From the President Every year as Shropshire breeders we look forward to lambing time. It is what we plan for and anticipate with great excitement. This year Marilyn and I have 11 ewes to lamb. The ewes were exposed to lamb from early January to mid-March. We just had three ewes that lambed when the temperature was between 0 and 10 below. At present we have five lambs (three ewe lambs, two ram lambs) from the sub-zero adventure. Three lambs appear healthy and two are battling pneumonia. It seems as if every year ewes find challenging times to lamb. If it were not challenging, everyone would have sheep. Every year I am glad when lambing season comes, but more excited when the last ewe has lambed. Every shepherd knows the great feeling finding that Shropshire ewe that has lambed, with twins and are both getting that first milk from their mother. That is one of the attributes we love about our Shropshire ewes. NAILE 2008 in Louisville was, once again, a very exciting time for our Shropshire breed. In our junior show we had 125 head shown, and that was one of the largest junior shows there. During our junior show, we tapped our seventh futurity winner, Kaitlyn Fuss of Maryland, with her Bryant bred ewe lamb. Her share of the $1840 purse for winning was $368. The Shropshire breed also had nearly 30 head of wethers shown which, was one of the largest classes in the market lamb division that

I can remember from recent years. Our breed was also well represented in the lead line division as we had many young people leading Shropshires. Our quiz bowl had five teams, being the most ever. We also had a room full of junior Shropshire exhibitors for our pizza party on Saturday afternoon enjoying each otherâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s company. â&#x20AC;&#x192; The Shropshire open show at NAILE was one of the larger breed shows with 127 head shown. This show had more numbers than we had had in recent years. This is probably a reflection of adding classes. We split the yearling ewes and had three ewe lamb classes (January, February, and March). One year ago at Louisville, our Shropshire board selected Becky Peterson as our next Executive Secretary. Becky has done an outstanding job of establishing office hours, attending many Shropshire events, and staying current on transfers and registrations. As a board, we voted a one dollar increase in registrations and transfers to help maintain our good office and to continue to fund our numerous programs and junior activities. 2009 is the 125th anniversary of our breed in the U.S. That is quite a benchmark for our breed. Several activities are planned for this year culminating in November at Louisville. Check other parts of the Voice and the Shropshire website for more on the 125th Anniversary. From the Secretary It’s hard to believe that a year has gone by already. I will say that it has been a good one for me. When I first heard about the need for a new Shropshire secretary a year and a half ago, the opportunity was all I could think about. The newness is over but I still spend the majority of my day thinking about Shropshire business! The bumps in the road are smoothing out. I have closed the financial books on 2008 and that report is in this issue. I appreciate the patience and understanding of those members who have questions or complaints about their accounts. I certainly have enjoyed hearing about everyone’s weather, traveling to the Midwest, studying bloodlines, taking pictures and meeting new folks. I particularly enjoyed meeting more of the young people at the Quiz Bowl in Louisville. We got off to a rather comical start regarding the identity of the new secretary but it proved how important the junior activities are to this association. In 2008 we noted the sad passing of Shropshire enthusiasts and the arrival of new shepherds.

BIG plans are underway for this year when we celebrate the 125th Anniversary of this association. It will give us all a chance to revisit the past and to look toward the future. Many people are involved with this effort but new ideas are always appreciated. There has been and will be more fundraising for this event. Baskets continue to be auctioned off at larger events. Hopefully a new logo will be chosen and applied to some highly desirable hats,T-shirts, sweatshirts, trophies and other things we may care to suggest be sold. We’re looking toward various regional shows this year in addition to a new sale of Shropshires females in Louisville next November to commemorate the Fifth Quarter of the ASRA. With midwinter upon us, we look toward the birth of the new lambs, watching their growth, selecting and promoting flock replacements and selecting future breedings. It sure breaks up the recent monotony of moving snow, feeding the fire and sanding the ice, at least here in the northeast. We also look forward to new challenges of 2009 with our economy and the different issues that face us all. We’ll weather the storm. We’ll spend time with our families and friends and see it through. We’ll continue to promote and enjoy Shropshires. Feel free to call the office anytime you have questions or issues or just want to visit. A note from the registration desk: fill in the information on the back of Fees to increase the paper and sign it as seller when the sheep is sold, especially if you hand the beginning March 1 papers to your buyer. It’s amazing how By Becky Peterson The economy is affecting everyone including the American Shropshire Registry Association. With the transition of the office and rising costs everywhere else, the Board of Directors has increased the fees by $1 to register and transfer sheep as of March 1, 2009. At that time the fee to register sheep will be $7 for ASRA members and $14 for non-members. There’s a good reason to pay your annual dues right there! The transfer fee will also increase by $1 to $6. No other fee increases are anticipated. Turn around time in the office continues to be within one week for the most part, usually less, if all is in order. Every effort has been made to complete and mail work so that it is received in time for your needs. Mail is opened the day it is received. If you have procrastinated, however, and need your papers tomorrow or before, the rush fee (double) applies. Remember to mark your envelope “RUSH” if that is the case. If you have doubts that the work will not reach you in time using standard mail services, you may also include extra funds for priority or express mail fees. A fee schedule and order form is returned with all work. These are also available on www.shropshires.org, as well as ram and ewe registration applications. If you are transferring sheep, please

Photo, Logo Contest â&#x20AC;&#x201C; last chance! By Becky Peterson Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s hard to believe there has been little interest in the photo and logo contest. With only a tiny FEW photos submitted, it was decided to extend the deadline for submitting photo. Please remember that the ASRA has approved $150 to fund this contest. Submit photo entries as 8x10 color photos printed on photo quality paper. All first and second place photos will become the property of the ASRA for future promotions. Send your entries to the ASRA office at 41 Bell Rd., Leyden, MA 01337. April 1st will be your last chance to submit photos. Photo entries will be displayed at the Shropshire Classic Sale in Eaton,

