NEW LAWS ON SEXUAL ASSAULT, EMPLOYEE TRAINING, SETTLEMENTS BY MICHAEL R. FOSTAKOWSKY, ESQ., Poole & Shaffery LLP

G

ov. Jerry Brown has signed into law several new bills, including one that extends statute of limitations time frame to file sexual harassment claims; another prohibiting confidential settlement agreements for sexual harassment claims and a third requiring mandatory sexual harassment training for all business with five employees or more. These new laws become effective here in California on January 1, 2019. ASSEMBLY BILL 1619 Currently, California law

provided a three-year statute of limitations on civil claims for sexual assault. Under the new law, the window of time to bring such a claim has more than tripled, from three years to ten years.

the settlement payment amount if they so choose. SENATE BILL 1343 Lastly, if your business employees five or more persons, California law now requires all supervisory employees to undergo at least two hours of sexual harassment-prevention training and also requires at least one hour of such training for non-supervisory employees. This includes seasonal and temporary employees, as well. This law greatly expands the type and number of employers subject to the obligations of sexual harassment prevention training. Notably, prior to the implementation of this bill, only California employers

of 50 or more employees were required to provide such training, and it was limited to only supervisory employees. California employers will be wise to reach out to their employment counsel to ensure compliance with these new laws impacting their business in the coming year. Michael R. Fostakowsky, Esq., is a member of the employment and labor law department of Poole & Shaffery. The attorneys at Poole & Shaffery are wellversed in the new legislation and ready to assist employers with their legal needs, including litigation, counseling, handbook creation/amendment and employee training.

ENERGY FOR CALIFORNIA BY CALIFORNIANS

T

he holiday season is a time of reflection for all Californians to appreciate the contributions of working families and ensure that we are doing everything we can so the next generation of California workers can provide for their families. As the fifth-largest economy in the world, California needs a lot of energy, and our energy supply is critical to meeting the needs of working Californians. In fact, Californians need more than twice as much energy than the state currently produces. The rest is imported from places like Saudi Arabia, Iraq and Ecuador that don’t apply the Golden State’s stringent safety, labor, human rights and environmental standards. As California’s largest oil and natural gas exploration and production company on a gross-operated basis, California Resources Corporation, or CRC, takes our leadership role seriously as we advance policies

that increase the state’s energy supply, environmental quality and economic inclusion. That’s why we endorse an “All-of-the-Above” energy mix that integrates every in-state source of energy, including renewable energy sources such as wind and solar and traditional energy sources such as oil and natural gas, to provide affordable and reliable energy for our state. CRC strongly believes California can meet both the pressing social and economic needs of working families and its ambitious environmental goals by replacing our state’s chronic dependence on imported energy with affordable, reliable and secure local energy production. This increases the state’s selfsufficiency and generates local jobs, government revenues and economic growth. In fact, the oil and natural gas industry provides high-wage jobs and economic mobility through a

diverse and empowered workforce. The industry represents a path to the middle class for Californians from all educational backgrounds and has an average salary of over $84,000. CRC also proudly shares and endorses the state’s commitment to conserve our natural resources and protect our environment while providing for our future energy needs. Our investments in advanced technology and innovative workplace practices enable us to produce oil and natural gas in ways that offer unparalleled 4

levels of safety and protection for workers, the environment and our local communities. CRC is a value-driven company focused on safely, responsibly and reliably supplying affordable energy for California by Californians. As a proud California company, CRC is dedicated to ensuring that diverse communities across our state have a vibrant and sustainable future. 018 was a very good year for the Santa Clarita Valley. Our local job growth has chugged along in a healthy manner, and we are on track to add several thousand new jobs in the SCV. As the year wraps, I like to look back on some key highlights from the year.

tiny bit of relief to California’s undersupplied residential real estate market. And while it is frustrating while it’s happening, the long-planned and longawaited construction on I-5 will ultimately add a new HOV lane, auxiliary lanes in critical locations, and extended truck lanes.

