From the President Jim Percival Xenia, Ohio I hope everyone is having a great beginning of the lambing season. The weather in Ohio has been cold but we have actually had a brief thaw in recent days so that has been a blessing and the ewes have enjoyed having the barn open. There has been significant discussion about the initiative to have DNA pulled on all service rams in the Shropshire breed. A committee is being appointed to best determine the appropriate role of the National Association and how to best implement a program. At this time, NOTHING has
been decided. The committee will discuss the issue and make a recommendation to the board. The Shropshire breed has been a leader in our industry and I believe we can continue to lead. Currently, we have tremendous enthusiasm in our breed. Last year was a record-breaking year in the youth programs, and we expect that again in 2015. The juniors will be contacting many of us in the near future for donations to support a stipend for the youth flock program. I would hope that each of you would donate if you are able. We look forward to seeing all of you in the spring at a sale, or this summer at a show. Happy Lambing!
National Sale stays in Eaton The Shropshire Classic Sale, part of the Big Ohio Weekend, will host the National Sale again this year May 7-9 at the Preble County Fairgrounds in Eaton. This serves as a venue for major sales for several breeds. Shropshires will show and sell fourth on Friday and Saturday. Steve Myers of Ohio will be doing the judging. Further details and entry information can be found at www. bannersheepmagazine.com. In keeping with an effort of the ASRA to promote Shropshire breed character the judge will pick a ram and a ewe he deems to have best breed character. These animals will then sell _________________________ Shropshire Voice February 2015
immediately after the champion and reserve champion ram and ewe. Their consignor’s will then receive a half-page full color ad in the Voice. R.J. Creamer of Prospect, Ohio will be coordinating the usual Shropshire details with the help of the Ohio Shropshire Association. The very popular sale preview will take place on Saturday, well in advance of sale time. A social is planned for the same time. One of the normal national sale events is bidding for a month’s advertising on the website www.shropshires.org. Breeders are encouraged to participate in this very visible advertising opportunity. _______ Page 5
From the Secretary By Becky Peterson Leyden, Mass. The year has come full cycle again and we begin again with 2015, which marks 131 years for the American Shropshire Registry and my eighth year as its secretary. We had a terrific fall season and time in Louisville. Thanksgiving Day met us with 12 inches of wet snow at home and a power outage. Then our snow left and we were back to mud for most of December. It finally turned cold again in early January but we haven’t had too many below zero nights that require two hats and an extra set of gloves tucked in the jacket. We have some snow but more ice, but thankfully, no more mud or mosquitoes. This, too, will be temporary and we’ll be complaining about those soon enough. We’ve seen a few changes along the way. Most have been positive and some repetitive so we see that it is very hard to reinvent the wheel. It’s important to remember what we are all here for and that is to promote the Shropshire sheep in all of its types and uses. I challenge breeders to keep an eye on their breed type and to strive for pedigree correctness. Certainly that is a very popular topic of conversation of late and it is very important to discuss it and pay attention to it. That being said, I acknowledge that I am very opinionated about such things but also understand that my position does not facilitate my climbing on a soapbox and ranting. I do, however, often brood and agonize over rumors and allegations. I take my position very seriously and at the end of the day, I know my work will be accurate. There have been some minor changes in the helm of the Shropshire leaders. Brad _______ Page 6
Slutz has passed the presidential torch on to Jim Percival of Xenia, Ohio. Norbert Jackson has stepped down from his directorship after serving many years for Indiana. He is replaced by Danny Rogers of Monrovia. Mike Elsbury of Greenfield, Ind. comes to the board as the state’s second director as per the Bylaw change of 2014. Sandy Cross of Maine has also stepped down from the New England/New York district. Mandy Swartz from New York will be filling Sandy’s shoes. We extend great appreciation to all past and new directors and officers of the association and wish them the best. Thank-yous are also in order to everyone who contributes to the various programs and activities that are organized by the Shropshire Registry. All sheep breed groups work hard for their junior members and this one is no exception. We have people who contribute to the awards for the All-American, nominate ewe lambs and yearling ewes for the Futurity programs, buy hats from the junior association, donate to the Scholarship Fund, provide lambs to youth projects and the Flock Starter project and help with many other endeavors. Some breeders actually contribute to all of these activities. It is an honor to participate this way so these programs will continue and each and every donation, whether it be monetary, time, sweat or sheep, is appreciated. Also our best get well wishes go to Karen Elsbury of Indiana and to Glenn High of Ohio after recent health challenges. We hope for uneventful recovery for them both. Meanwhile, everyone is busy in the lambing barn, sizing up this year’s models. Best of luck to everyone at this time. See you in the spring. _________________________ Shropshire Voice February 2015

A junior show has been added this year and will start one hour after the conclusion of the sale. Sale animals can be shown and their entry fee will be waived. Entry forms and other information will be available soon. The sale is being managed by the Indiana Shropshire Association. Contact Mike Elsbury at (317) 326-4461 or elsburyfamily@aol.com.

