Annual Meeting of the Members Nov. 19, 2019 • Louisville, Ky.
President Jim Percival called the meeting to order at 1 p.m. Attendance was small with 11 present due to the schedule change because of meeting room availability. Secretary Becky Peterson distributed to all present the minutes of the last Annual Meeting in 2018. Tom Slutz moved to accept the minutes as presented. Rob Sando seconded. Motion passed. Report accepted. The Treasurer’s Report was also provided and Becky went through all of the line items. Report showed total assets as of 10/31/19 to be $59,943.21 and a Net Income of $3540.21. Office statistics showed 2159 registrations, 1212 transfers, 146 Junior memberships, 152 adult membership and 17 new memberships. Brad Slutz moved to accept Financial Report with a second from Tom Slutz. Motion passed. Becky Peterson presented the report on the 2019 Futurity. There were 48 yearling ewes and 121 ewe lambs nominated from 10
sales and 2018 ewe lamb renominations for a total of 169 head. Of those 95 head were purchased by juniors and points were tracked on 35 head. The yearling ewe division was won by Emily Stevens on a Rife ewe she purchased in 2018 and renominated. Emily also won the Midwest and Overall Ewe Lamb on a Fritz ewe she purchased at the Ohio Sale in May. The west ewe lamb division was won by Drake Slutz on a Fleener ewe lamb purchased in an online sale. Addisen Nicholson topped the east ewe lamb with a City Limits ewe purchased in Ohio. Placings will be finalized and checks will be paid out in early December. 2019 Board Meeting Highlights Jim Percival reported on the Stars of Louisville Sale held three days earlier.Ten head went through over the sale block for an average of $685, the seven that sold averaged $978.With that and only 12 head consigned, the board has voted not to hold a sale in 2020. Rick Adams had reported that sales of rams with NSIP data are selling well into commer-

cial flocks. The Starter Flock program will occur again in 2020 with a deadline of March 15th and a stipend $1250. Of course, sponsors are always welcomed. RJ Creamer is the Shropshire representative to the Ohio Sale committee and reported that the sale will now be managed by Select Livestock Services (Gary Saylor) and take place in Greenville, Ohio on the same usual weekend in May. The Breed Character education event went very well and plans are underway for it to be held again in Greenville. Transfer fee changes will take effect on Jan. 1, 2020. Regular transfers $10; return family transfers $5; after six months after sale date $15; after 12 months $20. President Jim Percival appointed a committee (Tom Slutz, Jim Gruenhagen, Rick Adams, Tim Barnes and Cody Hiemke) to investigate DNA testing of rams and to propose a plan to implement it. The ASRA Bylaws require a review of the districts in 2020, and if needed, redistricting will take place according to the Bylaw amendment procedure.
Election of Directors Three regions had expiring directors’ terms. Per the Bylaws, any region having an association can nominate the director from that region. Any region not having an association can accept nominations from membership at the Annual Meeting. That being said, Tom Slutz was nominated by the Illinois Shropshire Association to represent that district again. Darrell Dockter has been nominated by the North West Shropshire Association to represent the West District. The Michigan/ Wisconsin district had no group. Emily Petzel does not wish to serve again.Tom Slutz nominated Debbie Petzel. Charlotte Stephenson nominated herself. A vote was taken by paper ballot and showed six votes for Debbie Petzel, 1 vote for Charlotte Stephenson. Debbie will represent the MI/WI district for three years. Jim asked for participation from the membership on any of the several committees serving the ASRA. Rob Sando moved to adjourn the Annual Meeting at 1:52 pm. Tom Slutz seconded. Meeting adjourned.

