LIFE CHANGING ADVENTURE FOR ALL THANKS FOR ANOTHER GREAT SUMMER!

2018 SUMMER CAMP PICTURES This summer we had an absolutely amazing staff comprised of 21 young adults from not only the US but also Mexico and Zambia. The description we often got of our staff was small but mighty, and boy did they prove just how mighty they are! This summer the staff did so many incredible things it’s impossible to name them all but here are a few; they formed lasting friendships with each other, aided in facilitating our new archery program, helped campers conquer their fears at the ropes course, and most of all they not only grew in their faith but helped each and every camper develop their own relationship with God. We are so thankful and blessed for each and every staff member we had this summer, and we can’t wait to see them again soon! FALL 2018 | 262-742-2352 | www.lutherdale.org

GOD’S WORK, OUR HANDS MEAL PACKING EVENT SEPTEMBER 9TH

For the second year now Lutherdale has partnered with the Outreach Program to fight domestic hunger. In conjunction with the ELCA God’s Work, Our Hands program, churches are invited to come and package macaroni and cheese meals for distribution to local food pantries. It is a fun, intergenerational event, and each church takes the case of meals they packed home with them to deliver to a food pantry in their community. Over 150 volunteers came out this year to package the 15,000 meals. Here are some of this year’s participants.

NEW FACES AT LUTHERDALE EMILY BISHOP

PROGRAM MINISTRY ASSISTANT This summer we hired a new Program Ministry Assistant, Emily Bishop. Emily is from Fairfax, Virginia, and she recently graduated from James Madison University with a degree in Communication Studies, concentrating in Public Relations, and a minor in Writing. Emily fell in love with working in camp ministry when she worked as a cabin leader back in Virginia. Emily’s favorite thing about camp is watching both campers and staff form relationships with their peers, each other, and of course God. Other than camp, Emily loves reading, writing, baking, watching Netflix, and she is also a huge hockey fan (Go Rangers!). We are extremely excited to have her with us and look forward to the amazing things she will bring to our camp!

PAUL DEGNER

OPERATION/FACILITIES MANAGER Paul joined the team at Lutherdale in June of 2018. Before coming to us, Paul worked for the Elkhorn Area School District as the Head Custodian for over 6 years, and previous to that he owned his own construction company. Paul and his wife, Deb, are members at Sugar Creek Lutheran Church in Elkhorn, where he leads confirmation classes. Paul’s children, Megan, Kadie, Kylie, and Jaden have all been campers at Lutherdale for many years. After a whirlwind summer, Paul says that what he enjoys most about his job at Lutherdale are the people, both the people he gets to work with and the guests he meets. He loves the variety of tasks and projects that keep the job new and exciting. Most of all, he loves to serve at a place with a strong sense of mission. If you are interested in volunteering or putting together a work group to help with a project around camp, please contact Paul at paul@lutherdale.org.

FAITH FORMATION & EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMMING FOR THE 3 RD CHAPTER OF LIFE

50 FORWARD TRAVEL TRIPS FIRST INTERNATIONAL TRIP SAN ANTONIO MEMORIES On September 24, 32 people boarded the overnight flight from Chicago to Dublin, Ireland. We arrived in time for a wonderful traditional Irish breakfast with plenty of coffee to go around! For the next 8 days we explored the southern region of Ireland, heading for Galway on the western coast before heading back to Dublin. The weather was absolutely perfect for us with moderate temperatures and sunshine. Only one day had some of the misty weather that Ireland is known for. We visited many interesting sites including: castles, seaside towns, a woolen mill, whiskey and beer producers, ancient monastic communities, churches, and museums. The scenery was incredibly beautiful and layered in shades of green. Ireland is a land of pastures, mountains, ocean shores, small towns, and friendly people. It was an excellent trip for our first trip overseas.

David Box, the Associate Director of Lutherdale, hosted the October 6th trip to his home state of Texas. He was excited to share information and show our travelers the sites and culture of San Antonio. The city has so much to offer and everyone enjoyed seeing the San Fernando Cathedral and tour of the city. It was fun to take an evening cruise on the Riverwalk. There was lots of history to tell at the Alamo and the National Museum of the Pacific War. One day we took a tour of the LBJ Ranch, also known as the Texas White House. We learned that many Germans had settled in Texas and helped to make it the proud state it is. We visited the beautiful town of Fredericksburg, known as the Jewel of the Texas Hill Country. A great time was had by all. One traveler commented,“David treated us great and called us all friends. By the end of the trip I felt like he knew each of us. He is very personable and is an excellent tour host. I would have to give him 5 Stars! FALL 2018 | 262-742-2352 | www.lutherdale.org

