Tips for a Budget-Friendly Fall Vacation

If you’re looking to get away, fall is a perfect time to plan an escape. With smaller crowds at many popular destinations and more comfortable weather, scenic autumn landscapes and cozy hideaways await.

To get your planning started, consider these tips to enjoy a spectacular fall vacation without breaking the bank.

Choose a Destination with Beautiful Scenery

When planning a fall vacation, research the cost of living for potential destinations. Some places may have lower costs for accommodations, dining and attractions, allowing you to stretch your budget further. Considering destinations known for their stunning fall foliage, such as New England, can allow you to take advantage of budget-friendly activities, like nature walks or sightseeing, that capitalize on the beauty and charm of the season.

Time Your Trip to Take Advantage of Deals

Timing is key when it comes to finding the best deals. Consider traveling during the shoulder season, which is the period just before or after peak tourist seasons. During this time, prices for accommodations and attractions are often lower and there are fewer crowds. If you have the freedom to choose when to go on vacation, look for off-peak days or midweek travel. Prices tend to be lower during these times compared to weekends or popular travel holidays.

Pack Essentials to Save on Unnecessary Purchases

Packing strategically can help you save money and avoid unnecessary purchases. Consider packing these essentials:

Layered clothing Instead of bulky sweaters or coats, opt for lightweight layers that can be easily combined to keep you warm.

Reusable water bottles Bringing a reusable water bottle helps you avoid buying bottled water and reduces waste.

Snacks Packing snacks like granola bars or dried fruit can help you reduce food costs while you’re out and about.

Travel-size toiletries Transfer your favorite products into smaller containers or purchase travel-size bottles instead of buying pre-packaged versions.

Pick Budget-Friendly Activities and Attractions

Popular destinations often offer a wide range of budget-friendly activities and attractions. Consider these ideas that won’t break the bank:

Hiking and nature walks Take advantage of the beautiful fall foliage by exploring hiking trails and nature reserves. Many of these outdoor activities are free or have minimal entrance fees.

Local festivals and events Research local festivals and events happening during your trip to immerse yourself in the unique culture and traditions of the area.

Local markets Explore farmers markets or craft markets to discover unique products and support local businesses. Often free to enter, these markets offer opportunities to sample local food and purchase souvenirs.

Museums and galleries Look for museums and galleries that offer free or discounted admission during certain days or times to explore local art and history without spending a fortune.

Save on Accommodations

Finding affordable accommodations during the peak of fall can be challenging, but with these tips, you can save money while still enjoying a comfortable stay:

Book in advance Plan your vacation early and take advantage of early bird discounts or promotional offers.

Consider alternative accommodations Instead of traditional hotels, explore options like vacation rentals, hostels or bed and breakfasts, which can be more budget-friendly and provide a unique and personalized experience.

Stay outside the city center Accommodations located outside main tourist areas are generally more affordable. Consider staying in nearby suburbs or towns and utilize public transportation to explore the city.

Use price comparison tools Take advantage of price comparison websites to compare rates across different accommodations to find the best deals and save money on your stay.

Road Trip to Seven Stunning Southern California Lakes

Aday on the lake is the perfect antidote to the stressful routines of everyday life. Between the fresh air, the beautiful scenery, the cool water, and the array of fun activities available, our amazing lakes are just waiting to recharge our batteries.

Today, I am sending you off to visit not one, but seven stunning destinations on this epic Southern California lake road trip. We are mixing things up with a few well-known lakes, some lesser-known spots, and a couple of my absolute favorites.

Of course, this is a lot of ground to cover in one day, but if you are particularly ambitious (and don’t want to spend too much time in any one location), it can be done. However, I would recommend using this a guide for a weekend getaway, a few day trips, or even a longer vacation.

Use this interactive Google map (bit.ly/4gAKBSp) to get directions and adjust your route and make this your perfect trip.

You can start at either end of this route, or anywhere in the middle if you are planning a shorter trip, but I am going to start this off at Big Bear Lake in the San Bernardino National Forest.

This popular recreation area is a true year-round destination with world-class skiing and snowboarding in winter, wildflowers in spring, gorgeous fall foliage, boating, and water activities in the summer, and spectacular hiking trails all year long.

Next, we are off to another incredibly picturesque lake in the San Bernardino Mountains, Lake Arrowhead. Rent a boat or even take a guided tour

of this sapphire lake, then maybe explore the lakeside village.

