Sacred Heart is A Community of Light Sister Myra Rodgers, CDP - School President

“But if we would write A tomorrow Which is wider than wounds We have worn, We might wield words Like benedictions And remember blessings Within brokenness, Beginnings Within endings, and beauty within all things.” From “I Want to Write of the Light” By Bernadette Miller When I read this poem, I immediately think of our Mission here at Sacred Heart School. We are more than a school – we are a Learning Community and we are working to “write a tomorrow” with each of our students. It is not just through the courses we offer, the normal school activities that make up our students’ days, but it is through the people who come to school every day, prepared to give their very best for the young people in 1 I Sacred Heart School I January 2018

their classes. It is our faculty and administration who strive day in and day out to reach our students through formal teaching, but most especially through the good people that they are. These women and men are the “Sacred” people at Sacred Heart School; the folks who have as their mission to be the face of God’s loving care for our students. We pride ourselves on being a community who cares about each other and reaches out beyond our school to care about others through our service to those in need and projects of special care. It is our hope that our students can be a “benediction” and help others to “remember blessings within brokenness.” It is encouraging to hear the students share about the time spent at Matthew’s Kitchen and their chats with the people who are there. We want our students to see “beginnings within endings,” and “beauty in all things” through theater, art, broadcast journalism, and our exceptionally strong speech and debate program. Through the many words that weave throughout our day, it is my hope that Sacred Heart students speak words that “illuminate … and return beings to beauty;” use words that “spin substance from sunshine and decay”, “cajole night-weary birds” to celebrate, and warm hearts weighed down by the stones of sorrow. Our faculty and staff are committed to leading our students into the light now and in the future.

Sacred Heart Middle-High School - A Great Place to Learn Dr. Michael Gill - Principal, Middle - High School Over the last 40 years as both a teacher and an administrator, I have been fortunate and thankful to have had the opportunity to work with thousands of wonderful students, families, teachers, staff, and administrators. Those years of experience have shaped my perspective on the essential elements of truly “great” schools. Over the last 6 years as the principal of Sacred Heart High School, it has been clear that our school is a “great” one and the evidence can be found in every facet of the Sacred Heart experience. One of the first things I like to point out at Sacred Heart is that our students are learning in one of the most caring and nurturing environments of all the schools I’ve attended or in which I’ve worked. This is accomplished, in part, through our small size but more importantly it is rooted in a community of students and staff who hold the same beliefs and are working toward the same goals. So much of any school’s culture is rooted in the faculty and at Sacred Heart the passion of our teachers is unrivaled. Our faculty is balanced with both veteran and young teachers who are all supremely qualified and dedicated to the subjects they teach. The strong relationships they build with our students and their families are a point of pride, both for them, and for me as an administrator. The bonds they create are so strong you can even find some Sacred Heart alumni in the classrooms where they have returned as teachers! Because of our terrific faculty, we’re able to offer a diverse and challenging curriculum that keeps our students engaged and enthusiastic about their studies. Currently, we’re very pleased to be able to offer eleven on-site Advanced-Placement (AP) courses in six different disciplines. Students can also take courses in four world languages which includes opportunities for international travel and missions work! I am also proud that our academic program offers courses that cultivate the diverse talents of our students like mock trial, performing arts, public speaking, and broadcast journalism. It doesn’t hurt that all of this is offered on a beautiful 125 acre campus that features a world class science and innovation center, on-campus observatory, a newly refurbished broadcast studio, and a speech and debate center that is second to none. This is just the tip of the iceberg. Sacred Heart offers an educational experience with a depth and breadth of academics, athletics, extra-curricular activities, and service opportunities that allows our students to thrive and build on their existing talents while simultaneously discovering ones they didn’t know they had. 3 I Sacred Heart School I January 2018

Sacred Heart Elementary A Special Place Shaun Morgan - Principal, Elementary School As a new Principal for the school system, there is a question I am asked a lot, by relatives, neighbors, and pretty much anybody I ever meet… “What makes your school a special place?” To be honest, there is not one single answer to this question. Sacred Heart is a welcoming environment, in which children come to school every day and feel safe, loved, and are challenged to learn. We create a culture and climate within our school that encourages our students to become academic risk takers, pushing boundaries and challenging themselves each and every day. Our teachers create learning centers that excite our students, and create an atmosphere of excitement to come into the building each and every day. How do we know this? Simple, by watching our kids come into the school every day, smiling, high fiving the faculty, giving hugs to teachers, and then at the end of a school day, watching those same smiling faces leave the building. The goal of the faculty of Sacred Heart is to ensure that all of our students receive an education that is suited to them, and that they are challenged at an appropriate level. By utilizing online tools, such as Khan Academy and Code Academy, we allow students to challenge themselves at home, and extend their learning beyond the classroom. Our aim is to stay current with educational trends, while recognizing that change for the sake of change is not always a good thing. The students at Sacred Heart Elementary are presented with a challenging curriculum, that is rooted in what has been tried and tested as effective, while also providing new and innovative learning opportunities. For example, we are currently making the addition of Sphero Robotics programs to the school, a Speech and Debate program for grades 5-6, the creation of an international “sister school” program with schools in Spain and the UK, and we are evaluating adding Latin to our 4-6 curriculum.

