A LETTER FROM OUR PRESIDENT

The Highlands-Cashiers Plateau in the beautiful mountains of Western North Carolina has attracted seasonal visitors for generations. Over the last several years, we have seen a significant increase in those calling our community home for the majority of the year. For those seeking a quieter laid-back lifestyle of a smaller community that offers four distinct seasons, the area remains the great escape for those escaping the summer heat across the Southeast. While some seasonal residents would choose to skip winter’s bite altogether, I and many other denizens of the Plateau have learned to appreciate the vivid sunsets, the trails of smoke escaping from snow-covered roofs, and leisurely walks through freshly fallen snow. We read books we never quite got around to during the rest of the year and use the quiet to consider our goals for the new year. 2020 was a banner year for real estate sales with Silver Creek completing more transactions than any other office on the Plateau thanks to our remarkable agents and their loyal clients. We are springboarding from this success to launch another remarkable year for sales in 2021. Should you engage us to sell your home, you will find a committed partner in Silver Creek Real Estate Group; our firm is equipped with a world-class marketing package that offers all the tools necessary to sell your home quickly and for the best price. We are busy actively listing and selling property year-round. For those ready to purchase their mountain escape, our team of seasoned agents is delivering dreams all year long. The winter months are perfect for buying so you can start enjoying your new retreat for the season. Wherever you choose to spend your winter season, we invite you to join us in spirit by browsing this issue of NC Living.

a sunny outlook IS NOW THE TIME TO SELL?

A CONVERSATION WITH OWNER/ PRESIDENT, JOCHEN LUCKE by Kristin Bowen

The global pandemic has brought people from all over the country to Western North Carolina. Many Americans are adopting major lifestyle changes, including embracing mountainous areas like ours to find a simpler way of living for themselves and their families. It is easy to freely move about, relax and play here when surrounded by a natural world filled with treasured National Forests, layered blue mountains, clean oxygen to breathe, clear skies, and small-town charm. The secret is out that we have all of this and so much more, and the boom in real estate on the Plateau is a prime indication of this. Last spring and just one month into the pandemic, I had the pleasure of a socially-distanced interview with Jochen Lucke, the president of Silver Creek Real Estate Group and publisher of NC Living Magazine. We discussed the outlook of real estate then, published in our Spring 2020 issue, and just this past November we reconvened on the topic once again.

Q&A KB: Thank you, Jochen, for taking a few minutes at an unprecedentedly busy time to share your expertise on where we are now with local real estate and what we might expect going forward. Buyers and sellers look to you and your team of seasoned brokers for answers, and now more than ever, they have questions. First of all, can you give your perspective as to what has happened with the local real estate market since the start of the global pandemic? JL: In 2020, Highlands-Cashiers real estate sales are up 85% from 2019. The continued desirability of the Plateau for those seeking seasonal and full-time residences accelerated at a rapid pace. I do not recall a period when we have spent so much time at home. This past year, with extended family returning home in some cases, the desire to escape to the beautiful mountains of Western North Carolina and enjoy the cool summer temperatures, the great outdoors, and a quieter way of life, fueled our record sales volume. Our team has completed

more transactions than any other firm on the Plateau thanks to our remarkable agents and their loyal clients. KB: Seeing the trend to buy in the local area with 2020 real estate sales more than doubling and in some places tripling across the Plateau versus 2019, can you project what this same market may look like in 2021? JL: We have so many clients that are still seeking to purchase homes on the Plateau, I see 2021 sales only limited by the supply of inventory. KB: So you are saying now is a good time to sell a home? JL: Yes, to be clear, the demand is greater than the supply. Our inventory of homes is incredibly low. The Silver Creek team has been very proactive and engaged with many potential sellers already and we are looking forward to offering new homes to the market over these winter and spring months. Our comprehensive marketing program has been recognized by both our clients and national

1 4 S I LVER CR E E K R E AL E STATE G R O U P

industry groups as exceptional, and it delivers results! While we saw national franchises and local competitors reduce marketing expenditures during the pandemic, Silver Creek increased our spending which has proven to be beneficial for our sellers and brokers. Extraordinary marketing continues to be crucial in selling properties for the highest and best price. Don’t settle for average marketing when you can receive exceptional marketing with Silver Creek. If a homeowner has even the slightest notion of selling in the next few years, now is the time to seriously consider it. Our team is available to assist in every step of the process.

THE MARKET

Silver Creek Real Estate Group won multiple awards once again in the Website Rankings by Real Trends, competing against real estate brands all across the nation.