With wonderful shopping, dining and architecture, this quaint town is reminiscent of Switzerland and one of several destinations in the state that make a great dupe for a European getaway.

Not far from Lake Arrowhead is a lesser-known hidden gem known as Lake Gregory in the tiny town of Crestline. Despite being less of a go-to than the first two lakes on our list, this lake is a magnificent destination for lake activities.

This scenic lake has a sandy beach and swimming area, shady picnic areas, kayaking and boating, an inflatable waterpark during summer, and gentle hiking trails. Lake Gregory is also an underrated fishing spot!

Silverwood Lake is another hidden gem that many Southern Californians don’t even know exists, but it is a worthy destination, especially for families. Enjoy hiking, biking, picnics, fishing and boating. There are two swimming beaches manned by lifeguards and a Nature Center where you can learn about the history of the lake and the abundant wildlife that call the lake area home. You will definitely want to plan a little time to enjoy this lake.

Silverwood Lake also has a beautiful campground with over 136 campsites and full hookups for RVs, so it’s a great place to pause and spend the night on your road trip.

The very easily accessible Castaic Lake is one of the clearest lakes in the state. It is actually a reservoir with two bodies of water and a ton of family-friendly activities. There are trails for hiking,

biking, and horseback riding, boat rentals, swim beaches, cool playgrounds for the kids, picnic and barbecue areas, and like Silverwood Lake, plenty of campsites to extend your stay.

Situated near the charming town of Ojai, Lake Casitas is one of my favorite lakes for both day trips and camping. The area is so beautiful, whether you get out on the lake in a boat to do some fishing or explore the interesting shoreline, camp among the trees or on a hill overlooking the water, or hang out in one of the scenic picnic areas. You can also grab breakfast or lunch at the Marina Cafe. Lastly, there is a colorful waterpark with a play structure that features slides, bridges, dump buckets, etc., as well as a lazy river for tubing.

Last on our journey (or first, if you prefer) is another of my happy places, Cachuma Lake. The scenery from every part of the turquoise water’s edge is stunning, as is the beautiful drive from Santa Barbara to reach it. Of course, the views from the water are just as amazing, making this an incredible — and uncrowded — place for kayaking and boating. The campground is also wonderful, offering spacious RV hookup sites, picturesque waterfront tent sites, delightful cabins, and several yurts with incredible vistas.

Ready for a water-filled adventure? Grab your keys, swimsuit, fishing gear, kayaks or maybe even gas up your RV for a fun tour of some of our gorgeous lakes. Oh, and no Southern California lake road trip is complete without a lot of yummy road trip snacks and a great cooler. Now, hit the road!

October is mostly about the runup to Halloween, but it’s not all ghosts, goblins and ghouls in California this month. There are numerous ways to have fun including a panda encounter in San Diego, a clam festival in Pismo Beach and a bit of horse racing at Del Mar.

Visit the Pandas

San Diego Zoo, 2920 Zoo Drive, San Diego 92101 Info zoo.sandiegozoo.org

After traveling 7,000 miles from China, two giant pandas made their official debut at the San Diego Zoo on Aug. 8. Five-year-old male Yun Chuan and four-year-old female Xin Bao can be seen munching on bamboo and lumbering around Panda Ridge, a newly built habitat at the San Diego Zoo.

The bears’ home at the zoo in San Diego is designed to imitate their native terrain in China’s Sichuan, Gansu and Shaanxi provinces. Panda Ridge has rolling topography, tree logs, boulders, climbing structures, leafy bamboo and lush plants. It is four times larger than the zoo’s previous panda habitat.

The San Diego Zoo’s panda history dates to 1996, when China’s Wolong Panda Preserve loaned the zoo two bears as part of a collaborative conservation effort. One panda was Yun Chuan’s grandmother, who lived at the zoo for 23 years. The life expectancy of giant pandas in the wild is about 15 years, but they live much longer in captivity, according to the San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance. Between 1996 and 2019, six panda cubs were born at the zoo, including Yun Chuan’s mother in 2007. By 2019, all of San Diego’s pandas had been returned to China. In February 2024, the China Wildlife Conservation Association and the San

Diego Zoo signed a cooperative agreement that resulted in the 10-year loan of Yun Chuan and Xin Bao.

There are two ways you can experience the San Diego Zoo’s giant pandas:

Get timed tickets When you arrive at the zoo, scan the ticket QR code on signs located on the main plaza and throughout the zoo. Select an available time and then head to the timed ticket line at Panda Ridge at the designated time. You can also request a timed ticket at any ticket booth window. Timed tickets are free and available at the zoo only on the day of your visit.

