Obituary

GENETT “JENNIE” CHRISTINA HEPBURN

Born in New Providence, Bahamas on the 14th day of October, 1960 to Albert and Karen Hepburn (deceased); she was the second of ten children. Jennie as she was affectionately called was educated at Yellow Elder Primary, C.H. Reeves Junior and R.M. Bailey Senior High Schools. Jennie was very meticulous and paid attention to details. She was good with her hands and as a result, the skill of sewing came natural to her. It was therefore no surprise that her career choice was as a seamstress and tailor. Jennie took pride in her work and always delivered quality service and excellent work. She ensured that her customers were pleased so that they would return. They sure did. Jennie’s number one client was Bishop Hepburn (her father). She sewed most of his pants and altered those that he purchased. Jennie’s work life took her through Creation by Chiquita (Jean Sherman), Charles of Nassau, Your Friendly Tailor, Par Bay’s Tailoring and Howard’s Custom Tailoring - where she worked until her demise. At Howard’s Tailoring, Jennie was Howard Cunningham (the Proprietor’s) right hand. He could have depended on her in every aspect of the job. Her honesty preceded her and led him to appoint her to facilitate the book-keeping for the Company. In this capacity Jennie ensured that every dollar was accounted for. She always bragged about what wonderful boss she had and how caring and loving his wife “Kim” was toward her. Her co-workers loved her and they shared an excellent working relationship. Jennie did not have any biological children, however she had many Godchildren and adopted Godchildren whom she treated and cared for as her very own. She would have them come over to sleep, take them downtown or to the mall shopping, to the movies and for lunch. Jennie had a heart of love. This was evident by the spirit of giving that followed her. She gave of her finances to those she knew very well, hardly knew and to strangers. Once she met you, she became your friend because once you started a conversation with her, be ready for a long one – she was quiet but was never lost for words. Like her mother “Karen” (deceased), Jennie kept in touch with everyone she

met. She had over 340 contacts in her phone and took delight in sending out what’s app messages, biblical scriptures, videos and encouraging posts to get her friends’ day started. Jennie gave her life to the Lord at a very young age. She recognized that in order to inherit eternal life, one must be born again. As a preacher’s kid, she made the decision of her own to serve the Lord with all she had. She did not make a lot of noise but she had a relationship with God and held fast to the Commandment that we must love our neighbour as ourselves. This she displayed in every facet of her life for she was always giving and caring and not looking for anything in return. Jennie was very active in the United Christian Churches. She was a part of the Sunday School, Women’s Ministry and Prayer band. Jennie served in the choir from a teenager - up to her death at age 60. She had the best alto you would ever hear and she sang from the depths of her heart. She also played an active role with the musicians where she was the back-up drummer. Oh yes, she beat the drums and was able to keep up with the boys. However, when she saw Delano Knowles (the lead drummer) walk through the doors she would politely remove herself from the drums and take her seat in the congregation – what humble and respectful spirit.

On 4th December, 2020 while at work, Jennie experienced a punctured aneurysm and was taken to the hospital where she remained until her release on 16th December, 2020. When Jennie returned home, she was doing very well - happy in spirit, talking, walking and touching base with her what’s app friends. On Saturday, 19th December, 2020 Jennie woke up early and met Bridget E. her sister in the kitchen and indicated that she felt a little gas in her stomach. She was served her breakfast with tea which she ate. She sat up for a few minutes then returned to her bedroom. After a visit from her Godchild Kendia Demeritte and what’s app communication with a few friends, Jennie went to rest and in a matter of minutes was found by her father Bishop Albert H. Hepburn and Bridget E. in an unresponsive condition. She was taken to the Princess Margaret Hospital where she died on Sunday, 27th December, 2020. OPENING SENTENCES Pastor Charles Young, Senior Pastor MODERATOR Pastor Lester Thurston, Senior Assistant Pastor OPENING HYMN I FEEL LIKE TRAVELING ON My heavenly home is bright and fair I feel like traveling on No pain nor death can enter there I feel like traveling on. (Chorus) Yes I feel like traveling on I feel like traveling on That heavenly mansion shall be mine I feel like traveling on Its glittering towers the sun outshines I feel like traveling on That heavenly mansion shall be mine I feel like traveling on. The Lord has been so good to me I feel like traveling on Until that blessed home I see I feel like traveling on. INVOCATION Pastor Lester Thurston

