From the President Hopefully, everyone is having a only possible with the support great spring season. Before long we of our breeders. So, Thank You! will be ready for the 2018 show to everyone who takes the time season. I know that winter seemed effort and resources to contribute especially long this year. We are to this great program. I know looking forward to seeing everyone that there is also lots of support and excitement surrounding our at the National Sale in Eaton, Ohio Starter Flock program. Thank you or another sale this spring. Our Shropshire Futurity to everyone who supports this.   Hopefully, we will see all of you program continues to grow and I Jim Percival this spring and summer. Please want to take a moment to thank everyone who nominated ewe lambs and remember to take the time to mentor a new yearlings for the program. The Futurity is Shropshire breeder. It is only by bringing new one of the reasons that young people are people into our “flock” that we will remain so enthusiastic about Shropshires and it is viable and successful. Have Fun!

Thanks, again, to Chad Waterman

Chad once again bought out our flock. He purchased our mature flock in 2014, but our grandkids continued to show a few lambs we had kept and soon we were back up to 18 head. Thanks, again, Chad for purchasing our mature flock again in 2018.

From the Secretary Here we are beginning a new show and sale season again. It seems like it was just yesterday that we did this last year. Time sure flies when you are busy. As of this writing in March, the office work is picking up with the recording of many fall and January born lambs. I am excited that registration stats are improving a little each year because it shows that breeders have confidence in their flocks and the increase in transfers shows that folks want to get new pieces to add to their own programs. There is activity in the junior programs, as well. The Starter Flock applications are coming in and this year’s winner will be chosen and introduced in May, as well as the new court of Shropshire Royalty. And, hopefully, the right person will be interested in the future of these programs to take on the job as Junior Coordinator and be able to commit a little time to the Shropshire kids. I know there are college-bound youngsters who should be applying for academic scholarships. All of these programs are “door-openers” to future opportunities in this world. We encourage the kids’ participation in these activities and the support for them from our members.Without all of the contributions and support, we would soon run out of funds and these important activities would end. It looks as though the Shropshire Store will finally come to fruition! Board member Re Call and I are working with a local apparel printing company to make and sell a few Shroppy clothing items. Details are still quite incomplete at this writing but it is our hope that we will have a selection of items for sale or pickup at the National Sale in Eaton. After that, during specified and advertised times, interested people will be able to go to the Shropshire website, www.shropshires.org, and link directly with our “store” to order from the selection available. More information will be posted on the website and Facebook _______ Page 4

page as it gets firmed up and members will be notified by email when sales will be happening. That is long awaited good news! Several sales are scheduled for the spring season and all should have available futuritynominated ewe lambs and yearling ewes. The Illini All Breeds Sale will have been completed on April 7; Indiana Premier and Midwest Elite Sales, both in Indiana, will likely be in the books already. The National Sale is May 11 and 12 in Eaton, Ohio, later followed by the Great Lakes Sale on May 26 in Wooster, Ohio. The Midwest Stud Ram Sale hits Sedalia the third full week of June. It looks like the Spectacular in Springfield, Ill. is down for this year. There should also have been seven online sales in the books by the end of April. If production tested Shrops are your gool, sheep with good data should be available at the Center of the Nation Sale in Spencer, Iowa in late July as well as a few “ram test” sales. All in all, there are plenty of opportunities to find the connection to the kind of Shropshire you like to raise. Meanwhile, I hope to see lots of Shropshire people around during the spring and summer. Please be sure to call the office with any questions or comments you may have or just to visit.Thank you to all for having interest in this breed and I will see you soon!

Share photos of your kids in their summer activities for the next Voice! shropshirevoice@thesidellreporter.com

National Sale May 11-12 The 19th Annual Shropshire Classic is coming during the Big Ohio weekend on May 11 & 12 and will again be ran by Banner Sale Management, with help from the Ohio Shropshire Association. This sale is usually the first big meeting place each spring for sheep folks from across the country. Board member RJ Creamer is organizing an informal dinner and social hour to start at 6 p.m. on Friday evening. The Ohio Shropshire Association is co-sponsoring hot dogs, hamburgers, brats, baked potatoes, all the fixings and beverages. All Shropshire breeders, consignors and prospective buyers are welcome to attend. The auction of the monthly web page ads will take place at this time. Minimum bid is $75. The highest bidders will win their choice of months. The ads will appear on the homepage of the Shropshire website www.shropshires.org All proceeds go directly to fund