Order of events during the day is subject to change and office show order with additional activities will be released at a future date.
Spectacular The Spectacular Sale continues this year June 19 and 20 in Springfield, Ill. at the state fairgrounds. As usual the show will be held on Friday. Ohio’s Matt Martin will judge. The sale will start at approximately 10:30 on Saturday. Bill MacCauley will sell as before. The event will be held along with sales for Oxfords, Cheviots and Montadales so there is more opportunity transportation, etc. Jeff Ebert, Kansas Shropshire breeder and head of Associated Sheep Registries, will manage the sale as last year. Entries are due on April 10. Inquiries can be directed to Jeff, (785) 458-9174 or ebertj@wamego.net. Like the sale on Facebook (Illinois Shropshire Spectacular Sale).
Next deadline is here March 15
In order to get the May issue of the Voice out ahead of the Classic, which is the breeder’s request, Rinda needs everyone to cooperate with sticking to the March 15 deadline. It is a challenge for Rinda and Amanda to turn the May issue out on time if advertising and news doesn’t get turned in by the deadline. And they are also finishing up another breed’s magazine at the same time in mid-March so all of your cooperation is appreciated. Send your ads, photos and news items in today. Annual Meeting of the Members Minutes November 17, 2015 Louisville, Kentucky Newly-elected president, Jim Percival, called the 2015 Annual Meeting to order at 5:10 p.m. and introduced the members of the Board of Directors. Secretary’s report – Becky Peterson read the minutes of the 2013 Annual Meeting, held at Louisville. There were no additions or corrections. Tom Slutz moved to accept the minutes as read and R.J. Creamer seconded the motion. The report was accepted. Financial report – Becky Peterson had distributed a financial report as of Oct. 31, 2015. The Balance Sheet showed assets totaled $61,686.96 which was $5,134.86 over 2013. This was mostly due to the accounts receivable which included the advertising income for the last issue of the Voice, which had not been billed as of the same period of 2013. Similarly, the Accounts Payable was $4,871.00 more than 2013 as the cost of production of the Voice was also included. Becky then reviewed the Profit and Loss report as of Oct. 31 and compared it to the budget for the entire year. It showed a net income so far of $8,127.55 with two months left to go. She noted that only $312 showed for NAILE Matching Funds on the income side as that what had already been received. The actual amount that came in to present is $1,668.00. On another page, she noted that profit is down $3,017.08 from the same period of 2013 but that it is still showing a profit. She noted that November and December are expensive months and that the amount will be spent down but the year should still end in the black. Complete Fiscal 2014 report will be published in the next issue of the Voice. Becky reported on the office statistics. Registrations for the first 10 months of the year numbered 2199, down 5% from 2013. Transfers were down 18% to 945. _________________________ Shropshire Voice February 2015
Becky noted that there were two flocks in 2013 that transferred large numbers within family that didn’t happen in 2014 and that accounts for a large part of the decrease. Junior memberships were up 2.9% to 107. Returning adult members were down .7% to 149. Brand new adult members were down 7.7% to 24. R.J. Creamer moved to accept the treasurer’s report. Bill Bryant seconded the motion. There was no further discussion. The motion passed and the report was accepted. Youth Report – Alan Bruhin reported on the Junior Association and junior meeting which was held over the weekend. About 25 kids attended. Dr. Dwight Loveday spoke about lamb carcass grading and showed those present how to measure backfat and loin eyes and determine yield grade. The program was well received. The juniors also discussed changes to the Starter Flock Program. They had agreed to campaign for contributions for the 2015 Starter Flock fund which will be awarded to the winning candidate as a credit voucher to be used to purchase two or more ewes at 2015 sales. Report on Board of Director’s meeting– Jim Percival gave a brief rundown on the happenings of the board meeting earlier in the day. He was glad to say that the financial side of things is positive. He noted that the Voice is moving along well and is an excellent place to advertise Shropshires and read Shropshire news. Jim reported that 17 head sold in the Stars of Louisville Sale at an average or $794.18 and that the sale will be held next year if the show schedule permits. Becky noted here that 11 ewe lambs had been nominated at this sale for the 2015 Yearling Ewe Futurity. Jim thanked Cody Hiemke for his report on the Production Committee and encouraged members to participate in the NSIP program. Jim noted that there would be a NSIP seminar in Ohio in December during the Symposium. Futurity – Becky reported that $2580 had been amassed in Ewe Lamb Futurity Nominations and $760 in Yearling Ewe nominations. The contest wrapped up _______ Page 9
during the NAILE Junior Shropshire Show. The Yearling Ewe Futurity was won by Emily Petzel of Wisconsin on her Mrozinski ewe that she purchased at the 2013 Stars of Louisville Sale. The overall Ewe Lamb Contest was won by Kaylee Elsbury on her Dirlam ewe lamb that she purchased at the Indiana Premier Sale. Kaylee also won the West division of the regional contest. Jake Mingus of Ohio won the MidEast division on his Isler lamb purchased at the Spring Fling Online Sale. Taylor Harrison of New York won the East Division on her Washburn ewe lamb she purchased at the Spring Fling. Congratulations to those young people on their accomplishments. Becky noted that the Futurity nominations will change slightly in 2015 in that nominated ewes that are “bought back” by their consignors will now be assessed a nomination fee. No fee will be collected for sheep that do not receive any bids at sales. Jim Percival reported the board heard a presentation from the Heartland Group that will now manage the Midwest Stud Ram Sale. Rick Adams gave a short report on the newly forming National Sheep Association (NSA) which is a group to promote junior shows. He said the ASRA Board has elected to become a part of this group and appointed Rick and Alan Bruhin as Shropshire representatives on the NSA Board. R.J. Creamer reported that the National Sale will again be at the Ohio Classic in May. Steve Myers will judge. Shropshires will show and sell fourth.
There will be a Sale Preview and social hour. The sale will be webcast. Breeders will be required to consign two ewes for every ram. NAILE awards – Jim reported that the Verne Hoffman award will be continued by Matthew Anderson. The Gordon Anderson award is open to sponsorship. Jim reported on the board meeting lengthy discussion about the possible DNA testing of rams. It was decided that there would be a committee established to further investigate and inform the members of this project. He noted that feedback will be welcomed. Jim reported that Becky has agreed to remain as secretary and that her contract be renewed. Election of Directors – Becky reported on the Bylaw that states that regions that have active associations can nominate their own director to be approved at this meeting. Regions that do not have associations can have nominations from the floor during the annual meeting. Terms expiring this year are Pennsylvania and South Directors Alan Bruhin and Bob Dinsmore, Ohio Director Jim Percival, New England/New York Director Sandy Cross and Indiana Director Norm Jackson. Also, per the recent Bylaw amendment, Indiana receives a second director. The Ohio Shropshire Association nominated Jim Percival to another term. Bob Dinsmore moved to approve the nomination with a second from Rob Sando. No further nominations were received. The

