From the President I hope everyone has had a great lambing season. Spring is just around the corner and I know everyone is beginning to think about the spring sale season. There will be many opportunities for all of us to market quality Shropshires soon. Please remember to

nominate your ewes for the futurity program in the sales. We all benefit from this program and our youth have great opportunities by virtue of this program. Please remember to take the time to mentor a new shepherd this season. When we bring new people into the breed we all win. ASRA President, Jim Percival

From the Secretary “Hello” from the Shropshire office in 2016. Spring does not officially arrive for a while yet but it sure is spring-like this week. Our New England winter was very mild compared to recent years. We had two snowfalls of four inches and a couple of other dustings. There was also some ice and plenty of rain. I usually like winter but was grateful this year that we did not enjoy our usual snowfall. The Shropshire office is gearing up for a busy registration season. In most cases, I expect to have registrations and transfers on their way back to the breeders within three days of receipt in the office. Delays would be caused by incomplete or conflicting information on the applications. If there is more than one Shropshire owner in the family, please take a few minutes to double check the ownership of the dam of the lambs you are registering to make sure the owner of the lambs owns the mother. Frequently Dad transfers a yearling ewe to a son to show and then forgets to transfer her back. She lambs and Dad really wants to keep the lamb for himself but comes to find that the lamb will be owned by the son because that’s who still owns the mother. Simply stated, the registered owner of the ewe when she lambs is the registered owner of her lambs. This is definitely the most common cause for questions on my end as I have to verify who the owner is to be before I can complete the process. The other common issue is that people will mistakenly use the wrong dam on an application. I plug her in only to find that she has already lambed a month earlier and I have to have the applicant sort this out before I can move forward. Also, if you’re registering lambs that have been conceived through the new technology of artificial insemination or embryo transfer, please make a note of it on your registration application. Our new software can keep track of it and I’ll feel better registering 10 lambs out of one ewe _______ Page 4

born over a week’s time. Please double check your sires and dams and Q’s and R’s. Perhaps a little extra care in the farm record keeping might help reduce some of the spats after sheep are sold. Sometimes I feel that I’m being horribly meticulous but these are the registry records and I am paid to have them right. When you send in your dues payment with your first work of the year, I will return five AAJS raffle tickets that I hope you will consider purchasing. The proceeds will go directly to the All-American Junior Show which is a very expensive show to run. There are three prizes again this year: $1000 cash, a Sydell Hydraulic Fitting Stand ($530 value) and a Kindle HD Fire 7 ($130 value). Return the purchased stubs to the show in Michigan or send them to me in the office and I will make sure they get put in the drawing. Thank you to everyone who has been supportive of our youth programs. We’ve held two fundraisers already this year and we appreciate the generosity and support for the Starter Flock and the All-American Junior Show. Of course there will still be campaigns to fund the scholarship awards, Shropshire website and the Junior Association. We’re all supporters of the Shropshire juniors in the end and I invite everyone to join in. I will say I was pleased to open the February issue of the Voice and read the article about Shropshire Breed Type. There is a wide spectrum in today’s Shropshires and I am anticipating some productive and honest discussion among our breeders. Variations in traits are important if there are to be changes made but we need conversations and meetings of the minds in order to determine what the Shrop of 2016, and beyond, is supposed to look like and produce like. Our juniors and other newcomers need to be educated in identifying these traits and breeding for improvement in this area. Perhaps __________________ Shropshire Voice

a few breeders might even submit some photos depicting desirable characteristics as well as ones that may be criticized. So how about it? Take a few pictures of things you like about your favorite Shropshire head and equal number of one you don’t like and email them to me, Shropsec@hotmail.com. Perhaps the Breed Type Committee can display them in an anonymous venue and we can have conversation. What can it hurt? I have had a few inquiries over the winter from people looking to purchase their first Shropshires. I frequently refer them to the Breeders Index that appears in the Voice and on the website. If you keep up your status in the index, I have tried to help your cause. If you chose not to enlist or renew, your flock didn’t get one more bit of exposure. Please try to renew your Breeders Index listing

every year. I keep track which month you are due in and try to let you know when you are running close. The proceeds go to support the expense of the Shropshire website and the Voice and your participation is appreciated. I expect there will be lots of good sheep offered at the spring sales. There will have been two or three private online sales and two or three open consignment sales already. We will still see Shrops offered at four other sales this spring and summer. Many of these sheep will be futurity-nominated and will go on and do great things for their young owners. No sooner will sale season finish and the state and local fairs get underway. I hope to be able to get to a Midwest Show this year and take in the festivities. I look forward to seeing some good Shropshires and their people over the coming spring and summer.

