Kumon
Canyon Country and Valencia-North Kumon, the world’s largest after-school math and reading enrichment program, helps preschool to high school age students master fundamental concepts vital to success inside and outside of the classroom. Noticing a need for an enrichment program in Canyon Country (in 2007, followed by Valencia-North in 2010), local business owners Dorothy and Rafael Javellana were determined to bring Kumon Centers to the communities. After enrolling their own children in the program 15 years ago, Dorothy and Rafael became true believers in the Kumon Method of Learning. The curriculum is designed to foster independent
learning skills that allow students to progress through the work, eventually studying above their grade level. Dorothy and Rafael’s centers currently help over 500 children soar academically through Kumon. “We truly believe that, at Kumon, children have an unlimited potential to succeed,” said Dorothy and Rafael. “Our goal is to help each child develop strong academic skills, a love of learning and the confidence to excel beyond the classroom. Our passion and drive comes from witnessing first-hand how Kumon has transformed ordinary students into superior ones.” Kumon’s approach helps children learn math and reading concepts based on their ability rather than age or grade. Students build a strong foundation, gaining confidence, and enhancing their independent learning skills. Swimming Lessons = School Readiness School readiness is more than ABC’s and 123’s. It’s a child’s ability to learn from someone other than mom or dad in a group setting. Some children adapt well to the massive changes school brings; for others, it’s a bumpy road with many stops for parent-teacher meetings. What can a parent do to help their child prepare for the leap to the classroom? Turns out, swimming lessons might be the answer. Researchers at Griffith University studied the effect of swimming lessons on children and found that early swimmers appeared to make the transition to school more easily. \ “It was found that the children {who received swim lessons} scored better on measures of understanding and complying with directions,” the Interim Report states in November 2012. The effect was more pronounced on children who began lessons earlier
obeyed because they are clear cut and consistently enforced to maintain safety. Goals are set, and by following directions and putting forth the best effort, success is achieved and celebrated. All the tools your child needs to thrive and learn in school are present in a swim lesson. For more information on swimming lessons and water safety, contact Academy Swim Club at 661-702-8585, or visit www.Swim4Life.com. and participated for longer. These early results reinforce what learn-to swim professionals have believed all along: swimming lessons teach more than a lifesaving skill. A child practices active listening by hearing a skill described, watching a demonstration and performing the skill themselves. Rules are

Santa Clarita’s Best Kept Secret— An Education in Cheerleading “I have gone from gymnastics to cheer trying to train my daughter for college cheer. I have given local institutions thousands for private lessons, teams, camps, classes, and clinics to develop skills. I was told something different by each gym with their only consistency being a belief they are somehow the best and want to take my money. Before I impart my years of wisdom, know that it was only through trial and error, personal experience and literally tens of thousands of dollars that I am able to share what I have found. My second mortgage is now your free education. The truth is that the more money you spend does NOT equal better instruction, and YOUR CHILD MUST IMPROVE! At first and maybe because I am partially a “bad” parent, I blamed my daughter.
She tried, but didn’t really improve. It wasn’t until my final gym move that I truly understood where I went wrong. After eight years, three gymnastic gyms, two cheer gyms and four years of team, my daughter, who was working on her tuck, was introduced to Coach Shelly of Gymcheer USA. She is disciplined, tough, and even a little intimidating but NO ONE is better. A year later, my daughter was throwing beautiful fulls. We made our team and wanted to share the best kept secret in this Valley.” Donna P.

