A LETTER FROM OUR PRESIDENT

After nearly two months of working from home, refocusing and self-improving together virtually as a team, Silver Creek brokers are back at the business of selling real estate with barely time to take a breath. Buyers are more excited than ever to own their piece of paradise in the Western North Carolina mountains. Our website has seen a record number of active users, and its daily traffic is unlike anything we've ever seen. As I write this letter, there are 678 homes and condos available; 164 are under contract, and 52 are pending transactions. In addition, 243 have already closed since the beginning of this year. These numbers clearly indicate a strong demand for real estate on the Plateau. They are exceptional for any year, but particularly for 2020, considering the numerous challenges we have faced. As a market leader and independent firm, we invest in marketing our clients’ properties locally and nationally. While some franchise firms have reduced their spending on marketing and technology, we have increased ours, and our platform continues to deliver results. Although the real estate industry seems busier than ever, there are still many community activities and events that we will dearly miss this year. As fireworks displays, theater seasons and charity events have been postponed or canceled, we have turned to our kitchens, backyards and workshops to find fulfillment. We pay homage to the handcrafted movement in this edition of NC Living Magazine. I hope this issue brings you joy and that you find your own piece of paradise wherever life takes you.

F O R T H I S F I R S T-T I M E V I S I T O R , T H E S E N S ORY ON S L A UG H T OF T H E I R I S H CULTURE WAS OVERWHELMING, until a day or two into the trip I had a revelation. Ireland, it seems to me, is a wonderfully noisy and entertaining place, embodied in the bogus Gaelic word “craic”, pronounced crack. Craic means fun, enjoyable conversation, a little gossip, and always amusement. “What's the craic?” someone might ask, and an enthusiastic response is “Craic is 90”, meaning it is an over-the-top moment. During a week-long visit, we experienced many of those “90 craic” moments, which often dovetailed visits to some of the world's best-known historic landmarks. Consider, for example, our first night on the Emerald Isle. We arrived at Shannon Airport and found our way to nearby Limerick. Within a few hours, we were whisked to Knappogue Castle for a medieval banquet which included robust song, dance, and lots of said craic. A generous sampling of mead, a heady fermented honey beverage, enhanced the atmosphere as a staff in medieval costumes served up salmon and root vegetables, more mead, roast chicken, soda bread, and, yes, more mead. The meal, during which I quickly became accustomed to being called “m'lady”, was followed by an extravagant music and dance performance. Harp music floated through the candlelit banquet hall, followed by the sounds of the Irish fiddle and the unmistakable loud taps of the traditional Irish dancers. The next morning found us outdoors on the rugged Cliffs of Moher, one of the most visited sites in the country. Hovering 700 feet

over the Atlantic Ocean, the cliffs provide a panoramic view of the Aran Islands, Galway Bay, and the Maum Turk Mountains. And, it's noisy! At peak season, more than 60,000 birds live on the cliffs, including Atlantic puffins, razorbills, guillemots, and the occasional peregrine falcon. Cliffs of Moher has been named a Special Protected Area because of its global importance in the conservation of large bird populations, as the constant cacophony of coos and peeps and birdcalls testifies. Later in the afternoon, we found ourselves at St. Tola's Goat Farm, immersed in the process of making goat cheese and captivated by the goats responsible. Hundreds were housed inside a large shed-like structure and clamored their way to the enclosing fence to greet us. But we quickly became yesterday's news when the farm manager, who is responsible for feeding them, entered. The moment he opened the door, the chorus of bleats filled the barn. Somehow, they know. Early the next morning, we climbed aboard an open-air jaunting car headed to Ross Castle and Killarney Estate. Our driver, who managed two very laid-back horses through morning rush traffic, apparently had hopes of breaking through in comedy. To the accompaniment of the horses' clop clop clop through the park, he shared special Irish insight. For example, he told us that Rory McIlroy always played golf in two pairs of socks, in case he got a hole in one. He also reported that,

