VICTORY BELL
he Signal Victory Bell symbolizes football supremacy in the Santa Clarita Valley. The Foothill League team with the most victories against other Foothill opponents wins possession of the bell for a year. If there is a two-way tie for best record, the bell will go to the winner of the head-to-head matchup. If there is a three-way tie, the Foothill League's tie-breaking formula for playoff seedings will be used. 1969 – Hart 1970 – Canyon 1971 – Hart 1972 – Hart 1973 – Canyon 1974 – Hart 1975 – Hart 1976 – Canyon 1977 – Hart 1978 – Saugus 1979 – Canyon

he champs are looking to make it three in a row, but you won’t find many on the Saugus team or staff saying they have it in the bag. The team will insist, no matter how strong they look, to take the season week by week. Centurion head coach Jason Bornn has been dealing with the usual high school football offseason issues of plenty of key players graduating, but with plenty of talent returning. However, in his 19th year at the helm for Saugus, Bornn knows all about getting players ready to play varsity football. “We just focus on the here and now and the process of trying to get better one day at a time,” said

Senior TJ Cataldi and junior Trent Johnson are looking to lead the Centurions into battle week zero against Rio Mesa. Bornn thinks both have their own strengths and both have been competing hard all summer. Cataldi is a former defensive back

he Wildcats are preparing for a followup to their solid (8-3, 4-1) season last year. The vast majority of the team returned for their senior years and will look to hoist West Ranch’s first Foothill League title. The pass-heavy Wildcats will be led by Colorado commit Ryan Staub. The senior gunslinger is coming off his impressive 2,414-passing-yard and 21-touchdown season. “We’re excited,” said Staub. “There’s very high expectations but the sky’s the limit for this team. Anything short of that is kind of a disappointment and we’re ready to take on that challenge.” Staub will be without his favorite target from last season, Dylan Cotti, who led the team in receiving yards and touchdown catches. However, the returning senior receivers are poised for great years. “Last season we did very good but I think we have a stronger core this time,” said West Ranch wide receiver Chaz Hilst. “I think we’ve all gotten better overall. ready.” Hilst, Maverick Diaz and Brady Van Bekkum are a tall and fast receiving corps with a lot of history and chemistry with their quarterback. Hilst led all Wildcat receivers last year with 21.2 yards per catch and had the longest reception of the year with a 75-yard haul. “I told them, ‘This is your year to shine,’” said Wildcats head coach Chris Varner. “Chaz was one of the top receivers in the league last year and I expect him to be the top receiver this year. If he can stay consistent he’s going to be tough to cover. He’s a huge kid.” See WR, page 34

he Grizzlies are looking to carry their strong summer into the 2022 season. The team has had success at various camps, round robins and 7-on-7 tournaments. Golden Valley has plenty of similarities to last year’s hard-hitting defense and run-heavy offense, but we could see more tight ends utilized this season. Head coach Dan Kelley is excited about some of the tight ends on his roster but is most excited about his new signal caller Chris Melkonian and his fit at the quarterback spot so far. “Chris Melkonian has really come alive at quarterback for us this summer,” said Kelley. “He’s

The Grizzlies’ quarterback was at the helm for the junior varsity Golden Valley squad in his freshman year and later proved himself as a two-way wide receiver and defensive back last season. “The receivers and coaches have made it really easy for me,” said Melkonian. “It’s been great tran-

art football is looking to bounce back from a couple of tough years. The Indians are going on 15 years without a Foothill League title but just eight since winning a CIF championship. 2022 looks like another year of the usual tough Hart defense with an offense looking sharp as well. Head coach Rick Herrington is looking to take his team to the playoffs for the first time in his Indians’ head coaching tenure. Hart will have weapons all over the offense. Junior Tim Larkins will return to varsity for his third year at quarterback with a lot of promise. The gunslinger will be without his favorite targets from last season, including his older brother, but the Indian wide receivers look strong. Shawn Irwin, Adam Geukins and Isaiah Lopez have all impressed Herrington so far this summer. “We’ve got our connection down,” said Irwin. “Whenever