Head to the standby line If you don’t want to commit to a time, you can join the standby line at Panda Ridge. Panda lovers start lining up at 9:30 a.m.

‘Another Happy Day’ is a Vibrant, Utterly Real Film

‘Another Happy Day’

 (out of four)

Gravitas Ventures presents a film written and directed by Nora Fiffer. Running time; 91 minutes. No MPAA rating. On demand.

We normally don’t kick off a positive review by warning away a certain segment of the viewership, but as much as I enjoyed the slice-of-real-life comedy/ drama “Another Happy Day,” you might not want to watch this one if you’ve recently welcomed a child into your family.

It might feel too much like looking in the mirror.

Written with knowing style and directed with economic confidence by Nora Fiffer and filmed in the Chicago area, “Another Happy Day” is an unvarnished, dryly funny gem

about a young mother named Joanna (Evanston-born standout Lauren Lapkus from “Orange Is the New Black” and “Crashing”) who loves her baby but is waiting for her baby to love her back.

As Joanna puts it, “I’m not, like, a mom — I just, I have a baby, you know?”

Joanna is a 35-year-old artist who hasn’t made any new art in a long while and is struggling mightily with postpartum emotions as she nurses and tries to bond with newborn baby Alma.

Her husband, Lucien (Jean Elie, “Insecure”), prides himself on being a participatory dad as he denies Joanna caffeine and shields Alma’s eyes from the blue light of the TV screen — but it’s clear Lucien can’t wait to dash out the door to work every morning, leaving Joanna to spend another endless day at home.

(Every time Alma drifts off to sleep, Joanna says, “Hey, phone, start timer,” and then “Hey, phone, end timer” when Alma awakes, because apparently someone told her it was important to keep track of Alma’s sleep patterns. Alas, these naps often last about two minutes.) Not that Jo-

anna doesn’t love Alma with all her heart; she just didn’t expect she’d feel this overwhelmed, this isolated, this lonely.

When Joanna tries to return to her job as a freelancer for an architecture/design studio, her icy-cool boss, Irene (the priceless Carrie Coon in a memorable one-scene turn), tells her that job is no longer hers.

Meanwhile, Joanna’s mother lives far away and can’t visit until Thanksgiving, but she informs Joanna she actually does have family living in Chicago: “Aunt Miriam … your dad’s brother Leonard’s ex-wife.” In other words, a virtual stranger Joanna hasn’t seen since she was only a little older than Alma.

The wonderful Chicago theater mainstay Marilyn Dodds Frank plays Miriam, an acerbic and eccentric actor who sometimes has manic episodes when she doesn’t take her medication. Miriam has little interest in bonding with Joanna or her baby — she sets down a doggie bed for Alma on the living room floor — but Joanna has nowhere else to turn, and Miriam doesn’t have anybody, either.

The relationship between Joanna and Miriam takes on the distinctive tone of a 1970s movie about mismatched friendships, with Lapkus and Franks making beautiful dramatic music together. (We’re also treated to a cameo by beloved Chicago treasure Tim Kazurinsky, as the casting director when Miriam auditions for a TV spot.)

“Another Happy Day” is a vibrant and utterly real film, with sharp writing and endearingly relatable performances. Even the new parents who might find that it hits too close to home right now will surely enjoy it years down the line as they think: Yep, that’s what we went through, too. 

Five Brain-Healthy Habits for Healthy Aging

Last Month was Healthy Aging Month, and as part of that, the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America (AFA) is providing 5 brain healthy habits to promote healthy aging and reduce the risk of developing dementia.

“Building good habits, even incrementally, goes a long way towards promoting healthy aging and good brain health,” said Dr. Allison B. Reiss, a member of AFA’s Medical, Scientific, and Memory Screening Advisory Board. “Taking a few simple steps, in ways that work for you, will make a positive difference, and healthy aging month is a great time to start.”

AFA encourages individuals to take the following five brain healthy steps:

Get out of the house Do not sit in front of the TV or computer all day. Get some fresh air and enjoy time surrounded by nature.

Vitamin D is important for the brain People whose levels are low are more likely to develop Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia. Although sunlight is the most common source of vitamin D, many people avoid sun exposure. Even though

milk is fortified with vitamin D, a lot of yogurt brands are not, so check labels. Mushrooms are also an excellent source of natural vitamin D and a good dietary option, especially for someone who is vegan.

