HOW TO EASE YOUR KID’S TRANSITION TO A NEW SCHOOL Being the new kid in school can be a tall order for youngsters. Children who change schools may face a host of challenges that studies suggest can affect both their social and academic development. In a 2010 study that followed students who entered kindergarten in 1998 through 2007, the Government Accountability Office found that 13 percent of students changed schools four or more times by the end of eighth grade. Such mobility can adversely affect students, as a study of 13,000 students in the city of Chicago found that children who had changed schools four or more times by the sixth grade were roughly a year behind their classmates. In addition to the toll transferring schools can take on their academic performance, students also may experience difficulty assimilating into their new schools. Though there’s no formula to make such transitions easier, parents can try various strategies to help their kids successfully adjust to new schools. Speak with children about the transition. Pathways.org, a not-for-profit organization devoted to providing free child development information to parents and health professionals, recommends parents speak with their children about transitioning to a new school. Encourage children to share what excites and worries them about the transition. The way parents discuss transitions can go a long way toward shaping how kids view the change. Stay true to your routine. Pathways also recommends parents of students who are transitioning to a new school do their best to replicate first day of school routines from years past. Some familiar traditions might help calm kids concerns about their first day in a new school. Assimilate into a new community before the school year begins. The education resource Edweek.org notes that the most common causes of students changing schools are residential moves related to parents’ jobs or financial instability. Parents on the lookout for a new job or those who may need to relocate for financial reasons may want to delay moving until the current school year has ended. Moving between school years gives families time to acclimate to their new communities. That means kids will get time to make new friends. Some familiar faces on the first day at a new school can go a long way toward alleviating the fears children may have. Volunteer at your child’s new school. Parental involvement at school can have a profound impact on children. The National Education Association notes that children whose parents are involved at school are more likely to perform academically than students whose parents are uninvolved. In addition, such students are more likely to have good attendance and exhibit stronger social skills than children whose parents do not involve themselves in their children’s school. It stands to reason that students transferring to a new school may benefit from parental involvement even more than other students, as seeing their parents approach a new school with excitement and energy may inspire children to follow suit. EXPLAINING POPULAR BEER STYLES Beer can be the perfect complement to a delicious meal or an ideal beverage when unwinding in the backyard or watching a movie at home. The explosion of the craft brewing industry, which the Brewers Association notes experienced a 5 percent growth in 2017, ensures that just about anyone can find a beer that suits his or her palate. Beers are often placed into one of two categories, ales and lagers, though the difference between beers within each category is significant. Craft beer novices or those who simply need a refresher course on their refreshments may benefit from studying up on these popular beer styles. Ales Ales are a type of beer brewed with top-fermenting yeast, which is often referred to as ale yeast. One of two types of yeast used in brewing, top-fermenting yeast is unable to ferment some sugars. Because of that, beers made with top-fermenting yeast may have a sweet flavor. Beers made with top-fermenting yeasts can tolerate high-alcohol concentrations, so ales may have a high alcohol by volume, or ABV. Stouts Stouts also are made with top fermenting yeast, placing them in the ale category, though they are not as sweet as ales. Stouts, including the popular Irish stout Guinness, tend to feature creamy heads. A dark, coffee-like character also is common in many stouts, and that can be traced to the use of un-malted roasted barley during their production. Porters Similar to stouts, porters are made with top-fermenting yeast. Porters are brewed with roasted malt, setting them apart from stouts. Porters are dark, and many are described as producing flavors of chocolate, coffee and caramel. Lagers Lagers are brewed with bottom-fermenting yeast and generally feature a lower ABV and lighter color than ales. Examples of American lagers include Budweiser and Coors, though many craft brewers also produce lagers. Dark lagers are malty and smooth, and such beers typically have a higher ABV than more traditional lagers. Craft breweries produce a variety of styles of beer, and those new to the craft beer scene should know that many craft breweries produce their own ales, stouts, porters, and lagers. When visiting a craft brewery for the first time, men and women may want to order a flight, which is a selection of the various beers brewed by a particular brewer, with each beer typically served in a four-ounce glass. Doing so allows beer drinkers to sample various beers and find the style that suits them best. (MC)

•2018 marks the 29th year of Concerts in the Park. •Prior to being at Central Park, Concerts in the Park rotated through various parks throughout Santa Clarita. •It is estimated that total attendance will surpass 48,000 attendees, an average of 6,000 per concert. •The Concerts in the Park stage takes three days to assemble. It is assembled before the first concert of the year and is left up in Central Park throughout the summer. •More than 100 bands applied to play at Concerts in the Park in 2018. •A four-person committee comprised of City staff selects which bands will play. •It takes approximately 20 staff hours to review all the bands before selecting the final eight to perform. •Staff begins setting up for each concert at 6 a.m. on Saturday morning and finishes cleanup around 11 p.m.

