Laura Moser Preferred Medium: acrylic on canvas lauramoserart.com Creating provocative and conversation-worthy art in her Cashiers studio, Laura, once an Atlanta-based artist, is passionate about her subject matter. A North Carolina native and graduate of UNC Chapel Hill, Laura began her career in advertising, but after twelve years in the workforce, she decided to go back to school to study fine arts at the University of Houston. Painting Inspiration: “My work attempts to make sense of the chaotic world we live in, adding structure, hope and a sense of calm to an otherwise tumultuous setting. While the pieces I create are mostly abstract, I am inspired by nature and the positive forces around me. Through my work I hope to invoke inspiration.” Favorite Artists: "Matisse and Giorgio Morandi, an abstract painter in the neutral palette."

How does painting in Cashiers differ from when you were in Atlanta painting? “I tend to paint trees and landscapes. The mood of the paintings are calmer and more serene here. In Atlanta it is all about the busy city life… [but] the color here is so intense! I love the neutral palette, but last spring I did a series of bright green and turquoise landscapes. And in the fall, yellow started creeping into my work.” How did the pandemic change you and your approach to your art? “During the pandemic we were staying in Cashiers in a very small cottage and I needed a place to paint. I learned about having a studio and gallery that had a retail side. We are open by appointment right now but hope to have regular hours in the summer. "I was also painting more because I had more time, which led to more experimentation. Sometimes it worked, sometimes not, but I always learned from the process. I also started working more with textiles and paper. All last year we had guest artists who would come show their work for a weekend. I hope to continue to have guest artists for the 2021 summer season.” To find out Laura's passions, see page 104.

Lyle Nichols Preferred Medium: oil on canvas fullhousegallery.com
A native of Valdosta, Georgia, Lyle Nichols led a successful career as a real estate attorney in Atlanta. He is a natural creative playing many instruments including the banjo and mandolin. He is the epitome of the statement, “You are never too old to learn something new.” At the age of fifty, he discovered a passion for painting and taught himself to paint. He resides in Highlands where he finds joy in studying people and turning his interpretations of life into art. Favorite creative passions? "Art and music." Painting inspiration? "The hypocrisies of humans and the joys of life." How did the pandemic challenge your work as an artist? “I have painted very little during the pandemic. I take my inspiration from watching human interaction and there was none.” What artists inspire your art? “Van Gogh — he is a great student of the human condition.” Biggest challenge in your painting process? “I usually come up with a subject and start right in on painting it. Then my wife gets involved and gives great, sometimes unwanted, critique. She is a muse of a different order, injecting opinion on color, scale and style. This is why so many of my paintings take time to finish.”

Lucy Reiser Chapman Preferred Medium: mixed media lucyreiser.com
Delighted to call the mountains of Western North Carolina her home, Lucy, originally a Georgia native, has developed a thriving art business—both in-studio and online. Using an impressionist’s eye, Lucy strikes a colorful balance in her subjects: abstracts, birds and flowers, and landscapes. Using color, light and texture, her works express her sense for exploration and pop with moving vibrancy. She offers online painting courses in abstract and landscape impressionism and recently launched The Creative Space, a virtual platform dedicated to supporting new artists looking to learn, grow and launch their own businesses. At what time in your life did you start painting? “I started painting as soon as I was able to hold a paint brush. My family is very artistic and both of my grandmothers were/are professional painters, so it was always a part of the environment growing up. I'm very thankful creativity was encouraged and I had access to some wonderful teachers.” Lucy went on to receive a degree in studio art from Georgia College. What is the goal of your abstract work? “[My] abstract work is a reflection on the mystery in creation and goodness that does not always translate into words. The paintings are inspired by the colors and textures in everything from Vogue