Welcome!

Darin and Kim Merveldt & Family to the big “Shropshire Family.”

Darin was a Shropshire breeder, got out some 30 years ago and wants back in as their grandkids approach 4-H age. He selected eight of these March and April yearling ewes along with a powerful fall ram lamb by Madness. With this base they are certainly off and running in the right direction.

17th Annual Shropshire Classic to host National Show and Sale If you like Shropshires, be part of the National Sale in Eaton, Ohio on May 13 and 14 where the Shropshire Classic continues the 2016 sale season during the Big Ohio Sale weekend. This event is sponsored by the Ohio Shropshire Sheep Association and is run by Banner Sale Management. All sheep will be shown slick-shorn, of course, and will be guaranteed “spider-free” (genotype NN). All sheep will be either QR or RR. All yearling rams and fall ram lambs will be accompanied by a negative Elisa test for B. ovis. Consignors will each have the option of selling half interest in one yearling ram. This allows some of the best yearling rams around to become available! These rams and the arrangements will be announced on the sale block before they are sold. Auctioneers Gary Saylor, Danny Westlake, both of Ohio and Billy MacCauley of Pennsylvania will sell the sale. Show day will begin on Friday, May 13 at 8 a.m. Shropshires will show as the third breed in the Expo Building. Aaron Crome of Illinois will serve as judge. Ewes will show first, starting with the older classes. Classes are available for yearling ewes and rams, fall ewe and ram lambs, early January ewe lambs, late January ewe, January ram lambs, early February ewe lambs, late February ewe lambs, February ram lambs. As part of the effort to promote and educate about Shropshire breed character, the judge will select the best breed character ram and ewe from all of the Shrops shown. These two sheep will sell immediately after the grand champion and reserve grand champion rams and ewes in the sale order. The two sheep selected will each receive a full page ad in the next Voice. The Ohio Shropshire Association is sharing the expense of this endeavor with the ASRA. This addition to the show is a step in the right direction in preserving the character of the Shropshire sheep. Board member RJ Creamer is organizing an

informal gathering and social hour on Friday evening. The Ohio Shropshire Association is co-sponsoring light snacks and beverages. All Shropshire breeders, consignors and prospective buyers are welcome to attend. It will be a good place and opportunity to talk about Shrops and enjoy their people. The Shropshire Preview returns at 9:30 a.m. on sale day, on Saturday. All ewes will be displayed in the racks by class and in the order they were placed. Buyers will have the opportunity to personally inspect their selections. An informal social gathering will be ongoing during the preview. At this time, the Centerstage auction will take off. This is where any interested Shropshire breeder can purchase a month’s advertising on the homepage of the Shropshire website. The Shropshires will sell third in the order on May 14.There will be an excellent selection of rams and ewes offered. Sheep purchased at this sale have had a history of going on and doing well for their new owners. Futuritynominated lambs and yearlings will be offered and will be marked with an “F” on their back and on the sale order. Please contact the Shropshire office or visit www.shropshires. org with any questions regarding either of the 2016 Ewe Futurity Programs. And as usual, fundraising must go on throughout the event. We invite supporters to collaborate to bring a basket of interesting items from their state to be sold in a Silent Auction format to benefit the Shropshire College Scholarship fund. Several other breeds will be selling at this sale on the same grounds on Saturday. There should be ample transportation available to several areas of the country if you are unable to attend in person. For a catalog, contact The Banner at (309) 785-5058 or see www.bannersheepmagazine.com. Contact R.J. Creamer at (740) 262-3972 regarding other Shropshire aspects of the event. See you there! _______ Page 7

Update On Futurity Program

Please note that the Futurity program has updated the point scoring method. It had become evident that the former method of assigning points to Futurity Ewe Lambs and Yearling Ewes was producing some tie scores and possibly didn’t weight lambs placing well in very large classes. The Futurity Committee has changed the point scale as follows:

FUTURITY POINT SCALE (NOTE: New scale in 2016) for both ewe lambs and yearling ewes Placing in Class

amount. Settlement checks will be issued to consignors and transferred papers to buyers within 30 days of the sale. The 2015 sale reported an average of $851.92 on 13 head. Spectacular Sale The Spectacular Sale continues this year June 17-18 in Springfield, Ill. at the state fairgrounds. The show will be held on Friday. Ohio’s Matt Martin will judge. The sale will start at approximately 10:30 on Saturday. Bill MacCauley will sell, as before. This means there are a lot of transportation opportunities for sheep to be bought and sold. Illinois Shropshire Association president, Rick Adams, reports there are plans for a junior show again. Classes are for ram lambs, yearling ewes, fall ewe lambs and spring ewe lambs. Classes may be split if entries warrant. This show will take place during the show for the sale sheep. Juniors interested in participating should contact Illinois secretary Stacy

Josefson, (309) 371-4260 or sjosefson@bluebullets.org. Like the sale on Facebook, Illinois Shropshire Spectacular Sale.

Shropshire folks attend this event, too. The sale is managed with new enthusiasm this year by the Heartland Livestock Services, Curt Overcash and crew, and runs from June 22 to 27 on the Missouri State Fairgrounds. Entry deadline is May 5 for the printed catalog which will be sent out by June 1. Shropshires will be judged Wed., June 24 after the speckle-faced wethers and before the Club Lambs. Teleconference minutes The ASRA Board of Director’s meeting was called to order at 8:02 EST on Sunday, Feb. 21, 2016. Present were Jim Percival. Brad Slutz, Rick Adams, R.J. Creamer, Re Call, Cody Hiemke, Mandy Swartz, Matthew Anderson, Mike Elsbury, Danny Rogers, Jim Gruenhagen, Darrel Dockter and Alan Bruhin. Bob Dinsmore and Mary Anne Keck did not attend. The minutes of the November NAILE Board meeting were previously emailed. Danny Rogers moved to accept them as distributed. RJ Creamer seconded. Motion passed. Treasurer’s Report – Becky Peterson had emailed the end of 2015 Balance Sheet and Profit & Loss reports and noted they had also been printed in the Voice. Jim Percival asked about a negative $80 in the miscellaneous income category. Becky investigated it and reported that it represented AAJS raffle tickets purchased by ASRA members along with their other work. Payment was then made to AAJS. Becky would correct the way that this is presented in the future. Becky noted that the

total loss of $2889.03 was $95.81 greater than reported in the Voice due to the omission of the expense for the virus protection contract for the office computers. R.J. Creamer moved with a second from Rick Adams to accept the treasurer’s report. Motion passed. Fund Raising – Thank you to Re Call for gathering sponsorships for the AAJS class awards. Becky noted that MWSRS will no longer be remitting the 1% of the Shropshire gross unless it is a national sale. Previously this income had been applied to the scholarship fund. Last year’s amount was over $300 so it means more fund-raising should be done for this area. Discussion followed about asking Banner Management for 1% of the Shropshire Classic Sale. Since entry forms and information are already available, it was decided to make the request for the 2017 and beyond sales. Becky is planning on a silent auction at the Classic Sale for the scholarship fund. Futurity Points – Rick Adams had distributed the Futurity Committee’s revision to the Point Scale as directed by the BOD last November. It essentially offers two scales based on the number of entries in a class. If there are 10 or less in a class, the points would start at 10 points for first and go to one point for 10th. With 11 or more in a class, points would start at 15 for first and on down to one point for 15th and every place thereafter. This revision is in attempt to eliminate tie scores. Class winners and large classes would receive more points than before. The revision originally was intended for just the ewe lamb futurity. Rick Adams moved with a second from Danny

