From the President I hope everyone has had a wonderful summer. We have had plenty of moisture here in Ohio to the point that it has been hard to make hay this year. I know that most of the state and county fairs are over and I hope everyone had a good show season. We had over 250 Shropshires shown at the Ohio state fair which was by far the largest breed show in Ohio. I hope that all of us will take the time to become a mentor to someone who is new to the Shropshire breed. The past two years we have had many new people come into the Shropshire Family here in Ohio. Four young people were given
$1500 for a starter flock by the Ohio Shropshire Breeders and Ohio Sheep and Wool Program and the winner of the National Starter Flock for 2015 is also from Ohio. Each one of these young people has been assigned a mentor to assist them in getting started. I believe that the mentors have benefitted as much from the experience as the young people have. The enthusiasm that these young people have for the Shropshire breed is huge. So I encourage each of you to work with a new breeder, it will not only benefit them but will provide a great benefit to you also. Jim Percival, Xenia, Ohio

From the Secretary Hello from the Shropshire office! We’ve just crossed the line into September and the real autumn will be here before we know it but not without a few more summer like days. I try to keep an eye on the weather in other parts of the country just so I know how our members are getting along with their crops. I know some areas are very dry and others are recovering from lots of rain. Here in Massachusetts it has been relatively dry with some spotty storms producing enough rain to get by. I just hope we don’t have to endure some of those tropical storms that come up the coast and create a lot of problems this time of year. I guess by the time this issue is out, we’ll know how we did in that department. We’ve had a terrific spring sale season and an exciting beginning to the show season with a great All-American and some state fair shows. The Starter Flock winners are off and running with new projects and the youth are really enjoying their Shropshires. The office has had a busy summer. Registrations have remained steady all through August where they usually peter out by mid month. We are up by just about 100 head over this time last year and that is a very positive thing. Transfers are down only slightly but many, many sheep are being sold to first time Shropshire owners. Some of you may have noticed that the registration certificates look different than they did earlier in the year. Good observation! This is the result of something many fear, but most believe will never happen, a computer crash. I have been working along quite nicely for seven plus years on the computer purchased when I started as the Shropshire secretary in 2008. It ran on the Windows XP operating system and operated the sheep registry software owned by the American Hampshire Association. When _______ Page 4
XP was no longer supported by Microsoft, I spoke to the Shropshire Board of Directors with the concern that a seven-year old computer with old software may not be dependable. I was instructed to research the options and report back at the next meeting. On the morning of July 15, I turned the unit on and nothing happened. Gulp! I tried it again and nothing. Breathe deep! I guessed the operating system and/or the hard drive failed and made a couple of calls to find out what to do next. I took the unit to a local tech who said the hard drive was OK and saved the contents but the program data was difficult to identify and I was sure it was toast! When you think of the pedigrees of 39,000 + sheep, that is an awful lot of burnt bread! I spoke several times with two other breed secretaries that had retrieved their data and moved on to a new system and found a person who could locate the data. It did not appear that the old software could be reinstalled so that began a search for a new program that could keep pedigrees, ownership records and members’ accounts. After a couple of anxious days the data was found and determined to be complete as of the day before the crash. Incidentally, the backups I had been doing as instructed by the software owner didn’t include the data so were essentially useless and the corrupt operating system was not allowing automatic backups. The Board of Directors met by teleconference one evening and chose to purchase a system owned by the Continental Dorset Club and written by a Dorset breeder who also was a programmer. The data was sent to him and the conversion was pretty much seamless from my end. With a new computer also in place, I was back to registering sheep 22 days later on August 6, much to my relief! In those 22 days I still had work com__________________ Shropshire Voice
ing in and these breeders needed papers to go to shows with so I had been researching the sires and dams on sheep presented for registration through previous applications and producing a list I began to refer to as “temporary plates.” A board-approved letter was sent with each list explaining the situation and vouching that the registrations had indeed been applied for and that the parents were indeed registered. I am thankful that this was accepted by more than one state fair as proof of registration and ownership. This worked temporarily but these sheep, nearly 300, still needed to be registered. I am happy to report that by August 17, these were caught up and all work was current. The whole thing is but a mere memory now. A heartfelt thank you goes to Elena at the Big E for finding and unlocking the registry data, to Frank Tiffany for designing the new registry system and making it work and to Deb Hopkins in the Dorset office for shepherding me through this near disaster. So, I can now attest that a crash can happen to anyone and that any important files should be saved somewhere safe and accessible. The new registry is now backed up continuously on an external hard drive and the Cloud and I am breathing a lot easier these days. And this is why the new papers look different. This column is typically where I air my views. The only one that comes to mind that affects the office proceedings is the very common request of late to perform ownership transfers based on a picture taken of a registration paper on a cell phone. Quite
often these need to be done that day as the transfer is needed for a show tomorrow. I hesitate to do this for the following reasons: I need a signed and dated record of sale (the back of the paper) in order to record the transfer for the new owner. If I can see that has happened by the image submitted I have to print a new paper at the owner’s expense and perform the transfer and then fax or email both sides of the complete transfer and then mail the certificate. My concerns are that perhaps a very strict show staff may not accept a faxed or emailed copy, that the ownership dates may be fabricated to make the animal eligible to show and that it may leave two sets of papers which can lead to confusion. I know that with our instant information society, the temptation to wait is strong but unfortunately sometimes we just need to do things the old-fashioned way. So, my request is that exhibitors plan ahead and send transfers through the mail leaving enough time to process and return. If there are time constraints, please insert a note and I will do everything I can to make it work. I take my job of ownership correctness as seriously as I do pedigree correctness and I appreciate the cooperation of the Shropshire owners out there to make it ship shape. I look forward to seeing Shropshires breeders and exhibitors and their families soon in Louisville. I always enjoy hearing about peoples’ successes through the year and other life stories. I’ll see you then! Becky Peterson
Sound, productive Shropshires with style and substance. This is what we strive for in our breeding program.

