From the President As quickly as summer had come, it is now in the rear view mirror. Near record rains in the Midwest has lead to above average crop yields. This should mean cheaper feeds for the livestock industry. I had the opportunity to travel to Indiana and Illinois State Fairs this past summer and was impressed that we continue to have strong numbers of both exhibitors and animals being exhibited. Indiana continued to have a large show with quality running deep into each class. Illinois State Fair saw an increase in not only number of animals but in quality, as well over the previous few years. Both shows had tremendous quality from top to bottom of each class. I have heard Ohio, also, had a very large show with quality depth throughout the class. The Shropshire shows at these state fairs continue to be some of the largest shows at their respective fairs. If you are looking for a summer vacation next year, I would recommend traveling to one or more of these shows and looking for yourself. I promise you will not be disappointed. We now turn our attention to our fall activities in Louisville. N.A.I.L.E. will once again be the host of the National Shropshire Show. The weekend will be kicked off with the Stars of Louisville Shropshire Sale on Saturday morning followed by the National Junior Show on Sunday. The Annual Meeting of the Members will be held at 5 p.m. on Monday
S
and the week will be capped off with the National Open Show on Tuesday at 11 a.m. I encourage everyone to participate in the events at Louisville. Even if you don’t plan to exhibit, I recommend making the trip to watch the different Shropshire events. You will not find a better and deeper collection of Shropshires any where else in the country than exhibited at Louisville. This is really the premier show of the year. I look forward to seeing everyone in Louisville. Please have a safe trip and hope to see you there!
Voice mailing policy The Shropshire Voice will be mailed, normally by first class mail, to all ASRA members (defined in the bylaws as having paid annual dues in two of the past three years). This includes junior members. Membership or subscription status is noted on the mailing label. Non-members may subscribe for an annual fee of $15 or $5 per issue. Special requests will be handled at the discretion of the editor and/or publisher. The Voice is the official publication of the American Shropshire Registry Association and the only magazine published by, for and about Shropshire Sheep.

From the Secretary Time flies when we’re having fun and here it is late in August of 2014 as I write this. It seems as if it was only early spring a few minutes ago and time has certainly flown. We always begin our year not believing that it is a brand new year already. Late winter and spring creep by slowly and then it is finally June and the days are long. A person can get a lot of things done in the evening until about 9:00 when it cools off a little. July moves in and it is still summer. Then, kapow! It is fair season and where did our long days go? Oh, the days are still plenty long enough but it is dark before 8:00. And the roadside crickets are chirping which always makes me think of school buses soon to be making daily treks by the farm. Soon I will be off to my state fair, the Big E, and fall will be here when I can finally come home after almost 14 days there. After that, the year will be wrapping up quickly with the harvest and preparations for winter. And we’ll say where did the year go? Summer here in Massachusetts has been relatively cool and wet. There have been only a handful of 90 degree days and quite a few cool ones. There have been several days with very heavy rain so the ground is very wet. It is definitely not a drought year here.We have so much grass; it has been difficult to keep up with pastures. But the harvest of the second cutting hay has been slow as was the early crop. I’m always amazed how other areas of the country are so much further ahead in the hay crops than our region. It has been hard here to get three good days in a row. The Shropshire year has been full of good sheep at the shows and sales. Many young people are showing interest in the breed, judging by the new buyers at the sale and the attendance at the junior show events. Congratulations to the winners of all of the events, the scholarship winners and the recipients of the starter flock animals and grants. I am pleased to say that at least eight _______ Page 4
former junior members have paid their first senior membership fees, demonstrating a continued interest and more serious involvement in Shropshires. We’ve always said that the juniors are the future of the breed and it becomes really apparent when they stick with it! I traveled to the All-American Junior Show in Hutchinson, Kansas in July. It was hot at home but was in the 70s the first two days while there. We enjoyed a nice facility and had a good show. The Shropshire numbers were down slightly from other years but I was glad to see that there were several new exhibitors. We were finally able to get a Shropshire junior cookout off the ground. It looked a bit sketchy the week beforehand, but along came Mary Anne Keck of Missouri who, along with her parents, Bob and Karen Johnson, provided enough hamburger and hotdogs to keep the grill going. Several exhibitors brought rolls to serve them with. Thank you to Mark and Prudie Miller of Indiana for doing the cooking. The rest of the expense of the lunch was covered by a generous donation from Leon Hicks of Oklahoma. Many, many thanks go to local Kansas hard workers Jeff Ebert and Ted Van Horn for seeing to the physical needs of the entire show. The Kansas State Fairgrounds was a great place to have this event and I hope it can return there in the future. While driving back to the airport with my usual traveling companions, we were able to find and visit a field of Kansas sunflowers. Of course, the photo of our sunflower watching made it to Facebook and we were officially dubbed crazy New Englanders. We also thoroughly enjoyed our drive through the Flint Hill region. It was beautiful. The office has been rather busy. Certainly spring sale season generates work but the largest volume of work comes in June and _________________________ Shropshire Voice October 2014
July. I frequently work past regular afternoon hours and am back at the registry computer after the outdoor evening chores most nights. When the work tapers off about the third week of August, I can take a little time to catch my breath before starting on the NAILE preparations and catching up on the promotion work. I look forward to seeing folks in Louisville this year. We are fortunate to have our open Shropshire show early in the week so that it
will closely follow the junior show. All of the Shropshires will be under one roof at the same time, benefitting the junior and open show exhibitors alike. If you have never been to the North American you should really try to make the trip. There are so many things to see there and the aura is just fantastic. Old friendships are renewed there and new ones cultivated. There is never a shortage of people to discuss sheep with and there are plenty of other topics also!
LEGAL NOTICE Annual Meeting of the Members Official notice is hereby given to all Members of the American Shropshire Registry Association, Inc. that the 2014 Annual Meeting of the Members will be held on Monday, Nov. 17 at 5 P.M. in Louisville, Ky. Norbert Jackson – Indiana District Each membership in the American Shropshire Registry Association, Inc. is entitled to one vote at the Annual Meeting of the Members. Such vote must be cast in person. Those members attending the Annual Meeting shall constitute a quorum for the purpose of transacting the business of the Association. All members are encouraged to attend and participate. At the board meeting on May 10, 2013, the ASRA Board of Directors approved the addition of one Director to the Indiana region and the combining of the West and Northwest Districts upon the “Redistricting” that is to occur every six years, next happening in 2014. This would effectively reduce the number of regions to nine and leave the number of directors at 15. Since the number of districts, and the number of directors within them are defined by the Bylaws, and changes to them would require a Bylaw Amendment which is defined by Article X. This amendment vote took place in April by written ballot and passed, becoming effective at the Annual Meeting. A second director for the Indiana District will be elected at that time. The location of the meeting will be posted on the website and also on the display board at NAILE. No meal will be served. Becky Peterson Secretary _______ Page 5

