Advanced Audiology’s Motto: ‘Give People More Than They Expect’ BY ALICIA DOYLE

A

dvanced Audiology was established by Nola Aronson in September of 2010, but long before then, she successfully grew two other practices in Santa Clarita and has helped hearing impaired patients since 1987. Today, Advanced Audiology is the largest diagnostic hearing center in Santa Clarita and leader of advanced technology and invisible hearing solutions. They also offer the latest state-of-the-art assistive listening devices. “What we do is help people hear better,” said Aronson, whose motto at Advanced Audiology is: Give People More Than They Expect. To that end, “we make sure that hearing is not affecting your social life, and you can continue to do the activities you’ve always done.” Advanced Audiology’s group of audiologists, who have more than six decades of combined experience, provides patients ages two and up with a unique solution to achieve the goal of improved quality of life through better hearing. “The way we’re different is our family-oriented approach where we have the most experienced audiologists,” Aronson said. “Mostly, all the medical community refers to us and they even bring their own families here.” The team at Advanced Audiology is also known as “the community audiologists” because they offer free hearing screenings to the community so residents can become educated about hearing, “and have a baseline, so they know what their hearing was compared to in the future,” Aronson said. In addition to testing people’s hearing, Advanced Audiology also fits new hearing devices that are now Bluetooth compatible, “where you can answer your phone, listen to music, count your steps, and even translate languages,” said Aronson, adding that this technology “is becoming one accessory for everything — it’s not just for hearing anymore.” At Advanced Audiology, a wide range of technology and a host of features are available in each hearing aid style. The cost of hearing aids generally depends on the technology and how clear you hear, especially in background noise. Today’s digital hearing aids are offered in various technology levels, such as basic, entry, advanced or premium level. They come in a variety of styles, from discrete to flashy, and all are feature-rich, providing unparalleled hearing quality, wearing comfort and automation that simplifies your

life while improving it every day. “We pride ourselves in helping you find a hearing solution with any budget. We offer 12-month 0 percent financing to help you,” Aronson said. Advanced Audiology also features an exclusive “Exact Match Hearing Process™,” which guarantees patients will be happy with results. Over the years, Advanced Audiology has developed a process of evaluating a hearing problem and selecting the correct hearing device for optimum results in sound clarity and comfort. Advanced Audiology is the only audiologist in Santa Clarita that offers the “Exact Match Hearing Process™, “ and backs it up with a 100% satisfaction guarantee. “The importance of hearing is everything, because hearing is communication to connect to people, and you can’t have a social life if you can’t hear,” Aronson said. “We also provide longterm solutions and individualized care plans to improve patients’ quality of life.” Aronson has won numerous awards over the years, including the Rising Star Award in 2016 from the Valley Industrial Association, the Best Business of the Year in 2015 from the Chamber of Commerce and the 2016 Ultimate Female Small Business Executive award from Elite Magazine. She serves on the board of directors for several local organizations, including vice president of the Circle of Hope, a nonprofit that provides financial assistance to uninsured and underinsured people with colon, reproductive and melanoma cancers, as well as supportive programs to those fighting all cancers. She also serves on the board of the Valley Industrial Association of Santa Clarita, which represents

business interests throughout the Santa Clarita Valley. Aronson is also known for her philanthropy. For instance, “we believe in giving back 10 percent of hearing aid proceeds to different nonprofits in the Santa Clarita Valley,” Advanced Audiology has been the title sponsor for many events put on by local nonprofits, including the Boys & Girls Club and Alzheimer’s Association. In other charitable endeavors, she’s a member of Soroptimist International of Greater Santa Clarita Valley, a woman’s organization focused on improving the lives of women and girls in local communities and throughout the world; and also serves on The Chancellor’s Circle, which is the College of the Canyons Foundation’s most prestigious leadership support group. In April of 2019, she sponsored a room at the new 30,000-square-foot SCV Senior Center, which was named in her honor; and she was one of the Cover Stars for the center’s celebrity waiter’s dinner in February of 2019, in which funds raised were used to help support the center, as well as build its new facility. In other local efforts, Advanced Audiology served as the title sponsor for the 2018 VIA Bash, in which proceeds benefited the VIA Education Foundation’s Connecting to Success program, a privately funded half-day conference offering workplace readiness skills to high school students. More than 2,500 high school juniors from all area high schools in the Hart District participate in the program each year. Advanced Audiology was also the title sponsor in October 2018 at the Annual Afternoon Tea fundraising and awareness event at the Circle of Hope, in which proceeds support-

ed the non-profit’s mission of providing emotional, financial

and

education-

al support to those diagnosed with cancer in the Santa Clarita Valley. Also in 2018, Advanced Audiology was received the 21st Senate District Small Business of the Month award by Senator Scott Wilk. “The main thing I would like to get across is that I am a philanthropist, and that when you buy a hearing aid from us, you’re not just buying something, you’re actually getting a solution to your hearing problem,” Aronson emphasized. “And because we give back to the community, our patients also get to give back – so they not only hear better, they get to give back to their community.” Advanced

Audiology

serves the entire Santa Clarita Valley, and also has satellite offices in Million Hills and Northridge. As far as the future is concerned, “we’re adding a larger team because

we’re

continually

growing, so we’ll be adding more people within the next couple of months,” Aronson said. “We’re here to stay.” Advanced Audiology is located at 23822 Valencia Blvd., #103, Santa Clarita. For more information, call (661) 403-1891, or visit https://scvadvancedaudiology.com/.  

