Premier America staff prepare to serve the financial needs of members at the Valencia branch. By Jim Walker

eing an owner of your financial institution might be a strange concept, but that’s exactly the status bestowed when banking
with Premier America Credit Union. In fact, the credit union’s motto is, “Bank Where You Own the Place.” And whether offering higher savings rates, lower loan rates or lower fees, the credit union has always made a meaningful difference in the lives of its members. For nearly 60 years, the full-service financial institution has built lasting relationships with member-owners in Southern California by offering value-driven banking products, personalized service and making community contributions. “It’s not unusual for us to greet most of our members by their first name,” said Aaron Garcia, Premier America Branch Manager in Valencia. “Our mission is to understand the financial needs of local residents so that we deliver a truly personalized banking experience.” A perfect example of this personalized banking experience occurred on the day this story was being written, Garcia said. That very rainy day a Premier America member came into the Valencia branch to deposit a check from another financial institution. However, she realized she had forgotten to bring the check in. At this point she reluctantly decided that, even though it was raining hard, she
would drive home, get the check and drive back. To the rescue came a Certified Member Advocate (CMA), who highlighted the convenience of Premier America’s mobile banking app. The CMA informed the member that, by using the app, she only had to take a picture of the check and it would be deposited electronically. In this way she was spared the return trip on wet roads. Credit unions, such as Premier America, have a rich history evolving from the idea that people working together can create better financial solutions, especially when, as owners, members have a vested interest in their collective success. And this concept goes well beyond mere financial benefits. “Premier America Credit Union is deeply committed to making a difference in each of the communities we serve,” said Christina Madaras, Director of Community Development and Corporate Citizenship. “By establishing relationships with nonprofit organizations, supporting local initiatives and providing volunteer support, the credit union is able to champion a number of important local causes.” For example, she noted that Premier America is regularly a sponsor for several recurring charity

events in the Valencia area, including the American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life, the Alzheimer’s Association’s Walk to End Alzheimer’s, and the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Light The Night. She added that Premier America employees also actively participate in these events. In 2017 Premier America will celebrate 60 years in business as a financial institution, and now features more than $2 billion in assets, nearly 100,000 members and 18 Southern California branches, including the Valencia branch, which has been serving local residents since 2004. “Unlike a bank,” Garcia said, “we are guided by our member-owners and not shareholders, so our profits are reinvested into the organization. In this way we can offer higher savings rates, lower loan rates and lower fees than banks do.” Premier America members not only benefit from personal attention, but also a full complement of deposit, lending, investment and insurance services. Visit the credit union at 27550 Newhall Ranch Road, #203 in Valencia. Branch Manager Aaron Garcia can be reached at 800-7724000 or by email at aaron.garcia@premieramerica.com.

Accurate Freight Focuses on Customers and Teamwork By Martha Garcia
S
hip a product overnight to reach its destination on Christmas Eve? Tony Demma, owner of Accurate Freight Systems, doesn’t bat an eye. Offering customers transportation and logistics solutions 24/7 is what Demma and Accurate Freight do best. Demma built the business from the ground up in 2006, using his more than 30 years of experience in the freight industry. Combined with the nearly 30 years experience of his Operations Manager, Alan Jue, the two have created a freight business like no other in the Santa Clarita Valley. “Alan has been here since the very first minute,” said Demma. “He is instrumental in our success and one of the hardest working people I know.” Demma began his career in freight in 1985 in Chicago, working for large companies, like Fed Ex Custom Critical. Prompted by his wife’s health, the family moved to Valencia where he began working with another local shipper. After that company went out of business, Demma was encouraged to use his extensive industry experience and “can do” attitude to start his own business. The company has continued to grow, now offering more than 45,000 square feet of warehousing. Demma attributes Accurate Freight’s success to three things: great customers, amazing staff, and the support of key business partners. Demma explained his customers are loyal because they know Accurate Freight works hard, has competitive rates and a wide range of service. Those services include, courier work, freight, warehousing, fulfillment, and more.
Keys to Success Jue runs the operations, while Demma focuses on sales. Demma has sold freight every day since 1985 and still enjoys being involved in that process, but knows the key to a good business is the employees. “A large part of my success is the ability to sur-

Evans brings his 25 years of transportation experience and was excited to come on board because he knew Accurate Freight is a leader in the industry. “Anybody can sell freight and do it in a different way, but how they take care of their customers is what sets them apart from the rest,” said Evans. “I am very much customer oriented too. When you take care of the customer and are loyal to them, they will be loyal to you.” The Bank of Santa Clarita was another key business partner Demma attributed Accurate Freight’s

Tile Boutique Design Center Has Unique Approach By Ruben J. Porras
“F
eatures tile floors and countertops” is a statement that you will see often in real estate advertisements and hear from Realtors and property managers. One local company focuses on making tile installations beautiful and unique to enrich properties and boost resale value. Serving the Santa Clarita Valley and the San Fernando Valley, Tile Boutique is a one-stop shop for everything tile-related. Once part of a popular chain of tile stores with a 30-year history, Tile Boutique changed hands in 1996 when two brothers purchased the store from their employer. The story of the Vasquez Brothers and Tile Boutique is an example of the American Dream at work. Upon finishing their studies at a local college, both Vasquez brothers went to work at the flagship location of a chain of tile stores. They worked long hours and learned every aspect of the business. Eventually, the brothers became general manager and assistant manager of the store. One day the owner of the store announced that he wanted to sell the business. The brothers planned, consulted their families, pooled their resources and bought the store. The rest is history. According to its website, Tile Boutique has a long history because it has a unique business model. The store covers all aspects of tile sales and installation. As a distributor, the store sells to other tile dealers, as a wholesaler, the store sells to contractors, architects, and designers, and as a direct seller, the store sells to individual homeowners such as semi-do-it-yourselfers and pure do-ityourselfers. To maintain their business model, the store focuses on superior product knowledge, product origin, honesty and complete satisfaction. The Vasquez brothers and all their employees don’t rest until every customer knows everything there is to know about the tile that they are interested in. One factor that Tile Boutique takes a great deal of care with is sourcing their product and explaining to their customers how quality varies from different places in the world. The company’s website explains that the world economy has flooded the market with all levels of product quality. Tile Boutique takes great pride in wading through the options and educating customers. Regardless of whether you’ve been dreaming of a shower tiled around a Marilyn Monroe theme or a kitchen that will inspire you to become a master chef, Tile Boutique can do it. Porcelain, granite, ceramic, wood, natural stone, wall mosaic, quarry, floor, marble, travertine, limestone, glass, metal, manufactured stone, terra cotta, stone slabs, and custom-designed tiles are all available. Tile Boutique is also the exclusive distributor for NUHEAT premium under-tile radiant floor heating
systems, American Olean tile products, and Bright Glaze tile care and maintenance products. Tile Boutique also carries tile products from Astor Tileworks and Walker Zanger. Every stage of your tile product is considered by the company. Tile Boutique even stocks architectural sinks and faucets and all the “rough” product that you need to install tile. “Rough” products include ancillary products such as cement, grout, limestone “mud”, concrete surface liners, tools, measuring devices, including laser units, tile and stone cutting machines and drills, diamond-edged blades, polishing machines, sealers and penetrating fluids, under-tile floor heaters, and more. Chem Dry of Santa Clarita Takes Healthy Approach By Rubén Porras

rooks and Kim Blaquera dedicate their lives to making your life healthier. For the past 29 years, the couple has owned and operated Chem-Dry of Santa Clarita Valley with a focus on fair pricing, the highest quality possible, and great customer service — the kind of customer service that is hard to find any more in any industry. “What I love about what my company does is that not only do we make homes clean, we make them healthy. A clean home is great, but it’s not really clean or healthy until the carpet, furniture, tile and grout are clean and sanitized. You can have the cleanest home in the country, but if your floors aren’t clean, it won’t look, feel or smell clean,” explained Kim Blaquera. As technology and the global need to take care of the environment have advanced, the Blaqueras have committed themselves to learning about the latest techniques and environmentally friendly green cleaning products. To put their training to good use, they have invested in the most powerful truck-mounted, industrial-strength cleaning equipment available in the industry today. “We use the latest, most up-to-date equipment and methods to safely and professionally clean your carpets, upholstery, tile and grout. We are also experts at pet urine treatments and stain removal,” said Blaquera. According to Chem-Dry of Santa Clarita Valley’s website, the company uses a Hot Carbonating Extraction (HCE) process tested by a leading independent air quality laboratory in multiple homes. The lab found that Chem-Dry removes an average of 98.1 percent of common household allergens from carpets and upholstery. The common allergens tested were dog and cat dander and dust mite allergens. The process, when coupled with a sanitizer, was found to remove an average of 89 percent of the airborne bacteria in the home and 82.3 percent of the bacteria in carpets. The passion that Chem-Dry of Santa Clarita Valley has for their business has advanced Brooks Blaquera to 5-Star Master Technician status — the highest level attainable in the industry. Customers have taken notice of the company’s professionalism and attention to detail.

