Sweet Vervin’. This year’s staff greatly improved its writing and InDesign skills. Editors Say Sayonara By MIRIAM MELLER & CARLY NYMAN The 2012-13 Verve staff faced many new challenges coming in with an inexperienced staff and a lot of expectations to live up to after the previous years. The now, notso-new Verve adviser, Ms. Anne Weisgerber, has really guided our team with her vast knowledge in the journalism world and adroit skills with InDesign. We knew this year would bring lots of change after receiving feedback from The Columbia Scholastic Press Association. Because of its critique, we decided the best way to improve would be to revamp Verve’s entire style. With help from SPC Printing, we were able to move to more professional style standards. New techonology graced the Verve this year, too. By hijacking the more modern Mac computers from the Writing Center, we were able to get our paper laid out on time and not have to struggle over sticky keys and slow programs. We also recieved a generous grant from SEF to purchase a new camera. This improved the quality of our photos and now we don’t have to always publish poor cell phone shots. With our growing staff size, we
were able to cover a wider range of news topics, and send reporters out into the field. Shout out to our dedicated readers that are desperately searching for this issue’s Akey Responds. If you haven’t noticed, this isn’t it, and there will not be one this issue. Sorry not sorry to these lovely readers. But actually, we apologize to Mr. Akey. We also want to say sorry to the Verve staff, which originally thought we would be really easygoing. We decided being assertive gets things done quicker. Take our advice, Tommy, Gwen, Alex and Stephanie (yes, those are next year’s co-editors-in-chief!) We want to give a special thanks to all the staff members that helped pull the paper together over the year. Thanks to Mr. Schauer for updating our Verve and Curve mastheads and the administration for being so supportive and constructive. We appreciate your tough love. And the most important thanks goes out to our readers all over Summit and even still at various colleges around the country. Good luck to next year’s Verve staff. Congratulations to the class of 2013 and we hope you enjoy our final issue.

World Language: Shirley Orellana By EMMA STANDING Shirley Orellana has taken the SHS language department by storm and is this year’s recipient of the language award of excellence. Not only does Shirley have an incredible passion for languages, but excels and continues to prove to her teachers and classmates that this is something she is truly good at. After moving to Summit from Peru, Shirley became interested in music after her love for Korean pop brought her to meet people from all over the world. Now a senior, Shirley takes both Chinese and AP Spanish and does extremely well in
both. Although it’s not offered at the school, she also enjoys learning Korean and other languages on her own. Mrs. Hermo, Shirley’s Spanish teacher is probably one of her biggest supporters stating, “I am so incredibly proud of Shirley. She’s a model of what all immigrant students can achieve.” Shirley plans on studying languages as a minor next year in college. She stated that one of her biggest dreams after high-school was to continue to understand other cultures to help other people. “I want to be the person that breaks the barrier and can help people of different cultures understand one another.” Shirley’s aspirations and high goals have led her to reach this amazing point in her life. Her love for languages and devotion to the subject definitely makes her a deserving winner for the award this year. Congrats Shirley!
Industrial Arts: Joshua Smith By DAVID MEYERS S u m m i t High School’s award of excellence for the industrial arts celebrates the student who displays great amounts of creativity and passion. This year, the honor has been granted to senior Joshua Smith. Josh has been taking classes in computer graphics since his freshman year and has excelled from the very beginning. He says he used these classes to “step out of [his] comfort zone” and develop new projects to help him become a better designer.
Josh acknowledged how special it was to win this award saying, “This is a great accomplishment for me and it is nice to be recognized for my commitment to the study of the industrial arts for all of these years.” Smith’s inspiration has come from one of his long-time teachers, Mr. Schauer, who supported Josh as the pick for the award because, as Schauer describes it, “He is constantly working. If I don’t have an assignment for him, he comes up with one on his own. He also has a great eye for what he is doing.” Joshua plans to continue studying computer graphics next year by majoring in graphic design at American University and hopes to find an internship in graphic design to perfect his skills with real world application.
