A LETTER FROM OUR PRESIDENT
As the leaves on the trees begin to change, my anticipation grows for fall. It's an exhilarating time in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Western North Carolina, not just because the natural beauty of the area seems heightened with the addition of brilliant shades of red, flaming amber and gold, not only because we know that with the coming of fall, there are those who are discovering our little slice of paradise for the first time. They will hear about a local festival or the extravaganza of autumn leaves and make the drive up the mountain to have their lives forever changed. They may go for a leisurely boat ride on one of our many mountain lakes, hike a winding trail through a colorful ancient forest, don a pair of waders and cast their line into a peaceful stream, take in a breathtaking view from the ninth hole of a championship golf course, or go on a quest to find the most spectacular waterfall. Some may be so moved by their visit that they will choose to put down roots of their own here. This issue of NC Living Magazine is all about the Highlands-Cashiers Plateau, the incredibly welcoming destination that it is. Let us know how our brokers can make your stay here more memorable. We love to hear from you! At Silver Creek Real Estate Group, our independent firm is comprised of full-time brokers empowered by decisions made at the local level, not by an executive in another part of the country. Our unrivaled marketing platform is internationally recognized, garnering such awards as “Best Website” and “Best Visual Design” from the Leading Real Estate Companies of the World. While our vision is expansive, our focus is centered around where our passion lies, providing the best client experience on the Highlands-Cashiers Plateau.

The Chattooga Life WO R D S BY KA R A AD D Y | P H OTO S B Y AS H L EY L EE
Linda Pridgen wasn’t always a real estate broker. For the first 14 or so years of her career, she was a schoolteacher. She easily draws parallels between the two professions.
a sports program at The Chattooga Club. After a season of playing tennis and enjoying time with friends on the Plateau, Linda prepared to return to the Sunshine State for the new school year.
“Both jobs are about enjoying the process, carefully listening to what they want and need, and guiding them along,” she says. “And then celebrating with them.”
“That’s when I was asked to serve as club manager at The Chattooga Club,” she explains. “So, I took a one-year leave of absence from teaching school to see if I liked it.”
The former first-grade teacher also jokes about the differences. “Instead of celebrating the loss of a tooth and a visit from the Tooth Fairy, we’re celebrating the sale or purchase of a home.”
One year turned into two decades at the highlydesirable, private community she calls home. Through the years she has served as its general manager and on-site real estate broker.
Whether teaching or selling real estate, Linda says the Cashiers area has been a constant in her life. Growing up in West Palm Beach, Florida, her family would spend cool summers in Cashiers. After graduating from Florida Atlantic University, she returned to vacation with her own family, usually at High Hampton.
Eventually, she decided she wanted to “branch out and have more exposure” for her real estate business. After looking at other companies, she chose Silver Creek Real Estate Group about six years ago.
Eventually, they purchased a home—first in Cedar Creek Racquet Club, then on Whiteside Cove Road— then built in The Chattooga Club. They would travel back and forth from Vero Beach, Florida. “We had the beach in Vero and the mountains in Cashiers, so we truly had the best of both worlds,” she says. One summer, her late husband was asked to start
“I liked Jochen (Lucke, Silver Creek’s president) so much after talking with him. I knew that’s where I wanted to be.” These days, Linda lists and sells property throughout the Highlands-Cashiers Plateau, serving clients with whom she has built relationships through the years as well as new ones. She still plays tennis, along with croquet, and she is an active volunteer with the Albert Carlton-Cashiers Community Library and The Church of the Good Shepherd.

Opposite page: Linda and best-selling author Kristy Woodson Harvey have an evening glass of wine on The Chattooga Club patio. This page: A day at The Chattooga Club always includes a round of tennis.
How do you spend your free time? I play croquet and sometimes tennis at The Chattooga Club. I also read, hike (my favorites are Panthertown and Whiteside), enjoy long picnics, plays and movies. I just saw the musical “Ring of Fire” at Highlands Playhouse. What is something that most people don’t know about you? I know how to play several instruments I learned as a child: the accordion, bassoon and drums. I still can play the piano. Also, I was a majorette in high school and have trophies from twirling competitions in my attic. What is the most important thing someone should do or know before starting their search for a home on the Plateau?
One of her greatest joys is spending time with her son and three grandchildren who love to visit from Orlando, Florida, especially during the Christmas holidays. Linda shared a bit more with NC Living Magazine when she sat down with us. What qualities differentiate you from other agents? I began visiting here with my parents during the summer. We would stay a couple of weeks each year. And now, I’ve lived here a long time in different communities. So, I know the area and a lot of people well.
I suggest they do their due diligence and get to know the area really well. Know what kinds of entertainment and activities they want to do. Make sure they like the weather. Compare notes from one community to another to make sure it is right for them—a good fit. Choose an agent they like who fits what they need. Favorite design trend of the moment? The lighter and brighter, more contemporary, style. I just re-decorated my own home and everything is white and bright. If someone is only spending one day on the Plateau, what would you say is the number one thing they should do? I recommend they take a hike up one of our most gorgeous landmarks, Whiteside Mountain. It’s a moderate hike, perfect for a couple or a family.

