From the President It is with great anticipation and excitement that we begin 2008 as a Shropshire breed. Our breed has a new executive secretary-treasurer in Becky Peterson from the New England area. She was selected in Louisville and started her duties on December 1st. Becky can be contacted by mail at 41 Bell Road, Leyden MA 01337, by phone (413) 624-9652, and by e-mail at shropsec@hotmail.com. She will start doing registrations, transfers, and memberships on March 15th 2008. Currently, the Sheep Association & Registry is processing registrations for Shropshire breeders. Since Dale Blackburn’s passing the Iowa office has done an outstanding job of straightening out our registration

mess and getting registrations done in a timely manner. A big thanks to Carol Rueber who served as our secretary and to George Buckham who served as our treasurer. The McCabe and Creamer flocks are in the midst of lambing here the middle of January and it gets challenging in cold weather, but the birth of new lambs is what we all work for. 2009 will be an important year for the Shropshire breed as it marks the 125th year for our breed. Watch for activities as the 2009 year approaches. I look forward to seeing, visiting, and meeting all Shropshire breeders and enthusiasts in 2008 at the many sales and shows for this year. Board members in attendance: Bob Johnson, Mark McCabe, Re Call, Robert Dinsmore, Cody Hiemke, Ralph Lovely, Randy Rife, Bill Seals, Brad Slutz, Tim Roberts and Darrell Dockter. Absent: Norbert Jackson, Don Knepp, Carol Rueber and Ryan Webster. Additional attendees: Steve and Rinda Maddox, Christie Anderson and Becky Peterson Minutes of the last meeting were approved without dissent. The financial report was presented by George Buckham. Total income was $35,521.64. Expenses totaled $40,061.91; approximately $7800 of this owed from 2006. Discussion was held on what to do with donations in Dale Blackburn’s memory. It was noted Dale was a great supporter of the scholarship program. Mark McCabe moved that the monies sent in memory of Dale Blackburn be applied to the ASRA scholarship fund. Ralph Lovely second. Motion passed by unanimous approval. Ralph Lovely moved to approve the financial report, seconded by Randy Rife. Following discussion of clarity regarding the payment process by which

the ASRA receives the registration payments from the American Sheep Registry Association (ASR) the financial report was accepted by unanimous vote. Special Guest Wes Limesand, NDSU shepherd and member of the American Hampshire Association Board of Directors explained updates planned to the program that the registrations are ran through. It was noted that if the ASRA continues to lease the program but do their paperwork in-house, they would still benefit from the upgrade. Cost per registry will be 15 cents. Training would be provided for the new secretary. Advertising Committee: Darrell Dockter reported that the advertising budget is $1300. He asked if the fullpage Banner advertisement and the posting at Clublamb.com should continue. Mark McCabe moved, Robert Dinsmore seconded, to continue this advertisement. Motion passed with no dissent. Budget: It was reported that the 2006 to 2008 budget was approved in a previous board meeting. Club Lamb Committee: Robert Dinsmore said there was a good Shropshire whether show at NAILE. Junior/Youth Committee: Mark shared that the NAILE Junior show was well attended with good quality. A Shropshire judging contest for juniors at NAILE for next year and to hold a regional show in 2009. Potential regional shows in Oregon, Oklahoma and Pennsylvania were briefly mentioned. Web site Committee: Mark McCabe moved to indefinitely hire Rinda Maddox for the Web site coordinator and Steve to do advertising, paid on a quarterly basis, seconded by Darrell Dockter. Randy amended the ďż˝ _______ Page