KB: Due to the pandemic, "Zoom Towns" are popping up all over the country, a term used to refer to refuge-seekers who wish to live and work remotely in more rural areas. Do you believe the Plateau has transitioned from a secondary homeowners market to a primary one? Who wouldn’t want to live out their dream of residing full time in our Blue Ridge Mountains? JL: We have definitely seen an increase in those working and studying remotely. I predict this trend will continue as companies across many industries permanently change their work culture to allow their team members to work remotely. Connectivity will continue to be a major factor for many buyers. Those

communities that have taken steps to “connect” their community to high-speed internet will be much more desirable in the future to buyers. KB: Last we spoke, as a technologically advanced company, you cited there was a 34% increase in your website traffic February thru April. What is that increase now? JL: At the time of this interview (November 2020), our website traffic increased over 105% through the end of October 2020. Our digital marketing team continues to deliver engaging content to a targeted audience for maximum exposure of our clients’ properties.

THE MARKET

The Lake Glenville Discovery Center offers room for Silver Creek’s ever-growing team and a place for visitors and clients to learn more about the Lake Glenville area and all that it offers.

KB: As a market leader consistently topping performance charts and winning awards, I understand the company landed another award this past year. Can you tell us about it? JL: Yes, NCLiving.com has been recognized in five categories this year by Real Trends, which ranks real estate websites across the country. Our website design has evolved over the years, but it has always stayed true to our brand, providing value to those who use us as their number one source for all things Plateau. KB: You've announced the addition of your second office location, situated on pristine Lake Glenville. How does this bolster your already dominant presence in the lake market?

16 SI LVER C R E E K R E AL E STATE G R O U P

JL: Just as we carefully consider before adding any brokers to our top-producing team, we thoughtfully deliberated before adding to our footprint. I believe this new space on Highway 107 North will help us better serve our clients and be a timely addition to our thriving firm. The branch, dubbed the “Lake Glenville Discovery Center,” offers room for Silver Creek’s ever-growing team and a place for visitors and clients to learn more about the Lake Glenville area and all that it offers. In addition to two new staff members, Melissa Haggar-Jordan and Darlene Ott, we have welcomed four brokers to our team this year: Rick Jackson, Kevin Koach, Rob Whitney, and Chris Duffy.

THE MARKET

The Library Kitchen & Bar chef and staff enjoying NC Living Magazine, a Silver Creek Real Estate Group publication, which is celebrating its fifth year of publication.

KB: It appears that this particular market is breaking all real estate sales records. With interest rates continuing to remain low and sales expected to continue, why should someone choose Silver Creek Real Estate Group to assist them in buying or selling a home? JL: The last two years have seen a record level of sales on the Plateau. Our team continues to utilize the latest in technology, as well as work

to improve and expand our marketing programs to assist homebuyers and sellers. While national franchises are hampered by decisions made in faraway cities and not necessarily focused on our local market, Silver Creek is locally owned and operated. We strive to focus on what is best for our clients and the market, which delivers exceptional results. Our continued success is built on mutually beneficial, long-term relationships. We live and breathe our motto, “Building Relationships and Delivering Dreams.

TRAVEL

hello '21! SCRATCH YOUR TRAVEL ITCH WITH REGIONAL TRIPS THAT DON'T INVOLVE A PLANE RIDE.

TRAVEL

by Kristin Bowen

IT IS NOT ALWAYS EASY TO SAY GOODBYE, but with a resounding “Adios!” we shut the door firmly on the past year and enthusiastically welcome in 2021! With good news on forthcoming vaccinations calming our frayed nerves, we rejoice with the hope of freely and safely traveling once again. Although a vacation to Europe may not be imminent, our limbs yearn to stretch a little longer outside the comfort of our beautiful mountain oasis on the Highlands-Cashiers Plateau. Take a look at some fresh regional ideas that have caught the eye of the NC Living travel team to be added to the future vacation calendar. It’s time to happily coordinate a breakout and explore some not too distant interesting destinations.

Closer To Home... Western North Carolina & Northeastern Tennessee North Carolina’s beloved Great Smoky National Park (GRSM) is one of our top picks for nearby adventure with its sprawling landscape of wildflowers and fauna, high elevation views, waterfalls, streams, ancient mountains, remnants of Southern Appalachian life, and oldgrowth forests. Nestled in Western North Carolina west of Asheville and spilling over into Tennessee, GRSM is a national treasure ranking at the top of the list as the most visited national park in America. And because of this title, it is best to visit in the off-season to avoid the crowds. The main event in this park is hiking for all levels, but for all nature lovers, it is a great go-to spot for forest bathing and indulging in the natural world. With 522,427 acres to explore, one can plan a day trip, but a couple of nights would be ideal. Top visitor sites include Clingman’s Dome (elev. 6,644’), the highest peak, and Cades Cove, a verdant valley known for its abundant wildlife. Just over the border in the Smoky Mountains of Tennessee is a magical place called Trillium Gap, a 6.7-mile trail. After an extensive two-year renovation

