From the Secretary Hello from the Shropshire office in 2018! This marks the beginning of my second decade as the “PR girl” for this breed. But, I’m sure it was just yesterday that I learned of this opportunity and obsessed for eight months over the possibility that I might one day become a “breed secretary.” One trip to Louisville and two interviews later and I found it had happened. My first thought then was “now what do I do?” I’m happy to report that I think we’ve figured each other out and the result is positive. A look at the year-end statistics showed lots of movement in the right direction. The financials are healthy and the office production records are promising. In 2017 there were 2555 Shropshires registered. That’s 126 up from last year, which is again more than the highest registering member. On the transfer end, there were 1260 sheep transferred, which is up 39 head. Of the transfers, 219 head were sold in our usual sales, leaving the balance of 1041 sold by the breeders’ own efforts in private and online sales. I am tickled by the fact that 54 of those are transferred by “production” type flocks. I had a request a few days ago for a photo from the 1980s. I had some old Sheep

Breeder magazines around and spent an evening going through the Shropshire issues and found the photo we were looking for! Actually, I found a lot of them including one of my husband Hoop and I with a Dorset ram we bought in that era. I couldn’t help but notice the changes in all of the breeds over that 25ish year period and the trend toward the extreme scale kind of sheep to the “tall is not all” version and on to today’s more conventional style is very visible. I know every breeder has a preferred style of Shropshire and that is what provides all of the “pieces” that other breeders reach for in order to make the kinds of sheep they want. I hope that breeders will continue to be judicious about the Shropshire breed type and consider it carefully when making their breeding choices. On another note, while in Louisville last November, I met with the producer of our registration software, as well as the other breed registrars that use the same program, now numbering five, including Shrops. We spent an afternoon going over the ins and outs of the system and suggesting or requesting other features and abilities. All in all, I feel really good about our move to this program in July 2015 after “the crash”

We look forward to visiting with all of you at the Indiana Premier and the Ohio Classic.

and look forward to the update this year.   We expect the Shropshire Starter Flock program to take place again this year, as well as the college scholarships, Shropshire Royalty and, of course, the yearling ewe and ewe lamb futurities. These programs only survive due to the support of the breeders, be it contributions to support the funds or passing along information to qualified applicants. It takes both to make them work so we look forward to your help and applications. Many, many thanks to Alan Bruhin and Bob Dinsmore who retired from the ASRA Board of Directors in November. Both had represented the “Pennsylvania and South District.” Mr. Dinsmore has been on the board for many years and was an avid fan of the Junior Shropshire Shows and Wether Shows. He runs Sheepman Supply as part of his Ceresville New Holland dealership in Frederick, Maryland. I enjoyed the story about his purchase of Sheepman Supply in 1999 while we were waiting for the Annual Meeting in Louisville. Alan Bruhin came onto the Board in 2011 to replace Ralph Lovely, who retired at that time. Alan was elected as vicepresident of the board in November 2014. He has been instrumental in the Junior Shropshire Association and also helped to coordinate the Starter Flock Program. We will miss the service of both of these members greatly and we wish them good fortune in their future endeavors. Replacing them are Caleb Fritz and Paul Young, both of Tennessee, and I am sure they will do everything they can to represent the district well. This year looks to be a busy one for promoting Shropshire with lots of sales and shows happening and breeders putting their best feet forward to advertise their flocks. Be sure to let me or Rinda Maddox know of your stories and successes for future interesting reading in the Voice. See you in the spring!

