The SHIELD (Sacred Heart Interdisciplinary Education Leadership Development) Program at Sacred Heart is entering its second season in 2016! These exciting programs will benefit students in grades 3 to 12 interested in exploring their passions and future fields of study. Students will gain a sense of curiosity and love of learning. They will take away a greater sense of direction, self-confidence, and leadership in their desired area of focus. Course offerings include S.T.E.A.M. programs (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math), theater, finance, and entrepreneurship. SHIELD offerings stand out for their wide variety of unique offerings. We are committed to becoming the South Shore’s first choice for Enrichment Programs. Week 1 June 27 to July 1 Creative Writing with Cape Cod Writers Group Grades: 7 to12, 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Price: $299 Do you like to write? Would you like help from professional authors for your fiction or nonfiction? If so, you will love Tomorrow’s Writers Today at the Sacred Heart School, a program presented by the Cape Cod Writers Center. This is an inspiring fun-filled, week long program, where you can study with a literary expert. During this class you will learn how to improve your skills writing prose and prepare your work for a contest. Students should bring a flash drive to save their work. SAT Prep Grades: 9 to 12, 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. (Tuesdays only from June 28 to August 16) Price: $399 Have you heard? A redesigned SAT format was recently launched! We will make sure students know what to expect. Teachers will provide instruction in critical reading, math and test taking strategies. Students will use prep materials generated from the College Board, the makers of the new SAT. There will be limited space in this 7 week prep course, so make sure to sign up now! AAA Drivers Education 9:00-3:30 must be 15 years 9 months old Price: $849 for AAA Members, $799 Member Sacred Heart School will be hosting the AAA Drivers Training School this summer. This five day course will satisfy all classroom needs for students to obtain their driver’s license. There is a discount of $50 for AAA members. Students receive a one-year Associate membership and may be eligible for an insurance discount from their auto insurer Heart of Gold Adventure Program Grades: 5 to 8, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. *times may vary depending on trips Price: $399 The Heart of Gold Adventure Program will depart Sacred Heart High School each morning for a daily adventure. Program will focus on exploring the natural world by leading adventurers on guided local excursions from Boston to Cape Cod and beyond. Some examples of activities are: Hiking on the local trails and beaches, exploring the region’s historical sights, amusement parks, swimming, fishing, kayaking, biking, and much more!

S.T.E.M. Week Grades 5 to 8, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Price: $299 A fantastic chance to sample what SHIELD has to offer and get involved with Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. In this four day, hands-on, workshop, students will tackle a variety of challenging projects. Guided by multiple SHIELD Instructors and guest speakers, students will experience different areas of interest like archaeology, marine biology, Robotics and Engineering to Forensic Science and more! Tennis with Professional Katherine Davidson Grades 5 to 12, 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Price: $199 Experienced USPTR certified professional with a unique approach to coaching tennis. Course will incorporate the physical, tactical and technical components of the game in a fun and positive learning environment. Four days of instruction will conclude with a mini tournament. All levels welcome!

