JOCHEN LUCKE President and Owner of Silver Creek Real Estate Group

A LETTER FROM OUR PRESIDENT

For those who have had the pleasure of spending time on the Highlands-Cashiers Plateau, you know that our cooler climate makes hiking, boating, and playing sports like golf, tennis, pickleball, and croquet all the more enjoyable. Now, as another fun-filled summer flows into fall, my favorite seasonal events and spectacles are nearing, some of which we talk about in this issue.

Silver Creek Real Estate Group’s offices in Cashiers, Highlands, and Lake Glenville have been busy introducing our new friends to their mountain getaways and keeping current clients updated on market conditions and valuations. As I have discussed in previous letters, our real estate market is evolving. The increase in available properties is beneficial for both buyers and sellers, and housing prices are moving into a more balanced position. I believe these trends will carry on throughout the coming year.

A place for reflection, imagination, and community.

For decades, artists and art-lovers alike have been seeking inspiration among the idyllic Blue Ridge Mountains where the high peaks are blanketed in low-lying morning fog, and the dense forest is saturated with vibrant life. The perfect backdrop for oil on canvas, and the perfect location for The Bascom – a visual arts center dedicated to creating experiences that inspire and empower individuals and communities through seeing, thinking, and doing. This year, their annual theme is “Place,” and where could be a better place be than here?

In the main building, you will find The Bascom Shop, which displays the works of over 150 local and regional artists. Here, you will have the opportunity to take home something special while also supporting the local creative economy and artistic entrepreneurs whose works bring joy and inspiration to our community. From September 6th to October 15th, 2022, their Pop-Up Shop will feature works by artists Judy Brater, Amanda Taylor, and Kat Cole.

“As makers and creators, human beings experience the world as both a place given to them and as a place they can mark, shape, and mold. The places that become homes to us offer familiarity, comfort, and even companionship. Places seem to have their own identities – they act on us, call us to them, invite response. Many creative acts seem to emanate from the experience of a place – a stunning landscape or a quiet interior can express or even recall the sense of a place.” - The Bascom With this year’s theme, The Bascom invites us all to explore place and by extension places as sources of beauty, and as generators of community and belonging. All works displayed in this year’s exhibitions celebrate the human experience of place and its resonance in art forms. As we reflect on these works, we are also invited to consider place as a source of longing, loss, separation, and displacement. This year’s exhibitions challenge us to consider the ambivalence of the places we love and the ways in which we are too attached, or too detached from the land, the people, and the communities we “Theinhabit.annual theme of Place is an appropriate focus for our organization this year because we are located on a beautiful campus valued for its architectural features and its embeddedness in the landscape and culture of The HighlandsCashiers Plateau,” remarks Executive Director Karin Peterson. “As we have pursued the theme of place this year, we have come to understand ourselves better by examining both our grounding in place and our ability to be transported to new places through visual imagery.” the campus A refuge for the spirit nurtured by history and nature, the Plateau has long welcomed those who have come to appreciate and draw from its natural beauty. The Bascom started as a vision – just as any fine piece of art does – and what began in 1983 as small exhibits and classes in one room of the Hudson Library, has grown into what is now the artistic and creative hub of the Plateau and its art-minded, and artappreciating community.

“To me, this place is about people,” says Deputy Executive Director, Billy Love, “If you really look into what we do, it’s not only based on the visual arts, but it’s all about engaging people, getting people to explore new ideas. That’s the backbone of what we do here.”

The custom campus is located on a former horse farm in Highlands, NC, and features an 87-footlong covered bridge entrance – the Will Henry Stevens Bridge; a 2,500 square-foot barn serving as the Dave Drake Ceramic Studio; and a central three-story main building from which they host a variety of gallery exhibitions. Connecting visitors with its beautiful landscape, the Horst Winkler Sculpture Trail allows for peaceful meditation on its grand installations as you traverse the footpath and admire the flora and fauna of the pristine property.

NC LIVING FALL 2022 15

The now six-acre park-like visual arts center has welcomed visitors of all ages and experiences since May of 2009. “What’s wonderful about The Bascom is that admission is free. We welcome everyone to venture across the covered bridge, to come inside, see the galleries, and to experience what we have to offer. We truly want to be accessible to all,” says Director of Exhibitions, Zachary Rogers.

As stewards of the arts, the Highlands-Cashiers community is about nature and education. The Bascom and its three galleries are hosts to approximately 10 exhibitions each year, along with various seminars and lectures designed to inspire and share knowledge. All of these events feature the expertise and work of artists local to the region, Bascom instructors and students, Artist Fellows and Residents, as well as world-renowned artists – bringing rarely seen collections to the Plateau for their 20,000-plus visitors to enjoy.

Through April 2023, The Bascom is displaying its second installment of the annual outdoor sculpture exhibit on its Horst Winkler Sculpture Trail. These installations by artists Michael Austin, Jonathan Forrence, Kyle Van Lusk, Beau Lyday, and Shawnaizja Simmons invite you to get outside and admire the beauty of The Bascom’s 6-acre campus while pondering their unique artistic interpretations of Place.

This fabulous series of works truly brings a rare opportunity to the Plateau for all to experience the intricate and worldly art form of Japanese woodblock printing. Programming for the exhibition includes a public reception on Thursday, September 15th at 5:00 pm and a curator talk with Sara Arnold, The Gibbes Museum Director of Curatorial Affairs, on Sept 17th at 11:00 am. “I was doing things that I didn’t really enjoy and I wasn’t very good at, which is almost everything aside from graphology,” Ms. Bache laughs.

Although she has been working in lettering analysis since 1989, Ms. Bache chanced upon her career path in yet another twist of fate.

For instance, a person’s handwriting will change ever so slightly based on how she feels that day,

In a comical twist of fate, handwriting expert Emma Bache cannot read her own writing. This from the author of Reading Between the Lines, an engaging treatise on graphology.

“I knew what graphology was, but I didn’t know anything about it, so I said yes,” Ms. Bache says. “If it wasn’t for her suggestion, I wouldn’t have done it.”

After leaving the United Kingdom’s “industrial heartland” for London at 18, she worked for a finance company without satisfaction.

Soon after, Ms. Bache found herself completing a three-year course at the British Institute of Graphology.

