CREEK EXPERIENCE PERSPECTIVE
THE SILVER
A LETTER FROM OUR PRESIDENT
There is nothing quite like the charm of winter on the Highlands-Cashiers Plateau. The blanket of morning frost that makes our landscape glisten, the soft plumes of smoke that trail from snow-covered chimneys, and the spectacular sunsets of cooler weather are all things we have come to cherish this time of year.
As our community continues to grow with more fulltime residents, so too does our love for our Western North Carolina home. For many in the Southeast, the Plateau has long been a generational escape from the heat and humidity, offering four distinct seasons in which to enjoy our wonderful community. But for those of us who call the Plateau home year-round, we have found the peaceful, quiet lifestyle and immense natural beauty too captivating to leave.
Winter is a time of rest and renewal on the Plateau, and each year we look forward to the opportunities that the colder weather brings. We spend time reconnecting with friends and family, we set our goals and intentions for the new year, and we relish the tranquility that spreads throughout our cozy mountain community.
This has been yet another great year for Silver Creek Real Estate Group, and without our loyal clients and accomplished brokers who bring their passion, expertise, and unique market insight to each transaction, this success would not be possible. In reflecting on 2022, I am grateful to have continued our growth on the Plateau, welcomed new members to our team and fostered deeper connections within our community.
Although the real estate market is ever-changing, Silver Creek Real Estate Group remains committed to providing exceptional experiences for all of our clients. Backed by world-class in-house marketing and extensive local knowledge, our team of dedicated brokers is actively listing and selling on the Plateau year-round. We understand that real estate transactions can be daunting, and should you engage us to buy or sell your property, you will find a trusted partner who will stand at your side and represent your best interests through the entire process.
Wherever you find yourself this season, I invite you to cozy up with this Winter 2023 issue of NC Living Magazine and share in the spirit of new beginnings on the Highlands-Cashiers Plateau.

A RENEWED LOOK AT MARBLE STRUCTURES AND THEIR SUSTAINABLE FUTURE
words by linsey stonchus
Few building materials make the statement that marble does. The stone’s exquisite beauty feels tied to the mountains and earth that it is pulled from, all the while balancing this ruggedness with a polished finish and the glitzy inflections of minerals. Its use in architecture and sculpture across all continents and over millennia is nonpareil.
“From monuments to temples to buildings and art, marble has been used for thousands of years by civilizations all over the world,” says Sarah Cole, designer and owner of Boston, Massachusettsbased Sarah Cole Interiors.

“In addition to its durability, marble has earned a reputation of being a symbol of luxury and taste,” she says. “It is ubiquitous and, at the same time, unique. No two slabs of marble are exactly the same, and its natural beauty is in part what makes it timeless.”
Marble is a limestone crystallized by metamorphism, ranging from granular to compact in texture. Its ability to take a high polish is one of its key advantages over any other natural materials sourced from nature.
The stone’s luxury status is rooted in its distinguished past. More sculptures have been carved from marble than any other stone in history, attaching a nobility to the honoree that no other material can achieve.
Its use as a building material conveys a similar message of grace.
“Each stone has its own say in history, because emperors, czars, nobles of the past and present have always loved and used this material,” says Alessandra Malagoli Budri, art director of marble manufacturer Budri, Mirandola, Italy. “When a designer decides to use marble, it is because it expresses all these noble characteristics.”
From the Roman Pantheon and India’s Taj Mahal to the Acropolis in Athens and Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque of Abu Dhabi clad in Sivec marble from Macedonia, the stone has made various statements throughout history via inspiring structures.
Now, marble is entering a more sustainable era.
DISTINGUISHED PAST
Marble stands the test of time. The buildings and structures of ancient Greece and Rome continue to inspire awe even after thousands of years of regime changes and weather.
“Statues created during the Classical and Hellenistic periods in Greece stand out as some of the finest,” Ms. Cole says. “The Greeks were incredibly skilled in naturalistic representation in marble.”
Such works maintain their influence in the present day.
“Fortunately, in Italy we are surrounded by beautiful architecture built or covered with extraordinary marbles, from basilicas to entire squares — prestigious buildings,” Ms. Budri says. “In our work, the art director and designers are frequently inspired by these architectures.”
Even architecture in the much younger United States was greatly inspired by that of the Greeks and Romans.
“Washington, D.C., is one of my favorite cities with great examples of marble in architecture throughout the city,” Ms. Cole says. “The grand marble staircase in the Library of Congress is breathtaking and one of my personal favorites.”
One of Washington’s most recognizable structures, the Lincoln Memorial, was built with marble sourced from Alabama, Colorado, Georgia, Massachusetts and Tennessee, according to the National Park Service. Its architect, Henry Bacon, made this decision intentionally to symbolize President Lincoln’s importance to the union.
Another northeastern U.S. city, Boston, widely embraced marble during the late 19th and 20th centuries.
“Great examples can be found in the Boston Public Library, Wang Center for Performing Arts and The Boston Opera House, all of which feature lavish uses of marble: doorways, stairs, walls with ornate carvings and marble statues,” Ms. Cole says.
SOPHISTICATED PRESENT
How marble is used boils down to the buildings it inhabits, whether that be residential, commercial or public spaces.
“Marble has the power to be either traditional or contemporary, depending on the type and application, and it has the ability to bridge the gap between old and new,” Ms. Cole says.