to garden beds, as well as experiential elements of conversations, string music, travel and poetry. My role as an artist is to create paintings that transform your space into a respite where you feel thoroughly at home, invited into a field of imagination and rest.” What is the best way for people to work with you on a commission? “If you want your home to be defined by beauty, peace, comfort, goodness, imagination and rest, I will help you find or commission the perfect painting for you and your life.” How has your style changed over the years? “I'm not sure you could say my work has always been calm and peaceful—for most of my life I was creating art for assignments, so the subject matter or medium had to be pretty specific—the focus wasn't on finding my unique style and preferences so much as it was about learning techniques. Toward the end of college when I was starting to paint what I wanted to rather than what I was told to, I started out in extremely vibrant, stylized botanical illustration and loud abstracts. I still love those paintings, and even now the shift to what I currently paint feels like a natural progression from that point—even though it looks pretty different at face value.” What changed upon moving to NC?
Above: Far Hills by Lucy Reiser Chapman
“Moving to NC from Atlanta had a huge impact on my work simply because my surroundings changed so drastically. I realized how important my input is, and that it really does influence the output. I also tend to paint invitations into what I desire most, which is often an adventure into a beautiful landscape that feels like a breath of fresh air. I think we all need an invitation into a place filled with adventure, beauty and rest. So that's what I paint!”

Leslie Jeffery Preferred Medium: acrylic on canvas lesliejeffery.art
Originally from Jacksonville, Florida, Leslie now splits her studio time between Highlands and Largo, FL. She was drawn to art at a very young age and encouraged by her grandmother, an accomplished oil painter. Leslie graduated from Florida State University where she studied painting, art history and constructive design. As an active member in the artist world and many national and international organizations, Leslie’s work is widely exhibited and has received numerous regional awards in the past two years. Leslie professes to be a “quick and prolific” painter and on average finishes a painting within a couple of days. Her works are “exciting contemporary expressionistic … with bold, intriguing and exciting compositions.” Painting style? Abstract greatly influenced by early Abstract Expressionists like Cy Twombly, Mark Rothko, Joan Mitchell and Michael Goldberg. Inspiration? “More than anything, color!” What drives her artistry? “My works are about the process and feature texture, light or heavy; marks of all kinds; deep colors; patterned backgrounds; drips and various mediums. They convey energy, lyrical or frenetic. They convey mood, serious or lighthearted. I find the painting process exhilarating. I feel successful when I believe the last one is my best one. In every instance, they are thoughtful, approachable and engaging. I am intrigued with the comments and interpretations of my viewers.”

Below: I'm Having a Bad Dream and I Can't Wake Up by Leslie Jeffery
When asked, how did the pandemic challenge you and your work, Leslie shares that she painted subjects totally different from her norm of birds, waterfalls and blue sky, but rather churned through thought-provoking large abstracts with titles like Quarantine, Hibernation and I’m Having a Bad Dream
and I Can’t Wake Up. Meetings with collectors and gallerists were canceled along with exhibitions, opening receptions and galleries. “I had a large color two-month exhibition which had just been hung in a great venue. It was closed, the artwork remained up for four months and no one saw it.”

She is passionate about color and continues to explore her ability to use it in different mediums. Exhibiting at regional galleries, she splits time in both her studios in Highlands and Columbus, Georgia. Style: Impressionism. Favorite passions: Art and gardening. Favorite Medium: Oil on canvas, but also loves to experiment with pastels on paper and using a palette knife with her paint. “I also love art supplies and tend to use my paint very heavily with a palette knife—it reminds me of spreading icing on a cake!” Artistry background: As a child she learned painting and gardening from her mother, Julia O. Martin, a noted Georgia landscape designer. She went on to study art history and Italian at Mary Baldwin College and abroad in Perugia, Italy. Painting Inspiration: Private and public gardens, landscapes and still life. Continuing Studies: The Bascom Art Center in Highlands and The Wooden Boat School in Brooklin, Maine.
How did the pandemic affect your work? “I kept myself very busy during the pandemic and got into a routine—loved having my supplies delivered right to the front door!”

