NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTION Make health & fitness a lifestyle By Martha Michael When the clock ticks midnight every year on Jan. 1, Times Square isn’t the only place we see the ball drop. In a few months’ time, most of us will drop the ball ourselves – on our New Year’s resolutions.
“A lot of people make New Year’s resolutions regarding their finances ... resolving tax issues, changing the way they budget, saving more, or even just communicating better with their spouse,” says Santa Clarita CPA Laura Troost.
According to StatisticBrain.com, only about 9 percent of people successfully achieve their resolutions. And they can involve virtually any arena of life. The top five include “quit smoking” and make “better financial decisions,” says the site.
Weight loss specialist Susan Whitcomb says that her clients come in after they recover

from holiday spending. “It is a bit surprising, but people are often slow to come back right after the holidays. It’s cold outside and they are still in hibernation, working on their New Year schedule and maybe feel financially strapped,” says Whitcomb, who is director of operations for Professional Weight Control Centers, a medical corporation with an office in Canyon Country. “The patients that do come in have that extra edge of excitement, because they know they are living up to their New Year’s See NEW YEARS, page 6

resolution. It is a good feeling, knowing you are making the move to look better, feel better, and decrease your risk for medical problems in 2017.” The focus on weight loss has an obvious impact on local gyms. “As a trainer, January is my favorite month! It’s New Year’s resolution time!” says Vanessa Coleman, fitness instructor and personal trainer at UFC Gym in Canyon Country. “After the holidays people are sick of unhealthy eating and ready to start a healthy lifestyle. Then, by the end of January, only the disciplined and committed stay.” Why do so many people buckle under the weight of working out? Coleman has her own theories. “They do too much too fast. You can’t go from being a couch potato to working out seven days a week, eating chicken breast and broccoli every day,” she says. “You’re setting yourself up for failure.” Her recommendation? “Instead, start slow; remember, the tortoise wins the race,” Coleman adds. “Start with committing to fitness classes three times a week, walking your dog after dinner, setting up personal training sessions for the month.” UFC Gym, which trains with an emphasis on boxing, is launching a six-week New Year’s Challenge on January 23. And Coleman’s coaching reaches outside the ring. “Add that to taking one

KICKING OFF THE NEW YEAR WITH A HEART HEALTHY START (BPT) – Now that it’s a New Year, it is an opportune time to focus on your health and wellness. If you or a loved one is living with cardiovascular disease (CVD), you may be dealing with many burdens, including access to medications - an increasingly common problem. When prescribed a medication by a physician, most individuals expect to receive the medication without jumping through hurdles. However, for many people affected by cardiovascular disease across the country, this is increasingly not always the case. According to Symphony Health Solutions, commercial payers deny up to 90 percent of initial claims
submissions for patients with CVD, with the final rejection rate for patients at 73 percent. Many of these patients who are rejected have high cholesterol and/ or familial hypercholesterolemia (FH), which is an inherited form of significantly high cholesterol and one of the most common genetic diseases, affecting at least one in every 200 to 500 people. Thus, these patients are exploring new treatment regimens because they have not been able to get their low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), or “bad” cholesterol, under control despite treatment with a statin - the current standard of treatment. Additionally, many
patients living with atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD), which is caused by a build-up of cholesterol-rich plaque in the arteries, are unable to get their LDL-C under control with current treatment options. With CVD being a major public health concern in the U.S, it is imperative to lower bad cholesterol for patients who have already had a cardiovascular event, like a heart attack or stroke, as well as patients with FH who require additional treatment options to lower their LDL-C levels along with their statin. Yet, there is a growing concern that many patients with uncontrolled LDL-C levels continue See KICK, page 8

