■ Avita Medical's new Valencia offices.
From the Editor Thirty years ago this month, Santa Clarita became a city, after efforts to split off from Los Angeles County proved too ambitious, and it hasn’t stopped growing since. What started as a city of 39.5 square miles, 30 years and 32 annexations later, now encompasses more than 57 square miles. The 1990 census recorded a population of a little more than 110,000. That’s just about doubled since. What’s changing, and will shape the Santa Clarita Valley in the years and decades to come, is the kind of growth that’s taking place. Sure, we remain to some degree a bedroom community for those who commute down the 5. But more and more, this is becoming a place to work as well as to live. While Newhall Ranch could eventually
add 20,000 homes to the valley, it also includes more than 11 million square feet of commercial space. With Scorpion’s new headquarters just opened and Logix Federal Credit Union’s due for completion next year, jobs that used to be elsewhere are becoming more prevalent here. All of which means that this valley will continue to need to figure out the force that has long shaped it: growth.

From Our Pages: The Year's Top Business Stories The Santa Clarita Valley is undoubtedly in a time of robust growth, in ways that are transforming the valley from a bedroom community and branch office into more of a self-contained city. That becomes clear from a review of the local business stories of 2017. We chose the opening of Scorpion’s new headquarters building in October as our top story for a couple of reasons: it adds another corporate headquarters that could have located elsewhere, and with it more than 400 jobs. Meanwhile, steel is rising for Logix Federal Credit Union’s headquarters, scheduled to open late next year. Together, they represent good paying jobs that contribute to the valley’s appeal as a place to live and work.
Scorpion headquarters opens Scorpion, the Santa Clarita-based internet marketing firm, moved into its new 100,000-square-foot headquarters overlooking Magic Mountain Parkway at Interstate 5. The company held a grand opening on Oct. 27, and its 400 local employees moved in a week later. Scorpion provides website design, search engine optimization, pay-per-click advertising, video advertising, online reputation management, and social media services. Its clients include legal, healthcare, franchise, and home service companies. “The most immediate reason for the move is that we need the square footage,” said Matthew Shepherd, Scorpion’s chief financial officer and the executive in charge of the move. “As we kept growing, our situation became less than ideal, as we expanded to multiple floors in multiple buildings.” Nearly two-thirds of the employees who work in the Valencia headquarters also live in Santa Clarita. Shepherd attributes that to organic growth. “Most of our hires come as referrals from current employees, and since many of them live here, it makes sense that their friends do as well.”
State approves first phase of Newhall Ranch California’s Department of Fish and Wildlife approved plans from developers of Newhall Ranch to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and protect an endangered fish species. On June 14, the department certified a final additional environmental analysis, declared those two issues resolved, and re-approved the project plan. Fish and Wildlife originally approved the project in December 2010 after preparing and certifying an environmental impact report. In 2015, the California Supreme Court directed the department to more closely review the project’s impact on greenhouse gas emissions and measures to protect the unarmored three spine stickleback fish. In response to the court’s orders, the developer revised its greenhouse mitigation plan. FivePoint owns Newhall Land, which developed Valencia over the last half century. Newhall Ranch sits on 15,000 acres near the intersection of state route 126
biotech pioneer Alfred Mann launched Advanced Bionics and other projects on the site. Mann sold the property in 2014 to Valencia Biomedical Park LLC, a venture between funds managed by Oaktree Capital Management and Intertex Cos., a local developer.

and I-5. In September, FivePoint reached a settlement on Newhall Ranch with key national and state environmental groups, the Santa Ynez Band of Chumash Indians and the Wishtoyo Foundation, a leading Native American organization. The groups dropped their court challenge to the project in exchange for funding for additional environmental protections.
IAC Commerce Center phase one finished, leased The first phase of the new nine-building 1.3 million square-foot IAC Commerce Center in Valencia, one of the largest commercial projects in the region, was completed. CBRE and national developer IAC Properties added two tenants, Accurate Freight Systems and Covercraft, to the 116-acre project, next to the Valencia Commerce Center. Covercraft, a manufacturer of exterior and interior automotive protection products, leased 64,732 square feet and will use the space to manufacture and distribute vehicle covers and other products. CBRE’s Matt Dierckman represented the tenant. Accurate Freight, represented by Yair Haimoff of NAI Capital, is a transportation company active regionally and nationwide. The company leased 52,063 square feet at 29115 Avenue Valley View. The Phase 1 buildings vary from 93,600 square feet to 187,540 square feet in size, and the project offers build-to-suits as large as 560,000 square feet. CBRE’s Craig Peters and Doug Sonderegger are the leasing agents for the project.
Tech entrepreneur’s plans for Sand Canyon CC A year after buying Robinson Ranch Golf Club, tech entrepreneur Steve Kim has renamed it Sand Canyon Country Club and unveiled ambitious plans to build a hotel and resort on the 200-acre property. The plan seeks to establish the first destination resort in the Santa Clarita Valley. Golf architects Ted Robinson Sr. and Ted Robinson Jr., designed two 18-hole courses, which opened in 2000, on the 400-acre property. Kim first got involved at Robinson Ranch as part of an investment group that owned 20 percent of the property. In 2016, he
bought the remaining 80 percent. Years of drought forced the closing of 18 holes, and then last summer, the Sand Fire scorched nine holes of the closed Mountain Course and neighboring land in Angeles National Forest. The Robinson Ranch clubhouse and homes on the property were spared. Allowing nine holes of the Mountain course to revert to nature, adding desert plants and other water conservation measures have cut water consumption by 70 percent from pre-drought levels, Kim said.
The first phase of the long-awaited Needham Ranch business park, near the southern end of the Santa Clarita Valley, is scheduled to be built over the next year. Long eyed by developers, Needham Ranch sits between Highway 14 and downtown Newhall. Trammell Crow Company and investor Clarion Partners have bought 54 acres of land for a development dubbed The Center. Phase one of the project is part of a larger 132-acre site approved for up 4.2 million square feet of industrial space. Phase one is expected to begin delivering commercial space during the third quarter of 2018. It covers 869,760 square feet and plans to include seven buildings. In June of this year, water retailer Newhall County Water District (NCWD) met with the developer to find out what was required for the new project and was poised to lay pipes for one of the largest commercial projects under development in Los Angeles County. NCWD entered into an agreement of construction of “water system improvements” with the initial developer, Gate King Properties, in 2010.

