From the Secretary As of this writing in March, spring has not made an appearance here in Massachusetts or any of the North East, though the calendar says it is here. I heard on the local news tonight that Worcester, in the center of the state, has received 108 inches of snow which is the highest amount for any U.S. large city this year. And last year we had hardly any snow, so go figure! As usual, the weather has been the non-Shropshire topic of discussion on the office phone lines. This year, 2013, starts my sixth year as executive secretary of the American Shropshire Registry. It seems like just yesterday that I submitted a letter expressing interest to the search committee, never dreaming that it would really come to pass. Like any job, it has its good days and bad, but mostly good. I’ve made some great friends and seen some terrific sheep! Keep an eye out for the young go-getters of the Junior Shropshire Association. They are putting together the Starter Flock Program to put a youngster in the Shropshire business. Details and applications will be available from the office or on the Shropshire website. Help to promote this opportunity in the other breed circles. Maybe we can create some converts! These future Shropshire leaders will also be circulating at the sale in Eaton in May. As usual, they will be seeking donations to help cover the Shropshire awards at this year’s All-American Junior Show. They will also be offering chances on a 50/50 Raffle with the proceeds going to assist them with their activities for the year.Your help and support will be much appreciated. When you do your first registration work this year, I will return it with five raffle tickets to benefit the All-American Junior Show. There are three prizes at stake. First prize is $1000 cash. Second prize is a hydraulic

trimming stand. The third prize winner will receive an outdoor pop-up canopy. It is our hope that you will be able to support the show directly by purchasing or selling these tickets. A show of that caliber is very expensive to put on and your help is appreciated. Again, we appreciate your understanding and cooperation while efforts go toward keeping show ring Shropshires properly slickshorn to the knees and hocks. It is acknowledged that sometimes a fitter’s inexperience is the reason sheep may have a little extra fuzz. That being said, every effort will be made to assist those needing to learn the finer points of legs and heads. Experienced Shropshire fitters will be on hand at the sales this year as well as the major open and junior shows.   So what is new in the office? Well, I trekked to Louisville for the NAILE Sheep Advisory meeting early in March. As usual the big discussion was the length of the Junior Breeding Sheep Show. The 2012 Junior Shropshire exhibitors and their parents will remember the Sunday show that concluded on early Monday morning and the long trip home that followed. We have been assured that the sheep show staff is going to address this. Perhaps there will be four show rings. We also have tried to make it known that the NAILE Shropshire shows are a bit short of premiums and hope that there is a way that they can be raised. But, for the most part, we all agree that a show of that caliber with all of the livestock species is a huge task and we are thankful for all that the NAILE show venue provides. I have had a couple of inquiries in the office regarding the requirements for registering progeny of artificial inseminations and embryo transfers. We are in the 21st Century now and these practices are getting pretty common. We will be investigating the different options to determine what paper_______ Page 3

work might be needed. Until that is decided, anyone doing any of that kind of work this year should request documentation from the technician performing the procedure. Other than that there are no new issues on the registration desk. I am pleased to see how many early submissions I received to process papers for the two early sales. It probably won’t make much of a dent in the summer work so if you needed papers yesterday, please don’t wait until tomorrow

to send them in! When this issue is out, the 2013 Shropshire Spectacular Sale in Bloomington will be completed. There has been a fair amount of interest and I truly hope that it is successful. We’re hoping for a good Hoosier Sale in Tipton, Ind. on April 27 and a super National Sale in Ohio in May. For information on these sales, check out www.shropshires.org. Meanwhile, “Good Shropping to you all and I will see you in the spring!

Minutes of BOD Teleconference Sunday, Feb. 17 The meeting was called to order at 8 p.m. by President Brad Slutz. Also present were Jim Percival, Rick Adams, Darrell Dockter, Re Call, Alan Bruhin, Jim Gruenhagen, Bob Johnson, Tim Roberts, Cody Hiemke and Becky Peterson as secretary. Not attending were RJ Creamer, Sandy Cross, Norm Jackson and Bob Dinsmore. Secretary’s report – Nov. 2012 minutes previously sent and published in the February 2013 Voice. Bob Johnson moved and Darrell Dockter seconded to accept the report as published. Motion passed. Treasurer’s report – Final 2012 P&L, Balance Sheet had also been previously distributed and published. Rick Adams questioned the donation figure of $-150. Becky noted that it was a general donation and then moved to the futurity fund for the belt buckle but the adjustment had been duplicated. Jim Percival moved to accept the treasurer’s report and Rick seconded. Motion passed. NAILE premiums–As had been instructed at the Annual Meeting in November, the Board of Directors was to appoint a board member to accompany Becky to the Sheep Advisory meeting in March and suggest to NAILE that the open Shropshire premiums are not in line with some other breeds. Becky had produced a spreadsheet that