the entire year of 2019. Also discussed were the special accounts for activities and the regional support, as well office stats for first 10 months. Becky also provided the directors with the checkbook and credit card ledgers. RJ Creamer moved to accept the report with a second from Mary Anne Keck. Report approved. Committee Reports: Voice & Promotion – Becky reported Rinda had expressed displeasure regarding the board’s decision in May to change the deadline for the October Voice without talking with her. Ultimately it all worked out though there was some content that had to be left out due to the earlier print date. The book was mailed on October 6, including the NAILE Sale catalog. Mary Anne Keck and Rick Adams asked to pass the apologies of the board on to Rinda. Mike Elsbury expressed his displeasure about content of the ad on the Back cover of the October Voice. It was suggested that Becky and Rinda be able to screen negative material. Stars of Louisville Sale – 12 head were consigned, two were scratched, seven sold for an average of $978. High seller was $2000.Anticipate an income of $76 after expenses are paid. It seems to still be hard to get the elite sheep consigned to get the buyers and prices needed. In spite of wide catalog distribution, social media, a Banner ad, sale entry photos, buyer participation was low. Discussion followed regarding skipping a couple of years and coming back during some commemorative year. So moved by Rick Adams and seconded by Adam Moore. Motion passed. Production – Rick Adams is still encouraging breeders to get involved with NSIP record keeping. Breed Character – The event in Eaton last May had about 30 kids and 70 adults participate. Four $100 sale credits were used. The event had good reviews and several participants offered comments as part of the survey. RJ and Rick are planning another event for the sale in Greenville. Possibility of using lambs or rams for the classes. There has also been work done on an educational Breed Standards flyer that has met __________________ Shropshire Voice
delays. Every effort will be made to get it finished up so it will be available for the above event and also to be mailed to every member with their returned work. Mary Anne Keck to check with Debbie Petzel. Futurity – the program wrapped up at the NAILE Junior Show with the winners as follows: Emily Stevens won the yearling ewe division with a Rife ewe. She also won the Midwest and Overall Ewe Lamb with a Fritz ewe; Addisen Nicholson won the East Region with a City Limits ewe and Drake Slutz won the West Region with a Fleener ewe. Thanks expressed to RJ, Mark McCabe and Danny Rogers for keeping track of the futurity ewes in the ring. Forty-eight yearling ewes were nominated, 30 purchased by juniors and 10 ewes were tracked. One hundred twenty-one ewe lambs were nominated, 65 purchased by juniors and 25 were tracked. Junior Activities – Rylie reported that there were 44 youngsters present at the junior association meeting on the previous day. There was a mixer event and a brief skillathon with prizes given, similar to previous years. The kids seemed to be pretty engaged and glad to be there. Rylie purchased gifts for the AAJS kids and performed a lunch at the AAJS. Gifts for each NAILE junior show exhibitor were purchased, as well. The new president of the junior association is Taylor Young and the vice president is Jaedyn Slutz. Rylie will network with the junior officers to keep things moving. All-American Junior Show – 2020 Show will be back in Michigan where it has drawn a good Midwest contingent of Shropshire kids. Illinois will host 2021 at the State Fairgrounds, 2022 will be in Massachusetts at the Big E.The show has an expense budget in excess of $100,000 and as larger facilities are needed, the rental gets higher. Management has decided to continue the Online Semen Auction to raise general funds for the show. Becky is coordinating that event and would appreciate the participation of Shropshire breeders. Shropshire Starter Flock – The program is the product of the junior association which has been responsible for raising the funds for the award which has been short of the ex__________________ February 2020
pense for the last two years and now is at a negative $556. Discussion followed about the amount of the winner’s stipend. Mary Anne Keck moved to award $1250 in 2020 and review the amount annually based on the funds available. Adam Moore seconded. Motion passed. The application will be promoted on the website and in the Banner, as well as the extension service. The deadline is March 15 and the winner will be determined as soon as possible to allow use of the award at the early online sales. Paul Young wanted to discuss a Showdown Showmanship program run for the Southdown Juniors as an opportunity for Shropshire kids. It would be similar to a futurity that kids could turn in placings to gain points in showmanship contests over the show season. Awards are made for age divisions. Discussion followed regarding funding and record keeping.Tom Slutz moved to table and watch for a year and see how the Southdown breed does with it. It was noted that it is important to have activities that encourage kids to show Shrops. Old Business– Shropshire Store – plans fell through in July to have Shrop T-shirts for the AAJS kids. Mary Anne Keck will submit a design to use and Becky and Re will work with their local printer. Board Member Responsibilities and Conflict of Interest Forms - Jim Gruenhagen distributed forms for the members to sign for Becky to keep on file. Becky will provide them for the members not present. It was noted that there is now a Directors and Officers Insurance policy in effect as of 10/25/19. The carrier is Renaissance Alliance and the policy cost is $1801. Belly & Leg Wool Rules – Showring problems seem to be decreasing. It is easy for ringside inspectors to see front and rear leg wool. Flank wool is a bit harder to see from up high and is easier to see in the ring on a side profile.A couple of exhibitors at the AAJS were asked to make changes in the future. The NAILE Junior Show was observed by the Futurity checkers. _______ Page 11

