Members invited to recommend judges for NAILE At the Annual Member Meeting in November 2010, the members present voted to allow ASRA members to nominate judges for the following year’s NAILE show. Since then there has been a nomination ballot box located in the Shropshire promotion booth in the breed display area. Following the show, the nominations would be tabulated and the list of nominations would be reviewed by the Board of Directors and a list of three of those nominees would be submitted to the NAILE office. This method was reviewed during the February Board of Director’s Teleconference and at the May BOD meeting. The Di-

rectors opted to do away with the ballot box at NAILE and encourage all currently paid senior ASRA members to recommend a judge for the next year’s show via a written ballot that would be printed in the October Voice. The deadline to return judge recommendations is December 1. The BOD would consider all the recommendations and submit a list in order of preference to the NAILE office. One recommendation can be submitted per paid senior or adult member. Please take this opportunity to make your choice known by mailing, faxing or emailing this form to the ASRA office by December 1.

From the Secretary Happy “Late Summer” to everyone from the Shropshire office. We will be well into autumn when folks read this. I just hope we are not experiencing an early winter at that time. Rumor has it in the Northeast that it will be very cold with lots of snow. Ugh. I have been very busy in the office. From May to mid-August, the vast majority of the day office time and several evenings a week is spent processing registrations and transfers with the rest of the time in keeping the finances straight, making sure checks are applied correctly and the bills

are paid. Generally work was turned around in 3-5 days, except for the usual questions that need to be sorted out or waiting for payments to arrive.    I certainly appreciate applications that are checked over before submission and payments made at the same time. Following up on questions and chasing checks uses valuable time. I appreciate members submitting transfers at the time sheep are bought or sold and not waiting until they are already at the fair. I do everything I can to enable exhibitors

to show their sheep, but sometimes it just doesn’t work out and a fair will not accept this kind of paperwork. One other situation that always comes up is the need for a signed ram lease form. This is when the owner of the mothers on the registration application is not the owner of the sire. I don’t worry too much about rams owned by other family members but I do need the permission of the owner of the sire to register the lambs. If a person co-owns a ram with another member, then a lease is not needed for that particular ram. I know there are lots of informal partnerships and agreements to trade the use of rams but if you are not the registered owner or co-owner of the sire of your lambs, you will need a lease form signed by the actual owner in order to proceed. Lease forms are available on the website and are on the backside of the work order forms you receive with all of the work from the office. If you allow a young breeder to run her ewes with your ram for a couple of months in the fall, please supply the proper form to her when she takes her ewes home. In this day of cell phone photos, I would think it would be very simple to satisfy this request. I do keep all lease forms on file here, and also keep a list of ram leases for the year, so a member does not have to supply a lease form for the second batch of registrations of lambs by the same sire of the same year. The same applies to selling semen for A.I. breedings. If you do not own the semen, you will need a lease form. If you sell semen from your ram for future use, please supply a form. Registration numbers are up for the second year in a row. Over the first eight months of this year 2332 sheep were registered, 98 head over the same period in 2016, and 157 over 2016. Transfers were up slightly also with 1029 transfers from January through August, up eight head over 2016 and 187 head over 2015. This is all a very good sign. In spite of the fact that the Shropshire breed appears to be moving in

a few different directions, I am excited that each one seems to be “forward,” depending on its purpose. I am very glad to see that there are still sources of the “old style Shrop” and that these breeders are active and passionate about their characteristics. Better yet, these sheep continue to go to new homes where the effort is continued. Most of these are production flocks and are involved with the NSIP, making wise breeding decisions based on heritable traits. I know not everyone is a fan of this type of sheep but we need all types to be able to add pieces to our own programs. The industry is not static and needs to be able to adapt. We remember not too many years ago when the “as tall as possible” sheep were all the rage. Then we began to see that “tall was not all” and we started seeing more conventional and useful types of sheep. All breeders still need to place a lot of emphasis on the breed type of their Shropshires. It is our hope that a new publication will be available soon with the details of the breed standards. I was not able this year to get to any of the state fairs in the Midwest but the results I’ve been seeing are pretty impressive with several shows with outstanding entry numbers. I did get to the All-American Junior Show in Wisconsin and that was quite an event with Shrops being well represented. It is so neat to see these youngsters all working at it for the entire weekend. The main show season is pretty much over the hump with just a few state fairs left and then there is the big dance in Louisville. I expect large junior and open show attendance. The Shropshire enthusiasts will be pretty busy for three days straight while there as the breed will be showcased on the green shavings. Make plans to go if you can. Meanwhile, I hope everyone has enjoyed a prosperous year with their Shropshires and will have a great crop of fall lambs and great plans for a spring season. I’ll see you in Louisville! _______ Page 5