TRAVEL perhaps thanks to St. Patrick, there are NO snakes in Ireland, save the two-legged ones in the nation's parliament. On to a sheep farm and a demonstration by two of the hardest working dogs in show biz who miraculously kept a herd of 100 or so sheep in line. Inside, the men who work this farm performed a jaw-dropping process of shearing the sheep, one by one. As each sheep was pulled to an elevated platform, showing little enthusiasm, a farmer would confidently hold it with one strong hand and shear it using the other. It's a stunning, fast procedure, and some of the best shearers can shear 200 sheep per day. The lamb has little to say about it but leaves the platform looking half its size, marked with a slash or two of red paint to identify its owner. The next stop was Blarney Castle and an opportunity to kiss the famed Blarney Stone. Kissing the Blarney Stone is supposed to guarantee the kisser the gift of eloquence, a highly rated quality in a land that has nurtured Oscar Wilde, James Joyce, and George Bernard Shaw, to name a few. The wind roared around the castle as we climbed an impossibly narrow staircase to see the stone at the top, all the while accompanied by the sounds of a kilted bagpiper who played his heart out from below. We spent the slow climb contemplating whether or not we might kiss a medieval stone, pondering the merits of sanitizer and whether or not germs were a fair trade for eloquence. Once outside and on top, we had our answer. The stone is actually a slab of limestone built into the battlements of Blarney Castle. It hangs over a precipitous opening...you can see the ground below! and the kisser must lean backwards and kiss the stone upside down. That wasn't happening for us, sanitizer or no sanitizer, so we watched enraptured as one by one the daring risked it all. A visit to the Cobh Heritage Centre, housed in an old Victorian railway station, is an immersion in the immigrant experience. Keep in mind that this museum is located in the second deepest port in the world and was the last stopping point of the

Titanic before it sunk. There are remarkable exhibits, many enhanced by sound that made me feel I was boarding a busy ship with hundreds of others seeking better lives. There is an ancestry registration center where visitors can trace relatives, and a poignant exhibit honoring Annie Moore, a young girl who was the first immigrant to pass through Ellis Island in the United States. But this is recent history compared to the next stop. Beautiful Glendalough (“valley between the trees”) is home to the archeologically important monastic site founded by Saint Kevin in the sixth century. Kevin was known as such a passionate ascetic that he allegedly drowned a woman who attempted to seduce him. Not surprisingly, the Irish can turn this grist into a drinking song: “In Glendalough, there lived an auld saint renowned for his learning and piety, his manners were curious and quaint, and he looked upon girls with asperity.” However, Kevin had his good points too. A lover of animals, Irish legend has it that a blackbird once nested in his hand and animals that came in contact with his garments would be blessed. Ladies, not so much. From Glendalough, the road to Dublin is a feast for the eyes, interrupted with quips from an entertaining tour guide. To wit: “What's the difference between God and (Dubliner) Bono? God doesn't think he's Bono.” Passing more than one Gaelic rugby field, he explained what made the particular form of the sport “Gaelic”: it's a combination of rugby, football, and civil war. Ah, Dublin. Our tour bus pulled into the city and our guide pointed out one architectural example after another, including the headquarters of the Bank of Ireland which has no windows. The reason, he explained, is that once inside, your money will never see the light of day. Blessedly, we were soon released with our passes for Dublin’s “Hop On, Hop Off” buses, which have

stops all over the city. A visitor can stop at some place of interest, visit it, and return to the stop to hop on again. One driver, on a particularly long stretch, had taken a page from our tour guide's playbook as he regaled us with yuk-yuk jokes and even rolled the window down to shout at a couple head-to-head on a bench under a tree. “Go ahead,” he called, “ask her.” They ignored him as he repeated himself more than once until finally, the woman looked up in feigned boredom to display her ringed fourth finger to him. The bus erupted in laughter. The bus route offered more intriguing stops than anyone could begin to enjoy in the limited time available, but one we wouldn't have missed was Trinity College. We caught a tour offered by present-day students, some of whom could also be Comedy Club candidates, who guided us through the ancient campus and its unparalleled library which houses the Book of Kells. Not far from Dublin is the famed Irish National Stud and Gardens where some of the world's premier stallions live. The cost of breeding can be astronomical during the mere five-month season and breeders from around the world send their mares here. The process is hardly random, according to our likable guide, who explained the courtship process which features one stallion whose only role is to encourage the mares to...how can it be said?....get in the mood. Called “Tommy the Teaser”, he is surely the ultimate wingman. The lodgings provided to these horses are five-star, including a Honeymoon Suite, and the offspring of the champion stallions can fetch millions of dollars. Of course, a trip to Ireland cannot be complete without a visit to a castle and our stay at Dromoland Castle was a traveler's grand finale. The last afternoon was schedule free and we spent hours walking the Castle's beautiful golf course and enjoying a glass of wine in an exquisite walled garden. Dinner was served in an elegant wood-paneled dining room accentuated by the soft strum of a harp. Our room was sumptuous, and we felt most pampered before we began the trek “across the pond” the next morning. Since returning, we have binge-read everything Ireland: Frank McCort's Angela's Ashes, the haunting Trinity by Leon Uris, even a random Maeve Binchy novel. The warm and rollicking spirit we brought home from our trip seems all the more extraordinary when we consider the harsh history its people have suffered. The “craic” of this resilient people is indeed 90. If you'd like to virtually tour Ireland, there are many ways to do so at www.virtualvisittours.com/?s=ireland.