The Junior Breeding Sheep Show will run all day on Sunday, Nov. 16. Four rings will be utilized this year in an effort to keep the show to a manageable length. The National Junior Shropshire Show is scheduled to be fourth breed of the day, Ring 3. Mark Johnson, Tim Fleener or Matt Scramlin will be sorting the entries, depending on numbers for the three meat breed rings. The National Junior Shropshire Sheep Association provides a traveling trophy to the Champion Ram and Champion Ewe. ASRA and NAILE offer a total of $2635 in premiums for this show. The January Ewe Lamb and February Ewe Lamb classes will be split if more than 30 entries are checked in. for paid members and open show exhibitors to nominate a judge for the open Shropshire show in 2015. There will be a ballot box located in the breed display area. Please take the time to submit the name of a judge for next year. New rules noted by NAILE management: There are a few new Sheep Division rules for 2014. Each rule addresses some of the challenges of keeping the world’s largest indoor sheep show organized and running smoothly. The rule with the biggest impact states that all animals must show as entered, and there can be no substitutions outside of class. Also, switching between slick and fitted classes will not be permitted. A second rule dealing with check-in and showing will be enforced. It states: Exhibitors are required to check-in with the Sheep Department Staff to verify entries and receive class armbands. This process will close at 5 p.m. the day before a breed is to
be shown. Any exhibitor not checking-in by this deadline or not having individual entries verified by this deadline will have those entries struck from the respective show. Armbands will be issued for each individual animal entered, and the appropriate armband must be worn in the corresponding class. Junior Market Lamb Show drug testing will continue. For additional information see the Premium Catalog rules and the National Code of Show Ring Ethics, also published in the NAILE Catalog. A new rule for the Junior Market Lamb Show states: All wethers must be completely slick shorn, including flank and belly wool, within 5 days of the show. Wool may be left below the knees and hocks only. The top five animals in each class will be inspected at re-weigh. The Grand and Reserve Champions from the Junior Market Lamb Show will be auctioned at the NAILE Sale of Champions on Thursday, Nov. 20 at 7 p.m. Everyone is invited to attend an open reception at 6 p.m. before the Sale.

Board of Directors Meeting Minutes Friday May 9, 2014 Eaton, OH
The meeting was called to order by President Brad Slutz at 1 p.m. Also present were Jim Percival, R.J. Creamer, Alan Bruhin, Norm Jackson, Jim Gruenhagen, Rick Adams, Re Call, Cody Hiemke, Tim Roberts and Sandy Cross. Becky Peterson was present as Secretary. Rinda Maddox was present as Voice publisher. Mark McCabe was present as a guest. Bob Johnson, Robert Dinsmore and Darrell Dockter did not attend. Secretary’s report: Becky had previously distributed the minutes of the last teleconference of January 19. Alan Bruhin moved to dispense with the reading of the minutes and to accept the secretary’s report. Jim Percival seconded and the motion passed. Secretary’s report was approved. Treasurer’s report: Becky presented the Treasurer’s report as of April 30 which showed total assets of $45,715.36 and a net loss of $2,660.80 so far this year. Becky noted

that the most recent Voice advertising has been invoiced and that registration work is down from 2013 by 137 and attributes the difference to the lack of the early Spectacular sale date. However it was an increase of 166 head over 2012. Transfers were down by 75 to 103, which was about the same as the 2012 level. Becky also noted that the bill for the All-American Junior Show was paid within this report this year, much earlier than other years. Donations would be accepted the next day for class sponsorships. Breeder’s index renewals are slower than in the past. Jim Percival moved to accept the treasurer’s report and RJ Creamer seconded. The report was accepted. Committee reports: Budget & Finance: Re Call noted that the budget had allowed $700 for a new display booth but the total spent was only $517. Awards for the Classic National Sale totaled $116. Jim Percival posed the question asking if the ASRA could afford to award a cash grant for the Starter Flock instead of gathering animals. Perhaps the regional sponsorship could be tapped? Discussion followed. Rick Adams suggested funding the Starter Flock grant with donations and leave the regional support funding alone. These monies could be put into the special earmarked funds. Brad suggested a committee of Alan Bruhin, Rick Adams and Tim Roberts to work out the Starter Flock support with the Junior Association Board of Directors. Becky has contacted the accountant for a review and will work on getting the information submitted. She noted that the cost for the 2012 review was $2000. She also contacted the IRS regarding the NonProfit reinstatement. The determination is still pending but IRS said they would make a decision within 30 days. Promotion: Rinda stated that she is pleased with the Voice over the last two years. The covers have been sold well ahead of each issue. The color ads inside the book are selling well. She asked for human interest photos, especially of the juniors and their Shropshires. The website is also working well. Jim Percival asked about boosting the search engine to _______ Page 9
make the site come up higher on the list for searches for Shropshires and Rinda said she and Amanda would look into it. President’s Book project: Tim Barnes has offered to perform video interviews with the presidents of the past 25 years and hopes that it would help to get information for the project. Becky will supply him with the contact information. NAILE: Alan Bruhin traveled to Louisville to the Sheep Advisory Committee meeting and reported on some of the highlights.

