SEVERE WEATHER SAFETY
BE PREPARED Discuss safety plans ahead of time. Have a flashlight with extra batteries and a first aid kit. At your site, note any tree limbs that could fall from strong winds. Secure gear, including tents. Know the location of campground buildings and the campground host site. Be sure children know the family campsite number.
STAY TUNED AND ALERT Keep an eye on the sky. If severe weather approaches, tune to local radio stations (listed on page 2). Campground hosts have weather radios. Static may indicate nearby lightning. Remember, a warning means a severe thunderstorm or tornado has been sighted. A watch means conditions are favorable for severe weather. Share information with your neighbors. THUNDERSTORM TIPS If you are boating or swimming, get to land and take shelter immediately. If you can hear thunder, the storm is close enough for you to be struck by lightning. If you are in the woods, take shelter under the shortest trees, away from power lines. Squat low to the ground; do not lay down. Avoid areas that may flood. TORNADO TIPS If a tornado approaches while you are outdoors, find a low spot or embankment which might shelter you from wind and blowing debris. Stay low. SEEK SHELTER There are no approved storm-proof buildings in Peninsula State Park.

Welcome!
On behalf of the park staff I would like to welcome you to Peninsula State Park, Wisconsin’s most complete park and a favorite camping destination. Peninsula draws over a million visitors annually and is one of the many jewels of Door County. With 468 campsites, three group campsites, a nature center, lighthouse, outdoor theater, golf course, swimming beach, biking and hiking trails, 150-foot bluffs, and eight miles of Lake Michigan shoreline you’ll find diverse recreation. Please be sure to check out an amazing sunset from Weborg Point or Sven’s Bluff, my personal favorites. This year you may notice dying or dead ash trees scattered throughout Peninsula State Park. The invasive Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) was first found here in 2014 and now we are seeing increasing impacts from the insect. Woodpecker damage is frequently visible on infested trees and created as the birds search for EAB larvae. Although it can be good source of food for woodpeckers and other bird species, these trees can ultimately become a safety hazard in areas of high use by visitors. Due to these concerns you may see selected trees removed for visitor safety. In areas where there is large number of ash trees, we are seeking large-scale tree removal if there is a potential hazard. Priority-areas could include campgrounds, Shore Road and Sunset Bike Route. Many of the park’s ash trees are not a safety hazard and will be left standing, to offer many benefits to wildlife. Firewood can spread insects and diseases like EAB, gypsy moth and oak wilt. Thank you for helping protect your favorite parks by purchasing local firewood or WDATCP-certified firewood. To help prevent pest spread diseases, please don’t move firewood. Thank you for supporting Peninsula’s partners including Friends of Peninsula State Park. The Friends hard work and dedication, along with their amazing fundraising efforts, have helped advance projects including Eagle Tower and the Nature Center addition. For more information visit PeninsulaFriends.org. I hope you enjoy your time with family and friends discovering all the Peninsula has to offer! It’s where memories are made! CAMPFIRES
PERMITS REQUIRED
Fires must be small and carefully tended in designated campground and public fire rings. Never move the fire ring. Be cautious of wind direction, sparks and scorching trees. Watch children carefully. Never burn painted or treated wood, plastics or trash. Campers may gather wood for use in the park, but it must be both dead and on the ground. Never cut limbs or remove any part of a standing tree, alive or dead. Make sure a fire is completely extinguished before leaving. Woodyard Located on Bluff Road near Nature Center. May be closed in inclement weather. Private concessionaire.
Collecting and Foraging Ask a ranger first! Plants and animals on state land are protected. If legal, foraging can only be for personal (not commercial) use.
Woodyard Hours *May be closed in inclement weather.
• 5-7 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, May 3 & 4, 10 & 11, 17 & 18. • 4-7 p.m. daily (4-8 p.m. Fridays) Thursday, May 23-Saturday, August 31. • 4-6 p.m. daily Sunday, September 1-Saturday, October 19. • Off-season hours posted at the Woodyard and Park Headquarters.
FLYING RELATED ACTIVITIES Including but not limited to hang-gliding, sky diving, flying model airplanes and operating drones are not permitted in the park.
PETS Pets must be on a leash not longer than eight feet and under control at all times. Pets must not interfere with the enjoyment of the park by others. Pets are not allowed in buildings, picnic areas, Nicolet Beach, or on nature trails. Owners are responsible for cleaning up after their pets. Pets may not be left unattended at any time. Pets are allowed at The Pines picnic area.
PICNICKING The carry-in, carry-out policy of Wisconsin State Parks requires day-use visitors to remove their own trash and recyclables. Peninsula does not provide waste or recycling containers for picnickers. Please restrict fires to charcoal grills or designated fire rings. If you bring your own grill, dispose of hot coals in the nearest picnic grill. Extinguish all fires before leaving. Do not feed wild animals, including gulls. Biologists have linked high gull populations to increased levels of E.coli bacteria in local waters.