SCV COMPANIES EXPAND While seeing new headlines of companies moving to the SCV is always a thrill, we also are pleased to see SCV companies grow. This year we saw many such expansions, Mechanix Wear, Lief Organics, and Canyon Plastics. We also saw Santa Clarita Studios add new state-of-the art post-production offices, and additional parking spaces, making them an even more desirable filming location. NEW COMPANIES ARRIVE That doesn’t mean new companies aren’t also moving to SCV. This year we saw announcements of the relocation of Dream Team Beaute with 150 new employees moving from Sun Valley. We are also welcoming some smaller manufacturers, including M&M Fasteners and Accu Grinding. NEW CONSTRUCTION ABOUNDS After years of almost no new development during and immediately following the recession, it is a welcome site to see new construction underway. We have new industrial buildings going up, and future phases being planned. New office space is being constructed at Vista Canyon, and the new Headquarters of Logix Federal Credit Union is taking shape. We are seeing new housing being built, adding a 7

ENTREPRENEURS MEET FOR STARTUP WEEKEND BY RYAN MANCINI Signal Staff Writer

A

small group of would-be entrepreneurs had 54 hours to ready themselves for a successful business plan at the end of Startup Weekend SCV, held in the Dr. Dianne G. Van Hook University Center at College of the Canyons over the first weekend in November. Beginning Friday, Nov. 2, seven entrepreneurs met together to share their ideas and get a feel for how to make their businesses work one day. Everyone attended three separate seminars focused on marketing and market plans, finance and organization. After working with mentors on Saturday to finalize how they would

present their pitches, they presented to a group of judges made up of local business owners. Ahead of the “Shark Tank” style decision-making, entrepreneurs needed to understand what to say after each “no” response, said lead organizer Alex Honadel. She previously worked with Startup Weekend SCV, succeeding with her pitch that became ALH Services, which sells smart sprinkler controllers and energy efficient pool pumps. According to Ben Honadel, Alex’s father and owner of Pools By Ben, this event was about overcoming the no’s. “A lot of times, the entrepreneur is going down this road, but they’re stuck and they don’t know what to do next,” Ben Honadel said. “And if

you open up a book or go to college, it’s hard to find somebody who can say, ‘I’ve done this, this is how it worked for me, this is how you’ve got to do your pitch in order to have an investor say yes.’ The goal of the weekend is to push them down the road to getting yes, because a yes means they have funding, and then they can grow their company — which the end result is what they really want … ‘How do I make money?’” Ben Honadel served as one of the judges, along with SalonDiAmore owner Brianna Forshee, CEO Space owner Martha Aguilera and Pinned Up owner Lisa Szeto. At the end of the day, the judges selected Jake Campbell for his pitch. Called Jake’s KAR, his startup’s 9

mission gives people a platform to connect with other travelers going to a specific destination, sharing the cost of travel and saving time while reducing traffic. “It’s given me a lot more (opportunity) to talk to many different people, getting different opinions, views,” Campbell said of Startup Weekend. “It’s given me a lot more options of where I can go next now.” Campbell said he will continue finding ways of reaching more people through social media and work on the branding. “It’s showing interest,” he said, “it’s just (about) reaching the right people.”  

HEARING AIDS THAT ALLOW YOU TO ENJOY MUSIC AGAIN DR. KEVIN BOLDER, AU.D. Audiology Associates

T

oday’s hearing aids are constantly improving to make sound clearer and more natural to the user. One common complaint among hearing aid users is that while hearing aids can greatly improve speech understanding, they do not provide the sound input range necessary for listening to music. That has all changed with the Oticon OPN. This revolutionary hearing aid allows the user to pick up the high-level, ener-

getic sounds of music, which would typically be distorted by hearing aids of the past. Now, rather than struggling to distinguish between sounds, music lovers can enjoy each individual instrument with improved clarity and less effort. Whether you enjoy listening to recorded or live music, hearing aids can help improve your listening experience. Because today’s hearing aids make it easier to hear and understand in background noise, situations like concerts or music festivals are also improved and can be more comfortable for those with hearing loss to attend.

It is not uncommon for musicians to struggle with sensorineural hearing loss. High levels of sound can damage the inner ear and create long-term hearing problems, so those who spend a lot of time around musical instruments, sound systems, and noisy crowds without hearing protection are more susceptible to hearing damage. Hearing protection such as musician’s ear plugs can help protect against this, but unfortunately nothing can be done to reverse sensorineural hearing loss. The good news is that the advancements of today’s hear-

11

ing technology allows expert musicians, casual fans, and everyone in between to get back their favorite sounds and enjoy listening to music again! Ready to try OPN hearing aids? We can help.   To schedule a hearing consultation, please call Audiology Associates at 661-284-1900. Patrice Rifkind, Au.D. and Kevin Bolder, Au.D are two of the best in Santa Clarita and San Fernando Valley. Visit our website at www.Audio logyAssociates.net or stop by our office located at 23838 Valencia Blvd, Suite 100, Valencia.