Vocational Education: Christine Zeledon
By STEPHANIE OLLOM
The Union County Vocation- Technical School district is a specialized program designed to advance students in specific work fields. One outstanding student in this program is Christine Zeledon, who is participating in the Certified Nurse Aide (CNA)/ Home Health Aide (HHA) field. This two-year program prepares students to be a certified nurses’ aide through a combination of classroom and clinical instruction. Christine is in her second year in the program, and fifth year at Sum-
mit High School. She also works at the Structured Learning Experience a SAGE Eldercare in Summit. This opportunity allows her to practice the skills she is learning. Mentor Mrs. Patricia Walsh said in her awards speech that “Today, I see Christine Zeledon, a confident woman, who is proud of her accomplishments and excited about her future, instead of the shy freshman she was five years ago.” Christine is also one of ten candidates who was selected to participate in the New Jersey Health Care Employers Youth Transition to Work Apprenticeship Scholarship Program. Here she will continue to prepare for the CNA exam, to become a nurse’s aide, and gain more experience in the field while earning 12 college credits.

Visual Arts: Sarah Runo By MEREDITH ROBERTSON Walking through the halls of SHS, it wouldn’t be a surprise to catch a glimpse of the artwork of senior Sarah Runo, who is being awarded for her excellence in Visual Art. After growing up with a passion for this form of expression, as well as taking art classes for most of her high school career, she found a form of creativity in which she fell in love. “I’m so honored to be presented this award,” she explained, “I really have a passion for art and it means so much to be rec-
ognized for doing something I love.” Sarah credited her grandma as her greatest role model in her artistic career, as well as Ms. Coyle and Mr. Walker. “I enjoy all art, but specifically painting. I had grown up watching my grandma, who is a water color artist,” states Sarah, “She tried to teach me when I was younger, but art is something that you have to create yourself.” Ms. Coyle, the presenter of the award, explained, “We chose Sarah for this award because her artwork truly speaks for itself. She puts her heart and soul into everything and it really shows.” Following graduation, she plans to attend Savannah College of Art and Design, where she is enrolled in animation classes. In the future, she aspires to become an animator for Disney or Pixar.
Technology: Hafeez Ahmed Sheikh By JACKSON SIDEBOTTOM H a f e e z Ahmed Sheikh was given an award for his excellence in the field of technology. He’s ecstatic about receiving recognition for his hard work in something he loves to do, saying “It’s really cool, I’m grateful for being awarded for something that doesn’t really feel like work to me.” Hafeez’s love for technology is very apparent and well-respected. The presenter of the award, Mr. Schauer, had high praise for Hafeez saying, “He is one of the hardest
working kids I know. He is in here early and late almost every day, wanting to work and get better. His dedication to this field is incredible, and I can think of no one else as deserving of this award. He was a clear-cut, number one choice.” Hafeez is very grateful to those who influenced and encouraged him, Schauer being one of them, “Mr. Schauer was great, he really was a major influence and helped me get a lot deeper into technology.” Hafeez has an innate ability working with robots and hopes to continue working with them in the future. Hafeez hopes to improve his prowess in the field of technology at the New Jersey Institute of Technology.
Family and Consumer Sciences: Emily Grace Newcomb
By NIC LALICATO
Every year a handful of students are given an Award of Excellence for their superior interest in certain classes, and this year Grace Newcomb recieved the award for Fashion and Design. Grace was honored by the award, detailing,“Winning this award is so important to me because it shows the importance of pushing yourself in areas outside of the basic academic classes.” For Grace, fashion has always been a big part of her everyday life. “Glamour has basically been my bible since middle school. I got into
year in Fashion 1. I followed this by taking fashion 2 sophomore year, then I took independent classes over the summer at LIM college and FIT. “This year I was able to take fashion 3 as an independent study.” Mrs. Hardesty, the Fashion Design teacher, explains, “Grace was a pleasure to have in class. She practically teaches herself. Her name exemplifies who she is.” “I’m so appreciative of Mrs. Hardesty,” Grace expresses, “ She has been my main source of support even with my classes outside of the high school.” Fashion will always be a portion of Grace’s life, she tells, “I’m planning on studying math and science in college but I’m definitely going to keep fashion and design a hobby because it is something I really enjoy.”