motion to have the new president, new secretary, Rinda, and Darrell to look for a new Web site vendor. Tim Roberts seconded the amendment. Amendment was passed without dissent. Motion as amended was passed without dissent. Consensus was that the complete Voice be available on the Web site. Old Business: Clarification was offered that the monies approved in June for the Illinois Shropshire Region money were for the junior show at the Springfield Spectacular. Robert Dinsmore shared that there was concern over the move to make all national shows in Louisville. Much discussion followed. Randy Rife moved that a region can host a national show upon the Boards’ approval and that when the national show is not offered by a region it will be at NAILE. Ralph Lovely seconded. Tim Roberts amended the motion to state the Annual Meeting will be at NAILE. Bob Dinsmore seconded. It was pointed out that, since no one has requested the 2008 National Show and since the 2009 National Show (125th ASRA Anniversary) was predetermined to be held at NAILE, there should be no haste in reversing the decision previously made at the 2007 Annual Meeting in Wisconsin. It was agreed that the Board should further investigate the general memberships’ feeling on where the national shows should be held. Mark McCabe moved to table the amendment and the original motion. Randy Rife seconded. The motion to table was approved without dissent. A committee of three will be nominated to develop a survey. New business:The Voice. It was clarified that Ryan Webster’s term was up in 2007, but a typo in the Voice showed his _______ Page 10

term was up in 2008. The ASRA approved to fill the Illinois region’s vacancy left by Don Knepp with Roger Snyder for one year. [The term will only be for one year per ASRA By-Laws, Article VII – Vacancies, reads: “In case of vacancy of office, the Board of Directors may have power to fill such vacancy for a time not extending beyond the next succeeding annual members’ meeting.”]. Bill Seals seconded the motion. Motion passed with no dissent. Re Call recommended Sandy Cross to represent the ASRA for the New England District for a one year term. He will fill the position vacated by Ryan Webster. Second by Darrell Dockter. Motion passed without dissent. It was brought to issue that the minimum bid level was not adhered to at the 2007 National Sale. Additional discussion about the 2007 National Show ensued. It was pointed out that weights and scrotal circumferences were not taken. The sale average was the lowest in many years. It was agreed that the ASRA should better support the Illinois region’s efforts with the Shropshire Spectacular to once again make that a successful sale. Brad Slutz moved that the 2008 National Shropshire Sale be held in conjunction with the Springfield Spectacular, second by Bill Seals. Motion passed with one dissent. Bill Seals moves a letter be sent to the Illinois Shropshire Association requiring them to submit a list of 2008 National Sale judges by Jan. 1, 2008. Randy Rife seconded. Motion passed without dissent. 2008 National Show Judge recommendations were determined: 1.) Jim Brandt; 2.) Greg Beckmier;

3.) Brad Payne. The Board acted on the motion, as amended, passed at the Annual Meeting of the Membership on Aug. 2, 2007. Original motion: The American Shropshire Registry Association mandates that all state fairs and national shows require sheep to be slick shorn. Amendment to motion: amended to require ALL Shropshire shows be slick shorn. Motion passed with one dissent. Notice will be given in the next Voice. The membership will vote to add this to the ASRA By-Law at the next Annual Meeting. The meeting was closed to prepare for the secretary interviews. The Board engaged in considerable discussion in regard to what should be done about handling registrations. It was determined a decision should be made prior to starting the interviews. It was commented that a year ago there were many unhappy Shropshire breeders that were not receiving registrations and transfers. Now many breeders are very happy due to the excellent work done by the American Sheep Registries. It was also commented that various regions have expressed interest in bringing the registrations and transfer back in-house so that the personal contact of the Shropshire secretary can be had. Randy Rife moved that the registration and transfers be taken in house and done by the new ASRA secretary. Re Call seconded. Vote was 6 for, 2 against, 2 abstain – motion passed. The ASRA contract with American Sheep Registry is up at the end of March, 2008. Christie Anderson and Becky Peterson was interviewed for the Secretary position. Seven votes were placed for Becky Peterson and four were placed _______ Page 12