“For that reason, it’s an incredible material when updating Boston’s trove of historic homes without losing that vital connection to the past.”
NC LIVING WINTER 2023 13
In showcasing its marble, Budri has collaborated with designers on various projects, such as the Grand Zayed Mosque in Abu Dhabi, for which it created more than 20,000 square meters of intricate, floral inlays both inside and out.
Retail spaces, on the other hand, often opt for trendy over traditional.
The use of marble at skiwear and jacket maker Moncler’s Singapore store is sleek and futuristic, while MSGM in London, known for its streetwear, is more playful and edgy, experimenting with non-traditional colors.
Italian fashion brand Dolce & Gabbana, meanwhile, varies its designs based on the location of each store.
“The Dolce & Gabbana boutique in London, designed by Gwenael Nicolas, was awarded for the outstanding design of Budri marbles, with particular attention to the monumental and twisting marble staircase,” Ms. Budri says.
GREEN FUTURE
Like many luxury industries, marble is in the early phases of a more sustainable era.
“The Fragment Collection is the first collection born with Budri SLIM marble,” Ms. Budri says. “In this case, the marble used for the furniture is only three millimeters thick. In previous collections, the thickness of marble varied from one to two centimeters.”
The collection is a long time coming, as Budri’s research and development department has been working towards sustainability for more than 10 years to combat the impact that excavation has on the environment.
“In our own Italy, for example, in the Apuan Alps of the beautiful region [of] Tuscany, a wild and growing excavation has changed the landscape and geomorphology,” Ms. Budri says. “This can happen anywhere.”
“We want to prevent future generations from criticizing us for not having understood and acted in time,” she says.
“The ultra-thin Budri SLIM Marble, acronym of Sustainable Light Innovative Marble, is a revolution in this sector: working with thinner surfaces means reducing the excavation of the material, which otherwise has a destroying impact on nature.”
“In addition, transport and related costs are reduced, making it 80 percent lighter than traditional 20-millimeter marble. Moreover, handling the stone becomes less hard for the workers.”
The Fragment Collection was designed by Mr. Nicolas, the designer who worked on Dolce & Gabbana’s London boutique, with fashion’s influence apparent.
“The peculiarity of the collection is to discover that through the use of marble fragments — in this case, rods cut from residual slabs — you can create interesting patterns that visually create the effect of a
14 SILVER CREEK REAL ESTATE GROUP
fabric,”Ms. Budri says.
“The highlight of the collection is the Chandelier, composed of three-millimeter-thick marble rods and bent-arched,” she says. “This design element contains exactly what was not expected from marble, which is lightness and flexibility.”
DESPITE MARBLE’S long history, it continues to be used in fresh, new ways. It is a go-to for a reason, and its popularity is showing no signs of slowing.
“If it’s natural wood, it might only have existed for a couple of decades or a couple of centuries, but marble has existed for millennia, and to have a little piece of that in your home or in your furniture, I think, is why it’s been so timeless,” says Anthony Laney, co-founder of Los Angeles-based architecture firm Laney LA.
“In that sense, we’re not reinventing the wheel,” he says. “We’re going to continue the tradition.”

In the Land Of the Midnight Sun
16 SILVER CREEK REAL ESTATE GROUP
NC LIVING WINTER 2023 17
words by delaney asbury photography by izaak holsapple
Her terrain is rugged and unforgiving, her valleys vast, and her snow-capped peaks soaring. Her expansive tundra is braided by thousands of rivers, and her boreal forests and crystalline blue waters teem with life. Her storied history steeped in rich indigenous culture has inspired millions, and her tales of adventure and triumph are passed on to each new generation. She is the last frontier, the land of the midnight sun, and the most indescribable union of ecological regions on this planet; she is Alaska.
Diverse in topography and climate, Alaska is one of the most unique and naturally bountiful places in the world. More than twice the size of Texas, the far-reaching landscape is home to many national parks, preserves, monuments, and national historical parks, with roughly 60% of all land federally managed by the National Park Service. Only three of Alaska’s National Parks, Denali, Kenai Fjords, and Wrangell-St. Elias, are accessible by car, with the other five accessible by plane or boat. While this may seem inconvenient to those unfamiliar with the immensity of her territory, the impact of the raw and undisturbed backcountry experienced in traveling to Alaska’s more remote destinations cannot be understated.
Take for example, Kobuk Valley National Park. Situated north of the Arctic Circle, Kobuk Valley is home to towering arctic dunes (some reaching up to 200 ft high) and seasonal migrations of 500,000 caribou. There are no facilities or services available, just an uninterrupted 1.75 million acres of remote backcountry where proper planning and
preparation pay dividends.
Trips to isolated destinations like Kobuk Valley can cost a pretty penny between hiring knowledgeable guides and chartering a plane to get you there (and back) safely; however, the rewards are high with unspeakably ethereal landscapes witnessed by only a daring few.
To experience true Alaska, one must venture outside the bounds of comfort and immerse themselves in the austere terrain of the regions less traveled. While places like Denali National Park are popular among tourists for the accessibility of their captivating scenery, if you venture a little further, you might see things you never thought possible.
This picturesque state is divided into five distinct regions: Inside Passage, Southcentral, Interior, Arctic, and Southwest. Each part is unique, from the native cultures and communities to the weather, sub-regions, and wildlife. No matter where you are in Alaska, you will be graced with some permutation of these elements. Still, depending on your interests, certain regions may bode better for your adventures than others.