American Family Funding offers Mortgage Lending Expertise BY ALICIA DOYLE

A

merican Family Funding, established in 1993, is a full-service mortgage firm with an experienced staff, offering knowledge in every area of mortgage lending, from purchasing and refinancing to veteran loans and reverse mortgages. Their team of mortgage professionals has access to a full range of resources, and all of their mortgage consultants are dedicated to finding the right loan with the best rates, terms and costs to meet their clients’ unique financial needs. “Our philosophy is to provide peace of mind when it comes to purchasing or refinancing a home,” said David Cantrell, sales manager and mortgage consultant, who has been in the financial industry for 25 years. “We work one-on-one with our clients so they can completely understand how the mortgage and home: buying process works, and how investing in real estate can not only provide a safe home to live in for their family, but it is an investment to help them reach their long- and shortterm financial goals. “That peace of mind is provided through educating clients about a variety of important factors, including understanding how their credit, income and down payment combinations are evaluated to be sure that they not only qualify, but they are able to close their purchase on time. In addition, we review the total cost of their loan over a lifetime, and their financial strategies so they can leverage real estate to build their wealth,” stated Fred Arnold, branch manager and mortgage professional for the past three decades in Santa Clarita. American Family Funding offers something unique that most mortgage companies do not offer: relationships with credit unions and small finan-

PHOTOS BY DAN WATSON / THE SIGNAL cial institutions in the community “These relationships allow us to help borrowers who can’t get traditional loans elsewhere, qualify, because these lenders have more flexibility when approving our clients,” said Cantrell. American Family Funding provides many of the same services that online lenders offer, such as the ability to apply for a loan 24/7 through the website and mobile application, in addition to the one-onone service a more personable financial institution offers. “We never want to substitute service when it comes to the home-buying process and we want to make sure we offer many of the convenient online tools consumers have come to expect,” said Arnold. Over the years, American Family Funding has received great admiration from past, present and repeat clients. One customer praised Steve Schaffer, American Family Funding’s reverse mortgage specialist, for her loan experi-

ence through the process for her mother, saying the “process went smoothly, I was well-informed all the way, and Steve made my journey quite easy.” Another satisfied customer said she was “extremely pleased with the professional and friendly service” she received from Patti Handy, noting that “our transaction was not an easy one and required a lot of documentation,” and in the end, “we couldn’t have asked for a better experience from American Family Funding.” In other testimonials, a customer praised David Cantrell, stating “he did what no other person or mortgage lender was willing to do by taking on a refinance that was less than 100k. He went above and beyond my expectations. He miraculously was able to negotiate on my behalf with the lender. The end result was a surprising success, and I couldn’t be happier.” Another client noticed how the whole team operates while

working with Fred, stating that “his team at American Family Funding made refinancing a painless experience. They were so efficient and friendly and there were no last-minute panics that I’ve experienced in the past. This is what a business should be run like.” Working and acting as a family is what we pride ourselves on, that’s why it’s in our name. “Right now, one of the biggest challenges that our society faces when it comes to housing is affordability,” explained Fernando Gauna, mortgage consultant in California and Colorado for American Family Funding. “Our number one focus over the next 12 months is to educate those that have been locked out of the home buying process and how they can afford and invest in the American dream.” Jilyn Crawford, mortgage advisor in the Palm Springs branch, emphasized that when it comes to housing, the most underserved population in Southern California is our nation’s military Veterans. “Our goal is to educate both the real estate and Veteran communities on the need and ease of getting a VA loan,” she said. “When it comes to homeownership, our Veterans need to be thought of first.” “We want to do everything we can to help our clients achieve the American dream of homeownership,” Jake Young, mortgage consultant, said, and in addition, “help the average working-class family invest in real estate to achieve their long-term financial goals so they can accomplish their family goals.”

T

odd Zwolensky recently retired from the U.S. Army after 23 years, and as he was going through the final out processing from the military service, his brother, Matt Zwolensky, asked if he would be interested in going into the glass business with him. Several months earlier, Matt had been asked if he knew anyone who would be interested in purchasing the business. “Matt asked several people and no one jumped at the chance,” Todd recalled. “Running a small business is quite a lot of work and there aren’t a lot of people that have the knowledge and experience in the glass industry that aren’t already in business or retired. We felt we could keep the old-fashioned customer service and quality that SCV has been known for, but update the showroom and product lines for an improved customer experience. This is kind of a labor of love for us. SCV Glassworks has been in business for 17 years and really has a place in the community. We wanted it to remain for many years.” Today, SCV Glassworks is run by Todd Zwolensky; his wife, Marthann Schulte; Matt Zwolensky; and Ann Juttner, one of previous owners. The business is now located in the newly renovated Diamond Place Complex, centrally located at 26330 Diamond Place in Santa Clarita. “We are a service-connected, disabled-Veteran … owned small business,” Todd said. “We

Todd Zwolensky in SCV Glassworks’ new location. PHOTO BY DAN WATSON / THE SIGNAL are driven by the philosophy of teamwork.” SCV Glassworks is a state licensed glazing contractor offering quality products, including replacement windows, entry doors, French and sliding patio doors, framed and frameless shower enclosures, wardrobe doors, table tops, glass, mirrors and all commercial applications. All installations are performed by SCV Glassworks AMMA-certified glaziers. “We also warranty our labor,” Todd said. “We automated our processes so that we can write up an estimate and take payment at a customer’s location. This cuts down the time customers have to be home. We also have GPS tracking so if traffic is an issue, we can call ahead and let the customer know we are going to be late or sometimes early, and they can decide what they want to do.” SCV Glassworks strives to exceed customers’ expectations by providing exceptional customer service and a superior ex-

perience. And, anyone has the ability to call “a stop to work” if they see something unsafe. “Glazing is dangerous, and we want ourselves and our employees to go home at the end of the day,” he said. “This isn’t just a saying, it’s our creed.” SCV Glassworks serves Santa Clarita, Valencia, Saugus, Castaic, Canyon Country, Newhall, Stevenson Ranch and Acton, as well as the San Fernando and Antelope valleys. “We purchased the company March 26 and moved to the new location April 19,” said Todd, adding “we would like to apologize to our customers for the delays in getting back to them during the move.” The move was “a time-intensive process, but it will allow us to have a much larger showroom. The process of getting fully licensed, bonded and making sure we meet our business responsibilities to the state and federal governments was more difficult than we expected since we changed the ad-

dress of the store front. We are now fully open for business.” SCV Glassworks is also involved in the local community. “We are committed to the community and giving back as we can,” Todd said. SCV Glassworks has earned several awards and accolades, including The Signal’s “Best of” for 2017 and 2018. “We hope we can honor them by keeping up the winning streak or at least placing respectably,” Todd said. Over the years, the community has been great, he noted, with customers putting their trust in us despite the ownership change, and continuing to refer their friends and neighbors. “It helps that Ann, Brandon and all the employees stayed with us so people know they are getting the same great service as before.” The next step for the business is to install a store-front sign approved by the building owners and finish the showroom with the finest selection of all the products they offer. Above all, “we strive to make SCV Glassworks a model glass shop while staying profitable as the previous leadership team did for the last 17 years,” Todd added. “It is a legacy we want to continue … a challenge, but we are up to it.” SCV Glassworks is located in the Diamond Place Complex, at 26330 Diamond Place Suite 140 Santa Clarita. Wicall’s Carpet and Flooring: ‘Make Customers Happy’ A BY ALICIA DOYLE

