Adoption Highlight: Harlow’s Story Meet Harlow, a beautiful Persian mix with a sassy side and a heart of gold. Harlow was a frequent flyer here at The Humane Society of Southern Wisconsin for quite some time. She originally showed up as a stray back in November of 2017. She had a microchip, but her owners did not reclaim her. Despite her long, gorgeous fur, and big twinkling eyes, Harlow stayed with us for almost two months before she found what we thought was her forever home. Exactly one year after the day she was originally brought to us, Harlow showed up again as a stray. We

In March of 2019, Harlow finally found her true forever home and her and her new family could not be happier. for a second time. A month later, she was adopted to another family. This family loved her, but ultimately Harlow and their cat just did not get along and Harlow had to be returned to the shelter. Yet again, Harlow was placed up for adoption. Message from Executive Director Greetings from the Humane Society of Southern Wisconsin: Much has been happening this year at the Humane Society of Southern Wisconsin. We have hired 2 veterinarians, and have assisted more animals than last year to date. As of the end of May we have adopted 736 animals, 284 dogs and 451 cats. We will be restarting our vaccination clinics this summer and hope to run these every other month through the end of the year. As you are well aware we are in the midst of our Capital Campaign. We have been extremely busy this year and have been able to raise substantial funds toward our goal. To bring you all up to date. The Humane Society of Southern Wisconsin has purchased 44 acres of land at 4700 South Prairie Avenue (Highway G) in the Town of Rock which will be our new home. On May 8, 2019 we celebrated our 100 Extraordinary Women initiative with more than the 100 anticipated, a great success! We also have received cash donations, and in kind donations to help us toward our goal. A special thanks goes out to Al McKnight of McKnight Excavation Services who has offered to donate his services and excavate our new site. We are in the midst of getting the needed approvals for construction and have laid out the new site. We are in negotiations with a number of other donors at this time and hope to raise the funds needed so that we can start construction. There are many naming opportunities available at the new shelter and we need your assistance in order to begin building our new shelter complete with a true veterinary area, instead of the cramped box truck where we currently do surgery. I cannot say enough about our current staff at the Humane Society. They all have stepped up and continue to provide the outstanding service that we have all come to expect. I would like to thank all of you who contribute to our cause and ask that you consider a little bit extra to help us build our new shelter. As of June 30 we need to raise approximately $1.8 Million in order to break ground, please consider a donation. You can always contact me at the shelter via email at Mmcmanus@petsgohome.org or by phone at 608-752-5622 with questions about the capital campaign, to request a presentation of our new project, or to ask any questions that you may have regarding the Humane Society of Southern Wisconsin. I would love to hear from you. As always, thank you for your continued support of our efforts to help our pets find their forever home!

Wags & Tales Summer Reading Program In June we launched a new program — Wags & Tales Summer Reading Program! Every Wednesday during the summer we invited kind children to visit the Humane Society for 45 minute sessions to read to our shelter cats and dogs. We’ve found that when our shelter pets are read to, it brings them comfort and reduces their anxiety. It also nurtures empathy in the children participating in the program, all while allowing them to practice their reading skills on a non-judgmental audience.

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT: FAITH PHALIN
If you looked up the word “dependable” in a dictionary you’d find a picture of Faith Phalin. She’s the person we can count on for anything. Have a large litter of puppies that need fostering? Call Faith! Have a few puppies that need extraspecial medical care? Call Faith! Have a scared cat that needs to learn how to be loved? Call Faith! She started fostering with us in 2010 and hasn’t looked back since then. She credits her love for animals for getting her started and her love of life-saving for keeping her going. She has fostered over 350 animals over the course of 9 years and each one has made an impact on her — and her on them — but there’s a few that stick out to her. Back in 2015, Faith took in a pregnant dog named Katie. Katie gave birth in her home to 10 puppies — all of which Faith helped raise until they were old enough to go up for adoption. Talk about a labor of love! Katie and Faith connected almost immediately, so it’s no surprise that Katie ended up a permanent member of Faith’s family. Funny story about that — Faith actually brought Katie back to the shelter so that she could go up for adoption and find her forever family, but as soon as Faith got home, she realized that her family was Katie’s forever family. In 2017, Stubby arrived after a long plane ride from South Korea. Stubby took quite a bit longer than his other travelers to settle in here, so we called Faith. She took Stubby in and worked with him tirelessly over the course of a few months. While Faith was working with Stubby, we had a litter of puppies that needed Faith’s extra special medical attention, so she brought Stubby back to us and the staff continued to work with him at the
shelter. Ultimately, when all the pups were healed and ready to go to their forever homes, Faith took Stubby back in — but this time forever. Stubby is still learning how to be a dog each day and always keeps Faith guessing, but he’s a part of her family.
Katie and Faith connected almost immediately, so it’s no surprise that Katie ended up a permanent member of Faith’s family. But Faith doesn’t only foster dogs — she’s saved countless feline lives too. Take Honeybunch for example. Honeybunch came to the shelter with very little understanding of how to be a housecat. Our faithful Faith took her in and worked with her for over a year. Honeybunch had an extra special bond with Katie — Faith’s first “foster fail.” Which only made it harder on everyone when Honeybunch came back to the shelter to go up for adoption. To ease the transition, Faith would bring Katie into the shelter to bring some comfort to Honeybunch. Ultimately, everyone got exactly what they needed when Honeybunch got adopted by a family with a dog that looked just like Katie. I don’t know where we’d all be without Faith, but one thing is for sure — we wouldn’t be the same shelter we are today without her. We owe her quite a bit for all of the lives she’s saved over the years, but for now we’ll start with THANK YOU! SUMMER 2019