shows that the Shropshire show was the sixth largest in number of entries but 15th in the total amount of money offered per head entered. NAILE maintains that funding is very tight and additional funding would not be available. Lengthy discussion followed. Becky noted that the agenda at the NAILE meeting does not address each breeds premiums and that special requests are then forwarded to the NAILE Executive Committee and often denied. With the intention of making a more lasting impression on that committee, this BOD decided to draft a letter, including the spreadsheet, addressed to the management requesting that it reevaluate the premium distribution method and to request that NAILE fund entirely two February Ewe Lamb Classes in both the open and junior shows for a total increase of $595. Bob Johnson moved that the letter be drafted and a request made to meet with the NAILE executive by conference call. Rick Adams seconded and the motion passed. Indiana directorship – There is a committee in place of Sandy Cross, Carol Rueber, Cody Hiemke and Brad Slutz to review Indiana’s request for a second director and to recommend a method to go about redistricting in 2014 as is stated in the Bylaws. Becky had provided three years’ figures depicting the number of registrations and members per state and region. Committee is to discuss and report at the May Board meeting in Eaton, Ohio. 2013 NAILE Judge Nominations – Sugges-

tions were made from members/exhibitors in Louisville of open show judges. The two nominees with the most votes were Steve Taylor and Billy Wade. There was a tie for the third. A vote was taken at this time and the third nominee is Mark Johnson. Becky will submit this list with contact information to the NAILE management. Shropshire Store – Jim Percival is hoping to have this up and running by mid-March.

He will get the link to the website and will have something for the Voice also. National Sale plans – Board meeting plans were discussed. Decided to stay with the Friday schedule, about 45 minutes after the Shropshire show is completed on May 10. Jim & RJ will arrange for a location. Ewe preview will take place again on sale day morning. No other plans are firm at this time. Fund raising – Alan Bruhin is still working on a vacation package to sell at the Classic. Also would accept a couple of donated items to sell in lieu of baskets. Becky noted the Centerstage website ads will be sold at the beginning of the Classic sale. Rick asked if Cody had a report on the Genetic Study. There have been approximately 25 head across the breed submitted. No other business came before the Board. Jim Percival moved to adjourn at 8:59 p.m. Rick Adams seconded. Meeting was adjourned. Respectfully submitted, Becky Peterson

Put Your Flock on Center Stage One of the changes that is happening this year with the change of National Sale venues is the auction of the advertising opportunities on the homepage of the Shropshire website www.shropshires.org. In previous years it had been held at the beginning of the Spectacular Sale in Springfield, Ill. Now with the National Sale being held in Ohio, the chance to get in on this project will be in front of a new crowd. Shropshire Center Stage is the first thing viewed by visitors to the website, providing effective advertising and promotion for your flock. Purchasers of this exclusive space are encouraged to share with visitors to the site the story of their flock, including family notes, winnings, etc. Up to four photos may be included. Proceeds from the sale of this advertising go to support the promotional efforts in the Voice and on Shropshires.org This auction will be held at the beginning of the Classic Shropshire Sale in Eaton, Ohio on May 11. Twelve months will be available starting with August 2013 and ending with July 2014. The highest bidder will win the month of his or her choice until all of the months have been sold. The minimum bid is $75 and the sky is the limit after that. If you cannot attend this sale, all is not lost. Submit your bid through the secretary or another breeder attending the sale. Pay-

ment must be made to the ASRA that day. Owners will be reminded in advance of their month so materials can be submitted to Rinda Maddox, website coordinator. Be in attendance at the National Shropshire Sale in Eaton, Ohio on May 11 and be ready for the spirited bidding to secure one of these spaces. Put yourself and your flock on “Shropshire Center Stage”!

Shropshire Voice Mailing Policy The Shropshire Voice will be mailed, normally by first class mail, to all ASRA members (defined in the bylaws as having paid annual dues in two of the past three years). This includes junior members. Membership or subscription status is noted on the upper right portion of the mailing label. Non-members may subscribe to the Voice for an annual subscription fee of $15 or $5 per issue. Special requests will be handled on an individual basis at the discretion of the editor and/or publisher. The Shropshire Voice is the official publication of the American Shropshire Registry Association and the only magazine published by, for and about the American Shropshire Sheep.

