From the Secretary Hello from The Big E where we’re are making final preparations for the 2016 National Shropshire Show! This is always a particularly busy time of year for your secretary, even without the National event. The Eastern States Exposition is the “State Fair” of New England and is the fifth largest in the U.S. in terms of attendance. It runs for 17 days and, thankfully, I am not present for all of them but 12 days is close enough to get the full experience. Many of you may know that I provide the working sheep dog demonstration in the sheep show ring and have been since 1989. My husband, Hoop (aka Alan), and I have also been exhibiting our own sheep here since 1981 and we both showed here individually long before then. My father exhibited his milking shorthorns as a youngster and often told of being evacuated from the fairgrounds during the hurricane of ’38. There are lots of Big E stories of family and friends over the years and I am excited to be here during the Centennial Celebration with my dogs, my sheep, my family and the National Shropshire Show. Thank you to Donna Woolam, former Shropshire breeder and director of agriculture and education here at the Big E, for all of your help in making this a memorable year at the Big E! This year has been a busy one on the show and sale front. There were two spring Shropshire Sales in Indiana in April, two in Ohio in May, and one in Illinois and one in Missouri in June, along with a few online sales. These resulted in 291 ownership transfers. The state fair exhibitions also proved fruitful with 258 head of Shrops exhibited at Ohio State Fair along. Many of the state fairs that have already been held have results posted in this issue and it is obvious that Shrops are alive and well in the showring. There have also been a good number of registrations and transfers involving sheep of the production type. There seems to be good demand for tested __________________ May 2015

production as they are traveling from coast to coast, as well.As of August 31, registrations are up 2.71% over the first eight months of 2015 to 2234 head.Transfers are up a rousing 18.3% to 996. New adult memberships have more than doubled to 21. Renewing adult members are up 7.48% to 158. And the youth continue to be on the move with an increase of 4.88% in junior memberships. So Shropshire breeders can take a bow for continuing to promote their breed.   Normally the office work begins to slow down by mid-August but this year new work kept arriving, making finding time to get reports and articles for the national event and the Voice together a bit uncomfortable. But as I left the office on the evening of 9-13, all registration work that did not require problem-solving had been completed and mailed. I always do appreciate complete and correct applications that have been checked over before submission. It takes extra time to sort out incorrect registration numbers, non-existent sires and of course the incorrect owner of the dam. I always start on these mysteries with an emailed inquiry to the applicant. I appreciate those that respond quickly but now and then answers don’t come and I will start phoning. I really do try not to hold up work but I also cannot guess at what sire is supposed to be on the form. So please do check over your applications and it will help avoid delays on both ends! I also try to meet everyone’s needs as far as ownership transfers for upcoming shows. Please try to plan ahead and send in the original registration paper with the transfer information completed on the reverse with time enough to process it and return by mail. With today’s instant information on the web, it would seem that it would be simple to do transfers this way but it often results in a fair not excepting faxed or emailed registrations or owner’s confusion with duplicate papers. Something that really _______ Page 3

tickles me though is finding an application that has been completed obviously by a youngster. I remember doing my own years ago and it really is another skill building chore. I would like to give a gold star to the young members that take this project on for themselves! One subject that always comes up at events is Breed Standards. There are of course many opinions about what today’s Shropshire should look like. Please support the Breed Standards committee in their efforts over the past year to help clarify the discussion. Several small suggestions have been made to specify

the display of one trait or another and hopefully the revisions will be presented to the membership soon. I think the largest hurdle yet to overcome will be the education of our judges and new breeders. Perhaps the association should make a financial investment in judging clinics or written material that would help lessen the controversy. Thank you to those breeders and exhibitors for supporting our national events and promoting their Shropshires. I hope to see a lot people in Louisville in November. Happy Shropping, everyone!