“Fine motor coordination is one of the things that sets us apart from other species, and handwriting is part of that,” Ms. Bache says. “When we pick up a pen or pencil, it’s not our hand that’s directing, our brain is directing our hand.”

The first reference to the discipline may have been the ancient Chinese philosopher Confucius (551479 BC), who said, “Beware a man whose writing sways like a reed in the wind.”

“My writing is so awful that if I’ve written a shopping list, for instance, and it’s more than a day old, I honestly wouldn’t be able to read it,” the London-based graphologist says. “It’s bad, isn’t Graphologyit?” is the study of how a person’s innate characteristics and emotions are transferred to paper with the stroke of a pen, and a pro such as Ms. Bache can deduce someone’s personality, energy level, honesty, mood and even health issues by analyzing just a few lines of handwriting.

gaugingthanisHandwritingmorescienceartwhena personality

“I was looking at the absolute intricacies of handwriting — what this move meant and what this little mark meant — every little thing,” she says of the first year of her education, before moving on to the psychology behind it all and what exactly to do with her newfound skills. “It was a very valuable training for me.”

“As far as psychology is concerned, it’s a really good way of seeing the individual at that very moment that they’re writing,” she says.

Ms. Bache describes the act of writing as bringing our psyche above ground, our inner personalities flowing out onto the paper through our hands.

A friend invited her to a weekend handwriting workshop just for fun.

NC LIVING FALL 2022 25

Ms. Bache says that one of the first examples of handwriting analysis was done on the infamous Roman statesman Julius Caesar. “They recorded various traits in his writing and compared it to other people’s at the time and said this is what we think it Graphology’smeans.”modern origins lie in 17th-century Italy. The Germans and French in the 1800s molded it into what it is today, formalizing the study of handwriting and adding elements of “Wepsychology.inBritainare a bit conservative about those kinds of things so I’m probably living in the wrong country,” Ms. Bache quips, “but, on the other hand I think everybody, wherever they live, whatever the demographic, are all interested in what makes us “I’mtick.”interested in people and really what lies beneath the surface, so I feel what I do is absolutely perfect for my personality,” she says.

“It was a very inspirational Scottish woman who was teaching us,” she says. “Honestly, I got completely hooked.”

Over time, “our handwriting naturally gets faster, it becomes looser, and we’re not going to be corrected when those little nuances of our personality happen,” Ms. Bache points out.

“Although the same main, basic characteristics of me are probably the same as when I was 10, I’m not really that same person, because I’ve had a whole load of stresses, griefs and joys that have adapted my personality to make me the way I Lookingam.”at a collection of someone’s handwriting from childhood through the years and into present day gives just a glimpse of his life — not exactly what he was doing, but at least how he was affected emotionally by what he was doing.

Taking manipulative personalities a bit further, psychopathy, and finding its signs within a person’s handwriting, is of great interest to Ms. Bache.

“Our writing changes in life because we get affected by certain things just in the same way as our personality changes,” Ms. Bache explains.

“Even if we wrote something down at 11 in the morning, our handwriting would be different than at 11 at night,” Ms. Bache says. “It can change on an hour-to-hour basis because of how we feel physically, mentally and emotionally.”

Whether or not people are hiding something is a question Ms. Bache gets asked a lot. And she can tell “Wheneasily.somebody is trying to be somebody they’re not or trying to portray a different emotion, the speed of the writing slows right down,” she says. “It could be somebody who’s just a little bit uncertain or it could be somebody who’s quite manipulative and sort of thinks about things very carefully.”

Something else that can be misleading, perhaps

how she feels about what she is writing about, how she feels about the person she is writing to, and what may be going on in her life at the time.

Analyzing a person’s handwriting can pinpoint their state of mind at any given time throughout his or her life.

Just as Confucius warned, “Sometimes you get a very undulating line, which can mean, if it’s a permanent thing, that the person is quite moody or someone that is very difficult to pin down,” Ms. Bache says. “But those people can also be the most “Somecreative.personalities are quite small, others are more expansive, or at least they want people to think they’re expansive,” which all shows in their writing, she adds.

“The slant of your handwriting is one thing that is likely to change the most throughout life, because that’s really our emotion and how we project to other people,” Ms. Bache says.

“I would be looking for a lot of angles as opposed to curves, very, very heavy pressure — when you’ve got a lot of daggers and sharp endings along with heavy pressure that’s probably somebody whose energy is directed into violence,” she says. “It sounds as though it makes me a bit perverse, but I really enjoy looking at the abnormal, because most of us are pretty normal.”

“I love seeing people’s handwriting over time,” Ms. Bache says. “You know, life is a journey and it’s interesting to see how anybody is at any moment of the Handwritingjourney.”really begins to reflect the person behind the pen once they have left school, since students are forming letters and words based on what they are taught — it must be neat and legible and must follow the teacher’s rules.

There are a dozen main basics that experts check: line quality (indicating speed), spacing of both words and letters, size consistency, lifting of the pen or pencil, connection in words and letters, completely formed letters, use of cursive or print, pressure, slant, the angle of a line of text, placement of dots and crosses, and flourishes such as curls, loops and angles.

“Everything is important, but nothing on its own is important,” says Ms. Bache of beginning an analysis. “I’m really looking at the handwriting holistically.”

“But sometimes you’ll see large writing, but with other characteristics that actually say the person is more self-reflective or introverted,” she says. “It might suit them to put on a show of being seemingly confident when, in fact, they’re not.”

Generally, the bigger the writing, the more extroverted the person.

hire her to delve into their own compatibility with potential employees and seeing if they really are how they acted in an Additionally, interview.

Although a trained graphologist can seemingly see someone’s whole life story, emotional ups and downs and inner mind, there are three things that the expert somewhat surprisingly cannot tell: the subject’s age, sex and whether the person is rightor Ms.left-handed.Bachecantell, however, that Queen Elizabeth II is altruistic, proud and protective of others, and that former U.S. President Donald Trump, while aggressive, is not as chaotic as everyone thinks, carefully planning out what he says. This year I’m looking to surpass my 2021 sales and continue to build my personal brand within Silver Creek. Equally as important is perfecting my everyday process and work/life balance, as well as striving to reach the peak of my health and fitness goals.