Avoid empty calories If you crave sweets, make

sure there is at least some nutritional value and some component that is filling and satiating, rather than just eating candy or junk food. Good examples are strawberries or banana slices dipped in chocolate (at least you get some fruit), a peanut butter and chocolate combo, a mix of nuts and chocolate, and a brownie recipe made with beans or zucchini.

Avoid head injury Traumatic brain injury increases the risk of developing dementia and is a big problem that can be averted with care, helmets and other headgear, seatbelts and measures to prevent falls. If you do sustain a concussion, follow all protocols outlined by your health care provider and take every precaution to steer clear of another one.

Keep in touch with friends and family Nurture relationships. These connections enrich your life and keep you thinking. Combat loneliness with a support network.

Individuals wishing to learn more about healthy aging and promoting good brain health can contact the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America’s Helpline at 866-232-8484 or visit AFA’s website, www.alzfdn. org. 

Repairing Common Types of Wall Damage

Maintaining the walls of your home is essential for both aesthetic appeal and structural integrity. Over time, walls can suffer from various types of damage, whether it’s from everyday wear and tear, accidents or environmental factors.

From the more common drywall holes to texture damage, concrete wall cracks and water damage, understanding how to effectively address these issues is crucial for any homeowner. Proper repairs not only restore the appearance of your walls but also prevent further deterioration and potentially costly repairs down the line. Here are practical solutions for repairing different types of wall damage, ensuring your home remains in top condition.

Drywall Hole Repairs

Drywall hole repairs are among the most common wall repairs homeowners encounter. Many drywall holes can be easily patched with spackling or a drywall patch kit. For the ultimate spackling option, DAP Fast Dry Premium Spackling is a professional-grade spackling compound with a smooth, one-strike application that leaves a rock-solid coat that won’t sink, shrink or crack, offering superior impact resistance and is paint ready in as little as just 15 minutes.

peel, knockdown and popcorn textures. Unlike competitive products on the market, DAP’s aerosol cans feature Aim Tech technology that offers a 60-degree adjustable nozzle angle to easily repair vertical, overhead and hard-to-reach areas with one can, providing users much flexibility when completing projects. Once dry, the wall can be painted to match the rest of the room. A useful tip is to practice on a piece of cardboard before applying the texture to the wall to ensure you achieve the desired consistency and pattern.

Concrete Wall Repairs

Concrete wall repairs are typically needed when cracks or spalling occur, often due to settling or exposure to the elements. For small cracks, applying concrete repair caulk or epoxy filler can restore the wall’s integrity. Larger cracks may require chiseling out the damaged area and filling it with a concrete patching compound. Spalling, where the surface of the concrete flakes or chips away, involves removing the damaged material and applying a new layer of concrete. To ensure a durable repair, it’s essential to clean the area thoroughly before applying any patching materials and to use a bonding agent to help the new concrete adhere to the old.

Water Damage Repairs

Another great solution for repairing drywall holes is the Eclipse Rapid Wall Repair Patch. Texture Damage Repairs

Texture damage repairs are necessary when the wall’s surface texture is compromised, often after fixing cracks or holes. The challenge lies in matching the existing wall texture to create a professional look. For a seamless repair, try DAP’s 2in1 Wall & Ceiling Spray Texture for orange

Water damage repairs are critical not only for aesthetic reasons but also for preventing mold and structural issues. The first step in repairing water-damaged walls is to identify and eliminate the source of the moisture to prevent future problems. Once the area is dry, remove any damaged drywall or plaster and replace it with new material. It’s essential to treat the area for mold or mildew, using appropriate cleaning solutions, before proceeding with repairs. After replacing the damaged sections, apply a stain-blocking primer to prevent water stains from bleeding through the paint. For lasting results, ensure the area is completely dry before painting and consider using moisture-resistant materials in areas prone to dampness. For more wall repair tips, visit DAP. com. (BPT) 

A Plan to Minimize Insect Damage — Without Spraying

We’ve long known that monocultures are susceptible to insect and disease problems, which are often controlled by chemicals. A polyculture (a fancy word for growing a variety of plants in a garden space), on the other hand, is much easier to manage. Plan now to have a diverse balance of plants that will help keep next year’s garden easy to maintain, healthy and — an added bonus — beautiful!