Kyle Gross wins Starter Flock The Starter Flock program is in its third year and proves that Shropshire folks are eager to get youngsters involved with the breed. Cash donations were collected to support the purchase of two or more Shropshire ewes at any sale during the year. The committee was excited to receive donations in the amount of $1525 to add to the $150 left over from 2016. New contributors this year were Justin and Kim Weckler of Beaver Creek, Ohio; Noah Collins and Family of Morristown, Tenn.; Adams Shropshires of Bonfield, Ill.; Tom Slutz and family of LaMoille, Ill.; Creamer Shrops of Prospect, Ohio; Orchard Valley Farm of Leyden, Mass.; BWB Farms of Martinsville, Ohio and Sand Meadow Farm, the Nicholson Family, of South Windsor, Conn. Returning sponsors include SS Shrops, Jim Gruenhagen Family of Davenport, Iowa; Chip Hallet Family of Sterling, Mass.; Danny and Cynde Rogers of Monrovia, Ind.; Plainview Farm, the Whittaker Family of Laura, Ill.; Knepp Shropshires of North Barrington, Ill.; Schoolhouse Shropshires of Xenia, Ohio; Kevin Klotz Family of Richmond, Ind.; and Alan Bruhin of Sevierville, Tenn. They join Emily Washburn of Gouverneur, NY; JN Dirlam and Sons of Mooresville, Ind.; Jim Isler of Prospect, Ohio; Crimson Ridge Shropshires, Mark and Prudie Miller, Lafayette, Ind.; Erik Mrozinski, Rolling Prairie, Ind.; Austin and Trent Bechtold, North Manchester, Ind.; Snyder Shropshires, Monmouth, Ill.; Avery Shropshires, Bremen, Ind.; Brockmann Shropshires, Garden Prairie, Ill.; Step Ahead Shrops, Gilson, Ill. who pledged funds in one or both of the last two years, and Mark McCabe, Glenn and David High and Randy and Julie Rife who provided Shropshire ewes for the first award in 2014. Many thanks to these breeders for being Flock Starters and helping to get young people interested in Shropshires. Applicants are required to submit an

The opportunity was promoted in various sheep circles and publications, farm papers and extension service. This year, three applications were received and evaluated by the judging committee. Two came from Tennessee and one from Nebraska. The winning application was submitted by Kyle Gross of Kennard, Neb. He purchased one ewe lamb at the Ohio Classic in May and a yearling ewe at the Oklahoma Black & White Sale in April. Kyle is 11 years old and recently wrote: “I have had a lot of fun this summer showing my R&A Shropshire ewe lamb. We went to _______ Page 7

quite a few shows including the Midwest Junior Preview Show and the All-American Junior Show. My ewe lamb was Overall Champion Registered Ewe and Champion AOB at the Nebraska State Fair 4-H Show, Grand Champion Breeding Ewe at my county fair, and Reserve Supreme Champion Ewe at the Fremont 4-H Expo. She was also third Overall Breeding Ewe at the Loup Valley Livestock Show. All animals at this show had to be champions at their county fair to be eligible to participate. It has been fun showing such an elite ewe lamb all summer and exposing other exhibitors to the breed. “As for my Heeg Crazy H yearling ewe, I decided not to show her so I could get her bred for early lambs. She is A.I. bred to the Adams ‘Rocket’ ram for January lambs. I am looking forward to the arrival of my first Shropshire lambs. I would like to thank the American Shropshire Breeders Association for these great sheep and helping me get started in the Shropshire business.”