Long desiring a return to the mountains, Bambi and her husband Jeff found a renewed sense of community on the Highlands-Cashiers Plateau. It was not long before her philanthropic nature took over and she endeavored to give back to the area that so warmly welcomed her family. When asked to share a local non-profit she is particularly passionate about, Bambi’s answer was immediate – The Boys and Girls Club of the Plateau. It was her nurturing spirit that led to her position on their Board of Directors where she finds immense fulfillment in supporting local kids and encouraging their education, personal growth, and ultimate success. “I have always been drawn to youthful energy,” she explains, “I love watching kids grow and thrive, and I thrive on mentoring them. Here in the Highlands-Cashiers Plateau, there is a critical need to support our kids, and the Boys and Girls Club meets that need.”

In deciding where to grow her real estate career, Bambi says it was easy to choose Silver Creek Real Estate Group. “It was 100% the marketing and brand,” she explains. “Having spent fifteen years in the Pharmaceutical Industry, the importance of exceptional marketing and branding is what differentiates your business, and bar none, Jochen [Lucke, Silver Creek’s Founder & President] crafts the best marketing on the Plateau.”

WHAT GOALS HAVE YOU BEEN WORKING TOWARDS IN 2022?

With a deep-rooted passion for caring for those around her, Bambi pursued a nursing degree at Villanova University where her expertise in nursing, management, and attention to detail did not go unnoticed. After over a decade of clinical experience, she was recruited into the pharmaceutical industry, where she excelled as an Executive Sales Consultant with both Merck and Novartis, in Sarasota, FL. Drawing inspiration from family members in real estate, Bambi went on to obtain her real estate license and dove into the high-end rental market of Sarasota. There, her genuine desire to provide exceptional experiences to her clients earned her a stellar reputation as an owner and manager of luxury rentals.

“The butterfly garden is not just special to me as a place for Katelyn, but also because it is important for me to give back to our community. I’m from a very small area similar to this, and my grandfather was responsible for all of the open park spaces where I grew up,” she says. “It was really important to him that we preserve our lands and parks and allow the community to enjoy that space. He was a major influence on my life.” This thoughtful nature has earned her a reputation amongst all that meet her as a steward of care, integrity, and enthusiasm. From delivering on her clients’ dreams to serving the needs of her community and encouraging the success of her colleagues, it is evident that Bambi Famous Kaine loves what she does.

A native of the Philadelphia suburbs, and one of six children, Bambi spent her childhood exploring outdoors, fishing, participating in various sports and cultivating a profound love for her environment, community, and family.

When she’s not busy earning her title as a Sales Leader at Silver Creek, Bambi can be found spending time with her husband, Jeff, her son Dane and his new wife, Pamela, and their two Portuguese water dogs, Marina and Tiago.

In addition to this, for the past five years, she’s been a mentor to Amber, a relationship that started through Big Brothers Big Sisters of Western North Carolina. She also serves on the membership committee at the Country Club of Sapphire Valley. True to her nature at every turn, each contribution Bambi makes to the Plateau is reverberant of her core values and commitment to giving back. Situated on a tranquil bend of the Cashiers Village Green, a butterfly garden dedicated to her daughter Katelyn, serves as an everlasting reminder of her desire to brighten our community, while honoring her family’s deep-seated commitment to the conservation of our lands.

WHAT IS THE MOST VALUABLE THING YOU’VE LEARNED WHILE WORKING AS A BROKER? That’s easy: Integrity. You need to maintain your integrity at all costs, with clients, and colleagues alike. The sale is not what’s important, what’s important is that people know I am trustworthy and that I have their best interest at heart above all else. BROKER | 828-200-4040 | BAMBIKAINE.NCLIVING.COM

TELL US ABOUT YOUR FAVORITE RESTAURANT ON THE PLATEAU AND WHAT MAKES IT SPECIAL… The Library Kitchen + Bar. It was the first restaurant Jeff and I went to when we decided to move here. It was when they were first opening. I love that we’re here in the midst of a hidden gem, and we have five-star cuisine crafted by a Michelinstar chef. It’s hands down my favorite place on The Plateau.

WHAT IS THE MOST IMPORTANT THING SOMEONE SHOULD KNOW BEFORE STARTING THEIR SEARCH FOR A HOME ON THE PLATEAU? More so than finding a home, find the right community that fits your wants, needs, and spirit – and then we will find you a place where you will feel right at home.

WHAT GOALS ARE YOU LOOKING TO BEYOND 2022?

Looking to the future, I want Savanah Hopper, my Executive Assistant, to be successful.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE A NEW REAL ESTATE AGENT?

It goes back to me being detail oriented and recognizing that even the little things are vitally important. If a homeowner is hiring me for a job, I want to do that job like I would any other, 110%. If that means taking an extra week to make their home fresh and presentable, my team and I are going to do that. From buying new linens, comforters, and towels, to arranging fresh flowers on the day of photos, we’ll do whatever it takes to ensure a positive first impression.

WHERE IS YOUR FAVORITE PLACE TO TRAVEL AND VISIT? Wherever Jeff and Dane are.

I would say, know your market, listen, really listen to people’s needs, and maintain a work/life balance. Your schedule is one of the few things you can control in real estate, and if you don’t do that it can consume your life, so set boundaries, and set them right away.

There are a lot of great agents, and many that I admire, but I would say what differentiates me is how detail-oriented I am. I value the importance of fully targeting the client’s goals, above my own. It’s important for me to understand their lifestyle and expectations during their search for a home. First and foremost, I want them to feel comfortable with their options and be empowered to act on them.

TELL US ABOUT ONE OF THE MOST MEMORABLE CONCERTS YOU’VE BEEN TO… The most recent – Coldplay. I went with my son Dane and his wife Pamela. So that made it that much more special. There was something unexplainable about that concert. It was more than just music. As musicians, they are so tuned in to their environment and to social responsibility. They are passionate about the world and people, and truly take time to show support for their fans worldwide.

WHAT QUALITIES DIFFERENTIATE YOU FROM OTHER AGENTS IN OUR MARKET?

HOW DID YOU BEGIN TO INCORPORATE STAGING INTO YOUR PRACTICE?