Real estate is in Parker Anderson’s blood. Literally. A third-generation real estate broker, Parker began his career in the industry while living in New Orleans and has been helping people buy and sell their homes for more than eight years. Before becoming a broker, Parker lived in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, and had a career in the outdoors. And, says Parker, it was the time he spent in Jackson Hole that led him to the career he has now. “Naturally,” says Parker, “I was drawn to the design of the many spectacular mountain homes there and before long I caught the bug for wanting to help people find their forever homes.” Born and raised in Rome, Georgia, Parker spent a lot of his youth in and around the Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forests where—similar to Wyoming and North Carolina—there are plenty of opportunities to enjoy the great outdoors. And says Parker, it’s being able to experience what Mother Nature offers in the greater Plateau region that makes it so special. “It’s truly magical,” he says. “As an avid hiker and fly fisherman, I love the outdoors and would recommend anyone who has the
chance to visit the Plateau, for even one day, take advantage of its breathtaking views and fresh air by finding a waterfall to hike to … or paddle across a nearby river or climb a mountain … just do something outside.” As for Parker, he and his wife Caroline welcomed their first child this past February, and right now, his main priority outside of real estate is being able to soak up as much time as possible with their growing family—they also have two English cream golden retrievers. But, he’s always ready to take care of his clients’ real estate needs. “Representing them to my highest ability and keeping their best interests in mind is bar none the most valuable aspect of this business,” he says. “My relationships with clients are not severed when a deal is done. I strive to keep those relationships in both a professional and a friendship capacity out of the office.” And it’s that kind of devotion and genuine attitude that has helped propel Parker in his career. “I am extremely patient, energetic and genuinely want my clients to be happy,” he says. “Purchasing a home is supposed to be a

Tucked away in the mountains of Highlands, North Carolina, Skyline Lodge is a newly renovated boutique property from the award-winning team at The Indigo Road Hospitality Group. Set to open in early summer 2021, Skyline Lodge marks Indigo Road’s first foray into the hotel industry with a full revitalization of the beloved 1920s-era lodge. AFTER MONT HS OF POSTPONEMENT, COUPLES ARE MORE T HAN READY FOR T HEIR BIG DAY by Kristin Bowen
EVENTS
Throughout history, there have been romantic, and oftentimes farcical stories, plays and movies written about brides—the blushing bride, the runaway bride, the jilted bride and even the mail-order bride. The latest trope highlights the 2021 “sequel bride,” a consequential title given to a bride whose big day was trumped by the pandemic. When the wedding march came to a screeching halt earlier last year, pandemonium ensued for thousands of brides, grooms and their families who had to cancel and reschedule after months and months of wedding preparations. As the year progressed many of the short-term postponements became long-term due to the nationwide shutdown. Bridal families eventually had to put off their “big day” plans indefinitely until a clear path to the aisle could be seen and re-imagined. Wedding planners, coordinators and vendors scrambled to assist in rearranging reservations and refunding deposits. But even in the darkest of days, and we know it was for so many, love perseveres, and in this case, many engaged couples decided to simplify things … perhaps tying the knot in a backyard with only immediate family attending.
Cue the “sequel bride.” Summer of 2021 is the time for the glorious sun to shine once again on mask-less and footloose bridal couples who are marching forward with their event plans, ready to “raise the roof” and celebrate in abundance. But just as the tide turns all things, there is a new tone to this year’s dream wedding and it is much more personal than ever before. At least for now, the old wedding culture dominated by a traditional ceremony, wedding jitters, hair-pulling stress caused by too many details and huge guest lists is a thing of the past. Wedding planner Shayna Bigazzi of Altaterra Events, a full-service boutique event company on the Highlands-Cashiers Plateau, says, “It is clear my sequel wedding clients want to party and skip the ceremony since most had a quiet ceremony last year. The party is their focus.” As Wedding Wire reports, it is all about creating a magical experience reinvented to reflect something more intimate and incorporating color and creativity. Sensory details like a custom food experience, a bespoke setting with imaginative decor, a classic neutral palette fused with bold, happy colors, a singular flower installation that just says “wow!” and eclectic lighting reign high

on couples’ wish lists. Postponements and elopements (a party of ten or fewer people) are continuing to lean on nature to provide a luminous outdoor setting as the backdrop. Bigazzi offers this thought as to the change in focus: "Our souls have been beaten down over the last year, and people want to be healed. Couples are very sensitive to their guests’ experiences. They want them to have a great time. I am passionate about my role to make every part of the event curated to create an exceptional experience.” “In the wake of the pandemic,” according to Mason Jones of the idyllic wedding venue Castle Ladyhawke, “we’re starting to see brides gravitate towards smaller weddings. They
aren’t inviting their seventh cousin twice-removed; they’re focusing on their closest family members and friends. They’re focusing more on the experience of their guests rather than a large, extravagant event; quality over quantity.” Mother of the bride, Susan Dyer, whose daughter recently married in May at Trillium Links and Lake Club in Cashiers, shares that the pandemic caused them to pause and rethink the wedding day, particularly the guest list. The original 250+ list was modified to create a more personal event inviting only the most important friends and family of the bride and groom. “I think that gave a much more intimate vibe to the overall wedding and took a lot of the pressure off to have everything ‘perfect,’” says Dyer.