project, the trail is now open again to visitors. Aweinspiring sites include the vast hemlock groves, Grotto Falls (only one mile in), and the stunning peak of Mount Le Conte (elev. 6,593’) graciously rewarding conquerors with unforgettable views. The highest guest lodge in the eastern United States, one only accessible by foot, is LeConte Lodge sitting at an elevation of 6,400’ and which needs to be booked well in advance due to its popularity. Its Appalachian rustic vibe with roughhewn heated cabins lures guests who long for that sitting-on-top-of-the-world kind of feeling. The Lodge is old school and even uses llamas on the trail to cart supplies to and fro. Exploring GRSM closer to Asheville, you’ll find the extraordinary Mount Mitchell standing as the highest peak east of the Mississippi River at 6,684’. This lush 300-million-year-old mountain is blanketed in Frasier Fur, rhododendron, mountain laurel, maple, spruce, and birch trees. Hiking is available year-round. Stay in the nearby town of charming Burnsville which can serve as a convenient base to visit Mt. Mitchell and allow easy access to explore the WNC Quilt Trail, the impressive creative arts and textiles found at Penland School of Crafts and Echoview Fiber Mill, the internationally known Robert Levin Glass studio, and second-generation McWhirter Pottery. On your return home, treat yourself to a stay at the historic and newly renovated Swag, a luxury mountaintop property near Waynesville. Andrew Harper of the Hideaway Report and Condé Nast Traveler gush over this diamond in the rough by calling it the “Most Romantic Hideaway” and “Top Resort in the South,” respectively.

A Little Further Away… Looking to rev the engine and test the tires of your sports car or motorcycle? When a little thrill ride is in order, head two hours west through the Nantahala Forest to Robbinsville, NC, to take on the Tail of the

Dragon. It is a hair-raising adventure made up of eleven jaw-dropping miles of uninterrupted asphalt located in Deals Gap. The Tail of the Dragon is not for those prone to motion sickness since it is an active drive weaving through the Great Smoky Mountains and Cherokee National Forest creating a mountain-hugging terrain with 318 curves. There are several pull-off points with stunning views for photo ops. Before you get to The Tail of the Dragon there are a few worthwhile stops. Around the time you see beautiful Fontana Lake, veer off the main road toward signs for Robbinsville and Lake Santeetlah. The latter is unspoiled—absolutely worth a canoe or kayak ride. Adjacent to the lake and just as special is the 3,800+ acre Joyce Kilmer Memorial Forest—a favorite of inthe-know hikers. This forest is one of the last remaining stand of old-growth trees with over 100 different tree

species, many over 400 years old and 20 feet in girth. Several movies were filmed in the area including The Fugitive with Harrison Ford, Nell with Jodi Foster, and A Walk in the Woods with Robert Redford and Emma Thompson. Just beyond these you’ll reach the start of the Tail of the Dragon and thirty minutes and one joy ride later, you’ll find yourself in Chilhowee, TN. And if you find yourself in this part of Tennessee, you might as well go to heaven with a stay at one or the other luxury resorts, Blackberry Mountain or Blackberry Farm, both owned and operated by the Beall Family. These resorts rank top in America for five-star stays and have too many awards and accolades to count. Further Still… Lowcountry South Carolina It's always so surprising that driving southeast just over four hours away you can find the alluring marshlands of South Carolina, a vastly different topography than our mountainous environs here on the Highlands-Cashiers Plateau. Before you hit this briny Atlantic coast, indulge in a little small city hopping with visits to Greenville and Columbia, SC. From Lexington to Louisville, the Kentucky Bourbon Trail tour winds through a picturesque land of lush rolling hills, with champion horses peering over long white fences and miles and miles of legendary bourbon producers like Four Roses, Maker’s Mark, Woodford, Willett, and Jim Beam. The local motto “Where the spirit leads you” could not say it better as you pause from place to fabled place for an education and tasting. COVID-friendly craft tours guide you through the 200-year-old process and master brewers and distillers share the rich stories about then and now. Visit the official website at kentuckybourbontrail.com or kybourbontrail.com where you will find ample information about curated tours for groups and self-guided options enabling you to plan your own provocative adventure. Most explorers base in Lexington, Louisville or Bardstown staying at inns like the Beaumont, Ashford Acres, Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill, or Historic Boone Tavern. Airbnb offers many quaint cottages along the trail too if you would like your own space. Foodies rejoice at the plentiful options to dine along the route with top choices like The Stave, Distilled, and Old Owl Tavern. Of course, bourbon bars are ubiquitous like pubs in Ireland. Not only will you return home with a new appreciation for bourbon and liquid souvenirs to stock the bar, but most go home raving about their new favorite bourbon-infused coffee drink called the Kentucky Sundowner.

