From president Jim Percival Happy fall to everyone. Hopefulcourage us as Shropshire breeders to investigate new technologies ly everyone had a successful show season. I know that there were and see if there is something that will work for you. over 300 Shropshires entered here   Hopefully everyone’s breeding in Ohio. It was quite a show. season is going well. I look for Last week I was able to attend the sheep educational event ward to visiting with everyone at sponsored by the American Lamb the National Show in Louisville. Board and Premier. This event was Don’t forget to attend the Stars of Jim Percival held at Colorado State University. Louisville sale on Saturday. Please One of the focuses of this event was how remember to mentor a new breeder. That is technology can benefit us as producers. I en- the only way we will continue to grow.

From secretary becky peterson Welcome to the Voice, Shropshire members! This is where you will learn about the activities of the American Shropshire Registry Association, view the advertisements and flock successes of the breeders, see the hopes and dreams of the young members and, of course, learn about Shropshires. It is still published on paper three times a year and is trying hard to keep up with electronic sheep news. We encourage you to read it from cover to cover, paying attention to event announcements and the minutes of the board meetings where the policies of the association are made. If you skip over these items you may find you have missed a deadline or have forgotten to shear your show animals cleanly all the way to the hock joints! And for sure feel free to contribute items you believe will be interesting and useful to other members. We’ve had a busy year with lots of sheep being exhibited at several top quality shows around the country, and nearly 250 head sold through six online sales and three event sales and many more sold privately, with about one quarter going to owners new to Shropshires and a good half going to juniors. So far this year, there have been 2,036 registrations, 1,049 ownership transfers, 12 new memberships, 148 returning adult member__________________ October 2019

ships and 139 junior memberships. Strong numbers have been exhibited at the major shows and state fairs and we are seeing several individual sheep that are having multiple successes. The ASRA actively supports many junior activities such as a college scholarship, Starter Flock Award, Shropshire Royalty, Regional Support, the All-American Junior Show and of course the upcoming National Junior Show in November. We certainly appreciate the sponsorship by the members in all of these areas as the till would soon be empty without it. The Futurity is going along well though ewe lamb nominations are down slightly. Point forms are arriving daily and results are starting to look competitive. A word about registration and transfer turn-a-round time: All mail is opened and checked the day it arrives and any work clearly marked “Rush” and paid for is done at that time and mailed the next day. I make every effort to work in orders that are needed in a hurry but for the most part, orders other than paid rush work are processed in the order in which they are received.    Emailing or faxing applications does not make the process any quicker, it just saves the mail transit time to the office and prompt payment will shorten the wait time. emailed orders can be made through PayPal to the Shropshire email address and I can now take credit card payments over the phone. The small transaction fees through PayPal and phone processing are added to the invoiced amount. I appreciate your understanding on this. I am happy to email registrations if we are very tight on time but please realize that not every show will accept these copies. I am very reluctant to make duplicate papers to transfer as two certificates with different owners of the same sheep can cause a lot of confusion and can be quite controversial. The best way to order ownership transfers is to mail them to the office. I try to get these in and out quickly ahead of show times. There has been talk of increasing fees for the registration of older sheep or transfers older than 60 days. The ASRA is one of the few breed associations that has not staggered fees but it may be time to consider it. For sure, if it is enacted, breeders will be given plenty of notice to try to catch up on such work before such a fee increase. Over the summer, the directors started a

new service for ASRA members. For a fee of $100, individually approved Shropshire-related announcements with some text and/or a link to a website can be sent one time as an “email blast” to all of the member addresses on file. This generally would include Online Sales or other advertising of dispersal, or other Shropshire opportunity. Also offered would be a mailing done from the Voice office for $100 plus any printing and mailing cost. This is a paid advertising service available to members. Please note that each instance is to be approved by the directors and that the ASRA does not automatically endorse such content. It was also determined during previous board meetings that the email address list and the mailing list are not available to share. Meanwhile, we hope to see lots of Shropshires and their families at the big show in Louisville in November. There you can take in the showmanship competition, wether shows, Stars of Louisville Sale, National Shropshire Junior Show and Open Show and lots of Shrop talk. See you then!