Board of Directors Meeting Minutes Friday May 8, 2015 Eaton, OH The meeting was called to order at 10:07 a.m. by President Jim Percival. Present were Brad Slutz, RJ Creamer, Danny Rogers, Alan Bruhin, Cody Hiemke, Rick Adams, Mary Ann Keck, Mike Elsbury, Mandy Swartz, Re Call, Jim Gruenhagen, Tim Roberts and Secretary Becky Peterson. Absent were Bob Dinsmore, Darrell Dockter. Becky had previously distributed the minutes of the teleconference held Feb. 8. Brad Slutz moved to accept the secretary’s report as printed. RJ Creamer seconded and the motion passed. Secretary’s report accepted. Becky had sent the financial report as of April 30 and reviewed it briefly with the directors. She noted that the figures did not include the cost of the May Voice production nor the income from the sale of its advertising which accounted for the difference in the AR and AP compared to last year. The net income showed a loss at this point of $556.63 which is actually about $2000 less than the 2014 loss at this point. Registrations are up by 102 head over same period last year. Transfers are up by 88 head. Membership is holding steady. RJ Creamer moved to accept the Treasurer’s report. Danny Rogers seconded the motion and the report was accepted. Voice & Website – Rinda Maddox had written a letter to the Board requesting that her fee for Voice and website coordinator be lowered. It had been $100/month or $1200/year. She thought it could be distributed more toward the website and submitted an invoice for $600 for the year. After discussion it was decided to leave the fee unchanged and allow her to “subcontract” to Amanda Rull for the website work as necessary. Amanda already receives $700 per year to maintain the website. Becky was instructed to send Rinda $1200 for the year’s work. Brad Slutz asked about using more photos on the website. Becky tries to get show and sale reports and photos up as soon as the results are official. Sometimes there are delays. There is also a Facebook page where photos get posted, too. The photos Becky takes at events are available to anyone who wants them by email. _______ Page 6
NAILE – Alan Bruhin attended the NAILE Sheep Advisory Meeting in March and reported on some of the discussion there. Alan reported that there are some ownership rule changes for the junior show and they are working on early release problems. Becky spoke with the manager at NAILE who said the unofficial schedule included a three day junior show and a Monday open Shropshire show. Becky had applied to have another Stars of Louisville Sale and that will happen again on Saturday as before. Production – Cody reported a Shropshire Consortium has been formed by several breeders who are working to sell rams to commercial flocks and will work with NSIP records. Starter Flock – 14 applications for the ASRA Starter Flock award. Several of the applicants already owned one or more Shropshires and were therefore ineligible. The chosen winner is 12-year-old Justin Weckler of Beavercreek, Ohio. The award will provide $1500 for Justin to purchase two or more ewes at any sale throughout 2015. Becky noted that $1685 had been pledged from 15 persons during the fundraising efforts and excess will be held for the next year. The Starter Flock program needs to be promoted more in the western regions. The Ohio Shropshire Association is also awarding a stipend to two other youngsters in Ohio, Bailey Towery and Bo Wolford. Futurity - Becky reported that there were eight yearling ewes renominated for this year, 11 nominated from the sale in Louisville and one nominated this spring for a total of 20 for the Yearling Ewe Futurity. So far there have been 50 ewe lambs nominated this spring plus the Classic nominations. The futurity nomination rules were reviewed. Cody Hiemke moved that the rules be clarified to say that ewes must be nominated and sold through a single sale to be eligible. Mike Elsbury seconded. Motion passed. RJ Creamer moved to clarify that privately sold ewes will not be eligible. Motion seconded by Mary Ann Keck. Discussion followed. Motion passed. A request was made by Randy Rife to allow sheep that were nominated and bought back be eligible at a subsequent sale. Discussion followed. Feeling was the nomination fee buys the opportunity to market the sheep to a junior and buying a sheep back or setting a high minimum __________________ Shropshire Voice
price removes the ability for the youngster to purchase it. Cody moved that for every sale, each ewe nominated and receiving an active bid, nomination fee will be assessed. Mary Ann Keck seconded. Motion passed. There was discussion regarding the number of ewe lambs required for a futurity eligible online sale. The number required is now five. Does this keep a quality smaller breeder from having futurity-nominated lambs in an online sale? Alan Bruhin moved to table until the November meeting. Mike Elsbury seconded. Motion passed. It was noted that photos of nominated ewe’s ear tag posted with the online sales are required and they must be readable. Rick Adams brought up offering higher points to regional Shropshire shows for the futurity. This will be put in front of the futurity committee. Fund Raising – Becky had asked people to bring saleable items to the Classic for a silent auction to benefit the scholarship fund. Ten items were receiving bids. Breed Type – There was no official report. It was agreed that Shropshire body type has been more consistent. Breed character about the head is often subject to interpretation. Perhaps a photos depicting acceptable versus unacceptable type could be put together for a Breed Type Education display. DNA committee had no report. DNA collection database is a good idea but is difficult to sell to the membership. Maybe testing could be done on a volunteer basis. Costs and other details need to be investigated. More information needs to be made available to the membership to clear up the misconceptions that are present regarding the program that had been previously discussed. There is still a possibility of multi-trait tests in the future which would provide a service to those participating. The genomics testing possibility would require that more Shropshire flocks be involved with NSIP. National Sheep Association – no new information has come out.The show to be held in Reno in conjunction with the Nugget Sale has been cancelled. No ASRA funds have been spent on this program. Mike Elsbury moved with a second from Mandy Swartz to withdraw support until more information comes out. Discussion followed. Motion pass with 1 opposed vote.

