THE NE ERA Words by Kristin Bowen Illustrations by Holly Molly

The illustrious High Hampton tells a story–

one about the tradition of families, friends, and couples for generations annually escaping to the Blue Ridge Mountain retreat for relaxation, cool temperatures, outdoor adventure, and lasting memories. If the walls could talk you might hear the tales of socialites, senators, movie stars, and the wealthy families who have vacationed here for almost a century. However, the real story is told among the nostalgic recollections of guests describing their children catching their first fish, horseback riding through lush green forests, stealing kisses in the dahlia garden, toasting marshmallows over a campfire, or dancing all night under the stars. Dreamy is the word to best describe the scene of this magical destination “where time slows and people stop to reconnect.” Having operated as a rustic mountain inn for 96 years, it is now turning the page with a new name, owners, management, and an impressive re-imagination plan to restore and redevelop the 1400-acre property for the generations to come. “We knew we wanted to be a part of a project that would give families a place to slow down and spend more time

together. High Hampton does just that,” says Ken Polk, CEO of Arlington Family Offices. “It was important for us to partner with friends that had that same focus on family, and who were committed to the property, its guests, and the land for generations to come.” High Hampton’s new owners, Daniel Communities along with Arlington Family Offices, have been successfully redeveloping properties for decades. They have smartly partnered with the team from Blackberry Farm to reimagine the old Inn into a luxe destination property. “I first visited High Hampton in 1982…” says Sandy Beall, Chairman and co-founder of Blackberry Farm and Blackberry Mountain in Walland, Tennessee. “The property has held my family’s interest for nearly four decades. Arlington’s long-term, multi-generational approach parallels that of the Beall Family and Blackberry Farm and we are proud to work with friends that have common goals and sensibilities to create something truly special.” Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the re-imagination team is working closely with the North Carolina

State Historic Preservation Office to renovate the original buildings while building additional resort amenities to enhance the High Hampton experience, including enlarging guest rooms and adding HVAC units for all accommodations. “High Hampton has provided countless families with years of idyllic, cherished memories. When restoring the property, our intention was to respect the craftsmanship and classic materials,” says Samantha Feuer, Senior Interior Designer at Blackberry Design. “We worked closely with the National Register of Historic Places to ensure that the iconic elements, such as uniquely shaped doors, handcrafted furniture, original exterior shag bark siding and interior American chestnut walls are preserved, with reimagined comforts that will welcome future generations.” The project includes an extensive redesign and refurbishment of the golf course under the direction of Tom Fazio and his team. The family-friendly course will offer over 7,000 yards of play from the back tees and fairways that overlook babbling streams, all against the jaw-dropping backdrop of Rock and Chimney Top Mountains.

Along with the restoration of the historic inn and lodging accommodations, also added will be a new resort and club amenities such as a fieldhouse operating as a golf clubhouse and restaurant, boathouse, and pool. The resort announced last year that aside from a golf course remodel, there will be a new driving range and short-game practice facility. The restaurant will offer ample yet intimate indoor and outdoor gathering spaces with dramatic views. A pool complex, lakefront beach recreation area, and fitness center will be added to the club member and resort guest amenities. Family recreation activities will also be enhanced through the development of new tennis and pickleball courts, a croquet lawn, and dedicated space

for additional games and activities. A favorite pastime activity with guests is simply lounging in the famous Adirondack red rocking chairs with a cocktail in hand to watch the sunset drop behind Rock Mountain. The activities menu will still propose hiking, fishing, boating, swimming, arts and crafts, a kids program, and llama treks. The accommodations include 18 Inn rooms, 40 cottage rooms, and three cottages. Room rates start at $385 per night and include breakfast and dinner, along with Club amenity access. Foreseeing it will still be a favorite spot for family reunions, celebrations, events, and

destination weddings, the new High Hampton plans to elevate the bar in the luxury resort market. Given the planned attention to detail of the aesthetics, amenities, dining, service, and accommodations, it will no doubt be an award-winning luxury destination drawing people far and wide wanting to share the experience. The idyllic mountain hamlet of Cashiers will reap greater renown, additional jobs, and more residents and revenue. Reopening with a fresh face in the spring of 2021, this resort’s re-imagination project is a dream come true for many who not only love and respect its rich history but the space, the land, and a keen sense of timeless tradition. •