On time, so friendly. He explained everything to our satisfaction, gave us options so we could choose what was best for our situation. I have multiple chemical sensitivities (MCS) and asthma, and the cleaning products used were safe/green! Didn’t bother me at all! Brooks pre-treated our many problem areas (we have several rescue dogs!), thoroughly cleaned our very old carpet, and he finished off with a sanitizer which I requested to kill germs. Carpet completely dried in 2-3 hours. Brooks is conscientious and an extremely hard worker, making sure nothing is missed. We will definitely call on him again,” wrote Robert R. MS Fulfillment is a family-owned, full-service order fulfillment company. It provides both business-to-consumer and business-to-business fulfillment for an array of branded consumer products. AMS operates six fulfillment centers in Santa Clarita, encompassing nearly 700,000 square feet of space, and the company employs more than 360 people, many of who are local residents. “However, we do a number of things that not only create jobs but also help generate careers,” said AMS CEO Ken Wiseman. Noting that 40 to 50 percent of AMS jobs are entry level, he explained, “We recognize the fact that our industry offers a unique opportunity for entry level workers or people returning to the work force. So we decided to focus our energies on what these individuals need in a working environment.” Wiseman said AMS has a long-standing tradition of supporting and working with the SCV community. “We establish partnerships with local social service organizations and College of the Canyons for hiring of candidates and continued education.” He explained that these organizations provide candidates for employment through their on the job training programs and that their agreements with AMS allow AMS to utilize and train the employees to company standards and then hire them full time – or the employees can take the skills they’ve learned to a new company. “Ken and I have achieved a great balance as partners,” AMS President Jay Catlin said. “Ken’s passion is working with employees and the community, while I focus much of my time on new business development and client relations. Ken and I are also both heavily engaged in all matters relating to financial performance, and both of us believe that employ-
ee development is not only personally rewarding, but also a critical component of our bottom line success.” In January, 50 top educators from around the state were invited to attend a contract education conference at COC in order to discuss how community colleges can provide customized training for local companies. During the event Ken Wiseman was awarded a Certificate of Appreciation from COC for his support of the AMS/ COC Apprenticeship Program – and as part of the event there was a tour of the AMS educational facility, led by Wiseman and Catlin. “What people need to know is that someone believes in them. We do, and hopefully this program will help our apprentices believe in themselves,” Wiseman told those present. During the tour Adrineh Terantonians, Director of Workforce & Career Development Operations at Goodwill Southern California, said, “It was my honor and privilege to visit such an extraordinary organization and we are looking forward to working with them, moving forward, and celebrating their achievements.” More recently, Wiseman said that AMS has been working with College of the Canyons job candidates for two years in the original AMS classroom, but was very excited that the company has added a new 25-person computer lab. And he said the lab would also be available to other SCV businesses and not-for-profit organizations to lease for their own purposes. Jay Catlin was also very excited about the new facility. “It’s great to see our Advance My Skills computer lab fully launched. Educating our employees is something we believe in, for the long term benefit of our valued employees and also for AMS as a business,” he said. Newhall Pharmacy, Family Owned Old-time Pharmacy By Alicia Doyle
O
n March 1, 2016 Newhall Pharmacy opened a new location at 24239 Main St. from its previous site at 23768 Newhall Avenue. “We will be operating in downtown historical Newhall, and adding services like compounding,” said pharmacist Moazzem H. Chowdhury, a resident of Santa Clarita since 1994 who has been living in the United States for more than three decades. Chowdhury, who graduated from the University of Dhaka in Bangladesh, has 40 years practicing as a pharmacist and vast experience as the owner and manager of Desert Drug Pharmacy in Canyon Country and Desert Drugs in Lancaster. He also is a staff pharmacist at other pharmacies including Crown Valley Pharmacy in Acton. In 1999, he was one of the first pharmacists to give flu shots in the Santa Clarita and Antelope Valleys. At Newhall Pharmacy, Chowdhury is working with his dedicated team of pharmacists and pharmacy staff to grow the family pharmacy to the next level of success. “It is a difficult time for a small business to survive; we struggled so many years and we are still operating,” Chowdhury said. “Our goal is to continue to provide the much needed healthcare services in this community. The new location surely will attract lots of new customers.” Newhall Pharmacy opened in the community in August of 2012 with the goal to provide personalized health services – especially for customers who were tired of non-individualized service found in chain pharmacies and mail order pharmacies. Chowdhury speaks from his managerial experience in numerous chain pharmacies such as Walmart, Rite Aid, K-Mart and Longs Drugs. From that, he realized that the best services are provided by small home town pharmacies like Newhall Pharmacy. “We are a family-owned, old-time retail pharmacy,” he explained. “We are committed to providing individualized service with care and compassion by a very knowledgeable pharmacist.” Newhall Pharmacy accepts most health insurance plans, and will match or beat other pharmacy

Newhall Pharmacy owner Moazzem Chowdhury with, wife, Jeenat. prices, Chowdhury noted. “We offer the lowest price on over-the-counter medication and vitamins,” he said. “And we offer free delivery with some restrictions.” Some of Newhall Pharmacy’s most popular services include flu shots, free delivery services, health information and consultations. We are particularly sensitive to the wellness needs of our seniors. Newhall Pharmacy also offers services that cannot be found elsewhere, including home service for the elderly who need a flu shot by a pharmacist,
hospice pharmacy services, and a quarterly free blood pressure and other health related clinics. One of the biggest accomplishments at Newhall Pharmacy is establishing one-on-one relationships with each customer, Chowdhury said. “We know our customers by name,” he said. “Our customers are a big family.” Newhall Pharmacy is located at 24239 Main Street, across from the Canyon Theatre Guild at 6th Street in Newhall. There’s also the standard DUI, as well as theft, vandalism or domestic altercations. “It’s incredibly stressful to find out a friend or loved one has been arrested in the city of Santa Clarita on criminal related charges,” Sandoval-March said. “Knowing what to do next isn’t always obvious.” The goal of SCV Bail Bonds is to provide customers with professional 24-hour service while focusing on treating each individual with dignity, respect and privacy. The company provides clients and the community at large no-cost bail bond consultations and the fastest release available. Having successfully served thousands of clients in the Santa Clarita community and surrounding areas since 2010, SCV Bail Bonds is building on that success by opening a second location on Soledad Canyon Road in Canyon Country. “We’re super excited to announce that we’ll soon be expanding to better service the entire Santa Clarita Valley and getting positioned to be closer to the new Santa Clarita Sheriff’s Station Jail, which will open around 2020,” said March. Their second office will join current operations, located across the street from the current Santa Clarita Jail, on Valencia Boulevard in Valencia. Their agency is open 24 hours a day. “We are the closest physical agency to the Santa

Their dedicated staff takes the time to patiently explain the bail process, and personally work with the family members, friends, clergy, attorneys, co-workers, of the defendant every step. “We set the highest ethical standards in bail and stand by our commitment of confidentiality. We understand the stress, worry and fear of the unknown,” Sandoval-March noted. “We want to help take the mystery out of bail. We always focus on helping our community members get through the tough-

est of times.” Giving back to the community is a major focus of the agency. “We support several non-profits and individual members of the community, including little league teams and high school basketball teams,” Sandoval-March said. Above all, SCV Bail Bonds is committed to providing the top level of care. “We go the extra mile by providing our clients with local information for family support or domestic violence counseling, drug and alcohol rehabilitation facilities,” Sandoval-March said. “We always offer our clients support before, during and after every bond we write.” Not everyone in town will need SCV Bail Bonds. But if they ever do, it’s comforting to know the caring family of SCV Bail Bonds is right here to help. For more information visit scvbailbonds.com or call 661-299-BAIL (2245).

W
ith the “desire to be of service” as its hallmark, Bishop Alemany High School serves both Catholic and non-Catholic families from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds Located in the northwest San Fernando Valley, adjacent to the San Fernando Rey de España Misión, Alemany is a four-year, co-educational high school of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Los Angeles, accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges and Western Catholic Educational Association, and describes itself as a “thriving educational community, boasting a racially and culturally diverse student body of about 1,350.” Miguel Fletcher, Director of Marketing for Bishop Alemany High School, noted that the school has strong ties to the Santa Clarita Valley. “Currently, we have more than 200 students who live in the Santa Clarita Valley. And we have more than 1,000 Santa Clarita Valley alumni,” he said. Fletcher offered just a few of the many reasons for this. “To begin with, Alemany’s average class size is less than 24 students, and the graduation rate is 99 percent,” he said. “And more than 75 percent of our teachers have masters or post-graduate degrees.” He went on to note that, “Bishop Alemany is an AP Capstone school, one of only two schools in the L.A. Archdiocese so-honored. Our students’ AP course grades far exceed the national average. We have a great STEM program, four-year Engineering program and a four-year Bio Medical program through Project Lead the Way. We also have a full time learning specialist to help all types of students with learning and processing needs. And our renowned Campus Ministry department teaches values, faith and the development of the whole student.” Regarding that, he added, “Our approach to religion is open, positive and engaging. Our starting point is our contention that religion is an academic
subject, like all others taught at Bishop Alemany. All of our courses have high academic standards. However, beyond these standards, each student is invited to reflect upon their own religious character, thoughts and experience as we encourage creative work and presentations. “More than 70 percent of our student population is Roman Catholic, with the rest being comprised of members of other Christian faiths, the Jewish,
Muslim, Buddhist and Hindu faiths, and some students who are non-affiliated. All are welcomed and invited to learn of the Catholic faith and to further their own spiritual journey.” Fletcher explained that Bishop Alemany offers tuition assistance directly, based on financial need. “Alemany’s Tuition Assistance program has a two-fold purpose,” he said, “to provide students an opportunity for a Catholic education, which might otherwise be inaccessible for them, and to provide
the school with a well-qualified student body, reflecting economic diversity.” He said the Bishop Alemany Tuition Assistance Committee reviews the initial application and the FACTS Grant & Aid calculation. Final aid decisions are always based on the committee’s assessment of an applicant’s needs and the budgeted funds available. Fletcher concluded that, “The most important thing for prospective students and their parents to know about Bishop Alemany High School is that we are ‘A Catholic Community of Excellence’ and we pride ourselves on servicing others.” It should be noted that one of the rapidly expanding programs at Alemany High School is its dance team. Dance Team Director Bonnie Segraves is especially excited about the program’s growth and its brand new, 3,000 square-foot Dance and Performing Arts Studio. “We started the dance team program in the 2007-2008 school year with 12 kids,” Seagraves said. “Today we have five teams and 46 kids. For the past 10 years we had to share our facility with the wrestling program. This year we were blessed to open up our own dance facility. This beautiful room now allows us to have multiple teams rehearse at the same time. We have space to rehearse large dance numbers. We have more dance space to work on dance technique and to bring in multiple dance barres to work on ballet technique.” Seagraves went on to say, “One of the things I am proud about is that our school, our program, gives kids a chance to dance where they wouldn’t have that opportunity at other schools. Many of the local public high schools require years and years of dance experience to make the team. Our program is open to kids with potential, great work ethic and heart. We offer dance classes for all students – not just dance team members. And these classes are open to both boys and girls.” For more information visit www.alemany.org or call 818-365-3925.