draw order. There are no accommodations for haul sheep. Management will collect futurity nomination fees only if all ewes are nominated. Judges have not been confirmed. Meeting rooms will not be provided. It is not known if there is time or room for the Ewe Preview. Jim Gruenhagen will order the Champion and Reserve Champion banners. Mike Elsbury reported that the Indiana Shropshire Association would like to offer to host National Sale in Greenfield, Ind. in 2021. Fee Review – Becky had been asked last May to look at the registration/transfer fees. Within the original stats reported there were 113 sheep registered after one year of age, 31 transfers six months past sale date, 26 transfers 12 months after sale date. Discussion followed. Mary Anne Keck moved to charge $16 for transfers after six months, $26 for after 12 months. More discussion. Motion withdrawn. It was noted that there are now many transfers within family for show purposes and Becky allows a half price $3 transfer when the junior sheep are transferred back all at
once.An increased fees for the older transfers would encourage the timely submission of paperwork on sold sheep. Discussion followed. Rick Adams suggested charging $10 for regular transfers, $15 for over six months, and $20 for transfers after 12 months. Return transfers within immediate family (same as the futurity) will be $5. Registration fees will not change. More discussion followed. So moved by Rick Adams and seconded by Jim Gruenhagen. Motion passed with opposition from Mary Anne Keck on the definition of family. These are the Flocks We Advertise For There are Shropshire Flocks receiving The Voice that don’t raise their sheep with the show ring in mind. They do so because they appreciate the productive nature of their sheep and for their unique fit within their farming systems. semen sales and flushes. Discussion followed. Becky will work up forms to have on the website for breeders to declare number of units of semen sold and/or inseminated and also for to declare number of embryos flushed and either transferred or frozen. DNA Testing – Jim Percival reported on an opportunity for DNA testing of rams. Several years ago there was an attempt to make a Shropshire DNA testing plan that was costprohibitive and the idea failed. There is now a 50 chip test that will cost $30 and will still do all of the regular Spider, Scrapie Resistance, OPP, etc. testing, as well as parentage. Jim appointed a committee of Rick Adams, Tom Slutz, Jim Gruenhagen, Cody Hiemke and Tim Barnes to meet and come up with a plan by March to invoke such a program. Discussion followed. Committee to follow up. Committees for 2020 – a list of committee members was distributed. Jim asked anyone wanting to serve on a particular committee or change committee should let him know. event sale, the Breeders Cup, run by Willoughby Sales to be held June 10-14 at the Indiana State Fairgrounds. Sale management will have to request will have to request recognition as a Futurity Sale. Becky stated that according to the Bylaws, redistricting will have to take place in 2020. A change in the districts would be an amendment to the Bylaws. So after a review of the districts by the board, any change needed would have to follow Bylaw Amendment procedure. Election of Officers – Jim asked for nominations for president. Jim Gruenhagen nominated Jim Percival. Rick Adams nominated RJ Creamer. Tom Slutz moved nominations be closed. Danny Rogers seconded. Becky distributed cards for a paper ballot. Rylie Miller counted. Result: Jim Percival seven votes, RJ Creamer four votes. Jim called for nominations for vice president. Jim Gruenhagen nominated RJ Creamer. Rick Adams moved to close, seconded by Adam Moore. Directors’ terms expiring were Tom Slutz (renominated by IL Assoc.), Darrell Dockter (renominated by North West Assoc.) and Emily Petzel. Emily will not run again but had stated that her mother, Debbie, would run if nominated at the Annual Meeting on Tuesday. Secretary’s review – Becky was excused. During Executive Session, it was decided to retain her for another year at same salary. Upon the filing of the 2019 Form 990 with the IRS and the completion of the 2019 compilation with the accountant, she would be given a one-time $500 bonus. Discussion returned to futurity nominations at the Ohio Sale. Caleb Fritz moved to require all females in the sale be nominated to the futurity and that sale management deduct the fees from the consignor settlements and remit to the ASRA. Tom Slutz seconded. Motion passed with one vote against. No date was set for the winter teleconference. Jim Gruenhagen moved to adjourn with a second from RJ Creamer. Meeting adjourned at 5:36 p.m. Respectfully submitted, Becky Peterson, ASRA secretary _______ Page 15