the website. It will be a good place for opportunity to talk about Shrops and enjoy their people. Show day will begin on Friday, May 12 at 8 AM. Shropshires will show as the first breed in the Expo Building. Dustin Cruit of Illinois will serve as judge. This year, rams will show and sell before the ewes, starting with the older classes. Classes are available for yearling rams, fall ram lambs, January ram lambs, February ram lambs, yearling ewes, fall ewe lambs, early January ewe lambs, Late January ewe lambs, early February ewe lambs and late February ewe lambs. All sheep will be shown slick-shorn, of course, and will be guaranteed “spider-free” (genotype NN). All sheep will be either QR or RR.All yearling rams and fall ram lambs will be accompanied by a negative Elisa test for B. ovis. Consignors will each have the option of selling half interest in one yearling ram. This allows some of the best yearling rams around to become available! These rams and the arrangements will be announced on the sale

These two sheep will sell immediately after the Grand Champion and Reserve Grand Champion rams and ewes in the sale order. This addition to the show is a step in the right direction in preserving the character of the Shropshire sheep. The Shropshires will sell first in the order on May 12. Auctioneers Gary Saylor, Danny Westlake, both of Ohio, and Billy MacCauley of Pennsylvania, will sell the sale. There will be an excellent selection of rams and ewes offered. Sheep purchased at this sale have had a history of going on and doing well for their new owners. Futurity-nominated lambs and yearlings will be offered and will be marked with an “F” on their back and on the sale order. All of the 2017 Futurity winners were originally purchased at this sale. rams and ewes in the following age groups: yearlings, fall, December, January, February and March lambs. This sale is designated as a Futurity-nominated sale. Shropshires will sell on Friday, June 29 as the sixth breed, selling after the Polled Dorsets. All shows and sales will be webcast by www.dvauction.com. This event is often a connecting point for sheep being hauled to and from lots of places and this alone may be a good reason to make the trip. Animals not consigned to the sale are dubbed transit animals and will be housed in the horse barn at a per pen per day charge of $5 for consignors and $15 for non-consignors. All transit animals must have separate health papers from sale entries. No other sale comes close to offering top purebred breeders a stronger market or environment in which to merchandize top animals. Each year upwards of 2,000 buyers register at this sale from over 40 states and two or three foreign countries. Plan now on attending!

Board of Director’s Teleconference February 25, 2018 7 PM President Jim Percival called the meeting to order at 7:02 PM EST. Also present were RJ Creamer, Paul Young, Danny Rogers, Mike Elsbury, Re Call, Rick Adams, Tom Slutz, Jim Gruenhagen, Craig King, Darrell Dockter and Becky Peterson, secretary. Absent were Mandy Curtis, Caleb Fritz, Mary Anne Keck and Emily Petzel. Secretary’s Report – The minutes from the previous meeting of Nov. 11 were distributed. Becky noted that Mary Anne Keck had commented that she had been left off the list of the directors not attending. So noted. Rick Adams moved to dispense with the reading of those minutes and to accept the report as printed. Jim Gruenhagen seconded. Motion passed. Report accepted. Treasurer’s Report – Becky had distrib-

uted the end of year report as of 12/31/17. It included a Balance Sheet which showed total assets of $54,823.38. Becky noted that it showed the previous two CDs still at the Harvard Bank but the check had been written on 12/28 but it had not been received or deposited at that time. It also showed the slight penalty withdrawn from those accounts for the early withdrawal. The two accounts are now empty and their total of $11,523.41 has been received and deposited in an account in Greenfield, Mass. The Profit and Loss report showed at net income of $4,846.69, up approximately $3283 over the previous year and $2800 over the planned budget. The Restricted Accounts showed a gain overall of $264 (loss in the Junior Association of $398, gain from Stars of Louisville Sale of $488, gain from Starter Flock fund of $175. Report, second came from Danny Rogers. No further discussion. Motion passed. Report accepted. Committee Reports Voice & Promotion – February Voice should almost be in the mail. There is concern regarding the delay in getting materials to Rinda for timely publication. Stars of Louisville Sale – Not much happening yet. A few minor changes to consider include requiring the original, plus two copies, of health papers for the state vet and not posting sale entry photos on the Shropshire website because most consignors do not care to. Production – Rick Adams states that NSIP dues are needed about March 1.We still need to encourage breeders to take part. Breed Type – There has been no further action on the educational array for the breed standards. Craig King will discuss further with Mary Anne Keck and confer with Deb Petzel to get going. Futurity – No changes have been made to the rules and they have been posted on the