College of the Canyons Helps Build Strong Workforce By Alicia Doyle
A
s part of a statewide initiative to create a strong workforce, College of the Canyons is expanding its Career and Technical Educa-
tion programs to give students the opportunity to develop critical skills for the workplace. “What this means for COC is getting recognition for programs that have been in existence for some time,” said Dr. Jerry Buckley, assistant superintendent and vice president of academic affairs. To help COC enhance its existing program, the State of California allocated $919,000 through the State Chancellor’s Office of California Community Colleges. “We’ve received money to increase the number of faculty who teach these disciplines and really grow the program,” Dr. Buckley said. Career and Technical Education offers courses in 26 programs, including culinary arts, emergency medical services, graphic design, nursing, computer networking, welding and architecture technology. The programs provide both classroom and experiential learning so students can develop required skills in the workplace while pursuing their personal aspirations. “When you look at some of these programs, whether it’s nursing or welding, it’s a good career choice that could lead to high paying jobs,” Dr. Buckley said. “A welder, for instance, can earn up to $100,000 a year depending on the specialization. And in many cases, this can be achieved with a two-year degree or less.” There are two new offerings this year: technical theater and construction technology. “The construction technology program is an expansion of our construction management program,” Dr. Buckley explained. “This is an entry level type of program that includes aspects of carpentry, masonry and other components that can eventually lead up to the construction manage-

Some programs offer a stepping stone to fouryear colleges, such as the medical laboratory technician training program. “A student in this program could transition to a four-year college where they could study to become a clinical scientist,” Dr. Buckley said. Career and Technical Education programs also give students the opportunity to expand on what they have already learned at COC. “For instance, you might start off as a welder but then decide you want to run your own welding business,” Dr. Buckley hypothesized. “So you can take
business classes and continue to grow your opportunities.” Additional courses in the program include office technology, real estate, land surveying, early childhood education, automotive technology, photography, animation, paralegal studies and industrial technology. The ultimate goal of COC’s Career and Technical Education programs is to offer students a range of choices so they can find the right fit for their career path. “The whole point is to find something you enjoy and be able to make money at it,” Dr. Buckley said. “In the next two months, people can check out our website for more information as we begin to roll out expanded information on each of these 26 programs.” For more information, visit https://www.canyons.edu/Offices/cte/Pages/default.aspx

Sweet Music at Master’s

S
anta Clarita’s best kept secret may be The Master’s University – hidden away in Placerita Canyon, where there are no curbs and no sidewalks in a land that time forgot that is still zoned for horses. In many ways, such “hiddenness” is a benefit, since teaching and learning are best practiced in quieter environments that allow knowledge to take root and thoughts to grow, said Dr. Paul Plew, Dean of the Department of Music at The Master’s University – TMU. “Education at TMU is about much more than education – it is about life,” Dr. Plew said. “Our students encourage one another. It’s not dog-eat-dog, but every student takes strides to better his or her craft, and they encourage one another.” One of TMU’s many outstanding academic units is the Department of Music. The National Association of Schools of Music accredits this department, which is housed in a 16,500-square-foot building with a recital hall/concert hall, 17 Wenger practice rooms, teaching studios and computer lab. The department offers an AVID certified audio tech degree in which the students learn their craft in a half-million-dollar recording studio under a Grammy-award-winning instructor. The 34 faculty members hold degrees from prestigious schools, such as Julliard, USC, UCLA and Indiana University. Some are professionals in the music or recording industry. “There are many wonderful schools of music in this country,” Dr. Plew said. “The best ones are known for the competition among
their stars for pre-eminence – somewhat unavoidable since composers write violin concertos to feature only one violin. TMU’s music department’s slant is slightly different.” At TMU, about two-thirds of the music students are from California, while others come from across the globe. For instance, a highly-skilled flutist has come all the way from Romania to study at TMU. “Alumni perform on Broadway, in the Chicago Lyric Opera, write music, work in post-production in Los Angeles, teach in our schools, and four lead the music in nearby churches,” Dr. Plew said. The Department of Music puts on public performances in the music recital hall every week. Theatre production has found a home in the music school, as well, and will present Jane Austen’s Northanger Abbey in March. John Rutter’s Requiem will be performed by a 120-voice choir and orchestra in the Hall of The Crucifixion-Resurrection at Forest Lawn in Glendale on April 12 and 13. The department also offers activities for youth in the community, including Songs of Summer, a performance workshop for singers, occurring June 19 through 23. In other upcoming performances, The Master’s Chorale, a 60-member, auditioned choir, will tour this summer in Israel for two weeks, and will then tour in Italy for one week. Additionally, the Women’s Chamber Choir will tour in northern California during Spring Break. Readers with more curiosity about the Department of Music, the concerts offered, and the many local individuals who perform in its ensembles, are invited to check its website: masters.edu/music.

Legacy Christian Academy’s Big Investment In Stem Includes New Innovation Lab F By Therese Edwards
rom SmartBoards in every classroom to student-issued Chromebooks and more, Legacy Christian Academy has a tradition of investing in technology that best serves the Academy’s mission of preparing today’s children for tomorrow’s success. “Legacy is incredibly committed to providing the best opportunities for our students to interact with STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics) in a way that is relevant, hands on and high tech. That’s why we invested so much into our new Innovation Lab, our new 3D printer, competitive and enrichment Robotics programs, digital-media training, computer classes for all grades, the best in classroom technology and so much more,” says Tim Borruel, Legacy’s co-founder and superintendent. Legacy didn’t earn the nickname “Legacy Tech” for nothing; the organization has a long history of STEM investments. The Valencia campus’s newest state-of-the-art addition, though, is one for the record books. The Academy’s brand new Innovation Lab, a dedicated multi-use space that looks more like it belongs in Silicon Valley than in a kinder-to-eighthgrade school, is where students from every class gather to learn 21st-century skills. “Legacy students begin to develop their technological fluency early on,” explains Borruel. “Our first grade students learn the ins and outs of Microsoft Word, third graders can chart profits and losses on Excel, a Legacy fifth grader could network your business’ computers and an LCA sixth grader could build you a desktop from scratch.” By middle school, a Legacy student is fluent in web design, graphic design and many advanced skills taught at places like MIT. The all-white Innovation lab was made with learning and collaboration in mind. In one corner are work stations and ready to charge handheld devices. Twenty-eight powerful computers with flat-panel LCD monitors cast a glow on the glass-like work surface, which can be raised up and down at the touch of a button. An 85-inch giant HD touchscreen, four giant 4K flatscreen TVs displaying student work, a document camera and other advanced teaching tools are at the ready. “Our Innovation Lab is like nothing else in Santa Clarita. Nearly a year in the making, we designed this space from the ground up to allow students to interact with technology in a way that inspires learning, creativity and imagination. Our kids feel as though they have stepped out of a traditional school building and into a space that looks more like an Apple Store!,” says Dr. Matt Northrop, Leg-

The Innovation Lab’s aesthetic is very similar to an Apple store, with white write-on walls for project mapping; hightech tables that can be raised and lowered so that students can work standing up or sitting down; wireless technology; and a fully-integrated system that allows teachers to easily access and share their instructional materials. acy principal. Cole Raschke, an eighth grader at Legacy, agrees. “What I like so much about the Innovation Lab is how it has been designed. We’re in rows, which makes it much easier to work with a partner. There’s so much more interaction. It’s Robotics Central in there, too! We set up our robots, test them, fix them and build them in the space.” “We wanted to create an innovative space where kids could be inspired,” says Borruel. “That was a priority.” “It needed to have flexible floor space where they could interact with technology and, just as important, each other,” says Northrop. “We don’t want this amazing technology to sit and collect dust; we worked hard to make it interactive for the kids so it could be used as a tool to prepare our students to be leaders and learners.” The efforts have been well received by Legacy parents and potential LCA families.
“Increasingly, we speak to potential parents who are concerned that their children won’t get the education and preparation they need to be competitive in a global marketplace,” explains Borruel. “That’s why they’re so drawn to Legacy and, particularly, our STEM focus that’s built into our advanced academic curriculum. Legacy’s STEM isn’t ‘just’ Science, Technology, Engineering and Math - it’s the application of those concepts in real-world scenarios that help our students hone their critical-thinking abilities. Legacy kids are problem solvers.” “With a project-focused curriculum, even the youngest child learns how abstract concepts become relevant to their lives,” explains Northrop. “It helps them grasp core concepts but, even better than that, it instills a deep passion for learning within them - a curiosity that encourages them to take on bigger challenges because they are so eager to engage in the material and seek out viable solutions to the world’s most pressing issues.”