Boston Scientific renews/office park rebrands
Boston Scientific signed a ten-year lease renewal for 342,000 square feet of space in the newly rebranded Southern California Innovation Park, formerly Mann Biomedical Park. The company’s Valencia operations are part of its Neuromodulation Group, which makes microelectronic implantable technology for treating chronic pain and neurological diseases. The group had 2015 sales of $512 million, about six percent of the Marlborough, Mass.-based company’s total revenue of $8.06 billion, according to its annual report. Boston Scientific is staying in two buildings: a 180,000 square-foot office and engineering facility originally built for Advanced Bionics, and a 161,000 square-foot building that houses offices, a training center and warehouse space. The 160-acre Southern California Innovation Park was originally built by Lockheed Corp. as an outpost of its Burbank-based top-secret Skunk Works. Later,
The self-proclaimed “king of the thousand-seat concert venue in Southern California” is about to open for business in Santa Clarita. Sterling Venue Ventures opened The Canyon-Santa Clarita, its fifth Southern California location, at Westfield Valencia Town Center mall. The 1,100-seat live music and dining venue will occupy 17,000 square feet encompassing seven previous business sites. The 1,100-seat facility will offer amenities including premium dining and a two full bars, dinner seating, VIP seating, private rooms, general admission (standing), dancing – and, of course, music. Sterling started the company in 2001 with the Canyon Club in Agoura Hills. He’s since opened the Sabon in Beverly Hills and the Rose in Pasadena, and manages the Libbey Bowl, an outdoor venue in Ojai. “Living in Agoura, we understand Santa Clarita,” Sterling said. “We know our audience. Nobody in either place wants to drive to downtown LA for a show. They also don’t want to have to stand up for three hours.”

SANTA CLARITA VALLEY BUSINESS JOURNAL
DECEMBER 2017
2017 Marked by Surge in Construction, Investment Here's how we covered the top business Stores in the SCV over the course of 2017:
Princess Cruise Lines hit with $40 million penalty These were high crimes on the high seas – and in December 2016 came the high price. Santa Clarita-based Princess Cruise Lines was assessed a king-sized $40 million penalty in a plea deal involving illegal ocean pollution and a cover-up by some employees, federal prosecutors revealed. Princess, headquartered on Town Center Drive, pleaded guilty in Miami to seven federal charges – and the $40 million fine represents what U.S. Attorney Wifredo Ferrer said was the largest of its kind, ever. The plea deal also requires Carnival Corp., parent company of the Princess line, to submit 78 cruise ships across its eight brands to a fiveyear environmental-compliance program overseen by a judge.
AMS, College launch apprenticeship A new apprentice program will give 13 select students at College of the Canyons a chance to earn money while they learn. The Canyons Apprenticeship Program (CAP), launched in cooperation
with AMS Fulfillment, is one of two new apprenticeship programs at the college. The second program is in collaboration with the California Advanced Manufacturing Apprenticeship Collaborative South (CAMAC-South). The program with AMS Fulfillment, a third-party provider of warehouse management, order management and fulfillment services, will provide 13 individuals with training in warehousing and shipping this year.
Avita Medical moving to SCV Attracted by a growing cluster of medical device and bioscience companies, Avita Medical moved its headquarters staff of 25 from Northridge to Santa Clarita in January. The company specializes in the treatment of wounds and skin defects, including chronic wounds, acute burns and aesthetics. Avita leased 12,000 square feet of space on Avenue Stanford, with Richard Ramirez, senior associate of CBRE Group’s Los Angeles North office, as its broker.
SCV sees hotel boom, but meeting space lags Business travelers will find a greater variety of hotel room options in Santa Clarita in the coming years, as builders add new hospitality space to the local market’s inventory. But some wonder if demand will keep up with the supply

of rooms that are either being built or are on the drawing board. As for hotel meeting space, the Hyatt Regency Valencia and its ballroom will remain the only game in town for the foreseeable future. After two years of nearly unprecedented occupancy rates, a handful of Santa Clarita hotel projects have either broken ground or are in the planning stages. In the closing weeks of 2016, local hotels were on track for a 90 percent occupancy rate, according to Jason Crawford, Santa Clarita’s economic development manager. “In 2015 we had 84 percent,” he said. According to Crawford, Magic Mountain amusement park visitors, corporate travel, film and TV industry traffic, along with sports tourism are the fuel that helped stoke demand for local lodging.
Bestway: Thriving among the big brands Raffi Haddad, owner of Bestway Renta-Car in Valencia, comes from a family of entrepreneurs that goes back four generations. His father started out as a blacksmith and got into the car repair business in 1987. Haddad worked with him and a partner, initially repairing car bodies and electrical systems in Canoga Park. That initial foray didn’t work out. But shortly after that business closed, with five running cars as his remaining assets, Haddad discovered the path he is still on. He’s been in the automobile business for thirty years now, and he’s faced more than his share of obstacles.
Three generations deliver “Another Andy Gump” Over its 60-year history, Andy Gump Temporary Services has seen its growth fueled by a knack among three successive generations of family leadership for seizing opportunities and moving the company in new directions. Today the company, based in Santa Clarita since 1985, has annual revenues of $24 million, but its origins are humble. Massena “Andy” Gump, the Colorado-born founder, didn’t initially plan to go into the temporary site business until an ordinance was passed in the 1950s requiring portable restrooms on construction sites. During a run hauling Christmas trees, Gump happened upon a man looking to sell a septic pump truck for $300. Gump bought it, designed and built
a portable toilet out of plywood and steel tubing, and a business was born.
Newhall Ranch sets carbon neutral course Construction of FivePoint’s Newhall Ranch master-planned community is expected take 20 years once the first shovel hits the ground. Approval of the multi-billion dollar project, has taken even longer. To paraphrase Churchill, 2017 represented the end of the beginning for a project on the banks of the Santa Clara River that promises to have as great an impact on the Santa Clarita Valley as Valencia, a development of comparable size that was built in a very different time. Once complete, Newhall Ranch will include 21,500 homes, including rental and affordable housing, in nine villages. The project will set aside 10,000 acres of open space, and produce 60,000 permanent new jobs, according to FivePoint, the successor company to Newhall Land Co.
Med Tech Solutions settles into Valencia Many companies find that Santa Clarita is a welcoming environment for business, and Med Tech Solutions, a firm that provides computer network assistance and storage to health care organizations, is among them. With its new headquarters on Avenue Stanford in Valencia, Med Tech Solutions completed its move to Santa Clarita from Pasadena in September. The company provides a range of information technology services, including hosting servers, desktops and storage, which is provided in Med Tech’s server cloud that the company built. Engineers and technicians provide on-site IT support for servers and workstations at practices or health care organizations’ facilities.