Spend some time at the top; you can see everything from there. Or, take the easy drive to Dry Falls and Bridal Veil Falls in Highlands.
Favorite place to travel? California. I love visiting wine country, but I also love the other end of the state. From San Diego to San Francisco, there’s so much diversity.
What is your favorite season on the Plateau? Spring, because I love when it starts warming up and you see the new green color, watch it fill in and the flowers pop up. And that’s when people begin coming back. Currently, what is your favorite Plateau restaurant?
First concert? Herman’s Hermits in Ft. Wayne, Indiana, in the summer. Best concert you ever attended?
Next to dining at The Chattooga Club, which is fabulous, I have to say Ristorante Paoletti in Highlands.
Elvis Presley during his heyday. I saw him at the Miami Beach Convention Center. We purchased cheap tickets at the last minute but got moved to about the fourth row.
What is a nonprofit in the area about which you are passionate?
Last book you read?
Friends of the Library. I serve on its Board of Directors. What is the most valuable thing you’ve learned while working as a broker? This profession is filled with wonderful, nice people. Build friendships. It’s fun!
Moby Dick. Actually, I’m still reading it. It’s a difficult book to read but I’m enjoying it. We have a gift shop in The Chattooga Club and it offers classic books with beautiful covers. I had never read it so I thought I would.

Productivity App Roundup
NC Living Editor + Designer Zena Lynch shares her favorite apps for staying organized
I have a surprising number of productivity apps on my devices. I've tried nearly all of the popular ones through the years—some have stuck around and some haven't. The ones that have stood the test of time are aesthetically pleasing (I am a graphic designer after all) and, of course, are useful enough to be a part of my daily life. Never downloaded a productivity app before? If you often wake up at three in the morning with the sensation of your brain feeling too full, it may be time to find an organizational system that works for you. For those who are more into the pen-and-paper approach, I highly recommend the Bullet Journal Method (www.bulletjournal.com).
My Mind www.mymind.com | $119/year
"No folders, no collections, no wasted time organizing." Of all the apps I’ve listed, this one is the most beautiful and requires the least effort. I wish that whoever designed this app designed every UX, ever. A simple and effective capturing tool, the app serves as a brain dump that AI sorts and tags for you, creating easily searchable categories. There is no iPad app which is nearly a dealbreaker for me. There's no desktop version either, and the website requires Internet. The hefty price tag was also a major hindrance to me incorporating it into my everyday life, although the data privacy and absence of ads help to justify the cost.
Tody
Forest
www.todyapp.com | $6.99
www.forestapp.cc | $2.99
"The Tody app estimates indicators for tasks, measuring the actual need of doing them."
"Forest is an app that helps you stay focused on the important things in life."
This may be the ugly duckling of the bunch, but what it lacks in trendy gradients and pleasing typography, it makes up for in usefulness. I used to flit around my home asking myself questions like, "Why did I come in this room? Did I give my dog her heartworm pill yet this month?" Now, I get home from work and do the five or six things the app tells me need to be done most urgently before I work out and make dinner.
Grow trees with the power of your concentration. Limit your screentime and watch your digital garden grow, but if you can’t resist picking up your phone, your tree withers and dies. You can grow alone or with friends, unlocking new species along the way. Over one million real trees have been planted by the Forest app on behalf of its users.
Equally useful for adults and kids alike, chores can be assigned to just one person or set to alternate between family members.
Notion www.notion.so | free and paid plans
"The all-in-one workspace for your notes, tasks, wikis, and databases." The latest trend in productivity and academia, this app is purported to serve as a Wikipedia for your life. From grocery lists to your glasses prescription, this app can hold it all and is infinitely customizable. The app may be the most arduous to set up because it's so limitless, but if you are like me and have your books organized by spine color, you may enjoy the process. Pages can be shared between family members or colleagues.
Open www.o-p-e-n.com | $20/month
"A place to come to your senses— meditation, music, breathwork and movement awaken body and mind to bring you to the present moment." I can’t believe how long my meditation streak has lasted with the help of Open. More than just an app, Open creates the feeling of community with friendly teachers dressed monochromatically on sets seemingly inspired by James Turrell. Both live and prerecorded classes (varying in difficulty and length) are available and encompass three categories: Breathe, Meditate and Move.