HYMN THE CITY OF GOLD There's a city of Light, where there cometh no night; ‘Tis a city of beauty untold; All my treasures are there and its beauty I’ll share, When I get to that city of gold. (Chorus) When I leave all trouble and care, I will say good morning up there; I will have great gladness untold, When I get to that city of gold There’s no sorrow up there in that city so fair And no sickness can enter I’m told; Shadows all will have flown, I will meet friend I’ve known When we get to that city of gold. Won’t you go there with me to the home of the free, Would you see heaven’s beauty unfold? If you will come along, we will sing heaven’s song When we get to that City of gold. OLD TESTAMENT READING Psalm 130:1-8 KJV Minister LaDonna Thurston 1 Out of the depths have I cried unto thee, O LORD. 2 Lord, hear my voice: let thine ears be attentive to the voice of my supplications. 3 If thou, LORD, shouldest mark iniquities, O Lord, who shall stand? 4 But there is forgiveness with thee, that thou mayest be feared. 5 I wait for the LORD, my soul doth wait, and in his word do I hope. 6 My soul waiteth for the Lord more than they that watch for the morning: I say, more than they that watch for the morning. 7 Let Israel hope in the LORD: for with the LORD there is mercy, and with him is plenteous redemption. 8 And he shall redeem Israel from all his iniquities.

NEW TESTAMENT READING Revelation 21:1-7 KJV Antoinette Lorraine McKenzie 1And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea. 2 And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. 3 And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God. 4 And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away. 5 And he that sat upon the throne said, Behold, I make all things new. And he said unto me, Write: for these words are true and faithful. 6 And he said unto me, it is done. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. I will give unto him that is athirst of the fountain of the water of life freely. 7 He that overcometh shall inherit all things; and I will be his God, and he shall be my son. CLOSING HYMN HEAVEN’S JUBILEE Some glad morning, we shall see Jesus in the air Coming after you and me, joy is ours to share What rejoicing, that will be, when the saints shall raise Headed for that jubilee, yonder in the skies. (Chorus) Oh what singing, Oh what shouting On that happy morning, when we all shall rise Oh what glory, hallelujah? When we meet our blessed Saviour in the skies. Seems that now I almost see all the sainted dead Rising for that jubilee, that is just ahead In the twinkling of an eye, changed with them to be All the living saints to fly to that jubilee. When with all the heavenly host, we’ll begin to sing, Singing in the Holy Ghost how the heav’ns ring Millions there will join the song, with them we shall be Praising Christ thru ages long, Heaven’s jubilee. BENEDICTION Pastor Lester Thurston Now to Him that is able to keep you from falling, and to present you faultless before the presence of His glory with exceeding joy, to the only wise God our saviour, be glory and majesty, dominion and power both now and ever, Amen.

RECESSIONAL THE GLAD REUNION DAY There will be a happy meeting in heaven I know When we see the many loved ones we’ve known here below. Gather on the blessed hilltops with hearts all aglow. That will be a glad reunion day. (Chorus) Glad day, a wonderful day, Glad day, a glorious day; There with all the holy angels and loved ones to stay, That will be a glad reunion day. There within the holy city we’ll sing and rejoice, Praising Christ the blessed Saviour with heart and with voice. Tell him how we came to love Him and make Him our choice. That will be a glad reunion day. When we live a million years in that wonderful place Basking in the love of Jesus, beholding His face. It will seem but just a moment of praising His grace. That will be glad reunion day.

TRIBUTE TO MY DAUGHTER

I do not know if words would be enough to express my tribute to you because you were such an amazing daughter – but I will try. Your life was preparing you for this time; time to be with our heavenly father and I find solace in knowing that you are in the presence of God. When I look in the mirror, I see your face. When I close my eyes, I feel comfort knowing that you are my guardian angel. When I speak, I feel your presence, when I kneel to pray especially on Sunday morning, I hear your voice singing with me. When I reminisce on all you have accomplished, my heart smiles. When I look at photos of you, I know that you loved me deeply. You were not only a great daughter but a loving sister and friend to many. Your life reflected a Christ-like spirit which led many to talk well of you – including your boss and coworkers. They are sadden by your passing and will greatly miss you. Jennie you did everything for me, especially after the death of Mother Karen Hepburn my wife. You rushed from work to prepare my supper; made sure my room was in perfect shape and on Sunday mornings, see that I am well dressed. Additionally, you took good care of your Godchildren and many others. You were so talented, not only did you have the strong alto like your Aunt Julia, but you beat the drums in church like a professional. We are going to miss that voice, while Heaven will glory in it. Jennie you have fought a good fight, you have finished your course, you have kept the faith and you will at that day receive your crown of righteousness that faded not away. Jennie I love you and wish that you would have stayed with me, but God took you because you were only loan to me but belong to Him. I wish to close with a verse of scripture taken from Acts 13th chapter verse 36 – For “Jennie”, “after she had served her own generation by the will of God fell on sleep...”. Sleep on Jennie take your rest. I love you but God loves you best. As much as this hurts, I can find peace knowing that you are one of God’s heavenly angels, who in time, will sing praises to our awesome God. I am writing this with tears in my eyes because I love you so much, you left such a great legacy. I miss you so much. Your spirit will always remain with me. Goodbye Jennie.