Rogers to adopt the revision to the futurity point scale and also apply it to the Yearling Ewe Futurity in 2016. No further discussion. Motion passed. Becky will add it to the futurity rules, have it posted on the website and also email it to the members. NAILE Judge Nominations–Becky reported on the results of the nomination of judges for the 2016 NAILE Open Show. Paid members nominated the following: Bill Bryant (7), Jeff Poynter (5), Tom WIllwerth (5), Alan Bruhin (2), Dale Davis (2), Mark Johnson (2), Dan Spilde, Sam Wiford, Kyle Thayer, Jeff Ebert, Rod Crome (one point each). The BOD voted to submit the top three to the NAILE staff in that order. NAILE makes the contacts. National Sale – RJ Creamer reported on the upcoming Classic Sale. RJ and Cody Hiemke will coordinate a social hour on Friday evening. The ewe preview will be held on Sat., May 14 at 9:30. Aaron Crome will judge. RJ has requested in writing to Banner Sale Management to hold a separate best breed type class for rams and ewes. Each consignor will be able to bring one entry to each class. Breed Type – The committee was instructed to meet after the NAILE meeting. Mary Anne Keck had talked about getting photos of various heads. RJ feels the breed standards still need updating. The committee was instructed to meet prior to the May board meeting. Starter Flock – Alan Bruhin has the applications distributed to all of the state extension offices. Becky reported that $1350 has been pledged so far but still slightly short of the goal. Becky will email an application and a second funding request to all members. The question remains about the eligibility of applicants who already have Shropshires. It was decided to leave this decision up to the selection committee consisting of Alan Bruhin, RJ Creamer, Mandy Swartz, Jim Gruenhagen and Rick Adams. Alan moved to add junior association president Rylie Miller. Seconded by Danny Rogers. So moved 2016 National Show – Becky reported that the Big E had sent a Shropshire premium list. Jeff Repasky will judge. Re Call and Elaine _______ Page 16

Jaycox are working on sponsorships for the class awards. Becky is looking into options for a dinner/annual meeting venue for Saturday evening. Information will be sent to board members when available. Also will need to arrange for a board meeting, probably offsite as before. Regional Youth Funding requests – Becky asked to confirm the various regions’ youth funding needs. Illinois, Ohio, New England/ New York, Pennsylvania & South, South West and Indiana regions will each use $300 for a total of $1800. North Central and Michigan/ Wisconsin don’t usually fund anything. West District used allotment in 2015. Committee assignments – 2016 committee list had been distributed. Discussion followed with a few changes made. 2016 Committees assigned and will be posted. Midwest Elite Sale – Jim Percival relayed information from Dan Willoughby on new Midwest Elite Sale (April 30, Richmond, Ind.) He is willing to pay 1% of the Shropshire gross to the ASRA for a member mailing list. Jim will have sale management contact the office. Past Futurity awards – Becky reported that 2015 and 2014 Futurity winners were inquiring about acknowledgement awards. Discussion followed. Danny Roger moved with a second from Mandy Swartz to provide plaques for yearling ewe winner, overall ewe lamb and regional ewe lambs. Motion passed. NAILE meeting – Becky reported that the NAILE Sheep Advisory meeting has not been scheduled but expects that it will be in March. Alan and Danny both said they would be willing to attend, depending on their schedules, if Becky couldn’t.When the meeting is announced Becky will contact them both. Next meeting to be held with National Sale in Eaton, Ohio. Decided to try to schedule for 2:30 Friday afternoon, May 13. RJ or Jim would arrange a location. With no other business to come before the board, RJ Creamer moved to adjourn with a second from Mike Elsbury. Motion passed. Meeting adjourned at 9:20 p.m. Respectfully Submitted, Becky Peterson __________________ Shropshire Voice