Mr. Morgan makes time each week to read with students. This type of personal interaction with the prinicipal is the kind of thing that makes Sacred Heart so unique.

Beyond the traditional curriculum, we aim to ensure that we educate the whole child, and expose them to as many educational mediums as possible. We have a dedicated, student run, service group known as “Sacred Service” that organizes service projects and charitable endeavors for our student body throughout the year. Our student body learns that we have a responsibility to Social Justice, and we should all take steps to make active, positive, change in our world. Sacred Heart has a vibrant and active Parent Association, that helps us organize many amazing events for our students throughout the year. These events range from afterschool clubs and activities, like “Mad Science” and flag-football, to family-oriented seasonal events like our Trunk or Treat and Breakfast with Santa. Our parents feel welcomed as members of our school community, and know that when their students attend Sacred Heart, they are a part of our school family. So, what makes Sacred Heart special? Take your pick… Sacred Heart offers a stellar education to our students, a sense of belonging and community to families, and an experience that families can look back on and say, my child was challenged, my child was prepared, and my child was loved! 4 I Sacred Heart School I January 2018

Sacred Heart Early Childhood Center The first steps on the journey Sr. Angela Provost, CDP - Principal, ECC Our amazing Early Childhood Center is the first step on an enriching Catholic educational journey. Dedicated in 2007, the ECC was designed specifically for the development and growth needs of children from 3 to 6 years of age. Envisioning a home, the preschool is the foundation, the pre-kindergarten its walls, and the kindergarten completes the concept by placing the roof on the home. Three formative years of learning carefully crafted in a nurturing setting to ensure that when our students move into the elementary school they are fully prepared to meet their next set of challenges. Our students learn and play within a classroom structure with specific goals in mind. The faculty are highly qualified experts in early childhood education. The classrooms are equipped with cutting-edge technology including Smartboards, iPads, computers, listening centers, and more. As a curriculum based school, the students’ experiences are tailored to ensure a safe and nurturing atmosphere where, even our youngest students begin to discover and develop their God-given talents. We’re proud to have such a supportive and vibrant local community that allows us to offer some terrific experiential learning activities. Students get to meet first responders from the local Police and Fire Departments, learn about science and nature with visits to the cranberry bog, and through speakers from the South Shore Science Center and much more. All of our students also have the unique academic opportunities like Spanish classes that begin in preschool, kindergarten robotics, instruction in Music, Physical Education, and even library and digital literacy class beginning in kindergarten. What really sets Sacred Heart Early Childhood Center apart is our foundation of faith. This is the root of our focus on integrity and character development. Students learn the importance of service and compassionate living as early as preschool. These are the experiences that set Sacred Heart apart from other educational endeavors. It’s also worth noting that we understand how busy our families are and with that in mind, the Early Childhood Center includes full and half day preschool options, full day pre-k, and full day kindergarten. And at the preschool and prekindergarten levels families may choose 2, 3, or 5 day schedules. We also offer very affordable before and after-school care for preschool to grade 6 right here in the same building! 5 I Sacred Heart School I January 2018