Daddy

TRIBUTE FROM YOUR Genett, this hurts so much - you were truly unique. Jennie as we called you, we know that you are in God’s presence and where ever God is, it’s heaven. But girl we miss you so much! Our hearts ache and the tears continue to fall. There are so many fond memories of you – you enjoyed taking photos (including selfies) and recording videos whenever there was a function. You knew how to have fun and enjoyed travelling. Jennie you did not drive, and Bridget E. normally transported you when you needed to go somewhere. But on some Saturdays when you felt like going shopping, you would get dressed and head to the bus stop to catch the jitney – maybe you just liked going on the jitney to meet people – and you would be gone from in the morning until late afternoon. You always seemed to have a jovial spirit – we rarely heard you complain about any pain and appeared to be content with whatever was going on in your life. You had a love for everyone and children took a delight in being around you. Your love for children was evident as you played games with them, handed them goody bags, and cared for them. Jennie, you made friends with everyone you met and so many persons gravitated to you because of your pleasant personality. A gem like you seemed impossible to have had an enemy. You may not have been making a hefty salary but you have helped so many people by your good deeds of giving. The lives that you have impacted are admirable. Even though you had a reserved demeanor, once someone engaged you in a conversation, you would talk them weak. Because of your kind, caring, loving and humble spirit you were just loveable. Not a trouble maker at all – you were a peace maker - you barely argued. Whenever we tried to provoke you into an argument, you would always ignore us by humming a song and leaving the room. Your neatness is commendable - Girl you just loved looking in the mirror making sure that your face was in order and that not a strand of your hair was out of place. You made sure that your clothing fit perfectly and that those heels were nice

and greased when you were wearing sandals. The Hepburn’s residence is always spick and span. If you saw a grain of sand on the rug you would pick it up. You were one of the best seamstress/tailor, who made sure that our clothes were properly altered when necessary. The beautiful memories that we have of you will be with us for the rest of our lives. The Hepburn girls’ chain has been broken and life will never be the same without you Jennie, but when God calls us home the chain will link again. We Love you so much! Arimentha, Lorraine, LaDonna, Bridget E., Ingrid and Paula (adopted).

TRIBUTE FROM YOUR

Brothers

We can cry and close our minds, be empty and turn our backs or we can do what she’d want. Smile open our eyes love and go on. Jennie as we called her - you have earned those wings of freedom dear sister and you will always be our angel forever in our hearts. We never knew that God would call your name so soon, but in life we loved you dearly and in death we will do the same. Our hearts are broken to lose you, but you did not go alone for part of us went with you the day God called you home. Precious memories you left and even though we cannot see you, we know you are far better off in God’s care. Our chain is broken and it seems rough but as God calls us one by one the chain will link again. Sleep on Jennie you have earned your place in eternal peace with God. You will be missed. Andrew, Gary, Ryan, Marvin, Levardo and The Honourable T. Desmond Bannister (adopted)

Nieces and Nephews TRIBUTE FROM YOUR

“We had a wonderful aunt, one who never really grew old, her smile was made of sunshine, and her heart was made of gold.”