s the premier floor-covering showplace in Santa Clarita, Wicall’s Carpets and Flooring is known as the one-stop showroom for all floor-covering needs. In business since 1968, this family-owned and operated endeavor offers a wide variety of carpet, hard wood, vinyl planking and tile in a friendly, comfortable and helpful atmosphere. “The most important thing for me is to make customers happy,” said owner Lisa Wicall, adding that her father started the business and she’s lived in this town her entire life. “We’re not the cheapest, we’re not the most expensive, but my customers are the most important. I enjoy it and that’s why I do it.” At Wicall’s Carpets, the staff knows that selecting the right flooring for your home can sometimes be overwhelming, and as such, they pride themselves on helping customers choose the right items for their home in the simplest way. The showrooms are staffed with flooring experts, who go through continuous training to understand consumer needs so they can recommend the best possible floor choice based on needs, lifestyle and budget. The many offerings at Wicall’s Carpets include the larg-

est selection of floor covering in the Santa Clarita area design professionals on premise, complimentary in-home design consultation, free in-home measuring and estimates, and professional installation. They serve the entire Santa Clarita Valley, as well as other surrounding areas, including Acton, Agua Dulce and cities within Ventura County. “Our expert staff guides you every step of the way and our professional installation team will pamper your home from start to finish,” Wicall said. “We have great installers that have been with me for many years. You can find flooring anyplace else, but the best thing we have is customer service — that’s what we pride ourselves on. We’re going to take care of you.” Customer testimonials praise the staff for how nice they are as well as how knowledgeable they are about their products and inventory, with one happy customer stating, “They really did a great job with the installation as the carpet looks like it’s from a showroom. We love the look of the new carpet and we are very happy with the decision to choose Wicall’s.” Another satisfied customer stated that “it was great to find a local business that has been here as long as Wicall’s, but more importantly having been proved over and over again of their integri-

We will never buy flooring from anywhere else.” Another customer who needed a bedroom floor replaced went to Wicall’s, who she had never dealt with before, and asked if it would be possible to have the flooring done, as well as receive help moving the heavy furniture that stood upon the existing old carpet. “Rich came out with Oscar to help move those heavy oak pieces,” she stated. “Then Rich did the whole floor by himself, taking great care to scrape fifty years of old glue and pad-

Shannon Tulloss Investigations A Full-Service Agency

BY ALICIA DOYLE

S

hannon Tulloss Investigations, a full-service detective agency serving the private and legal communities nationwide, helps clients find the facts they need, identify risks and provide them with peace of mind. “We are fueled by partnering with our clients to help navigate life’s complications,” said Tulloss, who is a California-licensed private investigator and a New Jerseylicensed private detective. The agency is known for creatively thinking outside the box to help solve clients’ problems by providing them with legally and ethically sourced information. “Our mission is to help our clients see the bigger picture by identifying potential risks, and uncovering the facts that they need to resolve their concern with their best interest in mind,” Tulloss said. As a full-service detective agency, Shannon Tulloss Investigations performs strategic background checks, social media research, deep web searches, pre-trial litigation support, and criminal and financial research, as well as conducts elder-abuse investigations and the identification and location of lost heirs or biological family members. “First, we consult with those who reach out to our office to really listen to what is said so we can get to the heart of the matter,” Tulloss explained. “Then, we craft an investigative path specifically designed to be of most use and within their budget. Our business is very rewarding since we help find the answers our clients need to make informed decisions.” When it comes to consultation services, the agency excels at gathering facts relevant to the issues at hand, locating witnesses or people, vetting potential partners in life and business, and identifying information to gain leverage in negotiations. Regarding corporate investigations, they begin with a strategic investigative plan that will provide the insight clients need as expeditiously and cost-effectively as possible to help them find the answers that will provide the backbone of their corporate defense. The agency also specializes in sweepstakes finalist and talent vetting for the promotions and entertainment industry. “Our clients know what they are getting into in advance, limiting brand exposure,” Tulloss explained. “We will tell you everything about them, before TMZ does.” The agency also specializes in genealogy and adoption reunions. Having been through this process herself, Tulloss is uniquely qualified to help clients as they navigate through this life-changing process. Tulloss has won several social media awards, and is a multiaward winner in the “Best PI” category by the readers of The Signal newspaper.

PHOTO BY DAN WATSON / THE SIGNAL Tulloss has served as district governor for the California Association of Licensed Investigators, and is a member of many professional associations and communities worldwide. A married mother of two, she also is a native resident of the Santa Clarita Valley, attending preschool on Lyons Avenue, graduating from Hart High School and College of the Canyons, and earning her Bachelor’s Degree in psychology from The Master’s University. To that end, she said, she’s “as Santa Clarita as you get.” She continues her education annually by attending training all over the U.S. led by the best instructors in her industry. The business philosophies that have propelled her success include her focus to be of service, as well as to have fun, exceed expectations and help clients in ways they hadn’t considered. “I have been featured in many articles and curriculum nationwide because it seems that I am never at a loss for sharing my opinion relating to many investigative topics,” Tulloss said. Shannon Tulloss Investigations opened in Santa Clarita in 1997 after Tulloss left her job as a claims adjuster with a major insurer, “because my definition of integrity differed so significantly from theirs, I felt that we were not a professional match.” With that, she left and earned her private investigator’s license, then opened her own agency, working while her sons were in school, in between drop-off and pick-up. In other endeavors, she is an avid volunteer in the community, from causes in the U.S. all the way to Haiti, where she helps the Three Angels Children’s Relief organization serve orphans and at-risk families. Above all, “I love to be helpful and am fueled by providing those who find themselves in need of a kind, yet no-nonsense advocate, find the necessary resolution to life’s problems.” For more information about Shannon Tulloss Investigations, visit https://tullosspi.com/, call 818-478-7900 or email shannon@tullosspi.com.