HHH Stars of Louisville Save the date: November 16, 2013 Plans are underway for the Fifth Annual Stars of Louisville Shropshire Sale. The sale committee includes Randy Rife, chair; Jim Brandt, Bob Johnson, Dennis Avery and Manager Becky Peterson. Breeders are encouraged to offer one to two elite females. Entry forms will be available by August 1 from the ASRA office or on www.shropshires.org and are due by September 1. Entry fees will remain at $50 per head to ensure quality. Fitting Tips During the Shropshire Spectacular in 2010, a few youth assembled for a special activity. Gary Brockmann of Garden Prairie, Ill. gave a brief but very detailed demonstration of fitting the heads and legs of Shropshire sheep. Gary emphasized that the fitting of slick shorn Shrops does not end at the knees, hocks and heads. He said that the key ingredient of success in these areas depends on the carding, just like on a fitted animal. One should card every last knot of wool out of the head and legs for a better result. He recommends that the Shrop head be trimmed so as to smoothly blend the wool cap from the upper part of the muzzle to a high point on the crown and then back to a minimal amount of wool just behind the poll or between the ears. The wool cap should also be blended from the side over the eyes to the center. He says the maximum amount of wool left on the top of the head should

knots, clumps and tags should be removed but enough wool should be left on the legs to see that there is wool. A wire slicker brush works well to pull all of the fiber in the same direction. The wool left on the legs can then be trimmed to enhance the correct structure of the leg. A cow-hocked animal should have wool left on the outside of the hocks. A wide hocked sheep would be better if trimmed on the outside and a little

wool left on the inside of the joint. Front legs should be attended to in the same manner. In either case, the border of wool at the knee or hock should be blended so that the wool did not end abruptly but does not extend above the joint. These finishing touches will go a long way toward the appearance of one’s favorite animal in the show ring. Thank you very much, Gary, for your help and support!

Hello! My name is RJ Creamer and I’m your newest director from Ohio. I have been married to my lovely wife, Diane, for 28 years and we have three children, Monica, Molly and RJ, Jr. Molly and I started out the Shropshire business with a leased flock from Tim Barnes in 1998. Two years of showing Tim’s Shrops and we were hooked! In 2000 we started our program with a yearling ewe from Tim and one from Randy Rife. We have been in expansion mode since this time. We went from two ewes in 2000 up to 62 ewes with the McCabes, then back down to our current size of 25 mature ewes. We try to grow out five or six replacement ewes a year. Molly is out on her own now, but still comes home to help me show, and of course give all the advice she can. I like the Shropshire breed, but most of all I like the Shropshire people. We do most of our traveling to shows and sales with the Bryants, McCabes and Islers. If you see me at a show or sale and need to talk Shrops just give me a shout and I’ll see what I can do to help! Feel free to call or come see us in good ol’ Prospect, Ohio. Keep in mind when you get up our way there are a lot of good Shropshire sheep and people just a short drive away!

A look at Shropshire History By Don Knepp Guest Historian

What is your

A few weeks ago Randy Rife, our ASRA Historian, and I were talking about – what else – Shropshires. We were discussing his need for pictures for the upcoming Voice history article that he writes. I mentioned that my wife, Suzanne LaFollette had in 2006 purchased on Ebay for my Christmas present, 52 issues of the English Flock books going back to 1887. These issues were sold by apparently an old English breeder, Brookfield Farms. From that comment a path started wherein I copied some pictures from these flock books and sent them to Randy, Rinda and Cody Hiemke, who along with Fred Groverman, maintains an English Shropshire connection. Randy liked them, but said he was so busy with lambing, why don’t I write

_______ Page 30

an article and include a few of the pictures. I said I would be happy to write something up. Then after Emailing Cody and Fred, an uneasy feeling kind of overcame me, why am I writing this, there are people who know a lot more about Shropshires than I do. So I started out my research by re-reading the history articles in the Voice from the past two years. I realized by doing that, that I really am a scanner, not a reader, because when I really read the articles I learned a number of things that had escaped me before. Then I was looking through the Shropshire stacks in my study and found the Shropshire story “The First 100 Years” all 66 pages, written in 1984 by Doug Chambers. Apparently, I had just scanned that also, as

_________________________ Shropshire Voice May 2013

there was a lot that was new to me. Along with believing that history is a lot

the beginning of two looks, maybe some breeders possibly catering to what was going on in the U.S. and some not.