Extra bleachers will be available to improve the viewing of the four rings in the junior show. Alan was able to encourage the Sheep Superintendent Mike Hancock to recommend the funding of the split January Ewe Lamb Class in the junior show. ASRA will continue to support the second February Class premiums. The NAILE Open Shropshire Show will be on Tuesday, Nov. 18 in the morning. The show is the first half of the sheep week so the Stars of Louisville Sale will be able to happen during the junior show weekend. Production: Cody reported that the NSIP program was going well and there has been new interest among the Shropshire breeders. He is able to upload older flock data easily. He suggested finding a way to encourage junior members to get involved in production records. Perhaps a class could be added to larger shows or national sales where performance data could be judged in addition to normal criteria. Cody said that there were webinars planned to demonstrate the collection and input of data. Cody would send information for Becky to share on the ASRA Facebook page. He also would be able to make a presentation at the junior activity meeting in Louisville on Nov. 15. Junior activities: Thank you to Alan Bruhin for sending the ASRA Starter Flock application to extension services in every state. Fourteen applications had been received from five states. The committee of Jim Gruenhagen, Rick Adams, RJ Creamer and Norm Jackson had reviewed all 14 and unanimously narrowed it done to two applicants, finally choosing Noah Collins of Morristown, Tenn. as the winner. Becky noted

that the Junior Association had previously contacted breeders looking for donations of animals to the program for the 2013 year. With this program only getting off the ground in 2014, not all of the same breeders were able to donate and it took a little longer and up to the week before the award date to assemble the three ewes. Further discussion was held regarding making the award a cash grant to purchase sheep at sales. No decision was made and it would be discussed with the Junior Association. Futurity: Forty lambs had been nominated so far from the three online sales and the Indiana Premier Sale. Four sales are left (Classic, Great Lakes, Spectacular and Midwest). Discussion followed and it was noted that sheep that do not sell are not nominated and are not assessed a fee. Banner Sale Management concurred but noted that Shropshires are the only breed that does this. Four yearlings were renominated from 2013 and 14 lambs were nominated for the Yearling Futurity from the 2013 NAILE Sale. Scrapie tags still need to be recorded at sales and supplied to the Becky. Indiana Directorship: Becky had sent out 204 ballots to paid adult members and received 84 back. Three of the 84 were received late and one ballot was signed but with no vote. Ballots were date stamped and assembled for the ballot committee consisting of Jim Percival,Tim Roberts and Cody Hiemke to count after the meeting. Preliminary inspection showed that the bylaw passed, adding a director to the Indiana region. Shropshire store: Jim Percival reported that it was set to go with a new vendor, Trophy Sports. Polo shirts, sweatshirts, hoodies and women’s fitted shirts will be offered. Items can be screen printed or embroidered with the Shropshire logo. The ASRA will receive 10% of the sales of the items and payment will be made quarterly. A page will be added to the Shropshire website which will show what is offered and link directly to the vendor. Jim will let us know when it is up and going. Old business: there was none to discuss New Business: Sale reports: Illini Sale sold one ram _________________________ Shropshire Voice October 2014
lamb for $250. There have been three online sales so far which included two of Rife Shropshires and the Ohio Spring Fling where a total 24 Shropshires sold. Twentytwo sold out of the Indiana Premier Sale. The Great Plains Sale that was advertised for early May was cancelled for lack of entries. Stars of Louisville Sale: Since the NAILE open show is in the early part of the week, it would be good to continue the sale in 2014. So moved by Rick Adams and RJ Creamer. Other new business: There had been a request to have the Midwest Junior Preview Show count for double futurity points. Discussion followed. It was decided that since there is still one futurity-nominated sale after that show, it should not count for double points. This actually had been discussed before regarding the Spectacular Sale and junior show. It had not been an issue until consignors could nominate yearling ewes at sales. Also, the All-American is a double point show and is in relative close proximity to the Midwest Preview Show, making two double point shows in the same region. Becky noted that the registry computer, which is seven years old, operates on Windows XP which is now an unsupported operating system. If it should develop issues, it might compromise the ability of the registry database to operate. It was suggested that Becky discuss this with the Hampshire Association and find out whether the program is compatible with Windows 7 or 8 before any upgrade takes place. Meanwhile, Becky was advised to back up the program and data on a cloud to prevent loss of data. Becky will contact Jeff Ebert and Karey Claghorn for more information. Next meeting: Annual Meeting takes place with the National Show in Louisville. Sale and junior activities is Saturday, junior show is Sunday, open show is Tuesday. Rick Adams and Jim Percival moved to hold the Board of Director’s meeting on Monday, Nov. 17 at noon and the Annual Member meeting on Monday Nov. 17 at 5 p.m. With no further business to discuss, RJ Creamer and Jim Gruenhagen moved to adjourn at 2:40 PM. _______ Page 11

HHH Stars of Louisville
While you are in Louisville this November, be sure to take in the Sixth Stars of Louisville Shropshire Sale on Saturday, Nov. 15 in the sale arena just off the sheep facility near the “office trailer.” We have been very fortunate to have been able to retain the opening time slot in the day’s sale events. We will begin our morning with the entries being evaluated at 8:30 a.m. by Eric Bruns. The entries will be available for buyers’ inspection. The order of sale will be posted and the sale will follow as soon as possible after 10 a.m. in order to maintain the schedule of the remaining breed sales of the day. Danny Westlake of Marysville, Ohio will serve as auctioneer. Terms of sale are cash or good check paid on sale day. If unable to attend the sale in person, any member of the sale committee can handle a bid for you, but requests for mail bids should be directed to Sale Manager Becky Peterson. The sale committee consists of Chairman Randy Rife, Bob Johnson, Jim Brandt and Dennis Avery, R.J. Creamer and Jim Isler. As in any other sale, ownership transfers will be made in the ASRA office after the sale and will be returned to the buyer as soon as possible. Nancy Miniter, a Massachusetts sheep