he throws a ball, I kind of know where he’s going to throw it.” The pair’s chemistry pre-dates high school football and was started in youth football when quarterback and receiver were about 8 years old. “It’s like throwing to my brother,” said Larkins. “I’ve been with him for years. There’s just a connection there now.” Herrington thinks Irwin’s ability to get open is unbelievable as he has shown flashes similar to his older brother, Cincinnati Bengals receiver Trenton Irwin. Geukins was a touchdown machine in the lower levels for Hart and will look to help get the varsity scoring up from an average of 20.2 points in league games last year.
schedule.
The Hart offensive line will feature some new faces but Herrington has liked what he’s seen from his group this summer. The Indians were able to run the ball well in some scrimmages this summer in padless tournaments but the head coach still wants to see his group gel before league play. At running back, senior Donovan Dunn will be the lead back for the third straight year. Dunn is coming off a 464-all-purpose-yard and 10-touchdown season in 2021. The tight end spot will also be crucial for Hart as Herrington is expecting a big year from senior Charlie Thurman. Thurman will also be an edge rusher for the Hart defense.

irst-year head coach Ken Holsenbeck will have one of the toughest jobs in the Santa Clarita Valley this upcoming season. The coach is tasked with revitalizing the once-great Cowboys’ football program. Holsenbeck was promoted in March from his offensive line coach position at his alma mater. “We’ve really gotten back to some of our oldschool Cowboy football ways around here,” said Holsenbeck. “The kids are out here working hard
and responding well to the coaching. We’re back to developing athletes here and it’s something that’s important for the program, not just for this year but long-term.” The team is coming off another winless season in league but will now have a fresh start with a new coach at the helm. Canyon graduated a fair number of impact seniors on offense, including their starting quarterback and running back. The shoes of Landon Naasz are still up for grabs as the Cowboys have been in a quarterback competition. Junior Caleb Sparks is emerging as Canyon’s

Uebelhardt, a former CIF champion coach with Hart, is preparing his team to not back down from the challenge and to play four tough quarters of football. Although the program hasn’t played a 10-game season in its short history, the head coach is proud of how his team is coming together on and off the field. he Trinity Classical Academy Knights have one of their biggest teams in school history. The depth has shaped into great competition and development over the summer. Now head coach Mike Parrinello is hoping to see his team shine for their first year in the Mesquite League. Parrinello will have a strong returning class on his squad but the head coach is excited about his freshmen and newcomers. Dominic Smith will likely be the starting quar-
terback for the Knights after some good showings last season. However, Parrinello will keep the pressure on Smith to stay sharp and earn the starting job. “We’re in a quarterback competition because we’ll always be in a quarterback competition,” said Parrinello. “But I anticipate he’s going to step forward and he’s going to get there.” Seniors Noah Estanol and Nick Parrinello will return for their senior years at running back. Nick posted some nice numbers last season with dual-threat quarterback Wil Jackson leading the team.

he Santa Clarita Christian School rebuild may be nearing its completion earlier than expected. After shutting down its football program for a few years, the program was revived last season with first-year head coach Austin Fry. The team may have finished the season winless, but the schedule was packed with playoff teams. Fry was impressed by his players’ tenacity and progression throughout the season and offseason. “This year we’re looking forward to building on the foundation we made behind the scenes after the 0-10 season.” SCCS has the building blocks for a great season. The team has 23 rostered players, six more than last year. Sophomore Cayden Rappleye will be the Cardinal quarterback again heading into 2022. As a freshman, Rappleye threw for 1,294 yards, 20 touchdowns and 15 interceptions. The sophomore has shown good instincts, good pocket awareness and confidence. The quarterback has an undeniable connection with wideout Eli Duhm. “I’ve seen him make more acrobatic catches than anybody,” said Fry. “There’s no ball that he can’t catch.” Duhm finished last year leading the team with 30 catches, 455 receiving yards and eight touchdowns. Alongside Duhm is senior receiver Carter Aispuro, who is poised to have a big year. “I’m hyped,” said Aispuro. “I have high expectations for this season, definitely higher than last season.” The two-way Aispuro finished the year with the best yards per catch average and also was second in yards and receiving touchdowns. Joel Calhoun has impressed his coach at guard. The senior doesn’t have a lot of history playing the game but See SCCS, page 43 AUGUST 13, 2022