Step One: Plant Lots of Flowers

Flowers attract pollinators. And many of those pollinators help control the cabbageworms, aphids, tomato hornworms, and other plant eaters that you’d prefer not to have in your garden. For example, common wasps are carnivores that feed on other insects. Parasitoid wasps, especially, make great garden allies!

Most herbs do double duty in the garden. Lemon balm, cilantro and dill provide flavorful leaves for your meals while also attracting parasitoids, such as tachinid flies and tiny wasps that lay eggs in various caterpillars.

Step Two: Mix it Up

Plant flowers in your vegetable beds, and vegetables in your flower beds and borders. Not only will this liven up your garden, it will encourage a diverse biological community: pollinators of many kinds, predator insects, spiders, seed eating birds and of course plant feeders such as aphids and caterpillars. If you tolerate some early plant damage, beneficial insects will usually come to the rescue. Marigolds are a time-honored vegetable companion; lettuce and sweet alyssum make a good pairing, as alyssum attracts syrphid fly larvae, which prey on aphids that are often found on lettuce; nasturtiums are tasty and beautiful, and can cover the ground between taller plants and shrubs.

Garden spiders like to weave their webs between tall plants such as pole beans or sunflowers; kale makes an attractive green accent in the flower garden; Swiss chard leaves are striking wherever they are planted.

Step Three: Remember that Predators Need to Eat

What this means is that you don’t necessarily want to reach for the spray, even if it’s organic, every time you see an aphid or caterpillar. Give the beetle, syrphid fly, and lacewing larvae a chance to find their prey insects. Allow the parasitoid wasps an opportunity to lay their eggs in tomato hornworms, cabbageworms, or other voracious caterpillars. The eggs will then pupate, giving rise to the next generation of the wasps which will, in turn, help keep future pests under control. (Home Garden Seed Association) 

Keep Bugs Away From Outdoor Living Spaces

Outdoor living spaces have become increasingly popular among homeowners in recent years. As the pandemic encouraged people to stay home, the desire for accessible, enjoyable outdoor spaces grew.

A 2020 study of Google trends data from the home decor retailer Living Spaces found that searches for items such as patio daybeds and small-space outdoor furniture grew by more than 200% between the early part of 2020 and the middle of the year.

If outdoor living spaces are in demand, so, too, are ways to make those spaces as comfortable as possible. There’s much homeowners can do to make the most of their outdoor spaces, but they might feel helpless against some unwanted, often relentless guests: insects.

Insects can turn relaxing days on the patio into wars of attrition with hungry bugs like mosquitoes. Thankfully, there are ways to fight back against insects while simultaneously adding a little aesthetic appeal to the backyard.

The Farmer’s Almanac notes that planting these insect-repelling plants around the patio or backyard can help homeowners successfully repel unwanted insects, including mosquitoes.

Lavender Lavender is a fragrant plant that adds a pop of purple and has been known to repel mosquitoes, fleas, flies, and moths.

Basil Basil can provide the best of both worlds, as it’s been found to repel flies and moths and also makes for a tasty addition to pasta sauces and other dishes.

Thyme Also a valuable ingredient to keep in the kitchen, thyme can help keep hungry mosquitoes at bay.

Mint The Farmer’s Almanac warns that it’s easy to overplant mint, so homeowners should only plant with care and make a concerted effort to prevent overgrowth. Mint has long been considered an effective mosquito repellant.

Alliums Like lavender, alliums can add a burst of purple to your patio. And though they aren’t believed to repel mosquitoes, alliums have been found to be helpful against cabbage worms, aphids, carrot flies, and slugs.

Chrysanthemums If ants are drawing homeowners’ ire, chrysanthemums may do the trick. These eye-catching flowers also are believed to repel fleas and roaches, among other insects. (MC) 

From Left: Sweet alyssum, Thai basil, and anise hyssop are beautiful in the garden and attract many pollinators. Syrphid flies (on the Sweet alyssum) are particularly useful as their larvae eat aphids.

Sleep Apnea is More Than Just an Annoying Snore

Snoring throughout the night. Gasping for air suddenly while sleeping. Feeling tired after a night of rest. These aren’t just signs of a poor night’s sleep - they could be symptoms of obstructive sleep apnea.

Sleep apnea is a serious sleep disorder characterized by a repetitive collapse of the airway during sleep. Most people with sleep apnea don’t even know they have it — in fact, 80% of people with sleep apnea in the United States are undiagnosed, according to research published in the “American Journal of Epidemiology.”