Climbers may want to head to the Interior to tackle Denali, North America’s tallest peak. At
18 SILVER CREEK REAL ESTATE GROUP
the same time, boaters and kayakers will revel in exploring the coves, bays, and glaciers of Prince William Sound in the Southcentral region.
For those who have dreamed of witnessing the stunning phenomenon that is aurora borealis (the northern lights), heading to the Arctic Circle might be the best call. In today’s adventure, we will travel to the Southwest and Inside Passage to chase fins in the world’s largest sockeye salmon run and discover the wonders of the tidewater glaciers and wildlife-filled fjords of Alaska’s Pacific coastline.
SOUTHWESTERN ALASKA
A region as diverse in its landscapes as it is in its activities, Southwestern Alaska is a naturalist and adventurer’s paradise. The scenery is second to none, from the volcanic terrain of Katmai National Park and Preserve to the rugged, windswept Aleutian Islands on the coast. The Southwest is home to a healthy population of brown bears,
within the Nushagak and Kvichak watersheds. Firmly bound by their environmental connection, native communities like the Yup’ik and Dena’ina are considered to be some of the last-standing sustainable salmon-based cultures worldwide.
As wondrous as the great migration across the plains of Africa, millions of sockeye journey to their natal streams each year to spawn in protected, well-oxygenated fresh water. In 2022 alone, the Alaska Department of Fish and Game reported a total run of over 76 million sockeye salmon between the Bay’s Ugashik, Egegik, NaknekKvichak, Nushagak, and Togiak fisheries. Perhaps the most marvelous display of evolutionary ability, these fish travel hundreds, if not thousands of miles, to reach their destination, relying on the earth’s magnetic field and a highly developed sense of smell to guide them home. To see the salmon run in Bristol Bay is to witness an awe-inspiring feat of natural instinct and perseverance.
Salmon season peaks in the summer, with the five major species running upstream from May to
more than 240 bird species, and the world’s largest wild sockeye salmon fishery - Bristol Bay.
The Bristol Bay watershed is a vital habitat for various animal species, including 29 species of fish, more than 190 birds, and more than 40 land mammals. A coveted location among anglers, fishing in Bristol Bay affords opportunities to catch all five species of Pacific salmon in North America: sockeye, coho, chinook (or king), chum, and pink. According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), approximately half of Bristol Bay’s sockeye salmon production flows from the Nushagak and Kvichak River watersheds, the largest of Bristol Bay’s six major river basins.
For thousands of years, these watersheds have provided a way of life for indigenous communities whose cultures are deeply rooted in hunting, gathering, and the subsistence harvesting of wild salmon. Bristol Bay is home to 25 federally recognized tribal governments, 14 of which are
November. Iconic chinook (king) salmon fishing typically begins in May and stays active through late July. Chum salmon typically run from mid-June to mid-August, while pink and sockeye salmon are on the move from mid-July to mid-August. From July to November, the spawn wraps up with a run of silver coho salmon.
There is no better way to experience the best of sport fishing in Southwestern Alaska than with one of the region’s premier fly-out fishing lodges. While there are some options to choose from depending on your desired fishing and sightseeing, one place stands out - Mission Lodge.
In a class of its own, Mission Lodge is uniquely positioned in the region with access to waters untouched by any other lodge or anglers (aside from the locals). In the heart of Bristol Bay, nestled on Lake Aleknagik, Mission Lodge has welcomed
NC LIVING WINTER 2023 19
those with a spirit for adventure and passion for angling for over thirty years. Owned by Bristol Bay Native Corporation, celebration of the area’s wealth of history, culture, and natural resources is always at the core of what they do.
Your journey to Mission Lodge will begin in Anchorage, where you will load your bags onto one of Katmai Air’s Pilatus PC-12s for your private charter flight to Dillingham. Although just an hour’s flight, you will catch your first views of the backcountry from above as you fly over Cook’s Inlet and Lake Clark National Park. If you are lucky enough for clear skies, spectacular views will keep you entertained right up until the lodge’s staff whisk you from the tarmac to one of their waiting transportation shuttles.
Upon arrival, you will receive the warmest of welcomes from the lodge’s General Manager and its exceptional staff. After shaking hands with your new family for the week, they will show you to your room, issue your Alaska fishing license, and serve you delicious appetizers and house-crafted cocktails. Settle in and soak up the magical sunset over Lake Aleknagik from the back porch and get ready for a fabulous three-course wine dinner prepared by the in-house chef and culinary team. Scrumptious desserts, home-baked bread and pastries, freshly caught salmon, and gigantic King Crab legs are a few things you may indulge in throughout the week. Before retiring for a good night’s rest and your first day of fishing, the lodge’s head guide will meet with you to discuss your itinerary for the following day.
At Mission Lodge, you choose your adventure. You tell them what you want to catch or what you want to see, and they will make it happen, weather and season permitting of course. Each morning will begin with the smell of hot coffee wafting through the lodge halls, inviting you to wander downstairs for a hearty breakfast buffet before your action-packed day. Part of the magic here is walking out to the guideboard each morning to see where you’ll be headed, which guides you’ll be fishing with, and how you’ll be getting there, as each day holds something different.