San Jose Del Cabo, Mexico—Named after an all-powerful deity of the original inhabitants of Southernmost Baja California, Casa Niparaya creates an uncommon mold for anyone fortunate enough to take possession of this striking home. Architectural wooden beams, textured concrete walls and over-sized marble slabs melt with just enough natural stone and tile to jolt the visitor back into the reality that they are still, in fact, in Mexico. No other home in Los Cabos has been built with equal thought, care and integrity. Casa Niparaya uses wide open spaces and a sequence of modern features and custom furniture that breeze through accomplished landscaping and bespoke outdoor lighting that blurs to the community of Querencia, as it boldly sets the canvas for the home. Querencia itself provides 1,800 acres of cherished
land that connects the arid wildflowers of the Southern Baja desert with the crashing surf of the Sea of Cortez. A 58,000 square-foot, five-star clubhouse has established itself above and beyond similar communities and provides the stepping-off point for a Tom Fazio-designed golf experience and an array of amenities. A yoga pavilion, state-of-the-art fitness center, fine dining, business services, kids and teen facilities and a stunning collection of pools and Jacuzzis complete the community’s focal point. The newest addition to Querencia is a beach club featuring casual dining, a fire pit and private cabanas that sit on a perfect and lonely Sea of Cortez cove. This property remains a fitting tribute to the Pericú, an ancient culture who believed in an all-powerful master named Niparaya, creator of heaven and earth.

HISTORY
Listen carefully for the long-ago voices of children playing in the yard. And experience the love story preserved in the Zachary-Tolbert House. If you’ve spent any time in Cashiers, North Carolina, you’ve no doubt driven past the Zachary-Tolbert House countless times on your way to Silver Run Falls, Whitewater Falls or Atlanta. It’s one of the few traces left of those early days in Cashiers Valley. Enter the grounds of the Zachary-Tolbert House, and your mind goes back in time. Asphalt roads change to gravel, then to packed dirt with planks over the mud holes, then to the narrow hunting trails used by the Cherokee. Forests thick with oaks and maples crowd close. You hear birdsong and rustling breezes. Round a curve and a meadow bursting with wildflowers surprises your eyes. Deer and wild turkeys roam by. It becomes easy to imagine it is 1832 in the Cashiers Valley.
Mordecai Zachary was nine years old that year when he arrived in the area. His family was one of the first pioneers to settle in the valley. Working alongside their father John Zachary, Mordecai and his brothers learned pioneer skills: clearing, cabin building, crop planting and hunting. As Mordecai grew, he added carpentry, stone masonry and brick making. In 1842 John Zachary deeded plots of land to his sons. Mordecai immediately began clearing his land along the Chattooga River. The nearby springs would be his source of pure water. He felled trees, turned them into lumber at the family sawmill, and used them to construct the Zachary-Tolbert House, today the jewel of the Cashiers Historical Society.
HISTORY
Clockwise from above: The family wrote important milestones on the wooden walls. Since the 1920s, the Cashiers Historical Society has worked to preserve buildings at least 50 years old in central Cashiers. An heirloom garden at Colonel John's Cabin offers a glimpse of early pioneer life in Cashiers Valley.
HISTORY
Mordecai built the house in the Greek Revival Style, unusual in the remote mountains of North Carolina during pioneer times. But he had studied the popular architectural styles of the era as he was perfecting his building skills and taking them to an artisan level. The house features a low-hipped roof, a cornice lined with decorative trim, a central porch that reaches the full height of the two-story building, and a decorative door with a transom accented with plaster designs. Inside, a central hallway leads to two rooms on each side. Four more rooms grace the upstairs floor. Using only hand tools, Mordecai created a house that truly is a work of art. Perhaps Mordecai's motivation was more than his artisan pride. While the house was under
construction, he began courting Elvira Evelina Keener. She lived in nearby Quallatown where her father was a Methodist missionary who served the Cherokee people. Elvira taught in the school he opened and she was able to fluently speak the Cherokee language. As the house went up, the love story of Mordecai and Elvira also grew. When the pair married on February 18, 1852, Mordecai gave Elvira the house as a wedding present. He completed the gift by building all the furniture in the house. Crafted in Southern Plain Style, the pieces feature simple, yet artistic, lines. During the next 22 years, the family grew to include 13 children. All learned the Cherokee language from their mother. Flora Jane (born in 1856) recalled in her autobiography the happiness she felt as she helped on the farm, climbed the apple trees, pretended in the playhouse, and entertained visitors. And the visitors did come. The house was open to travelers along the Tuckasegee River and Keowee Turnpike. South Carolinians would summer in the home to savor the cool mountain climate. Some came to hunt or fish. The guests were educated and knew current affairs. The conversations during these visits likely brought excitement to the children and parents alike. The land around the house was a working farm that provided for the large family’s needs. Mordecai would sometimes work as a builder for others and even served as postmaster in the 1850s. However, life in the beautiful home became difficult after the Civil War because Mordecai chose to side with the