Behn Basketball Camp Grades 3 to 12, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Price: $295 full day and $196 half day The largest and most successful basketball camp in New England, Behn Basketball has grown throughout Eastern Massachusetts for the past 22 years with a reputation of excellent teaching focused on fundamentals. Our experienced coaches create an intense yet comfortable atmosphere that encourages learning and development. The goal is for each player to leave camp with improved skills, increased confidence, and acquired knowledge on how to practice and succeed. And of course we have fun too! Intro. to Robotics: Workshop Grades 5 to 8, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Price: $299 Ever build your own working robot! Campers use creative problem solving skills as they learn how to program robots to respond to their environment and solve tasks using the NXT-G programming language and the LEGO Mindstorms TM NXT platform. In this one week program, campers will create a robot and program it to drive through a variety of exciting obstacle courses. No prior experience is required. C.S.I. Forensic Science Grades 9 to 12, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Price: $399 In this week-long course, we’ll learn how forensic science is really used to solve crimes! We’ll take a hands-on look at several of the basic techniques in forensic science. We’ll also learn along the way about the cutting-edge science behind forensic investigation and some of the ways that forensic investigations are done that most of us don’t already know about from primetime TV. At the end of the week, we’ll put together all of the techniques and knowledge we’ve gained to find the right suspect in a crime story of our own! At the end of camp, kids will walk away with a unique Minecraft mod that they can download and share with friends! During camp, kids will master introductory computer programming concepts including object-oriented programming, methods and parameters, instantiation of new objects, and more. Speech and Theater Grades 5 to 9, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Price: $299 Looking to get a jump start with Speech and Theatre for the upcoming year? A one week course, which introduces students to problem solving, evaluating alternative designs, and the Engineering Design Process. This project based course will help students on their way to future studies and careers in this field. Product Development: From Engineer to Entrepreneur Grades 8 to 12, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Price: $399 Taught by Northeastern University professors this course introduces students to product planning and analysis; this course is a lead-in to an Entrepreneur course. Using tools and techniques for specification development, students learn to critically analyze designs for performance, efficiency, aesthetics, functional, and marketability.
Principals of Aviation Grades 7 to 12, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Price: $399 or $425 with flight In this week-long course, students will come to understand the basic principles of flight and the various purposes we use aircraft for in modern society. Once we have some basic ideas, we’ll use the principles of aerospace engineering to modify gliders to improve their capability for a set task (such as performance of aerial maneuvers or maximization of gliding distance). At the end of the week, we will visit Alpha One Flight School at the Plymouth Airport for classroom exercises, use of the flight simulator, and take an actual flight in one of their many airplanes (additional cost applies). Cartooning and Comic Illustration Grades 7 to 12, 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Price: $299 Comic books and superheroes have been the major sources of blockbuster movies for the past 15+ years and there’s no sign of slowing down. These stories we watch on the big screen originate in comic books and with this regained popularity, the number of comic titles and companies are growing. Students in this course will learn the essential techniques for successful visual storytelling. Subjects like composition, panel layout, timing, and reference will be covered. The positions of penciler, inker, and colorist will also be explored. Instructor Kent Archer will share his experience in web-comics and breaking into mainstream comics, and will prepare students to do the same. Assignments throughout the course will result in a number of sequential pages to use in a portfolio. This course is beneficial for any artist looking to work in mainstream comics, create their own self published comic, or create a web-comic. Advanced Robotics Grades 7 to 12, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Price: $399 Taught by Northeastern University professors and designed for those who have previously taken a robotics course. This one week course which begins with a review of typical Robotics systems. (Lego and/or VEX) and introduces students to more complex electro-mechanical systems. Performance oriented projects offer students opportunities for technical creativity and development of unique designs to meet the project requirements. A great course for students interested in pursuing Robotics or Programming in college.

Entrepreneur Leadership Academy with Babson College Professor Peter Bagley Grades 7 to 12, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Price: $399 This course is geared for High School students that wish to have a college class experience. Class size from 18 and up to 30 students will participate in 32 hours of hands-on experiential entrepreneurial education with a Babson faculty member, guest speakers and mentors. The course curriculum will focus on the Entrepreneur of all kinds (EoAKs) methodology, entrepreneurial leadership and new venture creation with social and economic value. Beginning individually and eventually forming into teams, students will develop new business ventures and build out a business plan. This program concludes with a student certification for their entrepreneurial leadership experience, an inter- school competition we term as the “Summer Scramble “. Lacrosse Academy by CroArt Sports and Boston Cannons Grades PreK-12, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Price: $325 This developmental lacrosse clinic for boys and girls will be coached by members of the CroART coaching staff along with members of the Boston Cannons Organization. The program provides one on one and group instruction. Our enthusiastic and experienced coaching staff brings cutting edge skills and techniques to all our participants. Players are broken up into age/skill level appropriate groups, and we maintain a 10-1 player-to-coach ratio for an optimal learning environment which emphasizes fun! Intro to Graphic Design Grades 7 to 12, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Price: $399 Taught by Northeastern University professors this course introduces students to Engineering design through sketching, drawing and specification development. Topics include orthographic, isometric, oblique, perspective, and section drawings as well as how to develop a complete Engineering specification. These techniques are used to produce Architectural, Mechanical, Civil, and Electronics/Electrical Engineering designs and this course provides the foundation for Computer Aided Design (CAD).

Week 6 Aug.1 to Aug.5 Duct Tape Art and Design Grades 5 to 9, 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Price: $199 Yes, you read this correct. It’s not only used to fix just about everything, it can be fun! In this zany course, students will set their imaginations free. With the help of their instructor, they will create safe, yet useful and artistic expressions all by using our beloved…duct tape! Drones and Control Systems Grades 7 to 12, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Price: $399 Taught by Northeastern University professors this one week course which compliments Advanced Robotics. This course offers students an introduction to open source programming through Arduino and other control systems. A great course for students interested in pursuing Robotics, Engineering, or Programming in college. Engineering Graphics & Design: Project Based Learning Grades 9 to 12, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Price: $399 This course taught by Northeastern Univeristy professors provides students with basic engineering drafting and introductory design skills needed to function in a Computer-aided Drafting (CAD) environment. It covers the history of engineering hand drafting and the difference/similarities with respect to CAD tools used today. The basic steps of the engineering design process are discussed and students learn to apply these steps in small design projects where pictorial sketching and descriptive geometry (isometric and oblique drawings and projections) are used to communicate graphical solutions to proposed problems. It covers basic understanding of mechanical, electrical, and architectural layouts, and introduces basic dimensioning and tolerancing terms. Through introductory lab sessions, students are acquainted with general features, capabilities, similarities and differences among widespread engineering CAD software such as: Sketchup, SolidWorks, Autodesk AutoCAD, etc.