everyone is expecting. It’s going to take some good leadership and some dogs.” League first teamer AJ Goodman and Khai Ky-Yeith were strong wide receivers last year and are looking strong heading into their senior years. Goodman led Saugus in yards per catch last season as well as having the longest passing play with an 85yard reception. Saugus’ defensive front looks to have another year terrorizing backfields. The charge will be led by reigning Lineman of the Year Dario Sandoval at defensive end. Bornn has been impressed with how a lot of his linemen are coming along on both sides of the ball. There could be plenty of different names in Saugus uniforms surprising some people this year. Austin Treahy, Turner and Viger will comprise one of the biggest and likely one of the most explosive linebacking corps in the SCV. Viger is a constant threat to opposing backfields. The POTY finished last year with 76 tackles, 16 tackles for loss and 5.5 sacks. 32 | 2022 FOOTBALL PREVIEW
Cornerback Jaden Lemmond and strong safety Vinnie Gallagher will be anchors in the defensive back group. “The energy is high this year,” said Gallagher. “We’re going to come up this year and play with a lot of fire. We’re going to be ready to go.” The champs are looking for the three-peat and ideally another undefeated league championship. Saugus has accomplished the most in the toughest years in recent history. The last time the Centurions lost a Foothill League football game, the world was still maskless and pandemic-less. “It’s nice to get back to some sense of normalcy,” said Bornn. “We’re trying to get back to where we were pre-pandemic. We’re still dealing with COVID; it’s here and there. For the most part, we’re excited to be back on the field and playing.” The team’s multiple sets on defense will aim to confuse opposing quarterbacks yet again. The Saugus defense will be anything but a onetrick pony. Look for the pass rush and coverage to be tight. “We can do both [man and zone coverage],” said Lemmond. “We play press, we can play off. It’s locked down everywhere.” The SCV may still be a few sea-

On the line, SMU commit, 6-foot, 7-inch tackle Sean Scott will be a force alongside center Max Johnson. The two will be pivotal in West Ranch’s offense and keeping Staub on his feet. “We got to keep [ourselves] motivated if we want to win league,” said Scott. “Even if we lose a game or two, we just have to stay focused.” The Wildcats are leaning toward a running back by committee with big shoes to fill after Dylan Roof ’s huge senior season last year. Roof finished with 645 yards on 7.8 yards per carry and 11 touchdowns. Senior Tyler Jones will come over from cornerback to the backfield while sophomore Luke DePerno is coming up from junior varsity. Scott and Johnson both play on the defensive line as well. The two will lead the interior at the line for the West Ranch pass attack. “I think we’ve got a good O-Line and D-Line so far,” said Johnson.

“We’re all really good friends and playing together is fun.” On the edge, senior Griffin Nibarger is coming off an eight-sack season and will look to give opposing offensive tackles fits. “We definitely have a chip on our shoulders after last year,” said Nibarger. “We’re trying to come back this year and win league.” The linebackers will mostly be familiar faces. Connor Reyes, Tyler Lujan and Van Bekkum all impressed last season and Varner expects big things from the group again. The team will also have strong defensive backs led by William Seidel. Seidel helped West Ranch seal the deal on Valencia last season with a game-winning interception. “We have years of experience and we’ve all grown up playing together so there’s a lot of chemistry there,” said Seidel. Seidel will also look to make an impact on the receiving corps this season. The Wildcats are confident and feel balanced in every area. The bulk of the seniors have been playing together since at least their sophomore years. That chemistry may be a deciding factor in tight games all season long. The group got some great experience from their short postseason last year in their 34-14 loss at Lawndale. “We learned a lot and that the whole season is a marathon, not a little sprint,” said Staub. “We have to pace ourselves and be ready. We know what to expect to win a playoff game.” Staub could very well lead the Foothill League in passing again and would be the first quarter-

I’m excited to play with these boys and win some games. This is like my family; we grew up together.” The team chemistry is one thing most players noted as a big factor for their success this summer. A team camping trip is a big reason for the quick chemistry building.