Playgrounds are at Nicolet Beach, Tennison Bay Campground and the Fish Creek picnic area.
Commercial Use Any person collecting funds for a business or providing services for a fee which involves that person’s physical presence in the park is required to first obtain a commercial use permit. dnr.wi.gov/ topic/parks/rules/commercialuse. Metal Detectors may be used on DNR land or waters only for locating specific lost personal items. A permit is required. dnr.wi.gov/topic/ parks/rules/metaldetect.
RELIGIOUS SERVICES Local church service schedules are available at Park Headquarters. Non-denominational services are held at the amphitheater at 11 a.m. Sunday, late June through Labor Day.
ROAD SAFETY Posted speed limits must be followed. All users must share the roads. Watch for motor vehicles, bicycles, in-line skates, pedestrians, and children. For your safety, in-line skates are not allowed on Shore and Bluff Roads. All motor vehicles and play devices (scooters, skateboards, etc.) are prohibited on sidewalks and walkways. Play devices are prohibited on all park roadways.
TRAIL SAFETY Trails (page 14-15) vary in difficulty. Trails may become slippery when wet. Use caution on steep climbs and descents, as well as near unprotected bluffs. Stay behind barriers. Watch children closely.
WATER SAFETY Swimming Swim only at a designated beach. Nicolet Beach is open 6 a.m. – 11 p.m. daily. No lifeguard on duty. Food, glass containers, beverages, soap and detergent and dogs are prohibited on the sand beach. Do not swim alone, at night, or in unfamiliar places. Never dive into water of unknown depth. Watch children closely when near water. Use caution when wading in unknown waters as water depth may change abruptly. Green Bay and Lake Michigan can be dangerously cold. Swimmers should be extremely cautious of areas where the current appears to flow away from the shore. If caught in an outflowing current, swim across rather than against the current as the flow is usually rather narrow. The WI DNR does not monitor ice conditions. Exercise extreme caution. Ice may not be thick enough to support a person. Underwater currents, springs and animals may cause thin ice.

Life is like riding a bicycle, to stay balanced you must keep moving. Commit to be fit by pedaling Sunset Bike Route, the best choice for adults with children. Off-road bike trails offer rugged conditions and require a trail pass for cyclists age 16 and older. In winter, fat bikes are allowed on park roads but prohibited on all ski and hiking trails. Although fat bikes are permitted on winter snowmobile trails, they are discouraged for safety reasons when snowmobile trails are open. See page 5 for more Road Safety rules. See the map on pages 14-15 for routes.