Ohio in May where they will be judged and the winners selected. The logo with The Farm Flock Favorite has been told it is out of date so if that is true, we need to replace it. Put your inner artistic talents to work and send an enthusiastic entry. Logos should be designed in high resolution and be suitable for production in color and black and white. The 125th American Shropshire Registry Association in 2009 By Norm Jackson, Chairman 125th Anniversary Committee 2009 is the 125th anniversary of the American Shropshire Registry Association. We are planning various events to celebrate throughout the year with the final and best to be held in conjunction with the North American International Livestock Exposition in Louisville in November. The anniversary event in Louisville will start on Saturday with junior activities along with the Junior Market Lamb Show. We will have our Anniversary Banquet on Saturday night. Sunday will be the Junior Ewe Show and we will

conclude with our 125th Anniversary National Show on Monday. In 2008 we had silent auctions at the Shropshire Spectacular Sale in Illinois and at the North American International Livestock Exposition in Louisville. Funds raised from these two silent auctions will be used for activities in Louisville this fall. We also plan to have silent auctions this year at the sales in Ohio, Illinois and Missouri to raise funds. We encourage any state organizations or Shropshire breeders to put items that we can use for these auctions. We are also planning to put together a year book to feature Shropshire Breeders. information about each breeder and could include pictures. Karen Johnson from Missouri is heading up the yearbook project. Work is also in progress on a new logo for the 125th Anniversary Show. A regional Anniversary Show will be held at the Indiana State Fair in August. Plans are also underway to have a re-

gional show on the west coast this summer. As plans develop we will have information in the Voice and on the Shropshire Web Site. We hope all our Shropshire Breeder can participate in the 125th Anniversary activities either on the regional or national levels or both.

Attention all Shropshire breeders! Baskets and yearbook information still needed By Karen Johnson We are now in a countdown to Louisville for the 125th anniversary of our breed. We will be having silent auctions at Eaton, Ohio, Springfield, Illinois, and Louisville to raise funds to put on a memorable anniversary. People are really attracted to homemade items to be auctioned. I am going to try and get something going in the way of some needlework for a basket in Ohio. I know very well that many of you are very creative and we need your help with this. Put your thinking caps on and see what you can put together for a basket at one of these sales. A basket of baby items sold very well in Louisville. I think one for older children would also go over big. I am just giving you some ideas to get you thinking. Letâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s all work to make this show in Louisville one will long remember. We would like to have a yearbook of current Shropshire Breeders that would include pictures and about your flock and family involvement. As an example: RoKaJo became Shropshire breed-

ers when our two youngest daughters needed sheep to show and we did not want to have four flocks of Suffolks to show. We liked the size and meatiness of the Shropshires. The girls bought two yearling ewes, two ewe lambs, and a ram lamb from Glen Ebesbacher of Nebraska. It was a great friendship and we were most happy with the Shropshires. Shropshires are the only breed we now own for many reasons. I will elaborate on that in our article. We now have grandchildren showing Shropshires. Please take a few minutes to tell your story, type it up and either snail mail it or email it. Please include pictures of you and your family, too. If you need your pictures returned, include a self-addressed stamped envelope and we will scan the and return them to you. I hope every breeder will send us some information. Quality runs deep at 2008 NAILE By Becky Peterson The 2008 National Shropshire Show was held at the North American International Livestock Exposition in Louisville, Ky. Nov. 20. Jim Brandt of Anna, Ohio sorted through the entries. There were 163 Shropshires entered while 127 head were shown. ICM Shropshires (Isler, Creamer and McCabe) took home the Champion Ram Banner with Senior Champion McCabe 0720 “Overtime” who came out of the Yearling Ram Class. The Reserve Champion Ram was the Junior Champion and winner of the late Junior Ram Lamb Class for Randy and Julie Rife, Rife’s 08-136 “Brimstone.” City Limits Sheep Farm’s second yearling ram was chosen as the Reserve Senior Champion Ram. The Reserve Junior Champion was the second late junior lamb shown by Catherine Mrozinski. Thirty-six rams were shown. In the ewe division, Grand Champion honors went to Emily Washburn on her Early Yearling Ewe entry Rife 07-086. The Reserve Champion Ewe was Bryant 07-96 for Sean Bryant. She came out of the Late Yearling Ewe Class. These two were the Senior Champion and Reserve Senior Champion. The Junior Champion Ewe was the winning February ewe lamb for Emily Washburn. The Reserve Junior Champion came from the March Class for Highlife Farm. A total of 91 were shown in the ewe division. The Gordon Anderson Memorial Award for the Best Pair of Ewe Lambs went to Emily Washburn, as did the Hartzell Trophy for the Best Group of _______ Page 12

Three Lambs. Sean Bryant was awarded the Verne Hoffman Traveling trophy for the Best Pair of Yearling Ewes. The McKerrow Family Trophy for the Best Five Head was awarded to Emily Washburn on her flock. Emily also won the coveted Premier Exhibitor Banner. This was a very impressive show and the quality ran much deeper than just the top end of the class. Congratulations to those on their accomplishments with the sheep they had raised, bought and sold. New Shropshire Sale at NAILE By Randy Rife Plans are being finalized to hold a Bred Yearling Ewe and Ewe Lamb Shropshire Sale in Louisville during the 2009 North American International Livestock Exposition.The Sale Committee is tentatively planning for a 10 a.m. EST sale on the Saturday ahead of the junior breeding sheep shows on Sunday. Currently five other breeds hold sales that afternoon and evening. Becky Peterson, National Shropshire Secretary, has agreed to manage this

prestigious offering of elite Shropshires. Your board has discussed holding a sale in Louisville for a couple of years and decided to kick off the 125th Celebration with the first of these annual events. To make this the success expected by all, potential consignors need to start planning to consign a couple of their extreme top females. Plans will be completed by April and all information will be on the breed website and in the next issue of the Voice. The committee anticipates 25 to 30 high quality females