Families are returning to the old days of multi-generational living arrangements, and they are not just putting granny (or junior) in a spare bedroom. It is becoming very popular for people to build accessory dwelling units (also known as a granny flat) behind or beside their existing homes — and for good reason. The benefits of building a granny flat are numerous, not the least of which is providing accommodation for your extended family or for generating rental income. What is an accessory dwelling unit? It is a secondary dwelling unit on a residential property with complete independent living facilities for family members or others (also known as second units, in-law suites or granny flats). EXPLORING DENTAL CROWNS Many people visit their dentists and learn they have a tooth that requires a crown. In many instances, dental crowns are necessary for proper tooth care. Crowns were once widely referred to as caps. A crown is a permanent cover for a tooth that would otherwise require a very large filling after dental decay has been removed. Crowns also may be used to repair cracked or broken teeth so that extraction is not necessary. Sometimes crowns are used for cosmetic modifications or to hold a dental bridge in place. The crown itself can be made from different materials, like stainless steel, gold or metallic alloy, porcelain, porcelain fused to metal, and resin. A dentist will determine which material will work best depending on the application and tooth location. Understanding your appointment(s) Crowns are typically installed in two appointments. The first appointment requires prep work so the tooth can hold the crown. This is typically a painless procedure, and one in which the dentist will anesthetize the tooth and gum tissue and then file down the tooth along the chewing surface and sides to make room for the crown covering. If the tooth was decayed or insubstantial, the dentist may have to build up the tooth instead of filing it down. Again, these determinations are made by the dentist who has the expertise to gauge how much workable tooth is left. Once the tooth has been prepared, an impression will be made of the bite area. That’s because the permanent crown will be fabricated in a laboratory and the fit/color will need to be exact for comfort and also to ensure that bacteria and food debris do not get caught between the crown and tooth. The final component is a temporary cap that will keep the prepared tooth clean. This is molded in the office and will be worn only until the custom-made crown is ready. When the permanent crown is delivered, the patient will return to the office to have it checked for fit and then cemented into place. Full and partial crowns A partial crown may be used if only a portion of the tooth needs to be covered. Dentists will often rely on full crowns to get maximum coverage and strength. Cost factor Crowns can be expensive. According to the resource CostHelper, crowns can range from $500 to $3,000 depending on the material used and the patient’s insurance coverage. Dental insurance may cover a predetermined percentage of the cost when the crown is medically necessary, but insurance may not cover anything if the procedure is only cosmetic. It’s always a good idea for patients to express their concerns and ask questions about crowns prior to starting the procedure. Understanding the potential outof-pocket costs is essential as well. UNRUH SPINE CENTER “Yeah, but I really didn’t get hurt.” -The mantra behind lifelong degeneration Nearly every day we speak to a new patient who is complaining of chronic health concerns. Maybe it’s constipation, headaches, acid reflux, leg pain or numb fingers. I begin by questioning the patient about old injuries, car wrecks, falls, sports… all the usual events in life that cause physical stress on the body. Almost universally people tell me that some, if not all of these apply, but continue by saying, “Yeah, but I really didn’t get hurt.” Despite what some people may think, it is not only the major injuries (e.g., broken bones, concussions), but also the accumulation of seemingly innocuous physical events that wreak havoc on our bodies and ultimately our health later in life. Minor injuries to our spine often cause inflammation and spastic muscles that in turn prevent the spinal joints from moving in the manner in which they were designed. While these injuries may not hurt, as time passes they do cause the joints to begin deteriorating: A process known as VSC or vertebral subluxation complex. Our bodies were magnificently designed to regulate and heal themselves. Your heart pumps blood throughout your body, your lungs supply your circulatory system with oxygen, your stomach digests what you eat, and your elimination system removes waste products. All of these systems function without any conscious effort from you, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, for 70, 80, 90 or even more than 100 years! That is because your nerve system is the master controller of your body. It is responsible for orchestrating, in perfect harmony, all of your body’s functions. Your spinal bones surround and protect the nerves in your spinal cord. When your spine is misaligned due to a vertebral subluxation, the spinal joints will put pressure on one or more nerves, interfering with the smooth communication of nerve signals along the nerve pathway. Since every cell in your body is connected to your brain through nerves that run through your spinal cord, a subluxation will adversely affect the cell to which the nerve is connected. As a result, lifelong spinal degeneration is the reason why so many people experience chronic health problems all over their bodies. Chiropractic adjustments remove the