Penn Mar Shropshire Association nominated Bob Dinsmore to another term. Rick Adams moved to approve that nomination and nominated Alan Bruhin to the other position with a second from Mark McCabe. No further nominations were received from the floor. Bob Dinsmore and Alan Bruhin were both approved for another term. The New England Shropshire Association noted that Sandy Cross has chosen not to serve again and nominated Mandy Swartz. Re Call moved to approve that nomination with a second from Tom Slutz. There were no further nominations. Mandy was approved. The Indiana Shropshire Association has nominated Danny Rogers to replace Norbert Jackson and also Mike Elsbury to fill the new position. Bill Bryant moved with a second from R.J. Creamer to approve those two nominations. There were no further nominations from the floor. All of the nominations were approved and the election of directors was complete. Old business – Randy Rife noted that there was not a second set of bleachers ringside for the Junior Show as NAILE had agreed to do. Becky said she would request again. Becky also reported that NAILE had agreed to split the January Ewe Lamb class at the junior show if it had more than 30 entries. ASRA had been previously supplying funds for the split February class. This has been a constant request for the Junior Shropshire Show. The scheduled advisory meeting had been postponed due to weather and Alan Bruhin attended the
meeting when it did happen. He was a friend of the sheep superintendent and was able to secure the second January class ($290 additional premiums, if needed). Thank you to Alan and Mike Hancock of NAILE for the funding. As it happened there were more than 30 lambs in the January class so it was split but there were only 24 lambs in the February class so it was not split. The junior show was very high quality with 150 sheep entered. New Business – Leon Hicks took the floor to express concern for the juniors over the possible DNA testing. Jim Percival reminded the members that nothing has been enacted and there was a committee set to get more information, establish policy and provide education. Becky finished a reminder that matching entry fees need to be paid before the open show can be conducted the next day. She also mentioned that the junior association still has hats to sell and they are available. There was no further business to come before the membership. Bill Bryant moved to adjourn the Annual Meeting. R.J. Creamer seconded. At this point, tickets were drawn for door prizes (bucket, feeder, 125th Anniversary items, NAILE award T-shirt, slicker brush). Winners were Jim Gruenhagen,Tay Woelber, Charlotte Stephenson, Don Knepp and Cody Hiemke. The meeting was adjourned at 6:10 p.m. Respectfully submitted, Becky Peterson, ASRA secretary

Letter … Jackson steps down as director Dear Readers, In November, Norm Jackson retired as the National Director representing Indiana. He had served for 24 years on the National Shropshire Association Board. Norm and his wife, Jan, have both been dynamic promoters of Shropshires as projects for youth. Through their own kids, grandkids and their own 4-H Club, which currently has over a hundred members, they have worked diligently with young folks and inspired them to excel with livestock projects and especially Shropshires. Jan has always been a managing partner in the operation: feeding and caring for animals, helping select their latest flock addition, baking cookies for that special event and above all, supporting young folks at home and at shows. Both Norm and Jan have spent a lifetime guiding, teaching and encouraging youth. I especially take my hat off and salute Norm for the time when he was our National President. After the trial “slick shearing year,” a second vote by the membership favored going “slick” by 76%. It was then time for the
Norm and Jan Jackson board to vote. The entire 15 member board was present and the vote was 7 to 7. It fell on President Norm to break the tie. He stated,“I represent the State of Indiana and our state has slick sheared for several years. Therefore I vote to slick.” Norm stood up and helped Shropshires as a breed move forward, upward and onward. Thank you, Norm! Randy Rife, Ohio Breed Historian

Dorper secretary Doug Gillespie worked from the sale block as usual and Steve Majchrzak and a young man named Clayton served as ringmen. Such a sale would not have been possible had it not been for the best set of sheep yet for this sale and the folks who came to bid on them. Dalton Hicks sold the Champion Ewe, a yearling to Brett, Kaitlyn and Tom Slack of Indiana for $2200. The Reserve Champion Ewe came out of the March class from Randy Rife. She sold to Tim and Sarah Fleener of Pennsylvania for $850. Randy Rife sold the second place yearling to Ohio’s CLC Club Lambs for $1300. The Majors’ flock sold the third yearling to Schoolhouse Shropshires of Ohio for $1000. Tim Roberts’ yearling was Florida-bound, selling to Connor Compton for $575. Crimson Ridge Shrops of Indiana chose Jim Brandt’s ewe for $600 and the Kaitly Slack holds Rife’s March ewe lamb. Birkhimer family of Ohio went home with the John Melvin yearling at $550. The six yearling ewes averaged $1037.50. There were five January lambs and they averaged $590. The class winner was a Joe Majors’ ewe who sold to Ryan Corder of Kentucky for $900. Jim Isler’s ewe lamb was second and brought $800 from Kennedy Algire of Ohio. Reese Johnston of Wisconsin chose a Brandt ewe for $450. from Ohio’s Brian Moeller. The Birkhimers found another Melvin ewe for $400. Erik Mrozinski sold the only February ewe lamb. She went to Rylie Miller of Indiana for $600. Four more March ewe lambs sold with the second place Rife ewe going to Ryan Corder for $1500. Dalton Hicks sold both of his March lambs to Noah Collins for $500 and $400. Randy Rife won the bid on the Bryant ewe lamb at $425. The five March ewe lambs averaged $735. The 17 head averaged $791.18. All 11 ewe lambs were nominated for the 2015 Yearling Ewe Futurity and seven of them were purchased by juniors and are eligible to compete in that contest. All yearling ewes were ultasounded for pregnancy on the morning of the sale. This was again a successful venue for the American Shropshire Registry Association. The official sale report can be read at www.shropshires.org. Shropshire breeders are encouraged to select early an elite ewe or two for this sale in 2015. The sale committee will