Becky reviewed all of them briefly. The Balance Sheet showed total assets of $48,006.98 including all funds still at the Harvard Bank in Illinois and the two accounts in Massachusetts. There was discussion over the Accounts Receivable which Becky noted was mostly the advertising invoices in the recent Voice but there were some old invoices that have gone unpaid. Becky then reviewed the P&L report which showed an overall loss of $3827.92. She briefly discussed differences between the current year and the previous year. The restricted funds for some of the special activities of the ASRA showed a total gain so far of $859.54 which was mostly due to the Starter Flock donations. A motion to accept the Treasurer’s Report was made by Mary Anne Keck and was seconded by Danny Rogers. There was no further discussion. The motion passed and the report was accepted. Committee Reports Voice & Promotion - There was no report but there was discussion about the use of a half page space in addition to the front or back page ad. It was decided to continue to offer that space to the cover advertiser but not to allow a credit for unused space. Also the center spread ad oppor-

tunity must be made as one ad and not shared by two breeders. There was discussion about the use of social media at sales and shows. The intent of posting photos of class winners and Champions is to promote the breed and the event and keep followers up to date on events and is not meant to advertise for any particular breeder or provide buyers with photos to evaluate prospective purchases. Becky makes every attempt to get photos up on the Facebook but may need assistance at very busy events. Stars of Louisville Sale – The NAILE contract for the sale has been signed and returned. The auctioneer has been contacted. The committee will work to get good sheep consigned and have a successful sale. Production – Rick Adams reports that there are new Shropshire flocks signed up with the NSIP program. There is a new NSIP flock in Wyoming that should attract attention in the range ram area. There is a NSIP Sale planned for Wooster, Ohio in August. This will be an opportunity to get more NSIP proven Shropshires sold in the Midwest and East. Shropshire Royalty – This is the first year of program proposed by the Shropshire Junior Association. There were three applications for the Princess and two for the Bo Peep. Both division winners were presented with a sash during the show earlier. Both girls were available to present awards in the sale show and will appear in several photos. Junior Activities – Alan Bruhin reported that there will be another educational activity during the Junior Association meeting at NAILE.This has proven to be very successful in the past. Mary Anne Keck asked about the possibility of including juniors from other breeds at this event and expressed interest in helping with the event. Perhaps a “Four Station Quiz” could be setup in the Breed Display Area at NAILE could be devised. Breed Character – Debbie Petzel has produced a preliminary photo display of the Shropshire characteristics. There is a video presentation in the works describing the Shropshire Breed Standards. She would like more photos from the Breed Type Committee to enhance the project. Starter Flock – there were only three applications received this year. One came quite early and the other two came just before the deadline. The winner is Kyle Gross from Nebraska. He purchased a yearling ewe at the Oklahoma _______ Page 9

Black & White Sale which is a live managed sale and has $1040 left yet to spend. At this time, only $1175 has been pledged for this year’s program with more than half of that coming from board members and there is $150 left over from 2016. It is hoped that the Junior Association can generate more donations. Futurity – So far there are 26 yearling ewes ($520 in the fund) and 42 ewe lambs ($840) nominated before the Classic Sale where the number should nearly triple. No sale fees had been paid as of April 30 but fees have been received since for the Indiana Premier Sale and Rife’s Online Sale. There was a question about the Illini All Breeds Sale where there was one Shropshire that was listed as a nominated lamb but no fee had been paid. That sale has not been an approved sale. Discussion followed about the original intent of approved sales and the present way of identifying Futurity animals. The board then recommended that the Futurity Committee allow any managed and established live sale be an approved Shropshire Futurity Sale following all of the rules that are in place. tabled during the February Teleconference). The current method was proposed at the November 2010 Annual Meeting where paid members at NAILE could nominate the judge for the next year’s NAILE through a ballot box and the list of nominations would be submitted for board approval. Since then, the BOD has approved the nominations in the order of the number of votes and the top three would be submitted to NAILE in that order. In 2017, the BOD reordered the list. There was discussion regarding whether this was the intention of the 2010 nomination method. It was suggested to change “nomination” to “recommendation.” Mary Anne Keck moved to use the recommendations for the NAILE judge made by the members at NAILE and have the BOD consider them and select three from that list to submit. Mike Elsbury amended the motion to have a form in the Voice to allow the membership to make the recommendations. The amendment was approved and the motion was approved. This will be placed in the October Voice and the deadline to return is December 1 so a list can be approved in time to submit to NAILE for the following year’s show. Shropshire Store – a new vendor has been contacted for the production of the Shropshire items. No other news available. Director attendance record – this was tabled from the board meeting last September. Bylaws state: Directors missing two consecutive meetings of the board will be placed on probation. If a third meeting is missed, such director shall be expelled from the board. It does not appear now that there are any board members in this situation. NAILE – Catherine Riley is the new assistant manager at NAILE and appears to be doing a good job. Becky went to the Sheep Advisory Committee meeting on March 9. A few changes were proposed: Add new minimal Showmanship pre-entry fee to help provide premiums and provide nicer belt buckles for the division winners; there is a committee formed to make plans for a commercial ewe show; the deadline to make ownership transfers for the junior shows has been changed from September 1st to October 1st, which is the same as the entry deadline; leadline would like to add a pair class. This would all be presented at the executive meeting in April. When the breed premium info proof came out, there were other changes: open show entry _______ Page 11