Every one of Legacy’s Kindergarten-through-eighth-grade students has Computer class in the Innovation Lab.
Legacy recently acquired a 3D printer; the Academy, affectionately nicknamed “Legacy Tech,” deeply invests in STEM resources, curriculum and teacher training to best prepare students for the challenges and opportunities of the 21st century.

L
egacy Volleyball Club was established in 2008 to provide an opportunity for boys and girls to get an outstanding experience playing club volleyball. Reiterating the club’s mission statement, Coaching Director Walt Ker said, “Our hopes are that when a player finishes their club career with Legacy they will look back and say that was the most fun and positive sport experience they ever had.” With an extensive resume, including being an eight-time National Championship volleyball coach, Ker emphasized, “We at Legacy see ourselves primarily as a teaching club. We have 20 Club Teams (ages 10 to18), three Developmental Teams, and offer extensive third through sixth grade clinics, as well as five weeks of summer camps every year.” He explained that there are three main building blocks to his operation, and all three relate to the word “legacy,” which gave rise to the club’s name. First there is the legacy of legendary basketball coach John Wooden. Ker said that when he was growing up Wooden was his idol. “So I’ve tried to
model my coaching style after his. This includes offering instructional feedback in a positive fashion.” The second block of “legacy” relates to Ker’s family. All three of his sons were very successful volleyball players in high school and college, and all three work in the family business at Legacy Volleyball Club. The youngest son, Jamey Ker, is Co-Operations Supervisor and coaches two Legacy teams. The middle son, Kevin Ker, coaches two other teams, and the oldest son, Tony Ker, is the other Co-Operations Supervisor – though he often has to work remotely for Legacy because he is now an assistant volleyball coach at UCLA. Legacy has recently added another member to their family, with Katie Ker, recently married to Kevin, working as the Administrator in the club. The third building block at Legacy is its intensive coach training. “We hire really good people and train them to be really outstanding coaches,” Walt Ker said. “We make them professional, educated and effective. And several of our coaches have gone on to coach at the college level.” The proof that the Legacy Volleyball Club program is working is in its growth, of course, but it is more obviously apparent in the success of its

athletes. And this begins early. “The younger players that have joined Legacy programs in junior high have gone on to experience success their freshman year in high school by becoming starters on the freshman team and sometimes on the JV team,” Ker said. “This past year we had two freshman who started on the varsity volleyball teams that shared the Foothill League championship!” The success of players from Legacy programs often continues throughout their high school years. “Of the seven first team All-Foothill League and AllSCV girls volleyball players in 2016, six were also Legacy volleyball players,” Ker said proudly. “And players from Legacy have been the Foothill League MVPs for the last five years.” Ker is excited about the Legacy connection in college volleyball, too. “In the last six years we’ve averaged 12 players per year that have gone on to play college volleyball. And in 2016 we had 15 who went on to play college volleyball.” Legacy Volleyball Club is located at 28369 Constellation Road in Valencia. Dave worked as a medic/EMT for 11 years. While taking a break from work he fell into this career by happenstance. He shadowed a friend who was a branch manager and he realized he could help people financially as well. He liked the challenge of finding the right loan for individuals and setting them up in a great way, maybe even better than they expected. His motto is “when you have peace of mind in finances you have peace of mind in the other areas of your life.” He returned to Denver and became licensed right away. After working as a loan officer assistant for seven months he decided he wanted to go full-time. A friend recommended American Pacific Mortgage, which landed him at American Family Funding’s Colorado branch. He really enjoys building relationships with his clients.

merican Family Funding (AFF) has a strong belief system that has been the heart of their success for the past 23 years. “Whether you use us or not, we want to be a resource for the biggest purchase of your life,” said Fred Arnold, mortgage advisor and Santa Clarita branch manager. AFF, a division of American Pacific Mortgage, has been operational since 1994. With a dedicated staff of 20 originator and processors, the company offers a variety of mortgage solutions, including Federal Housing Administration, Jumbo, United States Department of Agriculture, Veterans Affairs and Conventional loans. “We are a purchase focus company where we enjoy working with perspective buyers or those looking to buy their first homes,” said Jake Young, AFF mortgage advisor. “We also help with refinancing current mortgages and reverse mortgages.” AFF currently funds $7.5 billion in residential mortgages each year alone. “When you own a business, these days everyone wants a quick buck or instant success, but we built a company one loan at a time, one relationship at a time and one pre-approval at a time,” said Fred Arnold, AFF mortgage advisor and branch manager. “It’s allowed us to build a foundation where we built an anchor with the homeowners and the community.” When applying for a home loan, the application process can take between 30 to 45 days, according to Young. “We also have a program called “Keys on Time” where we can get a customer pre-approved before they even write an offer on a house,” Young said. “Once a customer gets a pre-approved letter, they can close in 15 to 18 days.” Tami Gearhart, AFF office manager of 16 years, says that AFF has a unique processing team that helps the homebuyer get a loan approved quicker. “We have a team of five processors and an opener who opens the files, gets the discloser out to the client and when the files come back, we run the reports and get the file to the submitter and an underwriter,” she said. “Once it’s approved, we work on the conditions. It’s a much smoother process.” AFF also offers special programs such as the Star program, where fees are cut to help police officers, teachers, firefighters and first responders with their down payments and closing costs. The AFF Veterans Affairs program helps veterans purchase a home with zero money down. “A lot of times veterans don’t know what they have, so we try and be a knowledge source so we get out into the community with the realtors and let the veterans know that there are resources [available for them],” said David Cantrell, AFF operations manager. Arnold says that the housing outlook for this year
is currently a buyer’s market and that sales are at risk. He also noted that prices have gone up 1 percent since the election and that the economy will eventually become more active and more consumer and business focused. “We need to be on top of our game so that [the loan] is pre-approved and when [a potential homebuyer] makes the offer that it’s more accepted because the seller that’s making the offer can know that it will close on time,” Arnold said. Arnold also says that he sees an even mix of singles and families that are millennials, first time buyers and baby boomers buying homes in today’s market. “We’re seeing more millennials purchasing after they secure a good job and the traditional first time buyers starting families that are seeing interest rate rise,” Arnold said. “We’re seeing both dynamics that I never saw in the 1990’s and 2000’s.
We’re also seeing baby boomers that are contemplating moving into a new location with offered lifestyles or down scaling by a 1,000-square-feet.” AFF is also a strong supporter of giving back to the community, such as donating and sponsoring for local high school sports teams and fundraisers for the Valley Industry Association Education Foundation and the Child and Family Center. “We encourage all of our team members to be involved [in the community],” Arnold said. “If you want a company that’s built to last, you have to be involved.” At the end of the day, Young says AFF is all about the interaction with the customer and satisfaction. “We have a lot of repeat and referral customers and we all take pride on building personal relationships with them,” he said.
“We encourage all of our team members to be involved in the community.”

Valencia Acura Infused a Friendship Culture Over the Past Two Decades W By Jim Walker
hen Don and Cheri Fleming took ownership of Valencia Acura in 1997 it had been, to put it mildly, a bit under-performing. However, the couple quickly turned things around under their credo, mission and mantra of “More than a Dealership, it’s a Friendship.” Most importantly, this then-new direction included revamping the overall culture to be more welcoming to clients. But it also included developing programs that increased staff camaraderie – which not only enhanced the positive atmosphere, it also helped retain experienced employees. Today, Valencia Acura is one of the best-loved auto dealerships in the Santa Clarita Valley and one of the top-performing Acura dealerships nationwide. This is certainly due, in part, to the value of the Acura brand. But none of this would have been possible without Friendship. “We call ourselves the ‘Friendship Dealership,’” said Cheri Fleming. “Valencia Acura has strived to infuse a Friendship culture over the past two decades, by treating customers the way we ourselves would want to be treated. It’s the right place to come.” “‘Friendship Dealership’ means a lot to us. It’s our way of doing business,” Don Fleming said. “And our friends have grown into the thousands over the past 20 years.” As proof of the value of Friendship, Valencia Acura is one of Acura’s highest-ranking dealerships in customer satisfaction, and one of the highest in the nation for customer loyalty. More than 75 percent of Valencia Acura’s business is repeat business or comes via referrals from satisfied customers. And Santa Clarita Valley residents recently named Valencia Acura Best New Car Dealership – for the 13th time! Valencia Acura has won the Acura Precision Team Dealer of Distinction award 11 times, won Acura’s Council of Excellence award 13 times, and the SCV Chamber of Commerce Medium Business of the Year award (2001) and Large Business of the Year award (2016). In 2006 Cheri Fleming was named Dealer of the Year by the American International Automobile Dealer Association, with the award presented by Newsweek magazine. With and beyond their business, Don and Cheri Fleming are true “friends” of the Santa Clarita Valley. Both are actively involved in the local community in numerous ways – socially, civically and charitably. And they have been deeply involved with charity fundraising and volunteerism in the SCV for many years. In fact, this community spirit earned them the SCV Man and Woman of the Year awards in 2004. Just a few highlights of Don Fleming’s extensive community involvement include being current vice president of the West Ranch Town Council and a member since 2006, being co-chairman and founding board member of the Santa Clarita Valley Economic Development Corporation, a director of the

Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Foundation, and president of the Santa Clarita Auto Dealers Association. ”We believe that when you take money out of a town, you ought to give some back,” Don Fleming said. “It’s really a good feeling that, in some small way, we have helped these Santa Clarita Valley charities for 20 years.” And he added, “With the SCVEDC, our whole goal is to bring quality jobs to the valley. And as far as the dealers association, it has been my pleasure to be on that board for 17 years and its president for 15.” Over the years, Cheri Fleming has been passionately involved with numerous local charitable organizations including the Child & Family Center, American Cancer Society and Arthritis Foundation. However, she has been most deeply involved with Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital and Soroptimist International. She has been on the hospital’s board of directors since 2015 and was a chairman of the Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Health Foundation. She is actively involved in the capital campaign for the hospital’s new patient tower, with Valencia Acura having pledged $100,000 toward it.
Cheri Fleming has been a member and president of Soroptimist International of the Santa Clarita Valley, and continues to be a member of the Soroptimist International of the Greater Santa Clarita Valley. She has also been president and secretary/treasurer of Soroptimist International of the Americas. As president of SIA, she traveled the world on a mission to improve the lives of women and girls. “For me, the dealership has become a conduit to the community, allowing countless opportunities to give back and make a difference,” said Cheri Fleming. “And while my professional work life focuses on helping people get behind the wheel and drive, my philanthropic work measures distance in the footprints I am able to make toward bettering the lives of others. “As an independent, family-owned dealership, we chose from the very beginning to focus on what really matters to us – relationships and community – and have remained deeply rooted in that belief system ever since.” “More than a Dealership, it’s a Friendship” remains as true today as it did 20 years ago. For more information visit www.valenciaacura. com or call 661-255-3000. The dealership is located at 23955 Creekside Road, Valencia, CA 91355.