nown as the home of the garden experts, Green Thumb Nursery in Santa Clarita is a secondgeneration, family-owned nursery and garden center that offers quality, experience and expertise unmatched by big box stores. “Our customers are priority, and giving the best customer service is our goal,” said Bryan Payne, general manager. Friendly customer service with a smile, combined with unique plants and California-certified nursery professionals, make Green Thumb Nursery particularly special. Customers choose Green Thumb for the customer service, the knowledgeable on-site garden experts and the quality of plants in exchange for an affordable cost. “Our best sellers include roses, fruit trees, citrus and flowers that go into your flower beds and hang from your patio cover,” Payne said. Green Thumb Nursery also offers house plants, sod, pottery, soil amendments and fertilizers (both traditional and organic), as well as lady bugs and other beneficial insects. There is a wide selection of up-scale patio furniture and they carry items for the home, including candles, pillows, doormats, wreaths, silk plants, lan-

Plus, there is an online monthly calendar with helpful tips appropriate to the month. Green Thumb partners with local garden clubs and supports “local public schools with assistance in garden programs, fundraisers, etc.,” Payne said, further emphasizing that “today’s students are tomorrow’s gardeners.” Green Thumb Nursery, which has been serving California

since 1946, opened its Green Thumb International Garden and Patio Center in Santa Clarita in December of 1970. “Green Thumb Garden Center is an extension of the original owners’ desire to offer a premier garden center to the residents of the San Fernando Valley,” Payne said. “That drive and entrepreneurial spirit has led to other locations throughout Southern California, including San Diego, Orange and Ventura counties.” Business philosophies that have propelled Green Thumb Nursery into success include providing superior plant material and products, expert advice, friendly customer service and value for the customer’s dollar, Payne said, adding that in the Santa Clarita Valley, “our customer base has been extremely loyal to Green Thumb over the last 50 years.” Green Thumb is “an exceptional place” to work and shop, he noted, “because of the relationships we develop with our customers and each other. Those relationships are the face-to-face, day-to-day experiences that happen over time and have sustained us for 50 years.” Since the beginning, Green Thumb Nursery has taken pride in its consistent effort to better the environment through moral business practices by al-

Ultimately, “we hope to impact the world by providing products and services that bring people back to nature and into the garden,” Payne added. “Gardening is therapeutic.” Green Thumb Nursery is located at 23734 Newhall Avenue in Santa Clarita. City of Santa Clarita has That ‘Home-Town’ Feel BY ALICIA DOYLE

L

ocated in a picturesque valley 30 miles northwest of Los Angeles, Santa Clarita is confident in its growing role as a first-choice community for raising families and building businesses. With its unique blend of rural, old-west heritage and urban sophistication, this progressive city has established an enviable balance between quality living and quality growth. That balance is carefully maintained through long-term planning and fiscal responsibility, community involvement, respect for the environment, and strong public and private support for business development. “What I hear most from residents is how we are such a family-oriented community — and even though our population is growing, we are able to maintain that home-town feel,” said Santa Clarita City Mayor Marsha McLean. “Since the inception of the city, preserving the green belt around the city has always been a priority — we now have over 11,000 acres of open space that will be preserved forever for future generations.” The City of Santa Clarita encompasses the communities of Canyon Country, Newhall, Saugus and Valencia. Since 2012, Santa Clarita has annexed several communities in the Saugus and Canyon Country areas, making it the third largest city in Los Angeles County with a population of approximately 222,000 people over a 70.87-square-mile area. “Santa Clarita is the safest community of its size in Los Angeles County and consistently ranks high on many polls and lists based on statistics from the Federal Bureau of Investigation,” said Carrie Lujan, the city’s communications manager, noting that the city is home to more than 7,000 businesses and nearly 88,000 jobs from diverse industries. The Santa Clarita Valley offers a variety of attractions from championship-style golf courses, theme parks, historical sites and a world-class aquatic center to luxurious day spas, outdoor recreation areas, more than 93 miles of paseos and trails, and nearly 12,000 acres of open space. Since incorporation, numerous new parks and sports facilities have been built by the city, and residents and visitors enjoy the city’s annual Cowboy Festival, River Rally, Earth Arbor

Additionally, “the city is proud of its three Metrolink stations and comprehensive transportation network which provides local, commuter and curb-to-curb Dial-A-Ride services for residents and visitors, as well as a recently launched Bike Share program,” according to Mayor McLean. Over the years, the city has won numerous awards and accolades, including two 2018 Helen Putnam Awards from the League of California Cities in the category of “Intergovernmental Collaboration” for the Community Court program and in the category of “Excellence in City-Business Relations” for the Business Incubator program. “Santa Clarita has received more Helen Putnam Awards than any other city in California, bringing our total to 17,” the Mayor said. In other honors, Santa Clarita was ranked as the most “Business Friendly” City in the county by the Los Angeles County Business Federation; received the American Public Works Association High Desert Branch Outstanding Project of the Year for the Old Town Newhall Parking Structure; ranked one of the Healthiest Cities in the State in the 2018 City and Community Health Profiles; and rated as a Top 10 City in the nation for the lowest amount of property crime based on FBI crime reports by Reviews.org.

Julie Liles, Dottie Gaunt, 1, and Adam Gaunt prepare for the start of the community bike ride held at Valencia Heritage Park in Valencia.

Some of the city’s most popular attractions and offerings include Old Town Newhall, which is known as Santa Clarita’s premiere arts and entertainment district. Boasting several options for live theatre and art — there is always a new show, comedian, musician or gallery to check out. The popular Thursdays@Newhall events bring live shows, dancing, comedy, music and more to the area every Thursday evening. New additions are also in the works in Old Town Newhall. Newhall Crossings and the Laemmle Newhall are currently under construction. Newhall Crossings is a mixed-use development that will feature retail, restaurant and housing space. When complete, the much anticipated Laemmle Theatre will offer seven screens and approximately 500 seats for patrons to enjoy art house movies. Old Town Newhall is also earning a reputation for being the hot spot for a night out. Many new restaurants are joining longtime favorites, offering comfort food with a modern twist, tempting appetizers, decadent desserts and exotic eats. If you are looking to experience craft beer or local wine, several tasting rooms offer unique sips. Other reasons why residents and visitors love Santa Clarita include its 34 beautiful and well-maintained parks, including the 130-acre Central Park; three libraries, with one more on the way in Saugus; the Aquatic Center at the Sports Complex; the skate park at the Sports Complex; the Cross Valley Connector Road; the L.A. County Sheriff; and Fire departments; the 80 Commu-