fees have increased to $18 and junior show entry fees to $15. Open show sheep will be released at 6 p.m. on the day of their show. Shropshire Junior Show will be Sunday, Nov. 11 at 8 a.m. Shropshire Open Show will be Monday, Nov. 12 following the Tunis breed. New Business Old Receivables and Outstanding Checks– Becky had made a list of invoices over 180 days old which included some older ad invoices from commercial advertisers. Discussion followed. Rick Adams moved to have Becky remove any invoices that she finds uncollectible over one year of age. Jim Gruenhagen seconded. Then Jim amended the motion to say that Becky present a list of invoices over one year that she deemed uncollectible to the Finance Committee to check on. Mary Anne Keck moved to approve the amendment and Jim seconded. The amendment and the motion passed. It was then suggested that if any of those accounts were to reactivate, the balance due would have to be paid and they would be on a cash basis. The secretary wishes to update the signers on the accounts at the bank in Massachusetts. The extra signers on the accounts now are past presidents Mark McCabe and Darrell Dockter. It was decided to update and have Re Call be the other local signer and add Jim Percival, also. Re can go to the said bank and complete the forms. Jim will have to send notarized forms. The accounts in Harvard, Illinois are to be closed out this fall and moved to Massachusetts. Audit/Compilation – The last review was for 2015 and was an expense of $1383. Re Call moved to have Becky obtain quotes from three CPA’s for a compilation and/or a full audit and present to the BOD in November. Then to proceed with one or the other that will include the

2016 and 2017 years. If none of the new quotes are accepted by the BOD, then proceed with a review of 2016 with the present accountant. Danny Rogers seconded the motion. Jim Percival suggested that the BOD recognize older member(s) that have been important to the association and to the breed. Jim Percival appointed a committee of Mary Anne Keck, RJ Creamer and Tom Slutz to make some recommendations for the initial award(s). Mike Elsbury noted that the Indiana Premier Sale was successful this year, making a profit of $500 and giving $1000 in “Shrop Bucks” to junior buyers. Mike also inquired about the chain of command at a meeting when a president or vice president is not available for, or drops out, of a meeting. Mary Anne stated that Roberts Rules of Order state that the only thing that can be done is to move for adjournment. It was then noted that the secretary is a member of the Executive Committee and would cover to fill the position and appoint someone to act as secretary for the remainder of the meeting. The question also arose of whether members of the various ASRA committees are required to be Board Members. Discussion followed and showed that any member of the ASRA with a strong interest in the function of a committee is welcomed to serve. The next board meeting will be at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 11. The Annual Meeting of the Members should be scheduled for Sunday, Nov. 12 at 6 p.m. Rick Adams moved to adjourn at 3:50 p.m. Motion was seconded by RJ Creamer. Respectfully submitted, Becky Peterson, Secretary

Last November’s Stars of Louisville Sale brought out a good selection of ewes.

9th Stars of Louisville to be held Nov. 11 While you are in Louisville be sure to take in the ninth Stars of Louisville Shropshire Sale on Sat., Nov. 11 in the sale arena, just off the sheep facility, near the office trailer. We have been very fortunate to retain the opening time slot in the day’s sale events. Entries will be evaluated by judge Jim Percival of Xenia, Ohio for a sale order at 8:30 a.m. The entries will be available for buyers’ inspection. The order of sale will be posted and the sale will follow soon after 10 a.m.. Danny Westlake of Marysville, Ohio will serve as auctioneer. Terms of sale are cash or good check paid on sale day. If you are unable to attend, any member of the sale committee can handle a bid for you, but requests for mail bids should be directed to Sale Manager, Becky Peterson. The Sale Committee consists of Chairman RJ Creamer, Jim Brandt, Dennis Avery, Mark McCabe and Jim Isler. Ownership transfers will be made in the ASRA office after the sale and will be returned to the buyer as soon as possible. Nancy Miniter, a Massachusetts sheep breeder, vet tech and ultrasound technician, will scan ewes for pregnancy status. The resulting information will be announced at the sale block. Consignors have been asked to guarantee that sale entries are free of the “spider gene” and be resistant to Scrapie by being either QR or RR at codon 171. A veterinarian will be on hand to issue health certificates. If you are planning to make a purchase and your state requires an entry permit, please contact your state veterinar-