Lone Pine Trail (D-E) 0.5 mile, one way. Moderate. This trail connects to several convenient loops. Ascend a dolostone bluff then hike a forest dominated by beech, maple and oak trees. Can you spot the solitary white pine, the trail’s namesake, now lying on the forest floor? Access at the southeast corner of South Nicolet Campground.
Hidden Bluff Trail (B-C) 0.75 mile, one way. Moderate. This spur of Sunset Bike Route is accessed at The Nature Center. Look for red tinged bulblet fern cascading down rocky outcroppings. Jack-in-thepulpit flowers are prolific.
Hemlock Trail (A-B) 1.8 miles, one-way. Moderate. Lake iris greets hikers at the edge of a cedar-hemlock forest. Skirt up a low bluff and catch glimpses of the Strawberry Islands through birch and pine trees. Access near Weborg Campground or Tennison Bay Campground.
Eagle Trail 2 mile loop. Difficult. Remarkable 150-foot cliffs, springs, and forested terraces make Eagle Trail memorable. Several steep, rocky sections offset a level segment that parallels Eagle Harbor. Trilliums and thimbleberry brighten the trailside, as does less common cranberry vibernum. Access at Eagle Terrace or Eagle Panorama.
Skyline Trail 3 mile loop. Moderate. Climb to Sven’s Bluff through rolling terrain. Watch for stone fences and open meadows, remnants of long ago farms. Hikers can connect to other trails via Skyline. Access at Skyline parking lot on Shore Road.
Sentinel Trail 2 mile loop. Easy. Walk past stands of maple, beech and red pine. Trail signs interpret forest ecology A .6 mile section is graveled to facilitate mobility.
Nicolet Bay Trail (G-H) 2.2 miles, one way. Moderate. Watch for wild turkeys and pileated woodpeckers in a forest of basswood, white ash and hemlock trees. This trail passes within a quarter mile of Nicolet Beach with convenient access gained from the amphitheater parking lot or Welcker’s Campground.
Off-Road Bike Trails 12 miles, various loops. Moderate - Difficult. Take on the challenge of rugged, unsurfaced terrain. A trail pass, available at Park Headquarters, is required for bicyclists age 16 and older. Access at off-road parking lot on Highland Road or near the south terminus of Sunset Trail.
Minnehaha Trail (D-F) 0.7 mile, one way. Easy. This refreshing lakeshore trail links Nicolet South Campground and Eagle Trail. Access near campsite 844.
White Cedar Nature Trail 0.5 mile loop. Easy. Signs interpret deer ecology along an abandoned 5,000-year-old shoreline. Access at Nature Center.
Vita Course 1 mile loop. Eleven exercise stations wind through beautiful forest scenery. Stations develop strength, stamina and coordination for different ability levels. Access at the southwest corner of the amphitheater parking lot.
Trail Tramper’s Delight (K-L) 0.5 mile, one way. Easy. This trail name originated in the early 1920s when hikers walked from Nicolet Bay to Eagle Bluff Lighthouse. In the hot summer, the shaded path provided a cool walk, which was a trail tramper’s delight. Access near Eagle Bluff Lighthouse.
Sunset Bike Route (I-J-I) 10 miles. Moderate. The hard packed limestone base of the 5.1 mile route accomodates bicycles, wheelchairs and hikers. Traverse every major type of landscape including marshes, upland hardwoods and conifer stands. Connect to a return route at Nicolet Beach, pedaling four additional miles along Peninsula’s scenic back roads to Park Headquarters at the Fish Creek entrance. Be cautious of one steep descent on Middle Road.
TRAIL GUIDE • See safety messages on page four and five. Letters denote trail segments on map.
NEW! All features (roads, trails, shoreline) on the 2018 Peninsula State Park Summer Map reflect GPS coordinates. Mountain Bike Trails also now include mileage. Features on official park maps such as trails, roads, picnic areas and campgrounds depict “designated use areas” per 23.115 of Wis. statutes. Please limit your activities to these areas.