Entries will be evaluated by a judge for a sale order at 8:30 a.m. The entries will be available for buyers’ inspection. The order of sale will be posted and the sale will follow as soon as possible after 10 a.m. in order to maintain the schedule of the remaining breed sales of the day. Terms of sale are cash or good check paid on sale day. Credit cards also accepted with a small transaction fee. If you are unable to attend the sale, any member of the sale committee can handle a bid for you but requests mail bids should be directed to Sale Manager, Becky Peterson. As in any other sale, ownership transfers will be made in the ASRA office after the sale and will be sent to the buyer as soon as possible. Nancy Miniter, a Massachusetts’ sheep breeder, vet tech and ultrasound technician, will scan bred ewes for pregnancy status and results will be announced at the sale block. Also, sale management has been able to allow con_______ Page 8

signors to retain rights to show their entries in the open show on Wednesday, Nov. 20.This encourages the breeder to consign a sheep that he considers worthy of showing in the National Show in Louisville and making that quality available to buyers. We will assist purchasers who are not exhibitors in obtaining an early release for purchased animals only after the junior or open show if the animal is entered. Also, with exhibitors attending from across the country, consignors and the sale committee will work with buyers needing transportation of sheep purchased at the sale. A sale catalog may be obtained by contacting ASRA secretary and sale manager Becky Peterson at (413) 624-9652 or shropsec@ hotmail.com. The catalog is also available on the Shropshire website www.shropshires.org and will be emailed to the Shropshire email list and mailed to all past buyers. Minutes of Board Meeting

May 10, 2019, Eaton Ohio The meeting was called to order by President Jim Percival at 9:12 a.m. Also present were Re Call, Darrell Dockter, RJ Creamer, Rick Adams, Mandy Curtis, Danny Rogers, Mary Anne Keck, Jim Gruenhagen, Paul Young, Caleb Fritz, Tom Slutz, Adam Moore, Junior Coordinator Rylie Miller and Secretary Becky Peterson. Emily Petzel and Mike Elsbury were not present. Secretary’s report - Becky had previously distributed the minutes of the Teleconference of Feb. 17, 2019.There was no discussion. Rick Adams moved to accept the report as sent, Danny Rogers seconded. The report was accepted. Treasurer’s Report – Becky had also sent ahead the financial reports. She noted a change to the End of 2018 due to an error of $4.95 in the Interest Income and Insurance Expense and also the omittance of $24.22 from the December 2018 CD interest income. The corrected Net Income for the End 2018 was $971.38.The

Balance Sheet for the first four months of 2019 shows Total Assets of $53,478.65. The Profit & Loss showed a net loss of $2872.74 as of April 30.The major difference from the previous year was that the May Voice expense and income had not been recorded at that time. Becky noted regions that were still due for youth support for this year. Ohio, Indiana and Southwest districts had already received $300 each. NE/NY, PA & South, Illinois, West and MI/ WI still need to request funds for 2019. Revolving Funds showed a net income of $484.21 for the Junior Association, Stars of Louisville Sale and the Starter Flock program. The Revolving Funds show a total available for those activities of $4314.74.There was no further discussion of the finances. Motion made to accept the report by RJ Creamer and seconded by Tom Slutz. Report accepted. Committee reports Voice & Promotion – Darrell & Rinda reported that Voice was going well and advertising is always needed. Total income over two issues was $9135.25, expense was $9254.51. Discussion followed on printing schedule. It was felt

We want to express our sincere thanks and appreciation to

Dennis & Nancy Avery and John Mrozinski for their guidance, mentorship, and friendship and for helping make our first year of returning to the Shropshire breed such a successful one!