Glenn A. High Glenn A. High, 82, of Lexington, Ohio died unexpectedly on Sept. 21, 2019, from injuries sustained from a fall at home. On Christmas Day in 1936, Glenn was born in Paulding County, Ohio, the third of six children of the late Dorris J. and Erma Mae (Van Buskirk) High. He graduated from Mount Gilead High School in the class of 1954. Shortly following graduation, Glenn enlisted in the US Army during peace time from 1955 to 1957 and was stationed in Anchorage, Alaska for 18 months. Upon his honorable discharge, Glenn returned home where he finally got to meet his “pen pal,” Kathryn “Joan” Tobin, who had been sending him letters every month while he was in the military. From there, the rest is history, as they were married on May 3, 1959, at the Chesterville Methodist Church. During their 60 years of marriage, they were a team with everything they did and were always by each other’s side. Together they lovingly raised four children, Pamela, Roger, David, and Wanda. Glenn worked in shipping at General Motors 35 years. His work at GM helped he and Joan fund their true passion of farming, buying their family farm in 1961, just before their daughter, Pamela, was born. Their 133 acre farm centered primarily around raising various breeds of sheep, including Shropshire,Targhee, and Hampshire sheep. Glenn’s love for raising sheep started in 1951, when he began showing sheep in FFA in`the ninth grade. They traveled much of the US showing and selling purebred sheep. They also exhibited their prize winning sheep at many county fairs and at the Ohio State Fair for 52 consecutive years. In 2003, Glenn was honored to be included in the Ohio State Fair Agricultural Hall of Fame. Previous honors included being inducted into the Targhee Hall of Fame, and being named an Ohio Master Shepherd, the Charles B. Boyles award. He was both a board member and past president for the American Shropshire Registry Association, and the US Targhee Sheep As-