counting language and that all was well. All information requested by the auditor had been provided. There was no further discussion. RJ Creamer moved to accept the account as presented. Mike Elsbury second. Motion passed. Mike inquired about the two CD accounts at the Illinois Harvard Bank and reminded Becky to get them moved to Massachusetts when they come due next year and also the Harvard checking account when convenient. Voice & Promotion – Rinda was not able to attend but wanted to encourage advertising in the Voice and using the Breeders index. So far this year the income from the Voice advertising has exceeded the cost of production and mailing by $638. Becky reported that there had been inquiries from members regarding pocket record books. Rinda provided a quotation for 1000 books, similar to the ones that were made for the 125th Anniversary, of $599 for black and white; $648 for one color on the cover. This figure includes the redesign of the cover, no changes inside. Discussion followed. Mandy Swartz moved to order 1000 with a black and white cover and have them available for the National Show in September. Jim Gruenhagen seconded. Motion passed. There is a possibility of including advertising and a color cover in a future order. NAILE Updates – Becky reviewed the NAILE Sheep Advisory meeting that Danny Rogers attended. The wether show will move

Absent were Cody Hiemke, Bob Dinsmore, Darrel Dockter, Matthew Anderson and Danny Rogers. Three guests were present: Chip and Britt Hallet from Massachusetts and Steve Elsbury from Indiana. Secretary’s report – Alan Bruhin moved to dispense with the reading of and accept the minutes from the Feb. 21 teleconference that Becky had previously distributed and published in the last Voice. Mike Elsbury seconded. Motion passed. Treasurer’s report – Becky had also previously passed out the financial reports as of 4/30/16 and reviewed several items. The Balance Sheet showed a total of $49,782.46 in assets, down by $423.92 same period last year. The Profit & Loss Report showed a net loss of $1216.60 for January through April. to another room in the complex and will take place at the same time as the breeding sheep show, which will run all day Saturday and Sunday until completion. Ribbons will not be printed with the class name.A couple of breeds will be moved up in the schedule with the intention of finishing the show schedule on Thursday instead of Friday. Hopefully the schedule will be finalized soon. 2016 National Show – Becky reported on the plans for the National Show at the Big E. The show will be judged on Sunday 9/18 at 2 p.m. Annual meeting will be Saturday evening and will have a buffet dinner. The BOD decided on a noon meeting on Saturday. Becky will get a location. Chip and Britt Hallet were present representing the Northeast Shropshire Association. Junior Activities – Starter Flock Award – The committee reported that there were six very good applications received. The winner chosen was Ashlyn Reddick from Girard, Georgia. Becky reported that she was present for the show earlier in the day and was studying hard. Becky listed the donors to the program this year and will get addresses to the junior association and the winner to send thank yous. The AAJS Shropshire show will be on Saturday, July 2. The junior association will try to have a cookout lunch for the exhibitors and their families on Sunday. Plans are also forming for a junior association meeting during the NAILE Show. Futurity – Becky reported that so far, prior to the Classic Sale, 29 yearling ewes and 38 ewe lambs have been nominated for the 2016

Futurity. Yet to be recorded are the Classic, Great Lakes, Spectacular and Midwest Sales. Breed Type – Committee is looking for photos of various breed characteristics, showing both desirable and undesirable traits of Shropshires, including ears, face color, wool cap, leg wool. There are other breed websites that have very good pictorial displays of their breeds. Jim instructed the Breed Type Committee to meet and report to the BOD at the September meeting. Old Business Futurity Rule Update – In view of the confusion regarding an earlier sale this year, Rick Adams moved to add the following to the third paragraph of the Futurity Rules:To have a new sale designated as a Futurity Sale, notification must be made in writing to the Board of Directors at least three months in advance of the sale. This allows buyers and sellers plenty of time to make their consignment and purchasing plans. Discussion followed. The motion was seconded by Mike Elsbury. Motion passed. Further discussion followed. Mandy Swartz moved to approve the Midwest Elite Sale, held earlier in April, as a Futurity sale for 2016. Mary Anne Keck seconded. Motion passed unanimously. Next Meeting to be Saturday, Sept. 17 at noon during the Big E at a location to be determined. With no further business to come before the Board, Mike Elsbury Moved to adjourn at 5:39 p.m. with a second by RJ Creamer. Meeting adjourned. Respectfully submitted, Becky Peterson

