Annual Report of Giving 2014-2015

When you support Sacred Heart, you make an impact. Your generosity is hard at work every day on the Sacred Heart School campus. The impact is evident everywhere you look. Sports teams are enjoying pristine fields and courts, we have a thriving music program, beautiful new science labs, and smiling engaged students in every classroom. The true and lasting impact of your support and the return on your investment is students of all ages who love learning, and who, with your help, have access to every advantage and resource we can offer them. And the impact doesn’t end when our students leave school. Your donations allow us to provide our students with an unrivaled level of preparation for college and life beyond. When you give to Sacred Heart School, whether it’s in volunteer hours, in-kind, or in dollars, our students become your legacy. You become an integral part of the lives of young people, who will have every opportunity to change the world thanks to the educational experience they receive here. In this annual report of giving for the last fiscal year, we recognize the dedication and sacrifice of the community of Sacred Heart School supporters. The impact of your support begins on this campus, and it travels. Our students carry it with them across the country, and even the globe, as they apply the wisdom and knowledge they gained here to positively impact the lives of others. We are grateful to be surrounded by a community who understands the importance of investing in these students and their education.

A Note from the President

Dear Friends, It is a humbling experience to reflect on the incredible support and generosity of the Sacred Heart School community over the course of a school year. So many different groups are represented in the pages of this Annual Report of Giving: parents, alumni, faculty and staff, grandparents, community partners, and many others. All of you are connected by a common understanding of the importance of investing in education, and especially a Catholic education. Your gifts provide the cornerstone to everything we do here on our beautiful campus. Please know that every student from preschool all the way through grade 12 benefits from the impact of your generosity! In many cases, the impact is tangible such as with the Science and Innovation Center, Observatory, elementary Spanish program, iPads, piano keyboards and broadcast media studio. All of these terrific resources are the result of your gifts and hard work. It’s the daily impact, though, that’s sometimes easy to overlook. Your support allows us to attract and retain the best faculty, coaches, and administrators; maintain and enhance our beautiful grounds and facilities; add hands-on learning experiences; integrate the most cuttingedge technology into the classroom experience; and help keep our mission alive and present in the lives of all students. There are many reasons people choose to support Sacred Heart School. Parents want to ensure their children have every advantage; alumni want to ensure that future generations of Sacred Heart students have the same wonderful experiences they did; and there are many members of our faculty and staff who believe so strongly in Sacred Heart and our students that they donate funds on top of everything else they already give to the school. Whether people are giving to improve the athletic programs, science labs, campus ministry, or the drama department, they are all focused on providing Sacred Heart students with the best possible educational experience. It’s a testament to the quality of our community that so many of you make supporting Sacred Heart a priority in your own lives. We admire you for it, and we thank you for all you do! I hope you will all continue to be active members of the Sacred Heart family. I look forward to continuing to advance the school stewarded by your generosity. Sincerely,

Pamela Desmarais President, Sacred Heart School

Leadership Donors The generosity of these donors has made a remarkable impact on our entire school community, allowing us to continue to enhance and ensure that Sacred Heart students are receiving the best possible educational experience.

Scott Hokanson `90 Pictured with his wife Ann Marie, and 5 children (Elizabeth ‘17, Scott Jr. `20, Andrew `21, Hailey `26, Jacoby `28) Sacred Heart has been the right home for all five of our very different children. As our children have relied on us to raise them well, both Ann Marie and I are glad we have the families, teachers and fellow students at Sacred Heart to support them as they grow each year.

Families, teachers, and students, Ann Marie and I know we all make sacrifices to send our children to Sacred Heart. We also know that my children share a classroom with classmates whose families have decided to make the same sacrifice. We feel good knowing that every day our children are surrounded by other students whose families care about their growth. The teachers our children have enjoyed have also contributed to the wonderful people they are growing to be today. We appreciate their availability and their gratitude when we volunteer, which is as often as we can. We love that our involvement has led to us having special relationships with teachers as well as Dr. Gill, Dr. Stoloski, and Sr. Ann Therese prior. Most of the teachers know the Hokansons, and that helps. As we deal with teenage issues, including a deserved suspension last year, I am very confident the relationship we have with the school helped a difficult situation become a character building case in accountability. We absolutely adore my children’s friends. We are raising confident children who are amongst friends who value education, are respectful of the school, their teachers and their parents. Every day they are reinforced with Catholic values and it shows. The presence of the Sisters of Divine Providence is evident and my wife and I love the Catholic teachings they get at Sacred Heart. Last year, at the spring athletic awards ceremony, a theme resonated. Each coach, when discussing their teams’ accomplishments, which were many, also referenced those students who may have missed a few practices due to extra help in certain subjects. The coaches, teachers, teammates, and award recipients were all proud of the fact that education was valued first. The support those students who needed extra help got from their peers who may not have needed it, showed us that our children are surrounded by great families, teachers and friends. We encourage you to consider supporting the Sacred Heart Fund. This treasure we share on the South Shore needs to continue producing intelligent, caring, confident and supportive citizens. Sincerely, Scott (’90) and Ann Marie Hokanson