IF SOMEONE IS SPENDING ONLY A DAY ON THE PLATEAU, WHAT WOULD YOU SAY ARE SOME “MUST-DO’S”? The Village Green, hikes, and viewing waterfalls. I would really just recommend they spend time exploring the beauty of Western North Carolina and all that we have here.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE SEASON ON THE PLATEAU? That’s a tough one, but I’m going to say the summer. I love the hype and the energy that comes from everyone here. Everything is so plush and green. I am constantly in awe of how beautiful it is.

“We are so lucky that Dan Allen was our Realtor, especially in this crazy market! Dan is so patient and never put any pressure on us, even though it took us over a year to find the right house. In fact, he was intuitive enough that when we were debating properties he would tell us “I know we can find a better home for you than this” and spoke with us about his thoughts from an investment/resale perspective down the road as well. He genuinely wanted to help us find the best place, not just make a sale. I cannot tell you how much we appreciate his patience and local knowledge of the market and Cashiers/Sapphire area. We were constantly driving up from Atlanta to look at properties and not only was Dan incredibly accommodating but over time he got to know us well enough to tell us if it was worthwhile for us to make the drive (he was always right!). Thank you so much for your help navigating this market during a tricky time! We are so excited about our new home. We hope to have the opportunity to work together again in the future.”

A member of the Silver Creek team since its beginnings, Dan has built a solid reputation as a skilled real estate professional and a consistent top producer. His dedication, knowledge of the area and market trends, and his strong work ethic make him the ideal broker choice for buyers and sellers alike to achieve their real estate goals. He possesses an innate understanding of what draws families to the Highlands-Cashiers Plateau - just as he was after many summertime visits with family as a child. In 1994, Dan was able to realize his lifelong dream when he set down roots on a mountaintop farm near Cashiers. An advocate for animals and the environment, he has been deeply involved in his community, previously serving on the board of the Cashiers-Highlands Humane Society and the Jackson-Macon Conservation Alliance, and supports the Highlands-Cashiers Land Trust, American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, and the Nature Conservancy, as well as local first responder organizations and Big Brothers Big Sisters. Always seeking new ways to better himself in the industry he loves, Dan is currently serving on the Highlands-Cashiers Board of Realtors and is a member of the North Carolina Board of Realtors and the National Association of Realtors. He brings nearly three decades of experience with local builders, designers, contractors, lawyers, fellow brokers, and business owners together for a seamless real estate experience. He brings a fresh approach and genuine enthusiasm about our area to each new client he serves. His positive, straightshooting perspective, vast local knowledge, honesty, integrity, and authentic interest in his clients’ satisfaction make him an invaluable listing and buying partner. When Dan is not helping other families realize their dreams of living in NC’s Blue Ridge Mountains, he spends much of his time with his own family, friends, and three rescue dogs, and can be found enjoying a relaxing day at the lake, hiking, or biking local trails, gardening, foraging, or cultivating his farm. Dan is a respected member of the Plateau community and a welcome member of the Silver Creek Real Estate Group team.

Parker is committed to community involvement, from attending Church of the Good Shepherd to serving on his HOA board to volunteering at the Village Green and serving on the board of the Cashiers Historical Society. Parker and Caroline welcomed their first child in February 2021 and are looking forward to raising their family in the mountains.

“My husband and I had been searching independently for lots in the Cashiers and Highlands area and were fortunate to be paired up with Parker Anderson with Silver Creek Real Estate Group. Parker is very attentive to clients’ preferences and listened to what we were looking for in a lot to build on so we can retire in Cashiers. Parker is great with communication! It was important for us to have someone stay in close contact since we currently live out of state. He kept us informed of available lots to review prior to visiting the area, over multiple visits, and was very responsive to our questions. Over the course of two separate visits, Parker found several lots for us to see and compiled a booklet of helpful information for us on each lot (pictures, plat maps, survey info when available, etc.), and met with us in his office prior to driving to the lots. Once we found the perfect lot, he even helped connect us with the HOA so we could get more specific information about the community. Parker is a resident of Cashiers and is incredibly knowledgeable about the area. He answered all our questions about the best restaurants, grocery stores, community services, hiking trails, good veterinarians, and even doggy daycare! Parker Anderson was a pleasure to work with! We are appreciative of Parker’s efforts in helping us find the perfect lot for building. We found a beautiful lot that met all our requirements, and we made a friend in the process. We highly recommend Parker Anderson for his attentiveness to clients’ needs, knowledge of the Cashiers/Highlands area, and professionalism.”

It was something new to us and it would not have been such a great experience had she not gone above and beyond for us in every way. “Debby worked with my partner and me on a development we have in Sylva, North Carolina. We had just started the first phase of this unique project and knew we needed help with the design. Debby decorated the first building and then moved on to the lodge which was laying in a pile on our property. She worked with the engineer, builder and I to get the antique barn we were reconstructing on paper and then she laid out the floor plan to include an addition. Our 5 bedroom, 3-story barn lodge is now a showpiece, thanks in part to Debby’s creativity. We get compliments on the Lodge every time we show it. It is warm, inviting, unique and beautiful. In the 2 ½ years it took to complete this project, Debby worked with a team of builders, trades, and suppliers on a weekly basis overseeing her part in the design and construction. Her job was not easy. Her communication skill and ability to be flexible without sacrificing the end result was a huge plus for us. She is easy and enjoyable to work with. She has my full endorsement!”

After living part-time in Highlands for more than 15 years, Debby permanently relocated to the area and began working as a real estate professional. She is based at Silver Creek’s office in downtown Highlands. Debby holds a bachelor of science degree in interior design from the University of Tennessee as well as real estate licenses in North Carolina and Georgia. She has served as a volunteer for the Special Olympics and as treasurer for her homeowner association’s board of directors. She has also been active in various neighborhood associations, volunteering on the architectural control and landscape committees.

Silver Creek Real Estate Group’s motto, “Building Relationships, Delivering Dreams,” aligns with Debby’s philosophy. Through years of experience, she gained the ability to listen closely and understand clients’ wants and needs, and then match them to a home that fits. Debby often scouted potential homes with her clients in Atlanta, Highlands, on Lake Keowee, and on Daufuskie Island. Her keen eye and expertise in space planning and design led to her decision to shift to the real estate profession, which allows her to help sellers position their homes for the highest sale and walk buyers through spaces and point out opportunities that most do not see. Debby envisions the simple changes that can convert a house into the dream home her clients are seeking. Whether for a high-end custom or speculative home, she also collaborated with architects during the planning stages, and with builders on construction and interiors.