There will be a ballot box located in the breed display area. Please take the time to submit the name of a judge for next year. There are a few new Sheep Division rules for 2016. Each rule addresses some of the challenges of keeping the world’s largest indoor sheep show organized and running smoothly. Please look the premium list over to avoid uncomfortable surprises. 159 Shrops show, sale at Classic The second week of May brought warm weather after a cool spring, perfect weather for a sheep sale in Eaton, Ohio. The Shropshire Classic was held on May 13 and 14 as part of the Big Ohio event and was the National Sale for the fourth year. Shrops showed and sold as the third breed on both days. 153 head were catalogued and, with added entries, 159 went through the show ring on Friday, judged by Aaron Crome of Illinois. Aaron also selected the best breed type ram and ewe of the sale to bring more awareness to improving breed character in today’s Shropshires. RJ Creamer and Ohio pals took on the task of a cookout dinner for Friday night in an adjoining barn. They amicably served hamburgs, hotdogs, baked potatoes and related goodies to all attending. The get-together was a big hit and was enjoyed by many consignors, buyers and their families. We appreciated their efforts and hope to see it happen again next year. For the popular sale preview Saturday, all ewes were lined up according to sale order and placed in head rails allowing buyers to see them side by side. Following the preview, RJ tried his hand at auctioning off the 12 advertising slots on the Shropshire website. All 12 months were sold for a total of $2250 to fund the operation of the Shropshire website. Thank you to all who bid on and purchased ads. Check the website each month to see who is taking advantage of this opportunity. New SW Director Matthew Anderson Matthew Anderson is the newly elected director for the Southwest Region. Originally from Acampo, Calif., Matthew and his family currently reside in Macon, Mo. Since last fall Matthew Matthew Anderson has accepted a Senior Loan Officer position with Yosemite Farm Credit in Oakdale, Calif. Matthew purchased his first Shropshire ewe from Verne Hoffman of Mokelumne Farms in 1989. Matthew’s wife, Christie, also purchased some Shropshire ewes from Mokelumne Farms in the mid 1990’s and the two met as competitors at junior shows throughout California. They were married in June of 2000 and have two children, Emily, 13 and Andrew, 11, who make the fourth generation of Andersons to breed and show Shropshires. The Anderson’s have exhibited their Shropshires nationally since the early 2000’s and have shown in over a dozen states and sold sheep into even more states. Anyone that knows Matthew very well is aware of his vast knowledge of Shropshire pedigrees, both old and new. Matthew collects anything Shropshire related and has a large collection of Sheep Breeders and Banners. Some of his Sheep Breeders go back to the early 1930’s and he is always on the lookout for ones he doesn’t have. Matthew is happy to serve on the board and intends to continue to bring honesty and integrity to the Shropshire breed. _______ Page 12

It was the largest All American yet! The 2016 All American had 372 exhibitors from 25 states actually exhibiting 1667 head of the over 1900 head entered. The MSU Facility was filled to the brim and it was a long and great weekend of showing sheep! The total numbers shown by breed are as follows: Southdowns 304; Polled Dorsets 160; Hampshires 256; Shropshires 183: Tunis 106; Natural Coloreds 57; Oxfords 127; Cheviots 58; Montadales 48; Shetlands 43; Border Leicesters 30; Horned Dorsets 15; Romneys 29; Lincolns 78; Cotswolds 24; Dorset Advantage 40; Corriedales 25 and Dorpers 58 head. The All-American Show is a sheep show where the major focus is on the exhibitors and their families. Even though many awards are given out over the course of the weekend the show is designed for our junior exhibitors and their families. The exhibitors participated in many events besides the breeding sheep and market lambs shows including the 3-on-3 basketball tournament, pizza party, skil-a-thon, judging contest, pie and ice cream social, lamb camp, wool show, Saturday night BBQ and funhouses, promotional contests, full course breakfasts, individual and team showmanship competitions and scholarship programs. CHAMPION EWE AT 2016 OHIO STATE FAIR R & A Shrops 2212 – DOB February 2016

We have only been in the Shrops for couple of years now but this is the best female we have raised to date. We are striving to keep some frame on our Shrops but also put muscle, rack shape and big hips into them. This ewe has it all. You can see her at Louisville in November. Special thanks to our good friend and our show mother Dale Davies