ian’s office ahead of time to make the necessary arrangements. All sheep will be identified by a USDA approved ear tag or tattoo. Consignors will be able to nominate ewe lambs entered to be eligible to compete in the ninth Shropshire Yearling Ewe Futurity in 2018, if purchased by youth buyers. The winner of the 2015 Yearling Ewe Futurity was a ewe lamb purchased in this sale in 2014. Also, sale management has been able to allow consignors to retain rights to show their entries in the open show on Monday, Nov. 13. This encourages the breeder to consign a sheep he considers worthy of showing in the National Show and making that quality available to buyers. We will assist purchasers who are not exhibitors in obtaining an early release only after the junior or open show, if the animal is entered. With exhibitors attending from across the country, consignors and the sale committee will work with buyers needing transportation. A sale catalog may be obtained by contacting ASRA secretary and Sale Manager Becky Peterson at (413) 624-9652 or shropsec@ hotmail.com. The catalog is also available on the Shropshire website www.shropshires. org. Consignors are encouraged to provide photos of consignments ahead of time to be posted on the website with the sale catalog. So, be sure to join us in Louisville in November for the ninth Stars of Louisville Shropshire Sale. It is just another good reason to come and celebrate our 133rd year of Shropshire sheep in the United States! _______ Page 13

Shrops have success at the Classic For the fifth year the National Shropshire Sale was held with the Big Ohio Sale in Eaton on May 12 and 13. Shrops were the second breed shown and sold each day. 153 head were catalogued and judged on Friday by Bill Bryant Jr. of Ohio. Bill also selected the Best Breed Type ram and ewe of the sale to bring more awareness to improving breed character in today’s Shropshires. RJ Creamer and pals, Dave High, Rick Whiting, Rick Adams, Josh Sargent, Mike Pence and Jim Percival, took on the task of a cookout dinner for Friday night in an adjoining barn. They amicably served hamburgers, hotdogs, brats, baked potatoes and related goodies to all attending. The get-together was a big hit and was enjoyed by roughly 110 folks. We appreciated their efforts and hope to see it happen again next year. When dinner was over Jim Percival tried his hand at auctioning off the 12 advertising slots on the Shropshire website. All 12 months were sold for a total of $2925 to fund the operation of the website. Thank you to all who bid on and purchased ads. Check the website each month to see who is taking advantage of this opportunity. Saturday’s Shropshire sale was very successful with Danny Westlake and Gary Saylor working for an overall average of $708.71 on 132 head. The quality was exceptional and buyers found sheep that interested them and bid until they owned them. There were again several young people who were purchasing their first Shrops at this sale. Seventeen of the 100 ewes sold brought $1000 or more. The Creamer Shropshires’ Class Even Yearling Ewe was the Senior and Grand Champion Ewe. She brought $1700 from Bishop Shropshires of New York. The Reserve Senior Champion ewe was the Class Odd Yearling from City Limits of Illinois and brought $1250 from Mike Torrone of Pennsylvania. The next yearling to sell was another City Limits ewe going to Evans Shrops of Ohio for $900. Jadewood Valley’s yearling _______ Page 14

brought $2500 from Sierra Innskeep of Indiana. Two other yearlings crested the $1000 mark. Twenty yearlings sold at an average of $817.50. The 14 fall ewe lambs averaged $758.93. The class winner from Step Ahead brought $1050 from Tennessee’s Caleb Fritz. Rife’s second place lamb brought $900 from O’Neill Shrops of Pennsylvania. Glenn High sold a $1000 ewe to Luke Raudebaugh of Ohio. City Limits sold a $900 ewe to Charlie Majors of Tennessee and followed with an $1100 ewe lamb to Garrett Friesen of Indiana. New consignor Sand Meadow Farm sold a lamb for $450 to Bo Wolford of Ohio. Rife sold a good one to Rueber of Iowa for $1150. The Early January Class had some very popular entries. City Limits sold the class winner and Junior and Reserve Grand Champion and High Selling ewe to Ashley Fuss of Maryland for $2700 and then a $1200 lamb to Morgan Anderson of Wisconsin. Steve Elsbury received a winning $950 bid from C. Donald Call of Massachusetts. R&A Shrops then sold a $1250 lamb to Alexis Hickman of Indiana. Addisen Nicholson of Connecticut found a $1200 lamb she liked from Fritz Farms. At the end of the class 16 lambs averaged $793.75. Twenty Early February ewe lambs averaged $452.50. The class winner from Clark Shropshires sold to Noah Collins for $650. High Life Farm sold the next two lambs to Luke Raudebaugh for $600 and then Taylor Ruff of Ohio for $450. The last group of ewe lambs was the Late February Class that averaged $569.44 on nine head. This class had the Reserve Junior Champion from City Limits that sold to Ohio’s Hidden Acres for $1300. R&A then sold the next lamb in line to Starter Flock winner Kyle Gross for $1400. As the ewe classes ran out the pace picked up a little for the yearling rams. Though none of the champions came from this group, seven of them averaged $800. The class winner came from the Rife flock and sold for $1400 __________________ Shropshire Voice