have seen these restrictive authorization practices affecting patients seeking Hepatitis C and heart failure treatments as well. to face challenges in accessing PCSK9 inhibitors their physicians have prescribed based on the approved indication. PCSK9 (or proprotein convertase subtilisin/ kexin type 9) inhibitors are human monoclonal antibodies that block the protein PCKS9, which prevents the body’s natural system from eliminating “bad” cholesterol (low-density lipoprotein cholesterol or LDL-C) from the blood. While the U.S. Food and Drug Administration carefully determined which patients would be appropriate for PCSK9 therapy given the clinical trial information, many payers have implemented restrictive prior authorization processes using stringent utilization management criteria, which is resulting in many patients being denied access. This is not unique to PCSK9s though; we
* Talk to Your Doctor: If you are denied access to vital treatment, talk with your physician about what you can do to receive the therapy you need. * Share Your Story: Patients and physicians should feel empowered to speak out and engage with their networks, sharing their stories to help drive attention and awareness to the issue. * Engage Advocates: Seek out advocacy groups and patient networks that have resources. MINDFUL STRATEGIES FOR A HEALTHY 2017
(BPT) – Losing weight and increasing exercise commonly make the top of New Year’s resolution lists. Yet many people fall short of their wellness goals each year. What can you do differently in 2017 to ensure you’re among those who succeed? “Mental health and taking time for yourself can greatly improve your chances of achieving your health and wellness goals,” says the Mayo Clinic. “It’s important to realize that changing any behavior is often a complex process that requires you to address the mental as well as physical aspects of the change you want to achieve.” Below are helpful strategies from the wellness professionals at Mayo Clinic to assist you in achieving your goals this year:
Be on your mental game Weight loss is a common New Year’s resolution goal, but to achieve it, you’ll likely need to do more than simply change your eating habits. Behaviors, thoughts and emotions may be playing a role in keeping you from shedding pounds. For example, not getting enough sleep can thwart better eating and exercise habits. Sleep deprivation can hinder your ability to control your emotions, interfere with positive thought processes and make you too tired to exercise regularly. Being aware of factors that contribute to negative habits not only can help you succeed, it can also help you sustain the changes.
2017 • signalscv.com
Be aware of self-talk Everyone has an integral dialogue, and it’s the voice we all believe the most. Is yours negative or positive? The voice of your self-talk can greatly affect your confidence level. Pay attention to your self-talk and evaluate if what you’re telling yourself is actually true. When self-talk turns negative, try to challenge it and find a more positive way to look at the situation. For example, turn “I always fail at losing weight because I eat too much” into “I enjoy eating fruits and vegetables and can easily eat three servings a day.” It will take time and practice to learn how to turn negative self-talk into positive, so be patient with yourself.
Fight boredom with fun and creativity People fail at wellness goals for many reasons,
including boredom. Approaching your goals with a creative and fun attitude can help keep them fresh and exciting - and keep you on track! Try learning something new or vary your routine. For example, try a new recipe or modify your usual food

choices. Learn to use a new piece of equipment at the gym, or take an exercise class to learn something you’ve always wanted to do. Dance around the house, take a healthy cooking class, read a book, travel, check an item off your bucket list or create a list if you don’t have one. However you define “fun,” if you enjoy what you’re doing, you’re more likely to want to keep doing it.
Prepare to overcome setbacks No matter how committed you are to a goal, setbacks are normal. Don’t let them derail you. Planning for setbacks and how you’ll overcome them can help you stay on track for the long term. When planning how you’ll reach a desired behavior change, try including some what-if scenarios. For example, if your fitness routine includes a yoga class after work and you get delayed,
think about what you could do to still meet your exercise Approaching goal. You might be your goals with a able to substitute another class or use body weight exercises creative and fun at home. BETTER AND KICKING THAT COLD TO THE CURB your health. Getting eight hours of sleep is always optimal especially when sick; however sickness can often disrupt our sleep. To help combat symptoms like sinus pressure or a stuffed nose from keeping you up, you can make easy changes like propping yourself up in bed and moisturizing the air with a humidifier or vaporizer. You may find you breathe - and sleep - easier. • Combat your worst symptoms. When your cold and flu symptoms become too much, get some real relief. The best plan of action? Turn to your pharmacist for expert advice and medicine recommendations. Advil Cold & Sinus is the number one pharmacist recommended brand to treat your worst cold and flu symptoms. Ask for it at the pharmacy counter. • Don’t be afraid to exercise. If your symptoms are primarily in your head and neck, you’re generally still healthy enough to exercise. Nevertheless, consider a lighter workout to get the benefits of exercise without putting too much stress on your already-suffering body. A brisk walk for 30 to 45 minutes each day while sick is recommended to help you recover. However, be sure to dress appropriately for the climate.

Fluids not only soothe your throat, but they also ward off dehydration, thin your mucus and help your body systems function adequately - which, in turn, helps your immune system function at its best. TIPS
TO GET FIT AND STAY FIT
(BPT) – To lose weight and/or get in better shape consistently ranks as one of the top New Year’s resolutions. However, many resolutions to reach this goal fall short or last less than a month because a great idea is seldom successful without a plan to make it happen. If you’ve tried and failed to get in shape or lose weight as part of a New Year’s resolution, it’s time to put a plan behind your passion. Below are five tips from BiPro’s 31 Ways in 31 Days challenge. They are appropriate for all ages and fitness levels, so use them to start your own wellness resolution, whether it’s on Jan. 1, March 1 or whenever you’re ready to make a healthy change.