NEW ONLINE HUB OF RESOURCES FOR ENTREPRENEURS LAUNCHED BY TAMMY MURGA Signal Staff Writer

A

s a leader in innovation and technology, the Santa Clarita Valley has created a prosperous chain of support for all things related to entrepreneurship. An extra link to the homegrown network was recently added with the launch of a new website to connect the local startup community. Innovatesantaclarita.com, a collaboration between the city of Santa Clarita and the SCV Economic Development Corp. launched Wednesday as part of the 4th annual Innovate Santa Clarita campaign. “The website came because there’s been a broad recognition that we need to create a go-to resource where entrepreneurs and startups

find a comprehensive reading list for them,” said Holly Schroeder, president and CEO of SCVEDC. The site links to well-established resources around the area such as the city’s Business Incubator, which provides low-cost office space, training and mentorship, College of the Canyons and city libraries. Under the “Get Involved” tab, users can offer and receive help from local experts. “Whether you have a new business idea and are looking for support, or if you’re an experienced entrepreneur and want to mentor the next generation, this is the one-stop place to search and do so,” said Covert. For those interested in finding out local events and connecting with those in the industry, the “Community” tab on the website offers links

to partners like Startup Weekend SCV, Google’s Startup Grind and 1 Million Cups, all organizations that host multiple networking and coaching events. “One of the things that entrepreneurs continue to ask is, ‘Where is my community?’” said Denise Covert, economic development associate with the city. “As entrepreneurs, you look for your ecosystem, and this portal will be a great tool to connect.” Soon to be added on the website is a blog, an information area to access articles and podcast episodes by the SCVEDC. “The podcasts feature interviews with local startups, and everyone will have access to them on innovatesantaclarita.com, or anywhere you listen to podcasts,” said Schroeder.

16

This year, the website is not the only feature of the digital campaign. A two-week series, from Nov. 2 to 16, offers events including Startup Weekend SCV, a 52-hour challenge to build a startup. The campaign is part of Innovate LA, a countywide celebration of innovation and creativity throughout the region to support and inspire entrepreneurs across all sectors. Participants are encouraged to follow along on social media during the campaign using #InnovateSCV and #MadeInSCV and share the resources available on the new online hub. For more information about the Santa Clarita Business Incubator and the listed events, visit InnovateSantaClarita.com.

leep recommendations: Drivers who fall short are more likely to crash Hitting the road tomorrow morning? Better hit the pillow on time tonight. Sleeping fewer than seven of the past 24 hours can increase your accident risk, a new study suggests. The notion that drowsy driving leads to car crashes is nothing new. But unlike previous research, the authors of this study endeavored to establish a correlation between how much a driver has slept and his or her chances of causing a crash. Experts recommend that most adults get from seven to nine hours of sleep each night. But as many as one in three people regularly get less sleep than that. For this study, researchers looked at U.S. Department of Transportation data from 5,470 crashes, including driver interviews. Here were some of their key findings: Compared to those who slept at least seven hours, drivers who slept fewer than four of the previous 24 hours were much more likely to cause a crash— over 15 times more likely in fact. Their crash risk was similar to the crash risk of a drunk driver whose blood alcohol content is roughly 1.5 times the legal limit. Even drivers who slept for six hours—just one hour shy of the minimum sleep recommendation—were still 30 percent more likely to be responsible for a crash. Falling asleep at the wheel isn’t the only danger drowsy drivers face. Drivers who stay awake can still make mistakes, according to the study’s authors. The study was published in the journal SLEEP. You can check it out online. How to get a good night’s rest

If you’re having trouble sleeping, following these tips from the National Sleep Foundation might help improve your sleep Go to bed and wake up at the same time, even on weekends. This helps keep your body’s internal clock in sync. Establish a relaxing bedtime routine, such as dimming the lights in your home, turning off

the TV and listening to calming music, or taking a warm bath before you go to bed. Skip your afternoon nap, if you normally take one. Get some regular exercise (when scheduling your workouts, be aware that exercising too close to bedtime can disrupt sleep). Make sure your bedroom is a