Old Business Shropshire Store – Jim Percival said that the vendor who was going to produce and sell the promotional items has disappeared and that he has a new vendor lined up. Sale reports Indiana Premier Sale – Mike Elsbury said that there was a big crowd, prices were less than anticipated. There were 16 futurity nominations. Spring Fling sold seven of 15 for a $433 average. New Business Mary Ann Keck made a plea for donations to help fund the Midwest Junior Preview Show. Becky noted that the regional youth support funds of $300 for the South West region were directed to this show. Becky discussed the decision made last November during the DNA discussions to require scrapie tags on registration applications and papers. The majority of applications come without scrapie tag numbers. If a breeder was to record that number and the tag is lost and replaced with a new tag, the registration paper must be corrected to match the sheep, creating extra paperwork and expense. Becky asked that the Board consider rescinding that decision. So moved by RJ Creamer and seconded by Re call. Motion passed. In response to a previous question about creating a flock book as part of the registration activities, Becky had spoken with Jeff Ebert of Associated Sheep Registries about the database now in use. He said that their tech person could make a flock book or import other masses of data at an additional cost. Jeff also said they were working on new version but did not have many details. Becky said that current database runs on Windows XP and is old and is concerned about the safety of the system and is getting no tech support from ASR. Jim appointed a committee of Cody, Brad and Becky to research a new system and report to the Board in November. Next meeting – it was decided to wait until the NAILE schedule was done to set a board meeting and member meeting time. With no further business, Rick Adams moved to adjourn. Seconded by Jim Gruenhagen the meeting was adjourned at 11:55 a.m. Respectfully submitted, Becky Peterson _______ Page 7