Make your way to the BMW Performance Center in Spartanburg, South Carolina. They are still in operation with new guidelines in place, such as assigning everyone their own car during class. Your day begins with the basics by getting to know your instructor and the cars. Professional drivers provide insight into each of the BMW models. You quickly graduate to a course designed to challenge your skills where you learn how to properly maneuver the vehicles around obstacles. At the performance center, you are encouraged to test the brakes—stopping on a dime on a wet track— or open up the engine from 0 to 60 in under five seconds. The course not only tests the limits of the car, but it

will also test yours. This bucket list experience is a great one or two day escape from the Plateau. My favorite part of the day was the timed lap race in the M240i. Speed, cut corners, but don’t knock over the cones, all while trying to beat your friends’ times to earn bragging rights. If you apply your skills, you could win the best time of the day. I finished in 24.3 seconds, and I challenge you to beat it. The excitement and laughter alone are worth it. The fun of skidding around a circular wet track and nearly losing control of the car is a rip-roaring blast. When you understand the type of car you are driving, your insight into speed, braking, lane-changing, and taking fast corners bring your driving skills and entertainment to a whole

THE POWER OF THE PEN

Pens with a Purpose, Scaly Mountain

“A pen is a simple invention, really, used by millions of people. But words depend not on the pen itself, but on the person who holds it.” Hearing this statement for the first time at a Boy Scouts of America meeting for their son, Michelle and Darren Gillett were inspired to put their woodworking skills to use to make hand-turned wood pens. The family founded Pens with a Purpose (PWAP) in 2017 to donate a portion of every pen sale to the non-profit SERV International, which supports and funds local food banks particularly hard hit after natural disasters including this year’s pandemic COVID-19. For every pen sold, PWAP’s donation provides 25 meals to those in need, and since inception has supplied 132,400 meals worldwide. PWAP hosts two-hour workshops limited to 4 people following social distancing protocols. For more information or to purchase a pen, go to www.penswithapurpose.com.

FOREST THERAPY

DIY

by Kristin Bowen

30 SI LVER C R E E K R E AL E STATE G R O U P

When I first heard of forest bathing many years ago, I imagined finding a generously sized clawfoot tub brimming with hot water and bubbles awaiting me in a giant stand of gorgeous conifers. If I could find the right person to haul said tub deep into the forest for me, maybe only then could this daydream come true. Forest bathing is something much simpler and far less logistically challenging— it is an ancient Japanese art called Shinrin-yoku (literal translation: forest bath) that is becoming a popular Western practice for many as we look for answers during challenging times or to find some inner peace. Forest bathing helps bridge the gap between us and nature by awakening and deepening our connection with ourselves and the natural world. It does not involve any level of activity other than simply and consciously sitting quietly, maybe with your eyes closed, in the forest away from cars, phones, TV, and other distractions that cause sensory overload and wreak havoc on our ability to concentrate. Think of it as a “time out” to seek quiet time in the woods bathing our spirit in the aromatherapy, sounds, and rhythm of the forest. For those living in Western North Carolina, a place covered in na-

tional forests, it may be the most ideal and reasonably priced therapy available. Taking a forest bath, according to Time Magazine, rejuvenates us by restoring our mood, energy, sleep patterns, and clarity of mind. As your time spent forest bathing becomes more frequent, you might further discover another form of relaxation, forest-combing. Like beach-combing, combing the forest floor for discarded bits of nature that you might want to collect can be just as meditative. It is a collector’s paradise with things such as colorful leaves, fossils, quartz, mica bits, arrowheads, moss, flower petals, lichen wrapped branches or stones, artful pieces of wood, little plants, and bird feathers. Like a unique shell on the beach, you might find a woodsy piece that speaks to you and brings you joy and a sense of calm. In the beginning, it might feel like finding a needle in a haystack, but the more you practice, the more you become adept at seeing through the refuse. These natural collections can then be used to create an indoor living garden or organized and placed in a crystal or wooden bowl as a conversation piece, or artfully installed in a terrarium.