* Measure your success. Minneapolis fitness expert Chris Freytag says celebrating those small victories will keep you motivated to pursue your final goal, and there are ways to measure your results beyond stepping on the scale. She recommends keeping a workout journal to record improvements in your weight training, biking or running. Record each session in detail so you can review them later and see how your numbers have progressed. It’s the perfect pick-me-up. * Balance your protein intake throughout the day. Find the sport that appeals to you. Be it boxing, swimming or bike riding, there is a solution out there that works for you and your existing injury.
* Get motivated to work out even when you don’t feel like exercising. Sometimes you just don’t want to work out, but instead of putting it off until tomorrow, Jordan Hasay, a record setting professional runner, says it’s important to set small daily goals. “It’s all about winning the day,” she says. “As a professional athlete, my workouts every day are difficult. It’s all about taking baby steps and really looking at one step at a time and setting individual goals for the day.”
* Don’t let a preexisting injury postpone your workout. After a decade of playing pro football, Ben Leber had trouble running without pain due to his worndown knees. So he took up boxing, as his twiceper-week cardio workout. The sport is physical and gets Leber’s heart rate up, all without putting unneeded pressure on his knees. existing injury.
* Start the day with a proteinpacked breakfast. You know starting the day with protein is important, but your busy schedule means cooking eggs and bacon every morning isn’t possible. Instead, start your morning with a protein smoothie using this recipe: - 1 scoop unflavored protein powder - 1 cup strawberries - 1/2 banana - 1 cup almond milk

PROTECTING YOUR HEALTH: Survey shows
diabetic patients often skip important eye examinations
(BPT) – The leading cause of blindness, diabetes, is steadily growing and is expected to affect one in 10 people worldwide by 2040, the International Diabetes Federation predicts. As prevalent as the condition is, 79 percent of Americans don’t know diabetic eye diseases have no visible symptoms and more than half do not know comprehensive eye examinations can detect diabetes. Those findings are from the 2016 American Eye-Q Survey conducted by the American Optometric Association (AOA). “In 2014 alone, eye doctors found diabetes-related manifestations in 240,000 patients who were not aware they had diabetes, leading to a prompt diagnosis and care which minimizes the risk of complications,” says AOA President Andrea P. Thau, O.D. “A comprehensive eye examination with a doctor of optometry is important Coolsculpting The ugly truth is – we all have stubborn fat. And as we age, gravity and genetics only make things worse. Proper diet and exercise are not enough to keep these unwanted bulges at bay. After weight loss, fat cells get smaller, but the number of fat cells stays the same. Coolsculpting is the solution for getting back the body you want, without surgery or downtime. The Coolsculpting procedure safely delivers precisely-controlled cooling to gently and effectively target unwanted fat cells in the selected area to induce a noticeable, natural-looking reduction in fat bulges. Fat cells under the skin are crystallized (frozen), then die, and your skin remains unaffected. Over time, your body naturally processes

not just to maintain eye and vision health but can be a first line of diagnosis for many systemic diseases.” The AOA advocates for regular, dilated eye exams for those with diabetes, or at risk for diabetes, because the alternatives, like online vision apps, only check for refractive errors like nearsightedness, farsightedness or astigmatism and cannot detect diabetes. “When the eyes are dilated, an eye doctor is able to examine the retina for signs of diabetic eye disease and prescribe a course of treatment to help preserve an individual’s sight,” Dr. Thau says. “Many eye problems show no symptoms until they are in an advanced stage, but early detection and treatment can truly save

a person’s vision. No online app can do that.” The survey, designed to drive education of eye health issues, also found that people diagnosed with diabetes are acutely aware of its effect on eye health and are more likely than the average American to worry about their eye health. In fact, loss of vision is a major fear among members of this group, who report they are three times more concerned about blindness as a diabetes-related side effect than they are about the next largest side effect, kidney failure. Unfortunately, that worry does not always result in people taking action to better care for their eyes and protect their vision. The study found that only 54 percent of people with diabetes who were surveyed regularly visit their doctor of optometry to understand the toll diabetes is taking on their overall eye health. The AOA, the leading authority in eye and vision health care, is committed to educating the public about the relationship between diabetes and eye health, as the annual Eye-Q survey shows that after learning about the topic, many participants said they would be prompted to take steps to ensure their eye health. Some additional findings about attitude changes related to diabetes and eye health include the following: * Learning that the only way to determine if diabetes will cause blindness is through a comprehensive eye exam would prompt 89 percent of Americans to visit a doctor of optometry.