for Christie Anderson. Election of officers: Robert Johnson expressed his heartfelt thanks to his fellow board members that helped move the ASRA through a very troubling time. He expressed his belief that the ASRA is a stronger organization that it was in the recent past. With this Bob stepped down as president of the ASRA. Darrell Dockter nominated Mark McCabe for president. Robert Dinsmore moved to closed nominations. Mark McCabe was elected president by unanimous decision. Robert Dinsmore nominated Darrell Dockter for vice president. Nominations were closed. Unanimous ballot was cast and Darrell Dockter was elected vice president. Randy Rife, representing the Ohio District’s request, moved that the Ohio Classic be positioned as the National Shropshire Sale for 2009. Mark McCabe seconded the motion. Motion was passed with three dissents. A post-vote discussion followed. Concern was voiced that removing the national title from the Springfield Sale would have detrimental effects to the Springfield sale and would make the slick shearing rule difficult to enforce. Ralph Lovely moved to table the action on this motion until the next board meeting, second by Darrell Dockter. The decision to table the action on this motion was agreed upon without dissent. It was mentioned more promotional material was needed and interest was expressed in starting a Performance Committee. Robert Dinsmore moved to adjourn. Bob Johnson signed off by saying “goodbye.” Meeting adjourned at approximately 12:20 a.m.

Teleconference Meeting of Board of Directors By Becky Peterson ASRA Secretary (The following is a synopsis of the Board of Directors Teleconference. Any member of the ASRA may obtain a complete copy of the minutes by contacting the office.) The board met by teleconference on Jan. 27, 2008. Present were President Mark McCabe, Vice-President Darrell Dockter and board members Sandy Cross, Re Call, Carol Rueber, Roger Snyder, Bill Seals, Bob Johnson, Cody Hiemke, Ralph Lovely, Randy Rife, Norm Jackson, Tim Roberts, Brad Slutz, Voice editor Rinda Maddox, acting treasurer George Buckham, and secretary Becky Peterson. Robert Dinsmore was absent. The minutes of the meeting of Nov. 13, 2007 were approved. A limited financial report was given by George and Becky. They are working hard to pull the information back together from the past two years. Mark then gave the board a brief summary of the obstacles delaying the transfer of the treasurer’s office. The ASRA will continue to use the account at the Harvard State Bank in Illinois until some of these issues are resolved. There was discussion about the procedure to amend the By-Laws in order to move the office out of Illinois. The motion was made and seconded that the Board of Directors adopt the ByLaw amendment to change the location to the city and state of residence of the

secretary-treasurer. In accordance with the ASRA By-Laws, President Mark McCabe will call a special meeting of the membership to be held in Springfield, IL at the banquet held with the Shropshire Spectacular. The announcement of this meeting and the intention to amend the By-Law will be posted in the February and May issues of the Shropshire Voice. Roger Snyder will arrange the schedule of the meeting to be held in Illinois. Becky reported on the status of the new ASRA office. She is getting materials together and will be making the computer purchases soon. The contract with Associated Sheep Registries runs out March 15. She intends to be ready, equipped and trained to begin handling the registrations and transfers of Shropshire sheep. The committee reports started with discussion of the Shropshire Voice by Rinda Maddox. Rinda is working hard on the February issue. Mark suggested that the Voice and advertising committees get together and present a recommendation of Voice cover ad prices to the Board at the next teleconference meeting.. Rinda is covering this issue as editor and allowing Becky to acclimate to the obstacles of the office. Norm Jackson reported on the work of the 125th Anniversary committee. He asked that Becky write a letter to the NAILE requesting the 125th Anniversary show to be in Louisville in 2009. Once that has been granted, the committee can work to plan the different events and work with the NAILE management. There has been concern over the current web host not making timely updates. It was decided to change web hosts. Different hosts have been ďż˝ _______ Page 15