to Petry Family of Ohio. City Limits sold the next ram for $1600 to Lesley Hampson Giles. 3G Shrops earned $550 from Bo Wolford on the next ram and the same price was paid for the fourth place ram from the Nicholson’s and sold to Crockett County FFA in Tennessee. The Fall Ram Class was the exciting one to watch sell. The Senior Champion was a Rife ram that went to Emily Petzel of Wisconsin for $3000. The next ram was the Reserve Senior Champion form City Limits. He was the high seller of the sale and went to Danny Rogers & Family for $3700. A $500 ram followed from the Melvin flock and sold to Hayden Meeks of Tennessee. Then Heeg’s Crazy H sold a $2200 ram to Lane Falch of Missouri. The average for the five fall rams was $1980. The January Class had 14 head sold, averaging $596.43. Steve Spayd of Pennsylvania bought the Junior and Grand Champion from Caleb Fritz for $2800. Next Logan Snyder of the same state got a Jadewood ram for $600. Majors sold a $400 buck to Double E Polypays of Ohio. The Reserve Junior and Reserve Grand and Best Headed ram came out of the February Class from City Limits and sold to Addisen Nicholson for $1400. Destiny Powell picked up the $900 High Life ram next. Majors found $950 on the fourth ram going to Erin English of Illinois. The six rams in this class brought an average of $708.33 The entire sale report and additional photos can be found on www.shropshires.org.

All-American again largest ever The All American Junior Show is in the books for 2017. It was a terrific event, held June 29 – July 2 at the Alliant Energy Center in Madison, Wis. and is the largest show ever in its 24 year history. A total of 510 exhibitors represented 32 states and showed 2011 sheep from 21 breeds. The Show Committee and Richard and Judy Shambow, the Wisconsin coordinators, did an awesome job getting it all to run smoothly – no easy task for an event of this size. Shropshires were shown on Saturday and ranked third with 205 head, including wethers. There were 67 Shrop exhibitors entered from 15 states. In addition to the show, the usual events, showmanship, skillathon, judging and promotional contests, 3-on-3 basketball and Fall Ram Lamb 1. Jaedyn Slutz Res. Champion Ram 2. Coral Nelson 3. pizza party happened, too. The entire event was accompanied by the National Junior Suffolk Show, as well. On Sunday, the Shropshire families got together for a cook out sponsored by the National Junior Association. We were very fortunate to have Brian Johnston and his family, Shropshire exhibitors from Wisconsin, handling the production of the meal, with help from Jon, Charlotte and Vivian Stephenson and Debby Petzel. Thanks also to Carol Slutz for providing the moral support in the grocery store! The exhibitors and their families enjoyed a nice get together on the grass under the trees away from the dust of the showring. Brian Schermerhorn judged the show.

Rylie Miller and Dalton Hicks receive Shropshire Scholarships Each year the ASRA offers two $400 college scholarships to students directly involved with Shropshire sheep and enrolled in an undergraduate program. Students must submit an application, two letters of recommendation and complete transcript by June 1. The program will continue next year and applications are available on www.shropshires.org. Rylie Miller of Lafayette, Ind. is one of the recipients this year. Rylie is the daughter of Prudie and Mark Miller. She graduated in June from the McCutcheon High School and is enrolled at Purdue University to follow a curriculum in agricultural sales and marketing. Rylie was an A student all through high school and was the valedictorian of her class. She received several awards and maintained a 4.0 GPA at McCutcheon. Rylie played JV soccer and basketball in her freshman year and was the FFA treasurer in her junior year and president during

her senior year. Over her high school career, she participated in the Livestock Skillathon, Crops Judging and Parliamentary Procedures, Livestock Judging, Extemporaneous Speaking, Scrapbook, National Honor Society and the Senior Leadership Team. Outside of school, Rylie was active in many 4-H projects and served as an officer, as well as a Farm Bureau Junior Board member. Here is part of Rylie’s application: “I am currently an active member of the junior and regular Shropshire Association. Over the years, I have worked hard to be an active member, holding many positions such as Indiana Shropshire Princess, Indiana Shropshire Queen, secretary, president, and Indiana Representative. Over the past two years, I have sat on the Start-a-Flock Committee and this past year I wrote, and got passed, a proposal to start a national royalty program within our breed.