Just when you think paring down invitees would reduce the cost of the reception, think again. Couples are choosing to spare no expense on the finer details, like the services of Abby Lynne of Abby Lynne Art, who offers live event painting and is on many WNC brides’ go-to list. “Live painting is not just a great way to immortalize the day, but to also entertain guests! To watch a whole painting done in a matter of hours can be fascinating,” boasts the talented artist. “I’m booking more and more micro weddings [1025 people] and elopements. Intimate settings reduced to the most important people in a couples’ life can really make for a cozy personal painting.” Trending themes evoke nostalgia and are high on beauty, color, and simplicity. Eco-friendly sit-
down dinners using local, sustainable resources hold center court. “Rustic elegance is in, and minimum décor is wanted,” reveals Mr. Jones. “Castle Ladyhawke is definitely a venue that can speak for itself!” For brides just now planning their future events, Bigazzi recommends booking as soon as possible due to the backlog of events that were postponed. She goes on to warn that vendors and venues can be challenging to secure at this time. “It would be wise to move planning to 2022, and shop around for vendors now.” When asked why couples are drawn to the Highlands-Cashiers Plateau to hold their memorable event, Bigazzi thoughtfully expresses, “This place, this area, is a naturally healing place. My soul is fed here, and I think others’ are too.”

ali. The name alone sounds exotic, yet few will become intimately connected to the magic this island evokes.
Search for Bali on the Internet and a much different portrait is painted than what you will see when you arrive. If it is purely magical beaches you seek, Bali may disappoint. If you have adopted the term “conscious travel,” then you will fall in love with the undeniably breathtaking architectural treasures and cultural awakenings this destination provides. Imagine the bustle of New York City combined with a Florida surf shop and a Mexican beach town, with some magic sprinkled in. The Hindu-influenced island intrigues with the daily practice of offerings. The Balinese spiritual ritual is a small box filled with flowers, incense, leaves, and often a cracker presented on the steps of entrances to stores, temples, statues, and homes. Representing gratitude or welcoming abundance, the daily offering is a reflection of the culture and simplicity of the island. Listed as the number one tourist destination on TripAdvisor, Bali is accepted by the Western world as the place for a yoga or meditation retreat and to the Eastern world as a tropic holiday. The lack
of tourism over the last year has taken its toll on this mystical country, but rumors say that Bali will be opening to tourists again as soon as July. The beaches near the southern half of the island are for surfing, where the Aussies escape to catch the waves. Yet, in my experience, Bali is more culture than postcard bliss. Many have seen the movie, Eat Pray Love, and associate Bali with finding love or peace, but the Bali portrayed in the movies is one you must seek in remote spots. This is not to say the island is not beautiful. Majestic palms and rice terraces are stunning, as is the active volcano Mount Kintamani. And I cannot forget to mention the hundreds of ornate temples that stir you emotionally, from sheer elegance and energetic attraction. Flying into the capital city of Denpasar will give you an urban perspective of Bali. With the island’s rapid tourism growth in the past ten to twenty years, getting around can take some time. Something you need to be aware of when traveling to Bali: if you keep an open mind, there is beauty everywhere you look.

JUST THAT LITTLE EXTRA Chuck Self grew up in a small village
within the boundaries of Kansas City, Missouri. A graduate of the University of Missouri, Chuck eventually landed in Atlanta and worked in the television industry for close to 30 years. During a summer vacation to the Highlands-Cashiers area, he and his wife Ann fell in love with the Blue Ridge Mountains and began searching for the perfect piece of land where they would build the home of their dreams. As for what lead Chuck to leave the hustle and bustle of the big city and the TV world and become a real estate agent, he says it all boils down to how he himself was treated as a potential home buyer. “As we bought or sold real estate throughout the years, sadly, I was frustrated more often than not at how my agent represented me,” says Chuck. “So when we decided to move here full-time, and since there are no television stations in Cashiers … I decided to get into real estate and am so happy I did.” This year marks Chuck’s tenth year as a real estate