Shropshire Scholarship Each year the ASRA offers two $400 college scholarships to students enrolled in an undergraduate program and directly involved with Shropshire sheep. Unfortunately this year only one application was received so only one award will be made to Lindsay Yeager of Fortville, Ind. Lindsay is the daughter of Bob and Lori Yeager and attended Greenfield Central High School, graduating last June. She is enrolled at Purdue University where she will pursue a degree in Agriculture Education. While in high school, she maintained a GPA of 4.218 and was president of the senior class, a member of the National Honor Society and the Student Council. She participated in the Student Leadership Academy and the FFA. Lindsay received the Principal’s Leader-

ship Award and the Jessica Barnhart Courage Award. She was named Top German Student as well as Top Social Studies Student and Exchange Club Youth of the Year. Lindsay carried several 4-H projects including sheep, photography, genealogy, rabbits and served as club president for two years. While involved with Shropshires, she served as the Indiana Shropshire Queen and mentored younger members. She and her family have a small flock of Shropshires which she cares for. The ASRA congratulates Lindsay on a job well done and wishes her success in her college career. Two $400 awards will be available next year. Applications are available on www. shropshires.org and are due June 1, 2017 in the office of the ASRA. From left, Fred Buckham, George Buckham and Denny Avery In 1961, 16-year-old Denny Avery heard about a bred ewe sale in Lansing Mich. and he and his dad attended. There he met two people that would be instrumental in his sheep breeding program, Fred Buckham and his twin brother, George. Denny bought the yearling ewe pictured from the Buckhams. Two weeks after this picture was taken she lambed. The Buckhams invited Denny to come up to Michigan to show his sheep. He had never shown outside his county fair before and for the next few years he showed at the Michigan State Fair. Denny would take his ewes to the Buckhams every year and have his ewes bred. “It wasn’t all about money back in those days,” Denny said. “They wanted to see a young person succeed and were glad to help him do just that.” In 1966 Denny sold his sheep and went into the service. In 1979, when his son was nine years old, Denny decided to get back into sheep breeding and went to visit Fred and George who sold him a ewe and a ram and got to start him back in the Shropshire business. “Fred and George Buckham offered me a world of help and advice over the years,” Denny said. “I often told people ‘if you will just be quiet and listen when Fred is talking, you will learn something you need to know about sheep.’ Both George and Fred were very instrumental in my successful program.” Denny first got involved with Shropshires on his grandfather’s farm in 1951.

CALVIN JOHN VERDUIN Calvin John Verduin, 78, formerly of Waddington, Gouverneur, Dansville, and most recently Berkshire, New York, passed away June 9, 2016 following a period of declining health. Born on May 6, 1938 in Marion, NY, he was the son of the late Maurice and Louise (Lagerveld) Verduin. He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Hazel ‘Pat’ (Whalen) Verduin and his daughters, Lynn Verduin and her husband Brian Trippany, Susan Verduin and her wife Shila, Sandra and her husband David Rowland. Also surviving are his sister, Lois Marsh; his granddaughters: Janelle Trippany and husband Kevin Goodrich, Kaitlin Trippany and fiancé Tyler Simmons; great grandson, Henry Goodrich, and several nieces and nephews. A man of many talents, Calvin worked on the building of the St. Lawrence Seaway, was a dairy and beef farmer for 30 years and then transitioned into raising sheep for the last 35 years. He worked for the New York State Department of Transportation, first in Potsdam, then was the DOT Supervisor in Gouverneur for 20 years until he retired in 1996. His real passion was raising and showing his flock of sheep throughout the Northeast, including many champions, grand champions, and several supreme grand champions. Calvin was also a beekeeper, produced maple syrup, enjoyed building furniture using oak, maple or cherry wood from his own land to create outstanding pieces, built barns, and with his daughter Susan, built a cabin in the northern Adirondacks.Whenever he had some free

Calvin Verduin time, he liked to hunt, fish, or trap or play the harmonica, the banjo or the 12-string guitar with zest. Calvin served as the Sheep Superintendent of the St. Lawrence County Fair and as a member of the fair board for at least 20 years, while supporting the local 4-H Clubs. His life was privately celebrated by his family. MacPherson Funeral Home, Newark Valley assisted the family. Condolences and memories may be written in his guestbook at macphersonfh.com. His family would appreciate donations to the Alzheimer Association.