“At the beginning, I was a little worried thinking that [Vince Tiscareno and I] were the only returners, along with two linebackers,” said Thurman. “So I was a little iffy but we have some kids coming down that are actually pretty good. They know what they’re doing with holding the edge.” The big senior will rush alongside nose tackle Vince Tiscareno. The two believe their defensive line will be key in Hart winning football games this season “I feel like the line and linebackers are exceptional this year,” said Tiscareno. “Better than last year. I think we’ll stand out this year.” Both Thurman and Tiscareno believe varsity newcomers Nathaniel Mata and James Freude will make an impact this year on the defen-
sive line. In the middle of the field is inside linebacker Alberto Favela. Favela led the team in tackles last season with 84 and is Hart’s only returning player from the AllLeague selections. “We’ve installed more this season than the last,” said Favela. “[Our defense] is going to be scary this year.” The team will look to utilize two kickers. Punting and kickoff duties are looking like Samahj Oyewo’s, while PATs and field goals will fall under Bennett Murphy. The team had a solid summer and many players believed they made big strides. “Things are looking up for us right now,” said Herrington. “We’re hoping we’re going to be more competitive this year.” Hart is rostered heavily by juniors who have mostly played together

and has impressed his coaches at the wideout spot. Lastly, speedster Caleb Yang will round out the receiving corps as the track star returns to varsity football. “Dylan Kelly, that’s been my guy since freshman year,” said Erickson. “I’m excited to play with him again.” Running back Daniel Hernandez will also return for his senior season. Hernandez dealt with a shoulder injury last year but wreaked havoc when he was on the field in a running tandem with Giorgio Spiropoulos. Junior Aidan Hicks will be the new face alongside Hernandez in the Valencia two-headed monster backfield. The offensive line will also have a lot of new faces but no one has more experience shaping new faces into Foothill League champs than head coach Larry Muir. Center Daniel Costas will be the sole returning starter on the line for Valencia. “The offensive line is going to have to really mature, grow fast and learn to work together,” said Muir. The head coach has liked what he’s seen out of his young line so far. The Viking defense consists of standout returners including linebacker Reid Farrell, defensive end Jake Pikor, linebacker Jack Gieser, nose tackle Anthony Castilo and defensive back Tony Testa. The defense will be close to half returners and half newcomers but fans may not be able to tell the difference. “It was like [the new players] clicked automatically,” said Pikor. “There was no confusion. They had a good setup from JV. We’re kind of set, especially in the front eight.” “Our front eight, these past few 38 | 2022 FOOTBALL PREVIEW

years have been amazing,” said the CIF Defensive Player of the Year Farrell. “But I think our DB’s will shock a lot of people this year. I think a lot of people feel ‘a lot of players left.’ The guys we have are going to shock a lot of people.” The cornerback group will feature Ralph Testa, Tyler Thompson and Vikings JV MVP Jordan Cardenas. Cardenas will also see time at slot receiver. The Vikings’ safeties will be Jaybo Wilson, Gavin Corbett and Kelly. Muir has high expectations for his defense with talent all over the depth chart. The defense will refuse to plateau and keep working throughout the season. “You can’t just come out here and expect for it to just happen,” said Pikor. “You have to work for it.” Valencia’s special teams will also be another big advantage as kicker Cameron Fontal heads into his senior year. Muir expects Fontal to play a big role scoring for the team and to go on to keep playing in college. The team will have a tough preseason but they wouldn’t have it any other way. Valencia will have nonleague matchups with Bishop Amat, Quartz Hill, Notre Dame and Rancho Cucamonga. Three of those four were playoff teams including Division 12 champs