HOLI DAYS

There is no turning our backs on this upcoming holiday season. This one, more than ever, is a time to share, reflect, give, and find joy. 2 6 SI LVER C R E E K R E AL E STATE G R OU P

Our beloved festive events, social gatherings, and travel plans will not quite be the same. As resilient Americans it is up to us to brush away the blues and create new seasonal traditions that make our hearts warm, our bellies full, and our season glow brightly. Embracing what’s important will be key to celebrating the season to include family, friends, neighbors, and community—rejoicing about what’s good in our lives. Sarah Spoljaric, a writer for The Good Trade, a thought-provoking lifestyle e-magazine, suggests keeping the season bright by planning new holiday customs well ahead so you have something to look forward to. She goes on to say, “Whether it be community-based or personal traditions, bringing little or big ones into your life can sprinkle your holiday season with a sense of purpose and fun.” In a time when making personal connections takes thought and planning, establishing new rituals becomes essential, such as that weekly family Zoom chat or socially distanced cocktails with friends, to nourish our soul and make us feel human. “Rituals give our lives shape and meaning,” says Casper ter Kuile, a fellow at

the Harvard Divinity School and author of The Power of Ritual. In collaboration with, and available at, Holstee.com, ter Kuile created a 20-page guidebook, The Ritual Life Planner, to assist in identifying, organizing, and planning monthly and annual rituals. This holiday season is the perfect time to start new uplifting traditions to enjoy throughout the years ahead.

something new. Adopt a new hobby such as baking, oil painting, yoga, writing that book you’ve always wanted to write, learning a new language, or building something with your hands. Is that funny 1,000-piece puzzle of bears playing poker staring you down? It’s time to tackle it. You can even make it a group activity. On a clear night, there is a sky full of diamonds, glitter, and wonder just outside the door. Wish upon a star, watch for shooting stars, or learn the winter constellations.

Simply Dialing It Down Daily Daily rituals help us reset our physical and emotional temperament and promote well-being. An easy or vigorous walk in the woods rain or shine can be a calming and grounding ritual to relish in every morning. Engage your creative spirit by learning

consider donating the sweaters or saving them until next year. Add a White Elephant Gift Exchange where gag gifts are wrapped and distributed (participants pick a number), followed by steals, swaps, and laughter. The age-old tradition held by the Brits enlivens a gathering by passing around Christmas crackers, those weird rolled “popping” colorful cylinders. Guests will delight in this festive tradition especially if you get the themed ones found at merimeri.com. Inside each cracker, you’ll find a funny hat, a toy prize, and a joke. Hats MUST be worn throughout the night. The Three F’s Three things that dominate most people’s Thanksgivings are family or friends, food, and football— this is a tried and true ritual that should not be compromised. Family or friends in safe groups can still break bread together. An outdoor turkey fry is always fun and delicious. We love Alton Brown’s Deep Fried Turkey recipe available at foodnetwork.com. Despite the lack of fans in the stands, NFL football is still finding its way into sports enthusiasts’ homes. Fortunately, there are three planned games on Turkey

Day to keep the tradition alive. Find Snuggles Practice hygge (pronounced hue-guh), a Danish tradition and philosophy where people get cozy in pajamas, light a fire, snuggle under blankets, sip hot chocolate, and above all, experience and feel love, life, and contentment in “the Now”. Baking with Love There is nothing like the smell of fresh baked goods to titillate the senses and bring happiness to a household. Gather the family around and indulge in the making of a cookie tree. What’s a cookie tree you ask? Well, it is a small tree of cookies, of course! Do a search on Pinterest for a bevy of recipes and idea sparks. The Simple Act of Giving The truth is that you reap what you sow. Giving just happens to be one direct way to warm not only your own heart and soul but those of others too. Thanking your first responders with a simple, yet thoughtful gift like a homemade card expressing your gratitude, food made with love, or a gift card to a local restaurant is one sure way to generate good karma. Singing chorales at Christmas is also a wonderful way to make people feel appreciated. Giving to those who have struggled through these tough times will also reap huge rewards. A Gratitude Bowl When challenging times call for hope and