* Understanding that a comprehensive eye exam can sometimes detect and diagnose diabetes sooner than a primary care doctor would prompt 87 percent of Americans to visit a doctor of optometry. * Learning that diabetic eye diseases have no visible symptoms would prompt 79 percent of Americans to visit a doctor of optometry. SMART STEPS TO PRESERVING BRAIN HEALTH
(BPT) – Everyone knows aerobic exercise gets the heart pumping and lifting weights keeps muscles strong. But when it comes to keeping the brain healthy, most people are unsure what to do. As you age, brain health and maintaining memory functions becomes a top concern. Turns out, these issues may begin sooner than you think.
“We tend to think about memory decline as an older person’s issue, but that’s not the case at all,” says Dr. Aimee Gould Shunney, a licensed naturopathic doctor specializing in women’s health and family medicine. “There was a study published in 2012 in the British Medical Journal that examined cognitive function in people age 45 to 70. The researchers did not expect Health & Fitness: Newhall Pharmacy Newhall Pharmacy, a community retail drugstore, is located in the heart of the Santa Clarita Valley. The store is in historical downtown Newhall across from Canyon Theatre Guild and next to the IMAC Medical Group on the corner of 6th and Main streets. This hometown family pharmacy has given personalized service to the Santa Clarita community and provided health care needs to the senior population for the last five years. The local business has a professional health care program with knowledgeable pharmacists: Moazzem Chowdhury, MPharm; Willon (bill) Henderson, PharmD; and Dr.Charles Zandberg, PharmD. services at several different pharmacies. He consistently offers individualized service, while operating a free health clinic, free delivery and flu shot program. Medication consultation is an important service for everyone who walks into Newhall Pharmacy. Prescription medications and over-the-counter items are always well stocked. They accept almost all insurances, offering the lowest discount prices for cash customers, and consulting with doctors to save money for the patients. Moazzem Chowdhury and his team have also been actively involved in philanthropic activities for the last four decades. it, but they found evidence of cognitive decline in the 45-year-old participants as well as the older participants.” She notes there are two basic pathological processes that cause degeneration of the brain: oxidative stress and inflammation. Basically, the standard American diet and lifestyle contribute to those processes. So who is this really an issue for? Men and women of all ages. No matter your age, you can take charge of your brain health by following these five smart steps from Dr. Shunney: Healthy eating “A Mediterranean-type diet that focuses on whole foods, good fats and foods high in antioxidants is a great place to start,” says Dr. Shunney. She encourages her patients to focus on getting omega-3 fats from fish and monounsaturated fats from olives, olive oil, nuts and seeds. She also recommends increasing fruits (especially berries) and beans (they’re packed with antioxidants). What’s more, research shows a little cocoa, coffee and red wine can act as antioxidants and are beneficial in low to moderate amounts. Supplements In addition to a quality multivitamin, Dr. Shunney recommends an omega-3 supplement. “Getting enough omega-3s is one of the most important measures we can take,” she says. “DHA is the dominant omega-3 in the brain. Just like we need to make sure babies have enough DHA to grow their brain, we need to make sure older people get enough DHA to keep their brains healthy.” She suggests Omega Memory by Nordic Naturals. It’s a DHA-dominant omega-3 formula that also includes other brain healthy ingredients: curcumin, phosphatidylcholine and huperzine A. Learn more at www.nordicnaturals.com.

Regular sleep Poor sleep is a risk factor for cognitive decline. “Studies show both sleep deprivation and sleeping too much impact cognitive performance,” Dr. Shunney says. “A good goal is to go to bed around the same time each night, sleep for 7-8 hours, and get up around the same time every morning.” Thinking activities “I recommend anything that keeps your mind working,” says Dr. Shunney. “Activities that require things to be arranged or puzzles that have to be put together. Crossword puzzles, word games and board games are all great.” She also notes some activities to avoid: “It’s important to limit certain activities. The constant scanning of social media and newsfeeds eliminates creativity and keeps us on edge. Limit the time you spend

doing that and instead do things that cause you to explore and think and put ideas together on your own.” Socialize “Social isolation has been linked with cognitive decline,” says Dr. Shunney. “In one study, people who
were lonely experienced cognitive decline at a 20 percent faster rate than people who were not lonely.” Make time to take a foreign language class, join a Toastmaster’s Club, take a watercolor class - anything that connects you regularly to other people.

