breeders to join the NSIP program as there is a good market for Shropshire rams with NSIP data. Junior Association – Alan reported that there were approximately 25 kids that attend-

ed the junior association meeting the day before. He put together a six-station Skillathon for the kids. It was well received. The juniors broke up into their regions and elected their directors and officers. The new president is Rylie Miller of Indiana. Futurity – Becky presented the 2015 Futurity Statistics. Forty-three yearling ewes were nominated for a total of $860. Cards were turned in on 15 ewes. 151 ewe lambs were nominated for a total fund of $3220.They were purchased by approximately 65 youth buyers. Points were tracked on 27 lambs. There was some confusion at the Midwest Sale in getting the Futurity Ewe Lambs recorded. Mary Anne Keck said she would take care of it at that sale in the future. The 2015 contest wrapped up on Saturday. The Yearling Ewe Futurity was won by Kennedy Algire with a Jim Isler ewe she purchased at the Stars of Louisville Sale last year. There was a tie in points for the Ewe Lamb Futurity. It was broken on the NAILE placing. The winner was Chloe Stonesifer with a R&A ewe lamb purchased at the Classic Sale.

Mike Elsbury brought up concerns from his region that lambs were not being awarded fairly in shows where there are huge classes. He provided point scales from some of the other breeds’ programs. Also discussed was using different values for regional shows and the method used to break ties. Becky mentioned discrepancies in point submissions. Bob Dinsmore and Danny Rogers moved to direct the Futurity Committee to work on those issues and report to the BOD at the next teleconference. Motion passed. The Futurity Committee is Mark McCabe, Chairman, R.J. Creamer, Tim Barnes, Rick Adams and Danny Rogers. Fund Raising – ASRA Past-President Kent Flora has offered a 1909 Shropshire Flock Book to use as a Fundraiser. Jim suggested directing its proceeds at a silent auction toward the junior association. Discussion took place on the various programs that funds are needed for. Re volunteered to request funds for the AAJS, Mary Ann said she would raise funds for the two college scholarships and Alan would

coordinate the Flock Starter fund. Old Business Shropshire Store – Jim reported that the new vendor has the website set and that he just has to proof it and get the vendor connected to Rinda to link to the Shropshire site. The artwork will be updated. Flock Starter – Alan reports that the Junior Association is happy with the results of the Starter Flock program and would like to continue with the fundraising method. He will be preparing a donation request letter in January to help raise the funds. The Ohio Shropshire Association also makes money available. Jim Percival estimates that $6,000 was spent at the Classic Sale by the young people who have been awarded this opportunity. There was discussion about restricting the ASRA award to youngsters who do not already own Shropshires. Currently the application is just an essay. Jim suggested that the committee review the application and also look at the Ohio version of the award and report back to the BOD. The committee established last

year to review the applications is Rick Adams, RJ Creamer, Jim Gruenhagen, Brad Slutz and Mandy Swartz. Online Sale Futurity Rule – Discussion was tabled at the May meeting regarding the number of ewe lambs needed for an online sale for them to be futurity nominated. Currently, the rule states there must be five. Discussion followed. Rick Adams moved to remove the minimum. RJ Creamer seconded. A hand vote was taken. Motion failed with five for and eight against. More discussion followed. The minimum number of ewe lambs in an online sale for futurity nominations remains at five. New registry software – Becky reported that the new registry system is working well. The programmer has been very willing to make small changes. There had been a request from a breeder to research relatives and ownership of sheep consigned to a sale. The old system was capable for doing this also. Becky spent several hours on this project. BOD suggested Becky establish an hourly fee for such research. Discussion followed also regard-

Currently mass emails sent from Rinda or Becky must be sent as “blind copy” so that addresses were not available. Decided not to make the list available. recommends keeping the Shropshire show and sale as one show type. Do not split into wether and frame types. NSA – there has been no contact from the group and no information is available. Slick Shearing issues – There have been instances this year where Shrops have been exhibited either fitted or left with butt wool. Becky reported that she had sent reminders to more than one major show in 2015 that Shropshires were to be shown shorn. Everyone was in favor of making shearing a requirement but unsure of enforcing at remote shows. No change was made to the recommendation but we would continue to inform “offending” shows of the recommendation. Breed integrity –There has been no action on the DNA submission/parentage testing. Breed type – There was lots of discussion. A photo array of different degrees on various traits was suggested. The Breed Type committee is directed to meet and return to BOD teleconference with a report. Commit-