sociation. He served as a 4-H advisor for 20 years and was proud to serve as the Morrow County Fair Grand Marshall. He also was a member of the Ohio Sheep Improvement Association, Ohio Farm Glenn High Bureau, and Morrow Co. Sheep Improvement Association. Very faithful, Glenn was an active member of the Steam Corners United Methodist Church. He also was a member of the Ohio Eastern Star, Chester Masonic Lodge #238, and he had served as a Troy Township Trustee for 28 years.Always hard at work, Glenn often worked from sun up until sun down tending to his farm and sheep. Most important of all to Glenn, though, was his family with all they’ve accomplished being his proudest achievement. He was a huge Ohio State Buckeye fan, all of his children’s Alma mater. An honest man, Glenn gave everything he had to whatever he was working on. He also was very competitive, always knowing what he wanted and going after it. Left to cherish his memory are his beloved wife, Joan of Lexington; three children: Roger (Holly) High of Richwood, David (Jodi) High of McDermott, and Wanda (David) Berk of Upper Arlington; five grandchildren: Adam High, Trevor (Marybeth) High, Taylor “Darby” High, and Rachel and Rebecca Berk; four siblings: Deloris (Dean) Sherman, Ruth (Wayne) Miller, Dwight (Gloria) High and Keith (Micki) High; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, daughter, Pamela Sue High in 2007; a brother, Marvin; and a sister-in-law, Janet High. Services honoring his life were held with Masonic and Eastern Star services. Burial was held with military honors. Memorial contributions may be made to the Ohio Farm Bureau Foundation, c/o High Family Memorial Scholarship, PO Box 182383, Columbus, OH 43218. Apply for 2020 Shropshire Starter Flock program by March 15 The Flock Starter Program is a project undertaken by the National Junior Shropshire Sheep Association to award a group of Shropshire ewes to a deserving youngster new to the breed. After six successful years with 50 applicants, the program continues in 2020. To apply, you are required to complete an application and submit an essay to the Shropshire office that should include background information about yourself and your interest in sheep. This document should illustrate your goals and intentions with the animals should you win the award. There should also be a budget and one or more letters of recommendation included in the paperwork that is sent in. We ask that you type your essay and submit it by March 15. Please include your mailing address and telephone number. All applicants should be between the ages of 8 and 20. The winner of the award will be notified and will receive a $1250 credit voucher from the ASRA to purchase two or more Shropshire ewes of his or her choice at any of the Shropshire sales in 2020. Application information will be available on www.shropshires.org and from the Shropshire office. To ensure the success of this program, financial contributions are needed for this
worthwhile cause. Contact Secretary Becky Peterson with your support or inquiries. In 2019, the following donors were added to the ranks of Flock Starters: Sugar Ridge Ranch, Tim Elsbury, Sand Meadow Farm (Nicholson Family), Creamer Shrops, Tim & Debbie Barnes, Bill Bryant, Wolford Shrops, Dave Evans and Dennis & Carol Lingley. Junior Shrop Association News By Rylie Miller Junior Coordinator I hope everyone had a healthy and successful lambing season. As many of you know show and sale season is quickly approaching. Make sure you renominate futurity lambs for the yearling program, if your junior is interested! Additionally, be on the lookout for the Start-a-Flock application and national royalty program applications for some great junior opportunities. The junior board that was voted on at the NAILE is very eager to have a successful year, and a lot of great ideas have already been shared. Be on the lookout for more details in the coming months. However, get excited for some upcoming fundraisers to benefit the junior association and more fun activities for the whole family to get involved. Congratulations to Taylor Young the new president, Jaedyn Slutz the vice president, Vivian Stephenson the secretary and Taylor Kemp the treasurer! I am very excited for the new year, and as always feel free to call or text me with any questions or concerns at (765)421-8466.

2020 All American Junior Show Heading Back To A Favorite Show Site In Michigan By Deb Hopkins The 2020 All-American Junior Sheep Show is going to be held at the Michigan State Livestock Pavilion, East Lansing, Mich. from July 2-5. The Michigan Planning Committee is working hard to make it another excellent showing experience for all of the exhibitors and their families. The show will feature classes for 26 breeds and is in the second year for the expanded show schedule in which major activities are done on Thursday. It worked out great in Kansas and allowed time to add the popular Leadline and Dress-A-Sheep competitions. Breed judges are Skip Anderson, Neal Knapp and John Mrozinski. Shropshires will be shown on Sunday, July 5, judged by Neal Knapp. The Shropshire exhibitors also have a lunch social get together hosted by the National Junior Shropshire Association on Saturday, July 4, at noon. Show information can be found at www.allamericanjuniorshow.com. If you have never attended an All-American Junior Show please make plans to attend this very special event! It is much more than just a sheep show as there are several activities for the whole family. Several activities are in the planning stages for the exhibitors and their families to enjoy including the 3-on-3 Basketball Tourney and Pizza Night on Friday and a BBQ and Corn Hole Tournament Saturday evening. The Corn Hole activity is a new addition to the show this year and will be hosted by the Michigan Planning Committee. The show, of course, also offers several educational activities for exhibitors including a judging contest, skillathon, individual and team showmanship classes, besides the breed and market lamb classes. There will be two new breeds joining the show this year, Texels and Babydoll Southdowns. Look for more information in the premium book. Entries close May 25. The AAJS is a large event with a huge budget. Corporate sponsorship is always needed

for the general expenses, especially the facility rental. This year the Online Semen Auction will be run again on May 18 through Integrity Livestock Sales. Each breed rep has been asked to reach out to their members for the donation of two-five straws of semen from worthy rams of the breed. Shropshire breeders interested should contact Becky in the Shropshire office by May 1. The American Shropshire Registry Association is responsible for raising a $1025 breed sponsorship for the awards for the show. They will be looking for individual class sponsors at the upcoming Ohio Showcase Sale in May. Cost for a class sponsorship is $35. If you would like to be a class sponsor and will not be in attendance at the May sale please feel free to contact the ASRA Office (413)6249652 or shropsec@hotmail.com with your sponsorship. We have several options for class sponsorship and also for the Top Gun Award. Each year the AAJS produces a big large thank-you banner that is displayed at the show and the Shropshire sponsors are listed on that banner. Thank-you in advance for your generosity.