On February 16, 2017, Valencia Acura was the first dealership in the nation to offer a customer test drive event for Acura’s NSX supercar. Owners Don and Cheri Fleming fueled the excitement by hosting the experiential event, which included an orientation of the hybrid technology, 11.2 mile test drive, and an opportunity to use the NSX configurator located in their showroom to virtually construct each driver’s dream car.

Henry Mayo’s Trauma Services Provide a Comprehensive Level of Care

ith only fourteen trauma hospitals in Los Angeles County, Santa Clarita is fortunate to have one in its own backyard - Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital. “The Trauma Program is responsible for seeing a special subset of patients that come in who have traumatic injuries,” explains Katie Cummings, Trauma and Injury Prevention Coordinator for Trauma Services at Henry Mayo. “Los Angeles County helps us define what traumatic injuries are, but generally they involve a car/motorcycle crash, many acts of violence like assault, stabbings, gunshot wounds, and falls from heights – things of that nature are all considered trauma injuries, and those are the types of patients that we specialize in caring for.” Designated as a rural trauma hospital in 1984, Henry Mayo was upgraded to a Level 2 trauma hospital by the LA County Emergency Medical Services Agency in 1992. “The American College of Surgeons surveys the hospital every 3 years to ensure that the trauma center meets all the criteria listed in the Resources for Optimal Care of the Injured Patient,” says Trauma Program Manager Gilda Cruz-Manglapus. One requirement includes having the trauma surgeons and operating room staff
in house 24 hours a day so that they are able to attend to the trauma patients as soon as they arrive. Cruz-Manglapus adds, “Really what we’re after is to make sure that we demonstrate the high quality of care given to the severely injured patient population that are brought to Henry Mayo, and lives are saved because of the commitment of administration, physicians, nurses and ancillary staff to providing the highest and most comprehensive level of care and support to the critically injured patients.” Henry Mayo typically sees an average of 1,000 trauma patients per year, but its comprehensive level of care doesn’t only include those who find themselves in the Emergency Room with traumatic injuries. Cruz-Manglapus oversees the care of the patients during their stay at Henry Mayo, while Cummings supervises various programs that focus on injury prevention and care. One such program called “Stop the Bleed” is a nationwide campaign “launched by the White House
in 2015 and supported by group leaders from law enforcement, the federal government and the medical community to improve survivability from active shooter and mass casualty events. The goal is to educate the public in tourniquet use and other tools to stop life threatening bleeding,” says Cummings. Because bystanders are typically the first on an accident scene, if they were to properly apply a tourniquet to an injured person, they could possibly help stop the victim’s bleeding until medical care arrives. “You can die from arterial bleeding in a matter of minutes,” explains Cummings, “however, if you have a tourniquet available it can save a life. Our participation in this nationwide campaign set out to educate the public on the use of tourniquets in case members of our community are ever involved in an active shooter, natural disaster or mass casualty event. The public would be able to help save lives.”

ith stroke being the nation’s 5th leading cause of death, it’s reassuring to know that Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital’s Advanced Primary Stroke Center is there for stroke patients. “We ensure that when a patient comes into the emergency room they get appropriate treatment,” says Lorisha Rathnum-Clark, RN Stroke Navigator for the Hospital. “There is treatment available for stroke, and, as soon as they start having symptoms, they need to call 911 and get treatment as soon as possible. Our paramedics are trained to identify stroke symptoms, and they know what to do.”
ta to Henry Mayo since we are specialized in caring for these patients,” says Rathnum-Clark. “There is great team work between the paramedics and the ER staff. Once a stroke victim is identified, the ER staff is notified, who then alerts the stroke team, which is ready and waiting for the patient when he or she arrives.” On average, Henry Mayo’s Advanced Primary Stroke Center sees 350 to 400 patients per year. Each patient is given the kind of treatment expected from a hospital that has received the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association’s Get with the Guidelines -Stroke Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award consecutively for the last four years.
One such treatment according to Rathnum-Clark is tissue plasminogen activator, or tPA. “The medication gravitates toward the clot and breaks it up, allowing the blood and oxygen supply to flow,” explains Rathnum-Clark. She recalls one patient who came into the hospital within 30 minutes of having a stroke and was given tPA before being transferred to another facility in order to have the clot removed. Within two months the patient had recovered 100 percent and regained use of his left side, left eye and was once again able to speak. When administered in a timely matter, tPA can help improve a patient’s chances of recovery. “Henry Mayo is a primary stroke center. Therefore, paramedics will transport patients within Santa Clari-

Specialized and advanced techniques are utilized to assist in finding the source of the problem and treating the whole body. Dr. Chenaur explains her choice to focus on a holistic approach to care by noting that, “Traditional medicine treats the symptoms of an existing disease process. By not addressing the cause, the body remains in a state of imbalance and disease which allows it to worsen over time, leading to chronic and degenerative diseases. All medications, including over the counter, have side effects; this means that they do some sort of harm to the body by putting it in a state of imbalance and disrupting its natural healing ability. Maintaining the body’s proper function via a holistic approach assists with chronic health issues such as fatigue, hormonal and sugar imbalances, weight loss, headaches, allergies.” Preventive care is also a very important factor in Dr. Chenaur’s practice because many people prefer prevention over the treatment of an illness. Valencia Spine and Nerve Institute’s patients can choose to participate in a maintenance program that allows them to receive “balancing” at least twice a month at an affordable price. These maintenance programs have resulted in patients not getting ill as often and in shorter healing times when they do become ill.

Supporting partnerships with community-based organizations is at the heart of Kaiser Permanente’s Community Benefit Grant program. The program provides financial support to local nonprofits committed to early detection and treatment of chronic diseases, improving physical and nutritional health, and expanding access to care for lower-income and uninsured individuals. “We provide more than $62,000 in Community Benefit grants on a yearly basis to organizations in the Santa Clarita Valley that are focused on addressing critical public health needs,” says Dr. Raigosa. “Some of our grantees include the Child & Family Center, Habitat for Humanity, Northeast Valley Health Corporation, Bridge to Home, Dan Watson/The Signal Kaiser Permanente physicians, employees and family members gather at the con- the Santa Clarita Valley Senior Center and the struction site for Santa Clarita Medical Offices 2, opening in early 2018. Boys & Girls Club of Santa Clarita Valley.” Kaiser Permanente also sponsors programs that promote a healthy lifestyle, including the “Final Mile Challenge,” a Santa Clarita Marathon school-based program. “I’m a competitive runner, so I look forward to our annual participation with the marathon. My wife and kids also participated this year in the Final Mile Challenge. It’s a fun way for us to engage with our community and be active together,” says Dr. Raigosa. To keep up with the growing community, Kaiser Permanente’s Canyon Country medical offices opened in 2008 to support and enhance the services already being provided on the other side of the valley. Payman Roshan, Senior Vice President and Area Manager, Kaiser Permanente Panorama City says, “Our goal in Santa Clarita has always been to provide as many services as possible locally, so our members don’t have to travel to the San Fernando Valley or beyond for primary and specialty care.” With that in mind, Kaiser Permanente purchased the old Borax headquarters on Tourney Road. “We are currently transforming the building,” continues Roshan, “So that we can offer our members in Santa Clarita more specialty services closer to home.” Members will notice a dramatic difference upon entering the new medical office building, scheduled to open in early 2018. “We’re presenting an evolved design, with a very welcoming aesthetic that doesn’t look or feel like your typical clinical setting,” adds Roshan. He says the 64,000 square foot medical office represents Kaiser Permanente’s evolution toward creating highly efficient, environmentally-friendly facilities designed to improve the member experience. The new design will enable greater connectivity with physicians using advanced technology. Open-space waiting areas will educate, entertain, and reinforce Kaiser Permanente’s commitment to total health. “Some of our technology enhancements will include the option for remote check-in via the Kaiser Permanente app, and text message alerts notifying you when your provider is ready so you’re not glued to a waiting room chair,” says Roshan. “If your physician decides that you require an additional consultation with a specialist, video consults will be available on-demand so you won’t have to make an additional appointment, saving you valuable time.” Kaiser Permanente Santa Clarita Medical Offices 2 is scheduled to open in early 2018, offering specialty services such as Cardiology, Hematology, Oncology, Neurology, Orthopedics, Podiatry, Urology and more—plus several outpatient surgical suites. Other services to be offered in the new building include Laboratory, Pharmacy and Urgent Care services to further enhance the patient care experience. ith the goal to prepare students for 21st Century careers, the Albert Einstein Academy is a family of public charter schools that provides students with a classical, college-preparatory education, focused on letters, arts and sciences. The academy gives students the tools to develop their intellectual, artistic, physical, technological and social competencies – ultimately preparing them for the next phase of their education. “We pride ourselves on small class sizes, a diverse student population, exceptional teachers, challenging classes and individualized learning,” said Maggie Ford, Chief Executive Officer. “The Albert Einstein Academy community is a supportive environment that educates students’ minds and inspires their hearts.” Serving students in grades K-12, the academy has two campuses in Santa Clarita, including an elementary school and secondary school. The secondary school opened in 2010 and the elementary school began its operations on Orchard Village Road in 2015. There is also a campus in Beverly Hills and a campus in Agua Dulce. The secondary school, serving students in grades 7 through 12, offers students a comprehensive college-preparatory academic program, a full range of CIF sports, an active student social life and community involvement opportunities. During the first two years of operation, the secondary school earned full accreditation from the Western Association of Schools and Colleges, gained admission into the California Interscholastic Federation, and received a five-year charter renewal from the district. The elementary school, serving grades kindergarten through 6, provides students with a rigorous curriculum that is STEAM-focused. STEAM is an educational philosophy that emphasizes science, technology and engineering. “Our school has expanded the focus to include the arts,” Ford said. STEAM is an acronym for science, technology, engineering, arts and math. “It is also a philosophy for teaching relevant
concepts and skills in science and technology through engineering and the arts,” Ford explained. “Math is the common element that supports the components.” This philosophy also goes hand in hand with the academy’s project based learning approach, which is designed to immerse students into real-world problems and challenges where they can explore grade level concepts and develop deeper knowledge. “It gives context and relevance to the skills that scholars are expected to master, which in turn builds interest,” Ford said. “When the projects are

