We are inviting new and past campers to kick off the summer season in a BIG way at our Open House! Meet the 2018 Summer Staff, take a tour of the camp, enjoy the waterfront and slip n slide, play Ga Ga Ball, rock the Climbing Wall, see the farm animals and check out the camp store. There is no charge for the event, so bring your friends and family out and have a great time at Lutherdale.
There is a quote that has been attributed to Martin Luther that says, “Even if I knew that the world would go to pieces tomorrow, I would still plant an apple tree today.” This quote brings to mind a sense of higher calling and living a purposeful life, regardless of what the future might hold. At camp, we often find ourselves planting seeds without ever knowing what the harvest will be. We can in good faith know that the seeds of faith that are planted during the Bible studies, the seeds of perseverance planted at the high ropes course or the seeds of community planted around the campfire will grow and multiply because we are the harvest of seeds planted generations ago. Lutherdale was started in 1944, when a few pastors walked around a piece of land that was too hilly
and rocky for farming, and they decided it would be a good place to plant some seeds. Last year, 13,000 people came out to Lutherdale to enjoy the grounds, participate in programs and hear the good news about Jesus because of those seeds that were planted over 70 years ago.
We continue to plant at Lutherdale, both figuratively and literally. This past year there were three separate tree projects that took root at Lutherdale during the 500th Year of Commemoration of the Reformation. In April, the camp purchased 100 saplings: 25 oak, 25 maple, 25 fir and 25 spruce. They were planted in an on-site nursery for future transplantation on the grounds. In May, the ELCA Greater Milwaukee Synod provided 15 burr oaks. Those
have been planted on the northern lot line of the campus.
From February through August, the Reformation Tree Project collected $10,000. These funds helped purchase 90 spruce which were planted along the East lot line on US Hwy 12 in September. Then in October, 14 hardwoods (elm, maple & linden) were planted at various locations on the campus where trees had been removed. Like the inspiring wisdom found in this old Chinese proverb says: “The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is now.” At Lutherdale we are thankful for those who did the planting throughout the years, and we are honored to be part of the planting that is taking place right now.

SUMMER BIBLE STUDY THEME “THIS CHANGES EVERYTHING”
If that sounds familiar, that is because this curriculum has the same title as the theme for the 2018 ELCA Youth Gathering. It has been written in collaboration with the gathering team. The lessons are not the same but complement those that will be used for the gathering. As people, we are born into a broken world. God’s desire for wholeness and life for us and the rest of creation was made known to us in the life and death of Jesus. This action by God through Christ literally changes everything – the world, us and how we live in community with one another. Through this curriculum, campers will learn how God’s grace changes these things and how we can work with others to show that grace to the world. The daily themes include Our Hearts (Luke 24:13–35, the walk to Emmaus), Our Identity (Acts 9:1–18, the conversion of Saul), Our Purpose (Matthew 25:31–46, the parable of the king, the sheep and the goats), Our Community (Matthew 15:21–28, the Canaanite woman) and Our Perspective (Luke 15:11–32, the parable of the prodigal father and the wayward son).

S.A.L.T. SERVICE AND LEADERSHIP TRAINING
FOR CURRENT 11TH & 12TH GRADERS We are excited to refresh and launch a new leadership program for current 11th and 12th graders for the 2018 summer! This 2-week commitment is a great opportunity for students to learn some behindthe-scenes training of what it means to serve on a summer camp staff. Each week the students will live with
a cabin group and serve alongside that cabin leader as a role model and assistant to the life of the cabin. We will help the S.A.L.T. participants build leadership skills, learn about working with children, boost their self-confidence and grow in their faith while living in an intentional Christian community.
Our goal is that S.A.L.T. participants will depart from camp as stronger, faithful leaders as they go back to their homes, schools, churches, and communities.

FAREWELL ROBERT Throughout the life of an outdoor ministry setting, people are constantly coming in and out of this place. Campers and retreat guests, donors and summer staff, volunteers and year-round staff. At the end of March, our Operations/Facilities Manager, Robert Couden, will be stepping away from Lutherdale to pursue other endeavors. Robert has worked at Lutherdale since September of 2014. The improvements to the site and the care that he gave to all of the facilities at Lutherdale were immediately noticed as soon as anyone set foot on the grounds. More than just the work being done, Robert’s smile and infectious personality will be missed around this place. A Search Committee is looking to fill the position of Operation/ Facilities Manager. Interested parties should send a résumé and cover letter to jeff@lutherdale.org. SPRING 2018 | 262-742-2352 | www.lutherdale.org