Oregon to hold 2009 Regional Show By Chris Peppmeier NW Shropshire Breeders Association Secretary/Treasurer To celebrate the 125th anniversary of the American Shropshire Registry, the NW Shropshire Breeders Association is hosting the 2009 Regional Shropshire Show at Oregon State Fair on August 23, 2009. The show will be held in conjunction with the open class sheep show that runs from Thursday, Aug. 20 – Tuesday, Aug. 25, and will also include a very special junior Shropshire show. The NW Shropshire Breeders Asso-

ciation has logged many hours planning this regional show. Not only will there be great awards for all the class winners, but there will be theme baskets to raffle off and then the association will host a lunch for all exhibitors at the conclusion of the show. Plan to come to the Regional Show and visit the Pacific Northwest where you can drive to the coast or Mt. Annual Meeting of the Members Louisville, Ky., Nov. 19, 2008 The meeting was called to order at 7:05 p.m. by President Mark McCabe. Forty-seven were present. Mark introduced secretary/treasurer of one year, Becky Peterson. Becky then reported to the membership the financial report as of Nov. 11. (This is also listed in the minutes of the Board meeting held earlier in the afternoon and a fiscal report ending Dec. 31, 2008 is also included on Page 28 of this issue.) It was noted that it was a year in transition with an interim treasurer expense and new office setup expense. There were also expenses from 2007 paid in 2008. These gray areas made for what appeared to be a loss of $6,345.84. Three members of the Board of Directors had reviewed the reports earlier in the week.There were no questions from the floor. Bill Bryant moved and Karen Johnson seconded to accept this report. The report was accepted. Mark then discussed with the group the highlights of 2008. The youth program is working well. Tim Roberts and Rebecca Krinsky have been working very hard to increase the youth involvement. The junior show had 140 Shropshires entered. The Futurity Program has been extremely successful. The Quiz Bowl event is a fun time held earlier in the show. Several open shows in the Midwest boasted Shropshires as the largest numbered breed shown. Eight Scholarship applications were received and judged. Becky gave a synopsis of the Board of Directorâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Meeting. Plans are underway

for the 125th Anniversary in 2009. Slogan and photo contest entries will still be accepted until March 1. There will be an attempt to send the February Voice by bulk mail to cut postage. An Ambassador Program for youth has been suggested. The ASRA is encouraging breeder participation in the NSIP program. The Shropshire Spectacular will again be the National Show in 2009. Plans are underway for a Stars of Louisville Sale in 2009. A 125th Anniversary banquet is also anticipated. Becky encouraged breeder advertising in the Voice to help support the publication. The Breeders Index makes an excellent phone directory of Shropshire breeders. The Voice mailing list will be updated. Becky asked for introductions of the group. Norm Jackson gave a quick overview of the work done by the 125th Anniversary committee. The celebration will end in Louisville with a three-day event starting with the Ewe Sale and Wether Show on Saturday. A buffet banquet is planned for Saturday evening. The junior show will follow on Sunday morning and the open show will run on Monday.There are plans to add to the Centennial Book published 25 years ago. Karen Johnson has asked for photos and information from breeders to help.There will be a hospitality booth during the shows. There have been, and will be, basket auctions, as well as lambs donated, to help fund the event. There are two regional shows planned for 2009 to help with the 125th. Election of directors was next. There are several directors whose terms expire in 2008. Norm Jackson of Indiana was re-nominated by the Indiana Association; Jim Percival was nominated by the Ohio Association to replace retiring director Randy Rife. Gary Brockmann

was nominated by Illinois to fill the late Roger Snyder’s expired term and Sandy Cross was re-nominated by the New England group. In accordance with the current bylaws, directors from districts not having active state or regional associations shall be elected at the annual meeting of the members. Mark presented this slate from those such districts: Robert Dinsmore and Ralph Lovely for the Pennsylvania and South Districts and Bill Seals for the West District. Motions were made and seconded to accept the slate of directors as presented. Mark noted that Randy Rife is retiring after many years on the board. His service is much appreciated. Becky reminded the members who are exhibitors of the Matching Funds program for the Louisville premiums. The contribution to the premiums from the ASRA is over $2500 this year with

the addition of some classes. Becky requested that those exhibitors who haven’t paid their fees to the ASRA do so before the show the next day. Bob Johnson noted the passing of Illinois director Roger Snyder. There has been a desire to honor Roger with an award in his name but in fear of not acknowledging someone else who has passed, Bob reported on the Board’s plan to provide a “ringside seat” at the 2009 show for all of those Shropshire enthusiasts who have left us. Also some histories can be put together and presented during the 125th Anniversary Banquet. There being no other business to come before the membership, the motion was made and seconded to adjourn. Board of Directors Meeting Louisville, KY, Nov. 19, 2008

(The following is a synopsis of the minutes of this meeting.)

The meeting was called to order at 1 p.m. by President Mark McCabe. Roll Call: Present were Directors Bill Seals, Darrell Dockter, Ralph Lovely, Brad Slutz, Mark McCabe, Re Call, Cody Hiemke, Randy Rife, Robert Dinsmore, Tim Roberts, Norm Jackson, Bob Johnson. Dave Simms of Illinois had been appointed to fill Roger Snyder’s term and was present. Jim Percival was present as the incoming director from Ohio. Director Carol Rueber was absent. ASRA member Ken Visocky was also present. Voice Editors Rinda and Steve Maddox were present. Becky Peterson was present in the capacity of Secretary/Treasurer. The Minutes of the June 19, 2008 meeting had been printed and previously distributed to all attendees. Bob Johnson moved, and Bill Seals seconded, to accept the minutes as presented. Bob Johnson inquired of the state of the incorporation. Becky reported that she is working on it and hopes to have