aligned with state standards, teachers can deliver active instruction in core subjects that will support our scholars’ academic growth.” Most of the academy’s students are from the greater Santa Clarita area, with other students from the Antelope Valley and the San Fernando Valley. The academy is a college preparatory program, so many students take Advanced Placement classes. “The students who come to the Albert Einstein
Academy are looking for more than the traditional district can provide,” Ford noted. “We have students and teachers from many different countries and cultures, and this environment helps our students become well-rounded individuals who are prepared to succeed in college and in their careers.” The Albert Einstein Academy offers a top-notch arts program, which includes fine arts, drama and theater and music. Additionally, all students participate in foreign language instruction beginning in kindergarten, and many students also engage in the academy’s comprehensive sports programs. “Perhaps some of the most unique aspects of our school are the small class sizes and accessibility of our teachers and staff,” Ford said. “Students and families look to the Albert Einstein Academy for our small-school environment. All academy students know that their teachers want them to succeed, and that they will go the extra mile to offer help and guidance.” Aside from their school studies, academy students are involved in numerous charitable causes throughout the community. For instance, each year, students in grades K through 12 complete more than 15,000 hours of community service to local nonprofit groups. “They have worked to support the homeless shelter, the Santa Clarita Valley Food Pantry and other local nonprofit organizations,” Ford said. Additionally, “our students participate in Box City and Relay for Life each year. We have raised more than $70,000 for the American Cancer Society through Relay for Life.” The ultimate goal of the Albert Einstein Academy is for students to graduate with a deep understanding of the relationships among disciplines – as well as the ability to continuously develop their intellectual curiosity as globally aware, civic-minded individuals. “We welcome students of all ethnic, religious, socioeconomic and gender backgrounds,” Ford said. “Our students thrive in this environment, and our exceptional academic programs lead them to college and beyond. Above all, we are a family.” For more information, call 234-650-4260 or visit www.ealas.org.

Embracing Technology to Help Patients

A
n audiologist for more than two decades, Dr. Patrice Rifkind has earned a reputation for focusing on each individual patient to find the best solutions for their hearing needs. “It’s not like a medical office where you go and get your treatment and you’re done,” said Dr. Rifkind, owner of Audiology Associates in Valencia. “I work with each patient on all different sources of communication with the goal to help them hear better.” Thanks to modern technology, new hearing aids have made great strides in the industry. “A lot of hearing aids now connect to iPhones without wires,” Dr. Rifkind explained. “We can connect the hearing aids directly to the phone, so if it rings, they hear it. And when they say ‘hello’ they can hear the person on the other line. The sound they hear from the phone is amplified to meet their needs.” There are other benefits and features of this new technology. “For instance, you’re standing in a super noisy place with your wife and she’s trying to talk to you quietly without telling everyone in the area,” Dr. Rifkind hypothesized. “You can hand the phone over to your wife and using the microphone of the iPhone, she can whisper in your ear and nobody else hears it.” Dr. Rifkind especially enjoys introducing seniors to this modern technology. “We get seniors who will come in with iPhones and don’t know how to use them,” she said. “I
help them learn how to download the app, which is free. I’ll take the time to help them with this technology, which is above and beyond what we’re doing communication wise, but improves their quality of life.” When Dr. Rifkind first started out as an audiologist, almost all hearing aids were analog. “Now they’re all digital,” she said. “The processing of the sounds is different. Instead of grouping all sounds, we are selectively amplifying the frequency and loudness the listener needs. We can adjust devices like an equalizer on a stereo.” These hearing aids are tailored for each individual and their specific hearing needs. “I recently set up a special program for a woman who goes to a quilting class and she needed to hear others in the class,” Dr. Rifkind said. “We also helped a composer with his hearing aids, to make a special music program to allow him to hear the pure tone of one piano.” Today’s hearing aids are also much more comfortable and aesthetic then they have been in the past. “They don’t look like your grandfather’s hearing aids,” Dr. Rifkind said. “When I first started everyone was wearing large hearing aids in the ear or wrapped around the ear, and only people who really needed them were wearing them,” Dr. Rifkind recalled. Now, some hearing aids can be practically invisible depending on the patient’s needs, she said. “We have some people who have barely any hearing loss, but they do very well with hear-

ing aids that they wouldn’t have considered 20 years ago.” In addition to running her business, Dr. Rifkind also helps people behind-the-scenes. “We have a special program coordinated by the Veteran’s Administration recently due to high volumes of veterans needing help with hearing care,” she said. “We also give away lots of earplugs every year for people at events like concerts and gun shows.” There are times when a person has special needs, such as a severe illness or gaps in insurance and income. “We have been able to sometimes reduce the cost or offer no cost devices to help them,” Dr. Rifkind said. Over the years, she has helped “thousands and thousands” of patients. The youngest was three months old, and the oldest was 105. “We have a great staff here – I couldn’t do this without them,” Dr. Rifkind emphasized. In her latest endeavor, she recently authored a book, “Hear Better: A Guide to Finding the Best Hearing Health Care.” “Hearing is one of your five senses and you only have five,” Dr. Rifkind said. “It’s your input to the world, your ability to communicate, continue staying gainfully employed, healthy, and having good relationships.” Above all, “I love what I do – to be able to put hearing aids on someone who’s really struggling and have them hear better,” she said. Several Generations of Assistance League Life Changers By Jackie Hamby

eens in Santa Clarita are busier now than they have ever been. They work hard to maintain the grades necessary to be accepted into competitive colleges. From early on, after-school sports and other activities have been part of their lives and take up an enormous amount of time. In addition, they are expected to be well-rounded citizens, giving back to their communities. It can be overwhelming for both teens and parents. Few nonprofit organizations have volunteers that span generations. Assistance League Santa Clarita members and Assisteens, the teen auxiliary of Assistance League, are an exception. We have been partners in volunteering for over 25 years and all agree that we’re better together! Together, we witness the smiles of the students who receive new clothing and shoes to allow them to focus on learning. Together, we make treats for homebound seniors and bring smiles to the residents of the Santa Clarita Convalescent Hospital. Together, we bring joy to the residents of the Los Angeles Residential Community (LARC) with a dance party that has been a long-standing program for our organization. Assisteens are likely to say that their favorite program is the Foster Care backpack program. They fill backpacks with essential items that a child entering the foster care system will need. Clothing, school supplies, personal hygiene items and a cozy blanket, handmade by Assistance League members are included. Assisteens have become an important part of our largest fundraiser, Assistance League Resale. They have the energy and enthusiasm that it takes to help process the many donations that come into our store. Since we are 100% operated by member volunteers, keeping up with all those donations is an enormous task. Having our Assisteens working by our side on weekends and during the summer has provided a much-needed boost to getting donations on the floor and into the hands of our wonderful customers. This increases the amount we can give back to our community through our programs. All in all, our inter-generational partnership makes a genuine and heartfelt impact! Assistance League members and Assisteens pose with backpacks they filled with essentials that will be given to adolescents going to foster homes. Santa Clarita says, “We are working hard to further incorporate these dynamic teens in all of our programs and fundraisers. These students add so much to our organization and provide new perspective to keep us on top of ever-changing technology and ideas in volunteering.” Vice Chair of Assisteens, Erin Meottel, tells us that, “Volunteering with Assisteens is such a rewarding experience. I love giving back to my community in any way I can and none of it would be possible without the help of our Assistance League members who are all so kind and supportive of everything we do in Assisteens.” Helping students succeed in school, bringing joy to those in need, letting children know they are not forgotten, Assisteens and Assistance League are volunteering together for a better tomorrow. www.assistanceleaguesantaclarita.org. Lifestyles Dance Studio 84:
In Step for More than 4 Decades By Alicia Doyle
I
n business for more than four decades, Dance Studio 84 has earned a reputation as the longest operating dance studio in the Santa Clarita Valley that offers instruction in many styles, from ballet to hip hop. Voted “Santa Clarita’s Best Dance Studio” more than six times, this business has thrived over the years primarily through word of mouth. “With decades of experience in educating in the art of dance, we feel we provide the very finest in the Santa Clarita Valley,” said Carla Hunt Smallwood, owner and director of the studio for the last 30 years. “Our staff is extremely experienced in both performance and education.” Dance Studio 84 is known for being well-organized, she said, and providing a wonderful, clean, age-appropriate, positive environment. “We cater to a wide variety – from the once a week recreational dancer to those training in a pre-professional program,” Smallwood explained. To that end, Dance Studio 84 offers instruction in various styles of dance – including tap, jazz, lyrical, contemporary, musical theater and tumbling – for students age 2 to adult. “With a focus on teaching the correct technique for each style of dance, we also provide performance opportunities for all our students,” Smallwood said. These performances include June recitals, presenting a full-length ballet, “The Nutcracker,” in December; as well as many community performances throughout the year. “We attend competitions; however, it is not our main focus,” Smallwood said. “We strive to train well-rounded dancers, to share our passion for dance with our students and their families.” While the majority of students are children and teens, “we have a few adult classes as well,” Smallwood noted. Adult classes include tap, jazz, stretch and hip hop. With a 9,000-square-foot state-of-the-art facility with five different dance rooms, and more than 100 classes per week for all ages and abilities in a large variety of styles, “we work to find the perfect class for each dancer,” she said. Dance Studio 84 is also known for its philanthropic work in the local community. For instance, the studio has aligned itself with causes to support the Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital Guild, Boys and Girls Club, Special Olympics, SCV Rotary Club, Child and Family Center, California Police Youth Group, St. Jude’s, City of Hope, American