Board of Directors Meeting November 17, 2014, Louisville, Ky Present were President Brad Slutz, VicePresident Jim Percival, Bob Dinsmore, Jim Gruenhagen, Re Call, Cody Hiemke, R.J. Creamer, Rick Adams, Alan Bruhin, Tim Roberts and Becky Peterson as secretary. Directors not attending were Darrell Dockter, Norm Jackson, Bob Johnson and Sandy Cross. Also present was new incoming director from Indiana Danny Rogers.Visitors were Mark McCabe, Jim Isler and Bill Bryant. Secretary’s report – Becky had previously distributed the May 9 board minutes. Alan Bruhin moved, with a second from Jim Percival, to dispense with the reading of the minutes and accept them as distributed. The motion passed. Secretary’s report was accepted. Treasurer’s report – Becky had previously distributed the financial report for 2014 through Oct. 31. Becky presented the Balance Sheet as of Oct. 31 which showed an increase in assets of $5134.86 over the previous year, same period. This was partly due to the fact that the billed ad income of the Voice for the October Voice was included where it hadn’t been in 2013. Likewise, the account payables this year included the production cost of the Voice where it wasn’t included last year. The Profit & Loss Statement from January through October showed a profit of $8,127.55. The P&L showed an income entry of $312 for Louisville matching entry fees. These were the entry fees that exhibitors had paid on their own. The total income for the entry fees should be $1656 but entry report had not been received from NAILE so the actual entry fees had not been determined and billed. The other accounts in the P&L report were rather self-explanatory. Becky noted that November and December are very expensive months with the NAILE show and the profit figure is now less and will continue _______ Page 18
to drop but the year should still finish with a modest profit. The budget approved for 2014 had forecasted a loss of $509. Becky also presented the registry statistics for the year so far. Registrations were down by 5% to 2199, transfers were down 18% to 945. Part of the decrease had to do with a group of 2013 transfers from a junior member back to the farm membership. Junior members were up 2.9% to 107. Adult member renewals were down less than 1% to 149. New adult memberships were down 7.7% to 24. There was no further discussion. Jim Percival moved to accept the Treasurer’s report and Alan Bruhin seconded. The motion passed and the report was accepted. Committee reports Budget – Re Call had discussed budget with Jim Gruenhagen and Becky and proposes the board accept the 2014 budget for 2015 with a loss of $509. Becky had forecasted a total 2015 expense to be $52,939, approximately $1500 less than the 2014 budgeted expense. Discussion followed. Becky noted that she used the 2013 actual income to forecast the 2015 income. She also said that she was able to get home office insurance on her homeowner’s insurance which should reduce the expense of the rental of the postage meter lease $60 each year. She said she would bill the association for the approximate $20 cost of the policy. Becky noted that the regional youth support money could be as high as $2700 if each region uses its funds. There are two regions that usually do not spend their allotment so the cost will probably be less. Discussion followed. It was decided to table the decision on the proposed budget until later in the meeting to allow for the possible inclusion of other expense. Voice & Promotion - Becky reported for Rinda who had said that the Voice was continuing to do well and missed covering the expense of production for the year’s 3 issues with the advertising sales by only $494. She did say that the bulk of the ads _________________________ Shropshire Voice February 2015
for the recent October issue came in almost four weeks after the deadline which caused a delay in production. It is possible that the deadline may have to change to avoid that situation. Rinda had mentioned that the cost of the full color in the book hasn’t been a detriment if she is able to place the color on the appropriate pages. This also affects having centerfold full color as opposed to full color on opposing pages. Becky said that the Banner had sent a proof of the full page ad for the January issue. She questioned whether January was the right time to run it as Shropshires are featured in the April issue. Discussion followed. It was decided to keep the ad in January and include the 2015 Shropshire sale dates on the page. NAILE Sale – Stars of Louisville Sale succeeded once again on Nov. 15. Seventeen head sold and averaged $791.18. Sheep were sold to eight states and there were two new buyers. It appeared that the sale would profit by $834. Discussion followed. Becky noted that it was easier this year to assemble entries. Breeders really want to consign their very best sale animals. Rick Adams moved and RJ Creamer seconded to hold the sale again at NAILE in 2015 as long as the Open Shropshire Show is held in the first part of the sheep show week. Motion passed. Becky will notify the BOD if the show moves to the second part of the week. Production – Cody Hiemke reported that NSIP is still actively seeking Shropshire flocks for the record keeping. Sheep with production data have good value in commercial flocks. He also said that the sheep genome will be mapped in three years and this should help determine genetic markers for production traits. It will also be possible to test for Scrapie resistance, spider gene, OPP resistance, parentage, etc. in one test. Shropshires do not currently have enough participation in NSIP to qualify. The American Lamb Board reports that electronic grading will be available soon. Same will eventually be sold on grid pricing as opposed to weight. Flocks will be enrolled in NSIP and have _________________________ Shropshire Voice February 2015
EBV’s to participate. There will be a program at the upcoming Ohio Sheep Symposium regarding NSIP record keeping. Cody wanted to clarify that his intention is to encourage a place for Shropshires in the commercial sheep industry and that production is complimentary to the purebred division. Junior Association – Alan Bruhin reported that the meeting held two days earlier was well attended with about 25 kids. The juniors broke up into groups by their regions and elected their directors and officers. Jacob Wenner is now the President. Vice President is Ashley Fuss. Rylie Miller will serve as secretary. Brianna Brockmann is the Treasurer. There is about $1000 in the general account marked for the Junior Association. Dr. Dwight Loveday gave a very interesting and helpful presentation on carcass grading. He provided graphics and grids to measure rib eyes and backfat and help the kids determine yield grades. Thank you to Dwight and also to Alan for arranging the program and working with the juniors. They also discussed the Starter Flock program. Futurity – The Ewe Lamb Futurity and Yearling Ewe Futurity programs are now complete for this year. Kaylee Elsbury won the overall Ewe Lamb and the West/ Central division. Jake Mingus won the MidEast. Taylor Harrison won the East. Emily Petzel won the Yearling Ewe contest. Ewes were nominated from three online sales, Indiana Premier, Ohio Classic, Great Lakes, Spectacular and Midwest Sales. There was $2580 in the Ewe Lamb Fund and $760 was in the Yearling Fund. There had been previous discussion about how sales handled futurity nominations for “no-sale” sheep at sales. With Shrops, currently there is no nomination fee assessed for sheep that don’t sell. Other breeds collect the fee on all sheep nominated. Discussion followed. Rick Adams suggested assessing a nomination fee on all sheep that are nominated and receive bids at sales. Private Treaty sales of sheep sold subsequent to not selling at a sale will not be eligible. If a sheep is nominated and _______ Page 19
passes through the sale ring with no bid, no fee is assessed. Nomination fees can still be deducted from sale settlements by the management service. Discussion followed. Alan Bruhin moved, as above, adding that nominations are good for one sale only and do not extend to another sale. Motion was seconded by Jim Percival. Motion passed. It was noted that there is not much participation in the Yearling Ewe contest. Thirty-eight yearlings were eligible but only five submitted points. Since there were already 11 ewe lambs nominated at the Stars of Louisville Sale, the program will still be held in 2015. Fundraising – There was no active fundraising for general purposes in 2014. There was supposed to be a Silent Auction at NAILE to benefit the Scholarship Fund but there was very little participation. Becky had supplied a Wool Blanket and that was the only item on display. NAILE Premiums – NAILE had agreed to fund the added class for January Ewe Lambs in the junior show and ASRA would
s
be assessed for the added February class if either class had 30 head entered. There were 38 lambs entered in the January class so it was split. There were only 24 entered in the February class so that class was not split. There were no ribbons available for the added class. Shropshire Store – Jim Percival said the online store was ready to go and he just needs to get the website linked with the Shropshire site. He would contact Rinda about it. Starter Flock – Alan Bruhin reported that the Junior Association had decided to change the Starter Flock program to have it award a fund to purchase at least two sheep instead of seeking donations of live sheep. It will be less of a hardship on people to contribute money instead of a top quality sheep. The Junior Association would solicit members for contributions to fund the program each year and a voucher from the ASRA would be presented to sale management toward the purchase of the project animals. Alan would send out the original email to contact