The junior breeding sheep show begins on Saturday at about 3:00, again utilizing four rings. Shropshires are slated to show first. The show continues on Sunday. The National Junior Shropshire Sheep Association provides a traveling trophy to the Champion Ram and Champion Ewe. ASRA and NAILE offer a total of $2635 in premiums for this show. The January Ewe Lamb and February Ewe Lamb classes will be split if more than 30 entries are checked in.At the conclusion of the junior breeding sheep shows, the Champion Shropshire Ewe will be eligible to compete for the $1000 Supreme Champion Ewe Award. Another excellent Shropshire entry is expected for the National Shropshire Show on Monday. Tim Fleener of Robesonia, Penn. will serve as the official judge. $3645 is offered in premiums. Open show exhibitors are reminded that they will be assessed an additional $12 per head entered and will be invoiced directly from the Shropshire office. These entry fees are to be paid prior to the show. Exhibitors are reminded that all Shropshires are to be slick shorn within five days of the show from the knees and hocks up and from the poll back. No wool is to be left above the knees and hocks or on the belly or flanks. __________________ Shropshire Voice
The Board of Directors will meet at 11 a.m. on Sunday and the Annual Meeting of the Members is scheduled for 6 p.m. Sunday. Please note that there is an opportunity for paid members and open show exhibitors to nominate a judge for the open Shropshire show in 2016. A ballot box will be located in the breed display area. Please take the time to submit the name of a judge for next year. There are a few new sheep division rules for 2015. Each rule addresses some of the challenges of keeping the world’s largest indoor sheep show organized and running smoothly. Please look the premium list over to avoid uncomfortable surprises.
H H H Stars of Louisville While you are in Louisville be sure to take in the seventh Stars of Louisville Shropshire Sale on Saturday, Nov. 14 in the sale arena, just off the sheep facility, near the “office trailer.” We have been very fortunate to have been able to retain the opening time slot in the day’s sale events. We will begin our morning with the entries being evaluated for a sale order at 8:30 a.m. (EST).The entries will be available for buyers’ inspection. The order of sale will be posted and the sale will follow as soon as possible after 10 a.m. in order to maintain the schedule of the remaining breed sales of the day. Danny Westlake of Marysville, Ohio will serve as auctioneer. Terms of sale are cash or good check paid on sale day. If you are unable to attend, any member of the sale committee can handle a bid for you but requests for mail bids should be directed to Sale Manager, Becky Peterson. The sale committee consists of Chairman Jim Brandt and Dennis Avery, R.J. Creamer, Mark McCabe and Jim Isler. As in any other sale, ownership transfers will be made in the ASRA office after the sale and will be returned to the buyer as soon as possible.