website. Thirteen ewes have been nominated already to the Yearling Ewe Futurity from the November sale. Becky went through the list of seven online sales that have been presented so far. Becky will make sure the nomination rules have been provided to the consignors. Becky has been in contact with Dan Willoughby to ask that he remit the Futurity nomination fees and sale reports for each sale so as not to rely on the consignors to do so. Mike Elsbury asked to have several of the previous year’s Futurity results available on the website. Junior Activities Starter Flock – Committee will be RJ Creamer, Mandy Curtis, Jim Gruenhagen, Rick Adams and Junior Association president Noah Collins. Info has been posted on the website, Facebook page and sent to the Banner and will be sent to Alan Bruhin to distribute to the state extension services. There is $325 left from 2017 for the fund. Royalty Program – No changes for this year. Info is on the website and sent to the Banner. Committee will be Emily Petzel, Re Call,

Danny Rogers and Becky. We should also ask Robin Pardus if she would help out again. Old business NAILE Judge Selection – Becky presented the list of nominations received from the membership as decided at May 2017 meeting. Alex Wolfe 9; Aaron Crome 4; Jason Heeg 3; Alan Bruhin 2; Eric Bruns 2; Dale Davis 1; John Mrozinski 1; Chastin Leggett 1. Becky noted that there weren’t many NAILE exhibitors responding and the ballot box should be available again at the show. Mike Elsbury moved to submit the top three to NAILE in same order of preference. Motion seconded by RJ Creamer. Shropshire Store – Becky and Re Call have been in touch with two different printers, Bullseye Printing in Ohio and Silver Screen Design in Massachusetts, who could do apparel. Artwork has been sent to each one.The latter would be able to link to Shrop website and could hold sales periodically and would produce items and ship them direct to the customer. ASRA would not have to hold any inventory and would have no risk with unsold items. There would be some profit returned to ASRA. RJ Creamer moved, with a second from Darrell Dockter, for Re and Becky to proceed with setting up with Silver Screen Design. Items and artwork need to be selected and the link set up. Perhaps a printing can be made and items available in Eaton. Member Hall of Fame – RJ Creamer has collected information from other breed organizations about their recognition programs. Some discussion followed. It was decided to discuss this further at the meeting in Eaton. Junior Coordinator Position – Becky had discussed this with Re Call and Rick Adams and drew up a job description for a paid Junior Coordinator and the tasks that need to be accomplished. Discussion followed. Rick Adams moved to present the job description and application and offer compensation of $1000. Information will be sent to the Banner and posted on the website and Facebook page. Danny Rogers seconded. Motion passed. Deadline to be April 15. Applications will be reviewed at the meeting in Eaton.

Financial Review/Compilation – Material is ready to submit to the accountant. National Sale – RJ says plans are coming along. Dustin Cruit will judge. Shrops will show and sell first in the day.The Ohio Association is planning a dinner for 6 PM on Friday at which point the website homepage ads will be auctioned off. There will be a deduction of 2% payable to the Ohio Shropshire Association. ASRA can request a donation from Ohio. Rick Adams moved, and Mike Elsbury seconded, to have RJ Creamer and Jim Percival request 1% of the National Sale from Ohio to go to the ASRA scholarship fund. Motion passed. Jim Gruenhagen has ordered the banners to be awarded to the Champions and Reserves. New Business – NAILE Sheep Advisory meeting is set for March 8. Becky will submit the list of judges as moved. She also proposes to split the yearling ewe classes in both the open and junior shows evenly by age instead of the current Feb. 14 date. Becky noted that there is now a surplus in the amounts collected for the Matching Funds and proposes adding $362 from the ASRA for the open show and asking NAILE for $193 to make an equally shared total open show premium $4200. She has also moved some placings around to pay further down in some open classes and allow the January and February ewe lamb classes to split in the open show. Anything submitted at the Advisory meeting will then go to the NAILE Executive Committee on April 12. Promo Display – Becky discussed the purchase of a new, self-contained display that could be safely transported. This had been previously approved. Committees – Jim asked Becky to send the board members the list of committees from the previous year and ask for confirmation. Next Meeting to be in Eaton on Friday, May 11 at 1 PM after the show. Adjournment – with no further business to come before the board, Craig King moved to adjourn at 8:38 PM, seconded by RJ Creamer. So moved. Respectfully submitted, Becky Peterson, secretary _______ Page 13