Minutes of the Annual Meeting of the Members November 12, 2017, Louisville, Ky Jim Percival called the meeting to order at 6 p.m. with 36 persons present and introduced the directors present: Re Call, Mandy Curtis, Bob Dinsmore, RJ Creamer, Jim Percival, Danny Rogers, Tom Slutz, Rick Adams and Jim Gruenhagen. Directors Alan Bruhin, Emily Petzel, Mary Anne Keck, Darrell Dockter, Craig King and Mike Elsbury were not present. Secretary’s report – Secretary Becky Peterson had printed the minutes from The September 2016 Annual Meeting in West Springfield, Mass. and had them available. Mark McCabe moved to accept them as printed. Motion seconded by Bob Dinsmore. There were no additions or corrections. Treasurer’s report – Becky Peterson provided printed copies of the financial report as of October 31, 2017 and explained the Balance Sheet which showed total assets of $60,527.58. Becky noted that the Accounts Receivable and Accounts Payable did not include the advertising income and production expense for the recent October Voice. Also noted that the checking account and two C.D.s still at the Harvard Bank in Illinois will soon be closed and the funds moved to the bank in Massachusetts. The Profit and Loss Statement for the period January through October showed a net income of $10,363.81, again not including October Voice income and expense or the NAILE matching entry fees, all of which were done in November. Becky described the activity in the Revolving Accounts which are running sums of the activities from 2008 through October 2017, including the Starter Flock, Junior Association and Stars of Louisville Sale, showing a loss of $221.15. Becky then gave a run-down of the registry statistics showing 2440 sheep registered in 2017 as of October 31 (increase of four percent over same period last year), 1136 sheep transferred (increase of 1.5%), 25

new adult memberships (increase or 13.6%), 153 returning adult members (decrease of 4.9%), 132 Junior memberships (increase of 1.5%). There were no questions about the treasurer’s report. Bill Bryant moved to accept the report as presented, Jim Gruenhagen seconded. Motion passed. Report accepted. Youth activities – The Junior Association met the day before and enjoyed a presentation by Jesse Shanks about Ovine Reproduction. Jim Percival introduced the two members of the 2017 Shropshire Royalty, Princess Taylor Ruff and Bo Peep Addisen Nicholson. He also said that the Scholarships had been awarded at that time to Rylie Miller and Dalton Hicks. Becky reported to the group the statistics for the 2017 Futurity. There were nine sales that had futurity-nominated sheep. There were 36 yearling ewes nominated of which 24 were purchased by juniors and 13 tracked for points. The yearling ewe fund had $720. There were 137 ewe lambs nominated of which 59 were purchased by juniors and 24 tracked. Thank you to the breeders who continue to support the program with nominations. Congratulations to the winners of the 2017 Futurity Program which was determined at the conclusion of the junior show. The yearling ewe winner was Chloe Stonesifer. The East Division of the ewe lamb futurity was won by Addisen Nicholson. The West & Central Division winner was Kyle Gross who was also the recipient of the Starter Flock this year. The Mid East and Overall winner was Taylor Ruff. Thank you to RJ Creamer, Rick Adams and Mark McCabe for keeping track of the futurity entries in the National Junior Show. Jim remarked briefly about the success of the Starter Flock program with all of the past recipients still engaged with Shropshires and two have come back to contribute toward future programs. Board meeting report – Jim Percival summarized the board meeting of the day before. Becky reported on the Stars of Louisville Sale of the previous day with _______ Page 9

a total of 14 head sold at an average of $573.21. The sale still made a profit of $487. There are six Shropshire flock enrolled in NSIP and recording data and breeders are encouraged to participate. Jim noted that Alan Bruhin was stepping down as director and will no longer be coordinating the junior association. Jim reminded those present to go to their last Voice and respond by December 1 with a nomination of a judge for the National Show at NAILE in 2018. ASRA will be sending the entire QuickBooks program for a compilation of the 2016 and 2017 financials at the end of the year. The futurity program point scale will be the same for next year. National Sale will be at Eaton; Shrops will show and sell first. RJ and the Ohio Shropshire Association will perform a dinner again on Friday night. Becky had requested the purchase of a new display board that will hold up better with all of its moving around. There was one question from the floor regarding the list of nominated judges for the 2018 NAILE Show. Jim clarified that all nominations will be considered and the board will review them and submit an order of preference to NAILE staff. There were no other questions. Election of Directors – Becky reminded the group of the Bylaw that states that any region having its own association can nominate its own director. Regions not having their own associations will have nominations from the floor at the Annual Meeting.