“On a smaller level, at our county fair I have assisted in nose printing, teaching young members how to show and shear, and helping set feet and show extra animals on show day over the years. I have won many awards from county to state level such as Champion of Animal Care, Herdsman, Champion Fitter, and class awards. “I not only love the industry itself, but have worked hard to pass my love onto the younger generations. At my house we house and care for other member’s animals who may live in town and are otherwise unable to have livestock. Due to this “outreach program” I have made many friends who then in turn have shown at shows including the Indiana State Fair and purchased animals of their own. “At home I have many responsibilities including feeding, feed rations, buying feed and supplies, shearing, cleaning the barn, cleaning the pens, medications and vaccines, halter breaking, lambing, giving bottles, banding tails, nose printing, selecting and purchasing new animals, breeding decisions, and disinfecting.” The second recipient is Dalton Hicks of Stillwater, Okla. Dalton is the son of Leon and Kelly Hicks. He graduated in May from the Stillwater High School and is attending the Northern Oklahoma College pursuing an AgriBusiness Degree and intends to follow with Oklahoma State University. While at Stillwater, Dalton attained a final GPA of 3.33 and was an avid FFA student obtaining his State FFA degree and Star Farmer and sheep and several other proficiency awards. He also was on the 4-H and FFA Livestock Judging Teams. Away from school, Dalton had served as a 4-H reporter and secretary, Midwest Junior Preview Show Breed Director, as well as a director on the Junior Shropshire Association. Here is part of Dalton’s application: “My sheep project has involved up to 137 purebred registered Shropshire ewes and rams. My lamb flock first started when I bought my first lamb when I was eight years old. By creating a thorough breeding plan, I have been able to raise high quality lambs for my show string; once these animals finished showing, they are _______ Page 38

added to my breeding flock. Currently I have 38 ewes and rams. Each year the best of my lamb crop has been kept back for my show string. The remainder of my lamb crop is sold to other exhibitors to help offset feed, medication and operational costs. “I have also sold a number of brood ewes to reduce numbers. I have traveled across the United States showing these animals to help bring publicity and credibility to my flock. Through my hard work, I have enjoyed success at several major livestock shows. This past year I won Supreme Champion Breeding Ewe at the North American International Livestock Exposition in Louisville, the Midwest Junior Preview Show, the Houston Livestock Show, Ozark Empire Fair and the Oklahoma State Fair, as well as numerous other breed and reserve breed champion ewes and rams. I also have success at sales including the annual Stars of Louisville Sale. “Over the last 10 years, I have seen my roles and responsibilities grow tremendously. When I first began my Shropshire herd, my tasks were similar to most livestock exhibitors. However, as my flock numbers multiplied over time, so did my responsibilities. Over time I began taking on more important roles such as daily assessment of animal, coordinating medications for illness, vaccinations and worming. Instead of asking my father when lambs would be born, I began planning the breeding of sheep and utilizing CIDR inserts to control when the ewes would lamb. In addition, I began pulling blood to determine pregnancy and ultrasounds to determine exact dates, if needed. I learned lambing techniques from our vet including being able to turn and reposition breech lambs. “I was also tasked with beginning to supervise nutrition to best develop lambs and animals for show, utilizing the correct feeds and supplements and appropriate amounts to meet the individual need of each animal. I was also charged with general care of the flock, as well as grooming for show. Involvement in the sheep industry has taught me much and I owe much to the mentors I have had. I feel its lessons will extend to all aspects of my life. __________________ Shropshire Voice

paid off. I love showing with my friends because it creates good teamwork. It is fun to participate in quiz bowl, Skillathon and judging contests at fairs. I like to meet new people and make new friends during free time when I am not showing! I would like to promote Shropshires and while also getting more kinds into the Shropshire breed. I would love to wear a crown on my head and hand out awards to Shropshires in shows.” Taylor is 14 years old and shared: “I want to be a role model for the Shropshire breed. I am eager to share my knowledge and excitement for the breed with the younger generations as well as educate people outside of the community. I feel I will represent this breed well because I am a well-rounded member of the American Shropshires Association. I not only travel showing my lambs but I am also involved in 4-H, Junior Fair Board, Sheep Council and I also play travel volleyball. During my travels, I encounter many youths that are not aware of the breed, I enjoy educating them not only about the breed and the wonderful people associated with this breed but about livestock as well. It would be an honor to be named the Shropshire Princess.”