Experts from the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) recommend most adults get at least seven hours of sleep each night without waking frequently. If you have untreated sleep apnea, healthy, uninterrupted sleep can be hard to achieve.

When the airway collapses or becomes blocked while you sleep, it causes you to wake briefly — maybe with a snore or gasp for air — to unblock the airway.

Untreated sleep apnea can contribute to long-term health problems, including hypertension (high blood pressure), heart disease, stroke, Type 2 diabetes and depression.

Overall quality of life can also suffer. It can lead to a decline in mood, lower work productivity, difficulty concentrating and making decisions and an increased likelihood of getting into a traffic accident due to sleepiness.

The disorder may even affect your family and relationships; snoring or poor sleep due to sleep apnea can keep your family members up at night, affect your mood with others and impact your general decision-making.

Consider this additional information about sleep apnea from Count on Sleep, a collaborative awareness program led by the AASM.

Signs and symptoms of OSA:

• Snoring or noisy breathing

• Stopping breathing while asleep

• Waking up gasping or choking

• Restless sleep or waking up tired and groggy after a full night’s sleep

• Insomnia

• Waking up frequently to use the bathroom

• Having headaches in the morning

• Feeling sleepy or falling asleep during the day

• Having difficulty with memory or concentrating

• Mood changes or irritability

• Drowsy driving

Risk factors for OSA:

• Overweight or obesity (BMI of more than 30)

• High blood pressure

• Neck size of more than 17 inches for men; 16 inches for women

• Coronary artery disease (a type of heart disease) or heart attack

• Atrial fibrillation or other heart rhythm problems

• Congestive heart failure

• Type 2 diabetes

• Stroke

• Daytime sleepiness

If you think you may have undiagnosed sleep apnea, talk to your doctor about your signs, symptoms, risk factors and concerns. If friends or family members exhibit these symptoms, urge them to talk to a doctor.

Your doctor may screen or test you for sleep apnea, which could include an at-home sleep test or sleep study at an accredited sleep center. If diagnosed, treatment options include continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy, oral appliance, surgery or lifestyle changes.

Learn more about how sleep apnea affects health and take a short quiz to see if you may be at risk at counton sleep.org.

hen followed properly, sleep apnea treatment improves breathing, sleepiness and quality of life. Some people may find the disorder improves through lifestyle changes such as losing weight, sleeping on their side or quitting smoking or drinking alcohol. Most of the time, however, other treatment options are necessary, such as: CPAP

The most common and recognized treatment for sleep apnea, a CPAP machine provides a steady stream of air to keep your airway open throughout the night.

Oral appliance therapy

Similar to a mouthguard, an oral appliance can be worn at night to prevent the airway from collapsing by moving the jaw forward.

Surgery

If lifestyle changes, CPAP or oral appliance therapy don’t work, there are surgical options to treat sleep apnea. They include upper airway stimulation, which uses an implanted device to stimulate a nerve that controls the tongue, moving it forward while you sleep. (Family Features) 

Keeping Pets Healthy This National Pet Wellness Month

Astaggering 86.9 million U.S. homes share their lives with a beloved pet, according to MarketWatch. From playful personalities to curious instincts, pets enrich our lives by providing companionship, emotional support and a sense of security.

In honor of National Pet Wellness Month this October, Royal Canin, a division of Mars, Incorporated and leader in pet health nutrition, invites pet owners to explore essential tips to help keep their pets healthy and happy.

“National Pet Wellness Month is a crucial reminder that our pets’ health is in our hands,” said Dr. Todd East, DVM, veterinary affairs director, Royal Canin North America.

“As a veterinarian, I see how preventive care can dramatically improve and extend the lives of our pets. I encourage all pet owners to be proactive about their pets’ health to help them remain happy, active members of

your lives for years to come.”

Navigating all the online resources for pet care can feel overwhelming and it can be tough to know which is

best for your pets’ specific needs. To make that journey easier, try these simple yet effective tips so you can help your pet thrive:

healthy weight for your pet, which can reduce the risk of serious conditions associated with obesity.

• Hydration, hydration, hydration: Water is fundamental to your pet’s survival. It is essential for their everyday functions, and many body processes rely on water to work properly.

Always take your portable water bowl wherever you go and make sure clean and fresh water is available to your pet every day!

• Don’t forget grooming: Grooming your kitten or puppy is an important part of ownership, and if done gently and patiently, will help you build a bond with your pet. Frequent grooming allows you to recognize any changes to your pet’s body condition, protect them against fleas or ticks, and maintain healthy skin and coat.