At the very least, it’s a niche that breaks new comedic ground, sometimes literally. A trailer for the show shows stars Drew Barrymore and Timothy Olyphant chatting hopefully about getting a new listing (“It’s a beautiful property. Great location, new kitchen.”) while digging a hole to so they can messily dispose of parts of a corpse.
Tom Thornbury dies at 74 Tom Thornbury, founder of several local manufacturing companies, died Jan. 8 at the age of 74 from complications due to ALS, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. The pull of California sunshine led him to transfer from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology to the University of Southern California’s School of En-
gineering. A longtime Valencia resident, Thornbury started three companies that are based here: Neotech Products LLC, Softub, and, with his wife Angie, La Fête Design.
Two real estate deals worth $27M Two prominent local buildings were sold in Santa Clarita, one of an office and industrial building, the other a retail strip center in the heart of Valencia. MannKind Corp. is selling its Valencia Gateway headquarters for $17.3 million to a private real estate investment trust. And a little more than three years after buying it and sprucing it up, Trion Properties has sold Valencia Town Center Plaza, a retail strip center in Valencia. In a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, MannKind said it is selling its property, which include manufacturing space and land, to Rexford Industrial Realty.

Valencia-based producers of a Star Trek themed fan film settled a lawsuit filed by owners of the science fiction franchise’s intellectual property. The crowdsource-funded film and a planned sequel expand on a storyline from the original 1960s NBC television series created by Gene Roddenbury. In late 2015, Paramount Pictures and CBS Studios sued Axanar Productions and its owner, Alec Peters, over the short film, “Prelude to Axanar.” According to a joint announcement of the settlement, “Axanar and Mr. Peters acknowledge that both films were not approved by Paramount or CBS, and that both works crossed boundaries acceptable to CBS and Paramount relating to copyright law.”
the company has announced plans for a reverse stock split.
Bank of Santa Clarita to close branch Following trends by many in the banking industry, the Bank of Santa Clarita officially closed its branch office on Golden Valley Road. The outlet, located at The Plaza at Golden Valley, had not been open to the public save to occasionally meet customers to sign documents on transactions. The bank had been using the branch for administrative reasons, according the bank’s chief officer. Use of the branch has gradually dropped over the years until the bank decided that in light of its growing mobile banking services, it should just close the branch altogether.
Local firm to manage Hart HS What’s the future of MannKind? expansion MannKind Corp. has built an in-house sales team that hit the road to boost sluggish sales of Afrezza, its inhalable form of insulin. The question the company faces is how much time the new sales team will have to do their jobs. The Valencia’s biopharmaceutical company’s stock has traded below Nasdaq’s minimum $1 per share threshold since August. In September, Nasdaq gave the company notice that it would be delisted unless its stock closed above $1 per share for 10 consecutive trading days by March 13, 2017. As that deadline approaches,
Valencia-based Lundgren Management will serve as construction manager for a new classroom wing at Hart High School and projects in two nearby cities, according to the firm. The Hart High project will add a two-story, 23,431-square-foot classroom building, two new tennis courts and campuswide infrastructure improvements. Local school and community college districts have passed bond issues in recent years that have made up for reductions in state funding. Flewelling & Moody Architecture designed the Hart High addition,

which is being funded by voter-approved Measure SA. The building will replace temporary classroom space.
Six Flags launches “mixed reality” coaster The latest twist for visitors to Six Flags Magic Mountain involves a new version of virtual reality headset that lets them enter a world of “mixed reality.” This will let them fly a jet, traverse a wormhole, fire weapons, and save the planet from an alien drone invasion. They’ll do all this while strapped into the New Revolution Galactic Attack roller coaster. Originally opened in 1976 as “The Great American Revolution,” to coincide with the American Bicentennial, it was the first coaster in the world with a vertical loop.

Digital Jungle moves to SCV Digital Jungle, a post-production company that works with motion picture, television and online producers, has set up shop in new headquarters on Constellation Rd. in Santa Clarita. The new 5,000-squarefoot headquarters will be home to Digital Jungle Post, its core operation, and Digital Jungle Pictures, a recently created feature film development and production studio. Dennis Ho, Digital Jungle’s founder and president, got his start designing on-air promotional spots for ABC in the 1970’s, “pre-Disney, pre-Capital Cities.”