We also want to thank those who purchased lambs from us this spring, especially Mark Fiegl of New York, and Lane Falch of Missouri. We wish you the best of luck with your purchases and in your breeding programs!

that February and May issues were too close together but no way to change that schedule. Stars of Louisville Sale – There was discussion about allowing two-year-old bred ewes to sell as a way to get more entries. Buyers seem to be looking for ewes to lamb out, not lambs to grow out. There was discussion about the timing of the Voice before the sale. Rick Adams moved to allow bred 2 to 4-year-old ewes and have the Voice ready by October 1st and advertise the sale in it. Mary Anne Keck seconded. Note: Sale will be on Saturday at NAILE, Open Sheep penned by Saturday noon, Open Show Wednesday. Motion passed. Discussion followed regarding getting photos of consignments posted on Facebook and website ahead of the sale. Becky noted that had been done in the past and it was hard to get consignors to send photos. Discussion followed and it was agreed this needed to be done somehow. Consignors will need to provide a timely photo. Becky suggested that a small ad be put in the Banner in the issue prior to the sale. Sale committee will discuss it. Production – Rick Adams encourages breeders to utilize the NSIP program. Becky noted that the sale program now allows an individual NSIP ID number to appear on a registration certificate with a link to the NSIP searchable database. Breeders who utilize NSIP are encouraged to submit ID numbers with registrations. Junior Committee – Rylie Miller reported that there is new Royalty to be introduced and there has been some fundraising for the Starter Flock. She inquired about having a prepaid debit card to simplify making purchases for the junior activities. Discussion followed. There is a budget of $1,500 for the Junior activities (AAJS lunch, NAILE meeting, Royalty sashes, first year senior member upgrade membership fee waiver, etc.). Danny Rogers moved to provide Rylie with a prepaid debit card for $500 for purchases that can be refilled until the budgeted $1500 is reached. Mandy Curtis seconded. Motion passed. Rylie is working on ideas for the AAJS in Kansas. Breed Character – Rick Adams described the event later in the day to evaluate the character of two classes of ewes. Board members will view them first to make an official placing.

There are funds for three $100 sale credits for the winning scores in junior age groups. Photos will be taken and Rick will write an article for the October Voice. Starter Flock – only two applications were received. Apparently there are two others that were submitted but not received. Should add to the form “application is not considered received until a confirmation is received.” $890 has been pledged, $610 is needed to complete the fund for this year. The fund is $446 short from 2018. Discussion followed regarding adjusting the award amount if funds are short. Futurity – Information from the Spring Online Sales is nearly complete and came in much better with the new reporting forms. 19 yearlings and 50 ewe lambs have been nominated prior to the Ohio Sale. Becky noted that the online sale photos are heavily scrutinized for scrapie tags. Budget – the 2019 Budget had been discussed at the February teleconference and an error had been found. Finance Committee reviewed and made some recommendations. It was also agreed to purchase a D&O insurance policy (quoted amount is $1801). Mandy Curtis moved to purchase the D&O policy, seconded by Adam Moore. Jim Gruenhagen moved to amend the budgeted insurance amount to $2058, seconded by Darrell Dockter. Motion passed. Budgeted Net Loss projected to be $1049. RJ Creamer moved to approve and seconded by Adam Moore. Motion passed. Rick noted that the negative budget is a reminder that expenses have to be watched and more income should be generated. Becky said she is reluctant to nitpick on the members but thought it possible to increase the fees slightly for registering sheep over one year of age or transferring sheep purchased over 60 days ago as many other breeds do. Jim asked Becky to bring a recommendation to the November Board meeting. Office registration stats as of April 30 showed 697 registrations (601 in 2018), 206 transfers (148 in 2018) including three flocks that have consolidated family ownerships with half price transfers. 2019 National Show & Sale The Classic Show and Sale took place as part of the Big Ohio Sale in Eaton May 9-11. There was a barn full with 15 other breeds participating. The entire sale event was managed by Banner Sale Management with the input of breed representatives. Friday’s show was the last of the day and was judged by Adam Heffelfinger who evaluated 110 Shropshire ewes and 45 rams. With the late day on Friday, there was no Ohio Shropshire dinner but the long morning wait on sale day made time for the always popular Ewe Preview allowing for the buyers to inspect the entries of each class up close. It draws a big crowd in a small area and happens fast but is a great opportunity to see the sheep. Shrops were the last breed to sell on Saturday. The Grand Champion Ram was the Senior Champion Fall Ram from VIP Shropshires. The