Thank You!!!

Julie and I would like to thank all the folks of New England for a great National Show at the Big E. The hospitality extended to us from Debbie Hopkins and her staff, from Becky Peterson, Elaine Jaycox and all the Shropshire enthusiasts in the Northeast was phenomenal. The Big E was a fantastic fair in itself. We truly had a grand time and a wonderful experience! We will always treasure the memories. Thank you again. Randy and Julie Rife

In

an

attempt to provide something different and also something useful and informative, here goes this issue’s “history article.” Warren County sets just south of us, with the county seat of Lebanon, Ohio. The town of Lebanon is known for “The Golden Lamb,” with the claim of being the oldest Inn west of the Alleghenies. Many presidents have stayed there and Julie and I have dined there. In our paper today is a recipe that won Grand Champion at the 2016 Warren County Fair in the food category for “Fruit Salsa.” It was won by Vickie Thomes Suit and she says it is good paired with salmon or mild tasting fish. I think it would be really good with leg of Shropshire lamb. Let’s try it!

Fruit Salsa 1 Tbsp. canola oil 3 Tbsp. thinly diced red onion 2 Tbsp. jalapeno, seeded and diced ¼ c orange juice 2 tsp rice wine vinegar 3 Tbsp. strawberry jam 2 lemons, juice only 1 Tbsp. hot sauce 1 c pineapple, diced small 1 tsp granulated sugar 2 c fresh watermelon, diced small ¼ c strawberries, diced 1 kiwi, peeled and diced small 1 Tbsp. chopped fresh cilantro 1 tsp minced fresh mint

In _______ Page 50

In medium saucepan over medium heat, add the oil and allow to warm 1 to 2 min. Then add the red onions and warm for 1 min. Next, add the jalapenos and warm for 1 min. Then add the orange juice and vinegar, allowing the liquids to reduce and only coat the bottom of the pan, 2 to 3 min. Reduce heat to low, stir in jam and allow to warm 2 min. Remove from for heat and cool for 5 min. In a medium bowl, whisk together the lemon juice, hot sauce, pineapple and sugar. Then add watermelon, strawberries, kiwi, cilantro and mint. Toss together and finish with lemon juice mixture. Stir. Allow to set 20-30 min to ensure flavors have blended.

my search for recipes, Don and Re Call sent a text, “Peter D’Ambra from Skowhegan, Maine always served them lasagna and red wine when they visited.” The very next day they added, “Joe Laverie

and his wife of Winsted, Conn, served spaghetti and huge homemade Sicilian style meatballs.” The life-long friendships, comradery and memories from just sitting down and breaking bread together is what life is all about. I’ve always said, “We are not in the sheep business, we are in the people business!”

and Joan High, longtime Shropshire breeders from Lexington, Ohio, lost their daughter, Pam, several years back after a courageous battle with cancer. Pam worked hard to promote the sheep industry in Ohio. For several years, she was in charge of the “Taste of Ohio Café” lamb booth at the Ohio State Fair. The following recipe she prepared and served for various events, including the Ohio Shepherd’s Symposium, various banquets and our Ohio Shropshire Breeder’s Association Picnic. She was a true promoter of our industry. You’ll love this recipe! Pam High

Butterflied Leg of Lamb with a Raspberry Jalapeno Sauce Boneless butterflied leg of lamb (Approximately 5 lbs.) Marinade: 2 Tbsp. garlic, minced 1 c. Dijon Mustard ½ c. honey 1 c. dry white wine ground black pepper, coarse ¼ c. cilantro, chopped Mix all marinade ingredients and place with lamb in a one-gallon zip lock plastic bag. Marinate at least 2 hours or over-

Serves 8 to 10 night. Remove lamb from marinade and place on grill over well heated coals or low-medium flame gas grill. Turn lamb two or three times while grilling. Lamb will caramelize or blacken while cooking due to the sugar content of the marinade.