survived. Family milestones documented in graffiti still remain in the house.
To ease the tension, Mordecai sold the treasured home in 1873 to Armistead Burt of South Carolina for $700. After this purchase, the house remained a summer vacation home. William Henry Parker bought the property in 1881 for $1,100. Then in 1909, Robert Red Tolbert purchased it for $1,650.
After Thomas Dowden acquired the home in 1997, he soon donated it to the Cashiers Historical Society. It was then developed into a museum and placed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Through the changes in ownership, the house went through minimal changes in appearance. The interior remained unpainted, and electricity, modern plumbing and central heat were never added. Many of the windows still have the original glass. Even the furniture that Mordecai created

very other summer in Cashiers, the Joy Garden Tour makes accessible some of the area’s most spectacular, private outdoor spaces to those who desire an exclusive visit. Benefiting The Village Green, this year’s tour, themed “The Wonders of Waterfalls and Wildflowers” and held in mid-July, featured four stunning gardens and plenty of inspiration for gardeners of all levels of experience. Responding to ongoing health concerns, organizers modified this year’s event by offering private and semi-private tours to patron-benefactors. Additionally, The Village Green offered a virtual tour and video of the gardens. A highlight of this year’s tour was “Ushuata,” an elegant Sapphire estate with exquisite
gardens, exclusively marketed by Silver Creek Real Estate Group. Encompassed by panoramic views of Bald Rock and Lake Fairfield, its Cherokee name means “where the earth ends and dreams begin.” A garden paradise conceived by Mary Palmer Dargan and maintained by Edmund Taylor, its landscape design was guided by the owner’s desire to create a sustainable environment that integrates with the emerging architecture. Terraced gardens incorporating more than 500 species and varieties of trees, shrubs, bulbs, perennials, and ferns—many rare and choice— live among meandering, fieldstone paths. Species of mountain swallowtails, fritillaries buckeyes, and painted ladies add to the Edenic atmosphere. Beckoning an array of wildlife, its formal and natural elements add interest as

The fun also included a book signing event with author James Farmer and a patron party, “Supper at The Green.”
In addition to the tours, more than 30 vendors were part of the Garden Shops, open to the public at The Village Green Commons. The boutique experience offered shoppers garden and floral items as well as distinctive gourmet food, clothing, jewelry, antiques, and home accessories.

T
he chatty crowd gathers beside the wooden deck at the Village Green Commons, patiently waiting for the clock to strike 2 p.m. Staged a few steps above them on this bright and breezy Wednesday, a dozen local growers and producers put the final touches on their table displays of beautiful vegetables, eggs, homemade jellies and jams and other fresh produce. A woman in a floppy sun hat hoists a leafy, blooming potted plant and bunches of cut flowers from the back of her van, making her way to the porch. This is Cashiers’ Green Market. Held each Wednesday afternoon between early April and late October, the Green Market attracts those who produce locally grown goods as well as those who appreciate their work. Quality controls are strict: Each vendor
must also be the grower or producer of all the products they sell, and the offerings must be produced within a 150-mile radius of Cashiers. “It’s one of our most popular events,” says Ann Self, executive director of The Village Green. “We have regular customers with longstanding relationships with the vendors.” They return, she believes, not only because the food is fresh and healthy but also because of the social and relationship-building opportunities. “That’s the thing I love the most about the market, that it is so community-centric. Our vendors are a family. It’s a beautiful expression of community.” Now in its fifth season, the Green Market’s customer base has grown exponentially, from an average of 100 to 150 customers each week

through 2017 to more than 450 today. One of the main drivers, Self says, was the pandemic, during which people discovered the market as they searched for safe ways to purchase fresh food. Created almost 30 years ago, The Village Green began as a preservation effort under the threat of unwanted commercial development at the Cashiers crossroads. Eventually, the protected area grew to more than 13 acres of lush gardens, relaxing walking paths, intriguing public art and an expansive playground, providing a true sensory experience and a “park for the people.” Today’s scene is most welcome—a breath of fresh, mountain air. Like other venues, The Village Green navigated 2020 by modifying schedules and plans. Some events, such as the Cashiers Plein Air Festival, continued with a scaled-down number of artists
painting on its lawn (as well as a limited number of other venues around town). Its cooking and nature programs migrated to the virtual world. But organizers canceled its signature summer event, Groovin’ on the Green, the concert series that traditionally brought together hundreds of villagers and their friends with picnic baskets of food and wine to its grassy lawn each Friday night. And the sounds of children’s laughter fell silent at Village Play, its children’s playground. But Self sees the silver lining. “We were able last year to focus on embracing the core purpose of The Village Green—and that’s to serve the community.” Instead of its usual programming, The Village Green served as a host site for free COVID testing and offered its parking area and Wi-Fi to area students learning remotely.