Junior Shrop Association News The juniors had a great time in Hutchinson, Kansas! We were so excited to see everyone over the summer and how hard all the juniors had been working with their animals. The Shropshire breed was represented well with 58 juniors and 151 head of sheep. The juniors participated in many great activities like showmanship, team showmanship, the 3-on-3 basketball tournament, virtual shearing and much more! However, we cannot forget about the annual cookout and meeting. Everyone got together to enjoy walking tacos and the juniors and their families were given the opportunity to get to know one another. I would like to take a minute to con-

gratulate all the junior members on their county and state fairs this summer. It is always exciting to see the Shropshire breed represented well throughout the nation. Also, I would like to wish all members of the association luck as they prepare for the upcoming lambing season. We hope to see everyone in Louisville, Ky. for NAILE this upcoming November. Junior members, please remember that we will have a pizza party and short meeting the day before the junior show. This is a great time to get to know the other kids in the breed and the opportunity to pick the members that will represent your interests on the National Junior Shropshire Board. We also hope to see you all at the Stars of Louisville Sale. This is always a great opportunity to expand your flock! I am looking forward to seeing everyone there and wishing you all safe travels! Rylie Miller – (765) 421-8466 Junior Coordinator

Thank You New Shrop Flocks & New Genetics from New Zealand Thank you to all the buyers of ewes and rams over the last few years that have trusted in our programs. To the four Christmas Tree Farms that now have Shrop flocks, to the half-dozen production-oriented breeders, and to the repeat commercial ram buyers… Thank you for your support. Straws from three Highley Station studs landed at LAX in August. These three studs will be used to develop new genetic lines within our flocks. These rams will be AI’d to approximately 30 ewes each, 10 per flock.

Second trip back to Kansas bigger, better than before for All-American Junior Show By Deb Hopkins, Show Chairman The 26TH Annual All-American Junior Show just recently completed its second trip back at the Kansas State Fairgrounds in Hutchinson from July 4-7 and it was bigger and better than the first visit. The 2019 show in Kansas had 474 exhibitors exhibiting 1897 head of sheep. There were 25 states represented with 24 breeds of sheep participating in the show which also featured the 2019 National Junior Southdown Show, National Tunis Junior Show and the National Suffolk Junior show, which was new this year, as part of the All-American Show. The show went to a new show schedule that started activities earlier on Thursday, and it seemed to have worked really well for our show families and staff. It will be definitely something we will continue in the future. The total numbers shown by breed are as follows: Southdown 351; Hampshire 315; Suffolk 184; Shropshire 151; Polled Dorset 128; Dorper 98; White Dorper 89; Natural Colored 78; Oxford 67; Dorset Advantage 59; Montadale 53; Romney 47; Tunis 42; Lincoln 29; Horned Dorset 28; Merino 27; Columbia 25; Border Leicester 24; Cheviot 24; Corriedale 21; Katahdin 20; Rambouillet 13; Targhee 11 and Shetland 10. The last visit to Kansas had 1150 sheep from 272 exhibitors so we grew the number of sheep exhibited by almost 750 head by just over 200 more junior exhibitors. The All-American Show is a sheep show where the major focus is on the exhibitors and their families with many awards given out over the course of the weekend the show is designed for our junior exhibitors and their families. The exhibitors participated in many events besides the breeding sheep and market lambs shows including the 3-on-3 basketball tournament, pizza party, skill-a-thon, judging contest, pie social, lamb camp, wool _______ Page 34