broker and he credits his past experience for his current success. “I think, for me, my previous career was a huge plus—I negotiated large deals for television stations and ultimately Warner Brothers Television for many years, so I love that whole aspect of getting a deal put together. That, coupled with hard work, honesty, and making the whole buying or selling process as fun and painless as possible, is something that clients seem to appreciate. But, above all of that, my strongest quality is having the intuition to hire the best assistant, Riva Smith, any real estate agent could ever hope for. We make a good team.”
And if there’s one thing Chuck has learned throughout the past decade it’s that you’re never going to know everything. “Just when you think you have it figured out, the next deal will bring some new wrinkle you’ve never come across before,” says Chuck. “I enjoy learning, and you’re always learning in this business regardless of how good you are, or how long you’ve been doing it.” As for those thinking of following in his footsteps and making the plunge into a career within the real estate business, Chuck has this advice: “Underpromise and overdeliver for your clients. Be extraordinary instead of ordinary. The difference is just that little extra.”

Moving forward, Chuck plans to continue to deliver dreams and expand the large friendship base he says he’s developed with clients. So if you’re in the market to buy or sell on the Plateau, give Chuck and his team a call … but, if you’re just visiting the area like he and family did years ago, Chuck suggests taking a long hike in Panthertown Valley or a boat ride on beautiful Lake Glenville. “Just being outside and enjoying God’s creation, and all of the tremendous beauty we have up here,” says Chuck, “that’s the best thing you can do with your time spent on the Plateau.” Read on for a little bit more about Chuck Self and what makes him tick.

about me
Many denizens and regular visitors of the Highlands-Cashiers Plateau recognize Chris' voice the second they speak with him. That's not surprising, as Chris was the voice of the Plateau for a number of years as the morning show host on WHLC FM 104.5. Once you meet Chris, you'll certainly never miss him again, as his 6'9" stature literally makes him stand above the crowd. Chris was born in Germany and grew up in Washington, D.C. After studying at Georgia Tech and graduating from the University of Maryland, Chris moved to Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, where he lived for 22 years. In Canada, Chris worked as an on-air talent on numerous radio stations. He moved to Highlands in 2017 to take the job at WHLC. "I moved to the mountains to become the voice of Highlands, little did I know how much the Highlands-Cashiers Plateau would speak to me." An avid cook, Chris attended Le Cordon Bleu receiving a Certificat de Traiteur and loves sampling all the culinary delights the Highlands-Cashiers area has to offer. Chris quickly fell in love with the Highlands-Cashiers Plateau and decided he wanted to help other people enjoy our beautiful nature and live in our truly unique and amazing community. While he's no longer on the air, Chris still gets behind the mic as the in-game P.A. announcer for Highlands High School Basketball.
"Living over 500 miles away from our North Carolina property means we are extremely reliant on our realtor. Chris Duffy has been key to our investment in Cashiers. His knowledge of the local communities and the trends and issues affecting them make him invaluable to us." - ANTHONY AND BARBARA
"We recently purchased property in Highlands, NC with the assistance of Chris Duffy as our realtor. During these pandemic times we had to work with messaging and text services. Whenever we were able to visit the property, Chris provided detailed information to review. Chris was diligent to answer our questions and provide additional information. Calls were quickly returned. When we neared closing Chris worked with the attorney so that we could do a closing without traveling to Highlands. It was a great experience, we would recommend anyone to use Chris as their realtor." - GREG AND KAREN

"Rick listed our Lake Glenville home and within days had multiple cash offers, which turned into a bidding war. Rick’s professional guidance and constant communication provided us a smooth process during the transaction. Having an agent that lives on the lake as well has having an office on the lake proved to be invaluable. Rick went above and beyond in handling an abandoned well issue and septic permit discrepancy we were not aware of, he spent several weeks of his time sorting through the issues with the County and various vendors while we were out of state. Without question, Rick’s ability to take perspective buyers to visit lake properties via his boat made all the difference in getting maximum dollar for our home." - CHRIS AND MARY LYNN D.