Week 7 Aug.8 to Aug.12 Youth Digital: App Design Camp Grades 3 to 9, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Price: $425 In this camp from Youth Digital, kids learn basic mobile app development skills as they design and program their own mobile game. At the end of camp, kids will be able to download and play their app on Android or iOS! Kids will learn basic programming concepts, including if-then statements, variables, and complex logic as they create their mobile game from scratch. During camp, kids will complete the process of designing a mobile game from start to finish, including choosing characters, level design, and programming the app’s functionality. Hunt Leadership Program Grades 5 to 8, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. *times may vary depending on trips Price: $399 The Hunt Leadership program has been enjoyed by Sacred Heart students for many years and is now available to boys and girls from grades 5 through 8 as a summer offering. Bring out your personal leadership skills with a variety of activities designed to boost self-confidence and improve social skills. Students will discover their inner strengths while working together as part of a team. Activities will include ice breakers, teambuilding challenges, sports and field trips. All athletic events will be kept non-competitive with a focus on teamwork and sportsmanship. Industrial Design: Project Based Learning Grades 9 to 12, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Price: $399 In this course taught by Northeastern University professors students will explore how the form and function of an item impacts its manufacturing and use, how the esthetics of a design will impact the merchantability of the product, and how the Ergonomics of the design impact the continued use of the product. Students will explore and redesign a given product in order to produce a prototype of the new design and determine how it will be mass-produced, marketed, and distributed to potential consumers. Students will keep a design log to document how the Engineering Design Process is used in the design and revision of products. Students will utilize the computer lab to conduct research, draw three dimensional representations of their ideas, produce product brochures, and as a means to communicate their findings. Problem Solving 101: Engineering Grades 9 to 12, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Price: $399 Considering becoming an engineering major in college? Would you like to get a glimpse on what a freshman course may look like? Taught by Northeastern University professors this course introduces students to complex problem solving, evaluating alternative designs, and the Engineering Design Process. Project based course which allows students an opportunity to apply many other disciplines into workable solutions.
Week 8 Aug.15 to Aug.19 College Bound Grades 9-12, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. *times may vary depending on trips Price: $399 Join us as we tour a variety of different New England colleges. Each day we will journey to a new college campus to participate in student led tours and information sessions. See the dorms, libraries, and classrooms of your potential place of study. Hear from current college students on what to expect and get some ideas on selecting your field of study. Along the way, we will explore the communities in which these colleges are located visiting different cities and towns! Camp Invention Grades 1-6, 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Price: $270 Since 1990, Camp Invention has taken summer fun and transformed it from ordinary to extraordinary! Local educators lead a week of hands-on activities created especially for 1st- 6th graders. Boys and girls will spend their time constructing and personalizing a DIY solarpowered cricket with a unique habitat and taking apart electronics to assemble something new. Registration Info and Frequently Asked Questions How do I register? Online registration is easy and quick at www.sacredheartkingston.com/shield/reg. All necessary forms and payment options can be found here. Upon completing your registration through Regpack a confirmation email will be sent. F.A.Q. Who are the instructors? Our staff is made up of school teachers and professionals in their fields. Many of the instructors hold masters degrees and have college teaching experience. Who attends these programs? Our summer participants come from a variety of public, private, and charter schools. Last summer, 20 different schools were represented on our campus. Is lunch provided? Lunch is NOT provided and students are asked to bring a daily bagged lunch. Does my child need to bring money? Depending on the program your child signs up for, there could be field trips and opportunities to purchase snacks and souvenirs. The instructor will inform the class prior to these trips. What forms of payment are accepted? All forms of payment are accepted, however, we encourage everyone to use our online registration. What is the refund policy for canceling a program? Full refunds are issued to individual s cancelling at least two weeks prior to a course beginning. A 25% deposit will be charged to any individual cancelling within two weeks of the start of a course. What are the typical class sizes? Class sizes range from 5 to 25 students depending on the subject matter.