members for donations and the juniors would follow up with a phone call. It is also likely that the Junior Association will do some specific fundraising for this purpose at events. Becky would establish an account within the General Fund for this purpose. Midwest Sale – Bret Oelke and Millie Moore were present to represent Heartland Livestock Services LLC that is the new management of the Midwest Sale, stepping in after Larry Mead’s retirement. Several changes will be made for 2015. They will be webcasting and archiving the shows for the breeds having national sales and will offer the service to the Shropshires at a cost of $500800. Shrops would need funds to have the show webcast. DV Auctions will webcast the sale. Breed shows would be held on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Supreme drive would be Wednesday. Sales would be held on Thursday, Friday and Saturday (no sales on Wed). It was suggested to separate the Shropshire breeding sheep show and sale from the wether sire portion and sell Shrops later on Friday in conjunction to the other slick shorn breeds prior to the wether sire kick-off. There will be some rearrangement of the penning at the sale. There will be an earlier entry deadline to ensure that the sale catalog comes out well in advance of the sale. It will be published on their website starting in May. Consignors are asked to cooperate with this earlier deadline. Millie requested the Shropshire mailing list and a list of “breeder names” to allow for proper transfer of sale sheep. HLS had provided the Board members with a survey to make the Shropshire requests. National Sheep Association – NSR is a group forming to promote slick shorn junior shows. It is headed by Stan Poe and is modeled after the National Swine Registry. Originally it was directed toward four breeds (Southdowns, Suffolks, Hampshires and Dorsets; Shropshires were not included) and the intent was to have a slick shorn breed registry but it has evolved to be a crossbred club lamb registry and junior show promotion organization. Each participating _________________________ Shropshire Voice February 2015
breed will have one or two directors appointed by their breed association. They are working toward putting on one major show in 2015 and then more in the following years. Wethers and club lambs will need to be registered so the ASRA will need to have the capability of registering wethers. The NSA is requesting funding from the ASRA of $2 per head registered (will amount to $4500). It was noted that the Southdown and Suffolk breeds have agreed to be part of the NSA. The Hampshires and the Dorsets are considering participation. Jim Percival moved to make an option for Shropshire breeders to include a voluntary $2 per head registered and submit to NSA whatever funds are collected. Discussion followed. Rick Adams suggested giving the NSA a vote of confidence saying that the ASRA would like to participate and the funding mechanism will be determined after the NSA is further along and confirms that the ASRA will have equal representation on the Board of Directors. Discussion followed. So moved by Rick, and seconded by Alan Bruhin, after Jim Percival withdrew his previous motion. There were seven votes in favor of Rick’s motion and two abstentions. Motion passed. Bob Dinsmore moved to appoint Rick and Alan to serve as Shropshire directors on the NSA Board. Motion was seconded by R.J. Creamer. Motion passed. It was suggested to put the proposal from the NSA on the Shropshire website. Discussion followed regarding the registration of wethers. Cody moved to include the scrapie tag number on the registration paper of wethers. Breed Integrity – Cody Hiemke reports of interest by several parties to enact a mechanism to curtail the use of outside genetics to make Shropshire pedigrees. Discussion followed. DNA testing of sires was discussed as a method to confirm parentage with various degrees of agreement. The method presented was to submit DNA of all rams to be used for breeding to a testing agency. Future male progeny would have DNA submitted and compared with _______ Page 21
_______ Page 22
_________________________ Shropshire Voice February 2015
their sires. The fee for the DNA recording is approximately $18. Opinions differed as to whether all rams to be registered must be tested or all rams to be used for breeding. There was concern that it may be cost prohibitive for youth and ram registration applications decline. Perhaps the chance that the earlier discussed possibility of one DNA submission and fee will suffice for all of the common tests, including parentage, would make it more acceptable. More discussion followed. Also addressed was the concern over liability. The securing of an attorney to advise the committee was also discussed. Cody suggested that the president appoint a committee to further investigate a method to collect and record DNA and to inform the members of the ASRA of its results before any program is instituted. Alan Bruhin suggested that the members be able to provide feedback. Cody would prepare a paper, subject to board approval, to be presented to the membership by a variety of methods. It was agreed that breeders, judges and exhibitors need to pay more attention to breed character. Perhaps judges need to be certified to evaluate Shropshires. It was noted that as in all breeds, there are different styles and body types and that breeders individually prefer a certain style of sheep. It is important to make sure that these different styles all look like Shropshires. A breed type conference and update of the Breed Standards could be done. 2015 National Sale – There were no new requests for sales. National Sale has been in Eaton, Ohio for the previous two years. R.J. Creamer reported that the Ohio Shropshire Association is willing to host the National Sale. The order of breeds will be Hampshire, Suffolks, Southdowns, Shropshires and possibly Dorsets so Shrops will show/sell second to last or last. The Shropshires will be judged by Steve Myers. This year, consignors are required to enter two ewes for every ram. This rule is across the entire sale event. The sale will be webcast and internet bidding will be available. Rick Adams moved with a _________________________ Shropshire Voice February 2015
second by Jim Gruenhagen for the ASRA to fund the Champion and Reserve Champion Ram and Ewe sashes for the Shropshire show at a cost of about $30 each. Brad Slutz will purchase. With the sale schedule, there will be time enough for the sale preview and social before the sale. NAILE awards – There are two privately sponsored awards given at the National Show at NAILE that are full. The Verne Hoffman award for the Pair of Yearling Ewes will be continued and provided by Matthew Anderson. The Gordon Anderson award for the Pair of Ewe lambs was full and lapsed for 2014. The board recommends that any class can be sponsored but the wording and presentation on the award be approved by the board. A notice will be posted in the Voice. Secretary’s contract – Becky was asked to evaluate her position and responded that for the most part, things were very positive and would like to continue. Referring to an earlier discussion, Jim Percival asked about liability insurance for the association. Becky was asked to obtain a quote for a “Directors and Officers Policy.” Becky was dismissed from the room during next discussion at which point it was decided to renew her contract for another year, providing a $500 raise as of Jan 1, 2015 and additional $500 after the 2013 financial audit is complete and the 2014 audit is started. Total annual salary to be $15,000. Becky noted that a contract had not been issued for a few years. One would be generated and sent to be signed by the president, vice president and secretary. At this point, the budget was revisited with the following changes: add $1000 for the secretary salary, add $400 for possible expense of the Breeder Integrity Committee. Election of Officers – Brad Slutz announced that he would like to step down as president after serving two years. Jim Gruenhagen nominated Jim Percival as president. R.J. Creamer seconded. Bob Dinsmore moved to close nominations and that the secretary cast one ballot for Jim Percival. Cody Hiemke seconded. Jim _______ Page 23
Percival accepted the nomination. Brad nominated Alan Bruhin to be vice-president and Bob Dinsmore seconded. Rick Adams moved that nominations be closed with a second from R.J. Creamer. Alan accepted. Rick Adams reported that he and R.J. worked from outside the NAILE Junior showring observing wool length on sheep as per earlier recommendations. He said that seven head had been sent back to have rear leg wool cleaned up. Those exhibitors were allowed to make the changes and get into the class. All incidences involved wool above the hock. There were no sheep presented with flank or belly wool. Issues where poor blending was done because of lack of experience were accepted but the exhibitors were counseled briefly. With no further business to come before the Board of Directors, R.J Creamer moved to adjourn and Brad Slutz seconded at 4:10 PM. Respectfully submitted, Becky Peterson