breeder, vet tech and ultrasound technician, will scan ewes for pregnancy status. The resulting information will be announced at the sale block. Consignors have been asked to guarantee that sale entries are free of the spider gene and be resistant to Scrapie by being either QR or RR at codon 171. A veterinarian will be on hand to issue health certificates. If your state requires an entry permit, please contact your state veterinarian’s office ahead of time to make the necessary arrangements. All sheep will be identified by a USDA approved ear tag or tattoo. For a few other sale perks, consignors will be able to nominate ewe lambs entered in this sale to be eligible to compete in the sixth Shropshire Yearling Ewe Futurity in 2015, if purchased by youth buyers. Also, sale management has been able to allow consignors to retain rights to show their entries in the Junior Shropshire Show on Sunday, Nov. 16 and/or the open show on Tuesday, Nov. 18. This encourages the breeder to consign a sheep that he considers worthy of showing in the National Show in Louisville and making that quality available to buyers. We will assist purchasers who are not exhibitors in obtaining an early release for purchased animals only after the junior or open show if the animal is entered. Also, with exhibitors attending from across the country, consignors and the sale committee will work with buyers needing transportation of sheep purchased at the sale. For a sale catalogue, contact ASRA secretary and Sale Manager Becky Peterson at (413)624-9652 or shropsec@hotmail. com. The catalog is also available on the Shropshire website www.shropshires.org. Consignors will be encouraged to provide photos of consignments ahead of time to be posted on the website with the sale catalog. So be sure to join us in Louisville in November for the Sixth Stars of Louisville Shropshire Sale. It is just another good reason to come and celebrate our 130th year of Shropshire sheep in the United States! _______ Page 13

Annual shows and sales report Ohio Classic
The 2014 Ohio Shropshire Classic was once again a classic event. This was the second year as the National Shropshire Sale. The breed had the honors of leading off on show and sale days. Judge Dan Shell did the sorting of 114 head on Friday morning. A leisurely afternoon followed and was topped off by a social hour organized by Ohio director and breeder R.J. Creamer. He had worked for weeks planning the event and had provided ample supplies of pop and other beverages and plenty of sandwich makings. He acknowledged that it wasn’t that difficult but also stated that he was not willing to begin a new career as an event coordinator. Thank you R.J. for organizing this event! After the snacks and the socializing, Bill MacCauley helped to sell the monthly website ads for the Shropshire website. All 12 months were sold for a total of $2425 which goes toward the running of the website. Thank you to all who bid on and purchased ads. Check the website each month to see who is taking advantage of this opportunity. Following the bidding, the 2014 Shropshire Starter Flock was presented to Noah Collins of Morristown, Tenn. Saturday’s Shropshire sale was very successful with Danny Westlake working for
an overall average of $757.88 on 111 head, $88.22 over and above the 2013 average. It appears that even though the entries were down slightly, the quality was exceptional. Buyers found the sheep that interested them and bid until they owned them. It was very interesting to note that 30 sheep (27%) were sold to 19 new buyers that were to be first time Shropshire owners and that 16 of those buyers were young people. Ten of the 86 females rang the bell for over $1000. The sale began with the class winning yearling and Champion Ewe from Avery Shropshires selling to Jade Wilson of Pennsylvania for $1800. Avery’s Fall Ewe Lamb and Reserve Champion brought $2250 from Sugar Ridge Ranch of Wisconsin. Avery followed with yet another $1800 yearling going to the Wilsons. City Limits sold another popular yearling to Bishop & Bishop Shrops of New York for $1000. The high-selling yearling was a ewe from Glenn and Joan High. She sold to Kennedy Algire of Ohio for $2250. The 21 yearling ewes averaged $820.24. The Avery flock continued its good day with two more fall ewe lambs selling at $1000 to the Shippy Family of Indiana and Triple J Farm from Delaware. The 10 fall ewe lambs averaged $805. Eleven early January

ewe lambs went over the block and averaged $831.82. The very popular and high-selling ewe in the sale came from this class and Gruenhagen’s SS Shrops program and sold to Colby Clark of New Hampshire for $3000. The Junior Champion Rife ewe brought $800 from Erica Nightengale of Oklahoma, as did a J.N. Dirlam & Sons lamb going to Conlee Lea of Tennessee. City Limits sent a nice lamb to Schindel Shrops of Piqua, Ohio for $900. The Late January ewe lamb class was a little more affordable with an average of $566.07 on 14 head. The class winner and Reserve Junior Champion was a lamb from the Mrozinski flock that sold to Emily Petzel
of Wisconsin for $600. The City Limits ewe brought $800 from Hayden Meeks of Tennessee. The high-seller in the class came from Trevor High and sold to Clay-Nob Farms of Pennsylvania for $900. Seventeen Early February ewe lambs averaged $541.18. There were four popular ewes in this group with the class winner from BWB Farms bringing $600 from Page Shropshires of Ohio. Moeller Shrops of Ohio selected a nice lamb from John Melvin for $1500. A Glenn High lamb went to Lizzy Miller of Maryland for $600 and the SS Shrop folks added a $1050 lamb from Steve and Nancy Elsbury. The young Late February class averaged $523.08 on 13 lots.
2014 NAILE Silent Auction will support the Shropshire scholarship fund. Baskets should be available for display by Sunday, Nov. 16. Bidding will close at the conclusion of the open show on Tuesday, Nov. 18. Your donation or generous bid for this great cause is always appreciated!” Avery Shropshires was awarded Townsend Best Consignment Award at the Classic.