Fritz joins ASRA as Director

Two new members of the Shropshire Registry Board of Directors elected at their meeting last November were Caleb Frizt and Paul Young. Meet Caleb. Caleb Fritz, is a graduate of Middle Tennessee State University with a bachelor’s degree in animal science, He fell into his grandfather, Dean Fritz’s footsteps, who raised Shropshire sheep in his teenage years. He started learning about sheep and showing with his grandfather since the time he could walk. His grandfather not only taught him about the raising and showing of sheep but also how to shear. Caleb now shears professionally all over the state of Tennessee. In the year 2000, Caleb bought his first two sheep to start his own flock from Glen and Joan High at the Springfield sale. Currently, he has around 35 Shropshire brood

ewes with plans on expanding. Along with doing very well in the Tennessee 4-H shows growing up, in 2007 Caleb won Champion Ewe at the NAILE Junior Show with a ewe lamb he raised. Caleb now devotes his time and efforts into making quality animals and memories for others to enjoy as much as he did when he was growing up. Next issue, Paul Young will be introduced.

2018 Futurity

Both the Ewe Lamb Futurity and Yearling Ewe Futurity Programs will continue in 2018 in an effort to keep junior members interested and involved. They will enhance the junior member’s ability to purchase extremely high quality breeding stock and make it more beneficial for the breeders to consign their very best animals. The rules for both programs are relatively simple and can be found in detail on www.

Juniors may buy a top quality ewe lamb or yearling ewe at one of the following designated sales: Indiana Premier Sale in Greenfield, Ind., Midwest Elite Shropshire Sale in Danville, Ind., National Shropshire Sale in Eaton, Ohio, Great Lakes Sale in Wooster, Ohio, Shropshire Spectacular in Springfield, Ill. and the Midwest Sale in Sedalia, Mo. In addition, certain online sales will be eligible. Ewe lambs purchased as futurity lambs in 2017 can be re-nominated by their junior owner as futurity yearling ewes in 2018. Renomination needs to be completed by May 1. To re-nominate your yearling ewe, please complete the renomination form found on the Shropshire website and send it with a check for $20 to the Shropshire office. (Please note that nominated ewe lambs purchased by juniors at the Stars of Louisville Sale last November are ready for the yearling ewe futurity and do not need to be renominated.) Proceed to exhibit these ewes at shows you normally attend and accumulate points

toward an end-of-the-season cash award. A junior can add a top quality female to his or her flock and possibly win back sizable premium. Double points are awarded at the All-American Junior Show, as well as NAILE, which is the last opportunity to earn points. In 2017, $2740 was collected in nomination fees for ewe lambs and 100 percent was paid out in premiums. The overall winner received $320.80 and each of the three regional winners was paid $219.20. The regional contest paid out four places and the overall division paid out seven places. The yearling ewe nominations totaled $720. It, too, was all paid to 10 places with the winner receiving $180. This year, point cards and futurity rules will be available at the National Sale and on the Shropshire website. Show placings should be verified with the show superintendent who will sign the form. All completed cards are to be mailed back to the office at 41 Bell Rd., Leyden, MA 01337 within 21 days of the show. Current standings will be posted on the Shropshire website as they become available.

Shropshires at Roaring Fork Ranch,Wy. By Don Knepp This story is about Shropshire rams being utilized and raised in a commercial western range environment. For years Knepp– Lafollette Shropshires, along with the earlier Knepp Shropshires, have been based out of Illinois, and more recently, out of Kansas. This flock has broadened it’s footprint to include commercial ram production in Wyoming. In the process, the name has been changed

Two of the stud rams, Knepp “Sport Pepper 3rd and 5th.”