Santa Clarita Church of Christ Focuses on Opportunities to Help Others Church congregation fosters environment of giving By Martha Garcia

lex and Tara Soto host a Christmas party every year for their friends. This past Christmas, the couple decided to forgo that tradi-
tion, instead hosting a concert for the residents of the Santa Clarita Convalescent Home. The couple hired a jazz band, hoping to spread the Christmas spirit to the residents, a population that is often forgotten. They invited fellow church members and handed out blankets, beanies and socks. This is one of many examples of community work in Santa Clarita done by members of the Santa Clarita Church of Christ. “We wanted to take an opportunity to encourage other people,” said Alex Soto. Most members actively look for ways to give back. Santa Clarita Church of Christ often hosts large church-wide outreach events. Other events are organized by smaller groups within the church. Many outreach efforts grow naturally, spurred by the desire to help others. The church focuses on community outreach locally and abroad. Projects include outreach to foster children in the local Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS), volunteering at Carousel Ranch, work at Bridge2Home, serving Santa Clarita’s homeless, and annual mission trips to support churches in Russia. “There is a significant segment of the population that has needs and we believe we should give and help meet those needs,” said Mike Hammer, long-time attendee of the SC Church of Christ. “Jesus’ ministry was about giving to others. Orphans, foster kids, it’s no fault of their own, but they have challenging lives and we have the ability to let them know people care.” Hammer was a part of mission trips to Russia in prior years. He felt it was as important to move beyond the U.S. and help people in other areas of the world, as it is to help those nearby.

Connecting with the community Is it the church that inspires the people to do good in the community or do inspired people seem to be drawn to the church? It’s a case of the chicken or the egg. In any event, Santa Clarita Church of Christ offers myriad opportunities for members to help others. Jennifer and Tim O’Connor helped organize this year’s toy drive and Christmas party for DCFS foster children. Under their direction, volunteers collected nearly 1,000 toys. They also organize a food drive for the local food pantry every year.
“It’s always been on our hearts to help out,” said Jennifer O’Connor. “There are families in our own backyard in great need.” More than 300 children attended this year’s Christmas party, which included catered food, treats, games and face painting. Children were given the change to pick out their own toys. “We have a beautiful church family that wants to make this world a better place,” said O’Connor. “We try to look at Jesus’ example. He was giving and serving, loving and going way beyond what he could do. That’s who I like to follow, and would love to do even more.”

here’s no doubt the Santa Clarita Valley is one of the most desirable places to live in Southern California. In 2006 the city of Santa Clarita was ranked by Money Magazine as 18th in the top 100 places to live in the United States. People are moving to the area in droves and The Nicole Stinson Group works tirelessly to be sure clients find the right home in the neighborhood that best suits their needs. Broker/Owner Nicole Stinson has been optimizing real estate transactions in the Santa Clarita Valley since 2008. When asked what sets them apart from other real estate companies, Stinson says she and her team pride themselves on providing a personal touch. “Although we are a high-volume company,” said Stinson, “our priority is the human element. Our goal is to make a positive difference in our clients’ lives. They are people whose lives will be impacted by the decisions they make. So whether they’re buying or selling, we handle them with care. Our clients become clients for life.” Stinson believes communication is the foundation of a good relationship. The first thing her Realtors do is listen to their clients. “When people talk about a real estate experience that didn’t go well,” she said, “the common denominator is often poor communication between them and their Realtor. At the Nicole Stinson Group we believe that establishing clear expectations from the start sets the stage for a successful transaction.” Every team member with The Nicole Stinson Group is updated regularly on every file so that each knows the details and particulars. “At any time,” added Stinson, “we have our clients’ best interests at heart. As partners in the transaction with our seller and/or buyer, we believe remaining close to the process is critical so that we can keep our seller and buyer informed along the way. Clear communication from the beginning is key.” The Realtors at The Nicole Stinson Group have extensive knowledge of the SCV real estate mar-
ket. They are always informed about what properties are available and they always know the most recent fair market values. They listen closely and take a proactive approach to each client’s needs. “This makes our team the perfect choice, whether you are buying or selling a home,” Stinson said. “Our knowledge, experience and dedication consis-

tently generate successful outcomes. We are committed to producing fast results while meeting all your needs.” Referrals are an integral part of the success of any business, and The Nicole Stinson Group has built strong relationships within the community, ensuring their stability. The team members have extensive experience handling sensitive property transactions. Because of this, attorneys and CPAs regularly refer The Nicole Stinson Group to clients who need assistance with challenging sales such as probate, divorce, trustee sales and wealth management. “The Nicole Stinson Group believes in helping
families find a home to grow in, and in helping sellers get the greatest amount of money in the shortest amount of time,” Stinson said. “And we also believe in reaching out to the community, to those in need. When our clients list or buy homes with The Nicole Stinson Group, we will donate five percent of our gross commission to the charity of their choice.” Nicole Stinson is a strong believer in volunteerism and has been an active supporter of nonprofit organizations within the community for decades. “I love giving back to my community, and try and help local nonprofits by volunteering or attending and supporting their events,” she said. She is founder and chairperson of what is now the 5th SCV Annual Charity Chili Cook-Off, scheduled this month. The event, which is one of the most popular in the SCV, was born of an idea scribbled on a napkin. The first year the event drew in massive amounts of community and corporate support and raised $5,000 for local charities. Since then the event has grown, raising over $40,000 in 2016. “We hope to raise $65,000 this year,” said Stinson proudly. Stinson is also Program Director for the Women’s Council of Realtors of the Santa Clarita Valley and sits on that board. This is her first term. She is now serving her fourth year on the SRAR (Southland Regional Association of Realtors – SCV Division) Council. Nicole Stinson makes no secret of the fact that she loves being involved on the back end and giving back to the board, saying, “I love helping add value to our members. I also enjoy fighting for the rights of homeowners.” The Nicole Stinson Group offices are located at 28100 Bouquet Canyon Road, #214, Santa Clarita, CA 91350. Green Thumb Nursery Maintains Strong Roots in Santa Clarita Valley By Cully Schneider

trolling down the aisles of Newhall’s Green Thumb Nursery you quickly become enveloped in all that is gardening. From potted French Lavender to supplies for garden koi ponds, Green Thumb has plenty to keep an avid gardener busy. Started in 1947, Green Thumb planted its roots with its very first store in Canoga Park. The nursery was founded by Dale Bergquist, who decided to move to California after serving in the Army during WWII. Bergquist had been working at a seed company when he convinced his co-worker Errol Newton to purchase a nursery with him. Decades later, Green Thumb is still family owned and operated and has grown to a total of five stores, with the Newhall location opening in 1970. Century 21 Troop Real Estate Serves Its Clients On a Global Platform By Cully Schneider
L
ocated near Santa Clarita’s City Hall, and with additional offices all around Ventura County, Century 21 Troop Real Estate has made a name for itself in the real estate industry. The company continues to serve its customers’ needs with the addition of a globally recognized brand. The decision to merge Troop Real Estate with Century 21 has given this local business the opportunities and brand recognition that will help better serve its clients. George Morris, CEO and founder of Utah’s Century 21 Everest Realty Group since its inception in 2009, brings years of experience operating a successful Century 21 independently owned brokerage. His partnership with his best friend of 23 years John Ciet and Troop Real Estate’s founder Brian Troop to co-own the Santa Clarita office under the Century 21 brand was a perfect match. “We were looking to obviously get our horizons a little further out of state from the Utah standpoint and looking for an owner/operator who had the same integrity, values, belief systems – the way they treated a client from a client centric standpoint, also from an agent standpoint how they were treated, how they were trained and how they were coached, the environment, the culture, the leadership, and we found that Brian Troop and Troop Real Estate had those same components; almost it was as if we were looking in a mirror,” explains Morris about the merger. In April of last year the merger was complete. Morris describes it as “an extraordinary experience at the highest level.” He remarks, “Our organization, although it is a real estate company, is ultimately a personal development company…as an owner in the organization our job is to develop our agents so that they can then be the very best they need to be for their client or the people in which we serve in Santa Clarita and the surrounding areas.” Clients benefit from the Century 21 collaboration by having access to a globally recognized brand with excellent tools in the real estate industry. Paul Gonzales,

Group photo of the staff at Century 21 Troop Real Estate. the Santa Clarita office’s branch manager further explains, “Being a part of the Century 21 brand for clients is very advantageous because of the corporation’s ability to virtually give technology that’s second to none on a global platform.” An additional benefit for customers is the care Century 21 Troop Real Estate takes with developing and nurturing its agents’ abilities to serve the client. “What really kind of makes us different is we’re also the only company that has life coaches in our management team…so we are a personal development and sales company that happens to do real estate. We coach each and every one of our employ-
ees, our Realtors, in their personal development as people and realtors.” According to Gonzales, his office does the standard training found in most brokerages, but also tries to ensure that employees have “a balanced wheel of life.” The company’s unique approach to cultivating its 33 full-time Realtors along with a commitment to superior customer service has earned them the JD Power and Associates Award in buyer recognition and customer and seller satisfaction for the last three years. The award is just another example of how Century 21 Troop Real Estate works hard to exceed its clients’ expectations.