Sophia Pizzi `13 Heads to Rome to Intern at the Vatican Radio Station

Sophia Pizzi `13, pictured in the center along with her sisters Olivia Pizzi `12 (left), and Nadine Ebersole `07

Sophia wrote to us this fall to tell us about the amazing opportunity she’s been chosen to take part in. Next semester Sophia will travel to the Vatican for an internship at the Vatican’s official broadcasting service. Currently Sophia is majoring in Communication and English at Villanova University. Each semester the university’s communication department has sent a select few students to intern at the Vatican. After applying this semester, Sophia was accepted to intern at Vatican Radio, which is the official broadcasting service for the Vatican. Interns with Vatican Radio’s English Section are exposed to every aspect of broadcasting, from planning through production to promotion. Sophia will participate in editorial meetings and attend press conferences at the Vatican Press Office where she’ll gain valuable insight into the Holy See’s decision-making process. She’ll also learn how to use digital recording equipment and editing programs, conduct interviews, record voice-overs, post articles on the website - and provide much-needed input for social networking efforts that include everything from the FaceBook page, to the Twitter account, webcasts and Youtube channel. Here’s a direct excerpt from Sophia’s letter: This role is important to me for many reasons, but it is especially meaningful because it is directly related to my faith—something I fostered during my 13 years at Sacred Heart and still carry with me today. Outside of my faith, other aspects of my SH career contributed immensely in driving me. My experience there prepared me as a student and allowed me to find something I am passionate about that I could grow in as I navigated my way through my first college courses and activities. I specifically owe so much to our publication, the Heart Beat. I learned some of the foundations of journalism by writing stories, attending the Columbia Scholastic Press Association conferences, getting hands on experience with Adobe software, and working with a staff of unique personalities. All of this enabled me to skillfully pursue writing for my college newspaper (which I am now an editor for too!) and pursue a summer internship as a digital marketing intern for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Massachusetts Bay. These more recent experiences may seem to have brought me to the place I am today, but I absolutely will never forget where it all started. SH faculty pushed me to excel, encouraged me to grow, and truly cared when it mattered the most. I cannot wait to see all that Rome holds for me, and more importantly I cannot wait to share my once in a life time experience with the Sacred Heart community. At the end of the day, I hope that my experiences inspire others to follow the things they love. When you love what you’re doing, everything will fall into place. The ‘Nova Nation would be lucky to have more SH students. I could not be having a more incredible college experience. I consider myself beyond lucky to be at such a wonderful university with limitless opportunities! Plus it’s near Philadelphia, a city I’ve grown to love (and also just got to see the Pope in!). Tell everyone that I send a big hello. All the best, Sophia Pizzi

Impact you can see...

Cardinal Sean O’Malley visited Sacred Heart School this fall, celebrating Mass with our Elementary and High School students and making a special visit to the Early Childhood Center to bless the youngest members of our community!

Elementary School students enjoyed amazing opportunities like our band program, Nature’s Classroom and even a visit from Channel 5 meteorologist Danielle Vollmar to close out their FOSS Science unit on weather!

We continued to broaden the experience at Sacred Heart High School with new science labs, our first varsity football team, and expanded offerings in the arts like a workshop in Shakespearian performance led by members of an actual Shakespeare company!

Return on Your Investment... Kory Turner `17 With your support Sacred Heart students are able to develop their natural talents, cultivate new ones, and graduate with character, integrity, and a drive to make the world a better place. One great example of this is junior, Kory Turner. Kory came to Sacred Heart in third grade and has been doing big things ever since! • He’s an active member of Sacred Heart’s drama scene performing in shows like “The Wizard of Oz”, “Moby Tick”, and last year as Donkey in “Shrek”, and most recently Beast in “Beauty and the Beast! • He was the 2015 Massachusetts State Champion for Prose Reading, quite an accomplishment in only his sophomore year! He remains a strong contributor on the Sacred Heart Speech and Debate team, regularly finishing in top spots in multiple categories. • He was also awarded citations from both the Senate and the House of Representatives last year, for his accomplishments in the Speech and Debate sphere. • Kory is the current President Elect for the Southeastern Massachusetts Association of Student Councils. He’ll take office in Fall 2016! The Association is comprised of 39 schools from all over Southeastern Massachusetts; its expressed mission is to help students become leaders in their schools, communities and within their region. Kory’s ability to balance his success in extra-curricular activities and commitment to serving his peers through student council, all while achieving at the highest level in the classroom, is a hallmark of the Sacred Heart School experience. Your support is integral in our committment to whole-student education. And the results are tangible, year after year talented and inspiring young men and women like Kory graduate from Sacred Heart, and start journeys into college and careers where we know they’ll change the world for the better.

The Sacred Heart Class of 2015

Sacred Heart School is a private, Catholic, co-educational learning community for students in preschool through grade 12. As a sponsored ministry of the Sisters of Divine Providence, we strive to inspire minds, define character and encourage responsible leadership through a curriculum that prepares students to pursue knowledge now and throughout their lives. In the tradition of the Sisters of Divine Providence, we seek to develop a community of faith that encourages students to act with compassion, to work for a just society, and to pursue opportunities to develop and share their God-given talents in service to society.