Born and raised in Sarasota, Florida, Kevin was fortunate his family had the good sense to escape the heat and humidity of Southwest Florida summers and vacation in the cool mountain air of Western North Carolina. Spending time in the Highlands-Cashiers area since he was a young boy led to a genuine appreciation for the miles of hiking trails, gentle lakes, and towering waterfalls, all of which add to the allure of the Plateau landscape. After graduating from college, Kevin struck out for the open plains of the West where he spent the next six and a half years developing and managing multiple companies in the oil and gas industry in North Dakota. After enduring numerous long winters, the allure of his boyhood summer home proved too strong and, after marrying his wife Lindsey in June of 2019, they moved permanently to the Highlands-Cashiers area. Once settled in their new home, Kevin obtained his North Carolina real estate license with the goal of sharing his love of Plateau-style living. When not advocating for the lifestyle, Kevin is an avid outdoorsman and can be found hiking with his beautiful wife, fishing, kayaking, playing a round of golf, or simply sitting on the back deck admiring the views.
"Kevin Koach is a very professional, reliable and trustworthy real estate agent who went above and beyond to find my dream home and assist in the closing which was a little difficult especially being from out of state. He was very organized. He was always available for questions or requests. I would not hesitate to use Kevin as your real estate agent if you are in the market for a new home in the Sapphire/Cashiers area." - STACY KOSCINSKI
"I knew working with Kevin Koach was going to be a terrific experience and comfortable fit from the first time he and I spoke on the phone. Kevin is extremely diligent and is an excellent communicator, which was essential since we live more than four hours away. We find Kevin to be a true professional in every sense of the word. His local knowledge of the area helped us immensely and quickly allowed us to focus on what was truly important to us. He was always available to meet us in person, or for a phone call at our convenience. Our experience was nothing but a pleasure because of Kevin’s expertise and demeanor. The most important thing someone should know before they start their search for a home is what kind of a lifestyle they would like to have. You don’t just want the right home … you want the right home in the right community. Some clients want a cabin on a large property or a lake. Others want the community and social life that a country club community provides. Both are great, but a very important personal choice. The most valuable thing I have learned while being a broker is that you don’t sell real estate … you help people fall in love. How fun is that!
What are your goals for the year 2021? My goals for 2021 are to help as many people as possible find their dream home on the Plateau. (I also plan to improve my tennis serve!)
What qualities differentiate you from other agents? My past sales and marketing experience, combined with my passionate love of our area helps make me an excellent agent. What differentiates me is that I care more about making the right deal than making a deal.

successful buyout. She and her family became full-time residents of Cashiers, NC, in 2008 after visiting the area and falling in love with the mountain lifestyle. Jodi’s strengths lie in her sales and marketing skills and the ability to work with a diversified group of people, as well as in her passion for real estate. Her many years of sales, marketing, and intuitive personal relations have helped bring buyers and sellers together successfully time and time again.
" We have been exploring various areas to buy a mountain home in North Carolina for the past two years. Several friends suggested we look into the Cashiers/Highlands area. This spring we contacted Jodi Moore after seeing her name on several listings in the area. We had several conversations about what we were looking for, then scheduled a day together. Jodi had done an extensive search and set up several home tours. She took us to different communities and we found her to be very informative about the area. We are from out of state and found her knowledge and experience invaluable. We spent three days with Jodi and we found a beautiful home in the Sapphire/Burlingame community. Jodi provided us with details of the community and arranged a tour of the country club. We worked together to put an offer together and after some back and forth, our offer was accepted. Jodi made all the arrangements for all the home inspections and referred us to other tradesmen and other professionals in the area to help us complete the transaction. We recently closed on our mountain home and are very excited to move in!!! It has been many years since we purchased a home. The most important aspects that Jodi delivered on include: regular communication, responsiveness, knowledge of the area, and a strong network of colleagues. With this said, we strongly recommend Jodi Moore to all prospective homebuyers in the Sapphire area." - CHRIS MEYER
Great partner for home shopping! Patient, very knowledgeable, and a good listener. Highly recommend. -RICK & DONNA WRABEL