Connection?

more interesting when you make it personal, I realized that my connection is a lot deeper than I had realized. Just as an aside, if you do not have a copy or have not read “The First 100 Years” you need to beg, borrow, steal, or get Becky to make some more copies along with maybe a push to the ASRA Board to get the 125th version written. The exercise of looking through some 130 years of history in the English Flock books provides a lot of perspective. The flock books seem to have one to three pictures each for the period 1887 through 1956. After that period there were no pictures until the 2004 issue. I started by sampling periods, scanning the following pictures; three for 1893, two for 1913, one for 1923, one for 1943, one for 1951 and two for 1954. Eventually I narrowed it down to five pictures. I have to make a few comments at this point because in scanning these pictures a number of things jumped out at me. First, it is interesting to me how soon after the breed association started, that the extreme woolliness got established, see the 1893 and 1913 pictures. Secondly, the 1923 picture shows a continuation of the closed face look but in a sense would appear to be as one goes forward through the books _________________________ Shropshire Voice May 2013

It is interesting to me that even through the two World Wars, the size of the books continued more or less unabated. The thinnest book is 1933, in the middle of the worldwide depression. After taking the overview of 1887 to 1956 it became apparent to me that the period following WWII was a major transition period for type with the English Shrops. A late 1940’s ad for prominent English breeder A.E. Everall of Sherlowe shown on page 45 of “The First 100 Years,” says “Two types are now being bred at Sherlowe and are being maintained in separate flocks. A medium-sized sheep, deep-bodied and short on the leg, with a dense fleece, is bred for export. A dark bare-faced sheep with a big frame covered with fine quality wool, is bred primarily for the Home Trade and is

_______ Page 31

increasing in popularity.”   Mr. Everall, along with J. Gibson Whittles and John M. Belcher, appear from show winner picture inclusion in the Flock books to be the prominent breeders during this transitional time. It is also apparent from the pictures that Belcher had the most open-headed sheep, especially his 1951 ewe picture. It is also interesting that the ewe pictures for all breeders tend to be more open-headed and upstanding while rams tended to be more closed-faced and exhibit more thickness of type. Rams also appear to be much more important in the number of pictures with ram pictures running at about a 2:1 ratio to ewe pictures. The 1954-1955 books highlight the Ram “Tern Cambridge 16809” (see picture) bred by J. Gibson Whittles and imported by F.M. Shulz in 1954. Mr. Shulz also imported two other rams at that time bred by Whittles, more famous in the U.S. “Sir Winston” and his sire, REA #19. This period is what Doug Chambers refers to as “the second coming,” i.e. the second and smaller period of im-

_______ Page 32

portation compared to the earlier 1890 to 1910 period, “the first coming.” This second period led to the open faced Shropshires we have today. It has been enlightening to me to follow the transitions from the beginning in 1883 to date. One of our association presidents, W. C. Coffey, was a strong believer in the people-side of our breed, feeling that a strong sense of community was essential to the strength of our efforts. In reading “The First 100 Years” one gets a sense of so many prominent people who have led our breed. Nine breeders of Shropshire sheep, seven having been association presidents, are part of the Hall Of Fame Portrait Gallery which was originally in the Stockyard Inn in Chicago and now are hung in Louisville, Ky. at the NAILE. In a way it is a little ironic that my own flock in its first stage, 1953-1968, basically started on the eve of the so-called “second coming.” We, like many breeders at that time, moved back and forth between types a couple of times in search of what would win at

the shows. Our first ram from Dubes was a small woolly headed meaty ram; our second ram, a Glasgow sire, was relatively open-headed and big; our third ram, a JJ Merrick sire, was little and very woolly. Next we bought an Eberspacher sire who was a large woolly-head type, and produced the winner that Ernie Rotter liked. Our sixth ram from R.C. Thurman was very open-headed, and the final ram for that period, before we sold out to Enid

_______ Page 33

Schlipf, was a McKerrow English type ram. That was seven rams of what I would view as three distinct types in 16 years. In the more recent period, 1985 to date, in our breeding program we have had to deal with what Doug Chambers called “The Black Knight,” the domination of the sheep industry that started with the big Suffolks and changed the industry into a chase for the tallest animal in the show ring. That chase ended none too soon. In looking through all of this material, the Flock books and the book written by Doug Chambers, I realized that my extended family and myself have been fortunate to rub shoulders with a significant period of Shropshire history and prominent breeders from 1953 to date. Everett Glasgow judged my first show at the Tazewell County fair in 1954, Doug Chambers sites him as one of the pillars of the breed. Ernie Rotter and Ken Jorstad, former ASRA presidents, named some of our sheep as champions or reserve in 1964, 1993 and 1995 at the Illinois and