As a fly-out lodge, Mission offers the opportunity to fish on rivers, lakes, streams, and creeks across the Southwestern region. Deep in the heart of Bristol Bay, their location affords a range of travel that not many other lodges can compete with. Mission has over 40 boats stashed throughout the region, and most days, you will find yourself hopping into one of their three De Havilland Beaver float planes to fly to your destination. Some days your guide(s) will join you for the flight, and others, you may meet them at one of the lodge’s river outposts where they have everything set up and ready for the day. Depending on where you are going, these flights can range from ten minutes to an hour and a half, but rest assured, this will quickly become one of your favorite modes of transportation.
There is nothing quite like taking off and landing on the water — the thrill of the approach, the deft and calculated maneuvering by your pilot as he picks the perfect bend of the river to touch down, and the buttery smoothness of the water underneath as you taxi to shore. As you travel through the skies, you will see parts of the backcountry unseen and untouched by any other, often flying low enough to spot bears and moose meandering in the dense brush below. You will see more lakes, ponds, and snaking rivers than you ever knew existed, and possibly even a herd of caribou grazing the tundra.
When fishing you will likely go to the Togiak River, a robust fishery known for its populations of all five species of Pacific Salmon, as well as rainbow trout and Dolly Varden. During king salmon season, Mission’s Togiak Camp is the center of the action. On the Togiak, you may float for the day or hop out occasionally to floss for sockeye salmon from the shore; either way, it’s the perfect time to fill your freezer with some fresh fish to take home. While floating the Togiak, you may spot brown bears, moose, caribou, eagles, and even the elusive lynx. Lunch each day will be served streamside, and depending on location, it could be a fresh catch cooked up by the guides or pre-made sandwiches with chips, cookies, fruit, candy bars, and hot and cold beverages.
No matter where your fishing takes you, you are never far from a reminder of whose home you are visiting. You will see tracks in the mud—big ones,
20 SILVER CREEK REAL ESTATE GROUP
NC LIVING WINTER 2023 21
and lots of them. You will see piles of bear scat on the riverbanks and half-eaten salmon discarded along the shores. And you will likely hear some rustling and crunching in the forest at some point. Nothing, however, is more of an adrenaline rush than looking upstream to discover that another “fisherman” has come out of the brush to observe the commotion. The wildlife is everywhere, but that’s what makes Alaska what it is, wild.
Fishing with Mission Lodge will take you to places you thought only existed in movies. Take for example Mirror Bay and Portage Arm in Nuyakuk Lake, where your flight is almost as exquisite as the fishing ahead. As you approach the Lake through granite peaks shrouded in low-lying clouds and mist, the views quickly turn otherworldly; turquoise water meets a sheer rock face blanketed in lush green
commonly called, is distinctive with its iridescent blue/gold dorsal fin. Though they do not grow large (the state record is 3.9 lbs.), they prove quite an intriguing catch for those used to more common freshwater species like trout.
With more potential destinations than you can count, each day provides new and exciting ways to see different parts of the region, covering up to 120 miles in any direction. Fish rivers like the Agulawok, the Upper and Lower Nushagak, and Ongoke. Explore small streams and creeks that require more technical fishing or toss out some spoons in a lake for a chance at a massive Northern pike. Some rivers like the Ongoke host small populations of rare trophy-size wild rainbow trout. For many trout fishermen, this is a
vegetation that surrounds you in every direction. At some points, you might not even feel like you are in Alaska as the utter scale, vibrant color, and untamed beauty is more reminiscent of Jurassic Park. Even more captivating is spotting groups of thousands of crimson-red salmon schooled up in the blue water from above.
At Mirror Bay, you can fish for salmon and some of Alaska’s resident freshwater species, including Arctic char, Arctic grayling, and lake trout. Those who have never seen an Arctic grayling are in for a real treat. The sailfish of the North, as it is
once-in-a-lifetime chance to land a rainbow that is entirely a product of its environmentno hatchery, no additives, and 100% wild. With commercial and special use permits, the lodge can operate within the protected areas of Katmai National Park, the Togiak National Wildlife Refuge, and Wood Tikchik State Park.
If you need a break from fishing, consider a day trip to the legendary Brooks Falls, where brown bears wade at the base of the falls waiting to snag sockeye salmon from the air as they propel themselves upstream. First, you will stop at Brooks
22 SILVER CREEK REAL ESTATE GROUP
Camp for a short bear safety briefing, and from there, you will follow the woodland paths to the falls viewing platform where the bears gather along the riverbank. You may encounter a bear on the trail, so it’s essential to pay close attention. Stop and fish on the way home or take a detour and catch an aerial view of Katmai’s Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes, where hundreds of years of volcanic activity created deep ash-carved gorges and canyons.
Aside from the world-class fishing and magnificent scenery, the best thing about Mission Lodge is without a doubt its people. While there, you feel as though you are at home with your family. The lodge’s staff
of the area and some first-hand insight into what it is like to be a fly-fishing guide in remote Alaska. Ask away, because they have some serious tales to tell!