There's no better time to start your at-home yoga practice if you haven't already.

yoga now

by Kristin Bowen

Naked yoga? Yes, it’s true, it’s a thing. It is available in most major cities, aimed to help people overcome self-esteem and body image issues, just as yoga with animals such as kittens, horses, goats, and the newest animal craze, sloths, is considered therapeutic. But yoga comes in many forms, as do people. For class instruction, offered at varying venues from private studios to country clubs and from churches to public parks, different types of yoga are geared to people requiring different types of instruction. For instance, classes in Restorative or Yin Yoga are geared to people wanting to start slow, remediate their bodies gently, and recover from mind/body stress. Vinyasa Flow or Power Yoga appeals to those wanting a fast-paced mental and physical workout, while endurance and alignmentbased Hatha, Iyengar, or Bikram yoga appeal to active people interested in improving balance, spinal health, flexibility and/or recovering from injury. There are numerous branches of yoga creating class instruction of many kinds, almost as many as there are brands of cars. Coming to America in the 1800s, yoga eventually took off, taking California by storm in the 1960s. Since then, what started as a slow burn sweeping the country is ablaze today with over 36 million Americans practicing it. Let’s demystify the idea that yoga is about svelte limber bodies bending into a pretzel. Sure, the cover of some yoga magazines may depict this, but it is not always the case. Yoga practitioners (yogis) come in all shapes, sizes, colors, and ages. The truth is yoga is more than just a physical workout; its ultimate goal is to ease stress, or disease, and bring balance to the body and mind through breath and various stretching postures. It is a science and

a practice. And what comes from it is personal growth and rejuvenation. The start of any good yoga practice comes with intention, an intention to be better, grow, learn, and connect with yourself and others. There is no fast way to do yoga, no manual on how to perfect it. You get out of it what you put into it. Often what stops us from even trying it is intimidation. As a yoga teacher, I recognize first-time students and I see the fear of the unknown on their faces. Life’s first-time challenges like riding a bike or the first day of school or work, test us to hold ourselves together, put on a brave face, and step forward. The fear of embarrassment or failure also complicates matters. I love firsttime students though. I empathize with them because I remember my first day getting on a yoga mat with a group of unknowns 26 years ago. Suffering from neck and back injuries, as well as PTSD, I was so scared of what I could or could not do and how I might be judged. After this first class, my interest was piqued; however, I still wasn’t sure yoga was right for me. Someone encouraged me to try again with another type of class with a different instructor. So I asked around and found what sounded like a beginners’ class I would enjoy. With that one particular class taught by an incredibly caring teacher, my life was forever changed. I never felt so good. My mind felt clear for the first time in a long time and my body felt renewed. It germinated a power inside of me that I did not know I had and I knew I had to continue those classes. My life improved, I became a kinder person to myself and others, my injuries started to heal and I was clear about what I wanted to do with the rest of my life. I was so grateful I took a chance to step out of my comfort zone and to try

"There's such a tendency to push things down culturally, to smooth over painful feelings and focus on things that need doing, or other ways to fill the void, but I have found I'm much more at ease when I allow myself to feel whatever I'm feeling. Like anything living, all feelings arise, peak and subside if you let them… if possible, meet yourself where you are, and meet other people where they are, too. That's the real yoga practice." - ALLY HAMILTON, SANTA MONICA, CA YOGA TEACHER AND FOUNDER OF YOGISANONYMUS.COM

FACT Our bodies are primarily made up of water, but as we age, we continually lose moisture making our muscles and ligaments less elastic and unfortunately more brittle. To maintain or add hydration back into these elements, we must stretch, lengthen, and strengthen. Combined with deep breathing achieved through yoga, we can additionally improve blood circulation and flexibility and remove toxins from our bodies.

"Yoga is not a work-out; it is a work-in. And this is the point of spiritual practice, to make us teachable, to open up our hearts, and focus our awareness so that we can know what we already know and be who we already are."

What does this new decade mean to you? Will you make resolutions or a mental or physical list of the things you want to do or accomplish? Goals usually have something to do with feeling better, getting in physical shape, making more money, or advancing our careers. With consistent practice, yoga can help us achieve all that we desire plus improve our concentration and mental wellbeing by distilling the mind of distraction and syncing it with the body so that we can perform wholly through life. But what does our new pandemic sensitivity mean to the Plateau's fierce alignment to mountain casual style? Has the preponderance of Zoom gatherings permanently decimated our sense of fashion?

“Casual, but with a flair,” says one. “Black and white pants in every range of fabric...silk, linen, cotton,” says another. “Black pants, black top, then have fun with a scarf and a necklace,” is another common refrain, to the point that it seems as if black pants are to mountain fashion what plate armor was to medieval knighthood. Lifesaving.

Laura Rosenthal, who with her husband Mark owns Rosenthal's on Main Street in Highlands, has re-opened her doors with enthusiasm. If her recent traffic is any indication, women are as interested as ever in a dressier look, possibly because they have grown tired of elastic waistbands and bedroom slippers. Or, as one shopper was overheard declaring, “If I have to wear a mask, then I'm going to have a cute dress!” And another justified her enthusiastic shopping by noting that her American Express card had barely seen the light of day in months. Whatever the season, Laura contends that two great pairs of jeans, one in black and one in

Let's start with mountain casual. For the uninitiated, mountain casual is a considerable step up from one's favorite cut-offs and a great pair of hiking boots. The very phrase troubles first-time visitors, but not some local fashionistas who have watched the evolution of style over the last few years.