The high-seller was consigned by Elsbury Farms and sold to Mark and Patty Wisehart. There were four fall ewe lambs averaging $556. Hal Schuman, Jr. picked up a Rife lamb at $700 and a Mrozinski lamb for $675. Fourteen spring lambs sold, averaging $370. Matt Dirlam had the high-selling ewe in this class for $650. The Shropshire Spectacular returned to its former time and location this year. Jeff Ebert managed the sale along with the National Cheviot Sale. The Oxfords and Montadales also held sales at this time. Thirty-four animals were judged by Evan Snyder. Billy MacCauley served as auctioneer. The sheep sold moderately well but it did appear that there was not a large demand for rams. The sale average on 22 head was $482.95.The Champion Ram was a February ram lamb from City Limits. He sold to Red & Black Genetics of Illinois for $525. Five yearling ewes sold at an average of $615. The Champion was a City Limits ewe that brought $1200 from Owen Walker of Oklahoma. Midwest Sale
A relatively good sale went in the books this year in Sedalia. The sheep were judged on Tuesday by Brad Gilmore and then sold on Friday. Sedalia is a great place to visit with one’s faraway sheep friends and the schedule there allows for lots of visiting. Two yearling rams sold, one at $500 from Abe Warren to Durbin Shrops of Missouri and one at $550 from Cabaniss, selling to The Heinecke family of Missouri. Six Early

Judging European style By Tim Barnes For The Board of Directors of the Ohio Shropshire Association
Three years ago, with the blessing of the Ohio State Fair sheep department, the Ohio Shropshire Breeders Association started a jackpot breeding sheep show. With a $5 entry fee and sliding scale payback, exhibitors who participated in the regular open Shropshire show could enter in the Encore Shropshire Show. Sheep were exhibited in the same classes as they exhibited in the previous show and there were no group classes. This show is held on Sunday morning, the final day of the fair, where in recent years no shows had been scheduled in this time slot. On this day, some breeders have been released to go home and the barn is almost empty. The Encore show gives fair visitors the opportunity to watch a sheep show and also gives Shropshire exhibitors the chance to show again under a different judge. The show has evolved into 60 to 70 head of the top sheep from each flock being exhibited. This compares to 250 head in the earlier show. This year, after some discussion, two classes were chosen to be shown loose in an expanded show ring pen. The judge, Jim
Corbett, entered the pen moving within each class. The early yearling ewe class had 10 entries and the intermediate ewe lamb class had four entries. We quickly realized the pen needed to be proportional to the size and number of entries so each entry could be viewed equally by the judge. Jim selected from the bottom to the top and as a sheep was selected it was removed from the pen to the lineup in the show ring. At the conclusion of the placing, the class was reviewed and comments were made by the judge. The events had several observers from around the sheep barn. This format does require changes for the judge and the exhibitor. Three things are very apparent from the start of the show: 1. Ownership of the sheep is unknown 2. Showmanship is eliminated 3. Slick shorn entries make the evaluation process easier for observers and for the judge. Some negative aspects of this process include the facts that the judge cannot mouth each sheep and he/she does not have the ability to handle loin length and width or and other hands-on factors. Will we do it again? We do hope we have presented a different option for evaluation of Shropshire sheep.
The yearling ewe class of the Encore show at the Ohio State Fair had 10 head of yearling ewes showing loose in the ring. Two classes were judged in this European style format.

This year we travelled to the Kansas State Fairgrounds for the All-American.The weather started out in the 70’s but then heated up for the weekend but was very tolerable. The facility was excellent and the hosts gracious. Jeff Ebert coordinated the locals and saw to everyone’s needs. There were numerous general sponsors including Kansas Sheep Association, Kansas Sheep Council, Hutchinson Convention & Visitors Bureau, Kansas Dairy Commission, Midstates Wool Growers, Kauffman Seeds, Tom Clayman Family, Sydell, Honor Show Chows, Weaver Leather, Profiles Livestock Show Supply, American Lamb Board, Ebert Sheep Farm, Larned Veterinary Clinic, Tom Burke, Sheep Breeders Sale Management, Nelson Water Bowls, Kiefer Manufacturing, and the Kansas Farm Bureau. All of the breed associations represented at the show contributed, also. All of the Shropshire classes also had an individual sponsor. It is really fantastic to have so many people and groups give to put on this event. There was always at least one meal provided each day. One morning we were treated to pancakes. It was fun watching batter being dispensed on the grill and then having the server flip them through the air to your plate and she was really good at it! The Junior Shropshire Sheep Association even had a cook out after the Shropshire show. Its beginnings were a bit shaky but with the help
of Bob and Karen Johnson who provided the hamburger and hotdogs, Prudie and Mark Miller who cooked them, Leon Hicks who gave money to help,Ted Van Horn who found a tub to ice the drinks and Mary Ann Keck’s enthusiasm, we were able to have a nice lunch for the kids. This year there was a special “funraiser” to raise funds. Anyone could nominate, for a fee, parents and adult helpers to show off their sheep handling skills. Nominees could designate which breed they were supporting either participate or buy their way out of the ring. The funds went to that breed’s junior association. Some of the entrants worked diligently to make the best of the sheep they had, others enjoyed their time in the ring and made it fun for all. Leon Hicks was nominated by his followers and did his best to catch the judge’s eye.We thank Leon for his willingness to participate and for his donation. There were several other contests besides the sheep show including essays, judging, ad layout, poster, photo, logo and T-shirt design contests. The more events an exhibitor participated in, the more points he or she received. These points were combined with the points earned in the sheep ring. Each breed awarded a “Top Gun Silver Belt Buckle” to its highest point exhibitor. This year the Shropshire Top Gun winner was Rachel Flanders of Noblesville, Ind. Congratulations, Rachel, for all of your hard work.