investigated by Rinda and Darrell Dockter. The motion was made by Randy Rife to employ Amanda Rull Print and Web Design who is Rinda’s daughter. Rinda is confident that she will be able to keep the site up to date and user friendly. There probably will be one to two weeks of down time while the site changes hosts. This change will most likely take place at the end of February. The entire Voice should be on the site. The address will remain Shropshires. org The Illinois Shropshire Association had requested the National Sale for 2008 and has supplied a list of judges as requested. The list was read accepted. Illinois will now host the National Shropshire Show and Sale at the Shropshire Spectacular in 2008. Darrell Dockter reported that the change has been made in the minimum bids for the National Sale. Starting in 2008, the minimum bid for yearlings will be $250 and $200 will be the floor on lambs. Mark McCabe has had numerous inquiries regarding a ewe sale at Louisville. At the upcoming NAILE Sheep Advisory meeting, the ASRA will express its intentions to hold a sale in Louisville during the 125th Anniversary Show in 2009. A committee has been formed of Chairman Roger Snyder, Vice Chairman Darrell Dockter, Ralph Lovely, and Norm Jackson. There was discussion regarding the slogan contest and reinstating the photo contest. A motion was made and passed for the ASRA to offer a monetary award for both contests. The winners of both could be selected by the members at the next annual meeting. Mark discussed the need to compensate acting treasurer George Buckham _______ Page 16

for stepping in after Dale Blackburn’s passing. The motion was made, seconded and passed to pay George for his time and effort. The ASRA was very fortunate to have George’s assistance and experience over the past 10 months. There was discussion about the Board of Directors’ meeting location at the Illinois sale in June. Having had no response from the Northfield, a room has been reserved with the Extension Service on the fairgrounds next to the sheep barn. A payment will be sent to hold the room. The meeting will be at 7 p.m. on Thursday, June 19 at the Extension Service meeting room. Cody Hiemke mentioned that the United Kingdom Shropshire Association had their 125th Anniversary last year and is putting together a 125th Anniversary UK Shropshire Flock Book and asked about an ad from the ASRA. He thinks the UK would reciprocate with an ad when ASRA puts out its book. A motion was passed to place a half page ad in the UK Shropshire Flock Book. Cody will take care of the ad. Roger Snyder reported that there is an invoice for the matching funds for the show in Louisville. Shropshire exhibitors are required to pay an additional $10 per head/group to the ASRA to assist with the premium fund at NAILE. There is concern that some of these fees have not been paid by some of the exhibitors. Also, Shropshire sheep that were shown but did not receive a premium should receive $10 from the ASRA. The secretary has been instructed to investigate the accounts of the exhibitors and to send bills for the unpaid entries and also premiums to those that did not receive them. Roger Snyder initiated a discussion about splitting classes at Louisville. The

yearling ewe class needs to be split in both the junior and open shows. There was also discussion regarding splitting the ewe lamb classes. It was felt that specific split dates would be easier to work with. The motion was made, seconded and passed that yearlings be split as follows: early yearlings, Feb. 14 and earlier, late yearlings, Feb. 15 and later. The motion was made, seconded and passed that the spring ewe lambs be split into three classes, January, February and March lambs in both the open and junior show. Becky will present these changes during the Sheep Advisory Meeting and is authorized to allow additional funds, if necessary, to support the ewe lamb splits. splits. Roger noted that there was a clerical error in the NAILE results. In the future, the ASRA will seat a board member at the table and check results as they

come in. Rinda will run a correction in the Voice and on the website. Mark would like to call another teleconf conference of the board in late March. He and Becky will also work on establishing hours for the Shropshire Registry office. There being no other business, the meeting was adjourned. adjourned.

Photo Contest to return along with Slogan Contest The ASRA will once again sponsor a photo contest, along with a slogan contest, both in commemoration of the 125th Anniversary of the Shropshire Association in 2009. The winners will 2009. be selected by the association members at the annual meeting in Louisville Nov. 2008.