Wisconsin State Fairs. Kent Flora, another ASRA president, competed against us in the junior shows at the Illinois State Fair. For me, another connection to Shropshires is the International Livestock Show and the Stockyards Inn at Chicago. The idea of the American Shropshire Association was hatched at the Chicago Fat Stock Show in 1883 and many of the association annual meetings were held in Chicago at the Stockyards Inn prior to 1976. My first exposure to the International was our family being part of a 1956 Illinois Shropshire Association Carlot lamb entry. There were 50 lambs contributed by many breeders from Illinois, C Knepp and Sons were part of it. Later, through FFA, being part of the Collegiate Judging Team from SIU in 1964, and then moving to Chicago to be a cattle trader at the Chicago Mercantile Exchange in 1970 my love for the Stockyards Inn and its steaks grew. It was a very sad day when it was torn down in the late 70’s.

~ In Memory ~ ANNETTE A. MENHENNETT Annette Menhennett, 86, who owned a sheep farm in Chester County, Penn. and was involved in charitable work in Africa, died Nov. 30, 2012, at home. Mrs. Menhennett was born in Minneapolis, Minn. and was raised in Marshal, Minn. After graduating from the University of Minnesota she moved to West Chester where she worked for the Girl Scouts. She continued her education at the Drexel Graduate School of Library Science. She met her future husband, Warn Menhennett, on a blind date where they discovered they shared the same birthday. They married in 1956 and lived in West Chester for a number of years. In the early 1960’s they lived in India for two years where Mr. Menhennett’s engineering position with Wyeth had taken them. Mrs. Menhennett had an interest in developing libraries and was appointed by Governor Lawrence to the Governor’s Advisory Council on Library Development. For a time, she was President of Pennsylvania Library Association, Trustees Division and she was a member of the Executive Committee and Board of Directors of the Pennsylvania Library Association. She was also a member of the American Library Association. From 1965 to 1971 she was on the Chester County Library Board of Trustees. Throughout her life, Mrs. Menhennett had an interest in politics. She worked as Precinct Committee Woman for West Fallowfield Township and was a member of the Executive Committee of the Chester County Democratic Party. She was a past President of the League of Women Voters. In 1965 Mr. and Mrs. Menhennett purchased land in Southern Chester County where they built a home and a working _______ Page 36

sheep farm. Work on the farm was driven by Mrs. Menhennett’s love of nature and the outdoors. The farm had over 100 ewes and was her full time occupation. Mrs. Menhennett was a West Fallowfield Township Supervisor for a number of years. She worked to preserve farm land and open space throughout the township and Pennsylvania. Mrs. Menhennett enjoyed a wide range of activities. She raised hunting Beagles and Border Collies. She enjoyed cheese making, tennis, painting, playing the piano and organ, hunting and writing. Mrs. Menhennett’s largest philanthropic work was in Africa. Always interested in the rights of women, Mrs. Menhennett traveled to Ghana in the late 1990’s to support a project opposing mutilation of women. During a second trip, she traveled to the Ivory Coast where she met Naomi SIE and helped fund her women’s clinic, Coeur de Femmes. On a third trip, Mrs. Menhennett worked in the Ivory Coast to translate the Bible into tribal languages. She is survived by her niece and nephew and their families. A Memorial Service was held Dec. 11 at The Church of the Open Door, Kennett Square, Penn. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to “The Field Service Fund,” Penn Vet New Bolton Center, 382 West Street Road, Kennett Square, PA 19348 (610-925-6180). Peaceful Passing

Do not weep, Dear loved ones of mine. This place is beyond beauty, And I am doing fine! I know it was hard to let me go To come to this place that you do not know. It was hard for me to leave you all, But each of us must answer our Master’s call. I am at peace and free from pain. And someday we’ll all be together again. Hold my memory close and dear And let my love for you dry each tear.

of raising Shropshires and the many friends I have made through the years. I will always remember all the trips from Massachusetts to California showing sheep and meeting Shropshire breeders throughout the country. Many people I met along the way not only were role models to me but helped shape our breed to what we have today. Some of those people include Everett and Libby Glasgow, Emil Hartzell, Vern Hoffman, Doug Chambers and the McKerrow family. There were many changes with Mike and the breed in my 55 years including the change from the short closed faced sheep from when I started. We used to have to take hand shears around their eyes so they could see and not run into stuff. The size of the sheep also changed drastically from the time I started to today. I think