Nancy Miniter, a Massachusetts sheep breeder, vet tech and ultrasound technician, will scan ewes for pregnancy status. The resulting information will be announced at the sale block. Consignors have been asked to guarantee that sale entries are free of the “spider gene” and be resistant to Scrapie by being either QR or RR at codon 171. A veterinarian will be on hand to issue health certificates. If your state requires an entry permit, please contact your state veterinarian’s office ahead of time to make the necessary arrangements. All sheep will be identified by a USDA approved ear tag or tattoo. For a few other sale perks, consignors will be able to nominate ewe lambs entered in this sale to be eligible to compete in the seventh Shropshire Yearling Ewe Futurity in 2016, if purchased by youth buyers. The winner of the 2014 Yearling Ewe Futurity was a ewe lamb purchased in this sale in 2013. Also, sale management has been able to allow consignors to retain rights to show their entries in the Junior Shropshire Show later that day or in the open show on Monday. This encourages the breeder to consign a sheep that he considers worthy of showing in the National Show in Louisville and making that quality available to buyers. We will assist purchasers who are not exhibitors in obtaining an early release for purchased animals only after the junior or open show if the animal is entered. Also, with exhibitors attending from across the country, consignors and the sale committee will work with buyers needing transportation of sheep purchased at the sale. A sale catalog may be obtained by contacting ASRA secretary and Sale Manager Becky Peterson at 413-624-9652 or shropsec@ hotmail.com. The catalog is also available on the Shropshire website www.shropshires.org. Consignors will be encouraged to provide photos of consignments ahead of time to be posted on the website with the sale catalog. So, be sure to join us in Louisville for the sixth Stars of Louisville Shropshire Sale. It is just another good reason to come and celebrate our 131st year of Shropshire sheep in the United States _______ Page 11
Annual shows and sales report Ohio Classic The second week of May brought warm weather after a cool spring, perfect weather for a sheep sale in Eaton, Ohio. The Shropshire Classic was held on May 8 and 9 as part of the Big Ohio event and was the National Sale for the third year. Shrops showed and sold as the last breed on both days. The late schedule did not seem to affect interest in the breed as the show was well attended and the sale boasted the highest average for the breed. 150 head were catalogued and went through the show ring on Friday, judged by Steve Myers of Ohio. An added job for Steve was the selection of the Best Breed Type Ram and Ewe of the sale to bring more awareness to improving breed character in today’s Shropshires. For the popular sale preview midday on Saturday, all of the ewes in the sale were lined up according to sale order and placed in wether racks allowing buyers to see them side by side.
At the same time R.J. Creamer brought out lunch for the social hour.Thank you R.J. for organizing this time to socialize and look at good sheep. After the snacks and the visiting, young Tyler Myers auctioned off the 12 advertising slots on the Shropshire website. All 12 months were sold for a total of $2575 to help run the website. Thank you to all who bid on and purchased ads. Check the website each month to see who is taking advantage of this opportunity. Saturday’s Shropshire sale was very successful with Danny Westlake working for an overall average of $801.67 on 135 head which was $43.79 over and above the 2014 average. The quality was exceptional and buyers found sheep that interested them and bid until they owned them. There were several young people who were purchasing their first Shrops at this sale. Seventeen of 105 ewes brought $1000 or more. The Avery Shropshires’ yearling ewe from Class 1 was the Senior and Grand Champion ewe. She brought $4500 from O’Neill

Genetic Convergence
We have a long history in Shropshires, our first ewes were purchased in 1953. Now we are managing a breeding program with a goal of genetic convergence of the three primary Shropshire types that have evolved over the years. Groverman 5517
Here two rams that are part of our ewe flock’s genetic profile. At left, the one representing Traditional/ English bloodlines, Groverman 5517 “Grover I”, Great Grandsire of our Hiemke “Sport Pepper” ram. Below, the one representing Frame type bloodlines, CLSF 622 “Tommy”. CLSF 622
Cabaniss 117-12
Our newest addition to the profile, at left, is a ram that will add current Shropshire Wether type bloodlines, Cabaniss 117-12, (purchased with Adams Shropshires).
NSIP performance EBV’s are a factor in our selection matrix. Refer to website for details.