The following regions had directors’ terms expiring: Ohio, Indiana, New England, and New York and Pennsylvania and South. Jim Percival was nominated again by Ohio. Indiana nominated Danny Rogers and Mike Elsbury to second term. New England and New York nominated Mandy Swartz Curtis to another term. Those regions nominations are set. Pennsylvania and South still requires two nominations to fill the two terms expiring, Bob Dinsmore and Alan Bruhin and Alan does not wish to run again. Jim stated that nominations would be accepted from the floor. If there were more than two, then a paper ballot will be taken. Jim then called for nominations. Rick Adams nominated Caleb Fritz from Tennessee. Bill Bryant nominated Paul Young, also from Tennessee. There were no further nominations. Bill Bryant moved to close nominations and Tom Slutz seconded. Nominations were closed. Since there were only two nominations for the Pennsylvania & South Region, those two nominees would take the director seats. Rick Adams expressed his appreciation to Alan Bruhin and Bob Dinsmore for their years of service and dedication to the Shropshire breed. A round of applause for the two men followed. There was no old business brought forward. Mark McCabe moved to adjourn the meeting. Bill Bryant seconded. The meeting was adjourned at 6:45 p.m.. Respectfully submitted, Becky Peterson

Board of Director’s Meeting November 11, 2017 NAILE, Louisville Ky The meeting was called to order at 1 p.m. by President Jim Percival. Present were RJ Creamer, Mandy Curtis, Mike Elsbury, Jim Gruenhagen, Re Call, Bob Dinsmore, Danny Rogers, Tom Slutz, Rick Adams and Alan Bruhin. Becky Peterson was present as secretary. Not attending were Craig King, Emily Petzel and Darrell Dockter. Becky had previously distributed the minutes of the May 12 meeting to the board members. RJ Creamer moved to accept them as presented.Tom Slutz seconded. Becky had also sent a treasurer’s report for the year as of October 31. The Balance Sheet showed the total assets to be $60,527.58. The Profit & Loss report showed a Net Income of $10,363.81 so far. Becky noted that the October Voice production expense and advertising income were not included yet but there was an approximate loss of $500. Becky ran down through the report to point out any differences from the previous year. Registration statistics showed an increase of 95 registrations and 17 transfers over the same period in 2016. She also discussed the “special revolving funds” within the general fund. They are income accounts with some expenditures, the report showing only the 2017 activity. She also keeps a running total since 2008 showing a loss of $221.15 over all of those activities. Becky reported that the signature work was now complete for the accounts remaining at the Harvard Bank in Illinois and that she would be moving those funds (checking account $10,521.31 and two C.D.s totaling $11569.03) to the Massachusetts bank and putting that amount in higher yielding accounts. With no further discussion of the treasurer’s report, Jim Gruenhagen moved to accept the report as presented with a second from Rick Adams. Motion passed. Voice & Promotion – Book is doing well, Rinda still would like more input on youth activities. There is usually a small shortfall in covering the production cost. Rick Adams suggested that we shouldn’t be concerned as it