tee consists of Alan Bruhin, RJ Creamer, Mike Elsbury, Mary Ann Keck and Bob Dinsmore. 2016 National Sale – Thank you to the MWSRS for offering a venue. Was agreed that National Sale should be held before junior ownership deadline. RJ Creamer reported that the Big Ohio Sale and Shropshire Classic will take place in Eaton, Ohio on May 12-14. Banner is still managing. Dorsets and Katahdins will be added. Probable Shropshire judge is either Aaron Crome or Mike Wright. Shrops should show and sell third after Suffolks and Southdowns. RJ said the old rule of selling one ewe for one ram and then two ewes for each additional ram will be used. Discussion followed about the Best Breed Type Ram and Ewe Awards. BOD would like to continue but wants to see a more up front presentation and more made of it during the show. Decided to make a class for the ram and ewe where each consignor could bring one animal to each. Again would sell right after the Champions and Reserves. RJ and Becky to remind Greg Deakin. ASRA would

supply sashes for the Champion and Reserve Champion Ram and Ewe. Brad Slutz will purchase and ASRA will reimburse. 2016 National Show – Becky reported that the Big E has offered a venue for the National Show as part of its 100th Anniversary. Big E hosted National Show in 2011 and it was very successful. Northeast Shropshire Association is in favor. A $5,898 premium scale is proposed. Money is added for the junior exhibitors exhibiting within the open show. The cost to the ASRA would be $250 to get the premium scale. Shrops would show on Sunday. Show staff is very friendly and supportive. A venue for dinner and meeting would be available. Display area, fleece show, Banner managed sale is available. Judges nominated at the exhibitors meeting for that portion of the show were Jeff Repasky, Steve Taylor and Bobby Spoonster.ASRA would be responsible for the fee if it elects to use a different judge. No other state fair has expressed interest. Alternative would be NAILE. Mandy Swartz moved to hold the National Show at the 2016

Any press releases regarding futurity, scholarship, flock starter as well as notes for the Banner would be submitted. Scholarships – Discussion took place regarding the number of applications received. Should the amount awarded be changed? No change was made. RJ Creamer reported that one of his members has requested that the ASRA again try to lobby for a premium increase for NAILE. Election of officers – The directors whose terms are up are RJ Creamer (OH), Rick Adams (IL), Re Call (NE/NY), Tim Roberts (SoWest), Jim Gruenhagen (North Central) and Mary Ann Keck (SoWest). RJ, Rick and Re were nominated by their regions. The others would have to be nominated from the floor at the Annual Meeting. Tim said he wishes to resign from the board after many years of service. Darrell Dockter moved and Jim Gruenhagen seconded to retain Jim Percival as President and Alan Bruhin as Vice President. Motion passed. Becky was dismissed from the room while the BOD reviewed her performance. She was rehired for another year at a $15,000 annual salary provided the required financial audits take place. With no further business, R.J Creamer moved to adjourn and Brad Slutz seconded at 2:30 p.m. Respectfully submitted, Becky Peterson

First in lead

Katherine Wenner of Ohio won the first place adult Lead Line competition at 2015 NAILE with a Shropshire lamb. Wenner, who began raising Shrops in 2006 as a young teen, won a scholarship from the ASRA in 2013. Wenner is currently working as a Legislative Aide in the Ohio House of Representatives. After graduating college in 2014, she spent time interning with the commercial turkey industy in Washington, D.C. (Turkey National Federatinon) before returning to Ohio. Her goal is to gain a more thorough understanding of the legislative process and connect with those representing the agricultural industry on Capitol Square. She will be returning to law school to become an agricultural lawyer soon. Wenner said she has always had a passion for clothing design and although she does not personally raise a wool breed of sheep, she enjoys the opportunity to advocate for the fiber. “I believe it is currently an undervalued product and has a lot of potential in the sheep

Katherine Wenner, 1st Place Adult Lead industry,” she said. Wenner said lead-in competitions are a great niche for her as it gives her an opportunity to combine her love of fashion design with her passion for the sheep industry. She is the daughter of Beth and Kevin Wenner of Lewis Center, Ohio.