How a group of students kept the mystical folklore and traditions of Southern Appalachia alive for a new generation Written by Kristin Bowen

HISTORY

Opposite page: Farmers have a discussion with Rabun Gap School in view in 1937.

The path from Atlanta to our mountain oasis

on the Highlands-Cashiers Plateau has never been more tread upon than now with city dwellers eager to escape the fray and seek green space and fresh, clean air. Those familiar with the route generally know the landmarks along the way and tick them off one by one like items on a shopping list. As tiny town after town flashes by and the bumpier the North Georgia skyline gets, the gas pedal hits the floor to bring the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina ever so closer. As you enter Rabun County, Georgia, you might stop to pick up provisions at the Ingles in Clayton, and then a few miles further in Dillard, you begin climbing the mountain toward Highlands. Most likely you are so focused on getting from A to B, you blinked and missed the blip of a town, contrary to its name, called Mountain City. To jog your memory, you might recall the brown tourist sign pointing west to Foxfire Museum and Heritage Center. You may have even wondered about it. There is a story there, and it is rich and fascinating one about how a classroom of wayward teenagers brought fame and fortune to this rural hamlet of just over a thousand residents. The tale begins with the area surrounding Rabun Gap-

Nacoochee School, a college preparatory day and boarding school which sits on the edge of Mountain City, which was once dominated by a conventional Southern Appalachian community. Far from civilization, the people had to be resourceful and inventive and live off the land to survive. Centuries-old traditions, farming techniques, recipes, and medicinal remedies were passed down from generation to generation. However, as time passed, the early 1900s brought urban development closer, and with it, advancements in technology, causing the Appalachian traditions to slowly disappear. Then in 1966, something remarkable happened. A young educator, fresh out of Cornell University, landed a teaching job at Rabun Gap-Nacoochee School. He found his new students bored, insolent, and struggling to find their way during a tumultuous time in our country’s history. To steer them toward a brighter future, he smartly engaged his students with an experimental writing exercise—create a free-thinking historical magazine drawing attention to the Southern Appalachian people and their all but lost culture. A buzz formed as students canvassed local elders for their recollections about the pioneer era, occurring just about the time the awardwinning movie Deliverance swept through movie theaters across the country and typified these same people as

The magazine ignited a strange and unexpected widespread curiosity about this society, so much so that the magazine spun off into a nationally acclaimed, best-selling book series known as Foxfire. The twelve-volume collection covered Appalachian topics such as gristmill making, hog dressing, basket weaving, snake lore, faith healing, moonshine, butter churning, food foraging, ghost stories, rites and customs, and banjo and dulcimer playing. “This spark of an idea turned into a phenomenon of education and living history, exploring how the past contributes to who we are and what we can become—how the past illuminates our present and inspires imagination,” recount Foxfire supporters. “One that broke barriers and told the real story of the people and their vanishing way of life.”

Proceeds from Foxfire book sales enabled future students, trustees of the charge, to buy 106 acres to build a museum and heritage center in 1974. Walk through history at the outdoor museum where twenty authentic log homes present life as it was in the Pioneer era from the 1820s to the 1940s. Take a look at the wagons, tools, gristmills, and even a log cabin chapel replica. The gift shop offers the Foxfire books for sale, as well as regionally made pottery, textiles, soaps, and more. The museum's proceeds support the Foxfire mission and local youth enrichment programs. Open seven days a week from noon to 4:30, this is an outdoor education for the whole family. He is also past Chairman of both the Highlands-Cashiers Hospital Foundation and The Village Green boards and served on the boards of the Highlands-Cashiers Hospital and Fidelia Eckerd Living Center. From the start, beginning with the photo shoot, video and sales counseling on through qualified showings and the closing, all services were comprehensive and very professional. Excellent marketing of our property." - BOB AND CHERYL STARKEY