Now many of our favorite retailers would like to shake this up a bit, especially since we've been sitting indoors in our misshapen sweats for the past winter. And the longing to dress up is not just a local phenomenon. A recent article in the Wall Street Journal chronicled a widespread desire to shed the slippers and sweats and return to a more personally expressive wardrobe. The article cites ways in which fashion changed throughout history to counter difficult eras. When the rationing of silk and other fabrics ended with World War II, for example, women clamored to try Dior's “new look” with longer and generous skirts. It seems we too are anxious for some subtle changeups for our closets.

As this is written, our governor has just announced the state of North Carolina may operate under “Phase Two” guidelines of the Covid-19 recovery plan. Restaurants may serve at limited capacity, up to ten people may gather staying six feet apart, and, perhaps most importantly, many favorite clothing shops are open again, with certain precautions in place.

white, can take you anywhere when paired with flowing tops and fabulous heels. For those of us who secretly slide into Crocs the minute we're home, she suggests Ferragamos, known for their comfort and timelessness. Less expensive alternatives are the stylish variations on the sneaker, which are already flying off local shelves this season. She also notes that weddings remain the one occasion when women really dial it up a notch. With the availability of Old Edwards Inn and its Half-Mile Farm on the lake, she says that a typical summer weekend could see a staggering six weddings, leading to a demand for the serious cocktail dress. It's hard to know what summer 2020 will mean, but she has heard numerous comments among her clientele extolling any excuse to wear a dress again. Of course, the active country club scenes in both Highlands and Cashiers require at least a few dressier looks, even with social distancing caveats. And colors, like yummy sherbet shades of coral and lime, are showing up on local racks. Wendy King, the proprietor of Cashiers' The Look, believes that women want to be stylish but will not sacrifice comfort, pandemic or no pandemic. As a result, her store is full of skinny trousers with stretch, the newer wider leg pants, and even the hot-off-the-runway look of the “paper bag waistband” which cinches at the waist. She, too, sees a renewed interest in dresses, especially the long and flowing ones that spell ease and wearability. And jewelry is front and center among her offerings, including an array of multi-colored necklaces and earrings made from resin, as well as a “statement” line of carved water buffalo horn pieces, offered in three different finishes. Over in Highlands, the Mary Anne, whose shop Martha Anne's on the Hill offers up sportswear and shoes, says she finds women here a little more willing to “step out of the box”, never more so than this summer. A large table in the middle of the shop is loaded with some of the locals'

favorite shoes that bear testimony to her clients' love of comfortable fashion. Two favorite lines are the Portuguese manufacturer Cloud, which features sassy zippers, and Unity in Diversity footwear, which defines itself as “comfortably hip.” At Vivaci in Cashiers (a second Vivaci is located in Highlands), Lane Leddy says that mountain casual means everything goes. A dressy top will always work with pants and her clients love to collect timeless pieces that will take them from season to season. Jewelry can always be a look's game-changer and she acknowledges that the occasional interpretation of mountain casual includes serious diamonds. She says her clientele is getting younger, leading to greater sales of shorter dresses with good detail, which always pair well with a pretty wedge shoe. She notes that ruffles are plentiful, on skirts and accenting shoulders, making this season's fashion more feminine than ever. She shares that a number of her clients return to her year after year because they would prefer to shop here rather than in their other hometowns such as Atlanta or New Orleans. Like so many other local retailers she is stocking brands like White + Warren and Vince, making high fashion more accessible than ever at 3,400 feet. Interestingly, more than one retailer notes a greater demand for American manufacturers this year, indicating a patriotic spin on good old-fashioned retail therapy. And, if we're dressing up a little more, perhaps it's because the past few months in isolation have taught us to cherish the occasional celebration, even if we’re six feet apart. The mountain casual look, it seems, is as open to interpretation as ever.