A typical stay at Mission Lodge is seven nights and six fishing days, arriving on Friday and leaving the following Friday. However, trips of alternate lengths can also be accommodated based on availability. The lodge traditionally accommodates twenty guests, with the ability to host up to twenty-four upon request. Pricing includes lodging, all meals, and drinks at the lodge (including the fully stocked bar), daily guided fishing, use of all tackle, waders and boots, daily fly-outs, taxes, fuel service charges, fishing licenses, and private charters between Anchorage and Dillingham. Want to take home some of your salmon
provides everything you could want or need during your stay. When you wake up, they serve piping hot coffee and breakfast, and when you come off the water, they appear with a warm towel and what is sure to become a fast favorite: the cocktail of the day. Throughout your stay, you will have the pleasure of working with many of Mission Lodge’s seasoned guides, each wellversed in their respective techniques, styles, and fisheries. Spending time learning from these professionals who are passionate about fishing and the environment they work in is inspiring for the angler in us all. You will gain local knowledge

CRUISING THE INSIDE PASSAGE
Alaska’s 500-mile-long Inside Passage will transport you back in time. Witness the extraordinary shaping power of nature as you take in the region’s deep coastal fjords and flourishing islands carved out by glaciers over millions of years. The vast majority of the Inside Passage is covered by the Tongas National Forest, the largest national forest in the United States and the largest intact temperate rainforest in the world. This region is also rich in indigenous culture and history and is home to several native groups, including the Tlingit, Haida, and Tsimshian.
Within the Inside Passage are popular towns like Juneau, Ketchikan, Petersburg, Sitka, Skagway, and Wrangell. Perhaps one of the most incredible national parks in the world, Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve is also one of the top stops along the Inside Passage, with select cruise lines permitted to operate within its waters. For many of these coastal communities, the primary means of transportation involves the Alaska Marine Highway, which ferries passengers to over 35 ports stretching from Bellingham, Washington, to Prince Rupert, British Columbia. While one could hop on the Alaska Marine Highway and explore the Inside Passage at their own pace, one of the more comfortable ways to do this is by setting sail on one of the many cruise ships that frequent the area.
With so many options, you can customize your Inside Passage experience to exactly what you want. Choose the length of your cruise and the port you leave from. Pick an itinerary that hits all your desired spots and fill it with exciting excursions that get you out, about, and exploring. If it fits your travel plans, consider one of the itineraries setting out from Whittier to allow you more time in the great land prior to your cruise.
Arrive in Anchorage a few days before your departure and catch up on your rest at the Anchorage Marriott Downtown. Within walking
distance to plenty of shops and restaurants, you can spend a day exploring the city, gathering any last-minute necessities, and grabbing a bite to eat at the Glacier Brewhouse, just a few blocks from your hotel.
Stay a night or two at the Alyeska Resort in nearby Girdwood the following day. One of Alaska’s premier destinations for skiing in the winter and a point of access to the Chugach National Forest, Girdwood is a playground for outdoor adventure, no matter the time of year. Take a leisurely walk on the pristine grounds, sip cocktails and enjoy appetizers in one of their lounges, and dine in their fine restaurants. The Seven Glaciers restaurant, located at the top of the ski hill gondola, is an absolute must.
While in Girdwood, another absolute must is a helicopter glacier tour. It is one thing to witness these glaciers from a distance, but to take in the massive expanses of ice, snow, rock, and sediment from above is truly something else. Some of these tours even allow you to land on top of a glacier, where you can view the deep crevasses of bright blue ice and whirling moulins from up close. You will walk on top of history as you explore a river of ice that has been carving away at the landscape for thousands of years.
Before heading out to Whittier to meet your cruise ship, stop by the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center to see some of the state’s most wellknown creatures. Established on over 200 acres of walkable, drivable, and bikeable land, you can view moose, reindeer, elk, bears, wolves, and many others in spacious habitats that enable them to live as they would in the wild. Continue along the Seward Highway and prepare to hold your breath for the Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel, which takes you to Prince William Sound; this is the longest highway tunnel in North America at 2.5 miles! Board your ship, settle in with a warm drink on the viewing deck and get ready to set sail along the Inside Passage.

Depending on your itinerary, you may stop at several destinations and viewing points, such as Hubbard Glacier, Glacier Bay National Park, Juneau, Ketchikan, and Skagway, offering opportunities to observe from the comfort of your suite or disembark and explore the mainland.
As you cruise into Disenchantment Bay, you will be nothing short of enchanted with the views before you. Towering above is Hubbard Glacier, the largest tidewater glacier in North America, measuring 76 miles
The following day, wake up bright and early to catch your first glimpses of the majestic Glacier Bay National Park. With no port, this will be a full day of cruising and sightseeing among the park’s emerald waters. Your ship will stop briefly at Bartlett Cove to welcome Park Rangers aboard, who will spend the day chronicling your journey into the heart of the Fairweather Mountains. Pay close attention as they often announce animal sightings in the waters and on the shores of the nearby islands. Glacier Bay is chock full of wildlife, and with a keen eye, you can spot anything from brown bears, humpback whales, and porpoises to harbor seals, mountain goats, and sizable seabird colonies. The park’s
long. Nicknamed “the galloping glacier,” Hubbard is rapidly advancing towards the Bay, where it plunges 1,200 feet below the water’s silty surface. While you can take in the striking views from anywhere on your ship, many cruises feature a smaller vessel that brings you closer to Hubbard’s face, where you may witness the extraordinary sights and sounds of glacial calving. There is nothing quite like hearing the sharp crack of the ice and watching in awe as massive chunks break from the glacier’s face and fall to the water below with a reverberating splash. This will be one of those days where you want to grab a great spot on the deck and settle in for the ride. Keep your eyes peeled for whale tails breaching the water and sea lions lounging lazily on floating icebergs!
mountains, shorelines, and waterways dwarf even the largest ship in its pristine landscape, and you will gain an entirely new perspective when you pull up alongside the Margerie Glacier. You can visualize the path this 21-mile-long river of ice took as it carved its way from deep in the Fairweather Mountain Range to the salty waters of Tarr Inlet. Margerie Glacier is very active, and the chance of seeing some calving from its face is very high. If your room has a private balcony, this is time to enjoy it as the ship will spend at least an hour providing a 360-degree view for those on board.