Public and private Newhall investments The economic redevelopment of Newhall, Santa Clarita’s oldest community, is picking up pace with public and private investments in spaces that opened in March. The city is spending $165,000 over three years to lease the former Repertory East Playhouse on Main Street. By renting the space for arts and entertainment events, the city hopes to recoup part of its $4,600 monthly rent. Private investment includes a new True Value Hardware store and long-awaited branch of the U.S. Postal Service on Lyons Avenue. They will be joined later this year by Santa Clarita’s first Burgerim gourmet mini-burger outlet. The chain was founded in Israel (its name means “many burgers” in Hebrew) and came to Southern California last year.

Stonefire expands with investment Since sisters Mary and Maureen Harrigan started Stonefire Grill in Valencia in 2000, it has grown to eight locations and employs 1,000 workers. Now, a majority investment by a private equity firm, Goode Partners LLC of New York, likely means the business will continue to grow. To make the transition go easier, Stonefire management plans to make the expansion proceed at a moderate speed. Three new locations are planned this year, and they will maintain the same cautious pace thereafter. The goal is to open two to three locations each year.

What’s in SCV’s residential pipeline? Like most of California, the Santa Clarita Valley faces a housing shortage, due largely to new supply lagging demand by a wide margin. “In the last decade, California has built an average of 80,000 homes a year, far below the 180,000 homes needed a year to keep up with housing growth from 2015-2025,” according to a recent state report, California’s Housing Future: Challenges and Opportunities. “The housing growth that

Remembering Barry Gump Barry Gump, retired president of Andy Gump Temporary Site Services, died April 17 at age 74 at his home in Valencia. Over his quarter century as a business owner and community leader in the Santa Clarita Valley, Gump built a reputation for quiet
generosity to numerous local charities, an unstinting work ethic, and an unassuming ability to get things done as a member or, more likely chairman, of numerous boards and committees. Famous for the tagline “Another … Andy Gump,” the company’s portable restroom units are a common sight across Southern California. The privately held firm also provides solar-powered multi-unit trailers, temporary power and fencing for construction sites, and storage containers.

A new overseas office, still in the works, will be located in Perth, Australia, and will be the company’s base of operations for Asia and the Pacific Rim. The company, which designs and manufactures high-end supported gloves used by auto racing mechanics and others in various industries, is experiencing boom times.

H2Scan partners with French firm Valencia technology firm H2Scan, which makes hydrogen monitoring and measurement devices for industrial applications, has entered into an equity investment and strategic development deal with French engineering firm Altran. “We’re planning on doubling our revenue this year and more than doubling it next year, said Mike Allman, chairman and CEO of H2scan. “So it’s a big growth opportunity and something that the local economy should be proud of.” The deal, terms of which are confidential, will make Altran a part owner of H2Scan, and Altran will have a seat on the Valencia company’s board. In addition to the equity investment, Altran will be the preferred vendor with new H2Scan applications.

Medical-device manufacturer Neotech Products LLC makes products for neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) as one of its main lines of business. But that’s not how the Valencia-based company got its name. Cofounders Tom Thornbury and Paul Choksi, both biomedical engineers, and Arnold “Doc” Heyman, M.D., a urologist and entrepreneur, chose the name based on “neo,” Greek for new. Now marking its 30th anniversary, the company makes products for hospital and home-based care and has revenue in the $10 million - $100 million range. Craig McCrary, the company’s president and COO, has been with the company for 26 years and was its second employee (today it employs 52, and works with 20 consultants around the country). Heyman and McCrary spoke recently with us.

nounced the purchase of CU Bancorp, corporate parent of California United Bank. California United, which has a regional office on Magic Mountain Parkway in Valencia, will be merged into Pacific Western Bank. The deal is valued at about $705 million. California United is a California state-chartered bank with about $3 billion dollars in assets and nine branches located in Los Angeles, Orange, Ventura and San Bernardino counties. The combined company would have approximately $25.0 billion in assets and 87 branches, with some branches expected to be closed.

Impact of driverless cars To imagine life in the Santa Clarita Valley in ten years, just visualize getting into the car you use (but don’t own), and relaxing behind a steering wheel you’re unlikely to need to touch. If it all sounds a little foreign, take comfort in the fact that our forebears thrived through earlier transportation revolutions. Newhall and Saugus are offsprings of the railroad, Valencia and the city of Santa Clarita of the automobile and freeways that serve them. Within a decade, the shift to networked autonomous vehicles, primarily electric powered, will kick into high gear. Even sooner, look for changes in longhaul trucking, which currently employs 1.7 million Americans as drivers.
AMG thrives amid public-sector boom A surge in public-sector construction throughout California is keeping Santa Clarita-based contractor AMG & Associates busy, with clients that range from public school and college districts to the federal government. Ninety percent of the company’s work is in the public sector, mostly in California, said founder and CEO Albert Giacomazzi, and business is booming. “We’re way past the recession, and with the 2016 election behind us, there’s a clear attitude that economic conditions are improving,” he said.

FivePoint raises $320M in IPO Shares in Five Point Holdings LLC, owner of Newhall Ranch and other large planned communities in coastal California, began trading May 10 on the New York Stock Exchange. On May 15, the company, better known as FivePoint, said the IPO was closed and raised about $320 million, after deducting underwriting discounts and commissions and before offering expenses. In addition, FivePoint received $100 million from a private placement to Lennar Corp., which owns 40 percent of FivePoint’s stock. On May 9, the Aliso Viejo-based developer said it would issue 21 million shares of common stock in an initial public offering at an opening price of $14 per share.
Apprenticeship program trains skilled workers A three-way partnership fueled by state and federal workforce development grants that will add 16 skilled jobs in the SCV launched in June. AMS Fulfillment Services is collaborating with College of the Canyons and Goodwill Southern California. AMS will gain the apprentices, the college will help train them, and Goodwill is adding its expertise building and running apprenticeship programs. “The jobs that need to be filled in shipping, receiving, inventory management and fulfillment are the flip side of the jobs that are going away in the brick-andmortar retail sector,” said Jeffrey Forrest, the college’s vice president, workforce development.
The Millennial factor Millennials, those born in the 1980’s and ’90s, have become America’s largest generation, passing the baby boomers. The oldest millennials are entering their peak earning years, buying homes and making investment decisions. As they do so, they are reshaping the financial services industry with tools and preferences that are unlike earlier generations. Last year, there were an estimated 79.8 million millennials (ages 18 to 35) compared with 74.1 million baby boomers (ages 52 to 70), according to the Pew Research Center. The millennial population is expected to continue growing until 2036 as a result of immigration. They are the first generation of digital natives, those who came of age since the advent of the Internet.