contemplation, setting up a gratitude bowl on a prominent table in the house can uplift the spirit. The simple ritual of stopping by the bowl daily to drop in a little note expressing your gratitude for something or someone, and then making time to read the notes aloud at the end of the week feeds the soul. Get the whole family involved. Throw a Teeny Tiny Cocktail Party Go to your closet and pull out that Little Black Dress and handsome suit, the ones you were storing until a virus-free time, and get gussied up for a memorable evening of fun. Play your favorite holiday movie on TV or put some upbeat holiday records on, light a fire, pop some bubbly, sup on some oysters (or something else just as fine), and embrace the moment. Feel alive in your own cozy environment by dancing, laughing, singing, and hugging your “safe” friends and family.

stress, embrace a team effort, and create new memories. The more cooks in the kitchen the merrier! Set Up an Amaro Bar and Do a Tasting with Friends Amari, the plural for Amaro meaning bitter in Italian, is not something new on the market; the bittersweet liqueur is quite old, originating from Italy centuries ago. They are made from the maceration of herbs, flowers, roots, bark, and citrus peels, and alcohol, then aged in casks. Seen on cocktail menus in popular recipes such as Negroni, Campari and Soda, and Aperol Spritz, Amari now hail from around the world. Simply sipped neat on its own after dinner as a “digestivo” or added to your favorite pre-dinner cocktail, amaro, and there are hundreds of different ones to try, has its taste profile making it a fun libation to explore. A tasting among friends can be quite an entertaining and memorable experience. Gift THE Gift

Less Is More Leaving all of the planning, prep, and cooking to one or two people is a lot of work— especially during the holidays. Therefore, bring all of your dinner guests into the fold ahead of time to plan, prep, and cook together. Sharing time, laughter, and merriment is the reason for coming together in the first place, so whipping up some easy recipes together will relieve

It only takes one special gift to make someone smile. Instead of showering your family with gifts, embrace the change that 2020 has brought by simplifying your life. Give one gift, whether it’s homemade or store-bought, that brings meaning and joy. Be thoughtful and curious about what is really needed or desired.

Thanks giving, MOUNTAIN STYLE By Melissa Reed

Thanksgiving on the Plateau is becoming a holiday tradition as more and more people are discovering the pleasures of food, family, and football at 3,500 feet. For others, it is the weekend that officially signals the end of the summer and fall seasons and an obvious time to fill the house or cabin with loved ones. It provides the warmth of a family gathering without all the stress that often comes with Christmas. But for those of us who see nothing stress-free in preparing a delectable feast, there are ways to ease the burden. More and more local businesses stand ready to streamline the holiday with an array of delicious offerings that seem homemade but require little effort. Robin Crawford, for example, the wellknown proprietor of the Cashiers Farmer’s Market, will be offering everything from all-natural turkeys you prepare at home to multi-course à la carte meals you build from her considerable list of sides. Typically, she says, she offers meals to serve four to six people and a customer may pick up a fully cooked smoked turkey along with any number of sides, including a squash casserole, green beans, and “pilgrim mashed potatoes,” a recipe similar to twice-baked potatoes without the skin but with lots of butter. She can even provide 4 6 SI LVER C R E E K R E AL E STATE G R O U P

the homemade gravy. All the traditional pies will be available, of course! While Thanksgiving marks the end of the season for the Farmer’s Market, they will stock garlands and greenery to usher in the Christmas holidays. Some people, she says, will put a fall-colored bow on a green wreath and just change the ribbon to green or red as Christmas nears. She also carries a fun selection of yard decorations—turkeys and pumpkins mounted on wire to be stuck in the ground—and can provide simple centerpieces made from straw. In Highlands, the Mountain Fresh Grocery at the bottom of Main Street offers a complete traditional dinner for six people, the centerpiece being a butter-basted turkey or honey glazed ham cooked Thanksgiving morning. The meal includes dressing, traditional green bean casserole, cranberry relish, Yukon gold mashed potatoes, turkey herb gravy, and homemade yeast rolls. For dessert, the market offers Granny Smith apple, pumpkin or pecan pie. A welcome addition to Thanksgiving take-out this year is Sapphire Valley’s Library Restaurant and Bar. Executive Chef Johannes Klapdohr anticipates a traditional menu with a Southern accent or two, such as collard greens and macaroni and cheese. Orders may be picked up on Thanksgiving morning and will serve six people. Ingles is another helpful source, offering a fully-cooked turkey or ham dinner for the holidays. A variety