She received this award because of her outstanding academic performance throughout her four years at Summit High School. This is the first year that the high school is offering the award. Before receiving the award, Mr. Sears arranged a luncheon in his office to get to know her a little bit better. Chelsea was very happy to hear that she won; “ At first I was really surprised to hear that I won the
award, but now that I think about it, I am really happy I won it.” Chelsea will be attending the University of Virginia where she will be participating in the Echols scholar program. The Echols scholar program is a chance for students to choose their own career paths without having any restrictions or requirements. There is only a select group of the top incoming freshman at UVA that are accepted into the program. One of the biggest influences in Chelseas’s life is her mom because she is always encouraging her to do her best in school and at any endeavor she pursues. This award is a great accomplishment to show for these four years that Chelsea has had at Summit High School. She can’t wait to see what the future has in store for her.
Social Studies: Nicholas Abbott BY WILL LYCAN This year, the Summit High School Award of Excellence in the field of Social Studies was awarded to Nicholas Abbott. Abbott also feels that “it is really

Eagerly asking what activity we were
doing next. Annie is a hardworking, athletically talented young woman.” When asked about what she hopes the coming post-graduate years will bring, Schmidt explained, “I’m going to Loyola University Maryland next year, and I plan to play club field hockey there and get involved with the teams.” At Summit High School, Schmidt was a field hockey varsity captain. Schmidt includes her family as her inspiration for her love of athletics. “My mom was definitely an influence because she taught me most of what I learned about sports, even badminton,” she exclaimed. “She was my first field hockey, basketball, softball, and lacrosse coach. She helped me with everything from diving to being the best at kickball.”
Publications: Katherine Brown This year’s recipient for the Award of Excellence in publications is Kate-Lynn Brown. KateLynn first joined the yearbook after becoming interested in photography. After joining she realized she loved the layout and editing process and has been part of yearbook ever since. This award means a lot to her after being part of the yearbook’s creative team for three years. She exclaimed, “I’m so excited to be getting this award. Creating the yearbook was a yearlong process, and
it was a lot of work. Receiving this award makes all that effort worth it!” Mr. Kratch, the presenter of the award, stated, “One could not ask for a more dedicated and thoughtful editor for the Yearbook, Kate-Lynn and her co-editor Emily McDonnell made an excellent and seamless team and did a great job of putting this year’s edition of The Top together.” Her work has been influenced greatly by her peers, “On tough days, I always thought of the end product. This book is for all the students at SHS and I knew it was my job to make it great for everyone.” English has always been her passion and she will continue studying it at Drew University next fall.

Mathematics: William Gerard By JAMIE MACPHERSON Will Gerard is this year’s recipient of the Mathematics Award. Throughout his four years in the high school math program, he has excelled and reached the highest math offered to him, Multivariable Calculus. When questioned about recieving the prestigious award Will exclaimed, “It’s nice to be recognized in a field you greatly enjoy. The award itself is cool, but the idea that I have excelled in the subject is personally rewarding.” Will’s math teacher, Mr. Thayer
had the honor of presenting the award to Will. Thayer explains, “The amount of hard work and dedication Will has put into the subject is incredible, and it has surely paid off.” Will regards Mr. Thayer as, “a mentor and a fabulous teacher. His grasp on the material he teaches and his ability to work students through difficult sections is highly advantageous to the student. “Though all four of my math teachers have made a difference in my ability to excel at the subject, Mr. Thayer has been the most impactful.” Next year Will is bringing his knowledge to the University of Virginia, where he plans to pursue a major in the field of math.
Science: Tasha Kewalramani By MADDIE SIMKO Throughout Tasha Kewalramani’s high school career, she has hit milestone achievements in the field of science, such as attending the Governor’s School of Engineering last summer. It is no surprise she won the Science Award of Excellence. “I was overjoyed when I found out I won the award. It was a great culmination to all my research efforts I have made throughout high school,” she explained. Surprisingly, science has not always been Tasha’s favorite sub-
ject. She reveals, “It was not until I joined the science research program sophomore year that I realized I really loved the subject and the endless possibilities associated with it. It forces me to think outside the box, and that’s what I love about it.” Dr. Greene, one of her teachers in the Science Research Program offered at the school, speaks highly of Tasha’s work ethic. “I’ve worked with Tasha for the past couple years quite intensely on science projects. “She is the most dedicated, upbeat, positive, and energetic person I have met.” Tasha plans to persue her passion for science next fall as she heads off to college. “I will be attending Cornell University for engineering, but I’m just not sure what field yet,” she notes.