Bob Hudson retires as Henry Mayo CFO After serving as chief financial officer of Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital since 2001, Charlie Robert (Bob) Hudson retired at the end of June. Hudson’s career in healthcare financial management included consulting stints up and down California, with KPMG and Ernst and Whinney, and management positions with medical groups and hospitals. At Henry Mayo, Hudson was CEO Roger Seaver’s first hire 16 years ago. When they started, the hospital was in dire financial straits. They led the hospital through bankruptcy to a period of sustained growth, as evidenced by a new patient care tower under construction out Hudson’s window during this conversation with us.
Castagna named MannKind’s CEO MannKind Corp.’s board of directors appointed Michael Castagna as chief executive office and to the board. The Valencia-based biomedical company markets Afrezza, an inhalable form of insulin. Castagna replaced Matthew Pfeffer, effective May 25. Pfeffer served as CEO and chief financial officer since January 2016 and as CFO from 2008 to 2016. Pfeffer continued with the company in an advisory capacity until the end of July. “The Board is extremely grateful to Matt for his committed service to the company over the past nine years,” board chair Kent Kresa said in a statement. He added that Pfeffer “successfully set the foundation for the company during its transition into a commercial entity and effectively prepared Michael to be his successor.”

SCV location filming again tops $30M Santa Clarita had a robust year of location filming for the fiscal year that ended June 30. The city’s Film Office recording 545 film permits and 1,265 location film days, which generated an estimated economic impact of $30.1 million to the local community. Across Greater Los Angeles, on-location film production slipped 4.7 percent between April and June, 2017 to 9,466 shoot days, according to an update from FilmL.A., the film office for the City of Los Angeles and other municipalities. Local on-location feature production decreased 18.5 percent (1,067 shoot days) in the second quarter. “De-
clines in any category need to be put in context: the year-to-date comparison for the last seven years shows 2017 is second only to 2016 for total shoot days,” said FilmL.A. president Paul Audley, who noted that 2016 was the best year on record for on-location production.

Constellation has a base of operations in Minneapolis, so the acquisition is expected to help Med Tech expand its presence in the Midwest and increase the number of health IT experts who specialize in NextGen and other clinical systems.

They talked about how their companies got started, the dynamics of a family-owned company, and issues related to succession, among other topics.
Movie ranches rebound from Sand Fire Before it had a name, the fire started small, burning a mere quarter acre of brush on the south side of Highway 14 near Sand Canyon Road in Santa Clarita on the afternoon of Friday, July 22, 2016. Most such small flare ups are quickly extinguished. Not this one. By Noon Saturday, the Sand Fire had consumed 11,000 acres (half its ultimate size), and was heading toward Sable Ranch and Rancho Deluxe, two of the 11 movie ranches that have provided backdrops for hundreds of movies and TV shows. When the fire arrived, “it was a firestorm, like a raging train,” said Derek Hunt, owner of Sable Ranch, which dates to the 1930s as a working ranch, and has been a movie ranch since the 1960s. “You could hear it coming, rumbling and grumbling. It was pretty brutal.” One year later, both movie ranches are back in business.

tax credits, which allocates nearly $68 million to independent and studio projects. A total of 92 projects sought tax breaks from California’s Film and Television Tax Credit Program during the first film allocation period, from June 27 to July 8. This is the program’s third fiscal year. The three films bring to six the number big-budget productions that have received credits. “Captain Marvel” and the other big-budget studio projects have production budgets over $75 million, which would have made them ineligible for the state’s first-generation tax credit program. “Such films are a primary target for the tax credit program because they can bring significant jobs and spending to regions across the state,” said California Film Commission Executive Director Amy Lemisch in a statement.
Google Startup Grind coming to town Santa Clarita is the newest outpost of Google Startup Grind, which holds monthly gatherings to give budding entrepreneurs a chance to hear the story of a successful startup from its founder while sharing ideas and experiences with each other. The first event on Sept. 12 will feature Matthew Arevalo, founder of Loot Crate, a subscription box service launched five years ago at ComicCon. Loot Crate’s 675,000 subscribers receive a box of geek and gaming-related merchandise each month. In 2016, Loot Crate raised $18.5 million in Series A funding, led by UpFront Ventures, with participation from Breakwater Invest-
ment Management, Time Inc., Downey Ventures, M13 and Sterling VC. “People don’t realize the depth of entrepreneurial talent we have in the Santa Clarita Valley,” said James McKinney, vice president of strategic growth at Status Not Quo, a Santa Clarita-based marketing firm, which is hosting the Startup Grind events.
Business spotlight: Bocchi Laboratories Growth is the order of the day at Bocchi Laboratories, a Santa Clarita-based contract manufacturer of personal care products. The company is adding 45,000 square feet of warehouse and support space at its main facility on Reuther Road, and another 75,000 square feet to its second location in New Albany, Ohio, near Columbus. “In California, we can add about 25 percent more volume without significant investment,” said Joe Pender, who is marking five years as Bocchi’s CEO. “We can add 300 percent in Ohio.”
Med Tech Solutions expands Med Tech Solutions, a Valenciabased health care cloud computing company, has acquired the health information technology business unit of Constellation Inc. “We knew them from the industry,” said James Deck, CEO of MTS. “Constellation, which is an insurance company, was looking to divest their IT operations. The two companies have a similar culture, vision, strategy and values.” He said
Image 2000, a document services company in business for 25 years and based in Santa Clarita for a year, is thriving amid the evolution from paper to pixels. Based in the Valencia Industrial Center, the company has 140 employees, including close to 60 at its headquarters on Huntington Lane near Avenue Stanford. The company also has offices in Fresno, Bakersfield, Orange County, Lakewood, the Inland Empire, and Las Vegas. “We started out servicing copiers and printers, and as the technology has evolved, we’ve become more involved in cloud-based computing and digital technology,” said founder and CEO Joe Blatchford.
From Nothing to Something: Traveling Times The Santa Clarita Valley has many intelligent, articulate and experienced business owners who, having enjoyed success, are ready to focus on turning their businesses over to the next generation to lead. This handover provides these tenured leaders an opportunity to mentor others in their industry and in their community. Mirko Ilich fits into this category as a mentor, Ken Kellar interviewed him as part of his series From Nothing to Something; stories of how businesses in the SCV were founded and built. In 1973, Ilich founded Traveling Times, Inc., which serves the promotional needs of the travel and tourism industries worldwide with custom publishing, graphic design, and online marketing.