Discover Sacred Heart - Discover the difference Ann Taylor - Director of Admissions We invite you to come for a visit and explore what makes Sacred Heart School so special. We offer many opportunities for you to experience our campus, students, and faculty, and we welcome the chance to show you who we are in person. When you visit, we’ll help you discover why Sacred Heart School may be the best choice for your student. We host open house events, tours, and shadow day visits to introduce you to our school community and all that we offer in terms of our academic curriculum, faith formation, service opportunities, athletics and extra-curricular activities. When you visit, you will see and feel the Sacred Heart difference. Our campus is beautiful and our schools are warm and welcoming. In many ways, our school will feel like an extension of your family. The learning environment you choose for your child is more than just ‘what’ and ‘where’. “Who” we are, our Sacred Heart School community of students, families, faculty, staff, and administrators, will have the greatest influence on your child’s educational experience. We give our students the individual attention they need to achieve success and to become leaders. Our students learn how to balance faith, academics, and service in their lives. We help them discover their unique talents and abilities. The values students learn in our school ensure that they have the foundation to be the role models of their generation. We have an Open House at both the Elementary School and Early Childhood Center on Sunday, January 28th from 1 to 3 PM. During the Open House, you and your child will tour the school and will have an opportunity to speak with students, teachers, parents, and administrators. You will receive answers to your questions, and information about our application process and requirements. Your child entering elementary school will have an opportunity, in early spring, to spend part of a day “shadowing” with a current student. If your student is entering grades 7 through 12, contact us to schedule an individual tour and a shadow day visit for a day with a current student. The shadow day experience is often the best way for your son or daughter to know if Sacred Heart School may be a good “fit” for them. We look forward to meeting you and helping you to explore Sacred Heart School. Please contact the Admissions Office if you would like more information about the application process, or to schedule a visit. We may be reached at 781-585-7511, x 338 or by email: admissions@sacredheartkingston.com. 6 I Sacred Heart School I January 2018

Inspiring Minds I Fostering Faith - More Than a Tagline Andrea Hurm - Campus Minister The work of Campus Ministry at Sacred Heart is rooted in our mission, the Church’s mission, and the mission of the Sisters of Divine Providence: the Office of Campus Ministry seeks to deepen the students’ experience of the risen Christ through faith building, worship and prayer service, and community outreach to those in need. The Religious Studies Department and Campus Ministry work hand-in-hand to foster faith formation in students and the school community through academic classes. The students are immersed in the study of all faiths, the Church, sacred scriptures, inter-religious dialogue, and Catholic social teaching. The office of Campus Ministry joins forces with teachers and students to provide opportunities for spiritual growth and charitable services. Students in all grade levels are actively engaged living their faith. Our mission compels students to develop a keen respect for the dignity of all persons, respond with a call to action, and be dedicated to service through compassion, justice, and peace. Student commitment to the school’s mission is clearly demonstrated through the breadth of participation in various community activities and service projects. Campus Ministry works with students to help them grow in their relationship with God by providing opportunities to minister to the needs of the less fortunate both in our local community and beyond. Additionally, Campus Ministry works to deepen the individual faith experience of students and faculty through the planning of liturgies, class retreats, and prayer services. 7 I Sacred Heart School I January 2018

Located in the main academic building of the High School, the Campus Ministry office is the “hub” for the coordination of student service projects and food drives. Juniors and seniors may apply to become “Peer Ministers.” To be a Peer Minister is to “live a life worthy of the call you have been given.” (Ephesians 4:1) We believe that the Peer Ministers have been called by God to know Him, to love Him, and to serve Him while they embark on a lifelong journey to develop an ongoing deep relationship with Him. Through Peer Ministry, the students share God’s love with others at Sacred Heart and beyond. These committed individuals minister to their peers in a myriad of ways: planning retreats for grades 1-12 at Sacred Heart; preparing, volunteering, and assisting in all school Liturgies and prayer services; aiding local priests when called upon for help; becoming Extraordinary Ministers of the Holy Communion; brainstorming and executing food drives, clothing drives, sock drives, and other charitable events for the local community; feeding the less fortunate in the area. When they’re not helping to plan liturgies or prayer services, Peer Ministers are hard at work participating in the kind of service projects that are a hallmark of a Sacred Heart education. Compassion is at the root of all they do, from collecting food and clothing for local shelters and pantries to caring for the sick and spending time with the local elderly community. Students even give up their time during the busy Christmas season traveling to Boston to volunteer at Christmas in the City helping to bring holiday magic to thousands of Boston-area children and their families – families who’ve been experiencing the uncertainty of homelessness and the stress of poverty. They find time for all of this even after doing so much right here on campus like Friday Pizza and Prayer parties, organizing school retreats, and spearheading projects like our participation in Wreaths Across America by placing wreaths at several soldiers’ graves at the National Cemetery in Bourne.

Middle School - Easing the Transition Dr. Mike Gill - Principal, Middle-High School Our middle school approach allows all grade seven students to have the same set of teachers. This teaming allows teachers to meet regularly to discuss the students they have in common and to establish stronger teacher-student relationships based on an improved understanding of the students and their specific learning needs. We believe that this seventh grade team leads to improved student achievement, increased school-home communication, and an enhanced school climate. The team serves to create a more personalized learning environment that supports each student’s intellectual, social, emotional, physical, and spiritual development. In addition to the seventh grade team, Sacred Heart has a Middle School Enrichment team comprised of four enthusiastic teachers who plan enrichment activities for the students in grades 7 & 8 both during the school day and after hours. There are other benefits as well. Students have the opportunity to take part in high school sports and clubs and use the same outstanding facilities and resources. We’re always gratified when we see our middle school students looking to the upperclassmen as mentors and guides. This entire middle school dynamic is just one more thing that sets Sacred Heart apart.