Travel back in time to your next stop, Skagway. Over one hundred years ago, Skagway was

the gateway to a life of fortune for thousands hoping to strike it rich during the Klondike Gold Rush. Part of the Klondike National Historical Park, Skagway’s seven-block Broadway corridor will transport you back to the gold rush era with its restored buildings, historic false-front shops and restaurants, wooden sidewalks, and locals dressed in colorful costumes. Dive deep into the history of the Klondike Gold Rush at the Skagway Museum, which is devoted to the local and native history of the town, displaying artifacts from the gold rush era and Alaska native baskets, beadwork, and carvings. Hop aboard the White Pass & Yukon Railroad and ride one of the restored vintage train cars to the top of the mountain into Yukon territory.
The railroad follows the Chilkoot Trail, where some 40,000 gold rush hopefuls marched the rugged terrain headed for the Yukon. Today, you can still spot remnants of tools, wheels, and old footpaths that they followed. As you traverse the tracks and bridges along this railroad, some of which are engineering marvels etched into the mountainside, you will pass the historic Gold Rush Cemetery and stunning sights such as Glacier Gorge, Dead Horse Gulch, and the cascading Bridal Veil Falls. While in Skagway, you also can’t miss grabbing a drink at the historic Red Onion Saloon. During the gold rush, this was a famous bordello, but today it is a restaurant and bar with a lively atmosphere.
Another popular gold rush destination you will likely visit is Alaska’s capital, Juneau. Only accessible by plane or boat, this remote capital was founded during the gold rush era when two pioneers discovered three of the largest gold mines in the world. More than $150 million in gold was pulled from its mines, which is nearly $7 billion in today’s value, and by the time the mines dried up, the booming town was so well established that it was declared the state’s capital in 1906. Today Juneau is known not only for its gold and government but for its plethora of wildlife and impressive coastal mountain views. This is an incredible place to head out on a whale-watching expedition. Juneau’s location on several different waterways, including Auke Bay and the Gastineau and Lynn Channels, as well as its many islands, makes this a prime area for humpback whale viewing. You will want to keep your camera ready to capture the iconic “fluke.” In these waters, you can also spot orcas, Dall’s porpoise, harbor seals, and Steller sea lions, as well as many animals roaming the shorelines. Hop on one of the larger tour boats, or opt for a more intimate experience with a private charter for you and your group. The local captains are knowledgeable and passionate about teaching you all there is to know about
NC LIVING WINTER 2023 27
Juneau’s aquatic residents. If you want something a little more active, this is also an excellent place for an offshore fishing charter where you can catch halibut, rockfish, pacific cod, and lingcod. Juneau is also famous for the Mendenhall Glacier, where tours will take you flying high for a bird’s eye view or straight to its surface for a once-in-alifetime experience exploring the vibrant blue ice up close.
At the southernmost entrance to the Inside Passage, you will reach Alaska’s fourth-largest city, Ketchikan, known as the salmon capital of the world. Ketchikan began as a small fishing village, and its name, a Tlingit phrase meaning “eagle with spread-out wings,” is a lasting reminder of its original native inhabitants. Various native groups call the Ketchikan area home, including the Haida, Tlingit, and Tsimshian, whose culture and history are visibly woven into the fabric of the town and land. With the establishment of the fishing and timber industries in the early 1900s, the town quickly grew to its current size. Check out Totem Bight State Park, where you can admire the time-honored craft of totem carving. Meander through massive hemlocks as you explore the tall, intricately carved totem poles of the Tlingit and Haida, a practice and art kept alive for generations, with each telling a story of its own. Catch a glimpse of what life in 19th-century Native
Alaskan culture was like with a visit to the park’s replica Clan House, a structure that would have served as a home to several native families. Immerse yourself deeper with a trip to the Saxman Native Village, where you can experience a Tlingit tribal ceremony and traditional song, dance, and storytelling performances. Back in town, take a walk down the historic Creek Street boardwalk, formerly a bustling gold rush red light district. Shop at locally owned stores and visit the Dolly’s House Museum. Before heading back to your ship, stop for a bloody mary at the Arctic Bar, the oldest local hangout in Ketchikan.
No matter your route, any Inside Passage voyage is bound to be full of intriguing history, vibrant culture, breathtaking scenery, and fascinating wildlife. The hardest part of this trip is packing up your bags to head back home, though you will likely start planning your next visit before your plane takes off. With any travel through this incredible state, whether by sea or air, always remember to be respectful of her land, her culture, and her wildlife so that she may forever remain the last great frontier.

WITH THE PRESENT
Mindfulness is one of the core principles of Miraval - being present in the moment and letting go of worries and ruminations from the past. As natural thinkers, people may find this challenging. We have all felt the frustration of trying to be present in the moment. Whether it’s a family dinner or a business meeting, life’s difficulties can be a common distraction. One moment you are enjoying a meal with friends, and the next, you are propelled into an anxious spiral over a notification that just popped up on your phone.