nity Gardens at Central Park; beautifully landscaped medians city-wide; and a locally elected City Council that is accessible to the community. Speaking of the Santa Clarita Public Library — they have what you need for your next adventure! From traditional resources to online materials and even passport services, the three library branches offer learning opportunities for all ages. The popular Summer Reading program has returned with this year’s out-ofthis-world theme “A Universe of Stories.” From rocket science to astronaut ice cream, children will enjoy reading along with fun activities and engaging events. There are also programs for teens and adults. In future endeavors, the new Canyon Country Community Center is currently under construction at the corner of Soledad Canyon Road and Sierra Highway. This much-anticipated new facility will transform the look and feel of this area of town with a beautiful new center surrounded by lush landscaping, play areas and public art pieces. Once complete, it will feature a full-size gymnasium, computer technology, arts and crafts, community and fitness rooms, walkways and demonstration kitchen to be used for teaching. In Saugus, “we’ve listened to residents who have requested a new community center/ library,” Mayor McLean said, and in Valencia, “we’re keeping infrastructure, such as pedestrian bridges and paseos, up to date and keeping our roads in good condition.” The city is constantly finding ways to improve traffic and build new roads along with bicycle lanes, Mayor McLean added, and the city’s ultimate goal is to maintain public safety while continuing to make sure it remains clean and graffiti free, “never being complacent but always moving forward to provide the amenities and quality of life that are important to our residents.” For more information about the City of Santa Clarita, visit https://www.santa-clarita. com.   

Henry Mayo’s New Patient Tower has 120 Beds, Surgery Suites and Womens Center I BY ALICIA DOYLE

n October of 2016, Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital broke ground on a new patient tower: a $164 million project that will provide 120 additional patient beds to the hospital’s campus in Valencia, and two new surgery suites in the new Center for Women and Newborns Unit. September 22 is the scheduled move-in date for patients in the new tower, which will feature all private patient rooms with private bathrooms, three new medical/surgical units with 30 beds in each unit, and two nursing stations on each floor. Additionally, the new Center for Women and Newborns, located on the second floor, will provide pre- and postpartum beds and labor and delivery beds, as well as furnishings that create a calm feeling for expecting moms. “Our goal is to provide the patients in our community with a modern, amenity-rich healing environment for their care,” said Jonathan Miller, vice president of Clinical Support and Facility Planning. “Of course, we’ve always prided ourselves on providing topnotch care and taking care of our patients in a compassionate way, but we haven’t had the private rooms in order to provide that extra level of patient care, and that’s one of the key features that the new tower is providing.” Essentially, “we’re doubling the size of our hospital — we’re adding 163,000 square feet,” Miller emphasized, adding that the current nursing care buildings were built in 1975 and 1990. “We’ve had pretty older infrastructure for quite some time.”

New Private Rooms

All the new patient rooms will be private, “which we haven’t had in the past,” he said. “When hospitals were built in the 70s and 90s, they were mostly built for doubleoccupancy. Now the trend is to have private accommodations, which is an important consideration for the patient and the family and for visitors. “So what we’ve done is provide an amenity-rich envi-

ronment. Patients, more and more, are consumers of health care and they have certain expectations, just as they would for other services they purchase. Hospitals need to meet those expectations by making sure we are providing a clean and comfortable environment that is highly conducive to the healing process.”

Center for Women and Newborns

One of the biggest features of the new tower is the all-new Center for Women and Newborns, which is fully modern and takes up an entire floor of the building. It consists of 22 private pre- and post-partum rooms, seven labor and delivery rooms, and two dedicated surgical suites for C-sections. “In the past, we’ve performed C-sections in our main operating room area, so now we’ll have dedicated Csection suites that are located in the women’s unit — that’s a big plus for us,” Miller said. Another new feature in the women’s unit is the addition of an obstetrics emergency department. “The concept there is that we have 24-hour coverage by an obstetrician who is here on site, and when an expecting mother suspects she’s going into labor and needs to come to the hospital, she can come directly to our obstetrics emer-

gency department instead of our regular emergency room,” said Miller. “And this allows expecting mothers to be triaged really quickly by a specialty physician.

Expanded Patient Services

Additional features include expanded laboratory services and materials management services; as well as a rooftop helipad with direct access to the Emergency Department that is expected to improve response times, which is especially important for trauma patients. The new patient tower will also feature numerous amenities that haven’t been offered in the past, including modern entertainment systems for the patients, and visiting hours that enable family members and loved ones to visit 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. “Our patients can be visited 24-7 like a hotel,” Miller said. “We’re also providing in every patient room a sleepover sofa for a family member to spend the night with their loved one. That’s a more modern way of taking care of patients.”

Food Services Expanded

A new kitchen is also part of the modernization, “which is a big feature of the new tower,” said Miller, adding that the kitchen staff currently does “an amazing job” of serving 238 patients out of a kitchen designed for a 99-bed hospital. The new tower will also offer a new café and dining area for visitors and family members that features an outdoor seating plaza where guests can sit outside underneath umbrellas. Special design aspects of the outdoor plaza include a garden, and a surrounding mural painted by well-known local artist Frank Rock. “He’s done several murals in and around Santa Clarita, so we commissioned him to do a mural of an abstract waterfall,” Miller explained, “it’s intended to provide a calming, peaceful place that will be a respite for families and visitors.”

Next Steps

The next big milestone for the Lynda Mayer, left, perinatal nurse consultant, and Reyna Marcus, womens new patient tower, expected services clinical RN, in one of the new patient rooms of the Center for in June, will be the granting of Women and Newborns in the New Patient Tower at Henry Mayo Newhall a certificate of occupancy by Hospital. the state’s healthcare building authority. After that, staff can go into the building to train and develop their competencies by learning about all the new equipment, paths of travel and different work flows that are changing. The staff will also undergo two what are called “Days in the Life,” which are events during which they’ll undergo realistic scenario testing. “We’ll bring in staff, physicians and volunteers, and we’ll run through various clinical scenarios,” Miller said. “For instance, a patient being admitted to a medical surgical unit from the emergency department, or, a patient from the fourth floor is going to surgery and then admitted to the ICU. These scenarios will help our nurses and other clinical support staff get acquainted with our new space and learn how to best to care for patients in this new environment.” Non-clinical support staff will also undergo extensive training, including housekeepers, security personnel, food service workers, and those who oversee transportation. “We want to make sure that we resolved any issues we find … then we’ll run additional scenarios to make sure all the work flows in our new spaces are functioning as we intend them to,” Miller said. A mock California Department of Public Health licensing survey will also take place, “which is basically our own self-assessment of our readiness for state licensing,” he said. “Following that is the real survey, which is a two-day event where state officials come in with a team of inspectors to look at every aspect of our new facility, from safety to patient care to work flow to fire safety — basically every aspect of the care that’s going to be given in the new patient tower. Once we’re granted our license, we will move our patients into the new tower and begin caring for them in the new space. We’re all very much looking forward to that day!”  