HHH Stars of Louisville The seventh Stars of Louisville Shropshire Sale took place Nov. 14. The Sale Committee is happy to announce that this sale was once again the source of the Yearling Ewe Futurity winner! Also note that the Champion Sale Ewe was later shown by the consignor in the National Show where she placed fifth in a very strong class! Thirteen females collected on sale morning were put in order by Sam Wiford of Ohio. They were displayed in sale order for the 60 buyers who had signed up for the opportunity to bid. Ohio auctioneer, Dan Westlake, sold the sale and did a superb job, working hard on every sheep. Thanks again to the Sale Committee of Jim Brandt, Dennis Avery, R.J. Creamer, Jim Isler, Mark McCabe and Becky Peterson. Dorper secretary Doug Gillespie worked from the sale block and Steve Majchrzak was the ringman. Such a sale would not have been possible had it not been for the best set of sheep yet for this sale and the folks who came to bid on them. Randy Rife sold the Champion Ewe, a March ewe lamb, to Dalton Hicks of Oklahoma for $1,500. The Reserve Champion Ewe was the only yearling, consigned by John Melvin. She sold to Darrell and Janet Dockter of Washington for $1,400. The only fall ewe lamb was consigned by Dalton Hicks. She sold to Sam McDermitt of Indiana for $750. There were four January lambs and they averaged $550. The class winner was an Erik Mrozinski ewe who sold to Timothy Petry of Ohio for $600. Dalton Hicks’ ewe lamb was

second and brought $600 from Emily Ellison of Tennessee. CMJ Family of Indiana chose a Dockter ewe for $400. The Majors’ lamb brought $600 from Ohio’s Zane Melvin. There were two February ewe lambs averaging $862.50. The class winner was a City Limits lamb that sold to Erica Nightengale of Oklahoma for $1,250. Majors’ second place lamb went to Lane Falch of Missouri for $475. Four more March ewe lambs sold with the second place Mrozinski ewe going to Dennis Avery of Indiana for $1,400. Rife followed with an $850 lamb going to Vivian Stephenson of Wisconsin and a $750 lamb to Timothy Petry. Dalton Hicks sold his lamb to Kennedy Algire of Ohio. She brought $500.The five March ewe lambs averaged $1,000. The 13 head averaged $851.92. All 12 ewe lambs were nominated for the 2016 Yearling Ewe Futurity and at least eight of them were purchased by juniors and are eligible to compete in that contest. This was again a successful venue for the American Shropshire Registry Association. The official sale report can be read at www.shropshires.org. Shropshire breeders are encouraged to select early an elite ewe or two for this sale in 2016. The Sale Committee will begin to gather entries during the summer. Entry information will be available from the office or on www.shropshires.org. With NAILE one of the Shropshire crossroads in the country, it is very easy to arrange transportation and care. For more information contact sale manager Becky Peterson in the ASRA office. _______ Page 33

Shropshire Futurities for 2016 For the 15th year, The American Shropshire Registry Association will sponsor a Shropshire ewe lamb and yearling ewe futurity. The American Shropshire Association, in effort to get junior members more interested and involved, have again decided to have a Shropshire Ewe Lamb Futurity and Shropshire Yearling Ewe Futurity for 2016. The futurity will not only enhance the junior members ability to purchase extremely high quality breeding stock but will also make it more beneficial for the breeders to consign their very best animals. The rules of the futurity are relatively simple and are outlined below. You can buy a top quality ewe at one of the designated sales that has been nominated for the futurity, exhibit the ewe at the shows you normally attend and then send in your results on the point record form. A junior can add a top quality female to his or her flock, and possibly win back a sizable premium. The 2016 designated sales will include: Illinois Spectacular at Springfield, Indiana Premier Shropshire Sale at Greenfield, Shropshire Classic at Eaton, Ohio, Great Lakes Sale

National Junior Association

The youngsters of the Shropshire enthusiasts met during the NAILE event in November. They had a very good attendance and some parents even tagged along. The event started with some introductions and went into a small Skillathon contest arranged by Alan Bruhin. He had set up six test stations consisting of a judging class, equipment identification, breed identification, retail and whole sale lamb cuts, hay evaluation and a keep/cull decision. Eighteen youngsters from three age groups rotated around the room, visiting each station. In the end Jacob Wenner had the high score of 304 in the senior group, Taylor Young scored a 269 in the intermediate division and Brady Miller turned in a 230 for the juniors. Following the Skillathon, the juniors enjoyed pizza and beverages and then broke into their Shropshire regional groups to elect their directors and officers. The final results are: Indiana Director and President Rylie Miller Ohio Director and Vice President Jacob Wenner Illinois Director and Secretary _______ Page 42

Brianna Brockmann Pennsylvania & South Director and Treasurer Noah Collins Southwest Director Taylor Kemp New England/New York Director Addisen Nicholson. There were no representatives present for the North Central Region, the West Region or the Wisconsin/Michigan Region. Jansyn Van Horn of Kansas was present to receive her 2015 Scholarship Award. Congratulations, Jansyn! ASRA President Jim Percival reminded the other older members present to apply for the two college scholarships when they became eligible. They held a brief discussion regarding the Starter Flock Program where they decided to continue the monetary grant to fund the program in 2016.Youth Advisor and ASRA Director Alan Bruhin will assist in making contact with breeders to gather donations. Questions regarding the junior association or the Starter Flock can be directed to Rylie Miller, Alan Bruhin or Becky Peterson. In 2016 look for communications from Rylie and Brianna regarding junior association undertakings throughout the year. __________________ Shropshire Voice