Shropshire Scholarship winners Each year the ASRA offers two $400 college scholarships to students directly involved with Shropshire sheep and enrolled in an undergraduate program. Students must submit an application, two letters of recommendation and complete transcript by June 1. In 2019, seven applications were received and they were all very impressive, requiring a little extra study by the evaluators. The first winner was Ethan Elsbury, introduced in the October 2019 issue. The second winner is Wyatt Graves from El Dorado Springs, Mo. and he came highly recommended by his references. Wyatt is the son of Andy and Jodi Graves and graduated from the El Dorado Springs High School in May 2018. He is attending Crowder College in Neosho, Mo. where he is studying agri-business and finance. In high school,Wyatt was a four-year honor student and lettered in three sports for all four years. Wyatt was highly active in FFA and 4-H, earning his American farmer degree last year.Wyatt has been a member of the National Junior Shropshire Association and has been vice president for two years. Here is a bit of

his essay: “My name is Wyatt Graves. I started raising Shropshire sheep when I was eight years old. I showed them at our local fairs, district fair Ozark Empire and the Missouri State Fair. By the time that I was 13 I had a registered ram and 10 ewes. In May of 2014 my dad got really sick and spent over 60 days at KU Medical Center. My mom spent her weekdays at the hospital with my dad and came home to see my brother, sister and me on the weekends. I stayed with my grandparents and I was responsible for making sure that all the chores got done and lambs were ready for the fairs. I was very excited that my parents trusted me enough to be in charge when they were gone. On Father’s Day my dad received a lifesaving liver transplant. When he and my mom were finally able to come home, my parents sat me down and told me they were very sorry but I was going to have to sell some of my sheep. I was very sad, but was happy that my dad was able to come home for good and knew it was what was best for my parents because they have a lot of medical bills from then and, unfortunately, they have continued to grow. My dad has many doctors’ appointments still and his anti-rejection meds have now caused him to develop skin cancer. I kept my ram and two ewes. Over the last five years I have rebuilt the flock to two rams and 23 ewes with the help of my parents and my siblings. I continue to show at our local fairs, Ozark Empire and Missouri State. I have also added the Kansas State Fair, Midwest Jr. Preview Show and the Midwest Stud Ram Sale. This year I am adding the Junior All-American Show and the Big Ohio in Eaton and hopefully NAILE and Nebraska. I have been very honored and proud to have won FFA Grand Champion Shropshire Ewe the last four years at the Missouri State Fair. I have been honored with winning showmanship award three times at the Missouri State Fair. I have also had many ewes and rams make the Grand Champion Drives in both the junior and the open shows. But my proudest __________________ Shropshire Voice

Promoting sheep thru 4-H Vivian Stephenson is the president of her 4-H chapter, Country Critters, and the junior sheep project leader. She hosted the January 4-H meeting at her family’s farm and put together and educational event that encompassed all things “sheep.” The evening included an informational video put together about sheep facts, the uses of sheep worldwide and lambing at the farm. Vivian also gave an informational presentation about processing lambs and sheep husbandry. The kids had a hands on opportunity with new lambs, wool yarn, roving, a sheep pelt and various equipment. The meeting concluded with a sampling of grilled lamb chops, which was a first for several. It was great to see the interest and enthusiasm from the children and parents alike! _____________________________