it completed soon. The Treasurer’s Report had also been distributed. It included a Balance Sheet and Profit & Loss Statement generated by Quickbooks as of Nov. 11.Total assets on hand are $40095.04. Total net loss for the year is $6345.84. This includes the $5000 paid to George Buckham for the interim treasurer position for 2007 and also purchases for setting up the new office. Bob Johnson, Re Call and Tim Roberts had reviewed the materials supplied by Becky and approved of the work done. A full audit will be done at the end of a full year and a condensed copy will be sent to each director. Committee Reports Budget – Re Call and Becky had pulled together the budget and then met with Sandy, George Buckham and Carol Rueber. It appears that 2009 will begin with about $29,000 in the checking account. Re estimated 2009 income of $42,000. She also estimated nearly $50,000 in expense. Everyone noted that now after a full year of recordkeeping, we will have a better idea of the finances of the association. One more year will clear the muddy areas. It was decided to raise registration fees to $7 and raise transfer fees by $1 to $6. This fee increase will take effect on

March 1. 125th Anniversary– A Monday show has been requested for NAILE 2009. The banquet is tentatively planned for Saturday evening on the grounds, to hopefully include the junior exhibitors. Larry Mead has agreed to be the MC/ speaker. Past ASRA presidents would be invited and recognized. Hopefully a Powerpoint Presentation could be done with some historical pictures, etc. Norm hopes that some of the regional groups could take on some of the tasks of the program. There is a fund-raising silent auction going on in the barn now and more will occur at the sales and events in 2009. Special ribbons will be requested. Nancy Cessna is looking at special awards for the champions and class winners. Maybe there could be a special class that will be solely funded by the entries. A hospitality area will be set up offering coffee, soda, cookies, etc. during the shows. Indiana State Fair will host a Regional 125th Show in 2009. Darrell said that Oregon State Fair also plans on a show. A show is also anticipated at the Big E in the east. The 125th Celebration will need to do some serious fund-raising in order to make the event needed. Becky asked

for the floor and suggested calling the 125th Celebration the Fifth Quarter.The Champion Ram selected could be christened “Fifth Quarter”. The Champion female could be christened by a similar name (Randy had suggested “Ten Bits”). Donated ewe lambs will be sold in each of the three major Shropshire sales in 2009 to help fund the 125th activities. There has been very little interest in the photo and slogan contest.The deadline will be extended. Photo deadline could be extended to vote on the winning photo at the Classic Sale. Slogan deadline will be extended to March 1st. Advertising and Voice – Darrell and Janet Dockter will work on the ad for the Banner. Darrell had asked about the Club Lamb page link for 2009. The cost of this is $250. Breeders World is $195. Tim moved and Norm seconded to spend the $445 on those two links. Motion passed. Voice advertising seems to be slowing. Prices are very reasonable, even low, but participation is slight. It is mostly advertising that financially supports the Voice of the ASRA. The directors will go back to their districts and try to encourage their constituents to participate and advertise their flocks. Supplementary Voice subscriptions �

were discussed to help offset the cost of production. The October issue cost over $7 per piece to publish and mail. The current Voice mailing list contains Shropshire breeders and owners that have registered or transferred sheep in the past 2-½ years. The Finance Committee had recommended that we try to mail one issue via third class bulk mail to save a considerable amount of money in postage. That route will make a longer delivery time. The February issue would be the one to try as there isn’t as much timely information. This will not be done with the May issue. Becky and Rinda will investigate this. Sandy moved and Re seconded to attempt a bulk rate mailing of the upcoming February issue. There was also an inquiry regarding a member directory once a year, possibly in the Voice. There was concern

that such a directory would decrease participation in the Breeders Index that members pay $30 for. There was also discussion about sending new members welcome packets. Transfers are normally sent to the person paying the transfer fee, whether the breeder or the new owner. The secretary will continue to send complimentary, welcoming materials to new owners of Shropshire sheep, whether or not they are members. Breeders transferring sheep should specify where transferred papers are to be sent. Youth – Tim Roberts reported on the Quiz Bowl activities from the previous Saturday. It was the largest group so far and there were juniors present from several states. The youngsters were encouraged to share their opinions and viewpoints. Tim would like to consider holding this youth event at a

neighboring bowling alley. The youth present had thought that was a fine idea. Tim and daughter Rebecca are working on a fund-raising activity that the youth could manage. They also are considering an Ambassador program and an advisory group similar to what other breeds are doing. Mark reported on the futurity program and the scholarship. Juniors had submitted records on 24 lambs over the summer. There were 21 lambs at the junior show.The placings were tight. Eight scholarship applications had been received, all good and excellent, indicative of the quality of youth participating. The wether show was the largest in memory also with 37 Shropshire wethers exhibited. Performance – Cody Hiemke has received some response on the NSIP articles. He continues to work on getting information together for a Shropshire program. He also reminded the board that he will scan lambs again at the Spectacular in June. Old Business National Sale request for 2009– The sale location was discussed. Both Ohio and Illinois had requested to hold the National Sale. Dave Simms discussed plans for the Spectacular and Randy dis-