Debby Hall is used to finding and creating dream homes for clients.  For more than three decades, she has been a successful, Atlanta-based interior designer and entrepreneur, with clients across the Southeastern U.S. Debby’s work was featured for three consecutive years at both the Atlanta Symphony Showhouse and Christmas at Callanwolde events.

When she’s not working, Debby enjoys gardening and other creative outlets. She cherishes time with her son and family in Knoxville, Tennessee as well as with friends — whether two-legged or four. She can be seen with her rescue dog, Gracie, walking the trails and around town. A lifelong lover of architecture and homes, she also enjoys cooking in her “laboratory,” using her friends as guinea pigs for her creations. She even cooks meals for Gracie.

She has extensive knowledge of marketing, technology, and the greater Sapphire and Cashiers market and has earned a reputation among agents as someone who is hardworking and extremely competent. Her sense of responsibility to her clients and attention to detail make her an asset to anyone looking to buy or sell property in the area.

Raised in Dublin, GA, Katie Adams Nicholson graduated from college and moved to Atlanta in 2000. During her seven years at a real estate investment and management company there, she worked in the acquisitions department, seeking retail and commercial facilities in New York, Boston, San Francisco, and Atlanta.

After hearing about the Highlands-Cashiers Plateau for years while living in Atlanta, she took a leap of faith and moved in 2008 to work on a mixed-use project in downtown Cashiers. Although the project never came to fruition, Katie had fallen in love with the area and never left.  Katie met her husband, a local general contractor who was born and raised in the area, in 2009. “Mike and I had been looking for a second home for many years, never finding the right location or Realtor. We had never heard of Cashiers or the plateau but made a brief stop to see the waterfalls. We had the pleasure of meeting Katie at that time, who has partnered with us from that point - knowing nothing about the area to 5 years later, living here full time. Katie took the time to get to know us and help us get to know the Cashiers area. We had not planned to build, but after understanding existing options, Katie helped us make comfortable with the decision to buy land and start from scratch. Because she is so honest and direct, choosing the right lot, finding a builder and agreeing on the design went fairly smoothly. Because she has significant experience, Katie was able to walk us thru the various issues with relative ease. And now, thanks to Katie, we are home, in a community that we love. We could not recommend Katie more highly and look forward to hearing about her continued success.”

In search of mild temperatures and a place to unwind, Chuck Self made his first visit to the Highlands-Cashiers Plateau more than 20 years ago on a summer getaway with his family. During that short visit, Chuck realized that Western North Carolina was where he wanted to be. The desire for the mountain lifestyle led him to search for property in the area for several years until he found the perfect piece of land on which to build a dream home. Intended to be a second residence until Chuck’s retirement, the home soon took precedence; the lure of the majestic Blue Ridge Mountains inspired him to say “goodbye” to the intense pace, traffic, and heat of Atlanta when construction was completed. And so, the simplicity and splendor of full-time mountain living began.

Wellness goes beyond mindful eating and active lifestyles — our surroundings have a profound impact on both our physical and emotional health. Namely, we need to get in better touch with nature through biophilic design.

Barnard prioritizes biophilia in much of her work, including within an ocean-facing penthouse in California, where she picked out low-profile furniture to preserve the sightline to the sea.

“Study after study shows that in rooms that look onto nature — a tree, some plants, a patch of grass — people have lower cortisol. Rooms that incorporate nature provide the same benefits.”

60 SILVER CREEK REAL ESTATE GROUP

“Biophilia is our innate desire or tendency to commune with or be close to nature,” says Interior Designer Sarah Barnard of Sarah Barnard Design. “We are comforted by nature, and we all understand that on some level.”

Of course, moving outside offers additional opportunities to integrate nature within the home.

“STUDY AFTER STUDY SHOWS THAT IN ROOMS THAT LOOK ONTO NATURE — A TREE, SOME PLANTS, A PATCH OF GRASS — PEOPLE HAVE LOWER CORTISOL. ROOMS THAT THENATUREINCORPORATEPROVIDESAMEBENEFITS," said Interior Designer Sarah Barnard of Sarah Barnard Design biophilia in design nature

Another recommendation of hers is to use light fixtures or art pieces reminiscent of nature to further the theme.

The function of the backyard has expanded and, accordingly, requires much the same flourish as the interior.

The recent demand for larger properties provides opportunity for bold ideas.

“We do a lot of homes right on the ocean, and you see a lot of these balconies where it’s just a foot of space with a glass guardrail. Nobody’s hanging out on them. In my theory, that’s because it’s not a true outdoor room — it’s just a dead-end balcony.”

THE SKY IS (LITERALLY)

Fragrant plants, like florals, are another frequent request. Fragrants “go beyond beauty — they create an atmosphere,” describes Hartlage. When considering the overall atmosphere of the exterior, ambitious concepts can further enhance the outdoor experience.

AN OUTDOOR “ROOM”

“We don’t do a project without a fire feature these days,” observes Hartlage. He also lists outdoor kitchens, dining spaces, and swimming pools as other highly sought-after amenities.

“It’s not just about making a wall disappear, it’s about creating a true outdoor room,” describes Anthony Laney, Founding Partner of Laney LA. Treating it as another room within the home and carefully selecting furniture and décor to match allows it to act as a true living space, whereas unthoughtful design can result in missed opportunities.

With living in mind, it’s important to consider “function before form,” as does Richard Hartlage, Founding Principal and CEO of landscape architecture firm Land Morphology.

Keeping in mind that many homes are accommodating multi-purposes within their rooms, clever, space-saving resolutions are quite appealing for those wanting to maximize the use of their backyards.

advises Conversely,Hartlage.forthose in urban areas and tight on space, creative solutions can offer their own magic. One of Laney’s most exciting projects involves a “Disappearing Pool” in Manhattan Beach, California.

“At the press of a button, the floor of the pool can go down and extend its depth. Alternatively, it can come up for playing sports, come up even higher to transform into a splash pad, or it can level with the pool deck and become a dry dance floor,” describes Laney.

“I think that adaptability is growing increasingly relevant. The dining room is now the office. Spaces no longer have a stationary nametag — they need to perform multiple uses.”