You and your family are free to come and go as necessary! New this year is a Jackpot Futurity show for Friday evening. A board of directors made up of junior exhibitors is responsible for the management of this event. The Shropshire representative is Dalton Hicks. Juniors learn to grade a carcass The youngsters of the Shropshire enthusiasts met during the NAILE event in November. They had a very nice turnout and enjoyed a presentation by Dr. Dwight Loveday from the University of TennesseeKnoxville. Dr. Loveday spoke to the group about carcass grading and its importance
to the sheep industry. Each person present received a packet of educational materials which included a rib eye grid and real size photos of rib #12 on two carcasses. The kids were shown how to use the grid to measure the area of the rib eye and depth of the backfat. Using those numbers, the kids were able to determine yield grade and %boneless retail cuts. Following the presenta-tion, the juniors enjoyed pizza and beverages and then broke into their Shropshire regional groups to elect their directors and officers. The final results are as follows: Ohio Director and president – Jacob Wenner; Pennsylvania and South Director and vice-resident – Ashley Fuss; Indiana Director and secretary – Rylie Miller; Illinois Director and treasurer – Brianna Brockmann; Southwest Director – Ty Ruckert. Dr. Dwight Lovesday discusses lamb carcass grading at There were no representatives the junior meeting.Ty Ruckert and his dad, study the rib present for the New England eye measurements. and New York region, the North Central region, the West Region or the Wisconsin/ Michigan region. They held a brief discussion regarding the Starter Flock Program where they discussed a mechanism to fund the monetary grant that will be awarded in 2015. Youth advisor and ASRA director Alan Bruhin will assist in making contact with breeders to gather donations. Questions regarding the junior association Lamb rib eye – Place the grid so that the 2 in block covers the or the Starter Flock can rib eye muscle of the 12th rib. Count the dots in the rib eye that be directed to Jacob are outside of the 2 in block. Add that to 40 and divide by 20 Wenner, Alan Bruhin or for the rib eye area. Do you get 2.55? Becky Peterson.