For your stay at Miraval, you will enjoy “Miraval Mode,” an environment free of digital devices, such as cell phones, laptops, and tablets. Take this opportunity to regain consciousness of your physical, spiritual, and mental presence and step away from the distractions and into digital mindfulness. To prepare for “Miraval Mode,” the resort provides a few tips before your arrival.
MIRAVAL’S MINDFUL TIPS TO HELP YOU UNPLUG
• Turn on your “out of office” message for personal and work emails.
• Put your phone on “Airplane Mode” to prevent notifications, incoming calls, or alerts from disrupting you and other guests. We suggest turning off all notifications permanently from your cell phone apps to establish better control of your devices.
• Go analog – for the moments when you are waiting for a friend, sitting at a cafe, or taking a break, consider analog options rather than scrolling through a digital device. Start carrying your favorite book, a journal, the latest bestseller, a collection of poems, or a bundle of magazines.
• Wear an analog watch and buy a travel alarm clock. When you use your phone as a watch or alarm clock, you are more likely to get distracted by what your screen offers versus simply telling the time.
• Change your screen backdrops to display mindful reminders. Remember that you control your intentions, don’t let your phone control them.
To learn more about digital mindfulness, visit MiravalArizona.com to hear from science journalist, speaker, and author Catherine Price. Price has dedicated her life to helping people unplug; she is the founder of Screen/Life Balance, author of How to Break Up With Your Phone and The Power of Fun , and Miraval’s own Digital Wellness Ambassador.

NC LIVING WINTER 2023 41
One of the best things about traveling to faraway places is the perspective you gain from immersing yourself in other cultures and ways of life. In the United States, we often think we have everything figured out, but do we? In a culture driven by work and performance, it can be hard to balance our everyday lives and find time to de-stress or connect with our loved ones. This vicious cycle leaves us prone to burnout, mental fatigue, and an overall decline in general health that doesn’t bode very well for a productive life.
This year, we are looking to our neighbors across the globe to uncover their habits and traditions for maintaining a healthy and meaningful life. Easy enough to incorporate into your daily schedule, these intuitive practices could help you get on your way to happier living.
HYGGE (DENMARK)
Winter is the perfect time for sitting by the fire enjoying the company of family and friends, and the Danes are well known for their love of all things comforting. So much so that their concept of hygge (pronounced hoo-gah) has come to be a signature of Danish culture. Hygge, when boiled down, roughly translates to “coziness,” but really, hygge is a concept that embodies so much more.
It is the warm glow of candlelight, conversations with loved ones, snuggling up with a blanket, or enjoying a warm cup of coffee with friends. Winter is the time for hygge because, in Denmark, the season tends to be long, dark, and cold, leaving the Danes craving that warm and cozy feeling to escape from the chill.
Practicing hygge is something many of us do in our everyday lives without even realizing it, but creating these experiences for ourselves with intention can lead us to a happier existence. This winter, tap into the Danish practice of hygge and make some hot chocolate, cozy up by the fire, and engage in deep conversations with your loved ones; we promise it’s good for the heart and soul.
SHINRIN-YOKU (JAPAN)
The Japanese are well known for their health practices, and because of this, they enjoy a higher level of longevity than many other cultures. One practice from Japan that you can easily incorporate into your life is Shinrin-yoku (“forest bathing”) which is the simple and therapeutic act of spending time in the forest or outside in nature. This doesn’t require any exercise or physical exertion but rather a mental willingness to detach from the outside world, immerse yourself in the
natural environment and open your senses to the sights, smells, and sounds around you. Shrinrinyoku is such common practice in Japan that the Japanese Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries officially coined the term in 1982.
Even if you live in a concrete jungle, it is important to get outside; take a quick walk around your local park or just relax on the balcony and feel the breeze on your skin. Here on the Plateau, forest and woodland are abundant, so take a few minutes out of your day to sit outside and bathe in the world around you.
LA PASSEGGIATA (ITALY)
As the sun begins to set in Italy, the streets come alive between 5-8 pm with hundreds of Italians engaging in their evening la passeggiata, a gentle and slow stroll, typically through the town’s main streets. This popular tradition brings together family, friends, coworkers, and neighbors to gather in the central plaza, enjoy each other’s company and catch up on life at the end of the day.
La passeggiata is an excellent practice to incorporate, if not every day, at least a few times a week into your daily schedule. After dinner with your family, gather everyone for a leisurely walk rather than all retreating to different rooms, even if it’s just down the street outside your home! Not only will this help you digest your dinner, but it will have you feeling relaxed and content for the rest of your evening.
FIKA (SWEDEN)
Fika is a practice deeply ingrained in Swedish culture and daily life. While it is often translated as a “coffee and cake break,” it is much more of a ritual for social interaction among Swedes rather than a simple break for a snack. Fika is a time to get together and socialize with family, friends, and colleagues during the day. It is time to rest the brain, strengthen relationships, and recharge during work. Many businesses have also found that institutionalizing Fika leads to happier and more productive teams.
This doesn’t require an hour out of every day, but even thirty minutes spent enjoying coffee and a pastry with a friend or close colleague could be all the improvement you need. Give yourself a break, strengthen your relationships, sip on some coffee, and you might find yourself with a more positive daily outlook.