Response for Flock Starters has been great The Starter Flock Program is in its third year in Shropshire world. You may recall receiving an email or two from Rylie Miller, the President of the National Junior Shropshire Sheep Association, or Alan Bruhin, the ASRA Vice-President and junior motivator. They were seeking contributions to support a grant of $1500 to be awarded to this year’s Starter Flock winner. The response was almost immediate and very generous. The ASRA is very appreciative of the following members for coming forward to support this program: Chip Hallet, Sterling, Mass.; Knepp Shropshires, North Barrington, Ill.; Alan Bruhin, Sevierville, Tenn.; Jim and Denise Percival, Xenia, Ohio; Danny and Cynthia Rogers, Monrovia, Ind.; Rick Adams, Chebanse, Ill.; Emily Washburn, Gouverneur, N.Y.; Plainview Farms, Doug, Tammy and Chris Whittaker, Laura, Ill.; JN Dirlam and Sons and Matt Dirlam, Mooresville, Ind.; Isler Shropshires, Prospect, Ohio; and Kevin Klotz and Family, Richmond, Ind. Perhaps most remarkable during all this turmoil was her sense of civility and diplomacy to all the disparate factions as they interacted with the Lafayette office. Unfailingly kind and generous of her time with all who came in contact with her, it speaks well for everyone who registered sheep during that time that there were never any requests for her to step down. A great pleasure in her life was her membership in The Sweet Adeline’s singing group and I am sure that was a definite way of relieving her stress and tension! Although the photo at left might suggest otherwise, Jessie Ritenour was a warm and compassionate person who was a very enjoyable companion, both Jessie Ritenour gives the Champion Ram across the board table and the dinner award to Kent Flora at the Indiana State Fair table. far from the Lafayette office. One of the worstkept secrets of the Illinois show was that every year my best friend and fellow Shropshire breeder, Ralph Livengood, and I would buy the largest watermelon we could find and, over the course of the fair, infuse the melon with a fifth of vodka. After the show ended, we would invite breeders and friends to our pens where we would cut the melon and enjoy its “unique” flavor. One particular year Mrs. R was at the fair, which presented a problem as she was a teetotaler and we weren’t sure how to not invite her to the festivities. We ended up solving the problem by NOT solving the problem – we invited her and said nothing. At the end of the show, we all gathered ’round the melon and Ralph did the slicing. Mrs. R said she would like a piece, so Ralph gave her one and served the rest of us. By that time we had a nice crowd. I was eating my piece and Mrs. R was doing serious damage to hers. A couple of minutes passed. Mrs. R got a big smile on her face and said,“You know, I believe that was the best watermelon I ever tasted! I believe I’ll have another!” No matter how hard the board worked, or how much Mrs. R economized, by 1970 there was no realistic way to continue association operations in Lafayette. That location had been our home since 1884 and Mrs. R was the heart of it all. An exceptionally generous offer from Everett and Elizabeth Glasgow was made to relocate to Monticello, Ill. and that offer was gratefully accepted by the board. All of us on the board at that time was relieved and happy to learn that Mrs. Ritenour had immediately accepted a position with the American Yorkshire Club, with offices in the same building. The hard work of Jessie Ritenour paved the way for a new renaissance of Shropshires under Everett and Libby Glasgow and we shall forever be in the debt of this great lady. The topic of breed type dominated our association during Mrs. R’s tenure and caused almost irreparable differences among the membership. To make a small joke, it wasn’t a matter of life and death – it was more than that! I will never forget sitting at the board table with a _______ Page 42

gentleman who could (and did) talk for hours about the importance of the color of the nose of the “ideal” Shropshire. “Appearance” (I’m not going to use the word “type” here) became a hot topic once again in the 1970s. Some individuals took it upon themselves to modify the size and appearance of their flocks by, shall we say, creativity and imagination when selecting breeding stock. Over the years, dilution of established bloodlines has led to the extreme differences we see among flocks today. So, the path to uniformity remains elusive and increasingly difficult. What, then, can today’s breeders hope to accomplish for the betterment of our beloved Shropshire breed? I might suggest start by learning from – and getting to better know– one another as people rather than only competition. When I began my Shropshire enterprise in 1959 and then my first showing at the Illinois State Fair in 1961, that show alone meant a 10-day commitment at the fairgrounds. Ample time was available to get to know my competitors first as breeders, then as friends. Watching them interact as members of society, with other breeders, how they prepared to exhibit their animals, was a deeply enriching experience Today’s necessity of fairground arrival, exhibition, and hitting the road leaves virtually little time beyond conducting business. I am not advocating going back to the old days. What I am advocating is becoming more creative about interacting with your fellow breeders, either professionally or socially. Whatever it will take to identify common goals and then working together to achieve them will suffice. If, as a group, Shropshire breeders realize the uniformity of the goals we wish to achieve, is it not then within the realm of possibility that over time, more uniformity might result in the animals we produce? No way could this be interpreted as a short term goal. It has to be ongoing and generational ... with no short cuts. When we grow to recognize that the lives of our fellow breeders and their goals are not much different from our own, then perhaps once again breed type can move to a center uniformity of which we can all be proud. __________________ Shropshire Voice

Look for these two falls at the Classic National Sale

This ewe is sired by Fritz 0144, her dam is Avery 09-09, an Avery “Juice daughter purchased from first Stars of Louisville sale. She is a maternal sister to the yearling fall ram that was purchased by RoKaJo Shrops at the 2015 Classic.

This ram is sired by Mrozinski 12-10 and dam is a Bechtold ewe. He is a very stylish showring-look type of ram that will be a great purchase for a stud ram.