moments have been when I have seen younger kids that I have sold sheep to, take their animals and win awards for themselves at fairs. I am proud that I have ewes that have been bought and are in places like Pennsylvania and Iowa and all over Missouri. My mom jokes with me that I miss my sheep more than I do her now that I am in college. It might be kind of true. I was very active in my FFA with my sheep through high school and have loved every minute of it. My senior year I was offered opportunities to play college football. I was excited, honored, scared and ready for the next step in my life. After some college tours and many hours of talking with my parents I made the decision to go to college and get an agri-business and finance degree. One of my main deciding factors was my sheep. I knew that I could not go months without being able to be home and see them and work with them. My long term life goals
are centered on my sheep. I want to become known as one of the top Shropshire Breeders in the state of Missouri, as well as the country. But I want to be known for being that breeder that does whatever it takes to help younger and new people to the sheep world find a passion and love of the species and breed, whether it is in the show ring or just as a farmer. I think that I am on my way with this goal. I hope and would be honored to receive the American Shropshire scholarship. I think I represent the sheep world well. I will use the money to help me finish my degree at Crowder College so that I can transfer to Missouri State and get my bachelors. I have many long term goals on what I need to do to continue making my flock better and can’t wait to one day share this love of sheep with my own children like my parents did with me. Congratulations to Wyatt on his hard work and his interest in Shropshires.

Rare Beasts
A Bestiary of Rare and Endangered Farm Animals was a recognizable breed known by the name Shropshire Sheep making it one of the oldest recognized British breeds of sheep. A Shropshire Breed Society and Flock Book were created by devoted breeders in 1882. The Shropshire was first imported into Canada in 1861, probably by the Miller family in Ontario who maintained a flock continuously until 1996. Between 1885 and 1895 20,000 Shropshires were exported from Britain to supply the growing world market. By 1908 the sheep was one of the most popular in Canada, second only to the Leicester. Tim Barnes of Ohio came across this interesting article on the history of Shropshires. It is part of the Rare Beasts art project by Alyson Champ of Quebec, Canada. The project consists of a series of 20 original painted-paper and gold leaf collages, each depicting a rare or endangered breed of farm animal chosen from The Canadian Livestock Conservation List. Shropshire sheep were on this list. The artist’s goal is to raise awareness about the problem of biodiversity loss in modern agriculture. The full project can be viewed at www.alysonchamp.com. Page from the Flock Book of the Shropshire Sheep Breeders Association, 1897 The decline of the Shropshire was due to a combination of factors. In the 1940s, American breeders began to take the ‘wool from the nose to toes’ wool cover of the breed to the extreme. They also bred for shorter, stockier sheep. This resulted in animals which were too small, difficult to shear, and prone to ‘wool blindness’ – they were so covered in wool that they could not see. In Britain the Shrop’s decline was due to trade disruption caused by two world wars, hoof and mouth disease outbreaks which made it impossible to export

British sheep, and reduced demand for large roasts of lamb and mutton. Sheep breeders in Britain came to prefer larger, taller sheep with less wool around the legs and face. American breeders eventually followed suit with the result that the breed was severely altered. Although the wool-covered, stocky, oldfashioned Shropshire is nearly gone, the modern, open-faced version has rebounded to the extent that it was removed from the UK Rare Breeds Survival Trust conservation _______ Page 47

list in 2013.The renewed interest in the breed in Britain and Europe is due to one of the Shrop’s more unusual and previously unrecognized traits: it is the only breed of sheep that doesn’t strip the bark off fruit trees or eat the leaves of conifers. This behavioural quirk has made it a popular lawn-mower in orchards
and Christmas tree plantations. In Canada the Shropshire’s numbers went into serious decline in the 1950s and have never recovered. From a population which once numbered in the thousands, perhaps 140 registered Shropshires remain in the entire country.

Word is people weren’t happy with our last advertisement. We were fine with it, and was a tamed-down version of the original. It was truthful, and brought appropriate attention to an issue those passionate about Pure Shropshires have been concerned about. Our goal is to improve the breed (from within the breed) & build commercial relevance for pure Shropshires. We are doing that. When’s the last time there were 34 Shropshire Lamb carcasses hanging in a cooler prior to when we did it last October?
We’re not sure what people didn’t like about the last advertisement. Maybe it was these two statements that we feel need to be reiterated: 1) Stop using rams that don’t meet Shropshire standards. 2) Stop using sheep from other breeds to win a ribbon. Call Cody if you have issues with our advertisements. People and Pedigrees You Can Trust. Traditional Genetics with a Modern Purpose. Contact us with interest in ewes, rams, and/or semen.