Steamwork coworking space open Santa Clarita has a new coworking space, Steamwork Center, on Constellation Drive. After looking at spaces all over the Santa Clarita Valley, founder Tania Mulry signed a three-year lease in July and opened the 4,000-square-foot space. That includes a 1,800-squarefoot double height space that will be converted to two floors of additional offices by next spring. “Technology has made working remotely easy, but remote working brings with it isolation,” Mulry said. “There can come a sense of complacency when you’re not meeting people and you have an over-reliance on technology to connect with other people. It’s not good for the soul or the heart, and people can become depressed.” Coworking spaces tend to attract work-at-home professionals, independent contractors, and people who travel frequently who end up working in relative isolation.
Profile: Lady Di’s Cookies Santa Clarita entrepreneur Diane Knight started Lady Di’s Cookies in 1994, and now has 28 employees at two locations, on The Old Road across from Westridge Village and on the lower level of Westfield Valencia Town Center. “Many of my original cookie recipes came to me through dreams when I was twelve years old,” she said in an interview. “I was able to create the recipes from visions and smells as I awoke. My company motto is “Love Never Fails” as I believe they were divinely inspired. At an early age, I knew I was destined to open a cookie store. Following the success of Mrs. Fields, I founded Lady Di’s in 1994 as a gift packaging company. I opened my first retail store in 2003 and my second retail store in 2014.” Brock - Business Journals.indd 1

Seco Canyon Village sells for $15.5M Seco Canyon Village, a 42,000-squarefoot retail center at the corner of Seco Canyon Road and Copperhill Drive in Santa Clarita, has been sold for $15.5 million. The center, built in 2005, is anchored by a CVS pharmacy, and includes an AIM Mail Center, Papa John’s Pizza, Verizon Wireless and Supercuts. The buyer was a private 1031 exchange buyer, a family trust, and the seller was a private investor. Both are based in Beverly Hills and both were represented by Ed Hanley, president, and Kevin Fryman, executive vice president of Hanley Investment Group Real Estate Advisors. “After generating multiple offers, we were able to close escrow with an exchange buyer at list price,” Hanley said in a statement. “The buyer assumed a low-leverage life insurance loan, which met their exchange objectives.” The 4.55-acre shopping center was 96 percent occupied at the time of the sale.

Guide to Planning in 2018 By Tamara Gurney, President & CEO Mission Valley Bank As the end of the calendar year quickly approaches, a common New Year’s resolution is to take control of your finances. This year, resolve to plan ahead. First things first. If you are not already doing business with an independent, community business bank, consider making the switch. This gives you the ability to take advantage of the services of a Trusted Advisor who can assist and advise every step of the way, any day, all year long. To stay on track with your resolution, here are a few simple steps I have learned from my own Trusted Advisors. Take a few simple steps each month to allow you to achieve your goals at year’s end. The best way to start is by dividing your financial planning into quarters, which helps to easily streamline your financial future.

First Quarter: January- February- March The first step to planning ahead is looking back. Major changes in your personal life in the past year can affect this year’s finances. If you got married, divorced, had a child or grandchild, review and revise financial and legal considerations that may arise. Estate planning can be difficult, but is crucial to financial peace of mind. Since estate tax rules and plans can change every year, take the opportunity to update outdated documents. Review major changes in your professional life, as well. If you started a new business, changed jobs, or retired, adapt and adjust your budget accordingly. Second Quarter: April-May-June Reevaluate retirement plans and ask yourself how much you have now and how much you need in the future. Consult your Trusted Advisor to ensure saving and investment strategies answer those questions and align with personal goals, particularly if you have had a change in your life or circumstances. Adequate insurance coverage provides financial reassurance. Review and update all policies: homeowners, auto, investment, property, disability and casualty. An important but often overlooked aspect of personal financial planning is online banking accessibility. Compile a comprehensive list of accounts, usernames and passwords for your reference. As with all sensitive information, store the list in an extremely secure location. Third Quarter: July-August-September Conduct a mid-year review of income and expenditures. Review January to June, and adjust accordingly for August through December. Check your credit report and report any discrepancies to appropriate agencies. A mid-year evaluation can also reveal if anyone else is using your identity and trying to obtain credit. Request a Personal Earnings and Benefit Estimate Statement from the Social Security Administration that summarizes your social security earnings history and provides an estimate of the benefits to which you are entitled. It is important to verify that you have been credited for all of your earnings. Fourth Quarter: October- November-December Get a jump on your taxes in October. Estimate taxes and take the appropriate steps to minimize them before years’ end. Consider making gifts and charitable donations in the fourth quarter to ensure timely deductions. In November, start year-end planning and resolve major issues before December 31st. Finally, review your progress for the year. Recalculate net worth and compare against the beginning of the year to see how well you did throughout the year. While some of these ideas may not apply to your particular situation, professional guidance is always advisable to determine whether, how and when to implement any financial strategies. Mission Valley Bank is a locally-owned, full service community business bank headquartered in Sun Valley, California with a branch office/business banking center in Santa Clarita. Tamara Gurney is President and CEO of Mission Valley Bank, and was named “Most Trusted Advisor -- Business Banking” and “Trailblazer” by the San Fernando Valley Business Journal. She is also past president of the California Independent Bankers and can be reached at (818) 394-2300. For more information visit www.MissionValleyBank.com.