provides an important service to the members. Stars of Louisville Sale – held earlier in the day. There were 19 ewes entered, 17 shown, 14 sold at an average of $573. All 13 ewe lambs were nominated for the 2018 Yearling Futurity. Eight were purchased by junior buyers. Sale profited $487.86. Discussion followed. It seems that 15-16 head would be optimum entry. Bob Dinsmore moved to hold the sale again in 2018. Mandy Curtis seconded. Motion passed. Becky will request sale venue for next year. Production – Rick Adams reported that there are six NSIP Shropshire flocks submitting data. He stated that he has been participating for four years and is starting to see trends and relevance in his flock. There were two NSIP sales in 2017.There is a demand for Shropshire rams with data as range rams. One flock entered two rams in the Wyoming Ram Test with 15th and 30th ranking out of 60 rams. It would be good to have a short article for the Voice describing how to enroll a flock in NSIO and how to collect and submit data. Becky noted again that there is a capability to include NSIP data in the current Shropshire registration database and print data on the registration certificate. Breed Type committee – there has been no progress on the breed type education publication. Debbie Petzel is still willing to continue her work on this project. More pictures and input is needed to finish this. Jim asked Mike Elsbury, Mandy Curtis and Jim Gruenhagen to continue gather photos for this project. Futurity Update – Becky gave an update on the futurity nominations for the year. There were 36 yearling ewes nominated, 24 were purchased by juniors, points were tracked on 13 ewes, yearling ewe fund is $720.There were 137 ewe lambs nominated, 59 were purchased by juniors and 24 have been tracked, ewe lamb fund is $2740. Junior Activities – Alan Bruhin stated that the Junior Association meeting will be later in the afternoon. There will be a presentation on Ovine Reproduction. Alan announced that he will be stepping down from the Board of Directors and we will need a person to step in to help with the juniors. Becky inquired about the possibility of hir__________________ Shropshire Voice

ing a paid Junior Coordinator.Activities that will need direction include the Junior Association meeting at NAILE, Shropshire activities at the All-American Junior Show and any fund raising for any of the junior projects. Hopefully, the junior directors would be able to meet or have a teleconference now and then to coordinate their plans. Jim asked Alan Bruhin, Re Call, Rick Adams and Becky to set up a job description, etc., and come back to the BOD teleconference Starter Flock Fund – $1525 was raised this year and added to the $150 left from 2016.The 2017 expense was $1500 for the purchase of two ewes by the winner Kyle Gross. This leaves $175 left to start off next year. Of the donations this year, several were from repeat sponsors, $700 came from board members, and $300 came from previous Starter Flock winners. Every one of the previous winners is still engaged in the project. Members of the Heartland Group, Brett Oelke and Millie Moore, were present to provide updates on the Midwest Stud Ram Sale

Happy New Year from the

and the NAILE sheep show. Brett reported that the Shropshire entry at the MWSRS is holding steady at 40-50 head. The 2017 average was $714 on 38 head sold. Mary Anne Keck is the Shropshire representative on the Sale Staff. It was noted to now have the Southdown judge evaluate the Shropshires instead of the wether sire judge. Becky asked why the futurity nominations were not deducted from the settlements this year where it had been in the past. Millie said the request to deduct the nomination fees needs to be formal and can be done on the breed profile survey. Brett congratulated the breed as Shropshires had the third highest entry of the Open show at NAILE this year. He noted that there were mixed reviews on the new staggered release this year. NAILE Judge Selection – nomination forms were in the October Voice and open to the entire adult membership to nominate judges. Nominations are due in the office on Dec. 1. Becky will email the membership list a reminder to submit their suggestions. Nominations will be tallied and submitted to the BOD in ad-

vance of the January Teleconference. Discussion followed. No motion was made but the discussion leaned toward the BOD making an order of preference from the suggestions received. Shropshire Store – Jim Percival reported that the vendor that he had arranged was no longer interested. He suggested that the board look for a new vendor to produce T-shirts and other items. The modified 125th Anniversary logo is in place to proceed. Hall of Fame – The breed needs to thank the earlier breeders for the work done to get Shropshires where they are today. A committee established in May was Mary Anne Keck, RJ Creamer and Tom Slutz. Guidelines need to be set to get started. Committee should check with the other breeds that have such a program and look at their guidelines and meet before the next teleconference. Financial Review – Becky contacted several accountants who said that a review or an audit is not required by the IRS or any other overseer. A public charity (ASRA is not a public charity) is required to file a report with the Attorney General and would need such a review. A compilation would provide a Balance Sheet and a Profit & Loss Statement and would suit the needs of the ASRA. One accountant that does not do Non-Profit work said he would have to charge so much and to get so little and suggested and internal review. The bylaws require an “audit” yearly but an actual audit would be quite cost prohibitive. Discussion followed suggesting a compilation annually and a review every five years or so.The Board of Directors feels that this would satisfy the Bylaw Statement. Becky had price quotes from two accountants for compilation, $300 and $480. The service that provided the most information during the inquiry was Richard Abbott ($300 quote). Rick Adams moved to arrange for a compilation by Richard Abbott for the end of 2017. RJ Creamer seconded. Motion passed. Becky will submit the entire QuickBooks data 2008-2017. Futurity Point Scale – The new 2017 Point Scale was to be reviewed after one year. There has been only one person questioning the scale. Mandy Curtis moved to leave the scale in place as is for another year. Tom Slutz seconded. Motion passed. National Sale 2018 – RJ Creamer reported _______ Page 14