Raised in Dublin, Georgia, Katie Adams Nicholson graduated from college and moved to Atlanta in 2000. During her seven years at a real estate investment and management company there, she worked in the acquisitions department, seeking retail and commercial facilities in New York, Boston, San Francisco, and Atlanta.
about me
After hearing about the Highlands-Cashiers Plateau for years while living in Atlanta, she took a leap of faith and moved in 2008 to work on a mixed-use project in downtown Cashiers. Although the project never came to fruition, Katie had fallen in love with the area and never left. Katie met her husband in 2009, a local general contractor who was born and raised in the area. She spent the next 10 years working at the Chinquapin management office and was hands-on with the development and growth of the community, becoming a top-selling agent with a focus on land and new home build packages. With a passion for the outdoors and the mountain lifestyle, Katie loves helping clients find their perfect fit. Katie attributes her success to working closely with clients throughout the entire process, from learning about the area to finding their ultimate home, as well as handling the sale or construction of their home. Katie spends her free time hiking with her dogs.
“...My wife and I have bought and sold dozens of properties and homes ... [Katie] clearly has both buyer and seller’s interests in mind on the three transactions we did over the last two years. I am convinced by the outcome she did everything she could to get us a very fair deal. What you also need to know is Katie seems to genuinely want to know you not just make a buck. She puts the boots on to find survey pins on vacant lots and will just walk with you to get to know you so to better understand what you need. In that handful of my favorite realtors, buy or sell side, it was the do-whatever-it-takes with experience that finally seals the deal for us. Katie proved to be creative, thoughtful, and diligent while truly getting to know us. In Jackson and surrounding counties, it would never occur to me not to seek out Katie to represent us in our future real estate endeavors. ” - TERRY RENOUX
"When we met Katie, we knew instantly that we would not only do business together, but that we would become lifelong friends. We just couldn't find a more honest, hard working, quality person in ANY walk of life. Love her, love her, love her!"

RAY TRINE
about me
BROKER | 828-506-8520 | RAYTRINE .NCLIVING .COM
Ray’s passion for all things real estate blossomed early in his life. After graduating with an accounting degree from the University of North Florida in 1971, his real estate career was launched immediately. Initially employed by Florida National Bank’s holding company, he later became CFO of American Federal Savings and Loan, financing homes and commercial properties and working on building and development projects. He quickly learned that he belonged out in the field making things happen, rather than crunching numbers in an office. By 1982, the Trine family included five children, five dogs and four cats. His quest for a better quality of life brought him to the Highlands-Cashiers Plateau, where he immediately recognized what an idyllic existence it would provide. He packed up his entire menagerie and moved from an oceanfront home in Atlantic Beach, FL to his newly acquired farm in Glenville, NC. His family continued to grow, expanding to include llamas, donkeys, cows, goats, sheep, turkeys and chickens. Now with seven children and thirteen grandchildren, he knows he made the right choice! Once ensconced in North Carolina, Ray wasted no time earning his North Carolina Broker’s license. He went to work for one of the oldest real estate firms in the area, V.C. Smith Real Estate, which he bought outright two years later. He soon made his mark as the number one real estate office in sales and listings in the Cashiers area for many years running. Ray proceeded to shape the area with his active involvement in the sale of land tracts, as well as the development of many residential communities such as Bald Rock, Summerhill, Glenshore, Trillium, Bear Lake Preserve, Bridge Creek, Glen Laurel, and Glen Pointe. With such a large family, community involvement was also important to Ray. He has been President of the Blue Ridge School PTA, elected to the Jackson County School Board, and served on the Cashiers Chamber of Commerce, Friends of Lake Glenville and many private community boards and architectural review committees. Coupled with his dedicated community involvement, Ray’s background of accounting, property development, and real estate sales has provided him with priceless insights into this unique area. Ray is the quintessential guide to the Highlands-Cashiers Plateau, offering personal experience, countless fascinating local narratives and a seemingly limitless knowledge of mountain living. Ray is a seasoned professional who brings enthusiasm, vision and over 45 years of experience to the team at Silver Creek Real Estate Group. Ray is licensed in both North Carolina and South Carolina.
“My wife and I have moved many times in the last 30 years and dealt with a lot of agents. We have now dealt with Ray on many transactions and believe strongly that he is by far the best. His integrity, professionalism, and knowledge of the mountain market are unparalleled. We are glad we found him and more so appreciate his warm smile and good nature. He is the very best. If you are looking for a superior real estate agent in the mountains ... he’s your guy.” - WILLIAM MONIE