SIGNAL HOSTS TOP BUSINESSES EVENT BY PERRY SMITH

BUSINESS JOURNAL EDITOR

I

n order to recognize a few of the names and organization that help keep the Santa Clarita Valley consistently ranked as one of the most business friendly areas in the state, The Signal is hosting its Top Businesses awards banquet Dec. 6. The event, as the name implies, is meant to celebrate leadership and achievement among the SCV’s business leaders. “The Santa Clarita Valley has so many factors that make it a great place to do business,” said Richard Budman, publisher of the Santa Clarita Valley Signal. “We’re taking this opportunity to take a break for an evening and recognize a few of the standout achievers and organizations.” The list of honorees reflects a who’s who of names and places that have played a significant role for SCV commerce and industry in the last 12 months. The names of those include familiar ones as well as some that a relatively new to the area. The Business Leaders of the Year, for example, include Holly Schroeder, president and CEO of the Santa Clarita Valley Economic Development Corp., or SCVEDC, who leads an organization that’s created numerous public and private partnership to help local businesses. A new web resource for entrepreneurs, as well as several new additions to the SCV. And the other awardee for Business Leaders of the Year is John Shaffery, who’s a member of the board of directors for the SCV, as one of the founding partners of Poole & Shaffery, which just celebrated its 20th anniversary in the Santa Clarita. And both individuals play an important role in why the SCVEDC is being honored as the Top Businesses Growth Leader, for its advocacy and work in attracting new business. The Company of the Year award is being shared between a business that’s creating a state-of-the-art community on the west side of the SCV and one of Santa Clarita’s fastest growing companies: FivePoint Holdings LLC and Landscape Development Inc., respectively. FivePoint’s master-planned neighborhoods set for Newhall Ranch will provide thousands of new homes for the population growth expected to hit the SCV as part of the area’s longstanding “One Valley,

22

One Vision” plan for development. Landscape Development has expanded quickly in the last 12 months, opening a new office and then adding a Las Vegas location into its fold. Scorpion is being celebrated for its success and growth in 2018 as the Santa Clarita Valley’s Employer of the Year. The internet marketing company has been recognized for its employee-friendly atmosphere, which includes innovative uses of the workspace that have proven popular. The Innovation of the Year award has two recipients for 2018: Kaiser Permanente has expanded patient care access in the Santa Clarita Valley with a brand new, welcoming facility; and Advanced Bionics remains a global leader that constantly creates new technology and help for those with cochlear implants. The Best Community Impact award is also being given to two organizations: College of the Canyons, for the last decade has consistently grown its graduating classes, increasing access for local students. The other honoree, Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital, is adding more than 140 patient beds to its facilities, and continually brings new health outreach to SCV residents. The New Business of the Year is being given to Sand Canyon Country Club, which was recently purchased by Steve Kim. Previously known as Robinson Ranch, Kim has announced big plans for Sand Canyon. And speaking of getting the word out, Ad Campaign of the Year award also showed the type of creativity and innovation rampant in the SCV’s business community: “Stolen,” by the city of Santa Clarita creatively demonstrates how residents need to be more mindful of the “designer collection” it makes available for would-be thieves; and “SCV Points Of Interest,” by Valencia Acura demonstrates not only its vehicles’ curb appeal, but also the Santa Clarita Valley’s. Don and Cheri Fleming, co-owners of Valencia Acura, are also generous philanthropists in the local community, and their giving, as well as the operation their call their Friendship dealership, are no doubt big factors in why they’re taking home the People’s Choice award, as well. Tickets can still be purchased for the Dec. 6 recognition dinner, which is taking place from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at Valencia Country Club, 27330 Tourney Road. The cost is $50 per person. For more information and to purchase tickets, visit SignalSCV.com/ businessawards or call (661) 287-5564.

AWARD-WINNING SANTA CLARITA BUSINESS INCUBATOR THRIVING BY DENISE COVERT, Economic Development Associate, City of Santa Clarita

A

lmost five years ago, the Santa Clarita Business Incubator opened its doors with a mission to help local entrepreneurs groom their cutting-edge ideas and connect them to resources to help their businesses thrive. The idea being that participating companies would put down roots, grow and flourish in the Santa Clarita Valley, ultimately adding high-quality jobs to the community. This vision is being realized, as several companies have graduated from the program, new high tech jobs have been created, the businesses have chosen to remain in Santa Clarita after graduation and they continue to be successful.