He is also past Chairman of both the Highlands-Cashiers Hospital Foundation and The Village Green boards, and served on the boards of the Highlands-Cashiers Hospital and Fidelia Eckerd Living Center. Jochen and his wife, Adrienne, are members of The Country Club of Sapphire Valley and The Chattooga Club. ABOUT ME

BROKER | 828-508-2107

As a young boy growing up in Cary, North Carolina, Dan Allen fell in love with the Highlands-Cashiers Plateau over the course of many summertime visits. In 1994, he was able to realize his lifelong dream when he moved here and set down roots at a mountaintop farm near Cashiers. Dan quickly began building a solid reputation as a skilled real estate professional. His success is largely based on his innate understanding of what draws families to the Highlands-Cashiers Plateau, just as he was drawn here many years before. A major advocate for animals and the environment, Dan is deeply involved in his community, serving on the board of the Cashiers-Highlands Humane Society and supporting the Highlands-Cashiers Land Trust, American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, and the Nature Conservancy. Always seeking new ways to better himself in the industry he loves, Dan is also an active member of the Highlands-Cashiers Board of Realtors, North Carolina Board of Realtors, and National Association of Realtors. He is SFR-certified and has become well-versed in the intricacies of short sales, foreclosures, and REOs. Dan brings a fresh approach and genuine enthusiasm about our area to each new client he serves. His positive attitude, local knowledge, and proven dedication make him a terrific listing and buying partner. When Dan is not helping other families realize their dreams of living in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Western North Carolina, he spends much of his time off with his own family and friends. He can easily be found enjoying a relaxing day at the lake or volunteering. Dan is a respected member of the Plateau community and a welcome member of the Silver Creek Real Estate Group team.

"Dan is a great realtor as well as an upstanding member of the community. He works hard for his clients and gives back to the Cashiers with selfless volunteer work. He has a thorough knowledge of everything real estate, is a good listener and well as communicator. I found him to be personable and professional. Using Dan Allen as an agent is absolutely the best choice." - DENISA PALINKAS "My husband and I met Dan Allen and his assistant Kathryn over coffee at my son's home in Cashiers, NC, which Dan had sold to my son. The informal conversation provided our first glimpse of Dan as very knowledgeable about the area as well as thoroughly professional, while also personable and approachable. He learned from us just what we cherished about our cabin and property in a cove; in short, we are hikers, tubers, explorers, and flower, tree, and and bird observers. With this understanding, Dan showed and then sold our home to a couple who could envision the same hobbies for themselves. He and Kathryn expedited the sale in less than three months with excellent up-to-the-minute communication back and forth among all parties. Dan's professionalism throughout the process provided an optimism that was the order of the day." - KINTZ

Raised in the suburbs of Philadelphia with her five siblings, Bambi spent her childhood years as an outdoor, sports, and animal enthusiast. Creating family memories at their lake home in the Poconos left an indelible impression on Bambi. Fulfilling a lifelong dream of returning to the mountains, destiny led Bambi and her husband Jeff to the Highlands-Cashiers Plateau where they own a log cabin on tranquil Lake Glenville, as well as a contemporary home in Sapphire. Complementing her nurturing personality, Bambi pursued a nursing degree at Villanova University. Upon accomplishing extensive clinical and nursing management expertise in the Tri-State area, Bambi was recruited to the pharmaceutical industry. She relocated her family to Sarasota, Florida, where she excelled as an executive sales consultant with both Merck and Novartis. Inspired by several family members in real estate, Bambi obtained and has held her Florida license with one of the Leading Real Estate Companies of the World since 2007. Drawing from over a decade of experience in real estate, coupled with longstanding pharmaceutical sales, Bambi has built a reputation for her enthusiasm, integrity, and caring nature which is an asset for matching client’s desires. It’s no surprise that she promptly became a reputable owner and property manager of luxury rentals in Sarasota. Bambi is a dedicated community member who fosters philanthropic endeavors. She established a 501(c)3 scholarship and mentoring program for high school students in Florida. Her genuine love for children and young adults continues to shine on the Plateau, where she’s an active volunteer with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Western North Carolina (WNC), The Boys and Girls Club of the Plateau, and Girls on the Run of WNC. Having lived in Pennsylvania, Florida, and now North Carolina, Bambi understands the experience of buying and selling homes and the benefits of mountain living. So, when not fulfilling the dreams of her clients, you’ll find Bambi in her outrigger canoe or with Jeff and their two Portuguese Water Dogs (Marina and Tiago) kayaking, dock-diving, boating, fishing, hiking, or entertaining family and friends. young boy led to a genuine appreciation for the miles of hiking trails, gentle lakes, and towering waterfalls, all of which add to the allure of the Plateau landscape. After graduating from college, Kevin struck out for the open plains of the West where he spent the next six and a half years developing and managing multiple companies in the oil and gas industry in North Dakota. After enduring numerous long winters, the allure of his boyhood summer home proved too strong and, after marrying his wife Lindsey in June of 2019, they moved permanently to the Highlands-Cashiers area. Once settled in their new home, Kevin obtained his North Carolina real estate license with the goal of sharing his love of Plateau-style living. When not advocating for the lifestyle, Kevin is an avid outdoorsman and can be found hiking with his beautiful wife, fishing, kayaking, playing a round of golf, or simply sitting on the back deck admiring the views.