to Performance Shropshires and includes production in all three states. The people involved are Don Knepp and Suzanne LaFollette, the Matt and Michelle Knepp Family and Jock and Olena Sheehan of Dixon, Wy. Jock and Olena’s place is the Roaring Forks Ranch on the Little Snake River. Their ranch has a commercial ewe flock of around 2500 Rambouillet range ewes, plus a Rambouillet breeding flock that produces rams and ewes to sustain the fine wool characteristics of the range ewe flock. Over the years Suffolk rams have been predominant in the commercial range setting. Roaring Forks is bringing changes to this commercial model and has partnered with Knepps and LaFollette to bring Shropshire Terminal rams and Shropshire/Suffolk Cross Commercial Rams into the traditional range ram market. The goal is meatier/hardier range rams. Performance Shropshires’ involvement in commercial ram production grew out of a road trip in 2011 when Don Knepp went with Cody Hiemke to deliver some of Cody’s rams to one of his Utah Niman Ranch clients. From the conversation on that trip, Knepp-LaFollette Shropshires got involved in the Shropshire Genetic Profile Study and from that started the Genetic Convergence Project that involves the combining of Cody and Fred Grovermans (H/G) genetics with the Knepp Shropshires bloodlines. Using line breeding techniques a flock of Shropshires has evolved that is approximately 50 percent Hiemke/Groverman, 30 percent Knepp and 20 percent Cabaniss blood lines. The product is a Shropshire line that has the thickness, depth of body and wool quality for which H/G Shropshires are known, adding the frame, length of body and clean fronts of the legacy Knepp bloodlines and incorporating the wether style and meatiness of Cabaniss breeding. An additional bonus is the breed character traits, ears and refined heads of Hiemke/Groverman genetics. This package is adding pounds to the total meat production __________________ Shropshire Voice

of the operation. We are tying into the deep history of NSIP record keeping and selection by Hiemke/Groverman and adding to it with 13 years of our own NSIP program. Additionally, this year the Shropshire/Suffolk Crossbred ram is being added into NSIP. In the western range environment, hardiness is a major factor. The rams never really see a shed after they reach four months of age. The Hiemke/Groverman Shrop genetics, part of Genetic Convergence, seems to be a factor in the hardiness. This includes natural round muscling along with wool characteristics of greasiness and crimp – all factors that we believe add to survivability on the range. As well as the Shropshire flock, Roaring Forks has a Purebred Rambouillet flock. The Rambouillet flock produces rams to breed for replacement ewes. Our Shropshire flock produces rams for the 1) stud ram market, 2) Commercial rams to breed for terminal market lambs and, 3) to sire the Shrop/Suffolk Cross program. Stud and Commercial Shropshire ram sales will occur after we reach a 50-60 head Shropshire yearling plus ram breeding inventory. Currently, there are around 20 yearling and older Shrop rams, plus 22 2018 ram lambs on the ground. Roaring Forks commercial ram sales will be initially from the Shropshire/Suffolk cross breeding program. This is an effort to break into the crossbred Terminal ram market which is quite large, but Suffolk oriented. It is interesting to us that recent National Suffolk Breed meeting minutes speak to the problem of ranchers finding Suffolks that are workable in that environment and that one western Suffolk Commercial Terminal Ram breeding program is being formed with over 1000 ewes. Registered Shropshire Terminal rams are a relatively new thing in the western range, but Performance Shropshires has received attention with our strong showing last summer in the Wyoming Blackface Ram Test at Uof WY, the first Shropshires in a public commercial test setting in probably 75 years. In his commercial program Jock also has Shropshire

rams from Cody Hiemke and Rick Adams (sired with Hiemke/Groverman genetics).

The Three Breeding and Growing Periods at Roaring Forks

Group One - The purebred and cross flocks (Shropshire, Shropshire-Suffolk and Rambouillet) are bred August-September and lambed out in January-February at the ranch in barns and lambs are grown out in pastures, there. Group Two - A second commercial flock (rams put in on Nov. 1 in the Red Desert and out on Dec. 15) and made up of 740 head of Rambouillet ewe lambs and ewes over six years old are bred to blackface rams for early lambing. These rams are the Shropshire rams, some are the four stud rams, and Shropshire ram lambs as well as Shrop-Suffolk Crossbred ram lambs. These ewes are lambed in one of two lambing barns at the ranch (see Roaring Fork Ranch,Wy. pens photo, Page 27) in March-April and then moved with lambs to summer forest permit mountain pastures on July 1 to grow out. In early to mid-September they are then brought down from those pastures and sent to market or feedlots. Group Three – The main group of Commercial Rambouillet ewes, about 1800 head, are bred later (this year starting on Dec. 13). This group is made up of two to six-year-old ewes and are timed to lamb in the mountain forest permit pastures in mid-May to late June. Two of these forest permit pastures are in Colorado and two in Wyoming. This group breeding program uses all the rams, Shropshires, Shropshire crosses, and Rambouillet rams, 75 to 90 head of rams at one time, in a mixed setting. This group is bred in a 300,000 acre Red Desert BLM allotment (see Red Desert Salt Sage Range photo) where they live on salt sage and snow during the breeding period. There are a couple of water holes if the weatherman doesn’t cooperate. The rams for all the desert breeding are marked with red oxcide powder for counting purposes which is done by the Peruvian herd_______ Page 25