Shropshire Futurities for 2015 For the 40th year, The American Shropshire Registry Association will sponsor a Shropshire ewe lamb and yearling ewe futurity. The American Shropshire Association, in effort to get junior members more interested and involved, have again decided to have a Shropshire Ewe Lamb Futurity and Shropshire Yearling Ewe Futurity for 2015. The futurity will not only enhance the junior members ability to purchase extremely high quality breeding stock but will also make it more beneficial for the breeders to consign their very best animals. The rules of the futurity are relatively simple and are outlined below. You can buy a top quality ewe at one of the designated sales that has been nominated for the futurity, exhibit the ewe at the shows you normally attend and then send in your results on the point record form. A junior can add a top quality female to his or her flock, and possibly win back a sizable premium. The 2015 designated sales will include: Illinois Spectacular at Springfield, Indiana Premier Shropshire Sale at Greenfield, Shropshire Classic at Eaton, Ohio, Great Lakes Sale at Wooster, Ohio, the Midwest Stud Ram Sale at Sedalia, Mo. and Online Sales (if they meet the conditions listed in the sale nomination rules.) Sale Nomination Rules 1. Entries are open to all ewe lambs born September 1, 2014 thru March 31, 2015 and to all yearling ewes born September 1, 2013 thru May 31, 2014. 2. A nomination fee of $20 is required and payable to The American Shropshire Registry Association. Payment of nomination fees must also be made prior to the sale of the animal. Sale management may deduct nomination fee from sale settlements. Any animal not selling but receiving bids will be assessed the nomination fee. Animals that do not receive a bid (no-sale) will not pay the fee. 3. Each ewe must be properly identified, according to the registration certificate. _______ Page 46
Futurity ewes will be recorded by their scrapie tag number and paint branded with an F before entering the sale ring. The flock tag number will also be recorded for identifying purposes. 4. Each ewe must conform and abide by the rules and regulations of the individual sale to which it is consigned. All normal entry and commission fees will apply. 5. The American Shropshire Registry Association will not be responsible and shall be held harmless for any disputes and/or disagreements between buyers and sellers. 6. Sales that have five or more ewes nominated can qualify as futurity designated. 7. Ewes may be nominated from online sales (if they meet the following conditions): A) Sale Management Company agrees to all terms of the ASRA show/sale policy. B) The Sale Management Company is bonded. C) Sale Management Company collects the $20 nomination fee from consignor and pays those funds to the ASRA Office. D) The nomination of the animal is indicated for the entire time the sale listing is on the internet and identified by the scrapie tag number. E) The Sale Management Company sends to the ASRA office the printout of the sale with name and address of the purchaser for the entire sale and futurity nomination fees within 30 days. F) Only sales conducted by a management company qualify, if an individual breeder has an online sale, all futurity nominations and sales must be handled by the sale management company. G) All registered Shropshires in an online sale must be nominated if any are nominated. H) Sale management will notify the ASRA office of intent to hold an online sale at least 48 hours before the sale and a list of nominated lambs must be available before the sale starts. _________________________ Shropshire Voice February 2015

2014 Scholarship recipients
Three scholarship applications were received in 2014 and they all showed numerous academic, community, leadership and Shropshire accomplishments. Two equal scholarships of $400 are being awarded to Brianna Brockmann and Taylor High. In the October issue you were introduced to Brianna. Here, you will meet Taylor.
Taylor High The second winner is Taylor High of McDermott, Ohio. She is the daughter of David and Jodi High and graduated last May from Valley High School with a GPA of 3.987, ranking fourth out 86 in her class. Taylor received the Wendy’s High School Heisman Award and the Army Scholar Athlete Award. She was a member of the Men’s Golf Team for four years, playing head to head against the men and served as captain for three years. She played varsity basketball for four years and served as captain for two. Taylor was also a member of the National Honor Society and participant in the Buckeye Girls State. Taylor is enrolled as a freshman at The Ohio State University and is studying Biological Sciences. Here is a portion of her essay: “I have been surrounded by the sheep industry my entire life. From going to visit my Grandpa and Grandma High on their farm as a young child, until my family began High Life Farm with the purchase of 10 bred Shropshire ewes from Cessna Farms back in the fall of 1998. Our flock is presently at 30 Shropshire brood ewes and a group of ewe and ram lambs that will grow out to be yearlings or sold as seed stock to other registered Shropshire flocks or commercial producers. Having Shropshire sheep on the farm has given me the opportunity to participate at a number of levels of show ring competitions over the years. The important things that I have learned from raising and showing Shropshires is that the trophies are fun to win the day of the show, however a lot of hard work goes into _________________________ Shropshire Voice February 2015
Taylor High getting the animal prepared for competitions. After selection there is training the animal, nutrition, and putting the final touches on just days and minutes before the event. I have been fortunate through the years to have excellent animals to choose from and the support of my family as I learned to show and prepare sheep for show. I have participated at the Ohio State Fair for the last eight years in the junior show and have assisted our family flock helping to present our sheep in the Ohio State Fair open show. I have won premiere exhibitor at the Ohio State Fair four times, along with Supreme Champion ram and Supreme Champion ewe at two of the state fair shows. I have participated at the state fair in showmanship and have won my division two times over the years. One of the highlights of my sheep showing career was exhibiting the Grand Champion Market Lamb in 2007 at the Scioto County Fair with a lamb whose sire and dam were registered Shropshires. I have also been blessed with honors of best born and raised in the county two other times. At the county level I have had several champion breeding sheep with my Shropshires. I have also earned outstanding sheep exhibitor on five occasions, which is a combination of _______ Page 49

showmanship, placing in class and skill-a-thon score. Also at the county level I have won my showmanship class every year except one when my older brother edged me out his final year. I have participated with Shropshires at the All-American Junior Show and also at the North American Livestock Exposition. Raising and showing Shropshire sheep has taught me lessons far beyond what is needed to win a trophy. It taught me that the harder I work the better chance I have to succeed. I carried that discipline over to the athletics I participated in from cross country, track, golf, basketball, and tennis. Furthermore, that hard work and dedication has carried over to my scholastic achievements. Raising sheep has also taught me how to work to reach my goals, as I was salutatorian at Lucasville Valley High School in the class of 2014. I was also one of four students in my school with perfect attendance all four years of high school. I feel that combining these traits with the hard work and dedication I have gained by raising and showing sheep will help me be successful as I begin the next