of side dishes are available, including homestyle gravy, sweet potato casserole, broccoli and rice casserole, and Amish-style cole slaw. If you fall somewhere in between doing dinner from scratch and carrying it home ready-made, the Plateau offers lots of help. The Spice and Tea Exchange in Highlands is stocking a wonderful assortment of seasonings to dial your cooking up a notch. Consider, for example, a turkey or ham herb rub. Manager Adison Harris also recommends a baker’s spice blend, a pumpkin pie spice blend, and an autumn harvest blend which intensify the flavors of fruit breads, soups, squash, and sweet potatoes. Another idea she suggests for a home celebration is a mulling mix spice blend that is delicious with apple juice or red wine. Fresser’s in Highlands will have “everything from soup to nuts,” according to chef Debbie Grossman. Pick up an order of roasted butternut squash and chestnut bisque or a casserole of bourbon sweet potatoes, made, she assures, with excellent bourbon. She can help with desserts, offering all the usual suspects, as

well as bread pudding and chocolate pecan pie. Save even more room for dessert, because the choices are staggering. Most all the sources listed above will have traditional pies available. Additionally, Sugar Cloud Baking Company in Cashiers offers even more choices, such as rhubarb, Derby, and "fig and honey" pies. Another sublime source for homemade pie is Appalachian Harvest on Main Street in Highlands, where Kimberly Baldwin already has orders for more than thirty. The pies, which are so heavy they require two hands to hold, are legendary for their organic and generous fruity fillings. Her jarred marmalades, fillings and jellies, which are also sold in Williams Sonoma and Whole Foods Market, include several which are perfect for Thanksgiving. She makes a rich cranberry relish and also recommends a homemade holiday pepper jelly, made from pecans and cranberry. Of course, there is always the option of dining out, and the choices are enticing. Madison’s, at Old Edwards Inn in Highlands, will be offering a full-service dinner, as will Wolfgang’s, also in Highlands. On the Veranda, not to be outdone, will be serving an extensive buffet from noon to 6:00 p.m., featuring a “cold table” laden with shrimp and salads and a hot buffet serving the traditional turkey as well as “turducken,” made of boneless turkey, duck, and chicken held together with stuffing. An elaborate dessert bar will finish off the experience, including traditional pie as well as an assortment of cookies. And so, like those Pilgrims hundreds of years ago, we gather together for what can only be called a magnificent mountain feast.

As a young boy growing up in Cary, North Carolina, Dan Allen fell in love with the Highlands-Cashiers Plateau over the course of many summertime visits. In 1994, he was able to realize his lifelong dream when he moved here and set down roots at a mountaintop farm near Cashiers. Dan quickly began building a solid reputation as a skilled real estate professional. His success is largely based on his innate understanding of what draws families to the Highlands-Cashiers Plateau, just as he was drawn here many years before. A major advocate for animals and the environment, Dan is deeply involved in his community, serving on the board of the Cashiers-Highlands Humane Society and supporting the Highlands-Cashiers Land Trust, American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, and the Nature Conservancy. Always seeking new ways to better himself in the industry he loves, Dan is also an active member of the Highlands-Cashiers Board of Realtors, North Carolina Board of Realtors, and National Association of Realtors. He is SFR-certified and has become well-versed in the intricacies of short sales, foreclosures, and REOs. Dan brings a fresh approach and genuine enthusiasm about our area to each new client he serves. His positive attitude, local knowledge, and proven dedication make him a terrific listing and buying partner. When Dan is not helping other families realize their dreams of living in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Western North Carolina, he spends much of his time off with his own family and friends. He can easily be found enjoying a relaxing day at the lake or volunteering. Dan is a respected member of the Plateau community and a welcome member of the Silver Creek Real Estate Group team.