BIOPHILIA: WHY NOW?

A project by architecture firm KAA Design, “Tower Grove Drive” is sited along a hillside. Rather than treating the home as a house atop a hill, it was built to feel like one with the landscape through the deliberate placement of terraces across the multi-level home, all the way up to a vegetated rooftop.

Text reproduced with permission from Luxury Portfolio International and Luxury Portfolio magazine. © Luxury Portfolio International. All rights reserved.

“The vegetated roof acts as an extension of the landscape through the house itself so that it feels contextual to the site. It’s not alien — it’s very much a part of the hill,” explains Duan Tran, Partner at KAA BecauseDesign.ofthe remoteness of the rooftop garden, it’s made to be extremely low maintenance. This was achieved using plants native to Southern California. As an added benefit, the butterfly roof is at a 15-degree angle, perfectly positioned for its solar panels. In fact, the entire home was built to be as nurturing to nature as nature is to its residents.

When asked why biophilia is having its moment, Tran stated that the current desire to connect with nature is, of course, exacerbated with the pandemic and extended stints indoors. Evolving lifestyles have offered some silver linings, such as added personal time. For some, however, reduced commutes have diminished time spent outdoors, so it only makes sense the rising drive for nature-focused spaces. When considering biophilia’s mental and physical benefits, its ideals should become essential to all forms of design.

Beyond backyard destinations and “Disappearing Pools,” visionary design can come in the form of exceptional, nature-related concepts.

a collection to crafting jackets in the perfect Pantone shade for a special design project. These custom hand-assembled covers can even be lined up to create an image that stretches across multiple books, a shelf or an entire wall. There is also a dizzying array of ready-made book sets to choose from, each with graphics that pop out from any bookshelf.

“When I started selling printed books, my friends in the tech world that I’d come out of were like, why are you bothering? Didn’t you get the memo that they’re gonna be gone?” he laughs.

TOME DECOR

So, what does your room look like? A wall filled with leather-bound classics that evokes the smell of cigar smoke? Impeccably aligned shelves with monotone volumes that whisper minimalism? A jumble of dog-eared paperbacks waiting to be picked up again? Or a colorful mural splashed across a compilation of favorite art tomes? No matter what vision speaks to your soul, home library guru and Juniper Books founder Thatcher Wine has got you covered.

“Books should serve a dual purpose,” Mr. Wine says. “Because I can only read one book at a time, the other thousand books that I have, they have to be doing something while they’re waiting for me to come back and read them. So, they should look good. They should make my house look good. They should make me look smart. And they should tell the story of who I am.”

Homeowners can hire Juniper Books to design their library from the ground up, either rounding out their personal collections or creating one from scratch. Mr. Wine can put together “dozens, hundreds or even thousands of books,” basing his choices on the client’s favorite novels, authors, subjects or interests. From there, working with designers or the clients directly, the aesthetics of the library emerge through conversations, the rest of the home’s style, mood boards, color palettes and Pinterest.

Classic or modern? Artistic or minimalist? These may not be questions people normally ask of their

After his online customer service company ran out of money, Mr. Wine made the switch to the old-school printed word, with some help from the exponentially expanding Internet world he had just left. He began selling books online in 2001 as a hobby, feeding his love for collecting first and rare editions, never intending it to become a business.

Mr.

At the same time as Amazon and its Kindle were busy trying to render physical bookstores and books obsolete, Mr. Wine doubled down on print, imagining a new way to justify a library continuing to take up space at home.

“They loved it, their designer loved it, and I still work with both of them,” he says.

But after someone asked him to curate a library with 3,000 new books for their beach house four years later, something clicked.

“I’ve evolved it a lot over the years, and that’s really been driven by other book lovers and design lovers,” Mr. Wine says. “I kind of increasingly found the intersection of books and design that was very unique and nobody else was doing.”

Working with designer Phillippe Starck to wrap books in blank jackets for various projects and later taking requests for other sets to match décor, he realized that they could be a canvas for so much more. Juniper Books’ signature printed sets were born. With an image that conveys the mood, theme, plot or other element inside the collection, ranging from Ernest Hemingway’s greatest hits to “Start Here,” filled with writings on anti-racism, the sets appeal to both literary and design lovers alike — pieces of art across the spines that line the shelves.

A room without books is like a body without a soul, the philosophical Roman statesman Marcus Tullius Cicero is thought to have said — long before Johannes Gutenberg’s printing press produced its first book in the 1400s.

It did not take long for that art to expand to entire bookshelves, with hundreds of books forming one giant mural.

Mr. Wine’s own home office, one of many book collections throughout the house, is free of designer jackets, save for the many Juniper Books sets, and showcases favorite authors such as Kurt Vonnegut and J.D. Salinger.

“The great thing about having a book collection is that there are truly infinite combinations of books,” Mr. Wine says. “And it’s so personal. I would never say you have to have any book in your collection. Except for my book, of course.”

The aforementioned book, For the Love of Books: Designing and Curating a Home Library (Gibbs Smith), co-authored with Elizabeth Lane, is a doit-yourself guide to the Juniper Books approach to library curation. It starts with filling in your collection with thrillers, local history, ancient poetry, Southern gothics, philosophy, female authors, evolutionary biology studies, golf — whatever it is that you like. Then empty the shelves and get ready to fill them back up.

IN THE DIGITAL days of carefully crafted social media posts, a person’s library and the books that she has amassed and carried with her through life may be a more accurate window into her soul, a collection of paper, but also what she has learned, what she cares about and even who she aspires to be. This reminder is one reason Mr. Wine thinks his tech friends were wrong about printed books going the way of the dodo. And besides, publishing experts such as himself have upped their game by adding that sought-after design element.

bookshelves, but should.

Are these books related because they’re all about Paris? Or maybe you bought them all in Paris, or they’re French authors. Whatever the theme is, it tends to kind of emerge if you’re starting from scratch and you give yourself some space to do different Experimentgroupings.”withplacing groupings vertically, horizontally, alphabetically, by color, by size — and then add a few objects in between. With your Paris collection you may place a memento from a trip there, an Eiffel Tower sculpture or a framed photo taken there.

“People spend so much time and resources on every element of [their home] — the carpets, the tile, the paint — and then historically when they got to the books they’re like, ‘oh, we just have to go to the store and buy books,’” Mr. Wine says.