Monica Ebert Goes Global? It has been seven-and-a-half years since a Shropshire Scholarship was awarded to Kansas student Monica Ebert. Becky Peterson caught up with her recently and found she is currently working in the wool industry in South Africa. Monica is the daughter of Jeff and Kerri Ebert of Saint George, Kansas and spent her youth helping with their flock of 150200 ewes and riding to shows and sales. She is just one example of the successes good Shropshire youngsters are enjoying after all of their hard work at home, and then at school. Peterson asked her for an update on her experience following college. She shared the following:

A bit of a time line‌following my graduation from Kansas State University with my Bachelor of Science in apparel design and production, I went on to get my Master’s degree at Angelo State University. I completed my course work through Angelo State but my research was conducted and funded through Texas A&M AgriLife Research. My thesis research focused on sheep genetics and wool apparel product development. By covering such a broad spectrum I was able to gain a solid understanding of the process wool goes through once it is shorn to the final product. Following the successful completion of my thesis defense I accepted a job at Montana State University as the wool laboratory manager. I served in that role for just over a year and worked closely with the wool growers in Montana and the surrounding states to improve their wool clips. I was then offered the opportunity to join the New Zealand Merino Company in Christchurch, New Zealand as the Strategic Project Manager and made the big move in _______ Page 28

Monica Ebert early 2017. Through that position, I worked with a number of projects ranging from working with growers with a strong focus on environmental stewardship on their properties to looking at new uses and users for the coarser wool types that New Zealand is world-known for growing. Most recently, I was offered the position as the International Brand Development Manager for Core Merino at BKB, an agriculture company based in Port Elizabeth, South Africa. So, once again, I made another move and am nearly a month into my role at BKB. Core Merino is a wool athleisure brand that was started by BKB several years back and it is now my job to reinvent and reinvigorate the brand and take it internationally. It is the ideal role for me given my background and education as it allows me to interact with wool growers but then turn their raw wool product into a finished garment through a global yet, transparent supply chain. Support the wool industry and check it out for yourself at https://coremerino.com/. __________________ Shropshire Voice

And the list can go on.    I first met Tom on the county fair show circuit in 1956 when I was 12 years old and Tom was 11. Tom and I showed sheep together and against each other since we both had Shropshire sheep. I was also showing shorthorn cattle and Tom was also showing Dorset sheep. Back then, all Dor-

sets had horns. In 1956 there were no livestock trailers, only pick up trucks, one ton and two ton trucks. We started at Jerseyville, then Carrollton, Carlinville and Jacksonville, Ill. together, and then we split up. Tom went south to Highland and several other fairs and I went north to Sangamon, Rushville, Griggsville, St. Sterling and Petersburg. We met back up for 10 days at the Illinois State Fair at Springfield showing in the junior and open Shropshire shows and sleeping in junior department dorms. Tom and I weren’t even teenagers yet. Many lessons were learned as we repeated that routine for the next eight years, often comparing high school sports, 4-H and FFA. We both loved football and both made all-conference in football and little all-state. Life went on and we both served in the military. Jeff Handy and J.R. Harris showed my sheep at these same fairs and someone showed Tom’s sheep for him, also. We both farmed with passion, married and developed our families. Our children, Anna, Ted and Jonathan Mies began showing sheep, as did Tom’s children, Melissa and Lynn Glassmaker. In 1976 the American Shropshire Registry Association came out with a new promotional brochure. On the front cover was Tom’s Hartzell Stud Ram with Melissa riding on his back. On the inside front cover of the brochure was a photo of the rear end of our ram which was Reserve Champion at the 1972 Illinois State Fair. Our flocks were improving. As all our kids got older, they started making the summer fair circuits and the Illinois State Fair and friendship’s developed for them. As my grandkids, Calyssa, Dain, Samantha, Amber and Eva were moving sheep into Macoupin County Fair on July 4, 2016, we heard of my friend Tom Glassmaker’s death. An era has passed – 70 years of sheep and shows – and a lifetime of wonderful memories of my friend, Tom Glassmaker. _______ Page 32