"Dan is a great realtor as well as an upstanding member of the community. He works hard for his clients and gives back to the Cashiers with selfless volunteer work. He has a thorough knowledge of everything real estate, is a good listener and well as communicator. I found him to be personable and professional. Using Dan Allen as an agent is absolutely the best choice." - DENISA PALINKAS "My husband and I met Dan Allen and his assistant Kathryn over coffee at my son's home in Cashiers, NC, which Dan had sold to my son. The informal conversation provided our first glimpse of Dan as very knowledgeable about the area as well as thoroughly professional, while also personable and approachable. He learned from us just what we cherished about our cabin and property in a cove; in short, we are hikers, tubers, explorers, and flower, tree, and and bird observers. With this understanding, Dan showed and then sold our home to a couple who could envision the same hobbies for themselves. He and Kathryn expedited the sale in less than three months with excellent up-to-the-minute communication back and forth among all parties. Dan's professionalism throughout the process provided an optimism that was the order of the day." - KINTZ

“If you want a professional real estate agent to get the job done, list with Chuck Self. His integrity and level of work ethic are beyond any expectation you may have. Our experience with Chuck proved to be easy and pain-free. He sold our house DAYS after we listed with him. After interviewing other agents, we chose Chuck because we felt like he would work hard to get our property sold ... he did just that and also became a dear friend in the process. If we purchase another property in the Cashiers area, it will be with Chuck as our agent as we feel very comfortable with him at the helm. He will surpass all of your expectations as he is a man of character, wisdom and simply someone you will enjoy being with.” - ROBBIE AND KAREN 5 8 S I LVER C R E E K R E AL E STATE G R OU P

RAY TRINE.

ABOUT ME

BROKER | 828-506-8520

Ray’s passion for all things real estate blossomed early in his life. After graduating with an accounting degree from the University of North Florida in 1971, his real estate career was launched immediately. Initially employed by Florida National Bank’s holding company, he later became CFO of American Federal Savings and Loan, financing homes and commercial properties and working on building and development projects. He quickly learned that he belonged out in the field making things happen, rather than crunching numbers in an office. By 1982, the Trine family included five children, five dogs and four cats. His quest for a better quality of life brought him to the Highlands-Cashiers Plateau, where he immediately recognized what an idyllic existence it would provide. He packed up his entire menagerie and moved from an oceanfront home in Atlantic Beach, FL to his newly acquired farm in Glenville, NC. His family continued to grow, expanding to include llamas, donkeys, cows, goats, sheep, turkeys and chickens. Now with seven children and thirteen grandchildren, he knows he made the right choice! Once ensconced in North Carolina, Ray wasted no time earning his North Carolina Broker’s license. He went to work for one of the oldest real estate firms in the area, V.C. Smith Real Estate, which he bought outright two years later. He soon made his mark as the number one real estate office in sales and listings in the Cashiers area for many years running. Ray proceeded to shape the area with his active involvement in the sale of land tracts, as well as the development of many residential communities such as Bald Rock, Summerhill, Glenshore, Trillium, Bear Lake Preserve, Bridge Creek, Glen Laurel, and Glen Pointe. With such a large family, community involvement was also important to Ray. He has been President of the Blue Ridge School PTA, elected to the Jackson County School Board, and served on the Cashiers Chamber of Commerce, Friends of Lake Glenville and many private community boards and architectural review committees. Coupled with his dedicated community involvement, Ray’s background of accounting, property development, and real estate sales has provided him with priceless insights into this unique area. Ray is the quintessential guide to the Highlands-Cashiers Plateau, offering personal experience, countless fascinating local narratives and a seemingly limitless knowledge of mountain living. Ray is a seasoned professional who brings enthusiasm, vision and over 45 years of experience to the team at Silver Creek Real Estate Group. Ray is licensed in both North Carolina and South Carolina.

“My wife and I have moved many times in the last 30 years and dealt with a lot of agents. We have now dealt with Ray on many transactions and believe strongly that he is by far the best. His integrity, professionalism, and knowledge of the mountain market are unparalleled. We are glad we found him and more so appreciate his warm smile and good nature. He is the very best.