Last year a new program was proposed for the Shropshire youth by Junior Association president Rylie Miller. She had suggested a Royalty program would encourage youngster to participate more in the organization’s activities other than shows.Three applications were received for the Princess category and two for the Bo Peep. The selection committee comprised of Robin Pardus, Rylie Miller and Emily Petzel chose Addisen Nicholson of South Windsor, Conn. as the 2017 Bo Peep and Taylor Ruff of Mechanicsburg, Ohio as the 2017 Princess. Both were present at the Ohio Classic Sale and were presented with sashes to wear at sheep events to help promote the breed and had immediate photo ops while presenting awards in the show ring that day. Both of these young ladies have been at shows throughout the summer showcasing their Shrops. Nine-year old Addisen writes in her application: “I like working with the young lambs and getting them ready for shows. When my sheep do well I know that my hard work has _______ Page 40

Bob Benson is presented a lifetime pass by Indiana State Fair Board Bob Benson was born and raised in Ohio on a general livestock and crop farm. Sheep were a staple on the farm. He got away from sheep during college, but eventually went back to his roots. He spent 26 years with Monsanto Company and during a transfer to Indiana, he swung past the family farm and picked up his parents’ flock, and brought them home as a 4-H project for his sons, getting back into the sheep business. Bob has been active over the years raising Shropshires. He helped the boys with their sheep in the Hamilton County Fair, as well as the Indiana State Fair. They also showed the wool, as well. Bob has been a member of the Indiana Shropshire Breeders, as well as the American Shropshire Registry Association, for over 30 plus years. He was the chairman of the National Shropshire Show at the 1992 State Fair, as well as helped to secure funds for the show. Bob and his late wife, Florence, established a lamb cookoff during the state fair back in the 1990s. It was held in the sheep barn for three or four years and was successful in helping to promote lamb. Bob was inducted into the Indiana Livestock Breeders Hall of Fame several years ago. He now helps with that organization and announces the winners during the Grand Championship drive during the annual Indiana State Fair. Being an active member of the Hamilton County Sheep breeders for several years helped to support the industry, as well as the youth. Bob has been involved with the Indiana Sheep Breeders holding several offices including president and treasurer, as well as being a member of the national organization ASI, American Sheep Industry. His expertise has been invaluable to the organization. Bob was the announcer for the sheep shows, both 4-H and open, some 20-plus years during the state fair starting with Director Ray __________________ October 2017

Bob Benson, center, was presented a lifetime pass by Indiana State Fair Board members Stan Poe and Lee Ann Eizinger. Lamb and retiring when Jim Lanford was Sheep Barn Director. Bob did a great job announcing as he would let the audience know information about the breeds showing, characteristics of the breed, etc. This made the shows very interesting will all of his knowledge about sheep and his care about the exhibitors. Bob serves as a National Director for the American Sheep Industry and has served on the Executive Board, the Legislative Council and was a member of the Predatory Management, By-laws and Nominating Committees. He has participated in more spring legislative trips than any other sheep producer. Bob and his guidance in lobbying and working on Capitol Hill has really helped the Sheep Industry and it’s organization. He is a stickler for procedure, so he is the logical person to be the parliamentarian for ASI—a role he still fills at each and every ASI annual convention. Just this spring he was honored with the “McClure Silver Ram Award.” It is presented to a dedicated volunteer who has commitment and service as a sheep producer who has made a substantial contribution to the sheep industry and it’s organizations. Bob Benson has been a major asset to the Indiana State Fair Sheep show over the years with his announcing, and his commitment to the sheep industry. _______ Page 45

By Randy Rife Historian The following pages of photos are from several boxes of photos Bob Johnson saved from past ASRA secretary Dale Blackburn’s office after his passing. Bob shared them with me to see if I could use some for these history articles. This month kids and their Shrops are being spotlighted. How many of these kids do you recognize?