Our Students Find Success in the Classroom and Beyond Dr. Michael Gill - Principal, Middle-High School Our students are succeeding at the highest levels both in the classroom and beyond. Our 2017 SAT and AP results far exceed the national and state average and stand out among local public and private high schools as well. Many schools only allow their best and brightest students to take AP level courses so that their scores stand out in comparisons. At Sacred Heart, we choose to strongly encourage all interested students to challenge themselves in AP classes and, when they do that, they perform well. Outside the classroom, our students are finding success on our fields, stages, and even on the airwaves! Our Nationally Ranked speech and debate program has produced multiple state champions in recent years as well as garnering several national awards. Two recent graduates are now attending college on four year scholarships based upon their achievements in speech and debate while attending our school. We also have two award winning student publications and, with the completion of our new media center, we’ve re-launched WSHS Sacred Heart’s broadcast journalism program! Our outstanding athletic program features eighteen varsity programs and several middle school programs. Many of our teams are perennial league champions and this year all five of our fall varsity teams made it to the state MIAA tournament. Sacred Heart High School also has a strong performing arts program; each year we present fall and spring productions that showcase our school’s talented actors and actresses! As a Catholic school our mission is rooted in faith and our faculty and staff is always actively working to instill the importance of that foundation in all of our students. We are focused on producing well-rounded individuals with strong moral character. Our community is comprised of students and teachers with a variety of religious backgrounds and our religion department puts tremendous emphasis on the importance of interfaith discourse and understanding. At the same time, Sacred Heart is proud of its Catholic identity and the religion department works in tandem with our campus minister and peer ministry students to coordinate our many retreats, liturgies, and service projects throughout the year. Commitment to service and compassionate living is a key component to a Sacred Heart education. The Sisters of Divine Providence have cultivated a strong tradition of service to others since the school was founded over 70 years ago. Today, that tradition is still thriving, and we’re proud that while service is not a graduation requirement, nearly all of our students take part in extensive service work throughout the year because of their intense desire to help those in need. 10 I Sacred Heart School I January 2018

Once a Saint - Always A Saint Tracey Merrill - Chief Development Officer A Sacred Heart education carries our students into the world and prepares them for success. Our mission and philosophy nurtures in our alumni a spiritual view of the world, cultivating in each a unique connection to social justice and civic engagement. Our alumni, who number more than 4,000, are a testament to the power of a Sacred Heart education. Our graduates cite the lasting impact of individualized, one-on-one instruction and the importance of strong friendships as the most cherished aspects of their Sacred Heart education. Any private school education is an investment. In weighing the the costs and opportunities available, families should know that our college preparatory curriculum culminates in a 100% college acceptance rate. In the past four years, our graduates have been accepted to 62 of the most highly competitive colleges, as ranked by Barron’s. From college, our alumni enter a diversity of careers, with large number pursuing finance, entrepreneurism and healthcare. One of the advantages of a Catholic school education is the power of networks available to you as an alumnus. Sacred Heart has alumni resources which can help our graduates connect with one another at events, via social media and our regularly published directory. To be a “Saint” is to be connected to the global Sacred Heart community forever. Our alumni providently return to the school as faculty, staff, volunteers, donors and even parents. Alumni opportunities for lifelong connections are are as important today as they were when the school began in 1964. Sacred Heart welcomes you to learn more about our community and to explore whether lifelong “Saint”hood fits for your family. 11 I Sacred Heart School I January 2018

Alumni Profiles - Where Can Sacred Heart Take You? Mr. Dana Sacchetti, a member of the Sacred Heart Class of 1995, delivered the 2017 commencement address. Currently, Dana serves as a senior Partnerships and Governance Officer for the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) in Rome. In this role, he is charged with directing resource mobilization and partnership strategies across WFP operations in Syria, Iraq, Yemen and the Middle East.

Dana previously served as Senior Political Affairs Officer at the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW). In this role, he served as part of the delegation that sought to resolve outstanding issues regarding Syria’s chemical weapons programme, and he also served as speechwriter for the Director-General. Prior to joining the OPCW, he served as Program Manager for the Programme of Action for Cancer Therapy (PACT) within the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). At the IAEA, he mobilized resources and managed a portfolio of cancer-related technical cooperation projects and initiatives across thirty countries in Africa, Asia and the Middle East. He earlier served as senior member of a team that dealt with the Iranian nuclear crisis and the Fukushima nuclear accident emergency in Japan.