NC LIVING FALL 2022 89

The libraries that Mr. Wine has created are as varied as his clients. In a Texas project, clean, rainbow-hued jackets cover the books in the massive library to offset the otherwise neutral color scheme. In childhood friend Gwyneth Paltrow’s home, he filled the shelves with subjects near and dear to her such as art, travel, fashion and design, all with a bright and spacious vibe.

“Some purists say books are just books, books are just for reading, but I just don’t think that’s true,” he says. “They should fulfill a function around your house, and I think they do. They have for 500 years, and hopefully they will for 500 more.”

SHOW SOME SPINE

“Plan on it taking some time, pour a glass of wine, invite a friend over, put some music on,” Mr. Wine advises. “And then start to put things back one at a time and try to find the themes.

“The response of the book world to the potential for extinction has been to make books better,” Mr. Wine says. “It’s basically what Juniper Books does. We want to make books that people want to have in their house and keep forever. It’s not a disposable object.”

“So, if you want all the books to be cream and gold because that fits in with this very elegant interior, let’s do it,” he says. “We can make that happen. And we can still get you really good books that you want to read.”

“We’ve really liberated them and said no, if you can dream it up, we can create it. And we can dream it up with you, too.”

“That can really help tell the story of who you are across the bookshelves,” Mr. Wine says. “And that, at the end of the day, I think, is what we’re all trying to do, whether we know it or not. Just to tell the story of who we are in our homes — to the people that come into our homes, if we’re on a Zoom call, or even as just a reminder to ourselves.”

Silver Creek Real Estate Group Broker, Rick Jackson, serves as the Director of the Friends of Lake Glenville Doug Odell scholarship program, a cause close to his heart. “As a homeowner on Lake Glenville since 2008, my interest in protecting and preserving the lake is in perfect alignment with the core values of Friends of Lake Glenville,” he says.

Launched in 2020 with the help of Rick and Lisa Jackson, the Doug Odell Scholarship expands on Mr. Odell’s vision. The program encourages higher education in Science by awarding scholarships to graduating seniors from Blue Ridge Early College who can then apply the award money toward a college of their choice.

Through diligent fundraising efforts, FLG was able to award two scholarships to qualified graduating seniors in their first year. Now in 2022, they have expanded to a total of $15,000, supporting three individuals in their studies. Their 2023 goal of raising the bar hopes to expand the benefit to four students who will each be awarded a $5,000 scholarship, while past winners have the potential to receive additional funds towards their 2023 enrollment if they meet certain criteria. Friends of Lake Glenville is continuously expanding its efforts to provide a long-lasting resource through the Doug Odell Scholarship. Their next goal is

92 SILVER CREEK REAL ESTATE GROUP

The program, honoring one of FLG’s founding members Doug Odell, carries on his legacy through the organization’s core mission to preserve, protect, educate and advocate for the beauty, integrity, and survival of Lake Glenville. “Beyond the lake, Doug Odell had another vision for the FLG - to get involved and support the local community,” says Jackson, “This scholarship program named after him does just that.”

to the expansive shoreline, the lake boasts three waterfalls - Norton, Hurricane, and Mill Creek - all of which are only viewable from the lake. A fourth waterfall, High Falls - is located just below the dam and is accessible via a hiking trail accessible to the public.

What once was the location of the town of Hamburgh, Lake Glenville (originally Thorpe Reservoir) was formed in 1941 when Nantahala Power and Light dammed the west fork of the Tuckasegee River to generate power for the Aluminum Company of America (ALCOA) during World War II. This action effectively flooded the valley and all homes, businesses, and farmlands in the area; many of these structures still exist over 300 feet below the surface of Glenville’s placid exterior!

Fishermen can also rejoice as Lake Glenville is home to a wide variety of fish species. From spotted, small, and largemouth bass, to walleye, yellow perch, crappies, and both brown and rainbow trout, all anglers will enjoy casting a line to discover what awaits their bait. The pockets, points, coves, islands, and channels of the lake create a hospitable environment in which many of these species thrive well into the cooler months when the changing mountain air brings out trophy-sized smallmouth bass.

Desiring a day on the water? Head to Signal Ridge Marina or Lakeshore Marina where you can rent pontoons and tritoons for daily or longterm use, and bring the whole family as pets are always welcome. These flexible rentals are perfect no matter how long you plan to stay and play. Whether you are seeking a leisurely cruise to view the abundant wildlife and vibrant colors, or you are looking for a fast-paced watersports experience, the helpful staff at the Signal Ridge and Lakeshore Marinas stand ready to set you up for a memorable day on the water.

Championing its conservation, the local nonprofit organization, Friends of Lake Glenville (FLG) is an association of residents, property owners, member businesses, and individuals dedicated to maintaining Lake Glenville’s natural beauty and integrity. From testing water quality and encouraging boater safety, to hosting lake clean-up days and awarding scholarships, FLG continues to ensure Lake Glenville retains its beauty for all to enjoy.

For those that want to bring their own water toys to the lake, there are two public access areas located on the north side - the Powerhouse Access Area and Pine Creek Access - providing boat ramps, launching docks, and bathrooms.

Additionally, there is a public recreation area with picnic tables, a fishing pier, a swimming area with beach access, and bathrooms for those that want a casual and fun-filled day at the beach.

to establish a reserve for the future so they may continue to build upon scholarship funds and expand their reach across the community. All this would not be possible without the generous donations made by local residents and businesses, along with the dedication of advocates like Rick who work to bring the community together and raise money to support local students. No matter the time of year, Lake Glenville and its welcoming community set the perfect scene for your day of recreation and relaxation. From soaking up the sun on its shores to motoring through the pristine water, there are infinite reasons to escape to this picturesque mountain lake and make memories more special with friends and family.