Quartz Hill. The three finished a combined 24-15 last season. Valencia will look to capitalize on their home field advantage, or just the advantage of having a home field. West Ranch and Castaic will “host” home games against the Vikings at Valencia. Their one true league away game will come against Hart at COC. The Indians hosted the Vikings at Cougar field last season where the Valencia fans arguably stole home field advantage. Valencia’s early tough schedule will carry into league play as their Foothill League opener will be against Saugus. The Vikings will be the away team at home the following week in their first-ever matchup with Castaic. Valencia will have its bye week in week nine before wrapping up the year against Hart and Canyon. Muir’s squad will have a solid chance to reclaim the Foothill League this season. The Vikings will be fighting week after week to win their 12th league championship and possibly post consecutive CIF titles. “Finally, football season is here,” said Muir. “We’re not going to ease into it. We have to hit the ground running. There’s a lot of room for growth and maturity that we need to have for us to be successful.” AUGUST 13, 2022

Senior Navin Srinivasan has also stood out this summer and could be a name to remember. The Cowboys will also be without their top receiver from last season. Kaleb Alexander transferred out, clearing the WR1 spot for Taylor. The offensive line will have plenty of solid pieces, including senior Westin Brombart. “We have a lot of people out here,” said Brombart. “There’s a lot of new kids. A lot more than last year and the years I’ve been here. We’ve got brand new coaching and it’s looking a lot better than it has been. I’m excited to see what we’ve got.” Brombart missed the season last year due to injuries but feels stronger than ever going into his senior campaign. “The chemistry is getting there,” said Brombart. “We have a whole new style of offense. Everything’s looking good and we’re putting it all together.” Canyon retained a ton of talent on defense. Senior Max Sanchez is

dropping down from the safety spot to join the linebackers group. “We’ve been out here working,” said Sanchez. “Coach Holsenbeck has been pushing us way harder this year than we have been in the past.” The pass rush will be led by defensive end Diego Olujich. The junior pass rusher led the team in sacks last year, highlighted by a four-sack game against Kennedy. “[Olujich is] definitely an impact player up front for us at defensive end,” said Holsenbeck. “He will continue to make that impact.” Holsenbeck has liked his front seven, which includes plenty of non-seniors, giving this team extra time to grow together. Taylor will also be a core player in the defensive back group. The team only features 12 seniors who, according to their coach, have stepped up into the leadership roles. “We’re a young team but the seniors we have have responded well to the transition and are leading our younger guys well,” said Holsenbeck. Canyon will have a lot of ground to cover before reaching its longterm goal of a CIF championship. The team is hoping to get back on its feet in the Foothill League along the way and snap its 21-game losing streak in league games. “We’re feeling good about where we’re at,” said Holsenbeck. “We need to get out and have some success early in the season, which can carry over later.” The Cowboys won’t travel too far in their preseason. The team’s first challenge will be an away matchup with Canoga Park. Canyon will then return home the following week to play Hueneme before heading to

Three of Canyon’s four non-league opponents are 2021 playoff teams, making it another ideal shape-up for Foothill League play. quarterback transferred to Paraclete. Another hit the team took was losing running back Anthony Martinez for the year after the senior tore his meniscus. “We’ve had quite a few situations of adversity,” said Uebelhardt. “Usually that can do two things. It can either tear a team apart or it can bring a team together. Right now, it’s really brought us together. We’ve had our ups and downs just like any high school football team in the world.” The program played in two varsity games last year against Paraclete and Liberty. The head
coach was excited for his players to get the opportunity to play under the Friday night lights. It can be a whole different ball game playing under the lights, with a bigger crowd, the band playing, etc. The Coyotes now have that experience under their belt and won’t look like deer in the headlights playing in these loud night games. “I think if we can stick to what our coaches preach, we can do well and have a positive season,” said Cruz. “I definitely think we’re going to do better on the offen-