Four 2013, the National Junior Shropshire Sheep applications were received from Tennessee Association devised a Flock Starter Program youth, three from Ohio, two from New Hampshire, three from Michigan and two from Louisiana. The opportunity was promoted in various sheep circles and publications, farm papers and extension service. The winning application was submitted by Noah Collins of Morristown, Tenn. Noah is 13 years old and has a sheep and cattle background. He was very excited to be chosen as the first Starter Flock Award winner. “I would like to say thank you to the National Junior Shropshire Sheep Association for giving me and the other youth of America the opportunity to apply for the Shropshire Starter Flock Award as well as having the opportunity to have a local breeder to serve as a mentor to the recipient. The experience of breeders and their knowledge is something that you can’t put a price on. I see this as a great effort Noah Collins at the Ohio Classic. to get youth involved in the livestock program and for them to be able to give back to other youth in the future,” Noah said. The flock was provided this year by three Ohio breeders. Glenn and Joan High and Highlife Farm sponsored a ewe lamb as did Mark McCabe. A yearling ewe was provided by Randy Rife. Noah took possession of his new Shropshires in May and planned on exhibiting his sheep in Tennessee and we hope to see him in Louisville. 2014 Scholarship recipients Three scholarship applications were received in 2014 and they all showed numerous academic, community, leadership and Shropshire accomplishments. Two equal scholarships of $400 are being awarded to Brianna Brockmann and Taylor High. In this issue, you will meet Brianna. In the next issue you will be introduced to Taylor.
Brianna Brockmann Brianna Brockmann, of Garden Prairie, Ill., is the daughter of Gary and Vicki Brockmann. She graduated from Belvidere High School this past May. There, Brianna held a GPA of 3.767. She was an honor student all four years and ranked 15th in her class of 234. At Belvidere, she was a member of the National Honor Society, tennis team and the bowling team. Brianna was also very active in FFA where she received the Sheep Proficiency award for two years. She is also active in 4-H and was a recipient of the State Achievement Award and was involved in several 4-H leadership activities. Brianna is attending the Rock Valley College for an associate’s degree in agribusiness and then will pursue a four year degree. Following is a portion of Brianna’s scholarship essay: “My Dad had raised Shropshire sheep for 23 years when I was born. My involvement with sheep started at birth. I went with my dad and mom to every show they went to. I started showing before I was old enough for 4-H. It was obvious what breed of sheep I would raise. I have been in 4-H raising Shropshire sheep for 10 years. I have 18 brood ewes, four yearling ewes, two stud rams, and 10 lambs in my flock. My responsibilities to flock management increased as I got older. When I was younger I was able to help in feeding, bedding, :…washing and training my

Brianna Brockmann lambs. As I got older my duties increased. I feed all the sheep, give shots, worm, and dock tails. I help unload hay and straw. At lambing time I check the ewes and help the lambs nurse when they are born. I wash and shear my sheep for the shows. Before going to the show I load the truck and trailer with feed, bedding, and the supplies I will need. Learning about scrapie was important because I need to know to keep my flock less susceptible to this disease. In 2007 and 2008 I was the Illinois Shropshire Promoter. I was chosen the 2009 and 2010 Illinois Shropshire Ambassador. I like promoting my products I raise, lamb and wool. I enjoy promoting the Shropshire breed and educating people about the sheep industry. I am the vice-president of the Boone County Sheep Producers. I have given two county sheep clinics to 4-H’ers. I brought my sheep for the county livestock judging and clinic. I donated a registered Shropshire ewe lamb to the Boone County Sheep Producers Lamb Award to give to a 4-H member who wanted to start a sheep production project. I wanted to give another youth my opportunity to learn about raising sheep _______ Page 47
and the agriculture industry. I also bred this ewe lamb free of charge to help the 4-H’er build his flock. I have shown my sheep at many county, state and national shows. I have exhibited my sheep at the Boone County Fair 4-H, junior and open shows. In the 4-H show I have had nine Overall Grand Champion Ewes and Rams with my Shropshires. I have won the 4-H and Junior Open showmanship in each age division. I received the 2011, 2012, and 2013 4-H Sheep Herdsman Award. At my Section 6 FFA show I had the Champion Ram and Ewe Overall and won showmanship. I have attended many All-American Junior Sheep Shows. My very first one was in Milwaukee, Wis. The other shows included East Lansing, Mich. (two years), Des Moines, Iowa, and Greenville, Ohio. In 2012 I had the Shropshire Reserve and Champion Ewe. At the 2013 AAJS I had the Champion Ewe Fleece, 1st Showmanship in my age group, 1st Intermediate in the judging contest, essay, photo, and T-shirt design; 2nd Skillathon. I enjoy going to these shows and participating in all of the challenging competitions. I have taken my sheep to the Illinois Shropshire Spectacular Show and Sale for the last nine years. This show and sale has also been the breed’s national sale a few years. In 2013 and 2007 I had the Grand Champion Ewe. My sheep have sold to many buyers from different states and coast to coast. I plan on selling at this sale again this June. Last year I sold a ram lamb which was the Grand Champion Ram at the Ohio State Fair Shropshire Open Show. I have shown at the Illinois State Fair Shropshire Open Show in Springfield, Ill. for eight years and have had several champion ewes and rams. My favorite place to show is at the North American International Livestock Exposition in Louisville, Ky. To me it is the grand finale of the show season. I have shown there for many years. I have had many champion rams and ewes in the junior and open shows including my 2013 Grand Champion Ewe in the Junior Show. Raising and showing sheep has given _______ Page 48
me so many opportunities and awards. In 2013 I won the Illinois State 4-H Award and attended the National 4-H Congress in Atlanta, Ga. 2014 I won the Leadership, Citizenship, Professionalism Award and attended the Premier 20 Leadership Conference sponsored by the Illinois Farm Bureau. 2013 I received the Illinois State 4-H Key Award and 2012 the Boone County 4-H Key Award. 2012 I won the Boone County Outstanding 4-H’er of The Year. I received the Boone County Outstanding 4-H Sheep Exhibitor in the Junior, Intermediate, and Senior Divisions. In FFA I won the 2013 and 2014 Section 6 SAE Proficiency Award for Sheep Production. By showing sheep, I have traveled to many places. I have gotten to meet kids from other states that have the same interest as I do. By having sheep as a project, it has helped me personally to understand how much work it is to provide proper feed and care for animals. I feel very lucky to raise sheep. Some people will never get the opportunity