2015 Scholarship recipients Two scholarship applications were received in 2015 and they both showed numerous academic, community, leadership and Shropshire accomplishments. Two equal scholarships of $400 are being awarded to Jansyn VanHorn and Dillon Harris.
Jansyn VanHorn Jansyn is of Garfield, Kansas and is the daughter of Ted VanHorn and graduated from Larned High School in 2014 with a GPA of 3.9. She was an honors student for all four years. She was active in student council and president of her sophomore and junior class. She participated in basketball, cheerleading, cross country and debate. Jansyn was a recipient of the Susan B. Anthony and Frederick Douglas Leadership award. She was very active in her 4-H Club, the Pawnee Peppers. Jansyn got a jump start on her college courses by taking classes at community colleges. She now attends Fort Hays State University in Hays, Kansas where she is pursuing a career in nursing.Again, in college she is a member of the National Honor Society. A portion of Jansyn’s scholarship essay: I have been involved with the sheep industry since I was born. I bought my very first Shropshire when I was eight years old. I have now expanded my flock to 20 ewes and two bucks. My favorite time of year is lambing season. I enjoy watching the lambs grow out and being able to pick lambs out for the show year from my own flock. I also enjoy selling my lambs to other 4-Hers across the state of Kansas and watching them show the lambs from my flock. I enjoy showing my Shropshire flock at the Pawnee County Fair, Nebraska State Fair, Kansas Junior Livestock Show, All-American Junior Show and the North American International Livestock Exposition. It saddens me that I will not be able to make it to the All-American because of an internship I have received for the summer at a local hospital. But I know it is only helping _______ Page 36
Jansyn VanHorn me in my nursing career. Although I will not be attending as many shows this year, I continue to help manage our flock and help younger members learn about taking care of their lambs, feeding them, showing, preparing for show and answering all the questions they may have.
Dillon Harris Dillon Harris is of Ludlow, Mass. He is the son of Amy Priest and grandson of Judy and the late Peter Harris. Dillon attended Ludlow High School for four years, taking several honors courses and graduating last June. Dillon is enrolled in the business management program at Westfield State College for the fall 2015 semester. He played two years on the Ludlow varsity volleyball team while responsible for the entire management of his family’s sheep program. Raised by his grandparents, Dillon has spent his entire life around Shropshires. He is __________________ Shropshire Voice

the junior leader of his 4-H Club the Pioneer Valley Young Shepherds and takes a huge part in mentoring its very young membership. He has always been willing to step up to the plate and take on those types of challenges. Dillon has exhibited his Shropshires all around Massachusetts and attended the North East Youth Sheep Show, the Big E, the All-American Junior Show, as well as the North American. A portion of Dillon’s scholarship essay: I would like to apply for the American Shropshire Registry Association Scholarship 2015. I am pursuing a bachelor’s degree of science in business management. I have been accepted to Westfield State University and am very eager to begin the education necessary to complete my goal. I believe that I am extremely fortunate to have a very meaningful life story that has made a profound impact on the person that I am today. Since the moment I was born I spent a lot of quality time with my grandfather. He was a very kind and quiet man. He had strong morals, a solid work ethic and was a person that could always be counted on. He maintained a full time career but also took great pride in being a sheep farmer. My grandfather was a person that I have always strived to be like. Growing up I remember spending as much time as I could helping him on the family farm. Together we would complete daily duties and tasks to keep the farm running and to make certain that the animals were properly cared for.We maintained a count of somewhere around 50 sheep on average. Every evening we would spend about an hour feeding the sheep. This time was well spent and in the meantime, engraved a close bond between my grandfather and me. Our endless chores did not curtail with the daily maintenance, however. Twice a year, my grandfather would make hay from our family fields in order to provide food for our sheep over the course of the year. Some of my best first memories were of sitting on my grandfather’s lap as we drove his 1950 Massey Ferguson tractor across acres of hay fields. The entire process took approximately four days _______ Page 38
Dillon Harris and the weather had to be just right. Together we would mow, tedder, rake and then finally bale the hay. This process always seemed to be accomplished on the hottest days of summer. Oftentimes our farm equipment would break down in the middle of our job. We strived as long as necessary to find a solution and yet resume without missing a beat. He always included me with problem solving and taught me to press on after enduring a setback. Although our work was hard and took a lot of effort, somehow it became fun and rewarding because we were able to accomplish so much together. We endured the elements of hard labor together but made wonderful memories while doing it. My grandfather began to teach me how to operate and maintain the farm equipment beginning at a very early age. He took the time to educate me on all of the responsibilities of owning and operating a functional farm. Growing up I had so much enjoyment watching and learning from my grandfather. He always made chores seem easy __________________ Shropshire Voice