Just like the blooms on its perennials,The Village Green is now experiencing a season of renewal and rebirth. Its newly completed Commons Hall, a 5,800-squarefoot indoor venue for year-round programs and private events, has opened its doors, welcoming authors, horticulturalists and other speakers as well as those who want to meet them. StoryWalk, an installation along its pebbled paths, is in place. The biennial Joy Garden Tour took place in July. (See related article, p. 30.) And Concerts on the Commons, a modified version of Groovin’ on the Green, began on July 4. Operating on a non-profit budget in a post-pandemic world, The Village Green is mindful of its limited resources and the weather risks associated outdoor events. So, instead of passing a basket for donations as in the past, it is charging a nominal $5 ticket price for the concerts.
“We wanted to be able to provide concerts because it’s such a tradition,” Self says. “Coming out of the pandemic, people are craving live music. They’re relaxed and reconnecting with people they haven’t seen in more than a year.” The Village Green of Cashiers hosted a new event, “Village Crawl,” on July 16. Featuring live music on two stages, pop-up boutiques, a wine tasting and food trucks, the free event was held in coordination with the biennial Joy Garden Tour. Cashiers shops extended their business hours and offered special promotions, encouraging visitors to stroll along the refurbished Cashiers Greenway Ramble. The Village Green is accessed by Highway 64 West or Frank Allen Road near Highway 107. For more information, visit www.villagegreencashiersnc.com.

record as a top producer in the HighlandsCashiers Plateau market.
Early in his career, Dan joined Silver Creek Real Estate Group in 2008 as one of its original agents. He remembers his first encounters with Founder/President Jochen Lucke.
Client Merryl Bernstein understands the reasons for his success.
“I met him at a couple of open houses. Then, I had a meeting with him and immediately appreciated his tenacity and vision and what he wanted to create. There was something about him that made me think he was going to do big things. It just seemed like it would be a winning team to be a part of.” Dan values authentic connections, whether with his family and friends, clients, co-workers—or even the land. It’s part of the reason he chose Silver Creek 13 years go. “I felt like it was a place where we would have good synergy and be as much of a family as a team. And we’d be in it together, not just a few individuals working at the same office.” Today, Dan has a solid reputation as a straightshooter, with a devoted client base, a history of giving back to the community, and a consistent
"We could not have asked for a better person to help us find our vacation home in the Cashiers area. Dan was very knowledgeable and helped us maximize our limited search time to focus on those items which were important to us. His local knowledge was vital and appreciated as we were new to the area. He guided us through every step of the process and made sure that every 't' was crossed and 'i' dotted. He did whatever was needed to protect our interest—not just make a sale." An advocate for animals and the environment, Dan served on the board of directors for the Cashiers-Highlands Humane Society and the Jackson-Macon Conservation Alliance and now serves on the Highlands-Cashiers Board of Realtors. He has also volunteered with Big Brothers Big Sisters. The mountains have been a part of Dan’s life

since his summertime family vacations as a child; he’s always known it's where he belongs. He was in his 20s when he spent “every dollar" he had to purchase the land he cultivated into a small, thriving mountaintop farm that he now shares with his girlfriend Nora and two rescue dogs. NC Living Magazine recently spent a few moments with Dan, digging deeper—pun intended—into the Plateau life he loves. What brought you to the Highlands-Cashiers Plateau? I wanted a simpler life, out of the city. I used to visit the mountains on family vacations as a kid and decided in the mid-90s to come back and see if it had the same feel and draw as an adult. How long have you been a professional real estate broker? I got my real estate license in 2004, so 17 years now. How long have you been with Silver Creek Real Estate Group? Since the beginning—13 years. I'm proud to be one of the original agents with the company. Why did you choose Silver Creek Real Estate Group? I knew from day one we would be a powerhouse and look at us now. I went “all in” and I’m so glad I did. What are your goals for the next year/12 months? Professionally, my goal is continued success in helping my clients achieve their real estate goals, true to our company motto of building relationships and delivering dreams. Personally, my goal is to more fully enjoy some downtime with friends and family and to take in more of what the Plateau has to offer. I’ve been here a long time, and there’s a lot to enjoy that I don’t take advantage of nearly often enough.
What qualities differentiate you from other agents? I try to talk less and listen more. As well versed as I am in the market and the area, it’s impossible to know what’s right for a particular person or family without taking the time to listen and understand their dreams and goals. How do you spend your free time? In nature! I love some downtime to hike and camp—my girlfriend and me, our dogs, and maybe a close friend or two—enjoying all Mother Nature offers. I spend time cultivating my orchard, gardens and greenhouse, and doing a little front porch sitting. What is something that most people don’t know about you? I’ll share three things. One, I have Viking ancestry. Two, I lived in Mr. Rogers' neighborhood as a young child in Pittsburgh, specifically Squirrel Hill. My parents would occasionally chat with him at the local bagel shop. Third, I traveled Europe in the early 1990s with a carnival sideshow. OK, so the last one is absolutely not true, but it sounds interesting. The first two are true, though! What is the most important thing someone should know before starting their search for a home on the Plateau? This area has so much to offer, and each neighborhood and community is different. It’s important to explore and seek out the situation that matches your lifestyle and preferences. So, slow down and take your time; it’s a big decision. Favorite design trend of the moment? Mountain transitional, where the classic farmhouse meets industrial and mid-century modern. It’s elegant, yet masculine—clean lines with a touch of retro.
Dan's beloved dog Petey passed away in August 2021. Dan was comforted by the Dr. Seuss quote: "Don't cry because it's over. Smile because it happened."
If someone is spending only one day on the Plateau, what is the number one thing they should do? Get outside! While there are so many wonderful restaurants and shops and other places of interest, the true magic of the Plateau is the outdoors. And when it is time to shop, be sure to explore the vast talents of our local artisans. What is your favorite season on the Plateau and why? I love spring because everything comes back to life—the rejuvenation. And there’s something romantic about the fall… as the leaves start to change, the sweaters come out. Chilly nights call for sipping a warm beverage next to a roaring fire, finding some time to relax after a busy summer and gearing up for holiday festivities. Currently, what is your favorite Plateau restaurant? While I think we’re all excited about the impending opening of Happs Place, my all-time favorite is The Orchard. I worked there years ago when I was just beginning in real estate, and the owners are like family. So, it holds a special place in my heart. What nonprofit in the area you are passionate about? I love animals and have always had rescue dogs of my own. So, the Cashiers-Highlands Humane Society immediately comes to mind. I’m honored to be a former board member and I can’t say
enough about the wonderful management, employees, and volunteers who provide such incredible care for the animals living there. On another note—nothing makes you appreciate our local volunteer Fire Department like your home catching on fire! I’m forever grateful. What is the most valuable thing you’ve learned while working as a broker? How to read people and understand the differences in personalities. It allows me to cater my services to any individual I work with. Real estate is so much more than listing and showing properties. There’s a human element to it, where you take on the role of adviser, counselor and mediator.