SCV BUSINESS VOICES
Live & Work in the Santa Clarita Valley By Holly Schroeder President & CEO, SCVEDC The Santa Clarita Valley (SCV) is home to many top employers in a wide variety of industries like medical devices and biotechnology, aerospace and defense, digital media and entertainment, tech, and advanced manufacturing. Despite the fact that SCV residents are typically highly skilled and highly educated, local employers often note that they have trouble hiring talent that lives locally, and they frequently have to cast a wide net to fill open positions. To help address this issue, the Santa Clarita Valley Economic Development Corporation (SCVEDC) has created a new website as a resource for residents who want to work closer to home. LiveWorkSCV.com links to the career pages of the Santa Clarita Valley’s top
50 employers and their current openings. Whether you are an entry level employee just starting out, or a corporate manager with decades of experience under your belt, SCV companies have offerings across the board. Studies show a strong link between your commute time and your overall happiness. Employers understand that a big part of job satisfaction is a good work-life balance. Working closer to home has many benefits including: Better Quality of Life Who doesn’t want more time to spend doing things you enjoy? Shorter commute times increase personal time, allowing more time for family and friends, hobbies, and relaxation. Better Health Everyone knows that long commutes are stressful and time consum-
ing, but did you know that studies show commuting more than 10 minutes to work is associated with having higher blood sugar and cholesterol levels? Commuting in traffic also causes high blood pressure and anxiety, and leads to less time for exercise and sleep. Lower Costs Gas prices keep going up and there is no end in sight. Reducing your commute also reduces wear and tear on your vehicle and eliminates costly parking expenses and will ultimately improve your bottom line. Environmental Benefits Working closer to home reduces your transportation needs, and whether you take your car or public transportation, shortening your commuting means fewer greenhouse gasses that
are released into the environment. The Santa Clarita Valley provides the perfect live/work/play environment, and there are many companies looking for local, skilled talent – you! If you are ready to quit your commute, check out www.LiveWorkSCV.com and see what open positions you qualify for. Each company’s name is linked to their careers page – be sure to bookmark the page and check back often for updates. The Santa Clarita Valley Economic Development Corporation (SCVEDC) is a unique private / public partnership representing the united effort of regional industry and government leaders. The SCVEDC utilizes an integrated approach to attracting, retaining, and expanding a diversity of businesses in the Santa Clarita Valley, especially those in key industry clusters, by offering competitive business services and other resources.