“There are real estate agents, and then there is Jochen Lucke. From the beginning of the search process until completion of our purchase, I have never worked with a realtor so committed to finding a home that fit our needs. PARKER ANDERSON BROKER | 828-200-2695 | PARKERANDERSON,NCLIVING.COM

about me

Hailing from Northwest Georgia, Parker is a third-generation realtor who is passionate about creating bonds with his clients. He spent six years focusing on and helping to grow the booming residential market in New Orleans before relocating to Cashiers. Parker is extremely steadfast in assisting and representing both buyers and sellers with any of their real estate needs throughout the Highlands-Cashiers Plateau. As a realtor in the North Carolina mountains, Parker is able to combine his passion for real estate with his love of the outdoors, fine dining, and community involvement. He is no stranger to the mountains as he was a frequent visitor to Southern Appalachia throughout his childhood and lived in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, for a period of his adult life. Parker's wife, Caroline, was both a camper and counselor at Camp Merrie-Woode in Sapphire for 13 summers. This, along with a family home for 10 years in Cashiers, is what led them to the Plateau for many extended trips and holidays. They married at High Hampton in May 2017 and decided to leave the Crescent City to make Cashiers their permanent home in 2019. Parker and Caroline are expecting their first child in 2021 and are looking forward to raising their family in the mountains! Parker is committed to community involvement, from attending Church of the Good Shepherd to serving on his HOA board, as well as volunteering at the Village Green. Outside of the office, you can also find him hiking the many mountains in our area, reading a book, or spending time enjoying this lovely place called home with his wife, Caroline, and their golden retrievers, Jane and Winnie.

"My wife Kim and I had been on a three year journey to try and find the right mountain home for us in Highlands. The journey was exhausting, until we met Parker Anderson from Silver Creek Real Estate Group in September 2020. Parker took the time to get to know us and to find out exactly what we were looking for in a mountain home and the desired area we wanted to be in. With this information and his extensive knowledge of the Highlands area and the real estate market, Parker found the perfect home for us by the end of October 2020 and we closed within 30 days. Parker helped make our dream of owning the perfect mountain home come true. As with most real estate agents, once the closing happens you rarely hear from them again, until you're ready for that next sale or purchase. This is not the case with Parker Anderson. Since the closing Parker has followed up with us to make sure we were happy and to see if we needed anything. We had several appointments with service contractors and vendors at our home that we were unable to meet. Parker quickly offered his time to meet these companies and to ensure the service/repairs were done correctly. I truly believe we not only have an amazing real estate agent but a good friend in Parker Anderson. When thinking about buying or selling a home in the Highlands, Cashiers, Sapphire or Glenville area, look no further than Parker Anderson. He will truly exceed your expectations!" - FRANK WILLIAMS

That's not surprising, as Chris was the voice of the Plateau for a number of years as the morning show host on WHLC FM 104.5. Once you meet Chris, you'll certainly never miss him again, as his 6'9" stature literally makes him stand above the crowd. Chris was born in Germany and grew up in Washington, D.C. After studying at Georgia Tech and graduating from the University of Maryland, Chris moved to Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, where he lived for 22 years. In Canada, Chris worked as an on-air talent on numerous radio stations. He moved to Highlands in 2017 to take the job at WHLC. "I moved to the mountains to become the voice of Highlands, little did I know how much the Highlands-Cashiers Plateau would speak to me." An avid cook, Chris attended Le Cordon Bleu receiving a Certificat de Traiteur and loves sampling all the culinary delights the Highlands-Cashiers area has to offer. Chris quickly fell in love with the Highlands-Cashiers Plateau and decided he wanted to help other people enjoy our beautiful nature and live in our truly unique and amazing community. While he's no longer on the air, Chris still gets behind the mic as the in-game P.A. announcer for Highlands High School Basketball.

KEVIN KOACH BROKER | 828-556-9545 | KEVINKOACH.NCLIVING.COM

about me

Born and raised in Sarasota, Florida, Kevin was fortunate his family had the good sense to escape the heat and humidity of Southwest Florida summers and vacation in the cool mountain air of Western North Carolina. Spending time in the Highlands-Cashiers area since he was a young boy led to a genuine appreciation for the miles of hiking trails, gentle lakes, and towering waterfalls, all of which add to the allure of the Plateau landscape. After graduating from college, Kevin struck out for the open plains of the West where he spent the next six and a half years developing and managing multiple companies in the oil and gas industry in North Dakota. After enduring numerous long winters, the allure of his boyhood summer home proved too strong and, after marrying his wife Lindsey in June of 2019, they moved permanently to the Highlands-Cashiers area. Once settled in their new home, Kevin obtained his North Carolina real estate license with the goal of sharing his love of Plateau-style living. When not advocating for the lifestyle, Kevin is an avid outdoorsman and can be found hiking with his beautiful wife, fishing, kayaking, playing a round of golf, or simply sitting on the back deck admiring the views.