that the National Sale will be at the Big Ohio Sale in Eaton in May. Shrops will show and sell first in the day. The judge will be Dustin Cruit. Rams will show and sell first as requested by several breeds. There needs be some sort of internet viewing/bidding. RJ and the Ohio Association will work to provide a meal on Friday evening. ASRA will sponsor the Champion & Reserve Champion Ram and Ewe banners for the show. Check with Brad Slutz who had ordered them in the past. Other new business – Follow up with the Oklahoma Youth Expo as to whether they will continue to have the Shropshire breed in the wether show. Re Call mentioned that Hampshire Association emails a monthly newsletter with news and coming events. RJ moved to have Becky purchase a new display board as the current one is starting to fail and the older one that RJ has is also failing. Perhaps the current one could be held in one area of the country and a newer one could be moved around. Tom Slutz seconded. Motion passed. Becky will research. Next meeting will be late January/early February teleconference call. Election of Officers – Jim Gruenhagen nominated Jim Percival to serve another year as president. There were no other nominations. Bob Dinsmore moved to close nominations for president, seconded by RJ Creamer. Motion passed. Rick Adams nominated RJ Creamer as vice president. There were no others, Mike Elsbury moved to close nominations for vice president and Bob Dinsmore seconded. Motion passed. During a brief conference while Secretary Becky Peterson left the room, she was rehired for another year. Annual meeting – Becky has an abbreviated financial report and futurity update. Jim Percival will present a summary of the board meeting. Officers will be presented, election of directors to take place. Per the Bylaws, Ohio, New England/ New York and Indiana have their own associations and make their own nominations. Region Pennsylvania and South have two directors leaving and at least two nominations are needed. There was no other business to come before the Board. Rick Adams moved to adjourn. RJ Creamer seconded. Meeting was adjourned at 3:40 p.m. __________________ Shropshire Voice

Shropshire Starter Flock Program to continue into its fifth year The Flock Starter Program is a project undertaken by the National Junior Shropshire Sheep Association to award a group of Shropshire ewes to a deserving youngster new to the breed. After four successful years with 37 applicants, the program continues in 2018. To apply, you are required to submit an essay to the Shropshire office that should include background information about yourself and your interest in sheep. This document should illustrate your goals and intentions with the animals should you win the award. There should also be a budget included in the paperwork that is sent in. We ask that you type your essay and submit it by April 1. Please include your mailing address and telephone number. All applicants should be between the ages of eight and 20. The winner of the award will be notified and will receive a $1500 credit voucher from the ASRA to purchase two or more Shropshire ewes of his or her choice at any of the Shropshire sales in 2018. Application information will be available on www.shropshires.org and from the Shropshire office. To ensure the success of this program, _______ Page 24

Jessy Shanks, left, talks to the junior breeders about ovine reproduction during the Junior Association meeting at NAILE in November.