What advice would you give a new real estate agent?
What is the best concert you’ve ever attended?
Preview, preview, preview! You’ve got to know your inventory and you have to understand the different communities and what they offer. Represent your buyer or seller by always putting their interests first. Live by a code of honesty and integrity and the deals will follow.
Old Dominion in Asheville. Their music is fantastic and the band members are great guys. Even better? My brother is their videographer, so I got the VIP experience, and that made it an unforgettable evening.
What is a crazy real estate story you can share? While working at the office one weekend, someone walked in looking to purchase property. Within a month, we closed on around $8 million. It can pay to work weekends! What was your first concert? The Rolling Stones. It was pretty amazing to see such an epic band as my first concert experience!
What is the last book you read or a book recommendation? The Foxfire series is fun, with their focus on true mountain living—the way our grandparents lived it. It’s neat to recognize local areas and landmarks since it's set in the area. Another is Firefly Lane. It’s silly and fun and probably wasn’t written for a 40-something guy, but it's a great escape from reality.

Parker Anderson Broker | 828-200-2695 | www.parkeranderson.ncliving.com
Hailing from Northwest Georgia, Parker is a third-generation realtor who is passionate about creating bonds with his clients. He spent six years focusing on and helping to grow the booming residential market in New Orleans before relocating to Cashiers. Parker is extremely steadfast in assisting and representing both buyers and sellers with any of their real estate needs throughout the Highlands-Cashiers Plateau. As a realtor in the North Carolina mountains, Parker is able to combine his passion for real estate with his love of the outdoors, fine dining, and community involvement. He is no stranger to the mountains, as he was a frequent visitor to Southern Appalachia throughout his childhood and lived in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, for a period of his adult life. Parker's wife, Caroline, was both a camper and counselor at Camp Merrie-Woode in Sapphire for 13 summers. This, along with a family home for 10 years in Cashiers, is what led them to the Plateau for many extended trips and holidays. They married at High Hampton in May 2017 and decided to leave the Crescent City to make Cashiers their permanent home in 2019. Parker and Caroline welcomed their first child in February 2021 and are looking forward to raising their family in the mountains. Parker is committed to community involvement, from attending Church of the Good Shepherd to serving on his HOA board to volunteering at the Village Green and serving on the board of the Cashiers Historical Society. Outside of the office, you can also find him hiking the many mountains in our area, reading a book, or spending time enjoying this lovely place called home with Caroline, his son Michael "Reeves," and their golden retrievers, Jane and Winnie.
"Parker was wonderful to work with. At the beginning, he listened to our desires and presented a great curated list of suitable properties and we quickly narrowed it down the the property we bought. Throughout the process Parker kept us updated on all the details and answered every email, text, and phone call within moments. "He arranged the closing and provided contacts for the various services that will need. As we were buying from out of state, we really appreciated all of Parker’s help in making the process easy for us. "I would highly recommend working with Parker." - MARK & JACKIE BARRY
Chris Duffy Broker | 828-526-6763 | www.chrisduffy.ncliving.com
Denizens and regular visitors of the Highlands-Cashiers Plateau recognize Chris' voice the second they speak with him. That's not surprising, as Chris was the voice of the Plateau for a number of years as the morning show host on WHLC FM 104.5. Once you meet Chris, you'll certainly never miss him again, as his 6'9" stature literally makes him stand above the crowd. Chris was born in Germany and grew up in Washington, D.C. After studying at Georgia Tech and graduating from the University of Maryland, Chris moved to Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, where he lived for 22 years. In Canada, Chris worked as an on-air talent on numerous radio stations. He moved to Highlands in 2017 to take the job at WHLC. "I moved to the mountains to become the voice of Highlands, little did I know how much the Highlands-Cashiers Plateau would speak to me." An avid cook, Chris attended Le Cordon Bleu, receiving a Certificat de Traiteur, and loves sampling all the culinary delights the Highlands-Cashiers area has to offer. Chris quickly fell in love with the Plateau and decided he wanted to help other people enjoy our beautiful nature and live in our truly unique and amazing community. While he's no longer on the air, Chris still gets behind the mic as the in-game P.A. announcer for Highlands High School Basketball.
"We recently purchased property in Highlands with the assistance of Chris Duffy as our realtor. During these pandemic times, we had to work with messaging and text services. Whenever we were able to visit the property, Chris provided detailed information to review. Chris was diligent to answer our questions and provide additional information. Calls were quickly returned. When we neared closing, Chris worked with the attorney so that we could do a closing without traveling to Highlands. It was a great experience. We would recommend anyone to use Chris as their realtor." - GREG AND KAREN