• Make sure they are getting the right nutrients from their food based on their stage of life, breed and specific nutritional needs: From a German Shepherd to Yorkshire Terrier or French Bulldog to Labrador Retriever, every pet is unique, and so are their nutritional needs. That means each one requires a specific balance of nutrients to ensure they are maintaining a healthy lifestyle depending on their specific needs and stage of life.

• Enhance their overall health with social stimulation and play: In order for your pet to gain independence, it is important to socialize them at a young age. Both kittens and puppies benefit from socialization, as it teaches them how to react in various situations and enhance their brain development.

“I always make sure I am giving my dog, Max, the care he needs in return for all the love and support he provides me,” said Racquel White, vice president of corporate affairs, Royal Canin North America.

Consult your veterinarian for their recommendation on proper nutrition that’s specific to your pet, like Royal Canin’s tailored nutrition lines.

• Annual visits to the veterinarian are important: Taking your pet to the veterinarian is a great preventive measure to help them stay as healthy as possible. While going to the veterinarian may be a stressful experience for both pets and pet owners, it is essential to ensure no health issues go unnoticed.

• Exercise is key to staying happy and healthy: Let your pets get their energy out! Whether it’s taking them for a walk or letting them run around in the backyard, fresh air and movement can help maintain a

“In order to do so, I stay on top of his health to ensure he has what he needs to help him thrive. From the day I brought him home, I made sure he was eating the right foods with tailored nutrients for his unique needs. I also make annual veterinarian visits a priority, focus on preventive care, and never miss our daily walks outside to enjoy the sunshine. And of course, I make sure he gets plenty of playtime in. All these things are important for Max to be the best he can be, day in and day out.”

The latest devices are packed with pricey new features, like advanced AI capabilities, call transcription and displays large enough to be worthy of gaming and binge-watching. And while they’re also getting more durable, they’re not indestructible, according to new research.

For the past 13 years, Allstate Protection Plans has conducted a series of breakability tests to determine the strength of the latest and greatest devices. The mobile protection plan provider recently tested the new iPhone 16 Pro Max, which along with boasting a more contextual Siri, AI-driven writing tools and AI-powered image generation, has a display made of a ceramic-shield material that is said by Apple to be two times tougher than any smartphone glass.

Protecting Your ‘Durable’ Smartphones TECHNOLOGY Who Will They Be?

If you’ve sprung for this new model or are thinking of doing so, you may be wondering how durable it actually is and how to protect your investment.

Here to guide you are the results of Allstate Protection Plans Breakability Drop Test:

Front-down Drop Test

After one face-down drop on a sidewalk from 6 feet, the iPhone 16 Pro Max shattered across its display and suffered scuffing along its titanium frame.

Upon impact, the display went black, then flickered white for approximately two minutes, before finally going permanently black. This rendered the device unusable. How-

ever, it’s possible the device could be saved with repair. Apple.com lists iPhone 16 Pro Max front screen repair as $379 without AppleCare.

Back-down Drop Test

After one back-down drop on a sidewalk from 6 feet, the iPhone 16 Pro Max shattered across its rear panel and suffered damage to its raised glass camera housing.

The device remained fully functional, including all camera capabilities, which is an improvement over the iPhone 15 Pro Max. However, it was not safe to handle with bare hands due to raised and loose glass. Apple.com lists iPhone 16 Pro Max rear panel repair as $199 without AppleCare.

With the iPhone 16 Pro Max starting at $1,199 and repairs costing as much as $749 without AppleCare, Allstate Protection Plans highly recommends the use of phone cases and screen protectors. For added security, consumers are advised to get a mobile protection plan. For more information, visit AllstateProtectionPlans. com.

“As smartphones enter their AI era, they’re also entering a new era of durability,” said Jason Siciliano, vice president of marketing and global creative director at Allstate Protection Plans. “Nevertheless, Americans still spend billions of dollars on screen repairs every year, making it vital to continue taking steps to protect your device.” (SPT) 

Such a Selfless Gesture, Mr. President?

I have grown tired of listening to Democrats praising President Joe Biden for having the maturity, the grace, the humility, the patriotism, to step aside in his run for reelection “for the good of the country.” It was so big, so selfless of him. Yeah ... um ... right.

Have we all so quickly forgotten Biden’s own stubborn resistance to stepping aside even after his dismal performance at the debate?