Action Drug Rehabs is About Saving Lives

BY ALICIA DOYLE

A

s the Founder of Action Drug Rehabs, Cary Quashen and his dedicated team of substance abuse and mental health professionals have dedicated over 35 years to helping individuals suffering from alcohol, and or drugs, and other cooccurring mental health issues. “We’re about saving lives and helping people beat their chemical dependency, alcoholism and mental health issues,” Quashen said. “This is especially important in today’s times with the kinds of drugs out there now. Every hour, we’re losing way too many people in this country.” Action Drug Rehabs has assisted countless families in Southern California. The program is headquartered in Santa Clarita, where Quashen lives, and also serves Ventura and Kern counties. Action Drug Rehabs has many different levels of care depending on the participants individual treatment needs, including intensive outpatient programs for those that need the extra structure and support who still need to continue their daily routine. Intensive Outpatient meets three times a week, three hours a day, and specifically focuses on alcohol, drugs, relapse prevention, impulse control, self-esteem, family dynamics, and other co-occurring issues.

From Left: Cary and Sean Quashen. PHOTO BY CORY RUBIN / THE SIGNAL Action Drug rehabs also offers short-term detoxification and residential treatment for individuals who absolutely need to get out of the situation they’re in and need to escape daily triggers and stress to be in safe structured environment. A major component that makes Action Drug Rehabs stand apart is the fact that many of the staff “have been there already and been through it, and come through the other side,” Quashen emphasized. “Even though they’re professionals, they can relate.” A unique offering that cannot be found elsewhere is that treatment centers are local, “because we believe that treating people in their own community creates way better success,” he said. “We want to transition people to sober support in their community.” People who receive treatment outside of their community lose the benefit of connecting with their local resources

early on. Action believes this is a key factor in their long-term success. “They’re going to a great place, but then they come back to the same old, same old. We believe by treating people in their own community and connecting them to a sober community in their own back yard will give them a much better opportunity for long term success” Action’s nonprofit arm, Action — a Parent and Teen Support Program — has a strong presence in the community by offering weekly parent and teen support programs, touching on alcohol, drugs, school, self-esteem, gang involvement, etc. Action also offers support groups through the school district. Action also partners with the city of Santa Clarita and Sheriff’s department on many on-going preventative programs, such as school district interventions when needed, assemblies and the T.I.D.E. pro-

gram — Training, Intervention and Drug Education — established in cooperation with the William S. Hart School District. “Any student that gets caught with substance in school has to go to T.I.D.E., which is a two-day intense program that’s run by our nonprofit,” Quashen said. Since Quashen launched Action, former President George Bush, Governor Pete Wilson, former Senator Alan Cranston, former Mayor Tom Bradley, city council members and countless school districts have acknowledged Action. It has also been featured in several public interest articles, as well as television news broadcasts. Quashen has also made many guest appearances as a family and crisis intervention specialist on talk shows, including Good Morning America, The Doctors, The Montel Williams Show, Judge Judy and The Ricki Lake Show. Above all, “we’re in the business of helping people, and the people we’re helping are your brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles – no one’s immune to substance abuse,” Quashen emphasized. “One in every six Americans in their lifetime will have a drug problem. These are not bad people. These are people that are sick and making bad choices. If we can help them make better choices, everybody wins.” For more information, visit www.actiondrugrehab.com/ or call (800) 367-8336.  

ust like any other technology, hearing aids are always evolving to become more intuitive, perform better, and improve the user’s experience. Today’s hearing aids are designed to be small, discreet, and compatible with your lifestyle. For example, new technology from Oticon works seamlessly with accessories to change the way you hear the world around you.

A few of the latest updates from Oticon include:

The Oticon ON App With the Oticon ON App, you can connect your Oticon OPN hearing aids to other Internet-connected devices. This allows you to receive information directly to your hearing aids such as: a notification when the doorbell rings, the weather forecast, news alerts, and more. You can also control the lights in your house, security systems, or smart appliances in your kitchen. The possibilities are endless! The ConnectClip With the ConnectClip, you can make hands-free phone calls and stream music from your smartphone. It transmits a call directly to both of your hearing aids, and the builtin microphones receive your voice, so you can be heard clearly by the person you are speaking with. This is also true for video calls using apps such as Skype and Facetime. You

Kevin Bolder Au.D. can even listen to someone speaking from a distance using the remote microphone functionality. The ConnectClip is compatible with Apple and Android devices. The Oticon TV Adapter Avoid arguments with your family over the volume of the TV! Oticon’s TV Adapter allows you to stream your favorite movies and TV shows directly to your hearing aids while leaving the volume at a comfortable level for others. The most common reasons people seek her out include preventive health care, pain, diminished quality of life, fatigue and weight loss. Over the years, she has had a tremendous positive impact on people’s overall quality of life. “My care has eliminated spinal surgery for many, corrected chronic digestive issues and chronic fatigue, guided patients through healthy weight loss, and maintained a better quality of life for the young and the elderly,” Dr. Chenaur said. As a result of Dr. Chenaur’s diversified background, patients

have also reported relief from such conditions as Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, PMS, Fibromyalgia, stress and burnout and sugar metabolism imbalances. “Most people don’t know what it feels like to be really healthy,” Dr. Chenaur added. “We have come to accept that ‘not sick’ means healthy; this is not true. I seek to educate and empower my patients and improve their quality of life, reduce the need for surgery and medication whenever possible, and help people navigate their way to a happier, healthier individual.” She accepts most PPO insurance and limited HMO (Blue Shield) policies that include chiropractic coverage.  