and at the same time instilled an abundance of priceless and everlasting knowledge in me. I learned how to be responsible and how to have fun while at the same time taking life’s demands seriously. By the time I became a teenager I had learned so much from my grandfather. Soon I learned that my best mentor was battling a devastating illness, Glioblastoma Brain Cancer. My life would never be the same. I was 14 years old when my grandfather passed away. Before he left, he told me he wanted me to have his farm. He had been handing down the tools that were necessary for me to succeed in running our farm for years. He had a faith in me that encouraged a continued drive for success. Today I continue to keep our family farm running. I enjoy my daily responsibility and the never-ending challenges of being a farmer. As I drive his tractor through our hay fields I am taken back through a journey of everlasting

joyful memories that are engraved in my ever existence. My grandfather taught me how to be a responsible, hardworking and ambitious man. Most of all, he gave me the tools for success and to never give up. I am also a current active leader and mentor to the Pioneer Valley Young Shepherd 4-H Club. I enjoy educating my younger siblings on the responsibilities of farming as well as many other members of the group. I am eager to pass along the knowledge that I have learned to my peers and help them grow in many areas of their lives. I strive to encourage them to learn,

be responsible, take initiative, work hard, and be creative and to take pride in themselves. I feel that it is important to encourage myself and others to strive to be the best at what we choose to do with ourselves. I have a strong will for achievement and always incorporate the values and lessons that I have learned into my actions. I will continue to strive for success by working hard but never forget to take the time to make life fun and light-hearted. I hope to pursue a fulfilling career in business management and also continue on with the family farm. In the future, I will most likely seek a career in agricultural management. I believe I have a solid background in the agricultural area due to my hands on experience. I am very grateful for the knowledge that I gained from my upbringing and am proud of my accomplishments. I will continue to strive for success and always instill what I have learned in my future endeavors. Early on I was taught the values in life and know that with ambition comes perseverance. This fall I began my college education at
Westfield State University. I will commute to college and still be able to maintain our family farm. I am very excited to begin my journey and will apply myself to the best of my abilities. I would like to thank you for the opportunity to submit this application and hope for consideration of the American Shropshire Registry Association Scholarship 2015. Congratulations to both of these young Shropshire enthusiasts. We are very proud of our young people and look forward to supporting our youth activities. Two $400 awards will be available again in 2016. Students are encouraged to apply for these scholarships as long as they are currently enrolled in an under-graduate program and directly involved with Shropshire sheep. Applications are available on www.shropshires. org and are due June 1, 2016 in the office of the ASRA. Only complete applications which include official transcripts of all high school and college work completed, along with two letters of recommendation, will be considered.

Northwest Starter Flock The Northwest Shropshire Breeders Association have handed off their 44th Starter Flock. This year’s recipient is a young man, Kevin Slusser, of Scio, Oregon. Kevin is 14 years old and has been in 4-H five years. He has been raising Boer goats for market but is a member of a sheep club. His leadership and community service skills have prepared him to take on a small flock of two bred ewes and a ewe lamb.

The Starter Flock program is in its second year and proves that Shropshire folks are eager to get youngsters involved with the breed. This year instead of finding three suitable sheep for the award, the committee asked for cash donations in an effort to start a fund which would support the purchase of two or more Shropshire ewes at any sale during the year. The committee was excited to receive almost immediate donations in the amount of $1575 to add to the $300 that the Board of Directors moved from unspent youth monies in 2014. This year’s contributors were Chip Hallet, Sterling, Mass.; Knepp Shropshires, North Barrington, Ill.; Crimson Ridge Shropshires, Mark and Prudie Miller, Lafayette, Ind.; Erik Mrozinski, Rolling Prairie, Ind.; Alan Bruhin, Sevierville, Tenn.; Schoolhouse Shropshires, Xenia, Ohio; Danny and Cynthia Rogers, Monrovia, Ind.;
Austin and Trent Bechtold, North Manchester, Ind.; Snyder Shropshires, Monmouth, Ill.; Emily Washburn, Gouverneur, N.Y.; SS Shrops, Jim Gruenhagen and Family, Davenport, Iowa; Avery Shropshires, Bremen, Ind.; Brockmann Shropshires, Garden Prairie, Ill.; Step Ahead Shrops, Gilson, Ill. and Plainview Farms, Doug, Tammy and Chris Whittaker, Laura, Ill. These Flock Starters join Mark McCabe, Glenn and David High and Randy and Julie Rife who provided Shropshire ewes for the 2014 award. Many thanks to these breeders for helping to get young people interested in Shropshires. Applicants are required to submit an essay outlining their interest and experience in sheep, defining their goals and establishing a budget for their project. This year, 14 applications were received and evaluated by the judging committee. Four applications were received from Tennessee youth, four from Ohio, two from Maine, one from Michigan, two from Massachusetts and one from Indiana. The opportunity was promoted in various sheep circles and publications, farm