show, family BBQ night, promotional contests, virtual shearing contest, free breakfasts, individual and team showmanship competitions and scholarship programs. New this year a leadline competition and Dress-A-Sheep contest were added to the show with great participation. The show had a new expanded show schedule that helped out tremendously in the flow of the show and activities, folks never had too late of a night. This show would not have been possible without the many volunteers that helped us out during and prior to the show. It basically takes a village to successfully put this show on. I don’t have a complete list of all of the different breed reps at the show that helped check in entries and run their shows, but thank you all for your help! THANK YOU also goes out to all the following people: Show Volunteers: Sheep Judges: Tim Hall, Matt Scramlin, Ryan Hendricks Ring Stewards: Jo Bernard, Jake Herrig, Jared Gilmore, Dennis Beckmier, Judy Moore, Becky Peterson, Melanie & Lee Ann Hall, Jansyn & Ted Van Horn, Emily Overs, John & Taylor Peck, Richard Schambow Judging Contest: Ben Williams, Brad Angus, Craig Beckmier Skill-A-Thon: Pat & Sam Wiford, Karen Vozarik and the many station attenders Basketball Tournament & Pizza Party: Lee Ann Hall and the volunteer refs Show Office Staff: Carrie Kelly, Donna Woolam, Kasey Gordon, Jess Miniter, Holiday Thomas, Gail Donkers, Judy Moore, Judy Schambow, Janet Hukowicz,Vanessa Herrig Photographers: Kendra Fleck, Facebook: Nancy Miniter Promotional Contest: Nancy Miniter, Emily Overs, Pam Van Horn Lamb Camp: Kym Leib & her assistants Welcome Bags & Table: Gillmore Family and __________________ Shropshire Voice

They were always there assisting us with all of our needs and were a great team to work with! Of course there were many others who helped out as needed during the show and thank you also for everything! The All-American Committee would once again like to thank all of the National Breed Associations for their financial support. Many individual donors and sheep breeders across the country supported the show in one way or another by sponsoring classes, selling ewe lambs, buying raffle tickets, donating items to be auctioned off, donating raffle items, or donating gift baskets. Your support is truly greatly appreciated! We have many special corporate/business supporters that either donated financially or through supplying us with products and services for our show. They are: Honor Show Chows, Weaver Leather, Novel Designs, American Lamb Board, Sydell Equipment, Tractor Supply Co., Profiles Show Supply, Ketcham Sheep Equipment, The Banner Sheep Magazine, Reproductive Specialty

Since being in Kansas this year many local companies and organizations came forward and supported the show. Thank you to: Hutchinson Convention & Visitors Bureau, Kansas Dairy Commission, Kauffman Seeds, Tom & Sandy Clayman and Ebert Sheep Farm. As you can see it was truly an organized cooperative effort and THANKYOU to you all! Plans are under way for next year’s show, which will be taking place at the Michigan State Livestock Pavilion, East Lansing, MI from July 2-5, 2020. If anyone is interested in helping out with the show in any way or has any ideas please feel free to contact Deb Hopkins (401)647-4676, email: cdcdorset@cox.net . As you can see it takes a lot of willing people to assist and we welcome all. Look forward to seeing everyone next year in Michigan!

