Welcome Dear Reader: Rooted in old west history and folklore, the Santa Clarita Valley, or ‘SCV,’ is a great place to call home. Celebrating its 30th Anniversary this year, the city of Santa Clarita has grown exponentially in the last 30 years. Once acres and acres of rolling hills and open spaces, complete with grazing cattle and livestock; the SCV is now a metropolis of homes, schools, medical facilities, shopping and recreation. Close to Los Angeles and its environs, the SCV is the perfect distance from L.A. to still enjoy a bit of city living and, for some, country living at its finest. Filled with great schools, shopping, family neighborhoods and friendly, giving people, the Santa Clarita Valley has a lot to offer. It is a comfortable place to not only raise a family, but to conduct business as well. Many businesses have chosen to relocate to the SCV thereby avoiding the commute to other Southern California areas. We hope that this publication will be helpful in introducing new and old residents to local businesses, parks, schools, shopping and community events; or perhaps reacquaint you with something that you may have forgotten. Happy Anniversary Santa Clarita! Thanks for reading.

SCV Communities Newhall The oldest community in Santa Clarita, Newhall was established when venture capitalist Henry Mayo Newhall purchased 143,000 acres that were previously part of a Mexican land grant. The first commercially successful oil refinery in the Western United States operated there, and Newhall was the site of the Santa Clarita Valley’s first secondary school, William S. Hart High School. Various entities were named for silent film star William S. Hart, who retired in Newhall, and members of the public tour his home today. The town’s history includes many colorful stories of the Old West, and Newhall has continued to be the site of Western lore through film studios such as Melody Ranch.

Valencia Built in the 1960s by the Newhall Land & Farming Co., Valencia is a master-planned community known for its neatly-groomed housing developments. In its earliest days, it was a railroad thoroughfare and home to ranches with onion fields, but after obtaining the name “Valencia,” the town shifted in purpose, becoming the site of modern retail stores, including the area’s first mall. California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) is located in Valencia, as well as the main campus of College of the Canyons.

Saugus Before various communities in Santa Clarita were created, such as Canyon Country and Valencia, a large swath of the valley was called Saugus.

l Clouds drift over Santa Clarita looking east from Sierra Highway in January. Dan Watson/The Signal With major crossroads Valencia Blvd. and Bouquet Canyon Road, Saugus is still a central point of connection, as it was in 1887 when the Saugus train depot opened. In the mid-20th century, the Plum Canyon area was occupied by hog farmers, while Saugus Speedway, originally a rodeo stadium and later used for auto racing, drew thousands of fans. The oldest restaurant in Santa Clarita, The Saugus Café, opened in 1887 and is now one of the oldest restaurants in Los Angeles County.

Canyon Country Before it was officially named in 1963, Canyon Country was defined by such monikers as Saugus, Mint Canyon, Soledad and Lang. Settlers Thomas and Martha Mitchell opened a school in their home in 1872, establishing the first school district in Santa Clarita, and

today it is one of the oldest in Los Angeles County. The “golden spike” ceremony at Lang Station in 1876 connected the Southern Pacific Rail line from Los Angeles to San Francisco. And Route 6, which was Canyon Country’s main commercial center in the 20th century, was a major artery connecting L.A. to the East Coast.

independent township of Val Verde in 1928. A federal grant paid for a local swimming pool in the 1930s, and the celebration brought out “Gone With the Wind” actress Hattie McDaniels, who would be the first African-American to win an Academy Award. Today Val Verde, situated off the 126 Freeway, is mainly known as a quiet area to raise a family.

Val Verde

Stevenson Ranch

In the Santa Clarita Valley’s northwestern corner is a community that began as a Mexican mining town. Val Verde, which means “Green Valley,” held a progressive stance in the early 20th century when it became a popular recreation area for African-Americans from Los Angeles who were experiencing segregation. Landowners in the 1920s sold off parcels, calling it “Eureka Villa,” but it became the

Perhaps best known for being situated just south of the towering thrill rides of Magic Mountain, Stevenson Ranch is an unincorporated residential section of the Santa Clarita Valley. A little less than 7 square miles in size, it includes about 1,000 acres of area for open space, parks and recreation. The master-planned community is adjacent to Mentryville, a historic oil mining town founded in the late 19th century. The Signal • 2017

During its development, many Stevenson Ranch streets were named for authors, and today Stevenson Ranch boasts two commercial centers with large national chain stores.