to raise larger animals to experience how much hard work and time they require. It has shown me that animals depend on you for all their care. I decide on what kind of job I will do to take care of them, a good job or a poor job. The results will be seen when I go to sell or show them. Raising sheep has helped me for my future because it has taught me responsibility by taking care of them. I am very excited to start the next journey in my life, which is the path to my career. The life skills I learned from raising sheep of communication, planning, organizing, stress management and self-motivation I will use for activities in and out of school. These will also help in my career. I am determined to make my best better. Seeing a lamb born and raising that same animal for many years is very rewarding. I learned that hard work pays off in raising, showing and selling sheep. By producing sheep I am truly involved in the agriculture industry and proud to be part of it. My sheep
has enriched my life through the agriculture education I have acquired. The knowledge I gain builds every year and will last forever. Thank you for the opportunity to be considered for this scholarship. Congratulations to both of these young Shropshire enthusiasts. The ASRA is very proud of the young people and look forward to supporting their youth activities.
2015 Scholarships Two $400 awards will be available in 2015. Students are encouraged to apply for these scholarships as long as they are currently enrolled in an under-graduate program and directly involved with Shropshires. Applications, available at www.shropshires.org, are due June 1 in the office of the ASRA. Only complete applications which will include official transcripts of all high school and college work completed along with two letters of recommendation will be considered.

Young breeder’s first All-American is a blast
to be involved with a great group of people and organization. Thanks to all of you for working hard to help keep all of this going.
By JoAnne Green, DVM Oklahoma My sons, Joseph 12 and Jonah 8, have just joined the breeding sheep industry. Jonah is a new member of the Shropshire Association with a ewe and hopefully soon to add more. Joseph is now a new member of the Hampshire Association with a ram and a ewe. We have raised market lambs for two years and have enjoyed the joys of lambing season. Helping the new babies into this world and watching them grow up to be show lambs has been an amazing experience. Both boys are active members of our local 4-H club in Wynnewood, Okla. We also farm and raise cattle, thanks to their hard working father, Joe Green. We attended the All-American Junior Show in Hutchinson, Kansas on 4th of July for the first time. It was a blast. Everyone was super friendly; we had a great time. The boys participated in skillathon, judging, the basketball tournament and exhibited their lambs. Jonah showed his Shropshire market lamb he affectionately calls the Atomic Bomb, they also attended lamb camp together. While big brother Joseph exhibited his January slicksheared ram and won his class. We were all so excited and made tons of new friends. As a parent, I feel spending time with your family at these events is priceless. We have made lifetime memories and feel fortunate

A Breed on By Randy Rife Breed Historian
Enthusiasm. Aggressiveness. Positive Attitude. Ingredients of Success! Let’s look back at our Shropshire breed. During the late 1800s through the early 1930s, there were more Shropshires registered in this country than all other breeds combined. They were truly the “Farm Flock Favorite.” By the mid to late 30s, Southdowns began to dominate the wether shows and most Shropshire breeders started selecting for shorter, thicker, less productive wool-blind pumpkins. Shropshires quickly lost their prominence on the family farms across America. During the 1950s, a few far-sighted, progressive breeders made a commitment to select for, and breed larger, open faced, more productive animals. Some went to England and brought much larger, _______ Page 56
quote, “modern” Shrops, back to infuse into their flocks. My first exposure to this enthusiasm was through Lowell Douce, who called on my dad every couple of weeks, selling feed. Finally, after about three years, my dad bought in and Lowell sold him nine older cull bred ewes in September of 1961 to start a small flock for us kids (I was just 14 at the time and we had not experienced sheep on our farm before). Lowell projected that enthusiasm, had previously been a county 4-H agent and knew all about nurturing young folks to get them involved. He never stopped bubbling with exuberance over Shropshires! I was in Chicago when he won Champion Ram in 1971. This was a most unexpected surprise and he was totally overjoyed with this first “Big Win” after a lifetime of dedicated efforts. His aggressive enthusiasm had finally paid off. Farrell Shultz of DeGraff, Ohio was one of the most progressive, genuine breeders in the history of the breed. He was definitely a kingpin at infusing this new blood. During the 50s, he brought “Tern 19” and “Sir Winston,” _________________________ Shropshire Voice October 2014
the two very best stud rams available, along with several females over from England that really left a mark at advancing Shropshires after they had dropped out of fashion. The Shultz flock was dispersed in December 1962, just after our first year with sheep. Many, many of the top breeders of that day used Shultz stud rams. They were truly the “Flockmasters of that era! Another tireless promoter was old Gavin McKerrow of Wisconsin. That family had production sales in late July at their farm on odd years. He and his daughter, Isabell Brown, each brought several modern Shropshires over from England and shared that breeding across the country. As I remember, a couple of weeks prior to one of their sales in the late 60s, I wrote Mr. McKerrow inquiring about a modern, open faced ram from his upcoming sale. Over the following week, he fired back three lengthy letters on beautiful farm stationary with information and photos of different rams in the sale that he thought would work in our young flock. I

attended a couple of those sales and enjoyed the wonderful supper and social gathering provided the evening before on the lawn of their home. The entire clan genuinely projected enthusiasm for our breed. Gavin, his father, George, and also son, Will, each tirelessly served as our National Association president through the years. What a family of stockmen that truly loved our breed. I saw this same level of dedication to advance our Shropshires breed from Everett and Libby Glasgow in Illinois, Elwin