Businesses Can Be Liable For Bad Acts of Hired Security Guards By: John H. Shaffery Poole & Shaffery, LLP A man was recently awarded $5 million by a jury stemming from an altercation between himself and a security guard working at a bar in Los Angeles. Twenty-eight year old Shawn Dearing filed a lawsuit in Los Angeles County Superior Court seeking recovery of personal injury damages, including a traumatic brain injury, against the bar (Cabo Cantina) who retained the services of the guard, the bar’s management company, RMG Sunset, Inc. (“RMG”), and the guard’s direct employer, Global Protection Group, Inc. (“GPG”). Plaintiff, who was reportedly heavily intoxicated at the time, was leaning up against a rail that separated the bar’s property from the sidewalk as he waited for his friends outside of the bar around 2 a.m. A security guard retained by the
bar approached Plaintiff and asked him to stop leaning up against the railing. The two parties exchanged words which eventually resulted in the security guard leaving his post and walking off the bar property with Dearing following behind. A supervisor for the security guard appeared and failed to de-escalate the situation. Surveillance footage from a building next door purportedly showed the guard putting something into his right fist before the altercation became physical. The footage then showed that Plaintiff made first physical contact by slapping the guard’s hand. This provoked the guard to strike Plaintiff in the left temporal region of his head. Plaintiff sustained a left temporal fracture from the strike and an occipital skull fracture from the back of his head hitting the sidewalk as he fell to the ground. He was hospitalized for three days following the incident, and was diagnosed with a moderate trau-
matic brain injury. The diagnosis was not in dispute at trial; however, the parties disagreed with respect to projected future treatment and associated life care plans. GPG tendered the case to its insurance carrier, which declined to defend the security guard’s employer, resulting in GPG falling into default. The case therefore proceeded to trial against the bar owner - Cabo Cantina, and the bar’s management company - RMG (collectively “Defendants”). At trial, Defendants’ contested liability by contending that Plaintiff initiated the physical altercation by slapping the guard’s hand, and that thereafter; the guard had a right to defend himself. Conversely, Plaintiff argued that the guard and his supervisor were negligent as they broke several of Cabo Cantina’s “Use of Force” policies by engaging Plaintiff after he was off the bar property, failing to de-escalate the situa-
tion, and using excessive force. From a legal standpoint, businesses that retain security guard companies for use of security (such as Cabo Cantina) may be found liable if they were negligent in the supervision or if they hired guard acted with excessive force. After an eleven-day trial, the jury found for Plaintiff and awarded a gross award of $9,254,397.21. The award was reduced to $5,367,550.38 because the jury also found that Plaintiff was 42% at fault for the incident. Poole & Shaffery, LLP is a full service Business Transaction and Litigation law firm with 20 attorneys representing businesses, management and individual business owners in a variety of legal settings and needs. New Technology for a New Generation of Drivers By Cheri Fleming Valencia Acura True story: About a year ago we were chatting with a 21-year-old and asked what she thought was the most important factor when purchasing a car. Her answer was swift and sounded like "ox cord." Well, it wasn't that; it was an "aux cord" short for an auxiliary cord to plug in devices. A few years ago, young consumers may have been more inclined to answer with features such as safety, gas mileage, reliability, and affordability. But today is different. There is no denying that for all of us – young and old – our smartphones have grown into a virtual extension of ourselves. We use our hands so often to access features that it has become second nature and integral to how we move through the day. With that in mind, Acura has integrated Apple CarPlay™ and Android
Auto™ into its vehicles starting with the 2017 NSX, and now the 2018 TLX and MDX models. These technologies take key features from your phone's home screen and display them on the upper On Demand Multi-Use Display (ODMD). They even let you use the phone's native voice command system: Siri® for the iPhone or Google Voice™ for Android devices. Simple set up makes Apple CarPlay™ and Android Auto™ easy to use. Just plug the phone into the USB port and follow the on-screen instructions for the vehicle and phone. No codes to enter and no new procedures to master or memorize. The Apple system displays the same icons you see on your phone, and the streamlined Android system organizes information in familiar-looking cards. Accessing the phone's functionality is as easy as pressing and holding the Voice Command button on the steering wheel for two seconds and giving verbal in-
structions to Siri or Google Voice. In the digital age, familiarity and ease of use are real luxuries. Whether using the phone, music, maps/navigation, or any of the growing number of third-party apps, the upper screen on the vehicle's dash will respond and operate just like when using your phone. Apple CarPlay is compatible with iPhone 5 or newer, running iOS 7 or newer giving you access to phone, voicemail, music, Apple Maps, messaging (incoming and outgoing), podcasts, audiobooks and a Now Playing function. Android Auto is compatible with phones running 5.0 (Lollipop) or higher, and requires download of the Android Auto app. Once connected, the user has access to phone, voicemail, music files, Google Maps™, weather, incoming and outgoing text messages and email functions. Acura continues to work with developers to add new third-party apps. And, of course, both technologies are sub-
ject to the Apple CarPlay and Android Auto terms of use agreement. Visit Valencia Acura's showroom floor and let our sales team demonstrate how easy and intuitive these new technologies are to operate. No wonder there are so many Acuras on the road in the Santa Clarita Valley with connectivity like this combined with Acura's precision crafted performance DNA. Celebrating 20 years serving the community, Valencia Acura is a local, family-owned and operated car dealership located at 23955 Creekside Road in Valencia. Valencia Acura has been recognized as a prestigious Acura Precision Team Dealership for 11 years, awarded Acura’s Council of Excellence for 13 years, and voted Santa Clarita’s Best New Car Dealership for 15 years by the Signal newspaper. Owners Don and Cheri Fleming can be reached at (661) 255-3000. Visit www.ValenciaAcura.com.

VIA In Focus: 2018 VIA Chairwoman Diana Meyer The Valley Industry Association announced Logix Federal Credit Union’s Vice President of Payments Diana Meyer will take the helm as chairwoman of the business organization for 2018. She was appointed as VIA’s Vice Chair of Education earlier in the year. VIA’s 2016 and 2017 Chairman Ed Masterson, with SOS Entertainment, will turn over the reins of the chair position in December. “I am a strong believer in VIA and the many wonderful things the organization brings to the business community,” Meyer stated. “The Santa Clarita Valley’s distinguished business-to-business organization fosters programs and networking opportunities that bring like-minded individuals together to make the business community stronger.” Meyer is no stranger to VIA having served as the 2012 Chairwoman of the Board. She has been active in VIA since 2001 starting on the Membership Committee before moving to the VIA STAR committee. Meyer will be sworn into office on Tuesday, Dec. 19, 2017 at the Valencia Country Club in coordination with VIA’s board of directors’ installation luncheon. CyberSecurity Looms Large for SCV Aerospace & Defense Companies Santa Clarita is home to more than 90 companies serving the Aerospace & Defense industry – either as Tier 1 suppliers to Department of Defense (DoD) prime contractors such as Lockheed Martin, Boeing, or Northrop Grumman, or as Tier 2 or Tier 3 subcontractors. Regardless of where these businesses exist in the supply chain, they have one thing in common – come December 31, 2017, all are required to comply with strict cybersecurity standards to ensure that certain types of federal information are protected when processed, stored, and used in non-federal information systems. In other words, protecting information coming out of the DoD and passing down the supply chain. To help SCV A & D suppliers address these new standards, the Santa Clarita Valley Economic Development Corporation (SCVEDC) and California Manufacturing Technology Consulting (CMTC) held a DoD funded, regional 8-hour compliance workshop. Attendees learned about compliance requirements, defense contractor expectations, and how to begin the potentially daunting task of cybersecurity assessment and remediation. Aerospace & Defense suppliers are a key target of global adversaries, which spare no expense or effort in attempts to breach security and access data used for building U.S. defense products. The DoD must assure that any Covered Defense Information (CDI) remains secure. What is not well understood is that CDI is much broader than just “classified” information, and cybersecurity requirements are expected to be adhered to by all sub-tier suppliers. Hosting seminars and boot camps is just one of the many ways SCVEDC works to support local companies in the Aerospace & Defense industry. Consider us your one-stop resource for helping your company grow! For more information about the Aerospace & Defense Coalition or any other business assistance visit our website www.scvedc.org or call 661.288.4400.