cussed the plans for the Classic. He also suggested possibly rotating the site between Illinois, Ohio and Missouri. After a ballot vote, the 2009 National Sale will be held in Illinois. Dave Simms later reported that the following list of judges has been nominated by Illinois: Jared Poynter, Stan Poe and Dan Spilde. This list will be approved by the board at a later date. North American Sale for 2009–Randy Rife had resumed the task of investigating this sale from Roger Snyder. Randy had then attended the different breed sales on Saturday and talked with several people about how the different breeds handled their sales. There is a possibility that photos could be taken of the entries and be posted on the web site. There is also an opportunity to pregnancy check the bred yearling ewes. He proposed that the ASRA run the sale itself and hold it at 10 a.m. on sale Saturday with a committee of himself as chair, Bob Johnson, Jim Brandt, Mark McCabe and Becky Peterson. A percentage of any profits on the sale will be put toward the youth programs. It was decided to try to get commitments for at least 20 head by July 1st before proceeding with the event. Secretary’s Contract – It was noted that the secretary has an annual contract and it needed to be addressed and renewed. Becky was dismissed from the meeting temporarily. Minutes of the Executive session were then taken by Rinda Maddox. Darrell Dockter moved and Ralph Lovely seconded to extend Becky Peterson’s contract by one year.A motion was made by David Simms and seconded by Darrell to increase Becky’s annual salary by $1000 to $14,000. The meeting was returned to open session and Becky was asked to return to the meeting. Total By-Law Revision – Cody Hiemke reported that the bylaw committee had met via phone conference last month to work on the total By-law revision that is required periodically. Cody had previously summarized their recommendations and presented them ahead of time to the board to review. These revisions were discussed at this meeting and will be further addressed at the board meeting in June. (A copy of the current bylaws, with proposed amendments, can be requested of the ASRA office.) Judge Evaluation – Ken Visocky had requested to come before the board regarding Shropshire judge evaluation and conduct. Discussion followed about

holding clinics and seminars as other breeds have done. Discussion turned to breed type and judging standards. Sandy suggested providing judges with standards and photos of ideal breed type. Different ways of selecting a “Best Headed Shropshire” were discussed. Pictures of classic ram and ewe heads will be added to the current judging standards and sent to judges for major sales and National Shows including the All-American. Bob Dinsmore noted that he had someone that will craft an item of an ideal Shropshire to sell if the model can be provided. 2009 NAILE Judge Selection – The board nominated four judges as follows: first choice, Brad Payne; second choice, Craig Beckmeier; third choice, Heath Geiman; fourth choice, Bill Webster.This list will be submitted to the committee at NAILE. Brad Slutz asked about the status of the Matching Funds for the Open Show. Most of the exhibitors have paid, the others have been asked. The increased premiums offered this year were funded by these matching funds and exhibitors will be required to pay before they come into the ring. Invoices have been distributed and funds will be collected prior to the show.

Other new business – Memorial Scholarships – The passing of ASRA director Roger Snyder was noted. There had been suggestions to honor Roger in many ways. Bob Johnson discussed the number of members who have passed away and no commemoration was made. Different ways to honor all of those who have passed were discussed. It was decided that a rocking chair be placed at one end of the show ring and that a sign be placed on it “reserving the seat for all of the Shropshire supporters (list) who have passed in the past 25 years”. The Anniversary Committee will procure the rocking chair and Sandy Cross will foot the expense. Election of Officers – Bob Johnson moved to retain the same officers for the coming year; Sandy Cross seconded. There was no discussion but thank yous were expressed to those who have worked so hard in the past two years. The motion passed. Re Call stated that the New England Shropshire Organization has offered to hold a Northeast national regional show at the Big E. However, the Big E offers both slick sheared and fitted classes. The board stated that the ASRA cannot support the regional with the fitted classes. Becky was instructed to contact the group and explain that they would need to offer slick classes only in order to hold a national regional show. Also, the youth regional shows would have to be 100% slick shorn in order to receive $300 for youth funding. Her slick shorn Washburn 548 was the Junior Champion Ram. Emily showed the Reserve Junior Champion Ewe, a slick shorn junior ewe lamb. Emily also had the first place pair of Ram Lambs. John Cross of Gorham, had Reserve Grand Champion with his Senior Champion ram lamb, Brockman 1053. Bishop & Bishop Shrops, Gouverneur, NY had Reserve Junior Champion ram with their Intermediate ram lamb, Adams 08-18. Hallie Walker of Williamstown, MA showed the Grand Champion Ewe, a slick shorn Senior Champion yearling ewe, Rolling Hills Farm 7005. This ewe was also named the Best Shropshire. Ryan Webster showed the Reserve Grand Champion Ewe, the Junior Champion Ewe, RIW 8-7, a junior ewe lamb. Meet your Directors Gary Brockmann Illinois District Greetings to all Shropshire Breeders! My name is Gary Brockmann and I will be representing the Illinois Shropshire Association on the National Board. I have been raising sheep for 41 years. I am 49 years old and have been married for 19 ½ years to my wife, Vicky. We have two children, Brianna, 12 and Austin, 9. I have worked for Chrysler in Belvidere for 14-½ years and work in the materials department. Vicky has been with PPG Industries, Inc. for 21-½ years as a Technical Service Rep., PPG supplies Chrysler with paint. I have lived in this area all my life. My wife and I built a house on 10 acres on the back corner of the family farm in 1992. We are located 24 miles south of the Wisconsin line and 60 miles west of Chicago near Rockford, Ill., off of I90. I also serve on the Boone County 4-H Sheep Producers as vice president where we make improvements on the shows and upgrading the facilities. I got started raising Shropshire sheep as a 4-H project. I have shown at Illinois, Wisconsin, Indiana, State Fairs and the North American International Livestock Exposition in Louisville. My children are actively involved in 4-H and show their sheep at the county fair and other junior shows. I run a flock of 28 Shropshire ewes and 10 Oxford ewes. I have helped many young individuals by put_______ Page 30

ting on a sheep fitting clinic and donated a ewe lamb for a 4-H’er to get started in sheep. I enjoy working with individuals who truly want to learn about raising Shropshire sheep. Jim Percival Ohio District Jim Percival is the newest National Director from the State of Ohio. Jim, and his wife Denise, live on a small farm in Xenia, Ohio. Together, in 1992, they founded “Schoolhouse S h ro p s h i re s ,” t h e foundation of which came from the original Percival flock that was started in 1970 by Jim’s parents, Harry and Nadine. The Schoolhouse flock currently has 50 Shropshire and 10 crossbred ewes. Jim and Denise have two children, Jason who is married to Beth and Jackie who is married to Jeff Barnes. Jim and Denise are the secretary/treasurers of the Ohio Shropshire Association. Jim serves as the vice president of the Ohio Sheep Improvement Association Board, serves on the board of the Ohio Sheep and Wool Program, as well as on the Legislative Committee of the ASI. When asked about his election to the American Shropshire Registry Association board, Jim stated, “ I am very excited about being elected to the National Shropshire Board. The Shropshire breed has made exciting strides in the past few