Shropshire Scholarship winners

Each year the ASRA offers two $400 college scholarships to students directly involved with Shropshires and enrolled in an undergraduate program. Students must submit an application, two letters of recommendation and complete transcript by June 1.This year seven applications were received and they were all very impressive, requiring a little extra study by the evaluators. The winners were Ethan Elsbury of Greenfield, Ind. and Wyatt Graves of El Dorado Springs, Mo. Look for Wyatt’s introduction in the February issue. The first award will be made to Ethan Elsbury of Greenfield, Ind. Ethan is the son of Molly and Gary Elsbury and graduated this past June from the Greenfield-Central High School and will attend Purdue University to study Agricultural Systems Management and Agricultural Economics. He was well recognized through each of his past four years as Outstanding Student in Agriscience and was a United States President’s Youth Community Award Finalist in 2018. He won the Principal’s Leadership Award in 2017 among others. He was a member of the National Honor Society for three years and maintained a high school GPA of 4.109. As an FFA member in the Greenfield Central FFA Chapter, he has distinguished himself by participating in various FFA Activities and community service projects. He has served as the chapter treasurer, reporter and president. Moreover, he has also been elected to serve the eight-county, 20-chapter

_______ Page 36

Ethan Elsbury

District FFA as their vice-president for the 2018-2019 school year. One of his community service projects was establishing an 80x90 foot community garden at the high school. He solicited financial and in-kind donations of services and materials and spent untold hours managing the plot whose products went to the summer lunch program at the school. Ethan was also very active in 4-H with Shorthorn cattle and of course Shropshires and exhibiting at the Indiana State Fair multiple times. He describes his Shropshire involvement over the years below: I have shown Shropshires for all 10 years of my 4-H eligibility. I got my start working with and showing Shropshires for my aunt and uncle. After my first year of showing, I was hooked. I have attended over 25 shows, ranging from the Wisconsin State Fair to the Indiana State Fair and to the Wisconsin Sheep & Wool Festival. I am very fortunate to be able to represent my breed at shows all over the country. My own flock started four years ago with one yearling I bought at a sale. I showed that yearling all summer and then exposed her to a ram owned by my uncle. In the late winter, she birthed two ram lambs that my sister and I went on to show at many local shows. I have slowly increased the number of my flock by buying a second yearling at a sale, and saving all female offspring from my two ewes. I am now up to three active breeding ewes, three yearlings and six lambs (four ewes and two wethers). My parents don’t currently have a sheep flock. All aspects and responsibilities of my flock fall on my shoulders. From administering dewormer to show prep, I am in charge of the success of my flock. From 2015-2017, I was fortunate enough to be able to represent the Shropshire breed as the Indiana Shropshire Ambassador. This position allowed me to be in contact with other Shropshire breeders, both junior and adult, and to help increase the impact and reach of the Shropshire breed. I look forward to continuing the growth of my flock in the coming years with the help and support of my family. Congratulations to Ethan on all of his hard work and best of luck to him in the future. __________________ Shropshire Voice

Royal Shropshire Kids selected

The National Shropshire Royalty Program is in its third year in 2019. The opportunity is open to both boys and girls and this year we had applications from each. Information was made available during the winter and we were delighted to receive a total of six applications for all three divisions. A selection committee of Robin Pardus, Re Call, Danny Rogers, Emily Petzel and Becky Peterson was assembled and each member enjoyed learning about these youngsters and their interest in Shropshires. Presentations were made at the National Shropshire Sale in Eaton, Ohio last May. The youngest division had two applicants and the committee opted to award the title of Shropshire Bo Peep to Faith Calvin of Missouri. Faith is nine years old and is the daughter of Kenlee and Sarah Calvin and loves to show sheep and make friends with other exhibitors. She said Shropshires are her favorite breed and she wants to travel and meet more of the people. Dash Heeg hails from Montana and is the 10-year-old son of Jason Heeg and Denise Linford and is the first young man to be chosen as Shropshire Royalty and therefore has been awarded the title of Boy Blue. Dash travels with his family to the shows and works hard with his family to make good Shropshire sheep. Both Faith and Dash were on hand at the All-American to help with the Shrop awards and photos. The middle division of the Royalty program had four applicants ranging from 11-13 years of age. This year Addisen Nicholson of Connecticut was chosen as the Shropshire princess. Addisen is 11 years old and is doing a bang-up job with her Shrops. She also is active in sports, playing soccer, basketball and lacrosse. She is eager to get more kids to learn how to raise this breed. Addisen was unable to attend the Ohio Sale in May as she was completing a school choral project. We congratulate these young Shropshire __________________ October 2019

fans and know they will continue to help promote this breed and their projects! Applications for the 2020 Royalty will be available from the Shropshire office or on the website early next year.