Junior Association The Junior Association meeting was held in Louisville, Ky. in conjunction with NAILE’s National Junior Shropshire Show on November 11. Thirteen youngsters signed in for the meeting and a very interesting presentation on Ovine Reproduction with Jessy Shanks from the University of Tennessee. The Tennessee Skillathon Team, winners of the NAILE Skillathon and coached by ASRA director Alan Bruhin, were also present as part of their preparation for their event. After pizza and beverages, the group held their meeting and chose their directors and officers. When all was said and done, the following youngsters became directors of the Junior Shropshire Association: Noah Collins of Tennessee – President and Pennsylvania & South Director _______ Page 30

Taylor Ruff of Ohio – Vice-President and Ohio Director Kacie Haag of Illinois – Secretary and Illinois Director Addisen Nicholson of Connecticut – New England and New York Director Hagan Martin of Oklahoma – Recreation Manager and Southwest Director Brady Miller of Indiana – Indiana Director Vivian Stephenson of Wisconsin – Wisconsin/Michigan Director. The group will be working on fundraising for their projects in 2018. The Starter Flock program had its origins in this group as well as the Shropshire Royalty now in its second year. There will also be activities they will be involved in at the All-American Junior Show in Indianapolis in July. The Junior Association programs at NAILE have been organized now for a few years by Alan Bruhin, ASRA Director from Tennessee. Many thanks to Alan for his hard work with the juniors over the years! __________________ Shropshire Voice

The ewes were sorted for sale order ahead of the Stars of Louisville Sale.

Stars of Louisville sale averages $573 The North American Shropshire events are all final and in the books. We had a very busy three days of Shropshire activity in Louisville. Saturday started off with the 9th Annual Stars of Louisville Sale. Seventeen very nice ewe lambs and yearling ewes were sorted for sale order by Jim Percival. Danny Westlake sold the sale with the help of Tim Barnes on the block. Fourteen head sold for an average of $573. This certainly wasn’t the strongest result we’ve had but it was a very popular set of sheep. The Champion Ewe was the yearling consigned by John Melvin. She sold for $900 to Schoolhouse Shropshires. The Reserve Champion Ewe was a February Ewe Lamb from Bryant Shrops that sold to Carlee Cox for $750. City Limits had the class winning January Lamb that went to Addisen Nicholson

for $800. The second lamb came from Erik Mrozinski and sold for the same price to Joe and Cheryl Majors. They in turn sold the third January ewe for $300 to Schoolhouse. The 2nd February lamb sold to Lloyd Coleman for $450. Jim Isler sold the third February lamb to Don and Re Call for $300.The March class was won by Randy Rife with a $900 lamb going to Kylie Adams. Rife sold the next one to Noah Collins for $600. Caleb Fritz got $350 for his ewe selling to Majors. Kaylee Bazille chose the Moeller ewe lamb for $300. Rife had all of the April ewe lambs with the first one going to Vivian Stephenson for $800 and the next one selling to Brady Miller for $300. The final lamb in the sale sold from Rife to Abby Isler for $400. A complete sale report is available on www. shropshires.org. KSEM, Inc

By Randy Rife Breed Historian

“History – Anything that happened before today”

Let’s talk about the weather, not our wethers. This past several months our country has been hit by a series of calamities, disasters and tragedies. One or another has affected every American in some way. As we look back to Norman Rockwell’s beautiful paintings of winter farmsteads, we can’t but admire these scenes of years ago. I was born in 1947 and for years, everyone in the Midwest talked about the big 1950 snow. In quick order it dumped 15 to 20 inches of snow the day of the Ohio State-Michigan football game. There was not one pass play the entire game. My neighbor, years later, talked of playing in the OSU Band that day. By the time I was six or eight years of age, there was still an old wood sleigh back in the woods that Dad had hurriedly assembled to drag behind his tractor to get feed to his animals. We lived back a half mile lane, with a deep, open ditch parallel on the west side. The old sow’s sleeper boxes became filled with snow and the sows moved to the ditch. They were totally covered in deep snow, but survived. Our house and barns were on a hill at the end of our lane. One January morning in 1964 or 1965, Dad woke us up and said, “There has been a severe ice storm in the night and there is no school, but we are going to sell hogs today. Get up!” You see, hogs were about 17-cents per pound and if he could get his hogs to the packer in Dayton by 1 p.m. they would pay a two-cent premium. That was real money. We had around 230 meat hogs out in the field nearly a half mile back of the barns, and to sell them we had to drive them on the ice and across a creek to get them to the barn area in a corral to sort them. Did you ever drive hogs _______ Page 40