years and I am extremely motivated to help continue the momentum. “We are a growing breed and we need to continue to improve our breed. One of the greatest things about our breed is the wonderful people that breed and raise Shrops. In my 35+ years of raising and showing Shrops, most everyone I have met has always been willing to help others become better and I think that sets us apart from other breeds. “I look forward to seeing old friends, and meeting new, as we attend some of the fantastic activities planned during the 125th Anniversary year of the Shropshire Breed .”

Letters to the Editor Writer protests ASRA actions I am writing in protest of the actions taken by the American Shropshire Registry Association Board in regards to several recent events. Firstly, I am in full support of the need to mandate, at the national level, the requirement for slick shearing at every Shropshire exhibition, but the action taken by the board at a show attended by the minority of the members was outlandish. A decision of this magnitude can only truly be made through a referendum of the members and not solely influenced by a few letters written by those claiming to represent the majority. If this organization is going to continue to be a leader in the sheep industry we must move with vision to the future, and the future is the slick sheared sheep for show. This is supported by the failing U.S. textile industry, and the fact that most times it costs more to shear a sheep than the wool is worth. Secondly, a decision was made in violation to the published catalog for the North American International Livestock Exposition (NAILE). The board brought it on itself to decide that the additional monies paid in to the ASRA would not be returned to the exhibitors in accordance with the protocol set forth. This decision was made to supplement additional premiums at the show. If the board would have wanted to do this for the 2009 show I would not be opposed, but to make the decision that

contradicts the catalog is overstepping the boardâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s bounds. I have paid into this program for a number of years and have never received the refund. I demand that the monies owed to myself and the other exhibitors be paid, not because of the financial basis, but on principle. Recent decisions regarding fees, paperwork, and complications are moving to drive away new members, as opposed to, encouraging future growth of our association and industry. The past poor management and oversight may have led the association into a corner financially, but raising costs and adding complications to the members is not the path to choose. I believe that there are many alternatives that can be followed to improve the organization, as I conveyed to Mark McCabe at NAILE. I look forward to a response from the board as to the decisions made for the 2008 NAILE and the referendum for slick shearing. David Harrell Franklin, Indiana

Letters Opportunity Knocks Every year and every year our Shropshire Board, just like Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m certain, most breed associations and all entities for that matter, hash and rehash budget concerns. These same concerns are currently being addressed by all government entities, businesses and most every family household across our nation. Each and every Shropshire breeder, from the starting 4-Her to the long time, large flock owner are concerned with ďż˝ _______ Page 35

his or her costs and bottom line.We are all forced to become more efficient with our enterprise. Our breed is currently raising fees. The new rates are in line with other breeds and are substantiated. My concern is are we getting the most bang for our buck. To keep progressing as a breed we must all promote at every opportunity. We are not taking full advantage of an advertising venue that is out there for our breed. That is “Breed Notes” in each and every issue of the Banner Magazine. Greg Deakin encourages and welcomes breed notes. He would devote at least a page in each issue to Shropshires and more if we provided more. He would also include pictures at no cost. Association Secretary Becky Peterson can’t submit these notes if we don’t provide her something of interest to use. She can’t fire the cannon without ammunition. We all like to read about what’s going on across the country with our breed. Each and every one of us can tell about some Shropshire activity in our own county or state, about experiences the new family has their first year. Include human-interest pictures, anything that has Shropshire significance, even a tale from by-gone years. Let me share an example: The longtime Shropshire Breeder, Farrell Shultz of DeGraff, Ohio, at his July, 1958 production sale, started the sale selling 1837, his Champion Ram from the fall before at the Chicago International Show. The bidding swiftly took off and reached $2300 (an exorbitant price for that day).The Auctioneer handed the microphone to Farrell for a bid bolstering comment. Farrell quickly replied on the mic, “All I can say is that’s an awful lot of money for a sheep!” _______ Page 36

This is a true story. I was not in attendance but years later got to visit the burial site under an old apple tree where Carl and Priscilla Fischer of Dexter, Michigan had buried 1837.That price was a record for a Shropshire at auction that stood for many years. Now let’s get off our duff and start sending information to Becky for Banner Notes, for the Voice and for the Shropshire Website. Just consider… there are nine issues of the Banner per year. Their advertising rate is more than $400 per page. We are missing out on at least $4000 per year of free exposure, free advertising, and free Shropshire promotion. The Shropshire Sheep Package– Appearance By Cody Hiemke Wisconsin-Michigan Director The article I submitted for the October 2008 issue of the Shropshire Voice discussed the size and scale of the modern American Shropshire. In this issue I would like to discuss the appearance of our modern American Shropshire– specifically the appearance of the Shropshire head and its conformity to the breed description. A standard is needed to evaluate Shropshire appearance. The American Shropshire Registry has published various Standards of Excellence and Judging Standards during the course of American Shropshire history. The 1885 “American Shropshire Sheep Points of Excellence” was published in The American Shropshire Registry Association – The First Hundred Years. There is little difference between the 1858 standards to those published in 1983, though it is undeniable the breed went