segment of my life pursuing a degree in biology from the Ohio State University and hopefully entering veterinary school after earning my bachelor’s degree. My responsibilities on the farm vary from season to season. I help in the lambing barn in the winter when needed, I help tag, dock and castrate lambs. I help with feeding year round when I am available. In the summer I help with feeding the lambs for show along with halter breaking and working with the show flock so they are easier to handle in the show ring on show day. Before forming our family flock back in 1998, my parents pondered what breed would work best for a small operation that would give my brother and I opportunities to learn the responsibilities of farm life and raising livestock. I am thankful that they made the decision to start with Shropshires as I have had many opportunities through the years to show and be successful, not only with our breeding stock, but also to raise show quality market lambs from the same flock that have been very successful, as well. Having Shropshires has made a big difference in my perception of the sheep world and the wonderful people in it. It is not the sheep that make the shows fun, but the people you meet and the friends you make along the way.” Congratulations to both of these young Shropshire enthusiasts. The ASRA is very proud of the young people and look forward to supporting their youth activities.
2015 Scholarships Two $400 awards will be available in 2015. Students are encouraged to apply for these scholarships as long as they are currently enrolled in an under-graduate program and directly involved with Shropshire sheep. Applications are available at www.shropshires. org and are due June 1, 2015 in the office of the ASRA. Only complete applications which will include official transcripts of all high school and college work completed along with two letters of recommendation will be considered. _______ Page 51
4-H projects and Shropshires
My name is Emily Anderson. I am 11 years old and am homeschooled in sixth grade. This will be my fourth year in the Macon Easy Riders 4-H Club. My projects last year were sheep, dogs, crochet, knitting, woodworking, and outdoor adventures. The sheep are a big part of my life. My family has raised Shropshires for over 25 years and I started a flock of Natural Colored wool sheep three years ago. My favorite sheep to show this year was my Natural Colored ewe lamb, “Lula,” whose mother was a Shropshire! I worked very hard with her for Showmanship and used her for Lead Line, as well. We went to 18 shows last summer in five States. I like going to the All-American Junior Sheep Show which is held in different places each year. Last summer it was in Hutchinson, Kansas and we got to tour the salt museum that was 650 feet below ground! We ended the summer with the Wisconsin Sheep and Wool Festival in Jefferson, Wis. where I won the sweepstakes for my age division for the second year in a row. For me the sheep aren’t just a 4-H project, they’re part of my life all year. I enjoy learning about the pedigrees, how to choose which rams to breed to which ewes, and being there when the lambs are born. It’s a lot of fun to watch the lambs grow and be able to show the sheep that I bred. I’ve learned to set goals through 4-H. Some goals I had last year was to get a showmanship plaque at Missouri State Fair again, do well in Lead Line and get better at trimming sheep. I am proud that I accomplished each of these goals! I am excited for another year of 4-H. This year I want to take sheep, dogs, chickens, sewing and crochet. My name is Andrew Anderson. I’m nine years old and am home-schooled in the third grade. This is my second year in the Macon Easy Riders 4-H Club. My projects last year were robotics, woodworking, sheep, and outdoor adventure. My favorite project was robotics. I learned something new at every meeting I went to. For the fair, I chose to make a robotic arm that came in a kit. It was a lot of fun but I had to pay close attention to each step to make sure it would work. I was excited to finally put the batteries in it and find that it actually worked! I took a market lamb to the county fair this year. She was our bottle lamb, “Roxy,” so I was glad we didn’t have to butcher her. I also helped my sister, Emily, show breeding sheep all summer. I think I’ll enjoy showing sheep more when I get a little bigger. My favorite part of 4-H is all the friends I make! Andrew took his lamb to the local Emily and Andrew are the children of Matthew and nursing home for the residents to hold. Christie Anderson of Macon, Mo.

2015 Starter Flock program The Flock Starter Program is a project undertaken by the National Junior Shropshire Sheep Association to award a group of Shropshire ewes to a deserving youngster new to the breed. After a very successful inaugural year with 14 applicants, the program continues in 2015. Applicants are required to submit an essay to the Shropshire office that should include background information about yourself and your interest in sheep. This document should illustrate your goals and intentions with the animals should you win the award. There should also be a budget included with the paperwork submitted. You are asked to type your essay and submit it by April 1. Please include your mailing address and telephone number. All applicants should be between the ages of 8 and 20 years old. The winner of the award will be notified and will receive a credit voucher from the ASRA to purchase two or more Shropshire ewes of his or her choice at any of the Shropshire
sales in 2015. Application information will be available on www.shropshires.org and from the Shropshire office. In 2014, three ewes were donated by Mark McCabe, Glenn and David High and Randy and Julie Rife. They were awarded at the Classic Sale in May to the winner, Noah Collins of Tennessee, who kept his end of the bargain and took good care of them and exhibited them at his local and regional shows, as well as NAILE. To ensure the success of this program, financial contributions are needed. Shropshire breeders should consider it to be an honor to support such a program so you are encouraged to join Mark, Glenn, Dave and Randy and contribute what you can to this worthwhile cause. Contact secretary Becky Peterson, Youth Coordinator Alan Bruhin, wabruhin@utk.edu or NJSSA President Jacob Wenner at jnwenner@gmail.com with your support or inquiries.

Consistency Makes All The Difference” We have strived over the past 16 years in the business of keeping our registered Shropshires consistent in their style, balance, muscling, and eye appeal. This has been done, not by chasing the show ring, but by raising the sheep that can be productive in the United States sheep market system and then compete in the show ring. Our belief is that baby steps towards a type of sheep will pay far more dividends towards that consistency than the common “mix and match” mating systems many people try., i.e. big “frame” ewe on “weather” type ram.
CHATTAHOOCHEE, HIGH LIFE FARM 1404
Thank you to Art Brown for his purchase of the high selling January ram lamb at the 2014 Ohio Classic Sale.

After 65 years, we have reduced our flock numbers‌ But we are still in business‌give us a call!!! Due to health concerns we felt we would be unable to lamb out the 31 registered Shropshire ewes we exposed last fall, therefore, we reduced our flock significantly.
We want to thank