Audiology Associates is Hearing Healthcare at its Best BY ALICIA DOYLE

A

udiology Associates in Santa Clarita is dedicated to helping people of all ages with their hearing needs, from babies to those in their 100s. Audiology Associates is owned by Kevin Bolder, Au.D., who was a managing audiologist at a busy San Fernando Valley practice for 12 years before joining the group in 2011 and assuming ownership in 2018. Also on staff is Patrice Rifkind, Au.D., Andrea Carbaugh, Au.D. and Fran Bolder, Au.D. Dr. Rifkind founded Audiology Associates and is author of the book, “Hear Better: A Guide to Finding the Best Hearing Healthcare.” Dr. Carbaugh worked at the Veterans Administration and Nemours Children’s Hospital. Dr. Fran Bolder provides cochlear implant services with 19 years working with both adult and pediatric cochlear implant recipients. “Our practice is unique in that all of the providers are doctors of audiology,” Dr. Bolder said, “with a combined experience of over 75 years.” Since all four audiologists live and work in Santa Clarita, they are part of the community. “We see our patients around town frequently, whether it’s out shopping, at our children’s schools or other events,” Dr. Bolder said. “It’s fulfilling to help improve the lives of our friends, family and neighbors

From left: Audiologists Andrea Carbaugh, Patrice Rifkind, Kevin Bolder (owner), Fran Bolder and John Davis. PHOTO BY TOM CRUZE / THE SIGNAL in our own community.” Dr. Bolder and his staff are proud to assist patients with a variety of hearing healthcare needs including hearing evaluations, fitting hearing aids, solutions for tinnitus management, evaluations for cochlear implant candidacy and cochlear implant programming. “We offer hearing aids, as well as other hearing accessories to assist patients in a variety of listening environments,” Dr. Bolder said. “Cochlear implants are an option for patients who are severely hearing impaired and cannot make adequate use of traditional hearing aids. The device is surgically implanted by a physician and the programming of the device, which allows the patient to hear, is performed in our office. No other practice in Santa Clarita has an experienced cochlear implant audiologist on staff. “Our youngest hearing aid recipients have been three month olds. We are experts at working with patients of

all ages,” Dr. Bolder said. “Fitting hearing aids requires skill: making them fit properly, finetuning the sound, helping patients hear as clearly as possible … it is an art form that takes years of experience. You cannot buy a hearing aid online and achieve the same results.” Other services include custom ear plugs for musicians’ hearing protection and in-ear monitors for performing and/or recording, as well as assistivelistening devices. Dr. Bolder and his staff also volunteer at local senior centers and assisted-living facilities providing screenings, hearing aid services and educational seminars. “We visit many of the senior facilities in our community to screen for hearing loss, clean hearing aids and perform earwax removal,” said Dr. Bolder. All are also welcome to visit the office for a screening and consultation, regardless of insurance status. “We’re not just operating a business,” Dr. Bolder emphasized. “Seniors have become

a huge part of our population. We enjoy helping people hear better and live better lives.” Studies show a correlation between hearing loss and cognitive disorders. “Hearing loss is thought to be a factor in the development of dementia due to the lack of auditory input to the brain.” In addition to cognitive disorders, hearing loss can also be linked to other health conditions, such as diabetes, kidney disease, heart disease and balance problems. “If you or your loved ones have any of these conditions, a comprehensive hearing test is recommended,” he said. Audiology Associates has won numerous awards, including the Daily News Readers Choice Award every year since 2011 and The Signal’s “Best Of” award every year since 2009. Dr. Rifkind was honored to receive the prestigious 2012 Santa Clarita Valley Leadership Award for Minority/Women Owned Business of the Year. “We take great pride in these accolades and invite you to experience what makes us special and the audiology office of choice when it comes to solutions for your hearing. The staff at Audiology Associates looks forward to helping you with your hearing healthcare needs.” For more information, call 661-284-1900 or visit www. AudiologyAssociates.net.  

High Desert Driving School Meets all Driving Needs BY ALICIA DOYLE

H

igh Desert Driving School was established in 1991 when driver’s education and training was being phased out by the public schools. Because High Desert Driving School was one of only a few commercial driving schools at the time, many driving schools today have duplicated their policies, techniques and procedures. The business team of owner Kristine Bistline and operator Troy Carter has three decades of experience in the industry. Both are past presidents of the Driving School Association of California and past board members of the Driving School Association of the Americas, which includes schools from Canada, Great Briton and Guam. Bistline was the second female president of DSAC since 1953, and she later served for three years as a legal and legislative chair working closely with the association’s lobbyist in Sacramento. She was also named DSAA Woman of the Year and has worked with local assembly members and senators to get legislation passed that protects the public, including the added instructor brake that is now required in a driver-training vehicle. In other accomplishments, she has been active in writing driver education curriculum and has consulted with, and for, the California DMV. Carter served as DSAC president and DSAA western regional vice president. Together, they bring a plethora of experience, skills and information. Both have been actively involved in teaching and training seminars for the DSAA and DSAC — but especially driving schools throughout the state of California. Their main office is located in Lancaster, but they service the entire Antelope

and Santa Clarita valleys with students from outlying areas seeking out their expertise. They accept students from charter and private-school programs, as well as programs paid through state and federal funds. Bistline and Carter have put programs together for employers so they would not lose their insurance due to their employees’ driving errors; as well as local youth programs for local communities to discourage teens and young adults from driving without permits or licenses. These practices can cause long-term problems for themselves, their families and their communities. “We are committed to our craft and have seen many changes, not just in the laws and rules of the road, but the attitudes of the driving public,” said Bistline, adding they were originally — and still are — against online driver education programs, “but have been forced to offer it because it is what the public wants.” Unlike their competitors, they still offer in-classroom driver education where the quality of information provided is still the key to passing the knowledge portion of testing. “Our concerted goal is to turn out safe, effective, low-risk drivers,” Bistline said, “but we are aware that can only be accomplished with a receptive student and family that gives the students the legally required instruction they need, and then some.” Unlike most driving schools, they offer advanced driving skills and a multitude of other instructional services beyond the basics required by the state for those

under the age of 18. High Desert Driving school also caters to adults over 18 and seniors seeking help with both the written test and driving test preparation for a Class C permit and license. “Private tutoring and DMV drive-test preparation in our car or yours is available,” Bistline said. “You can even utilize our vehicle on the day of the drive test exam.” High Desert Driving School gives the best in customer service and has gained a reputation for it, Carter added. “When others cheat, we stay the course,” he said. “A life is too valuable not to take driving seriously, and we do. We started with one vehicle and built our fleet to six, not wanting to get too big and lose our customer satisfaction. Building relationships is important to us. The majority of our customers today is referred, and will tell you they got their money’s worth.” High Desert Driving School, located at 829 W. Avenue J in Lancaster, services the entire Antelope and Santa Clarita valleys. For more information, call 661-940-8835 or visit high desertdrivingschool.com.  