Why did you choose Silver Creek Real Estate Group? Silver Creek is one of the premier real estate companies in the Highlands-Cashiers, and greater Western Carolina, region. Their unparalleled service, attention to detail, and viral marketing campaigns, both digitally and in print, were the key factors among many others as to why I chose to join Silver Creek Real Estate Group. These tools and the combined collective years of experience of Silver Creek’s team members provide me the resources to help my clients, whether they be first time home buyers or seasoned veterans looking for an investment property. What is your favorite season on the Plateau? Although every season on the Plateau provides opportunities for enjoyment to both residents and visitors, the simple majestic beauty of our area is unmatched during fall. Autumn on the Highlands-Cashiers Plateau produces spectacular vistas of red, yellow, and orange mountains backdropped by piercing blue skies. Although the days begin to shorten, crisp mornings are enjoyed with warm drinks in hand before enjoying the variety of activities available in the area under the warmth of an afternoon sun. But best of all are the relaxing moments surrounded by family and friends next to a fire on cool evenings.

EDDY MCDONALD.

ABOUT ME

BROKER | 828-421-8196

Eddy McDonald's lifelong passion and talent for golf led him to a career as a PGA professional. After relocating from Destin, Florida for a position at Highlands Falls Country Club in 1995, Eddy fell in love with the Highlands-Cashiers Plateau and knew he'd found home. Looking to follow his interest in development, Eddy embarked on his real estate career at Highlands Cove (now Old Edwards Club at Highlands Cove), where he spent 13 years helping to grow Highlands Cove from its first home to the community it is today. Eddy's knowledge of the area and passion for building relationships with his buyers and sellers have been major factors in his success. He believes in going above and beyond to assist his real estate clients, providing them with a superior level of service and the resources to make informed decisions. Eddy enjoys spending time with his young daughter, Sara. They can be found on the golf course, hiking trails, or simply out exploring the natural beauty of the Highlands-Cashiers area.

“...Eddy is a fabulous realtor. He has been responsible for our rental home for the last year and has increased our rentals by 200%! He knows marketing and internet advertising. He is always available and responsive to our needs and those of the renters. He has what it takes to make an excellent agent - friendly and smart, a strong work ethic, and salesmanship.” - JOE AND MARY S.

“Eddy is a busy professional, yet he was always extremely responsive in person, phone, or text, making the process of buying this home from another state seamless. Without a doubt, we found and purchased our home in Cashiers because Eddy was our broker. Both before and after the closing Eddy has gone far beyond what was actually required. Thank you, Eddy McDonald, for being such a great person, professional, and realtor!” - J.S.

"We had the extreme pleasure of working with Eddy in the recent purchase of our home in Cashiers. Eddy quickly sensed what we were looking for and arranged a nice variety of homes for us to see. Even after the sale was done, Eddy has graciously continued helping us , including suggesting contractors for some renovations and coordinating their comings and goings from our new home. Village Realty in 2000. She has extensive knowledge of marketing, technology, and the greater Sapphire and Cashiers market and has earned a reputation among agents as someone who is hardworking and extremely competent. Her sense of responsibility to her clients and attention to detail make her an asset to anyone looking to buy or sell property in the area. Cassie is an active member of the Highlands-Cashiers Board of Realtors and currently serves as a director on the MLS Board. She has also served on the Technology Committee in the past. Her National Association of Realtors Short Sales and Foreclosure Resource Certification has proven to be beneficial in the many short-sale, foreclosure, and REO transactions she has closed over the years. When Cassie isn’t working with clients, she is spending time with her family. She also enjoys camping, tennis, boating, dining out with friends, and of course, shopping! Her down-to-earth personality, perseverance and willingness to go the extra mile make her a great addition to Silver Creek Real Estate Group.

"Cassie was great for us. After seeing three properties, my wife and I totally flip-flopped on what we wanted to see. She didn’t miss a beat, and we found our house an hour later. She facilitated negotiations and closing from three different locations flawlessly. We really liked her." - WILLIAM WARD AND ROBIN ALLEN