In 1998 I earned my B.S. in Meat and Animal Science from UW-Madison. Upon graduating, I worked for four years marketing sheep, lambs, cattle and hogs working with farmers throughout Wisconsin for Equity Livestock Sales Cooperative, based in Baraboo, Wis. During the summer of 2002 I took an opportunity to return to Madison for an M.S. Degree with my undergraduate advisor, Dr. Dave Thomas. My research focus was determining the accuracy and predictability of ultrasound measurements on loin muscle area in lambs. Many statistics classes and a few thousand ultrasound measurement later, I completed my M.S. in February 2005. In April 2005 I moved to DuBois, Idaho to take a temporary position as a research assistant at the U.S. Sheep Experiment Station. I spent that summer working on some ultrasound projects, assisting with other research, and familiarizing myself with western range sheep production. This was an interesting and educational time for me, but living an hour from a populated area and a couple states away from my girlfriend proved an experience I didn’t want to extend. I decided to join my girlfriend, Ruth (on who’s farm I had worked growing up), in Berkeley, Calif. I moved from Idaho in September 2005 and was incredibly fortunate to find a job with Niman Ranch, based in Oakland, Calif. Niman Ranch is a high-end gourmet natural meat company that sources beef, pork and lamb from sustainable family farms and ranches; we sell to many of the finest restaurants and retailers in the country. In managing Niman’s lamb program I work closely with six family-run ranches in California, three in Utah and

one in Idaho to produce the consistently best seasonally-fresh lamb available for distribution nationwide. It’s a privilege, honor and good fortune to work with the lamb growers I do. I look forward to my term on the ASRA Board of Directors. I bring a fresh and enthusiastic approach to the organization. I intend for my production-oriented emphasis to yield production-oriented opportunities for other like-minded Shropshire people.

Brad Slutz Illinois District Greetings from Northern Illinois. My name is Brad Slutz. This past summer I was nominated to represent the Illinois Shropshire Association on the National Board. I am both proud and honored to have been selected to be on the National Board. I am 31 years old and reside in Sycamore, Ill. Sycamore is located in Nor theastern Illinois, about 60 miles west of Chicago. I grew up about an hour southwest of Sycamore in the little town of LaMoille, on my parents’ farm (Tom and Brad Slutz, Director - IL Dist. Connie Slutz, City Limits Sheep Farm). We have been raising Shropshire sheep since 1982 when we purchased our first Shrops from Kenny Jorsted. Over the years we have exhibited and sold Shrops throughout the Midwest. We have shown at Illinois, Indiana, _______ Page 35

Iowa and Wisconsin state fairs, along with Louisville, and sold Shrops at the Ohio Classic, Mid West Stud Ram Sale and the Shropshire Spectacular. Spectacular. Even though I live about an hour away from the farm, I am still very active with the flock and generally make it to the farm once a week. I try to attend all shows and sales, even the county fairs. My wife, Carol, and I have been married for seven years. We have two children, Jaedyn 4, and Drake, who was born on Nov. 19, 2007, just a few days after the show in Louisville. Over the past couple of years,I have been purchasing some ewes for Jaedyn and she has now started her own flock, City Limits Too. 2007 was a year of firsts for Jaedyn. She showed a sheep all by herself at both the junior show at the Spectacular and the showmanship class

at the National Show in Wisconsin. She also sold her first Shropshire this past year, one at the Classic and one at the Spectacular. Spectacular. In January, I completed my 10th year at 1st Farm Credit Services as an Agricultural loan officer. Letter to the Editor To: Board of Directors American Shropshire Association Dear Board Members: On September 16,2007 the New England Shropshire Association met, and on the agenda was the topic of the vote in Wisconsin regarding slick shearing. There was considerable discussion regarding how this vote came to happen at a meeting with only a very small number of members present. The New England Association voted to inform the National Board that the New England Association does not support a “slick shear rule” and request that the Board of Directors not pass this change to the By Laws of the Association. It was felt that members should have a right to present their sheep as they choose. A motion was made and passed to inform the Board of Directors that the New England Association recommends that the board recommend to fairs and shows that both classes for sheep shown with wool and slick sheared classes be offered. In support of this, the Big E has agreed to add 4 slick sheared classes to the Shropshire Show in 2008. Sincerely, Ann B. Call Recording Secretary New England Shropshire Assoc. Thoughts to Ponder By Randy Rife Director/Ohio District Let us all be concerned about the future of our industry. We are at a threshold with the explosion in feed and hay prices. The switch to hair sheep or Boar goats has been real, but they, too, must be fed. A long time friend in the sheep industry has just added Alpacas and no doubt his sheep numbers will drop. They, too, must be fed! But one powerful diff ference jumps out to me. How many people do you see eating Alpacas? They are just expensive “yard ornaments” with exorbitant vet bills! The severe drought of 2007 in many areas of our country will not continue. Pastures will green up and become lush again. Hay will become abundant and much cheaper. Grass and roughage are the mainstay of a sheep’s diet. Many times during the 1970’s and early ‘80’s, Elwin Newcomer from northwest