Deirdre Hayes, Class of 1985 has enjoyed very unique experiences abroad including

the opportunity to go to England as a Professional Basketball Player and Coach. She also coached the England Under 18 women’s basketball team in four European Championships, and worked for a men’s professional basketball team as the General Manager of their charity, leading their community work as one of the largest programs in England. Apart from living in England Deirdre was also able to travel to places like Macedonia, Estonia, Israel, Turkey, Bulgaria, Slovakia, Romania, France, Ireland, Spain, Italy, and the Netherlands just to name a few. Since returning to the states, Deirdre has been working as the admissions and marketing director for a large nursing home. She told us, “The Sisters of Divine Providence’s mission statement resonates with me daily as I work with people who require help and compassion. I’ve internalized that mission as I work to make life easier for these people and help them to achieve personal and physical success.”

Jessie Costa-Dollerup , Class of 1996 works in Denmark in the field of museum

education, developing cultural history and art historical educational programs for school children and adults in the museum as an alternative learning space. “I’ve always had a keen love of the Humanities and the Arts and feel that my teachers and education at Sacred Heart fostered my interest in history languages. I was also involved in the Theater Arts program and Forensics Club which definitely influenced my choices at university both in the US and in Denmark to work with languages, alternative pedagogy, and museum learning.” Jessie said that the education she received at Sacred Heart, and especially a number of truly inspirational teachers she encountered during her years here helped to “encourage her perhaps unquenchable curiosity--the need to question and to keep questioning and striving for knowledge about the world at my feet and everything beyond. If you want to achieve something, find out what it takes to get there and get started!” 12 I Sacred Heart School I January 2018

Of Academics and Altruism Dave Ellis - Director of Communications John Adams wrote that, “There are two types of education… One should teach us how to make a living, and the other how to live.” Adams believed fervently that education and character development should go hand in hand. The Sacred Heart educational experience is rooted in that same belief. The Sisters of Divine Providence founded this school over 70 years ago to fulfill a need for that exact type of education here on the South Shore. Since then our school has flourished, combining outstanding academic preparation and a focus on service and compassionate living rooted in our strong Catholic tradition. There’s a lot of talk in the education sphere, particularly when it comes to private schools, about differentiators and the factors that set one school apart from all the others. You don’t have to look far to find that this approach of placing equal emphasis on academic rigor and educating for character and compassion is what sets Sacred Heart apart. While it’s true that all schools endeavor to instill strong values and to develop their students’ quality of character, at Sacred Heart it is the foundation of everything we do. Even our youngest students at the Early Childhood Center are learning about, and participating in, service activities. It’s an inspiring thing to see preschool and kindergarten age students so enthusiastic about helping others and demonstrating a real understanding of the importance of helping those who are less fortunate. Having this deep understanding of the world around them, and being able to look beyond themselves, allows our students to develop a curiosity that drives their studies and fuels their desire to find ways to better the world. In the elementary school, we see our students beginning to define their interests and talents. We’re blessed with outstanding faculty who foster those existing talents and encourage them to pursue and develop new ones. Our small class sizes give our teachers the ability to build strong relationships with students and gain better understanding of their individual learning style. Because of this, we’re able to offer our students the greatest chance for success by tailoring much of their instruction to meet their needs. All of this leads to some really amazing results in high school and beyond. It’s very exciting to see our students actively choosing paths of study that lead them to careers focused on helping others and improving the world as a whole. We have students doing in-depth study on alternative energy, preparing for medical school and missions work, and honing speech and debate skills for careers in politics; I could write a whole article on the diversity of our students’ ambitions. We have artists and athletes, historians and scientists, future teachers and doctors, and so much more. But they all share something in common: a desire to positively impact society, both locally and on a global level. In this insert, there are profiles of our alumni who have gone on to do some pretty amazing things. In their choices, one can see, the impact of a Sacred Heart education. Whether it’s working for the UN to end hunger in countries across the Middle East, spearheading technological innovation at Google, or even leading a congregation right here in the Boston Archdiocese, our graduates are always making us proud not only of their achievements but of who they are as individuals. After all, to return to John Adams and some wise words he once wrote to his son John Quincy about his schooling, “You will ever remember that all the end of study is to make you a good man and a useful citizen.” 13 I Sacred Heart School I January 2018