"Kevin Koach is a very professional, reliable and trustworthy real estate agent who went above and beyond to find my dream home and assist in the closing which was a little difficult especially being from out of state. He was very organized. He was always available for questions or requests. I would not hesitate to use Kevin as your real estate agent if you are in the market for a new home in the Sapphire/Cashiers area." - STACY KOSCINSKI

"I knew working with Kevin Koach was going to be a terrific experience and comfortable fit from the first time he and I spoke on the phone. Kevin is extremely diligent and is an excellent communicator, which was essential since we live more than four hours away. We find Kevin to be a true professional in every sense of the word. His local knowledge of the area helped us immensely and quickly allowed us to focus on what was truly important to us. He was always available to meet us in person, or for a phone call at our convenience. Our experience was nothing but a pleasure because of Kevin’s expertise and demeanor. We highly recommend Kevin and will continue to use he and the Silver Creek organization for all of our future realtor needs..." - DAN & KATHY

EDDY McDONALD

about me

BROKER | 828-421-8196 | EDDYMCDONALD,NCLIVING.COM

Eddy McDonald's lifelong passion and talent for golf led him to a career as a PGA professional. After relocating from Destin, Florida for a position at Highlands Falls Country Club in 1995, Eddy fell in love with the Highlands-Cashiers Plateau and knew he'd found home. Looking to follow his interest in development, Eddy embarked on his real estate career at Highlands Cove (now Old Edwards Club at Highlands Cove), where he spent 13 years helping to grow Highlands Cove from its first home to the community it is today. Eddy's knowledge of the area and passion for building relationships with his buyers and sellers have been major factors in his success. He believes in going above and beyond to assist his real estate clients, providing them with a superior level of service and the resources to make informed decisions. Eddy enjoys spending time with his young daughter, Sara. They can be found on the golf course, hiking trails, or simply out exploring the natural beauty of the Highlands-Cashiers area.

“...Eddy is a fabulous realtor. He has been responsible for our rental home for the last year and has increased our rentals by 200%! He knows marketing and internet advertising. He is always available and responsive to our needs and those of the renters. He has what it takes to make an excellent agent - friendly and smart, a strong work ethic, and salesmanship.” - JOE AND MARY S.

“Eddy is a busy professional, yet he was always extremely responsive in person, phone, or text, making the process of buying this home from another state seamless. Without a doubt, we found and purchased our home in Cashiers because Eddy was our broker. Both before and after the closing Eddy has gone far beyond what was actually required. Thank you, Eddy McDonald, for being such a great person, professional, and realtor!” - J.S.

"We had the extreme pleasure of working with Eddy in the recent purchase of our home in Cashiers. Eddy quickly sensed what we were looking for and arranged a nice variety of homes for us to see. CASSIE NEAL BROKER | 828-226-0383 | CASSIENEAL.NCLIVING.COM

about me

Born and raised in a military family, Cassie Neal has lived in many beautiful places over the years — from Florida to Alaska — but Western North Carolina is her favorite place to be. Cassie has been part of the local real estate business for over 20 years, starting her career at Village Realty in 2000. She has extensive knowledge of marketing, technology, and the greater Sapphire and Cashiers market and has earned a reputation among agents as someone who is hardworking and extremely competent. Her sense of responsibility to her clients and attention to detail make her an asset to anyone looking to buy or sell property in the area. Cassie is an active member of the Highlands-Cashiers Board of Realtors and currently serves as a director on the MLS Board. She has also served on the Technology Committee in the past. Her National Association of Realtors Short Sales and Foreclosure Resource Certification has proven to be beneficial in the many short-sale, foreclosure, and REO transactions she has closed over the years. When Cassie isn’t working with clients, she is spending time with her family. She also enjoys camping, tennis, boating, dining out with friends, and of course, shopping! Her down-to-earth personality, perseverance and willingness to go the extra mile make her a great addition to Silver Creek Real Estate Group.

"Cassie was great for us. After seeing three properties, my wife and I totally flip-flopped on what we wanted to see. She didn’t miss a beat, and we found our house an hour later. She facilitated negotiations and closing from three different locations flawlessly. We really liked her." - WILLIAM WARD AND ROBIN ALLEN

"To anyone buying or, in particular, selling a home in the Sapphire Valley area, you will not find a broker that will work harder for you. We had our home on and off the market a couple of times over the past two years and experienced minimal activity. With Cassie things really began to click. Due to her marketing efforts showings increased dramatically. Homes only sell when they’re shown to enough potential buyers. She does the little things that make her successful and gets you as a seller results. For example, with cooler weather approaching and us away, we winterize the home. Cassie would take the time to go by ahead of showings, turn on the water and hot water heater, adjust the home temperature to a comfortable level and make sure all was in good order, and then put all back as we left it. She went over and above our expectations based on prior experience. Can’t say enough about her professionalism, courtesy, integrity and work ethic ... a real pro and a joy to work with." - GAIL AND ROD BRAZZELL