Poseidon Pools:
Part of the SCV’s ‘Back Yard’ for 16 Years By Jim Walker
P
oseidon Pools is a full service pool construction and maintenance company, specializing in creating beautiful backyard environments. Owner Jason Stauffer, who has been building pools in the Santa Clarita Valley for 16 years, said, “The first thing that sets our company apart from others is really our attention to detail and working closely with our clients. I am involved in all stages of our projects from design to completion, and I’m frequently on the jobs myself, making sure things are being done as per plan and to my clients’ expectations. “I also work closely with my clients throughout the project, including making decisions on materials that suit their specific design needs. So we are not only the pool builder, we are the architect, the designer and the client’s assistant in making tough decisions for a beautifully finished project.” Stauffer added, “The other thing that sets us apart from other companies is that we not only build pools, we cater to all aspects of a backyard environment, such as fire pits, barbecue islands, decorative concrete, synthetic turf and drought-tolerant landscaping. We’ll also do the front yard. And we don’t just build it. We also offer pool service once your project is done.” He explained that Poseidon Pools uses American-manufactured Hayward pool products. “They are backed by a three-year warranty when we build your pool, and there is a four-year warranty on the industry’s most electrically efficient, variable speed filtration pump, the TriStar VS 950. This is the longest warranty in the industry,” he said. Stauffer added that the Hayward line has the latest technology when it comes to controlling your pool, spa and related features, such as waterfalls and color-changing light shows, utilizing any web accessible smart device. “You want your spa heated and ready to use when you get home from a long day’s work? Done with the touch of your fingertip,” he said. He explained that the Hayward line includes the most intuitive remote control system available, called the OmniLogic (www.thepow-

he mission of Heritage Sierra Medical Group of Santa Clarita is to ensure fully coordinated, technology-driven patient care to the highest level of service. “We have diligently invested our time and resources in the development of programs and services responsive to the healthcare needs of today’s patient, while adapting to the increasingly diverse needs of tomorrow’s healthcare agenda,” said Tarana Sherzada, director of network management. Founded in 1984, Sierra Medical Group joined the Heritage Provider Network in 2008. Services include internal medicine, family medicine, pediatrics, lab draw, women’s health, x-rays, specialist referrals, urgent care and walkin care, as well as a doctor who is always oncall. “We offer very unique services such as disease management, health education, dedicated patient advocates who are here to assist our members, and a physician is on call 24 hours a day,” Sherzada said. “And we welcome walk-ins and same day appointments, which seems to be an issue nowadays.” Heritage Sierra Medical Group is one of the very few Medical Groups in Los Angeles County to be recognized by Integrated Healthcare Association for providing top quality of care for three consecutive years to Medicare beneficiaries. Treating patients of all ages, Heritage Sierra Medical Group offers access to primary care physicians and specialists with medical offices in the Santa Clarita Valley, and also utilizes Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital for inpatient services. “Aside from our staff primary care physicians, we have affiliations to 16 community primary care physicians for a total of 21 primary care physicians in the Santa Clarita Valley,” said Sherzada. Since its founding in 1984, Heritage Sierra Med-

The majority of patients reside in the Antelope Valley and Santa Clarita Valley. “However, we are able to treat patients who live within a 30 mile radius from any of our three locations,” Sherzada said. “Our patients do not need to travel outside of the Santa Clarita Valley for primary care, specialty care or in-patient services.” Patients particularly appreciate minimal wait

times, she said, and the ability to make primary care appointments within the same day for urgent matters, and within the same week for non-urgent matters. “We are a family and treat our patients as such by building a relationship with our members and ensure they are cared for and seen timely,” Sherzada said. “We also offer Telemedicine for certain
providers who have more than one location to ensure the patient will always have face-to-face interaction.” Heritage Sierra Medical Group is also known for supporting local philanthropic causes, including sponsoring the Santa Colorita 5k Fun Run, Golden Years Expo, Cowboy Festival, Summer Bash and Kids Expo. One time, “we helped Little Light Pre-school located in Newhall pay for the children’s t-shirts that were stolen,” Sherzada recalled. In other charitable efforts, Heritage Sierra Medical Group served the SCV Backs the Blues group by donating more than 300 bottles of water to the supporters. Additionally, 400 bottles of water were donated to the men and women fighting the 2016 Sand Fire, and more than 600 bottles were donated in support of the vigil held for fallen officer Steve Owen in both the Antelope Valley and Santa Clarita Valley. “We also support local fundraising and support groups such as the Boys and Girls Club, Santa Clarita Valley Senior Center, Alzheimer’s Association and more,” Sherzada said. Additionally, through its role with the Santa Clarita Valley Chamber of Commerce, “we have established relationships to help educate and provide healthcare services such as blood pressure, glucose screenings and flu shots at no cost,” Sherzada said. Physicians have also given free educational talks at places like Oakmont of Santa Clarita, the Santa Clarita Senior Center and Santa Clarita Christian Fellowship. Above all, “we emphasize the importance of getting to know you and your history to ensure that you receive the highest quality medical care,” said Sherzada. “We are proud to serve the Santa Clarita Valley residents for all their healthcare needs from infancy to geriatrics.” For more information, call the member services department at 661-273-7346.

he 18 schools comprising the William S. Hart Union High School District are known for their student achievement in academics, extra-curricular activities and athletics. How students thrive preparing for life as adults is not so widely known. Within the Hart School District are academies and pathways that allow students with specific career interests a chance to learn and grow within a smaller school setting. Career pathways fall under the Career and College Readiness (CCR) umbrella, which offers study in disciplines ranging from the health sciences and STEM, to hospitality and criminal justice. “The Hart District focus is to support career exploration in junior high followed by concentration in career pathways in high school, many of which culminate with industry certification, internships, and even state licensure in some programs,” said Dr. Mariane Doyle, Director of Career Technical Education in the Hart School District. “We work with students to identify their career goals and then work backwards to identify the college or post-secondary educational preparation needed to achieve those goals through our career pathways and academies.” At Valencia High School, students can participate in the Health Sciences Academy, where students interested in a career in medicine can learn and practice. Within this academy is the sports medicine program, giving students a chance to work alongside professional athletic trainers on campus as they tend to injuries and rehabilitation of student athletes. Many students have gone on to medical school after completing their post-secondary education Many of these programs actually begin at the junior high level. For example, students at Arroyo Seco Junior High School can begin their journey toward a STEM career (science, technology, engineering and math) that will continue through Sau-
gus High School. With teachers collaborating together, students can learn robotics, flight & space, and coding, and even take their ideas from the computer screen to finished product in Arroyo Seco’s Makerspace. That education continues at Saugus High School where even more sophisticated advanced manufacturing techniques are used in yet another Makerspace in cooperation with local industry and engineering professionals. This cooperation between junior and senior highs

is not limited to just Arroyo Seco and Saugus as all six comprehensive high schools have similar relationships with their feeder junior highs. Take for example the same relationship shared between Sierra Vista Junior High and Canyon High School. While they too offer STEM to both boys and girls, the coding that begins at Sierra Vista can lead students to a new workspace classroom for computer science at Canyon. workspace, Canyon’s computer science students can work collaboratively in a classroom that features couches, raised team tables and multiple media monitors. Students begin their chosen pathway that will lead them to future careers, some of which haven’t even been created yet. And speaking of collaboration, 12 science teachers from across the Hart School District have been selected to take part in a NASA mission called SOFIA, the Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy. The teachers will be onboard a Boeing 747 modified by NASA to become the world’s largest airborne observatory, with an effective telescope diameter of 2.5 meters (100 inches). Flying at altitudes between 39,000 to 45,000 feet, above more than 99% of the water vapor in the atmosphere, SOFIA makes it possible to obtain astronomical data that are impossible to obtain from telescopes on the ground. The first six teachers will go on their 10-12 hour missions in the fall of 2017 with the second group of six going up in the fall of 2018. “Our Hart District teachers are over-the-moon excited and proud to be going on SOFIA,” said Julie Huffman, Science Teacher on Special Assignment with the Hart District. “Working with NASA scientists to see far out into our universe and collect evidence is a once in a lifetime opportunity that we can’t wait to bring back to our students and community.” When you factor all the career pathway opportunities on every Hart School District campus, with five-time award-winning Model Continuation School Bowman High School, the home school program called Hart @ Home that enables students to spend one-on-one instruction time with highly credentialed teachers, and Golden Oak Adult School providing everything from high school diplomas to career preparation programs for students 18-andover, the Hart School District offers an educational experience recognized as one of the best in the State of California.