At the Green Market, enjoy getting to know the source as you meet the local growers who produce the goods that adorn the tables in front of you. This community not only congregates to fill each other’s fridges with the most natural ingredients possible but also to share a combined wealth of local knowledge. All vendors at the market are required to cultivate products from within a 125-mile radius of Cashiers. So that basket of strawberries you take home is about as fresh from the source as it gets. Why not brighten your day or someone else’s with a freshly cut floral bouquet for the table and some delicious homemade fudge? Stop by Trufflehunter Farms to stock up on homegrown microgreens, and stock your freezer with a selection of quality pork and beef cuts from Dean at Durm Family Farm - we hear they have some of the best pork chops and breakfast sausages around . Garden fresh organic tomatoes, lettuce, squash, locally foraged mushrooms, and a variety of herbs can be found here. Impossible to miss are the honey and hand-made soaps from David at Honey Mountain Bee Farm . On Wednesdays and Saturdays from April to October, the stands of Cashiers’ Green Market in the Village Green, and Highlands Farmers Market in Kelsey-Hutchinson Park are aflutter with activity. The vendors at these markets know firsthand what it takes to provide quality goods, as these local suppliers offer everything from honey and spices to farm-fresh eggs and freshly baked goods. As we strive to become more conscious eaters, many of us seek to supply ourselves (and our families) with the highest-quality, locally grown, and hand-raised ingredients available. When it comes to food: the closer to the source the better.

A native of Germany, Chef Klapdohrs’ passion for the culinary arts runs deep in his veins. “I was blessed to grow up in a family that was four generations of chefs,” he remarked.

“My father was very adamant that I take an apprenticeship somewhere quite like this, preferably in the mountains where we would do everything ourselves. The hunters would bring in deer, white boar, and pheasants, then we would do all of the butchering and preparation…it was a marvelous education from the ground up.” Years later he would go on to work alongside world-renowned chefs at Michelin Star restaurants, hotels, and resorts around Germany and the United States.

Cloaked in the serenity of Sapphire Valley, you will find a remarkable culinary experience awaits you at the Library Kitchen + Bar. Conceptualized by the dynamic pairing of artists and Co-Owners – Michelin-star trained Chef, Johannes Klapdohr, and worldrenowned artist Marvin Gralnick, The Library is a true valley gem. Immediately upon entering the historic building, you are greeted by Gralnicks eclectic and colorful art which adorns the walls; patrons are captured by animated conversations as they sip hand-crafted cocktails, and the distinctive smells wafting from the open chef’s kitchen into the dining area. The old-growth forests of the Plateau are a haven for mycophiles – also referred to as mushroom-lovers. Blessed with a true four-season temperate climate and a broad range of elevations, the Blue Ridge Mountains are a goldmine of biodiversity. Among our trees, rivers, lakes, and air, live hundreds of amphibian, reptile, bird, and mammal species, an estimated 4,000 species of plants, 2,000 species of fungi, and 500 different types of moss and lichen. Here, life flourishes, and the mushroom-loving subculture has taken note. Sound wild? Just take a look at the continuously growing 16,000 member “North Carolina Mushroom Group” on Facebook.

A practice dating back centuries, edible mushrooms have long been sought after and collected by people around the world. As a great source of protein and dietary fiber, they not only enhance our dishes but offer a host of nutritional and medicinal benefits – providing you pick the right ones!

Some taste like chicken, some nutty and earthy, some brightly colored and some pale as white, some delicious in any dish, and others will kill you outright.

On Wednesdays at the Green Market in Cashiers Village Green, the Many Hands Peace Farm, a part of The Mountain Retreat & Learning Center, can be found selling their locally foraged fungi. From the foraging months of May to September, this educational farm offers a variety of workshops that teach you how to forage and cultivate your own mushrooms. In addition to helping you identify edible and inedible mushrooms, the Farms Foraging Tour educates you on a variety of edible and medicinal plant species, ethical foraging practices, and the best methods for preparation and storage. Their Mushroom Cultivation Workshop will teach you everything you need to know about the life-cycle and propagation of Oyster, Wine Cap, and Shiitake mushrooms – and you even get to leave with your own inoculated Shiitake mini-log to watch them grow from the comfort of your own home. Asked for his advice for the aspiring mushroom hunter, Certified Forager Cole Madison says, “Research, learn as much as you can, and never munch on a hunch!”

These mushrooms habitually grow amongst look-alikes that are harmless in toxicity, which highlights the need for careful assessment of every organism collected. Most little brown mushrooms will pose this challenge, and for this reason, many foragers choose to forgo them all together to avoid the risk.

approached with extreme caution, or avoided completely. Containing a similar type of toxin, the Galerina marginata , or Deadly Galerina, is a widespread but lesser looked upon fungi due to its small size in nature and ordinary brown color.

On this, any mushroom forager will agree – this is a craft that requires time, patience, and above all else - knowledge. One bad experience with a mushroom is one too many and could be your last if you’re not careful. Mushroom foraging is a regulated practice, and professional foragers must demonstrate their competency through identification to sell any harvested goods. So chances are, those mushrooms you picked up at the Green Market were harvested by a Master Forager who is certified by the state in their craft. This knowledge, however, is accessible to anyone in the community that wants to get out and learn to harvest safely. Mushroom Mountain, located just across the state line in Easley, South Carolina, is a respected educational resource for those wishing to simply learn, or earn their certification to begin foraging like a pro.

A Field Guide to Mushrooms of the Carolinas by Alan E. Bessette, Arleen R. Bessette, and Michael W. Hopping is also a must-have resource for any fledgling mycophile. Including full-color photographs, these authors introduce 650 mushroom species that can be found in the Carolinas, detailing their edibility (or toxicity) and key details to assist with identifying what you have found. View the land with a fresh perspective through a new hobby as you get out and explore all that the Plateau has to offer, including the fantastic world of our diverse and abundant fungi. You will marvel at their complex shapes, vibrant colors, and intricate details as you explore the forest and discover each new specimen. And, what’s better than 2,000 new reasons to stay and play on the Highlands-Cashiers Plateau?

At the center of life in Lonesome Valley is the commitment to living in thoughtful harmony with the environment, and in careful stewardship of the protection of the land. Since its beginning as a family farmstead in the late 1800s, the fundamental ethos of family and nature has remained at the forefront. In keeping with this ethos, the team at Loudermilk has designed this home to complement its natural setting. “We carefully position each home to take complete advantage of the stunning mountain views, natural sun patterns as well as natural shade to minimize energy consumption and reduce the carbon footprint of the home,” said Loudermilk. A core component of their design consideration is energy efficiency and “green” building techniques which help reduce the home’s impact on the environment, as well as long-term costs of living in the home.