A.S.E. Enrichment Oftentimes, when children are done with a day or year of school, they just want a break. Parents want to give them that well-deserved rest, but still might be concerned at times about them being completely unproductive, overdosing on screen time, and losing some of the intellectual gains they made during the school year. In addition to that, parents might have to continue working and taking care of errands during the summer and want a safe and engaging option for their children. A.S.E. Enrichment is a local non-profit organization that has provided fun, yet engaging and educational summer camps, afterschool classes at students’ local schools, and evening academies for the past 10 years. Options for camps/classes include Lego Robotics, Cooking, Programming, Video Game Design, Art, Ceramics, Musical Theater, Sports, and a wide variety of Performing Arts and Filmmaking as well. There are even options for developing vital life skills, such as Entrepreneur Camp, Babysitting
Camp, Martial Arts, and Sewing. A.S.E. Enrichment has become a trusted name in many homes in Santa Clarita for interactive and hands-on classes and camps that keep kids engaged and excited about learning while still giving them a break from the rigors of school. One can think of A.S.E. as a one-stop shop for interests of all kinds during school breaks and after school. This summer A.S.E. is also offering some weekly academic camps that can enable students to remain strong in concepts already studied or help kids get ahead for the year ahead. It’s just enough to keep their memories fresh while still providing a nice summer break. The academies focus on Writing and Math skills as well as an SAT course for higher grades. Call us today for more info on camps or classes for fall. Mention this page and you can receive 10% off a summer camp. Call 661-310-3330 or visit www.aseEnrichment.com.

California Institute of the Arts California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) offers comprehensive programs in art, critical studies, dance, film/ video, music and theater, all housed under one roof. CalArts students make art around the clock in a fast-paced, forward-looking environment with the guidance of a faculty of professional artists and thinkers who are each at the leading edge of their respective fields As first envisioned by Walt Disney, the CalArts founding concept was to bring different art forms together and allow them to cross-pollinate, to inform and inspire each other, with the aim of sparking fresh
thinking and innovation. In this multi-disciplinary context, CalArts’ proven educational method is based on mentoring—the collegial, individualized interaction between teachers and students, in class, in production and in customized courses of study. Bishop Alemany High School’s Legacy of Scholastic Excellence Situated in the shadows of the San Fernando Mission, Bishop Alemany High School’s name honors an important personage in the history of the Catholic Church in California: Joseph Sadoc Alemany, O.P. Alemany was particularly concerned with providing quality, affordable education for the youth within his care enabling them to live up to their full potential. It is this illustrious legacy that Bishop Alemany High School strives to emulate today. Founded in 1956 and
co-educational since 1970, Bishop Alemany boasts a racially and culturally diverse student body of about 1350. Its tradition of excellence manifests itself in a full Honors and Advanced Placement (AP) curriculum in addition to a strong college-preparatory program -- they are one of only two schools in the LA Archdiocese with AP Capstone distinction and hold the honor of being 13-time Academic Decathlon Champs. Classical Education Is Producing Thinking Students By Wally Caddow, Managing Director, Trinity Classical Academy
For education to be effective, it must go beyond conveying fact. Truly effective education cultivates articulate, thinking students who are able to develop facts into arguments and convey those arguments clearly and persuasively. Parents all across the United States are recognizing that classical education adds the dimension and breadth needed to develop students’ minds. Rigorous academic standards, a dedication to order and discipline, and a focus on valuable subjects is fueling the rapid growth of the nation’s classical schools. There is n greater task for education than to teach students how to learn. The influence of progressive teaching methods and the oversimplification of textbooks make it difficult for students to acquire the mental discipline that traditional instruction methods once cultivated. The classical method develops independent learning skills on the foundation of
language, logic, and tangible fact. The classical difference is clear when students are taken beyond conventionally taught subjects and asked to apply their knowledge through logic and clear expression. After years of declining achievement in education, colleges and universities are seeking out classically trained students all across the country. Classically educated students are seeing very high acceptance rates to colleges and being offered generous scholarship packages to attend. Colleges realize that these students are well prepared for higher education and are more likely to succeed. Grow Where Your Feet are Planted Each of us has a different starting point, different goal, and different destination, but we are all striving to achieve more in our lives. Some of us reached educational milestones as teens and some of us, like myself, experienced life events and setbacks that kept us from reaching those milestones. 2017 marks a special milestone for me as I will earn both my high school diploma from Golden Oak Adult School and my associate’s degree from College of the Canyons this June. As I walk in both of these commencement ceremonies, I will remember the late hours, time spent away from family, and long work weeks struggling through to reach my goals and to silence that defeating voice of “will