GARDEN NEWS Last Spring, Lutherdale’s garden program was taken over by Heather Seeley. You may remember Heather as the wonderful Assistant Food Service Manager who does all of the fantastic baking here at camp. She has now added Garden Manager to her title and is doing a great job planting, tending, and growing all kinds of goodies. The Lutherdale garden had an amazing year. We started in March with our garden face lift. Pastor Richard Inglet and some great volunteers from Sugar Creek Lutheran Church were extremely helpful this year with our garden kick-off. On two separate occasions they came to camp to erect the hoop house, mulch, and plant vegetables in the garden. We also had people generously give financial donations and had Thrivent Action Teams help us to purchase a variety of delicious vegetables, replace worn-out tools, take care of the fruit planted in the garden and around camp, and replace canning supplies. We are even more excited about the year to come. The goal for the garden is for it to produce enough product to eventually sustain camp in a variety of ways throughout the entire year. This means only

HONEY HARVEST

SEPTEMBER 18, 2019 COST: $30 PER PERSON In 2011, Lutherdale placed honey bee hives around camp, and since then they have been very busy helping the trees, flowers, and the plants in our garden grow. Each summer campers enjoy visiting the bees and learning more about them and how they make honey. In September, we harvest the honey to use in our kitchen and sell to guests. We invite you to learn about the honey-making process from our expert bee keepers, Jeff Bluhm and Mike Seeley. Help spin the honey out of the frames and bottle it. Enjoy a lunch of Chicken and Biscuits with honey. A free jar of honey is included. Additional jars will be available for sale. Full payment due upon registration.

using homemade sauces, having our own supply of frozen vegetable mix, and only using fresh jams and applesauce in the Lutherdale kitchen. We would like for our salad bar to contain even more items that have been grown right in our garden. Even our bees received a new home in the garden this year. They were very busy all spring and summer. The garden was greatly blessed by these little workers. Our plants produced 100 fold thanks to the bees. We truly appreciate all those who have been able to help. So, please remember the garden at Lutherdale when you are able to give of your time, talents, and treasures. Lutherdale is always growing and moving forward. We still have much to accomplish with our garden program, and plans are already in the works for next year.

GROUNDBREAKING NEWS! September 15th was a great day to celebrate the future lodge and conference center. A groundbreaking service was held with over 80 people in attendance on the beautiful warm and sunny day. Of course we had a gold painted shovel for the occasion. A number of people took turns putting the spade in the ground. Following the service, guests were asked to come sit on a log and have their picture taken to commemorate the day. With that, the work has begun. The hillside is being prepared for construction of the foundation. The goal is to have the whole foundation completed before the end of the year so that it can

sleep through the winter. As winter passes, the excitement will rise in anticipation of the arrival of the bedroom wings in May. The Mission Builders will return in the spring to complete the lodge and conference center.

HELLO, SARA

Jesse Weiss, who began as Capital Campaign Manager in September 2016, left Lutherdale at the end of August. He has accepted a new position as Executive Director of Camp Amnicon, near Superior, WI. He had this to say about his time at Lutherdale:

Sara Jonasen will be stepping into the Capital Campaign Manager role in October. She brings with her a passion for outdoor ministry developed through many experiences working in year-round camp positions. Here is more about Sara:

“Lutherdale is a tremendous ministry that is deeply loved and supported by many faithful and generous people. I am so thankful to have had the opportunity to be a part of all the great things going on and to get to know so many great people. I’m sad to not be able to see the campaign all the way through to the end, but I know that the many great supporters of Lutherdale will come together to make all our goals a reality. “

A native of Wisconsin, Sara has an M.S. in Recreation Administration and has served Lutheran Outdoor Ministries for over a decade. Her experiences include serving as Program Director at Crossways Pine Lake, Site Director at Crossways Waypost, Food Service & Housekeeping Director at Camp EWALU, and Interim Camp Director at Fortune Lake Lutheran Camp. She lives in Oconomowoc with her husband Aaron, their lively toddler Cecilia, and unamused dog named Bella.