Academy Swim’s ‘Play with Purpose’ Philosophy BY ALICIA DOYLE

A

cademy Swim Club is the only year-round, child-friendly aquatic safety program in the Santa Clarita Valley that has provided a top quality, internationally recognized learn-to-swim program to thousands of young children for more than three decades. “We are so confident in what we do, all of our swim lessons are guaranteed,” said Dakota Miller, vice president, adding that a free lesson is given if you’re not 100% satisfied. There are many aspects that make Academy Swim Club unique, including its Water Safety Program conducted three times per year, in which instructors teach water safety and rescue skills to all students. The skills taught include how to jump in the water with their clothes on and how to get out unassisted, as well as how to float in all positions. Students also learn the “reach-andthrow don’t go” concept, how to float in all positions, and how to utilize the emergency number, 9-1-1. “Safety for our swimmers, both in and out of our pool/facility, is our number one priority,” said Miller, further emphasizing that safety is taught in all aspects of their program. Another special offering is the Baby Swim Program, which targets children as young as two weeks old, because infants have a swim reflex until they’re about six months old. “This doesn’t mean they can’t swim after that age, they just might not have the natural reflex but it can be quickly regained,” Miller explained. Academy Swim Club also offers open swim times throughout the week, which allow their swim families to practice skills they are working on in their lesson. In other special attributes, the club’s indoor pool is heated to 92 degrees, which allows swimmers the comfort they need to be able to focus on what really matters throughout the class. The most popular offerings include private, semi-private and group settings, as well as the baby swim Parent-N-Me class. Academy Swim Club also offers birthday parties, including a tropical-themed pool party year-round. “Also, our instructors go

Jacob Miller, 3, enjoys Academy Swim Club. PHOTO COURTESY MILLER FAMILY through 40 hours of certification before being hired, then training is continued multiple times per month throughout the year,” Miller said. “All our instructors also eventually get Infant Certified to be able to teach our Baby Swim classes, and are Red Cross Lifeguard Certified, which includes CPR, First Aid and AED.” Academy Swim Club is also involved in the local community in numerous capacities by donating birthday parties to most schools, charities and non-profit organizations to help with their fundraisers. They also raise awareness of drowning prevention through-

out the Santa Clarita Valley by dropping off drowning prevention checklists to kindergartens and preschools, as well as provide Safer 3 teaching aid equipment to schools so they can educate their students on water safety. In related endeavors, they conduct a drowning simulation at their facility that allows parents to see and feel what it would be like if a child drowned. “On top of that, we hand out free Water Watcher whistle sets to participants of expos around the valley to ensure that parents are aware that they need to have at least one set of eyes on the pool at all times,” Miller said. “With this, they can then take turns each watching the pool, whether it be at a community pool or backyard pool party. All we want is for the Santa Clarita Valley to be a drowning-free city, no matter if we get their business or not.” The main philosophy at Academy Swim Club is “Play with Purpose,” meaning instructors ensure that every lesson is taught through play, which is then retained by children much more efficiently and effectively. “Swimming is the only ac-

tive sport we can participate in from our first breath to our last, it doesn’t require a team, coach, opponent, uniform or specific abilities,” Miller said. “When introduced properly, water is a therapeutic environment which is healing, stimulates physical and emotional development, increases self-esteem, bonds family members, and adds joy and excitement to life.” Above all, the ultimate goal of Academy Swim Club is to have every child be a swimmer by age three. “Since drowning is the number one cause of accidental death in children five and under in California, if we start young, then we can hopefully change that statistic locally,” Miller said. “We also strive to exceed all of our patrons’ expectations and give the highest quality swim lessons in Southern California.: Academy Swim Club serves all of the Santa Clarita Valley, with locations in Valencia and Newhall. Crippen Mortuaries:

Family -owned business offers personalized service BY ALICIA DOYLE

F

or more than nine decades, Crippen Mortuaries has always been there for families in their greatest time of need. As an independent, familyowned mortuary, Crippen specializes in an affordable level of personalized care and attention to detail which other corporate model funeral homes simply cannot match. “Families that choose Crippen are not just another number — but instead are treated as if they were part of the family themselves,” said Robert Hansen, managing funeral director. Crippen supports the families and their right to having a variety of economical choices in their funeral planning needs. “We pride ourselves on our ability to offer families of all walks of life affordable funeral options, without ever sacrificing on the quality,” Hansen said. “We even assist families with finding the most affordable grave plots available by working with cemetery brokers to insure the savings is passed on directly to the families, often times saving them thousands of dollars.” As a full-service funeral home, Crippen’s Santa Clarita Valley Burial & Cremation Service offers traditional funeral and memorial services, graveside ceremonies, military services, burial or entombment

in any cemetery, pre-arrangements with burial and cremation insurance, a reception facility, in-home arrangements, and assistance with locating discount burial plots with cemetery brokers. The most popular offering at Crippen Mortuaries is the $1,595 Direct Cremation Package. “Local families have regularly been able to save upwards of $1,000 by choosing Crippen over our corporate competitors,” Hansen said. “We also offer a Traditional Church Funeral & Burial Package starting at $4,900 with an upgraded 18g steel casket included, which is a great value.” From Crippen’s very first Yelp review back in 2013, Lottie W.

summed it up best when she wrote about her positive experience: “I cannot say how wonderful these people are,” she noted. “Every single person at Crippen takes a personal interest and handles their jobs as if it was their own family member. They just handled my father’s funeral and from the pre-planning to the funeral, they could not have been better. It is not a plastic, soulless business, but a warm and caring family who handles their duties as professionals.” At Crippen Mortuaries information is always free and is readily given out by our compassionate staff over the phone, Hansen added.

“There are no high pressure sales tactics at Crippen, like some mortuaries that insist on the family coming in immediately to their offices to sit with a counselor before providing even basic pricing, or answering any questions they might have about the process,” Hansen said. “Families have repeatedly expressed to us the no pressure style at Crippen is one of the many things that sets us apart from the rest.” Crippen’s Santa Clarita Valley Burial & Cremation Service is located at 16653 Sierra Highway in Canyon Country.