through major changes in that 98 year period. Fortunately, in the late 1940s and 1950s progressive breeders once again began selecting for more traditional, larger, open faced sheep after realizing the faults in following the fad of selecting for the tiny and woolly Shropshires of the 1940s. The most recent Shropshire Judging Standard was published in 1991. It is by these standards, and an understanding of those previously published, that I evaluate Shropshires on their physical characteristics. Since my family first boarded McKerrow’s sheep in the very early 1980s I have noticed a deviation from traditional Shropshire breed type. Our national Shropshire flock has shown an increase in coarse-nosed and longeared sheep. Recently, when evaluating many Shropshires, I have seen a distinct resemblance to the Oxford breed. Last November in Louisville, I noted a peculiar trend that many of the ewes had long ears but relatively straight noses, whereas many of the rams showed more acceptable ear length but noses with a slight rise to a more prominent roman presentation. I decided to survey as many sheep as possible for ear length and nose shape. I scored 26 ewes and 28 rams on a numerical scale from one (1) through seven (7). A score of one (1) represented very dished faces and short ears, a three (3) represented straight noses and medium length ears, and seven (7) represented very roman noses and drooping ears. Survey results are shown above. This was not a scientific study, and like our traditional judging system is only one person’s opinion. However, it is my belief that these results verify the trend that modern Shropshires have drifted away from the published breed type guidelines and that many breeders have not discriminated against this drift. The reasons for the breed type drift may be many: the long absence of a published standard, greater focus on structural and other physical appear-

ance characteristics now that the wool doesn’t hide some of those faults in the show ring, and/or a general mob mentality and willingness to “go with the flow” without stopping to question what has happened. I fear that this change is the result of cross-breeding, sometimes as a result of using rams that are represented as pure but may not be. Whether intentional or not, utilizing non-pure Shropshires within a Shropshire flock may diminish other inherent qualities of the Shropshire, particularly less tangible ones like hardiness and maternal traits. By writing this article I hope to bring some attention back to breed type. By publishing the Shropshire Judging Standards (which follows on next page) I hope breeders are reminded what the physical appearance of the Shropshire should be, particularly some of the newer breeders that have begun raising Shropshires in the past decade.

Fuss wins ewe futurity By Mark McCabe Futurity Coordinator Congratulations to Kaitlyn Fuss for winning the seventh National Shropshire Futurity. Her ewe lamb, Bryant 08-39, was nominated by Bryant Shrops and garnered her check for $377.20.This was the second year in a row that Bryant Shrops bred the winning futurity ewe lamb. Kaitlynâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s point total of 67 points of a possible 70 was the highest point total in futurity history. She purchased here winning ewe lamb at the Shropshire Classic Sale in Eaton, Ohio. The other two sales for youth to purchase futurity ewe lambs are the Spectacular Sale at Springfield, Ill. and the Midwest Stud Ram Sale in Sedalia, Mo. Tyler Bruhin was second and won $290.20 with 62 points. His ewe lamb was nominated by Rife Shropshires. Tyler led the point total for the last month but at Louisville, where the points are

This was the largest number ever with a purse of $1840. The 24 ewe lambs shown for points was also the most ever. The Shropshire futurity program continues to be a bright spot for our Shropshire breed.

Matt Dirlam, a senior at Monrovia High School in Indiana, was chosen as the 29th recipient of the Loren D. Michel Memorial Award at the 2008 Indiana State Fair.This prestigious award has been presented annually since 1979 to the 4-H sheep showman who best exemplifies sportsmanship and outstanding mental attitude. 2009 NAILE Quiz Bowl Besides all of the junior sheep show opportunities that the young people enjoy, there are other areas where the youth can enjoy the ASRA. The Quiz Bowl in Louisville is one such event. This year seemed to be the largest attendance ever. Juniors and their families attended for some camaraderie and the ever important pizza. Several states were represented including Ohio, Tennessee, Oklahoma, Maryland, Kansas, Indiana, Arkansas and Virginia. Five teams of three members each participated in the question and answer rounds. The top three teams were recognized with cash awards. The winning team consisted of Kaitlin Whiting (Ohio), Ashley Fuss (Md.), and Matt Dirlam (Ind.). The second place team had members Logan Van Horn, Jansyn Van Horn and Monica Ebert (all from Kan.). Rounding out the top three were Tyler Bruhin and Morgan Chafin (Tenn.) and Ben Haderer (Va). Congratulations to these young people! Many thanks for spearheading the event go to Youth Committee supporters Tim Roberts and daughter, Rebecca Krinsky. Following the fun, Tim and Rebecca asked the young group what they wanted to see for youth activities. It may be a possibility in 2009 to hold this event away from the facility and have some additional fun bowling. The juniors thought this would be a good time. They were also quizzed about the types of awards that are offered at junior shows. All acknowledged that shiny trophies were an honor but preferred

more practical and usable items such as jackets, feeders and sheep blankets that could be used to promote one’s previous successes while at the shows. The group also discussed briefly about forming a Youth Advisory Group to the ASRA and the possibility of a Youth Ambassador Program. 16th Annual Scholarship

The American Shropshire Registry Association will award two scholarships to students planning to enroll in a post-secondary, under-graduate program during the 2009-2010 academic year. High school seniors or students currently enrolled in an undergraduate program will be eligible to apply. Selection criteria will include the applicant’s scholastic record, leadership, extra-curricular activities and involvement with the sheep industry, and in particular, the Shropshire breed. The Scholarships are being revised and forms will be available on the website and from the Shropshire office in mid February.