papers and extension service. The winning application was submitted by Justin Weckler of Beavercreek, Ohio. Justin is 12 years old and has a little experience with sheep by working with his 4-H leader and her flock. Justin kept a lamb there and was very excited about the prospect of showing and breeding her. In March 2015, there was a tragic fire and several of the sheep on the farm were lost along with his ewe. Justin’s application made it pretty clear about the things he had learned working with his sheep and what he had hoped to accomplish and was easily chosen as the winner for this year’s award. Justin used the $1500 award to help purchase a yearling ewe and two ewe lambs at the Ohio Classic Sale last May. His mother writes: “Justin has shown his sheep at his county fair (Greene), the Ohio State Fair junior and open shows, the Miami County Fair, and the Highland County Fair. He has been learning more about feeds and medications. Justin was invited by Randy Rife to an AI day at his farm. He was able to help with some of the prep work. He learned how to shear and sheared his own sheep for fair, with some help on the heads and part of legs. Randy Rife and Mark McCabe have taken an interest in Justin and have been available to answer all of Justin’s questions. Nancy Conklin has been a great resource for him being his 4-H advisor and allowing him to keep his sheep at her farm. He loves his sheep and is so thankful to the American Shropshire Association for this opportunity.” For more information about the Starter Flock program, information is available on the Shropshire website. To learn how to contribute to the program and be a Flock Starter, contact Becky in the Shropshire office.

P
Our History reserved By Randy Rife Breed Historian Jim Isler of Prospect, Ohio came across a 1910 magazine, “American Sheep Breeder and Wool Grower” on eBay about seven years ago. What a find it was! The 68-page 9x12-inch magazine was in pristine condition with many photos and illustrations beautifully done. It was published monthly at Chicago for 10-cents a copy or $1 for a subscription. On the second two pages of the magazine, there are 15 Shropshire ads on the left and 16 more on the right page. How impressive! There were 31 different Shropshire folks included from 11 states and Canada. On the fourth page, another 13 ads promote Shropshire breeders along with advertising for a dipping tank and worm powder. Definitely a by-gone era! This wonderful magazine is an interesting glimpse into our Shropshire history. Thanks to Jim for letting this 100 year old magazine leave his care to be sent to me and on to Rinda for use in this issue. _______ Page 54
A selection of some of the articles are shared on the next few pages with so many more that would have been worthy for these pages. Due to converting the large pages of the Sheep Breeder and Wool Grower down to the small page format of the Voice, we apologize for the small size of text. Perhaps you have a magnifying glass handy but we also have posted several of the pages on the Shropshire.org website where you can easily enlarge them to view. __________________ Shropshire Voice

Editor American Sheep Breeder: Am sending you pictures of the famous Allendale wolf which was killed on the railway here. The affair created quite a sensation at the time and we sold over 50,000 postcards after the wolf was killed. Am also sending photograph showing sheep washing scene near Carlisle. One of our well known stock firms here, Messrs. Maxwell & Sons, wash annually 50,000 head of sheep – no small job either. ... Now, the Allendale wolf. This wolf escaped from private grounds at Shotleigh Bridge and did so much damage to sheep in the district that hunts were organized to effect its capture. Hundreds turned out and the chase was pursued for days without avail. After forty sheep had fallen victims the news of its destruction on the railway was received with great relief. The wolf was found cut in two, but they skillfully joined the parts together and I took the photograph I am sending you. The animal

was a full grown gray wolf 56 inches long and 30 inches from foot to shoulder with a tail 15 inches long and weight of 5½ stones, which in this district represents about 80 lbs., so you can see this Allendale wolf was a good big fellow. Am sending you also photograph of the Carlisle Otter Hunt meeting at Wetheral. This scene may interest some of the “old folks” in your country who used to follow them.