SPRING 2018
KELLOGG FAMILY FOUNDATION GIFT
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED THIS SUMMER
YOU CAN HELP US BUILD!
Lutherdale is partnering with ELCA Mission Builders on building projects at camp during the summers of 2018 and 2019. This coming summer, we will be building a new year-round staff residence. In order to help make these projects successful and to help lower costs, volunteers are needed daily to work alongside and support the Mission Builders. Volunteers of all skill levels and abilities are needed, from experienced builders to jobsite rookies—there is a meaningful job for you. Come alone or bring a group. Come once or come weekly. Volunteers will not only help build new buildings at Lutherdale, they also have the opportunity to build new skills and a satisfaction for accomplishing something together. Don’t want to volunteer on the jobsite? Consider volunteering to host a snack or meal for the Mission Builders or to host them at your congregation for Sunday worship. For more info on volunteering, contact Jesse Weiss, Campaign Manager, at jesse@lutherdale.org or complete and return the interest form below.
Lutherdale has been blessed by the receipt of a $300,000 gift from the Kellogg Family Foundation towards the Share the Adventure Campaign. The Kellogg Family Foundation is a generous supporter of many church-related causes, as well as organizations that provide development opportunities for youth. We are grateful for the importance that the Kellogg family places on these important areas and that they believe in the work that God does through Lutherdale to further the church and the lives of youth, families and adults. Please join us in prayers of thanksgiving for this wonderful gift.
A part of the continued success of our campaign can be attributed to Lutherdale’s wonderful Quilt and Women’s groups. Led by Darlene Pieper, chair of the Quilt and Women’s Groups Campaign Committee, we have kicked off an appeal to invite these valuable supporters of this ministry to participate in the campaign. Thus far, we have received over $50,000 towards a $100,000 goal for this special appeal. We are extremely thankful for the many ways our quilters and women’s groups have supported Lutherdale over the years, as well as for their significant investment in the next generation of God’s ministry through Lutherdale. If your Quilt or Women’s Group is interested in supporting the campaign, please contact Jesse Weiss, Campaign Manager, at jesse@lutherdale.org.

PEOPLE WHO NEED PEOPLE Remember years ago that Top 10 song by Barbra Streisand, “People who need people are the luckiest people in the world?” Sure, go ahead and hum along while you read this article! Recent studies indicate that the lyrics should now go like this… ”People, especially older adults, who need people are the healthiest people in the world!” Gerontologists galore and others serving with older adults report that older adults who continue to be surrounded and connected with family, friends, and their congregation and community are happier, healthier, and live longer than others. In other words, these people are joyfully aging, with grace in the Lord, through their social connections and relationships. Good, affirming relationships keep us happier and healthier as we spend time with people of all ages! Especially in today’s society, with 20% of adults claiming that they are lonely, “lonely” is toxic! It hampers graceful living, increases deaths, hastens memory loss, and drains the “joyful” out of living. As someone recently stated, “Lonely is the new smoking.”

This is probably no big surprise to any of us, but it should nudge and make us more sensitive and aware of how important it is to intentionally enable the older and the younger to “rub ministry shoulders” with each other on a daily basis, through families, congregations, communities, and places like Lutherdale that provide excellent ministry programs to help develop these networks of people!
BY DR. RICHARD BIMLER
Other attributes in aging joyfully in the Lord can be summarized by the word GREAT:
G R
ENEROSITY – Older adults who share their gifts of
time, wisdom, experiences, and finances are more joyful.
ELATIONSHIPS – Older adults who continue to
spend time with the younger and the older are both blessed by these connections as well as being blessings to those they touch.
E
NCOUR AGE MENT – Older adults who share
words and actions to praise, affirm, and lift people up tend to be more encourAGED themselves in the process.
A
CCEPTANCE – Older adults who understand and
accept their current limitations, who understand that their role has changed from being “do-ers” to “be-ers,” tend to be more grace-filled and joy-filled servants of the Lord.
T
HANKS – Older adults who live and share an “attitude
of gratitude” tend to see each day as a blessing to celebrate rather than a burden to bear and are instrumental in modeling a thankful and forgiving heart to those around them. So, people of God, younger and older, continue celebrating in GREAT ways, as you joyfully and gracefully age in the Lord, sharing your Generosity, Relationships, EncourAGEment, Acceptance, and in giving Thanks to the Lord, as we all continue to celebrate God’s gift of aging!