Genett affectionately called Jennie has been very influential to all of us during our childhood and adult lives. She was quiet but very strong in her demeanor. Her love for us was unconditional because she would take the time to call each of us and text to make sure that we were all doing fine. We lived for birthdays because we knew that one person who would have remembered our day was her. She knew everyone’s birthday and she ensured that you heard from her. Some of us experienced our first bus ride downtown with Aunt Jennie. Those days were so much fun! Our many family trips to the United States or our trips to the Bluff, Cat Island are memories that will forever linger within us. By the way she loved Wally; (Walmart)!! She cooked well and after each party you can rest assure that the kitchen when she is done would be spotless. “Yes” Aunt Jennie was very neat not only with the house but it also showed with her work ethics. She sowed some of us designer dresses and suits that looked like factory work. She also was a hair stylist. On weekends she would plait our hair and groom us for church the following day. If we slept South Beach she made sure Sunday morning you had your bath and breakfast and was ready for morning devotion before church. Although Aunt Jennie never had any biological children, all of her nieces and nephews were in fact her children. If you ever thought about knowing what it would be like to know a real life angel that was Aunt Jennie.

Aunt Jennie could multi task, she even played the drum set at church. She had one particular beat that seemed to fit in any song; we always wondered about how she did that? She was also quick on her feet. One memorable moment in Cat Island we recalled Aunt Jennie and Torrie being chased by a huge cow. She wore a skirt but somehow that did not prevent her from moving like she wore a pair of tights and sprinting cleats. Torrie looked back to see where Aunt Jennie was but all she saw was the cow. Aunt Jennie moved so fast that Torrie never saw her pass her. This is how she moved so fast into the arms of our Lord and Saviour. Life has shown us again its hurtful side by taking you away from us when we didn’t see it coming. There’s no way to make up for time lost and now gone but we hope wherever you are in heaven, you know that you are truly loved and we know that you now have eternal peace and joy. Love Always, Your nieces and nephews

Sisters and Brothers-in-Law TRIBUTE FROM YOUR

"At times, your own light goes out and is rekindled by a spark from another person. Each of us has a cause to think with deep gratitude of those who have lighted the flame within us." Jennie, we appreciate what a gift it was to have been afforded the opportunity to have shared in your life. Everything seems so strange and surreal, we ask the question every day is it a dream, or is it real? Despite the loss, we are grateful for the moment of beauty, love and kindness you have displayed amongst family and friends. You made us not only felt like sisters and brothers-in-law but sisters and brothers. Jennie, you were extraordinary and special in your own way. If we were to write about the reasons why we were grateful for you on little pieces of paper they would fill up an entire room. Your dedication, understanding and acts of kindness meant so much to us. It was a privilege to be able to experience life alongside you. Jennie, you were amazing and we will cherish you forever. Joycelyn, Sherese, Kiyshanna, Patrice, Dr. Rolf Wichmann, Pastor Lester Thurston and Jim LaRoda.

TRIBUTE FROM YOUR

In Memory of My Sister, Genett “Jennie My dear sister, you are gone much too soon. I will remember you most for your kindness, thoughtfulness and cheerfulness. You were a tender, caring and giving soul who always cherished and prioritized others. You had a unique way of making everyone feel important and special. Your modesty and humility made your charm and talent even more admirable. Although I will miss you immensely, I take comfort in knowing that you are resting in the everlasting arms of our Lord and Savior. Love, Arimentha

TRIBUTE FROM THE MCGREGOR CLAN Jennie, little did we know or could imagine that 27th December, 2020 would forever be etched in our memories. You were plucked from the Hepburn's rose garden and called home to your eternal reward. We prayed, hoped and longed for your recovery, but God had other plans. Your work on earth was complete, and now you are at rest with your heavenly Father. We will forever cherish those special memories of you, the caring sister, faithful servant, woman of faith, encourager and beautiful rose. Your candle may have gone out, but your memories would live on. The McGregor Clan

Godchildren

TRIBUTE FROM YOUR You were our mother, we were your children, Your home became ours. We would come with little but leave with much, Only those who truly knew you, could verify such. You did the simplest and most thoughtful things with love, Just to put smiles on our faces. Oh to turn back the hands of time, To hear you laugh again and feel the warm embraces. There are no words to describe, the pain we’re feeling inside. Only the good Lord sees, the many tears we try to hide. Every call, voice note, tokens of love and time spent together Have now become our keepsake. Our angel with a big heart of gold. So happy, loving and kind. Always concerned about our wellbeing, And proud of our accomplishments every time. The reflection of the many beautiful memories we’ve created, will somehow help us to get through this. Goddie, you’ve left an imprint on our hearts like no other, Your presence and voice will be a great miss. Queen of our hearts, take your eternal rest!

Love Your Godchildren.