CHUCK SELF BROKER | 828-734-7302 | CHUCKSELF.NCLIVING.COM

about me

In search of mild temperatures and a place to unwind, Chuck made his first visit to the Cashiers-Highlands area more than 20 years ago on a summer getaway with his wife, Ann, and their two small children. During that short visit, Chuck knew that Western North Carolina was where he wanted to be. The desire for the mountain lifestyle led him to search for property in the area for several years until he found the perfect piece of land for the home of their dreams. The home was intended to be their second residence until Chuck's retirement. But the lure of the Blue Ridge Mountains soon prompted the Selfs to realize that it was time to say goodbye to the intense pace, traffic and heat of Atlanta, and after the construction of their new home was completed, Chuck and Ann settled in permanently to enjoy the simplicity and splendor of mountain living. Prior to selling real estate, Chuck enjoyed a successful sales career in the television and entertainment industry, working most recently as Vice President of Sales for both Raycom Sports in Charlotte and Warner Brothers Television in Atlanta. Spending a moment with Chuck reveals his passion for everything this area has to offer. He finds tremendous satisfaction in matching his clients with their dream mountain home or home site. Chuck also enjoys golf, tennis, hiking, biking, boating on Lake Glenville, and any other reason he can think of to be outdoors. Even the dark night beckons him outside to gaze at the beautiful star-filled sky, bringing back cherished childhood memories so easily forgotten while living in the big city. Chuck is an active member of the Cashiers-Highlands community, having served in board positions with the Cashiers-Highlands Humane Society, Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Cashiers, and the Highlands-Cashiers Board of Realtors. Chuck is currently serving on the board of the Blue Ridge School Education Foundation. Chuck and his wife are active members of Mountaintop Golf and Lake Club. Chuck’s wife, Ann, is a United Methodist Minister and also serves as the Executive Director of The Village Green in Cashiers—the 13.2-acre park at the center of town. Chuck and Ann look forward to their visits to the mountains from their daughter who lives in Atlanta, and their son, daughter-inlaw, and two grandsons who reside in Nashville.

“If you want a professional real estate agent to get the job done, list with Chuck Self. His integrity and level of work ethic are beyond any expectation you may have. Our experience with Chuck proved to be easy and pain-free. He sold our house DAYS after we listed with him. After interviewing other agents, we chose Chuck because we felt like he would work hard to get our property sold ... he did just that and also became a dear friend in the process. If we purchase another property in the Cashiers area, it will be with Chuck as our agent as we feel very comfortable with him at the helm. He will surpass all of your expectations as he is a man of character, wisdom and simply someone you will enjoy being with.” - ROBBIE AND KAREN

Ray’s passion for all things real estate blossomed early in his life. After graduating with an accounting degree from the University of North Florida in 1971, his real estate career was launched immediately. Initially employed by Florida National Bank’s holding company, he later became CFO of American Federal Savings and Loan, financing homes and commercial properties and working on building and development projects. He quickly learned that he belonged out in the field making things happen, rather than crunching numbers in an office. By 1982, the Trine family included five children, five dogs and four cats. His quest for a better quality of life brought him to the Highlands-Cashiers Plateau, where he immediately recognized what an idyllic existence it would provide. He packed up his entire menagerie and moved from an oceanfront home in Atlantic Beach, FL to his newly acquired farm in Glenville, NC. His family continued to grow, expanding to include llamas, donkeys, cows, goats, sheep, turkeys and chickens. Now with seven children and thirteen grandchildren, he knows he made the right choice! Once ensconced in North Carolina, Ray wasted no time earning his North Carolina Broker’s license. He went to work for one of the oldest real estate firms in the area, V.C. Smith Real Estate, which he bought outright two years later. He soon made his mark as the number one real estate office in sales and listings in the Cashiers area for many years running. Ray proceeded to shape the area with his active involvement in the sale of land tracts, as well as the development of many residential communities such as Bald Rock, Summerhill, Glenshore, Trillium, Bear Lake Preserve, Bridge Creek, Glen Laurel, and Glen Pointe. With such a large family, community involvement was also important to Ray. He has been President of the Blue Ridge School PTA, elected to the Jackson County School Board, and served on the Cashiers Chamber of Commerce, Friends of Lake Glenville and many private community boards and architectural review committees. Coupled with his dedicated community involvement, Ray’s background of accounting, property development, and real estate sales has provided him with priceless insights into this unique area. Ray is the quintessential guide to the Highlands-Cashiers Plateau, offering personal experience, countless fascinating local narratives and a seemingly limitless knowledge of mountain living. Ray is a seasoned professional who brings enthusiasm, vision and over 45 years of experience to the team at Silver Creek Real Estate Group. Ray is licensed in both North Carolina and South Carolina.