on ice? With other folks who came over to help, there were six or eight of us. We had to shake straw over the creek to get them to cross. Once in the corral, we sorted out the 150 hogs that were big enough. Dad had set up with Ben and his dad, Joe Koogler, to bring their semis to haul his hogs. This was fine until those empty trucks attempted to climb the hill in front of the house. No way could they make it up the icy hill! We backed dad’s new 1964 GMC threequarter ton 4x4 truck into the corn crib and shoveled the bed heaped full of ear corn. Believe it or not, his Palomino tan pickup truck pulled those semi-trucks up the hill! My sister, Jane, and I got to go to the packing house in Dayton, 25 miles to the west, and enjoyed 15cent hamburgers from Burger Chef on the way home. Many remember the April 3, 1974 tornado that first touched down in Texas and hopped up and down all the way to Ontario, Canada. At 4:25 p.m. it hit Xenia, Ohio, our county seat on the southwest corner and ripped right through town. It passed about two miles south of Julie and I’s current farm. Thirty-one people were killed in Xenia. It’s rated the second most severe tornado in history. There was a train passing through town with cars loaded with coal. It picked up one full car and set it directly on top of another loaded car, with very little coal spilled. My sister’s classmate, his wife and baby, were at the A&W root beer stand and four others were inside the building. All seven died with not a mark or scar on them. The vacuum of the eye of the tornado sucked all the air out of their lungs. At 4:30 in the afternoon, the kids were already home from school which was a true blessing, as most of the school buildings in town were leveled. They found a cancelled __________________ Shropshire Voice

check in Ontario from Xenia, Ohio. The debris on farms was a real chore to clean up and created flat tires on tractors and implements for several months. As a point of interest, our current ASRA president, Jim Percival, was Xenia’s city manager for many years, starting several years after the tornado, and is now retired. In November of 1977 I went to a planning meeting at the OSU sheep barn for the All-Breed Ohio Invitational Sheep Sale. At the end of the meeting, Ron Guenther, OSU’s shepherd, stated, “ The Shropshire and Southdown flocks are back in the barn if anyone would like to see them before they leave, as they are sold.” You see, state landgrant universities with colleges of agriculture, for years, used Shropshires and Southdowns, along with Hampshires, for judging teams. All at once they dropped the Shropshires and Downers and added Polled Dorsets and Suffolks. They put them up for sealed bids at OSU. Ron said, “Nancy Ferguson from Oregon got the Southdowns and Gayle Diehl of Ohio bought the Shrops.” Gayle had bid $201.50 and Verne Hoffman from California had bid $201. He said Verne was very disappointed. Julie and I had gone heavily in debt in early 1977 on a 325-acre farm. That summer we experienced a severe drought, with our entire corn crop averaging 75-bushels per acre and this was prior to today’s lucrative Federal Crop Insurance. I came home that night and talked with Julie about selling our flock to Verne. I called him and sold him our 36 brood ewes and two stud rams. The weather turned