Instrumental Music: Christopher Chen By ELLIE SCHAFFER Christopher Chen won this year’s Instrumental Music Award of Excellence. He plays violin and piano for the Region and All State orchestras, and for the All Eastern and National Honors Orchestras. “There are many people, including my family, teachers, and classmates who have sculpted my musical development,” explained the award winner. “I’m flattered by this honor. The Summit Music Department has always been extremely supportive of me, and being a part of it has allowed me to flourish not only as a musician, but as an element of the Summit Community,” Chen expressed.
He also received the 2013 NJ Governor’s Award in Instrumental Music, is concertmaster of the SHS orchestra, and a driving force in the superior Hilltop String Quartet. Additionally, Chen has won the Goldblatt Competition on both piano and violin. His orchestra teacher Ms. Barbara Vierschilling, describes Chris as “… not only a unique musician, but a unique person as well. He is a strategic and analytic thinker so his music has a depth and maturity beyond his years. He can hold an audience spellbound and hanging on his every note.” Chen explains his passion for music as “its own distinct form of art, theoretically unbounded by restrictions and limitations. Although I am not immediately dedicating my next four years at NYU to studying only music, there is nothing that goes to say I won’t in the future.”

English: Sofia Vizitiu By MEGAN SHAW This year, for the 2013 Awards of Excellence, Sofia Vizitiu was presented the English Award. Sofia has been a successful, motivated English student for as long as she can remember. “I’ve always loved reading and writing,” she explained, “but my 7th grade English teacher, Mrs. Dumaresq, really fostered that love in me. I would hang out with her after school and we would have in-depth conversations about various books and movies and other life topics of importance.” Upon receiving the award Sofia
recalls, “I feel really honored that the department would choose me for this award; it means a lot to me since English has been my favorite class for as long as I can remember and the teachers I’ve had in that subject are people I value very highly.” Ms. Velez, presenter of the award, expressed, “Sofia is an amazing English student; she is passionate about reading, she is passionate about writing, and it comes very naturally to her. She clearly loves to read. She can hold amazing conversations. She is so articulate. She is a great student to have in the classroom.” Now that the year is almost over, Sofia looks forward to college and her 2013-2014 year plans. Sofia happily explained, “A year from now, I’ll be finishing my freshmen year at Tufts!”
Drama: Kevin Meier By EMME HARRIS Kevin Meier is the recipient of the Drama Award of Excellence this year, and is well known for his excellence and dedication behind stage. “Getting this award is a great honor, and to be recognized for drama is a dream come true. “I have been working in the drama program ever since the start of my freshman year, and it has helped me to grow as an artist, builder, and person,” explained Meier. Mrs. Anne Poyner raves,“Kevin Meier is the most passionate in
the program and really cares about making the program great, including everybody even the younger people, and is very professional.” Kevin reveals the two people that inspired him the most to get involved in theatre, “There is one person who got me interested in technical theatre, Ben Zukoff. A friend of mine from when I was young, he really became a role model to me and taught me a lot in my freshman year, and inspired me to keep doing theatre.” “Also, when I met our adult technical director Ben Molnar, I was hooked into this crazy theatre world!” This time next year, Meier plans on continuing theatre, and should be finishing up his first year at Ithaca College, where he will continuing to pursue drama as a career in the future. Brad revealed that biggest musical influence would have to be Mr. Mallette, who only has positive comments about Brad and how deserving he is of this award. “Brad is an outstanding role model inside and outside of the chorus room. He has vocally done everything he could have done to improve his voice and is more than deserving of this award,” Mallete comments. Brad revealed his plans for the future, stating “After my high school graduation, I’m taking a gap year and then going to college afterwards. “I’m definitely going to continue singing, I’m just not exactly sure how yet.” Brad is honored and elated to be receiving the vocal music award and cannot wait to continue his passion and incredible ability to sing throughout the rest of his life.