I ever finish?” Every time I searched for work I dreaded the question “Did you graduate from high school?” This little question molded my views of myself. It haunted me and shamed me for many years and kept me from reaching my potential at work. Now with pride I can check the box that says, “YES” and I look forward to continuing my education at California State University Northridge in the 2017/18 school year. On the walls of the College of the Canyon Campus I read “Success is the repetition of small steps repeated daily.” So whatever your starting point is I encourage you start with wherever your feet are planted today. Take advantage of the educational opportunities and resources available in the Santa Clarita Valley through the Gateway SCV Consortium. Don’t Lose Ground This Summer Imagine training an athlete for nine months, getting them to the perfect level of conditioning...then telling them to take three months off and do nothing! Now, imagine getting them back on the field of competition at the end of those three months and expecting them to perform at their training peak. While every good coach will build varying levels of intensity into their training programs, none would ever recommend extended periods in which not even minimal skills are practiced. Ironically, however, this is the very thing that parents routinely do over summer vacation. This can have profound consequences on the ability of children to remain at or above grade level in critical academic areas. Studies have shown that, on average,
students lose nearly 2.6 months of grade level equivalency in mathematical computation skills over the summer months: nearly one third of a school year! The same thing can happen with reading and writing skills. Parents can do a lot for their children during the summer to keep their interest in learning alive. It is easy to underestimate the academic progress that can be made with even a few hours of tutoring each week during these months. Tutoring can help a child return to school with increased confidence, and a greater likelihood of quickly picking up and moving past the academic level they were at when summer began. SCCS Students Take Their British Literature Class Abroad
The walls have come down and the roof is off in Santa Clarita Christian School’s British literature classroom. Fifty, eleventh grade students and chaperones travelled across the pond for nine days in April touring England from its northern parts in Haworth, to the heart of the country in London. Students spent the year in the classroom studying the literature of Britain from Bronte to Shakespeare, Shelley to Browning, and then set out to discover with their own eyes the rich historical context and landscape that inspired the best of the country’s literary offerings. SCCS’ British literary tour expanded the student’s
love for and understanding of some of the world’s greatest authors, but more importantly supported the object and reward of all who attend Santa Clarita Christian School – to provide a distinctive biblical worldview that grows its student’s affection for Christ and prepares them to live their convictions with integrity, confidence, and humility no matter where they are in the world. If you are looking for a school that will challenge your child academically, while fostering a Biblical worldview, then consider SCCS. With a low student-to-teacher ratio, competitive sports for grades K-12, dual enrollment and Advanced Placement classes and full and half day Kindergarten programs, SCCS students continue to matriculate into the nation’s top universities. SCCS is now enrolling for the 2017-18 school year. To schedule your campus tour today or for more information call 661-252-7371 or visit www.sccs.cc or facebook. com/SantaClaritaChristianSchool.

You have probably heard that the early years are a time of profound growth and development, but how can you best support your child’s needs at such an important time? The first place to start, is to get to know your options. There are so many different theories in early childhood education. Which is the best fit for your child and your family? School Music Programs & Private Lessons Go Together By Mindy Cabral
Music students in band or orchestra (or other ensembles) at school should strongly consider taking private lessons because they are in their school music program. Private music lessons and school music programs compliment one another. Music Directors at school have very limited time to teach the specifics of playing individual instruments to individual students. They primarily focus their time on rehearsing an ensemble of mixed instruments for performances. Rehearsing is when a music ensemble combines the individual parts of the music together with the correct rhythm, blend and balance of instruments, articulations, dynamics, and expression. It also helps promote cooperative learning and
helps develop better listening skills. Individual practice is key for learning to play your instrument and music so you can attend rehearsals prepared to put your part together with others. By taking private lessons, students are able to work one on one with a music professional who can help them learn the specific playing techniques needed to play successfully. This includes correct playing posture and positioning, producing a sound with good tone quality, and also allows students to pursue their own individual musical interests. Having a teacher by your side throughout the process boosts student’s confidence, allows students to focus on their skills and set personal goals, helps students stay motivated, and gives students the tools they need to progress and become more advanced players. For more information on private lessons, classes, camps, and instrument rentals, please contact the friendly staff and Little School of Music: 661-222-2239.