"To anyone buying or, in particular, selling a home in the Sapphire Valley area, you will not find a broker that will work harder for you. We had our home on and off the market a couple of times over the past two years and experienced minimal activity. With Cassie things really began to click. Due to her marketing efforts showings increased dramatically. Homes only sell when they’re shown to enough potential buyers. She does the little things that make her successful and gets you as a seller results. For example, with cooler weather approaching and us away, we winterize the home. Cassie would take the time to go by ahead of showings, turn on the water and hot water heater, adjust the home temperature to a comfortable level and make sure all was in good order, and then put all back as we left it. She went over and above our expectations based on prior experience. Can’t say enough about her professionalism, courtesy, integrity and work ethic ... a real pro and a joy to work with." - GAIL AND ROD BRAZZELL 6 2 S I LVER C R E E K R E AL E STATE G R OU P

where he wanted to be. The desire for the mountain lifestyle led him to search for property in the area for several years until he found the perfect piece of land for the home of their dreams. The home was intended to be their second residence until Chuck's retirement. But the lure of the Blue Ridge Mountains soon prompted the Selfs to realize that it was time to say goodbye to the intense pace, traffic and heat of Atlanta, and after the construction of their new home was completed, Chuck and Ann settled in permanently to enjoy the simplicity and splendor of mountain living. Prior to selling real estate, Chuck enjoyed a successful sales career in the television and entertainment industry, working most recently as Vice President of Sales for both Raycom Sports in Charlotte and Warner Brothers Television in Atlanta. Spending a moment with Chuck reveals his passion for everything this area has to offer. He finds tremendous satisfaction in matching his clients with their dream mountain home or home site. Chuck also enjoys golf, tennis, hiking, biking, boating on Lake Glenville, and any other reason he can think of to be outdoors. Even the dark night beckons him outside to gaze at the beautiful star-filled sky, bringing back cherished childhood memories so easily forgotten while living in the big city. Chuck is an active member of the Cashiers-Highlands community, having served in board positions with the Cashiers-Highlands Humane Society, Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Cashiers, and the Highlands-Cashiers Board of Realtors. Chuck is currently serving on the board of the Blue Ridge School Education Foundation. Chuck and his wife are active members of Mountaintop Golf and Lake Club. Chuck’s wife, Ann, is a United Methodist Minister and also serves as the Executive Director of The Village Green in Cashiers—the 13.2-acre park at the center of town. Chuck and Ann look forward to their visits to the mountains from their daughter who lives in Atlanta, and their son, daughter-in-law, and two grandsons who reside in Nashville.

“If you want a professional real estate agent to get the job done, list with Chuck Self. His integrity and level of work ethic are beyond any expectation you may have. Our experience with Chuck proved to be easy and pain-free. He sold our house DAYS after we listed with him. After interviewing other agents, we chose Chuck because we felt like he would work hard to get our property sold ... he did just that and also became a dear friend in the process. RAY TRINE.

ABOUT ME

BROKER | 828-506-8520

Ray’s passion for all things real estate blossomed early in his life. After graduating with an accounting degree from the University of North Florida in 1971, his real estate career was launched immediately. Initially employed by Florida National Bank’s holding company, he later became CFO of American Federal Savings and Loan, financing homes and commercial properties and working on building and development projects. He quickly learned that he belonged out in the field making things happen, rather than crunching numbers in an office. By 1982, the Trine family included five children, five dogs and four cats. His quest for a better quality of life brought him to the Highlands-Cashiers Plateau, where he immediately recognized what an idyllic existence it would provide. He packed up his entire menagerie and moved from an oceanfront home in Atlantic Beach, FL to his newly acquired farm in Glenville, NC. His family continued to grow, expanding to include llamas, donkeys, cows, goats, sheep, turkeys and chickens. Now with seven children and thirteen grandchildren, he knows he made the right choice! Once ensconced in North Carolina, Ray wasted no time earning his North Carolina Broker’s license. He went to work for one of the oldest real estate firms in the area, V.C. Smith Real Estate, which he bought outright two years later. He soon made his mark as the number one real estate office in sales and listings in the Cashiers area for many years running. Ray proceeded to shape the area with his active involvement in the sale of land tracts, as well as the development of many residential communities such as Bald Rock, Summerhill, Glenshore, Trillium, Bear Lake Preserve, Bridge Creek, Glen Laurel, and Glen Pointe. With such a large family, community involvement was also important to Ray. He has been President of the Blue Ridge School PTA, elected to the Jackson County School Board, and served on the Cashiers Chamber of Commerce, Friends of Lake Glenville and many private community boards and architectural review committees. Coupled with his dedicated community involvement, Ray’s background of accounting, property development, and real estate sales has provided him with priceless insights into this unique area. Ray is the quintessential guide to the Highlands-Cashiers Plateau, offering personal experience, countless fascinating local narratives and a seemingly limitless knowledge of mountain living. Ray is a seasoned professional who brings enthusiasm, vision and over 45 years of experience to the team at Silver Creek Real Estate Group. Ray is licensed in both North Carolina and South Carolina.

“My wife and I have moved many times in the last 30 years and dealt with a lot of agents. We have now dealt with Ray on many transactions and believe strongly that he is by far the best. His integrity, professionalism, and knowledge of the mountain market are unparalleled. We are glad we found him and more so appreciate his warm smile and good nature. He is the very best.