Thousands of people visit the Nature Center at Peninsula for educational programs and guided hikes that reveal an amazing diversity of plants, birds, and wildlife. However, the potential of these and other programs is limited because the 80-year-old building has no indoor restrooms or meeting space and lacks storage. The Friends of Peninsula State Park have plans developed for an addition to remedy these issues. Generous donors have already contributed $320,000 of the $360,000 needed for construction.
Help us break ground this fall and open a new and improved facility to visitors in 2020. Please make a gift today online or by mail. For more information, go to PeninsulaFriends.org and select Nature Center Addition from the top menu.

WHAT’S THE BUZZ
on Like to Hike?
This year’s Like to Hike (L2H) pin, only available at Peninsula State Park, features the rusty patched bumble bee, a federally endangered species. Pesticides, abnormally high concentrations of parasites and fungi, and habitat loss have decreased bee populations, causing grave concern. One of every three bites of food eaten worldwide depends on pollinators, especially bees. Peninsula is giving bees (and other pollinators) a chance by maintaining a native plant garden at the Nature Center. The garden, with wide mowed paths and clear site lines for adults watching children, is a popular park destination. Pins (Friends merchandise) are available for $6. Those who complete five or more silent sport activities listed in the L2H log can purchase a pin for just $3. Logs are available at Park Headquarters and the Nature Center or can be downloaded it at either peninsulafriends.org or wiparks.net. Visit WI DNR Bumble Bee Brigade (wiatri.net/ inventory/BBB/) for more information.

More Than a Nature Center The best thing about memories is making them. Peninsula’s cozy center, once a winter warming house, is the heart of family adventures today. It’s centrally located on Bluff Road, near the Woodyard.

Move Your Body Plogging Swedes started the worldwide fitness craze: picking up litter while jogging. They call it “plocka upp” (pick up). At Peninsula, kids receive free eco charms for bringing 50 pieces of trash to the Nature Center. Plogging stickers are awarded to older participants, while supplies last.

See geocaching. com for coordinates of all park geocaches.
PENINSULA ACTS TO MANAGE EMERALD ASH BORER As populations of invasive EAB beetles rise, people will notice ash decline. In high use areas, infested trees can be a safety hazard. Over the past three years, Peninsula has removed hundreds of ash from campgrounds and roadsides and will continue to do so. However, many trees will not be cut since they benefit Peninsula’s ecosystem and pose no safety hazard. Peninsula is also working to increase non-ash forest cover.
Healthy woods are good for people and wildlife. Peninsula’s forests cover 80% of park land and include 500-year-old cedar trees, two dozen tree plantations, and hardwood swamps. Over the next decade, the loss of ash from Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) will change forest composition. How will this effect woodland species? Black ash swamps could change over to wet meadows with highbush cranberry and alder – but perhaps more invasive honeysuckle, too. Flycatcher birds may find abundant berries attractive – but pine grosbeaks will have to search for a substitute for the ash seeds they favor. Wood ducks may nest in cavities of standing, dead, and hollow ash – but will need to look Pine Grosbeak. Photo by Len Villano. elsewhere when snag trees fully decompose. In upland woods, downed white ash could provide moist habitat for salamanders – but invasive garlic mustard might also stake a claim in the new, sunny openings. Peninsula’s existing species diversity, a strength, may ease change.
Park staff also released three species of non-native, natural enemy wasps for the first time in 2018. (The wasps were first released in Wisconsin in 2011.) Release of these biological agents began in Michigan in 2007 under the guidance of the US Department of Agriculture. They attack EAB eggs and larvae. Peninsula is also home to a native wasp (Cerceris fumipennis) that catches EAB adults and other beetles to feed its offspring. The Nature Center’s overflow parking lot is one site where forest entomologists documented the species. Want to know more? The Peninsula State Park Ecology Sampler, published in 2010 and for sale at Park Headquarters and the Nature Center, features articles about EAB, Beech Bark Disease, and other forest issues. All proceeds support Peninsula’s educational program. (Top photo) A larval/pupal cluster of non-native Tetrastichus wasps (red circle) has developed by eating an EAB larva. Photo by Bill McNee, DNR.