2016 Starter Flock Program

The Flock Starter Program is a project undertaken by the National Junior Shropshire Sheep Association to award a group of Shropshire ewes to a deserving youngster new to the breed. After two successful years with 28 applicants, the program continues in 2016. Applicants are required to submit an essay to the Shropshire office that should include background information about themselves and their interest in sheep. This document should illustrate their goals and intentions with the animals should they win the award. There should also be a budget included in the paperwork that is sent in. Applicants are asked to type their essay and submit it by April 1. Please include mailing address and telephone number. All applicants should be between the ages of 8 and 20. The winner of the award will be notified and will receive a $1,500 credit voucher from the ASRA

to purchase two or more Shropshire ewes of his or her choice at any of the Shropshire sales in 2016. Application information will be available on www.shropshires.org and from the Shropshire office. In 2015, donations were made by the following Flock Starters: Chip Hallet Family, Don Knepp, Mark and Prudie Miller, Erik Mrozinski, Alan Bruhin, Emily Washburn, Schoolhouse Shropshires, Danny and Cynthia Rogers, Austin and Trent Bechtold, Claudia Snyder, Jim and Donna Gruenhagen, Doug Whittaker and Family, Dennis Avery, Gary Brockmann Family and Stacy Josefson. They joined Randy and Julie Rife, Glenn and David High and Mark McCabe who donated animals the year before. To ensure the success of this program, financial contributions are needed for this worthwhile cause. Contact secretary Becky Peterson, Youth Coordinator Alan Bruhin (wabruhin@utk.edu) or NJSSA President Rylie Miller, rmill53@tscstudents.net, with your support or inquiries.

ow that you have been refreshed, review it again.Try to follow it in breeding your Shropshires and bringing the right type out for shows and sales. At last year’s National Sale in Eaton, Ohio, the judge selected the “Best Breed Character” ram and ewe pictured at left. I’m also including a picture of a ram Emily Washburn showed at the 2003 All-American Junior Show. I thought his breed character was superb. Here is our “Best Breed Character” ram at the 2004 National Sale “Spectacular” sold to the Trew Family. Hopefully these pictures offer some insight. Like at Eaton last May:We saw the sheep, later the photos in ads and then they are forgotten. Let’s get focused as Shropshire enthusiasts on breed character. All of us need to strive to preserve it. If we don’t, we could very well be history!

You can do anything you want proves Shelby Frost Shelby Frost has been wheelchair bound since was 18 months old but the 13-year-old does not sit on the sidelines watching life pass her by. The 8th Grader is in her fourth year of raising and showing registered Shropshire sheep owned by her grandmother, Arleen Mack. Her grandmother knew Shelby enjoyed being outside so she would bring her out to their farm so she could be around the sheep. They had seen a boy at a sheep show

that used his wheel chair to lead his lambs around the show ring. Shelby showed her first lamb at their local fair by tieing the lamb’s hal-

ter to the side of her chair. She would grab the rope with her partial arm and pull the lamb’s head up and then push the chair into its chest. Shelby’s first chair was aluminum and lightweight and the yearling ewes were so heavy she would make her chair pop a wheelie while leading the ewes. Shelby had caught the attention of a local organization, the Diamond Hats, and they raised funds to buy Shelby a newer and heavier chair. This one will track through the sand of the show ring instead spinning its wheels and the ewes can’t jerk it around. Shelby enjoys showing sheep and each year she gets a little better at it. It has taken a little time to figure out the best way to have the chair customized. They are currently working on head pieces that can be changed for the different size sheep. The local ag teacher customized Shelby’s chair by adding a bar to the side that she can push against the sheep’s chest when setting it for the judge. Arleen says that Shelby is all serious and intense when she is in the show ring and the adjustments to her wheel chair give her a level

playing field so she can compete against everyone else. Since Shelby’s debut four years ago with her custom wheel chair her picture (shown here) has gone viral. Shelby’s family has sent the pattern for her wheelchair now to numerous people to help other wheelchair bound kids show sheep and goats. “Shelby was really shy and bashful when she first started showing but now she has made many friends,” Arleen said. Shelby was born with only one partial arm and one partial leg. She is the daughter of Stacy and Adam Guthrie of Mulhall, Okla. She has a younger sister, Madison.