bad and he couldn’t drive the 2500 miles east to pick them up. Most lambed before he could get here. In late January of 1978 the 11 p.m. weather man said, “We don’t know what’s going to happen; the barometric pressure is at 27, the lowest we’ve ever recorded. The “Blizzard of ‘78” hit. Verne called the next morning concerned about his new flock. I told him we couldn’t see the barn, just 80 feet from the house, but they were all inside and safe. The only brood ewe we kept was the mother of our first champion at Ohio. The reserve champion ram lamb from 1976 that went with the flock as a two-year-old, along with our Ohio State University stud. We also kept our 12 replacement ewe lambs and rebuilt. Verne lost most of these sheep in a barn fire a year or two later. He told me later, “The 1976 reserve ram was worth what I paid for the entire flock.” Tim Barnes and I worked together for many years. We owned rams together, traded the use of ram lambs, traveled and trimmed sheep for show and sale as a team, and always maintained a special friendship. In early April of 1980 he and I took a fast trip to Iowa on the scout for a new stud.We stopped at Jim Careys,Voss Brothers and Russell Whitney. We later bought the first and third yearlings from that summer’s Spectacular in Bloomington from U-Conn and Louis Agrall for $1050 and $900. Tim and Debbie rode with Julie and I that weekend. Heather Stewart Hough of Peoria, Ill. put a sign on a post in the sale barn for a stud ram that had been champion at Illinois as a lamb and reserve at NAILE in 1977. This was the first time Debbie had been away _______ Page 41

from their new baby boy, Shane and she really wanted to get home, but I insisted we go 75 miles further west after the sale to see this ram. Debbie said, “You guys just bought two high priced rams. Why bother? Let’s get home!” We went on west and I bought this ram for $500. Heather told us Everett Glasgow had wanted this ram ever since he had won at Illinois as a lamb and she priced him for $5000 because she really didn’t want Everett to have him. I named him “Five Grand.” He proved to be one of the most prepotent rams I ever used. The U-Conn ram ended up with fertility issues and Tim and I made a flying trip with Rick Swendal as the main driver in early April of 1982 to select a replacement. The ram we selected we named “Goosechase” because on that trip we drove way up to Peter D’Ambras in Skowhegan, Maine to look at a ram that really wasn’t what we wanted after seeing him. All the way up, we drove through deep snow. The only traffic was Scott paper log trucks. It had been a real goose chase! I’m writing about my remembrances of weather related issues if you are forgetting the subject. I sold Pioneer Seed for 28 years. The company pushed us to take delivery of seed as early as possible. One year, we had three semi loads of corn delivered around January 20. It was minus 23 degrees with a wind chill of minus 40 degrees. I wore two pairs of coveralls and still froze while unloading seed with my open 4020 John Deere with loader. I went to the house to warm up for 30 minutes between each load. That night, I called my district man and told him, “I will never get seed delivered until March again!” I stuck to that promise. Another late January, my dad and mother spent a week in Florida. We had a deep snow and again minus 20 degree the day I was to _______ Page 42

meet them at the airport. I went to a local farm sale that morning, left after about an hour, dropped off my truck at dad’s and drove their car to the airport. I told them,“You really should consider taking a return flight to Florida!” They didn’t. I took them home and drove my pickup back to the sale. It was probably the best farm equipment sale I ever witnessed. During the last several months, we have experienced across our country great weather challenges…. hurricanes in Houston, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands, and Florida; devastating wildfires all over the west, and in early January, major blizzard, snow, wind and cold conditions. All this and currently flooding and mud slides in southern California. When will it stop? Or when will it get back to normal? What is normal? Here in West Central Ohio, we experienced two weeks since Christmas with nine days of 0 degrees or below. They say this is our longest cold spell since 1961. All I know is that I wish Al Gore could have been here to assist with my lambing. I thought we had it bad, but talked with Charlie Washburn, Emily’s dad, in upstate New York yesterday and he told me they were minus 32 degrees actual temperatures on two mornings! They were happy their lambs aren’t due for a couple of weeks. I guess we shouldn’t complain. On January 8, Sydney, Australia sweltered through it’s hottest day in nearly 80 years, as the temperature hit 117 degrees. Other news that day talked of folks stranded at JFK airport for over 72 hours. After reading my first draft to Julie, she said, “You sound like an old man.” I replied, “I am!” Just like Gale Diehl, who is somewhere around 85, gets up every morning, feeds his sheep and drives to the “Liars Club” at McDonalds to sit and B.S. with his chums. What would we do if we didn’t have the weather to talk about? Lord knows, we have no control over it. __________________ Shropshire Voice