BUILDING PROGRESS Work is officially underway on the building site for Lutherdale Lodge! Staff and volunteers have been busy clearing trees and other obstructions so crews could begin their work. The first project was rerouting the gas and electric lines running through the location where the foundation will be placed. The electric transformers that sit in between the dining hall and the entrance of the new lodge were also relocated to make room for a new turn-around and handicapped parking spaces. Excavation for the foundation began in mid October and work will be completed before the end of the year. The foundation will be ready for the structure to be constructed beginning in early June of 2019. Mission Builders will be here to oversee the building of the lodge. In consultation with our architect and Mission Builders, we have made some adjustments to our building process. The decision was made to use modular building for the bedroom wings of

the lodge. This means the lodge bedrooms will be custom built in a factory in Stratford, WI. They will be trucked down to camp, placed on the foundation with a crane, and then tied together. When they arrive, they will be almost completely finished on the inside. This method offers both a large cost and time savings thanks to the efficiency of the process. We have toured hotels in Wisconsin built modularly by the same company and were satisfied with the high quality of work. Mission Builders, working alongside Lutherdale volunteers, will be responsible for the siding, roof, and building the center Lobby/Meeting Room section. Work will take place throughout next summer into the fall. The more volunteers we have to work alongside Mission Builders, the sooner Lutherdale Lodge will be ready for guests! Please consider volunteering or recruiting some people from your congregation to work alongside with Mission Builders.

YOU COULD BE LES OR JEANNE Every so often, it’s good to meet yourself—your best self—in someone else. One of this past summer’s Mission Builders is that kind of person, a guy who might be just enough like you to make you want to do what he does, to be who he is. Your new self, your best self. Your Les Sitz self! Les and his wife Jeanne are Mission Builders—a fascinating crew of volunteer construction workers who go around the country giving shape to church buildings, and most recently to camps like Lutherdale. This past spring and summer, a small group of Mission Builders—with some local volunteers—constructed a new home for Lutherdale staff. In record time, they turned a piece of property adjacent to the camp into a framed, ready-to-finish three-bedroom house. As of late September builders were finishing up trim and door installation. Later this fall, a staff family will have a comfortable new home from which to maintain their ministries at Lutherdale.

Try this out: Could you see yourself finding something new-and-important as your lifework? Could you imagine yourself as part of a family of skilled workers, some of them learning as they go, and skilled family members who are providing support and strength for the construction workers? And could you hear the quiet voice of God in the lives of people like Les and Jeanne, tugging at your soul? If so, you might want to consider being part of Mission Builders’ work this coming Spring and Summer. Fulltime, part-time, or volunteer; highly skilled, semi-skilled, or ready/willing to learn—all of it rewarding. If you’re thinking that there might be a Les or Jeanne inside of you, consider this good news: Mission Builders will return to Lutherdale this next Spring! The 2019 project is extremely exciting: The construction of our new Lodge. (This large-scale project is moving forward because our Capital Campaign is now coming to the conclusion of its $2.9 million first phase.)

NEW AT LUTHERDALE When you walk around the campus at Lutherdale, you will see many new additions, updates, and renovations aside from the construction beginning on the Lutherdale Lodge. Thanks to generous gifts from friends of the camp, these new features will be enjoyed by camp visitors for years to come. On the West side of the chapel, facing the lake and the worship area known as “God Is Here,” we have created a beautiful seating area. The Groen/Stanfield Memorial Patio will be a wonderful place for guests to sit, reflect, and take in the relaxing views. Inga Olsen Groen lived in a house on Lauderdale Lakes back when Lutherdale first started and was very passionate about Lutherdale’s growth and development. Near the existing Bell Tower Plaza, landscaping was added in honor of Bob and Mary Ann Woodard. Mary Ann served on the Board of Directors and their children and grandchildren attended camp for many years. More landscaping was done and a retaining wall was added to the tobogganing hill near the office thanks to 15 football players from Elkhorn Area High School. Each year the football team volunteers at different places in the community, and this year Lutherdale was blessed to have them here. Lutherdale continues to be blessed by so many people who care deeply for the ministry, and we are very thankful for all of these new additions to the grounds.

NEW REFRIGERATOR This summer one of our faithful kitchen partners broke down. The double door reach-in cooler that gave us over 30 years of quality service could no longer stay cold. It was time to be replaced. A plea went out for help! A big “THANK YOU!” to Christine Parmley, Mark & Janet Fisher, Janelle Bols, Janet Kehe, Diane Kane, and Jane Kunzi-Brunner for your generous gifts toward the new cooler. The cooler has been named…. Rebecca. The kitchen was remodeled in the 1980’s. Some equipment has been replaced over time and more will need to be done in the near future. Of big concern is the external walk-in cooler and freezer that is approaching the end of its life cycle. The kitchen also lacks air conditioning for the hot and busy summer months. Plans are being worked on to upgrade the kitchen, where needed to continue our excellent food service program that meets the needs of all our guests and participants year-round.