Castaic The northernmost part of the Santa Clarita Valley, Castaic is an unincorporated community best known for its recreation area, Castaic Lake. Historically, the area was referred to by the Chumash as “Kashtiq,” which means “eyes,” and in the 19th century some maps call it “Castec.” It was a Southern Pacific Railroad junction on the line from Piru to Saugus, and much of the land was settled by ranchers. Today it is still a stop for travelers going over the Ridge Route on Interstate 5, but Castaic is also a growing community of families, with schools, churches and destination shopping.

Acton A small town at the base of the Sierra Pelona Mountains, Acton has a large number of ranch-style homes, some with livestock and equestrian facilities. Residents live in both the valley and the foothills of Acton, which has a rich history of gold, copper and titanium ore mining. Because former Governor Henry T. Gage owned a mine there, Acton was considered as a possible location for the California state capital at the turn of the century. Shambala Preserve, owned by actress Tippi Hedren, is a rescue facility for wild felines, and one of many filming locations in Acton.

Agua Dulce With a name literally meaning “sweet water” in Spanish, Agua Dulce’s earliest history includes settlements by

The area was named for well-known bandit, Tiburcio

History of Santa Clarita T

he earliest known inhabitants of the Santa Clarita Valley are the Tataviam, a historic tribe of semi-nomadic natives who date back further than 450 A.D., according to Dr. Laurie Solis, author of “Tataviam: People Who Face the Sun.” Artifacts from this Native American group, such as axe heads and woven baskets, document their existence and practices in this area. Writings tell us about several Europeans who came to the Santa Clarita Valley in the 18th century. They included Spanish priest Father Francisco Garces, explorer Gaspar de Portola and Franciscan missionary Father Juan Crespi, who named the Santa Clara River for Saint Clare in 1769. While the history books place the first discovery of California gold at Sutter’s Mill in 1848, a letter written to the Mexican governor in 1842 claims the precious metal was first found in the SCV’s Placerita Canyon by Francisco Lopez. According to writings about his claim, Lopez awoke from a nap under a tree and was picking wild onions when he first spotted the gold. Local leaders placed a marker by the tree, recognizing the site of what was known as the “Oak of the Golden Dream.” Santa Clarita’s more notorious past involved legendary bandit Tiburcio Vasquez, who hid in the unusual rock formations of Agua Dulce, now L.A. County’s Vasquez Rocks Natural Area Park. The jagged sandstone successfully hid Vasquez from

Dan Watson/The Signal authorities in 1874, but he was later captured in Los Angeles. At the same time in history, the east end of the valley now known as Canyon Country was being settled by Thomas and Martha Mitchell and their family. They established a school in their one-room house, which eventually grew to become the Sulphur Springs School District. Henry Mayo Newhall, a businessman from Massachusetts, purchased Rancho San Francisco in 1875. It was previously a Mexican land grant in what is now Santa Clarita that was willed to Don Ignacio del Valle in 1853. As 19th century railroad construction was changing the landscape, a township was

established in the Santa Clarita Valley which was called “Newhall.” The western side of the valley was the beginning of California’s commercial oil industry when Charles Mentry began an operation in Pico Canyon in 1876. Oil was pumped in Mentryville and piped to a refinery in Newhall, where it was transported by rail. Pico oil became Standard Oil Company of California and continued operating until 1990. Many parts of the Santa Clarita Valley have been popular sites for filming television and movies. Famous directors D.W. Griffith, Charlie Chaplin and Steven Spielberg have each used Santa Clarita locations in their movies. Silent film star William S.

Hart purchased the Horseshoe Ranch in Newhall from Babcock Smith in 1921, a place on which he later built a Spanish Colonial style home he called La Loma de los Vientos. Today it is often referred to as the Hart Mansion. The concept of a master-planned community called “Valencia” came from Newhall Land and Farming Company in the 1960s. Good schools and affordable housing became drawing cards that would cause the City of Santa Clarita, established in 1987, to boom, doubling in size in the last few decades. Based on a record of innovation, growth and education, the Santa Clarita Valley is likely to continue making history for a long time to come. The Signal • 2017

A Valencia neighbor since 1970, California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) provides rigorous arts education in six schools, all housed under one roof: Art, Critical Studies, Dance, Film/ Video, Music, and Theater. Its outreach programs include the nationally emulated CalArts Community Arts Partnership (CAP), and the Roy and Edna Disney/CalArts Theater (REDCAT) in Downtown Los Angeles. Founded by Walt Disney as a college where different branches of the arts come together and inspire each other, CalArts is recognized as one of the world’s foremost innovators of creative education. Now under the leadership of the Institute’s fourth president, Ravi S. Rajan, who took office on June 1, 2017, CalArts continues its mission to challenge artists to create work that matters globally to the state of culture today and in the future.