LeeAnn Martin winner of 10th Shropshire Starter flock The 2019 Starter Flock winner is 10th grader LeeAnn Martin from Corryton, Tenn. She and her parents, Marty and Cathy Martin, live on a working cattle farm and have had Katahdins for a few years. LeeAnn was seeking experience with other breeds and was drawn to the muscling of the Shropshires. She knows she has a challenge of learning to shear sheep and having to manage two different breeds. LeeAnn is active in livestock judging in the Knox County 4-H and also Wildlife and Forestry. She provided the evaluation committee with a well thought out budget for her project. LeeAnn received a $1500 stipend which she used at the Ohio Classic Sale last May. She purchased a yearling ewe from Chloe Stonesifer, a January lamb from Rockin K Livestock and a February Ewe

LeeAnn Martin

Lamb from Caleb Fritz. She recently sent us an update about her project. She has exhibited her Shropshires at the Knox County Fair, the State 4-H Fair, a Regional 4-H Show and was getting ready for the Tennessee Valley Fair. Her yearling was Grand Champion Breeding Ewe at the county fair, first at the regional and third on the state level. The Fritz ewe has placed first twice and second once. The Rockin K ewe has been first, third and fourth. “The Shropshires are a bit less temperamental than the Katahdins and are pretty calm most of the time,” LeeAnn said. “They are better at bracing, as well. I am excited to learn more about the Shropshire as I progress with lambs. Thank you to all who made my project possible!” The Starter Flock project was begun in 2014 by the National Junior Shropshire Association and is funded by donations by Shropshire breeders. Sponsors this year include Chip Hallet, Rick Adams, Avery Shropshires, Knepp & LaFollette Shrops, Slutz Family/City Limits, Dennis & Carol Lingley, Orchard Valley Farm, Sugar Ridge Ranch, Tim Elsbury, Sand Meadow Farm Nicholson Family, Rife Shropshires, Creamer Shrops, Jim & Donna Gruenhagen, Tim & Debbie Barnes, Bill Bryant Jr, BWB Farms, Wolford Shrops, Mark & Marilyn McCabe, Dave Evans, Jim Isler, John Melvin and Schoolhouse Shropshires. As usual, with a lot of junior programs, sponsorship is continually needed to make it successful. Contact Junior Coordinator Rylie Miller or the Shropshire office to find out how you can help. To be considered for the award youngsters must submit an application, an essay, one or more letters of recommendation and a budget outlining the management of three or more ewes for a year. Applications should be available early in 2020 from the Shropshire office or on the registry website. __________________ Shropshire Voice

Shropshire Breed Type has eroded over the last three to four decades due to crossbreeding and lack of breeder integrity. We still select based on breed standards.

Here are snippets of the Shropshire Breed Standards: Head …Nose straight, masculine on rams, feminine on ewes. Straight or slightly dished face. Eyes bright and alert. Ears Alert and well set, thin to moderate thickness, medium length… DISCRIMINATIONS …Ears thick-skinned, coarse or excessively long or drooping. Coarse or Roman nose…

Stop using rams that don’t meet Shropshire standards. Stop using sheep from other breeds to win a ribbon. People and Pedigrees You Can Trust. Traditional Genetics with a Modern Purpose. Contact us early with interest in ewes, rams, and/or semen. Mapleton Mynd Shropshires Cody Hiemke Stoughton, WI _______ 415-302-8035 Page 2 cjhiemke@gmail.com