_______ Page 57
Newcomer of Ohio, Doug Chambers in Oregon, along with many others over the following years across the nation. Then when we got into the 1990s, our breed again followed the direction of the Southdowns and decided to slick shear all Shropshires for exhibition and sales. This was a very tumultuous time! It was extremely hard for a lot of folks to accept such a radical change but progressive breeders realized that something had to be done to regenerate enthusiasm for our breed. We had been put on probation for Louisville’s junior show from lack of numbers. Young exhibitors and their families didn’t want to take the time to learn to competitively fit and were very disgusted with getting beat by a high-dollar custom fitting job. Slick shearing paved the way for dramatic improvements in the quality of the sheep shown. Slick shearing did not allow for covering up broken tops, disguising sloped rumps, extra hide and other faults that the artful sculpturing of a great fitter could hide. I remember being at a major state fair and after the show handling the champion ram that was most beautifully fitted. The breeder had left at least three inches of extra tail when docking. He then let the wool grow all over that long stub and then masterfully trimmed and blended to make his ram appear to be much longer than he actually was. That stub tail would really stick out in a slick sheared show today. Now, nearly 20 years since the bold and controversial move to slick shearing, our breed is on the move. During those 20 years we’ve been blessed with wonderful breed Executive Secretaries: Dale Blackburn, along with his very supportive mother, Elsie of Illinois and now Becky Peterson of Massachusetts, have worked most diligently to implement the _______ Page 58
wishes of the board and membership while promoting our breed as one big happy family. The Futurity program under Mark McCabe’s guidance and direction, has been marvelous for our youth. The Shropshire Voice, our promotional booklet and our website, both under Rinda Maddox and her daughter Amanda’s expertise, have been wonderful billboards for Shropshires. Now we have the new “Start a Flock” programs designed to get new breeders off and running with our breed. Shropshires are on the move! On Sunday evening after last May’s Classic Sale, I had a call inquiring about how much our Junior Champion Ram had brought and who had bought him. This man had looked him over before the sale on Saturday morning and honestly I can’t recall his name or where he hails from. He said to me on that Sunday evening call, “My God, Shropshires are on fire!” What a compliment to each and every one in our breed. A few weeks later, I received the settlement check for the sale and while studying the results, noticed eight different young folks with a different last name from the same town in Tennessee. They had bought 12 ewe lambs in the sale. I thought, “Is this a foster family or what?” I called Alan Bruhin, the National Director from Tennessee and asked. “No,” he said, “that’s an FFA Chapter in west Tennessee who decided to try Shropshires in their program.” We have hosted OSU’s Judging Team for four years for practice judging with our Shropshires. Last spring Penn State’s team was here. What exposure for our breed. Let’s never let up promoting our breed. Let us all keep encouraging young folks to try Shropshires! I tell folks, we are not in the sheep business, we are in the people business! Let us all keep throwing more fuel on the fire! _________________________ Shropshire Voice October 2014

Remembering my Dad From Donnie Dubes My grandfather, R.T. Dubes, started in 1910 with Shropshire sheep. He showed sheep in county fairs and the Illinois State Fair. My dad, Don Dubes, Sr., carried on showing sheep starting in the 1950s. In the 1960s he showed at eight to 10 county fairs and ended at the Illinois State Fair. There was a time where Dad and I had 120 Shropshire ewes on three farms.

We liked to have two show flocks ready for fair time. When you spend five to six days in July in hot tents you need to bring one flock home to cool out and rest. Due to health reasons, in 2008, at age 82, Dad went out of the Shropshire sheep business. That was a sad day. Every Easter, after the sheep were gone, Dad reminded me “two more years” and the Dubes would have had Shropshire sheep in the family for 100 years. Yes, I miss watching lambs learning to use the walk ramp, to muscle them up, and the popping and jumping. Sheep were the Dubes’ heritage on life.
Remembering Don Dubes From Ed Mies Don Dubes’ father started with Shropshires in the Mattoon, Ill. area in the era of T.J.Allison and sons. Wool paid the farm taxes. Rams
JOY HAWKINS Joy Hawkins, 63, of Shedd, Oregon died May 18, 2014 with her family at her side. Those who knew and loved Joy witnessed a courageous eight-year battle with cancer. Joy was born in Shedd to Glen “Sadie” and LaVerne Hawkins. She lived in the Willamette Valley her entire life and graduated from Central Linn High School in 1969. Joy then attended Oregon College of Education (now Western Oregon University), where she received her Bachelors degree and later attended Lewis and Clark, where she received her Masters. Joy taught English for 30 years at four different high schools. She retired in 2006. She was very passionate about the English language and the students in her classroom. She was a huge sports fan and attended hundreds of games that her brother, nephews and niece played and coached in. She was an avid supporter of the University of Oregon athletic programs, as well, and while her disease made it difficult in the last months of her life, she still attended foot-

were sold at the Illinois Sheep Producer’s sales at the stock pavilion at the University of Illinois, often selling over 10 rams in that sale each year. In the 1930s and 40s Mr. Hampton was the U of I Shepherd. In the 1950s Don Dubes Sr. reestablished a flock to Sangamon County (Loami, Ill.). Grandpa R.T. Dubes helped fit the flock for shows. Jay and Max Dunseth, Jeff Handy and other helped keep two flocks at fairs at the same time. The Dubes’ flock was pretty much line bred with super growing lambs. Many Governor’s trophies for Best Pair of Lambs and Best Pair of Ewe Lambs lined the walls of the Dubes’ home. Several Champion rams and Champion ewes were won in the 1960s. Some outside blood from Ed Brown of Indiana, Trittschuh and Hartzell of Ohio, Allison, Albin, Glasgow, Agrall, Craig and Mies were used sparingly. The main sires were always Don’s own bloodlines.
ball games this past fall at Autzen Stadium. Joy was also deeply involved in the purebred sheep industry, her life’s greatest work. She traveled across the country showing and selling her sheep and received multiple national awards. She was well known and respected in the community for her integrity and the quality of her flock. Joy is survived by her brother, Tom (Candy) Hawkins; nephews, John (Laura) Hawkins of Corvallis and Jason (Angela) Hawkins of Santa Barbara, Calif., and grand-nephews and nieces, Luke and Emma Hawkins and Will and Cal Hawkins; as well as too many members of the extended family to count. She is preceded in death by her parents. Joy was a loving sister and aunt. Her life touched and affected the life of so many. She will be greatly missed by everyone that knew her. _______ Page 61