ASRA seeking a junior for the first ambassador Are you an enthusiastic junior member who is excited about the Shropshire breed? Do you have lots of leadership skills, love to speak to groups, like to travel, and have a passion to promote our breed? If so this is for you. The American Shropshire Registry Association is looking for its first ever Ambassador to promote and represent the breed at events throughout the United States. This is to be a one year term to begin at the Ohio Shropshire Classic Sale to be held in Ohio in May. The selection process will consist of an application and interview process. If there are meeting or banquets related with these events you will be asked to attend to speak about the Shropshire breed and special events that are taking place. You will also be required to take an active role in any fund-raisers that are being held for the association. From time-to-time the Board of Directors may also ask you to take part in one of their meetings to discuss future plans. After you have been selected, you will work directly with the head of the Youth Committee to make all of your plans and help you with whatever you may need. You will also be asked to submit an article or report to the Shropshire Voice for each publication. Who can apply? Any junior Shropshire member in good standing who is at least 15 years of age as of January 1, but not to exceed 20 as of January 1. Applications may be obtained from the registry office and are due back to the office by April 1, 2009 (postmarked by this date will be accepted). Finalists to be interviewed at the Shropshire Classic will be notified by April 15, 2009.

President, Mrs. Wilson make appearance with a Bryant Shropshire in Lead Class The North American Lead Classes enjoyed a special moment in the Costume Class. Brady Lingley and cousin Morgan Wildeman of Greenville, Ill, came dressed as President Woodrow Wilson and First Lady Edith Wilson. The pair celebrated the contribution of the lamb and wool industry to the Red Cross during World War I. In order to be historically correct, they borrowed a Shropshire ewe lamb from Bryant Shrops of Fredericktown, Ohio. Brady wore a wool suit and hat and Morgan had a woolen shawl. Their

narrative described Edith Wilsonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s venture. The following was taken from the book Edith and Woodrow by Phyllis Lee Levin. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Edith was also recognized, somewhat ludicrously, as a shepherdess, at least in a supervisory capacity, for another successful war effort introduced months earlier on April 30, 1917. Borrowing a flock of Shropshire black-faced sheep from the Bel Aire Farm in Maryland, she turned them out to pasture on the White House lawn, having a shelter built for them in the rear of the White

When Edith invited Colonel House to come to Washington, she spoke of giving him ‘a pastoral site of 14 sheep and four lambs – to graze on the lawn – and they are really awfully pretty.’ “The sheep remained on the grounds until the Wilsons moved out of the White House on the day of Warren Harding’s inauguration.” This delightful duo captured second place in the costume class. Judging by the number of people using their cameras during their tour around the show ring, they had a lot of fans. Congratulations to Brady and Morgan and Edith Wilson, too!

Spaghetti supper at Classic to aid All-American

The All-American will hold a new fund-raising event at the Ohio Sale weekend in May. A spaghetti supper will be held on Friday night, May 8, 2009 from 5-7 p.m. in the poultry building (right behind the big arena) on the Preble County Fairgrounds in Eaton, Ohio. Cost will be $10 for adults and $6 for children 12 and under. Dinner includes, spaghetti with meat sauce, bread sticks, salad, ice tea a/o lemonade and dessert cookie. All proceeds will go towards the All-American Junior Show. Door prizes will be donated by each breed association.

3rd Generation Shepherd Morgan is really excited about showing sheep and thankful for all of the help and support that she gets from Gramps and Nana Johnson of Marshfield, MO. She hopes to be around showing her Shrops in the future and is proud to be a small part of the American Shropshire Registry Association 125 year history. ~ In Memory ~ Horace Augustus “Gus” King Horace Augustus “Gus” King, 77, of Indianapolis, Ind. died Sept. 2, 2008. He was born May 12, 1931 in Shelby County to Vern and Dorothy Wilkins King, who preceded him in death. Gus was a graduate of Moral Township High School in 1949. Gus had been involved with Registered Shropshire Sheep since 1951 when he married Patricia J. (Cunningham) Kin. He was very involved in the family herd. Gus and Pat had five children who showed Shropshire Sheep at several county fairs along with showing at the Indiana State Fair. The children also participated at the North American Show. His grandchildren have been involved in showing

~ In Memory ~ Roger G. Snyder Roger G. Snyder, 68 of rural Monmouth, Ill. died at 7:49 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 4, 2008 at the Great River Medical center in Burlington, Iowa. Roger was born Aug. 12, 1940 in Quincy, Ill., the son of Arthur and Imo (Ryan) Snyder. He was raised and educated in New Windsor, graduating from Winola High School in 1958. He married Vicki Dellitt in Aledo Dec. 1968. He later married Claudia Laborde in Longview, Texas June 9, 1978 and she survives. Roger was a life-long livestock farmer, raising and showing Shropshire Sheep. He was a professional showman and a nationally recognized sheep judge. Roger competitively showed champions at several state fairs across the U.S. and major national sheep shows including the Chicago International, North American International Livestock Exposition in Louisville, Ky. and the Kansas City Royal. Even with all his professional accomplishments his main joy was spending time with his children and grandchildren. He also enjoyed playing golf. He was a member and served on the board of the National Shropshire Sheep Association, a member of the Illinois Land of Lincoln Breeders Association and he was a board member of the National Columbia Sheep Association. He was a sheep superintendent at the Hen-

ry County Fair, assisted in getting several sheep shows started across the nation, along with volunteering in judging and assisting kids at junior sheep shows. He served as a mentor and advisor on sheep issues throughout the United States. Surviving include his six Roger Snyder children, Kimberly (Kirk) Hare of Macomb, Kathleen (Chad) Eisele of Galesburg, Kristine (Jeff) Moffitt of Milan, Travis (Amy Taylor) Snyder of Monmouth, Diane Snyder of Monmouth and Cameron Snyder of Monmouth; eight grandchildren, Sydni Hare and Jordyn Hare of Macomb, Micayla Eisele, Jacob Eisele and Jackson Eisele of Galesburg, Seth Moffitt of Milan, Blake Smith and Trevor Snyder of Monmouth; two brothers, Melvin Snyder of Galesburg and Merle Snyder of Atlantic, Iowa; 1 sister, Idella Rose Anderson of Moline; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded by his parents and one granddaughter, Hope Moffitt. Funeral services were at Immaculate Conception Church, Monmouth. Burial was in Oak Lawn Cemetery, Galesburg. _______ Page 57