Rick Jackson Broker | 404-275-7617 | www.rickjackson.ncliving.com
The Lake Toxaway, Cashiers, and Sapphire Valley areas have always been a huge draw for Rick and his family. Since the mid-90s, Rick and his family knew that one day they would like to own a second home where they could escape the heat and bustle of Atlanta. In 2008, they purchased a home on Lake Glenville where Rick, his wife, and three children—along with countless friends—have enjoyed the cool summers, beautiful fall colors, and the occasional snow during the holidays. Rick obtained his Georgia real estate license in 1998. He worked at a commercial real estate firm, specializing in residential development land in both suburban and in-town land tracts. In 2002, Rick starting purchasing his own investment property in the Atlanta area. His interests in real estate lead him into the Cashiers and Sapphire Valley market, and he obtained his North Carolina Real Estate License in 2014. When Rick is not busy selling real estate, he can be found outdoors playing golf, boating on Lake Glenville, or enjoying a motorcycle ride. He remains an active member at First Presbyterian Church of Atlanta, where he has taught Sunday School to four-year-olds for the last 21 years. He enjoys his commitments to his communities and has participated on several boards both in Atlanta and in NC. Philanthropic support is very important to Rick and his wife Lisa. Areas of specific interest include the University of Tennessee baseball program, the Auburn University baseball program, Camp Merrie-Woode, Friends of Lake Glenville, Cashiers-Glenville Volunteer Fire Department, Annandale Village of Suwanee, GA, the Chautauqua Institution in NY, and First Presbyterian Church of Atlanta.
"Rick listed our Lake Glenville home and within days had multiple cash offers, which turned into a bidding war. Rick’s professional guidance and constant communication provided us a smooth process during the transaction. Having an agent that lives on the lake as well has having an office on the lake proved to be invaluable. Rick went above and beyond in handling an abandoned well issue and septic permit discrepancy we were not aware of; he spent several weeks of his time sorting through the issues with the county and various vendors while we were out of state. Without question, Rick’s ability to take perspective buyers to visit lake properties via his boat made all the difference in getting maximum dollar for our home." - CHRIS AND MARY LYNN D.
Bambi Famous Kaine Broker | 828-200-4040 | www.bambikaine.ncliving.com
Raised in the suburbs of Philadelphia with her five siblings, Bambi spent her childhood years as an outdoor, sports, and animal enthusiast. Creating family memories at their lake home in the Poconos left an indelible impression on Bambi. Fulfilling a lifelong dream of returning to the mountains, destiny led Bambi and her husband Jeff to the Highlands-Cashiers Plateau where they own a contemporary home in Sapphire. Complementing her nurturing personality, Bambi pursued a nursing degree at Villanova University. Upon accomplishing extensive clinical and nursing management expertise in the TriState area, Bambi was recruited to the pharmaceutical industry. She relocated her family to Sarasota, Florida, where she excelled as an executive sales consultant with both Merck and Novartis. Inspired by several family members in real estate, Bambi obtained and has held her Florida license with one of the Leading Real Estate Companies of the World since 2007. Drawing from over a decade of experience in real estate, coupled with longstanding pharmaceutical sales, Bambi has built a reputation for her enthusiasm,
integrity, and caring nature which is an asset for matching client’s desires. It’s no surprise that she promptly became a reputable owner and property manager of luxury rentals in Sarasota. Bambi is a dedicated community member who fosters philanthropic endeavors. She established a 501(c)3 scholarship and mentoring program for high school students in Florida. Her genuine love for children and young adults continues to shine on the Plateau, where she serves on the Board of Directors with The Boys and Girls Club of the Plateau and volunteers with Girls on the Run of WNC. Bambi also serves the community through her position on the membership committee at the Country Club of Sapphire Valley. Having lived in Pennsylvania, Florida, and now North Carolina, Bambi understands the experience of buying and selling homes and the benefits of mountain living. So, when not fulfilling the dreams of her clients, you’ll find Bambi in her outrigger canoe or with Jeff and their two Portuguese Water Dogs (Marina and Tiago) kayaking, dock-diving, boating, fishing, hiking, or entertaining family and friends. If not outdoors, she might be on a plane heading to visit her son, Dane, a teacher in the Miami area.
"Our words cannot express how fortunate we were to have chosen Bambi Famous Kaine to represent us in the selling of our house in Sapphire, NC. It was evident from our first meeting that she was a dedicated professional. She brought along comps and a marketing plan that far exceeded our expectations and that of the other realtors we interviewed. Bambi's communication skills are excellent, always returning our calls in a timely manner and often anticipating issues and driving solutions when needed. Bambi always goes the extra mile in everything she does, she is a credit not only to her clients and her agency, but her community as well." - MARY AND DENNIS HELPER