Mario Bethke and Tyler Backman will be threats all over the field. “I’m excited about our offense,” said coach Parrinello. “I think we have enough depth in our skilled positions where we’re going to attack the football. It’s really going to be how those little bit younger linemen progress and they’re doing well now.” On the line, the team may showcase freshmen starting at guard. “We have some big, raw talent guys for us but they just don’t have a ton of experience,” said coach Parrinello. On defense, Bethke and sophomore John Carlson are expected to be forces on the defensive line. Sophomore Cade Frazier and freshman Jake Slay could be pivotal parts of the Knights’ interior line. “I’d like to say that our line will be very successful this year,” said Carlson. “I think we have the drive to want to be good. So, I think that’s going to be a key area for us this year. You only go as far as your line.” The linebacker group is a sea-
soned corps on this team. Senior Anderson Howell will be the middle linebacker likely alongside Tanner Moore, Spector and Estanol. The three combined for 125 tackles last season. “I think our coverages on defense are going to be pretty solid,” said Estanol. “We have a pretty good group that’s able to read pass and read wide receivers and stick with them. We have a good mix of speed and strength on both sides.” The head coach knows well how many two-way standouts he has, leading him to believe there could be up to nine or 10 guys starting on both sides. But Trinity’s newfound depth is gifting the team the potential to give their stars sufficient breaks. “In the past, a lot of times our ones to twos were a huge gap in talent,” said coach Parrinello. “Now, our ones to twos and even sometimes to threes, I could flip a coin to start one of them.” The depth has turned into a healthy competition on the field and the underclassmen have already made some marks on their new teammates.
“I would like to say I was as good as they are when I was a freshman,” said Nick Parrinello, “but I would be lying to myself. They’re a great bunch to have.” Consistency will be another key topic for the head coach. Parrinello wants his team to make the highs of last season a more regular item. See TRINITY, page 49

Trinity will also look to have another big impact year on special teams. The often-overlooked side of football is an area where this team aims to make a serious mark. Whether it be scoring off returns or just making big plays on special teams, the Knights will try to spark AUGUST 13, 2022
their offense or defense with lightsout special teams. “If we steal one or two touchdowns on special teams we will win the game,” said Nick. “I don’t care who we’re playing, how bad we’re playing, how good the other team is, we will win.” The team’s expectations are high but coach Parrinello believes his team will be a contender in their
new league. The Knights are eager to get into pads and suit up under the Friday night lights in 2022. “They’re counting down the days every day,” said coach Parrinello. “I’ve been very happy with the turnout and the enthusiasm. One of things we stress is when we’re on that football field, we’re working hard 100%, completely devoted. We’re going to have a lot of fun.” 2022 FOOTBALL PREVIEW |

Smith noted the team chemistry as one of the best features of the team but also as the one thing he wants to see them keep building. The head coach is expecting a competitive preseason to get his team ready for some tough league action that’ll now have an extra week with the addition of Castaic High School. Golden Valley will open at home (at Canyon) against Newbury Park, followed by nonleague games with Antelope Valley, Quartz Hill
and Garfield. The Grizzlies then get the first crack at Castaic but won’t take them, or anyone, for granted. “Every program in the Foothill League is a class act from coaching to the players,” said Kelley. “So, you got to play close to perfect football week in and week out to be in the game.” The tools are all in place for Golden Valley football to bring home their first Foothill League title and get back into the playoffs. “If we can stay healthy, this team is going to go as far as we want it to go,” said Melkonian.

sive side this year.” The Coyotes have been working for several years on their football program and will get the SCV season opener when they take on Adelanto on Aug. 18 at Valencia High School at 7 p.m. Castaic will look to sharpen all the tools they need to in their nonleague games with Adelanto, Burbank, Royal and Eastside Lancaster. On Sept. 16, the Coyotes will get their first crack at varsity Foothill League action when the team
plays Golden Valley. The inaugural year is in the grasp for the team and their years of hard work may soon come to fruition in their first year of varsity action. Coyotes football will look to come out of the gates like their baseball team did in their inaugural campaign last spring. The team fell short of the playoffs but made plenty of noise all season, surprising most people outside of the team. Castaic will play most of its home games at Valencia, including a matchup with the Valencia Vikings on their own field.