Last month, the Santa Clarita Business Incubator was proud to recognize tenant, Acqubit, for graduating the program early. Formerly known as 3D-SensIR, Acqubit designs, builds and offers handheld smart 3D LIDAR camera systems that transform reality into photorealistic 3D models directly onsite. Just over two years into their residency at the Business Incubator, Acqubit secured its first contract and recently transitioned into a local operating space with an expanded footprint to accommodate future growth. The Business Incubator currently has two tenants, each making revolutionary changes in their respective industries. Celitech Inc. is developing the world’s first digital network that enables international travelers to get mobile connectivity through

an app, which will revolutionize the data roaming industry. Earlier this year, Celitech was selected from over 7,000 startup companies to exhibit at the prestigious Startup Grind Global Conference in Silicon Valley, and CEO Ahmad Fares was invited to be a speaker at the MVNO World Congress in Madrid, Spain. Fares is also a participant in the Forbes Technology Council, an invitation-only community for world-class technology executives. Rangle News is using technology to create efficiencies for newsrooms. Their flagship product is their “citizen journalism” newsgathering app, which is revolutionizing the way newsworthy content is created and how consumers access news. The Santa Clarita Business Incubator was recently awarded the

24

prestigious Helen Putnam Award for Excellence in City-Business Relations. This comes as a result of the program’s innovative approach to supporting entrepreneurship, the success of creating new companies and high quality jobs, and strategically working with business partners to support these companies. The Santa Clarita Business Incubator is a partnership between the City of Santa Clarita, College of the Canyons and the Small Business Development Center. The Business Incubator is proud to also partner with private companies like Poole and Shaffery, LLP and Hedman Partners to provide resident companies access to high quality legal and financial services. For more information on the Santa Clarita Business Incubator program and their tenants, visit InnovateSantaClarita.com.

Valencia Acura customers are not just customers — they are friends. The relationships developed with buyers run deeper than sales. We appreciate representing the Acura brand. Every day our team works to make the dream of owning one a reality. More than a motto, Precision Crafted Performance is the signature trait and demonstrated in every model. This summer, I was invited as a special guest to tour the Honda headquarters while in Japan. What’s remarkable about this journey is that I was the first Acura dealership owner to have this honor. Amazing that the Friendship dealership extended across the ocean to connect Santa Clarita with Tokyo, Japan.

As we head into the holidays, know that there are local businesses that support the community. When possible, I encourage you to shop local to keep tax dollars flowing into the city. Valencia Acura is a local, family-owned and operated car dealership and has been recognized as a prestigious Acura Precision Team Dealership for 12 years and awarded Acura’s Council of Excellence for 14 years. SCV BUSINESS VOICES

URGENT: IT’S TIME TO ADJUST YOUR TAX PLAN BY JOHN VANCE President of Vance Wealth and Certified Financial Planner

N

ew tax laws are significant and sweeping. To move from loss to gain, it’s time to rethink your tax strategy — especially in retirement. When it comes to your finances, knowledge provides protection where it’s needed most. The right guidance, at the right time, can make the difference between preparing for life’s uncertainties and anticipating them. With recent changes in tax legislation, it’s more important than ever to put knowledge to work ahead of the next tax season. This year, new tax law has gone into effect and will likely produce significant changes to your financial strategy and,

especially, your retirement. There’s still time, however, to take advantage of tax-saving opportunities if you act now. Whatever you thought you knew about your taxes — throw it out. With the recent tax changes, we need to take a fresh look at everything, and adjust your tax strategy accordingly. The most significant change you may have to cope with is the switch to filing the standard deduction. Many people have been filing itemized deductions for the past 40 years, reaping the benefits of charitable giving, property taxes and other common tax breaks. By not filing itemized deductions, however, you’ll need to find new ways to save. Most importantly, you don’t want to be reactive in this situation. If you adjust your strat-

egy now, you still have time to take advantage of some unique planning opportunities. Since 2003, Vance Wealth has served as a premier financial planning practice passionately committed to helping clients and families succeed at every step of their financial journey. Serving Southern California, the practice delivers innovative and comprehensive wealth management strategies

precisely customized to each client’s goals and needs. Our mission is to help our clients and families work to succeed at every step of their financial journey, inspiring them to achieve more. To learn more, call (661)7750950, email info@vancewealth. com or visit VanceWealth.com.