“My wife and I have moved many times in the last 30 years and dealt with a lot of agents. We have now dealt with Ray on many transactions and believe strongly that he is by far the best. about me

BROKER | 828-399-1196 | ROBWHITNEY.NCLIVING.COM

After growing up in Brentwood, Tennessee, Rob Whitney moved to Knoxville to attend the University of Tennessee. During college, Rob worked for GNC (General Nutrition Company), eventually becoming a franchisee of two store locations. While on vacation at Lake Glenville, he met who would become his future wife, Susanne Moore. Susanne has been a general contractor since she moved to the area in 1997, where her mother had been a real estate broker for some time. After only a week, Rob knew she was "the one", and a year later, sold his stores, moved to the Highlands-Cashiers Plateau, and married Susanne on Snowbird Mountain. Rob knew he wanted to be a part of the family business in some manner and earned his real estate license in 2005. Since then, Rob has become a skilled expert in the area's real estate market. Rob's retail background aids him in his real estate career, but Rob loves no longer being confined to a small store, instead spending every day in the beautiful outdoors helping his clients find their next dream vacation property. His clients looking to build or renovate a home can draw from his wife's well of knowledge to make informed decisions. Rob enjoys working with both buyers and sellers, helping them achieve their real estate goals by empowering them with the necessary guidance and support.

Why did you choose Silver Creek Real Estate Group? I wanted to be with a top producing real estate firm that is constantly finding ways to better serve their clients and the community.

Currently, what is your favorite Plateau restaurant? I love taking my wife Susanne for a date night at The Orchard Restaurant in Cashiers.

"Rob Whitney is absolutely the BEST. He is so knowledgeable about the area and very easy to work with. We have enjoyed getting to know him and appreciate all of his help in finding us a great house. We HIGHLY recommend him." - SARCAV

Lake Toxaway Once a well-known retreat among the nation's most wellto-do citizens, including Thomas Edison, Henry Ford, and Harvey Firestone, Lake Toxaway continues to draw seasonal residents from all over the world.

P

art of the grand vision of Pittsburgh entrepreneur E.H. Jennings in 1902, the rugged terrain associated with the area was transformed into a beautiful 614-acre mountain lake. Named by its creator, Lake Toxaway was the first artificial lake built in the Appalachians. Jennings began building the community by erecting The Toxaway Inn along the lake's shoreline; he knew visitors would become as enamored with the area as he was. It quickly became a well-known retreat among the nation's most well-to-do citizens, including Thomas Edison, Henry Ford, and Harvey Firestone. While on vacation at Lake Toxaway, socialite and Savannah native Lucy Camp Armstrong fell in love with the area. She bought 40 acres around the lake and built an estate, lavish gardens, and riding stables. During heavy rains in the summer of 1916, the area experienced flooding and a dam gave way, emptying Lake Toxaway completely. Armstrong's estate and the Inn held fast, but with no lake, the area lost its appeal for the vacationing jet set. This event eventually led to the demise of The Toxaway Inn, which stood empty for 30 years before being demolished in 1948. Ms. Armstrong continued to love the area, took up permanent residence at her estate, and

lived long enough to see her dream realized when the lake was restored to its original beauty in the 1960s. After her death in 1970, Ms. Armstrong's estate was transformed into The Greystone Inn, the crown jewel of the Lake Toxaway community. Vacationers continue to be drawn to the area just as Jennings and Armstrong once were. Today, Lake Toxaway Estates is the largest community on the lake, made up of a network of individual neighborhoods and outstanding amenities. Neighborhoods of this premier vacation home destination include Bear Wallow Springs, Club Colony, Deep Ford Falls, Hawk Mountain, Lakeside Mountain, Meadow Ridge, Panther Ridge, Sutton's Cove and Toxaway Mountain. The settings for home sites in Lake Toxaway Estates vary widely – from a scenic view of either Lake Toxaway or Lake Cardinal to the peace and quiet of the heavily wooded forest to the excitement of a golf course or the majestic scenery of a mountain view. Amenities include access to the state's largest private lake, as well as Lake Toxaway Country Club, featuring fine dining, tennis, swimming, fitness center and golf on an 18-hole championship golf course, designed by Kris Spence.