interference to your nerve system. FACEY MEDICAL When it comes to health care in the San Fernando and Santa Clarita Valleys, few names are as familiar as Facey Medical Group. Made up of over 180 physicians in a wide variety of clinical specialties, they’ve built a reputation for providing connected, patient-centered care. Facey is also launching a completely redesigned website in August that will feature real-time online appointment scheduling for all of their physicians. “Online appointment scheduling is a convenience that more of our patients have been asking for,” says the group’s vice president, Roscoe Marter, M.D. “And it’s part of a broader push to modernize the Facey experience online. Moving to Providence’s medical record system has given us the ability to heal in new ways and coordinate our patients’ care with other health systems. We can prescribe educational and support tools in the exam room that patients can access later in the comfort of their home.” With such a focus on patient-centered care, it’s no surprise the physicians at Facey have been voted best medical group by readers of the Santa Clarita Signal every year since 2009. At first glance, one would never consider a coin to be a security. Most people think of a coin as a form of currency that we use every day in America – quarters, dimes, nickels, even pennies. We certainly do not expect the Securities and Exchange Commission (the “SEC”) to regulate coins. However, in the new age of cryptocurrencies, there are situations in which what at first may look like just a coin may actually be considered a security. Cryptocurrency is basically e-money. Some of those most recognizable cryptocurrencies are Bitcoin and Ethereum. With all the buzz and hype over cryptocurrencies, it was inevitable that lots of people would want to get in on the action. Overnight, companies have been started for the purposes of conducting Initial Coin Offerings (ICOs) and many have raised millions, and even billions, of dollars from investors. Many times, these ICOs do not comply with federal securities laws. As a result, in past few years, the SEC has brought enforcement actions against several fraudulent offerings and has stopped the trading in several ICOs. If you want to invest in an ICO, or any security investment for that matter, the following are some steps you should take to protect yourself: 1. If an offering “guarantees” high investment returns – run! There is no such thing as guaranteed high investment return. 2. If it sounds too good to be true, it is! Do not invest – use your common sense. Remember, high returns in the past do not mean high returns in the future. 3. Know from whom you are purchasing – see if they are licensed by the SEC. If they are not, know that you will likely have no recourse against them if you lose your money. 4. Check to see if the offering is registered with the SEC – if it is not and you are not an accredited investor, chances are the offering may not be in compliance with federal or state securities laws. If it is alleged to be a crowdfunding offering, check to make sure it is being done in compliance with the crowdfunding laws.

Comfort Keepers is the premier provider of in-home care with almost 700 offices across the nation, but locally owned and operated by Myles McNamara. Our goal is to enable seniors to remain safely in the comfort and privacy of their own homes for as long as possible. Often, all that is needed is a helping hand with daily tasks, including but not limited to, meal preparation, medication monitoring, light housekeeping, laundry, transportation (beauty salon, doctors, etc.), grocery shopping, companionship, assistance with bathing/showering, grooming guidance, and recreational activities. Our service provides peace of mind knowing these needs and daily activities are being taken care of. It will allow quality time to be spent with loved ones, rather than attending to chores. STORAGE CENTER OF VALENCIA SCV Puts Its Trust in Storage Center of Valencia

At Storage Center of Valencia, conveniently located in the Lowe’s Shopping Center, we would like to thank our amazing customers and wonderful community for once again voting us Best Storage Facility. The landscaping and architectural features of the Storage Center of Valencia are your first clue that this is not your typical storage facility. As you enter our reception area, you are greeted by our pleasant staff whose goal is to do everything possible to make your moving and storage experience the best it can possibly be. Security screens run along the wall of our lobby and monitor activity throughout our facility 24/7. Our 1,800-square-foot showroom features typical unit sizes and an endless assortment of moving and packing supplies. “Wow” is a typical reaction of many first-time visitors entering our facility. In addition to the hundreds of regular storage units, there are several things that separate this company from other storage facilities. Our facility boasts 557 regular units, ranging from 5x5’s to 12x30’s, parking spaces, mailboxes and 144 wine cellar units. Among these are our climate-controlled units for pharmaceuticals and other items that must remain at a specific temperature. This is the only storage facility in this valley that offers climate- and humidity-controlled wine storage with a backup generator in the event of a power interruption. Ninety-five percent of our units are indoors, and the building is a concrete structure with a “cool deck” roofing system and solar panels, which keeps the temperatures much cooler than outdoor units. Our facility is ADA compliant, monitored, and professionally cleaned twice a week. Most people don’t realize how heat, dust and the outdoor elements affect and damage their