I don’t know if it was the right bribe, the right threat, or a combination of both, but something either very good or very bad (for Biden) was dangled in front of him until he finally broke. THAT’s what really happened, because I very highly doubt Biden made this choice out of wisdom or the goodness of his heart. The same folks who were backing Biden and didn’t even want to think about Vice President Kamala Harris suddenly turned him into a “sacrificial lamb” and are literally worshiping her. How does one do that with a straight face? It’s downright psychiatric.

People are so naive, so gullible. And why do they want to believe this nonsense? Because the truth is unpalatable — that for Democrats, winning elections (and beating Donald Trump) is more important than “saving democracy.”

He Never Gives Up

In re: Thomas Oatway, letters, “Trump Behaving Disrespectfully,” Sept. 6.

First of all, Mr. Oatway, if you are going to quote people you should include a link to the supposed statement[s] you are attributing to them so the readers can see for themselves if they are being taken out of context or even falsely accused of saying something they never said.

And I would also point you to several of my previous submissions to The Signal where I very plainly state that I am not a fan of former President Donald J. Trump and that I merely voted “against” Hillary Rodham Clinton and Joseph Robinette Biden, not “for” Mr. Trump.

Unfortunately nowadays many of us are faced with voting for what we see as the lesser of two evils.

I, and others reading these pages, are very aware that your obvious bitter hatred for Donald Trump has a huge influence on your letters.

And in closing, sir, I fought and bled to defend this country and Constitution and to allow people I might even disagree with to freely voice their opinions, so please refrain from lumping all of us who served into a basket of your making.

Be Election Ready

With just over three weeks until the election in November, it’s time to talk about voting choices. No, I won’t be endorsing candidates, issues, or parties. What I will do is suggest some strategies for getting factual information and making wise choices before you send in your ballot or enter the voting booth.

We all have witnessed the common election barrage. The media has been churning out commercials, testimonials and endorsements meant to make our choices easy. They started out being informational, but recently have become intentional exaggerations and mean-spirited, usually groundless accusations. Just remember, choosing those who will serve our city, county, state and nation should never be easy. We should have to really think, study, reflect, and adjudicate what we learn about people before casting our vote for them, or for or against a measure or proposition.

Next came the ubiquitous campaign signs. I often wonder about the strategy here. Am I supposed to think a candidate is more worthy if his or her signs are plastered in groups of five? And I always wonder about the color choice. Do you suppose paid political operatives stay up nights arguing with candidates that red and blue beat green and yellow seven out of 10 times?

Are These Heroic Actions?

A candidate dropping out because he’s losing is about as “heroic” as a man changing his gender to win women’s sports. And both are celebrated by the same ilk.

Mail: Letters to the Editor, The Signal, 25060 Avenue Stanford, Suite 141, Santa Clarita, CA 91355. Anonymous letters are not published.

But all the above has been only slightly less annoying than the plague of unsolicited texts. You know, the ones where we’re supposed to think some nationally known figure happens to have the time to text me personally and ask me to save his or her campaign with a few dollars. Are we really that gullible?

I think the answer is “yes.” Here’s the problem. Professional politicos know most voters are lazy and want someone to tell them who to vote for.

They have learned we can be swayed by edgy commercials, a

flurry of yard signs, and celebrity endorsements. They are betting we’ll let them do our thinking for us, but you and I know our democratic system only works if we vote intelligently.

My advice: Don’t be someone's stooge. Don’t vote popularity or personality. Vote for those with the best policies and who are able to identify, explain and prove their ideas are both workable and beneficial.

So, here are a few suggestions:

1. Forget the commercials entirely. Refuse to be manipulated by scripted sound bites produced by professional filmmakers. Do you really think you’re getting the whole story?

2. Remember, the guy with the most signs is just the guy with the most signs. You’re not electing a marketing team; you’re selecting a person to represent your point of view.

3. Read all you can about candidate views and records. Most election headquarters offer position papers and other materials that will allow you to hear what the candidate really thinks.

4. Attend some “meet and greet” events. Meet the candidates faceto-face and have some well-worded questions ready for them to answer. Then, assess just how knowledgeable they are, how able they are to think and articulate their views, and whether or not they appear trustworthy.

5. Lastly, if you find a candidate worthy of your support, support them. The best candidates are often the least funded simply because they refuse to toe the party line.

The elections are coming, and they are very important. Don’t let someone else do your thinking for you. Think, study, discover and then vote. You’ll be glad you did, as will the rest of us.