Katie Adams Nicholson Broker | 828-399-1824 | www.katienicholson.ncliving.com
Raised in Dublin, Georgia, Katie Adams Nicholson graduated from college and moved to Atlanta in 2000. During her seven years at a real estate investment and management company there, she worked in the acquisitions department, seeking retail and commercial facilities in New York, Boston, San Francisco, and Atlanta. After hearing about the Highlands-Cashiers Plateau for years while living in Atlanta, she took a leap of faith and moved in 2008 to work on a mixed-use project in downtown Cashiers. Although the project never came to fruition, Katie had fallen in love with the area and never left. Katie met her husband, a local general contractor who was born and raised in the area, in 2009. She spent the next 10 years working at the Chinquapin management office and was hands-on with the development and growth of the community, becoming a top-selling agent with a focus on land and new home build packages. With a passion for the outdoors and the mountain lifestyle, Katie loves helping clients find their perfect fit. Katie attributes her success to working closely with clients throughout the entire process, from learning about the area to finding their ultimate home, as well as handling the sale or construction of it. Katie spends her free time hiking with friends and her dog Bella.
“...My wife and I have bought and sold dozens of properties and homes ... [Katie] clearly has both buyer and seller’s interests in mind on the three transactions we did over the last two years. I am convinced by the outcome she did everything she could to get us a very fair deal. What you also need to know is Katie seems to genuinely want to know you not just make a buck. She puts the boots on to find survey pins on vacant lots and will just walk with you to get to know you so to better understand what you need. In that handful of my favorite realtors, buy or sell side, it was the do-whatever-it-takes with experience that finally seals the deal for us. Katie proved to be creative, thoughtful, and diligent while truly getting to know us. In Jackson and surrounding counties, it would never occur to me not to seek out Katie to represent us in our future real estate endeavors. ” - TERRY RENOUX

Rob Whitney
Broker | 828-399-1196 | www.robwhitney.ncliving.com
After growing up in Brentwood, Tennessee, Rob Whitney moved to Knoxville to attend the University of Tennessee. During college, Rob worked for General Nutrition Company (GNC), eventually becoming a franchisee of two store locations. While on vacation at Lake Glenville, he met who would become his future wife, Susanne Moore. Susanne has been a general contractor since she moved to the area in 1997, where her mother had been a real estate broker for some time. After only a week, Rob knew she was "the one," and a year later, sold his stores, moved to the Highlands-Cashiers Plateau, and married Susanne on Snowbird Mountain. Rob knew he wanted to be a part of the family business in some manner and earned his real estate license in 2005. Since then, Rob has become a skilled expert in the area's real estate market. Rob's retail background aids him in his real estate career, but Rob loves no longer being confined to a small store, instead spending every day in the beautiful outdoors helping his clients find their next dream vacation property. His clients looking to build or renovate a home can draw from his wife's well of knowledge to make informed decisions. Rob enjoys working with both buyers and sellers, helping them achieve their real estate goals by empowering them with the necessary guidance and support.
"I have been working with Rob Whitney for about three years. In that time he has successfully sold my boat slip at Cedar Point and my home in Cashiers near Lake Glenville. We have another home that is under contract and will close soon. I interviewed several prominent realtors who had years of experience in the Cashiers area but ultimately made an easy decision to go with Rob. A decision proven to have been the right one. He was very attentive and responsive throughout the whole process and really knew the market. I would certainly recommend him to anyone needing real estate expertise in the Cashiers Valley area." - ALAN AND MOLLY J.