Ohio, after spending a lifetime being one of the most production-minded Shropshire breeders of all times, stressed to me, “Randy, remember, we are dealing with a ruminary animal. You don’t need to feed a lot of grain. Back to the basics is where we all must head.” The threshold I speak of is the opportunity of nurturing the young families that want to raise and show sheep. Our Shropshire breed offers so much with our mid-sized, functional, efficient, and most attractive animals that have a great disposition. Let us all be positive about our breed and try to encourage and help a new young person become the next Shropshire breeder from your area. This encouragement and help could come from many avenues. Maybe offering to breed their half a dozen females to one of your stud rams. Maybe paying

them with a few bales of hay in exchange for some much needed help with your extra barn chores on a Saturday. Maybe asking them to come along to a major show to help you with the event. Inspire a “fire in the belly” to become more involved. Personally inviting their family to your next breed picnic. Giving the new family next door your bottle babies and working with them to make sure they just don’t die, but grow into a starter flock for little Amy or Billy. Extend an offer to the local 4-H Club to host one of their meetings at your place with a tour of your sheep program. Provide refreshments and answer questions as to “why Shropshires”. Inspire young folks to want to be involved with our breed. We do have a great breed and much to offer. Let us cross over that threshold and make something positive happen!

Majchrzak wins Ewe Lamb Futurity 2007 was the sixth year for the National Ewe Lamb Futurity. Each year Shropshire Breeders have nominated more ewe lambs. It costs the breeder $20 to nominate each ewe lamb. This

Tyler Majchrzak with Bryant 07-02

year there was a total of 85 ewe lambs nominated, for a total purse of $1700. The winning young person, Tyler Majchrzak, received 20%, which amounted to $340. Second place paid 15% or $255, for Kaitlyn Fuss. Only five shows counted toward the point total. More than five shows were turned in, but only the five highest point totals were figured. This year NAILE was the National Junior Shropshire Show , therefore points counted double. The All American Junior Show also counted double. There were four different point leaders during the show season. Hallie Walker started out in the lead, and lead for the first two months. KaitlynWhiting then tied for the lead, but was passed by Kaitlyn Fuss in October.Tyler Majchrzak came from second to win at the end in Louisville.Thirteen places were paid out this year..

Shropshire youth enjoy the annual Quiz Bowl contest held each year at NAILE.

Shropshires to be used by Boys Scouts The Boy Scouts of America will have a picture of a Shropshire ram in the newest edition of their Animal Science merit badge pamphlet. The Boys Scouts of America contacted website coordinator Rinda Maddox requesting permission to use a color copy of a Shropshire from the youth page of the website. “The photo you provide would be used in the Animal Science merit badge pamphlet in a section that describes

many different kinds of sheep, with a bit of history on the breed’s origin. Proper credit would be given to your organization in our acknowledgments section, and we could even send you a copy of the book when it is published,” said Beth McPherson Editor of the Boy Scout pamphlets. The Grand Champion Shropshire Ram shown by Brianna Brockmann at the NAILE Junior Show was selected for use in the book. _______ Page 9