valuables. HOW TO CONSERVE WATER AS THE MERCURY RISES Summer is one time of year when conservation efforts tend to require more sacrifice than normal. Thankfully, there are ways to help lawns and gardens withstand summers dog days without wasting water. Water wisely Watering lawns and gardens in the early morning hours is a savvy move for various reasons. By watering their lawns and gardens early in the morning, homeowners are ensuring they won’t be outside watering during those times of day when their risk for heat stroke and heat exhaustion is at its peak. In addition, watering in the early morning when the sun has not yet reached its peak decreases the amount of water that will be lost to evaporation, thereby increasing the amount of water that will make it into water-needy lawns and gardens. Shower at the beach Beach enthusiasts can conserve water and save money on their water bills by taking quick showers at the beach to wash the sand off. A cold shower can be the perfect remedy after a long day of soaking up some sun at the beach. Take nights off from doing dishes Hand-washing dishes may seem like a more effective way to conserve water than using a dishwasher, but that’s not the case. The National Resources Defense Council notes that hand-washing dishes can consume as many as 27 gallons of water, while Energy Star¨-rated dishwashers consume just three gallons of water. Before running the dishwasher, make sure it’s full. Cover your pool Keeping pools covered during the dog days of summer reduces the likelihood that pool water will be lost to evaporation. In fact, the GRACE Communications Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to creating sustainable food systems, notes that uncovered pools can lose as much as 1,000 gallons of water to evaporation each month. Conserving water during the dog days of summer may require some sacrifice. But such sacrifices are easier than many people may expect. (MC)

CONSIDERING AN ENERGY AUDIT? GET INFORMED Overconsumption of energy is a problem that plagues many homeowners. Wasting energy can hurt homeowners’ bottom lines and the planet. But many homeowners aren’t aware just how much energy their homes are consuming and even wasting. That’s why a home energy audit can be so important. A home energy audit or assessment investigates just how much energy a home consumes so homeowners can make their homes more energy efficient. Audits identify where energy is being wasted and can offer suggestions to fix the problem. The U.S. Department of Energy advises that the average U.S. household consumes around 90 million btus in a year. Of the energy used in homes, nearly 50 percent goes to heating and cooling. Water heating, appliances, electronics, and lighting account for the remaining consumption. Consumers can save between 5 and 30 percent on home energy bills by getting a home energy audit and making the adjustments advised by auditors. There are two types of energy audits: professional and do-it-yourself. Professional auditors will go room-to-room to assess a home’s energy use. Typical testing includes thermographic scans and infrared cameras to determine air leakage and insulation; a blower door test, which depressurizes the home and simulates the effect of a 20 mph wind to find air leaks; and watt meter measurements to test energy usage by various devices throughout the house. Before an auditor comes to the house, homeowners can make a list of any problems or concerns they want to discuss with the auditor. The auditor also may interview the homeowner to learn about how the home normally runs and can analyze energy bills to determine typical energy consumption. Windows, doors, HVAC systems, insulation, fireplaces, and lighting fixtures all may be assessed during a professional audit. Even though a professional audit is usually the best way to determine where a home is losing energy, homeowners can conduct their own audits to detect and fix problems. Locating and sealing air leaks, addressing inadequate ventilation, checking that insulation levels and vapor barriers are at recommended levels, and inspecting HVAC systems should be part of any DIY audit. If a heating/cooling unit is more than 15 years old, the DOE suggests having it replaced with a newer, energy-efficient unit. An energy audit can identify areas around a home where improvements can be made to reduce energy consumption and waste. Upgrading to new appliances, replacing light bulbs, sealing drafts, improving insulation, and addressing moisture and water leaks can be good for the environment and help homeowners save money. (MC)

In fact, according to the National Eating Trends survey and custom research by the NPD group, in 2016 the average person ate 38 meals at other people’s homes. Knowing how to cook, set the mood and entertain is increasingly important for many homeowners. Installing and outfitting a home bar can provide guests with the features of a night out, only without the crowds or bar tabs that come at the end of the night. A home bar is a place where hosts and their guests can gather and enjoy great conversation. Such a spot also can serve as a neighborhood hangout Ñ a smart choice for those who want to indulge safely and not have to drive home afterward. Creating a home bar need not be a difficult project. By investing in basic equipment, stocking up on preferred liquors and gaining some mixology expertise, hosts can impress and entertain their guests. Establish a bar setup Home bars can range from rolling carts to built-in wet bars to a single tray of items. Space in a home will dictate the kind of bar homeowners can have. Rolling bar carts are popular and versatile, and they can be kept stationary or rolled in and out of a room as needed.