THE HIDDEN BENEFITS OF WATER (MC) – Dehydration is a dangerous condition that can cause a host of complications and even prove fatal in severe cases. But as dangerous as dehydration can be, many cases are entirely preventable. The best way to prevent dehydration is to drink enough water. In addition, water loss is accelerated during strenuous exercise, highlighting the emphasis men and women must place on drinking enough water during their workouts. •Water can help people maintain healthy weights. Dieting fads come and go, but water is a mainstay for people who want to control their caloric intake in an effort to maintain healthy weights. Water has zero calories, so reaching for a bottle or glass of water instead of a soda, lemonade or another caloric beverage can help people keep the pounds off. A study from researchers at the University of Texas Health Science Center found that even diet soda enhances weight gain by as much as 41 percent. In addition, soda has been linked to conditions such as obesity, diabetes and tooth decay. No such association exists with water. • Water helps to fight fatigue. The fatiguefighting properties of
water are another of its lesser known benefits. When the body is not adequately hydrated, it can experience muscle soreness. And fitness enthusiasts who do not drink enough water may notice their bodies require extensive recovery time after working out. Each of those consequences can be prevented by drinking enough water, and doing so can even improve performance, as studies have shown that just a 3 percent loss of body weight due to dehydration can cause as much as a 10 percent drop in performance level. • Water can improve the appearance of the skin. turn dry and flaky and feel tight. In addition, dry skin is more likely to wrinkle than adequately hydrated skin. Getting water to the skin can be tricky, as the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Medicine and Public Health notes that water will reach all the other organs of the body before it reaches the skin. But the school recommends applying a hydrating moisturizer within two minutes of leaving the bath or shower and drinking at least eight glasses of water a day to ensure the skin is getting enough water. • Water helps the
gastrointestinal tract. Water can help maintain normal bowel function. When the body lacks sufficient fluid, the colon will pull water from stools in an effort to stay hydrated. That can lead to constipation, a condition in which people experience difficulty emptying their bowels. By drinking enough water, people can ensure their colon will not have to pull water from stools to stay hydrated, thereby helping them stay regular. Water helps the body in myriad ways, many of which might surprise people unaware of just how valuable water can be to the body.

WHY DENTAL HYGIENE IS ESSENTIAL FOR OVERALL HEALTH (MC) – The importance of maintaining clean teeth and healthy gums goes beyond having fresh breath and a white smile. Many people are surprised to discover that oral hygiene plays an integral role in overall health. Research indicates that
oral health mirrors the condition of the body as a whole. Also, regular dental visits can alert dentists about overall health and pinpoint if a person is at a risk for chronic disease. An oral health check-up also may be the first indication of a potential health issue

not yet evident to a general medical doctor. Heart disease According to the Academy of General Dentistry, there is a distinct relationship between periodontal disease and conditions such as heart disease and stroke. Joint teams at the University of Bristol in the United Kingdom and the Royal College of Surgeons in Dublin, Ireland, found that people with bleeding gums from poor dental hygiene could have an increased risk of heart disease. Bacteria from the mouth is able to enter the bloodstream when bleeding gums are present. That bacteria can stick to platelets and subsequently form blood clots. This interrupts the flow of blood to the heart and may trigger a heart attack. Brushing and flossing twice daily and rinsing with mouthwash can remove bacteria and keep gums healthy. Facial pain The Office of the Surgeon General says
infections of the gums that support the teeth can lead to facial and oral pain. Gingivitis, which is an early stage of gum disease, as well as advanced gum disease, affects more than 75 percent of the American population. Dental decay can lead to its own share of pain. Maintaining a healthy mouth can fend off decay and infections, thereby preventing pain. Pancreatic cancer In 2007, the Harvard School of Public Health reported a link between gum disease and pancreatic cancer. In the ongoing study, 51,000 men were followed and data was collected beginning in 1986. The Harvard researchers found that men with a history of gum disease had a 64 percent increased risk of pancreatic cancer compared with men who had never had gum disease. The greatest risk for pancreatic cancer among this group was in men with recent tooth loss. However, the study

In your two-to-threeminute cryotherapy treatment at ICE Recovery & Wellness, the temperature during your personalized session will hover around -240 degrees Fahrenheit. Using gasiform nitrogen to lower your skin’s surface temperature by 30 to 50 degrees, your personal cryotherapy chamber will prompt your skin to react to the cold by sending a message to your brain. This messaging acts as a stimulant to your body’s regulatory system, resulting in a “scan,” identifying injury, inflammation and tissue that isn’t operating to its full potential. The extreme temperature also stimulates your body to release
endorphins and antiinflammatory molecules. The process speeds toxins and other inflammatory properties into your blood stream to be processed and naturally eliminated. It’s the ideal treatment for anyone who wants to reduce inflammation and pain; build collagen; heal faster; detox; boost metabolism and stimulate the immune system. Cryotherapy has been linked to positive outcomes with users suffering from arthritis, MS, athletic injury, surgical wounds and more. ICE Recovery & Wellness is offering $20 “first freeze” sessions that include free NormaTec compression, as well as discounted student-athlete packages. Call for details.