A keen eye for beauty and a creative spirit drive Silver Creek Real Estate Group broker Debby Hall.
With over 30 years of experience working as a successful interior designer and entrepreneur In Highlands and Atlanta, Debby has perfected the art of finding and crafting homes that reflect her clients’ personalities and lifestyles.
Fueled by a lifelong passion for aesthetics, balance, and architecture, Debby pursued her bachelor’s degree in interior design from the University of Tennessee. “Even in junior high school, I knew I wanted to be a designer,” she says. “One of our ‘rites of passage’ before moving on to high school was to write a career notebook, and even then, I wrote about my dreams of being an interior designer.”
Upon graduating with her degree, she began her career working with builders and real estate agents on speculative and custom homes, bringing projects to life from construction to final finishes and furnishings. Over the years, Debby continued to grow and develop her design business in the Atlanta area, eventually showcasing her work for three consecutive years
at both the Atlanta Symphony Showhouse and Christmas at Callanwolde events.
The ability to conceptualize and render her vision for a space is a skill she has been fostering since childhood. Growing up in a family that moved frequently, Debby recalls her parents often making design changes to their homes, swapping out furniture and décor throughout the years. This inspired her from a young age to do the same.
“When I was about 10 or 11, we lived in Kansas City, and my room at the time had all of this white, wooden, provincial style furniture, including a heavy canopy style bed,” Debby recalled. “One morning my Mom walked into the room, and I had rearranged the whole thing overnight. She was pretty shocked that I had managed to move all of the furniture myself, but I was determined.”
This would prove useful In her future career. With decades of experience listening to her client’s unique wants, needs, and visions, Debby’s intuitive nature allowed her to seamlessly shift her interpersonal and design skills to the real estate profession.

As a part-time resident of Highlands for over 15 years, Debby’s admiration for the natural beauty of the area is rooted in her memories of time spent with family in northern Minnesota, a place that, for her, bears a close resemblance to the Plateau that she now calls home. When the time came to relocate from Atlanta to Highlands permanently, it was a welcome change, “I think a lot of people that come to the Plateau, including myself, are drawn here because of a genuine love for nature and the outdoors,” she remarked.
As a full-time resident of Highlands, Debby has found immense fulfillment in harnessing her eye for space planning and design to help her clients position their homes for sale and inspire buyers to see potential in spaces they otherwise would not. Her ability to visualize simple changes, whether it be the wall color or layout, can mean all the difference in converting a house into a dream home. From working with developers to construct a project from the ground up to working with builders, trades, and suppliers to craft her client’s visions, she is an expert at managing each process to achieve the desired result.
When Debby is not helping her clients find or create the homes of their dreams, she can be found hanging out with friends at her favorite spots in town, like Oakleaf Flower & Garden, spending time with her son and family, or walking the trails around town with her best four-legged friend, Gracie. An avid fan of cooking and gardening, she also loves whipping up new creations in her kitchen and connecting with other ‘green thumbs’ in the Highlands Mountain Garden Club.

With Silver Creek’s ethics aligning firmly with my own, it felt like a natural fit.”
WHAT QUALITIES DIFFERENTIATE YOU FROM OTHER AGENTS IN OUR MARKET?
“A fresh perspective and a sharp eye. Being an agent with a background in design has allowed me to look at things from a different angle. Whether positioning a home for sale or scoping out a new property, I utilize my skills to help my clients determine and make the changes necessary for a successful outcome.”
IS THERE A NON-PROFIT IN THE AREA THAT YOU ARE PASSIONATE ABOUT?
“Absolutely. The Humane Society. My Gracie is a rescue dog, so it is a cause very close to my heart.”
WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE DESIGN TRENDS OF THE MOMENT?
“I wouldn’t necessarily call them trends, but I’m thrilled that the cool, steel grays are moving out and warm browns are coming back. Wood furniture and antiques are becoming more popular, as is wallpaper. We moved away from using wallpaper for many years, but it has become so much more sophisticated, and some of the paper that you find now really looks like it has been hand-painted by an artist. I think it’s a great way to bring warmth and texture into a space.”
TELL US ABOUT YOUR FAVORITE RESTAURANT ON THE PLATEAU.
“I love going to Wild Thyme because the service and food are consistently great. Another favorite is Wolfgang’s Restaurant & Wine Bistro; their braised short ribs are absolutely delicious.”
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE SEASON ON THE PLATEAU?
“I would have to say summer because it feels like an extended spring; everything is beautiful, green, and blooming all season long. I also really love the seasonal transition on the Plateau from summer to winter.”
OUTSIDE OF THE PLATEAU, WHERE IS YOUR FAVORITE PLACE TO TRAVEL?
“The coast of Maine - it is breathtakingly beautiful. I would love to rent an RV someday and travel the whole coast. There’s also nothing quite like fresh Maine lobster!”
WHAT IS THE MOST VALUABLE THING YOU’VE LEARNED WHILE WORKING AS A BROKER?
“I’ve learned how translatable my skills are as a designer. Working in real estate, I have been able to tap into my knowledge in architecture, space planning, and design to provide a more thorough experience for my clients when it comes to buying and selling a home.”
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE A NEW REAL ESTATE AGENT?
“Take advantage of the fact that you have a fresh outlook on the industry and the area that you are working in. Although you may not have years of experience, you are a new face, with new ideas and insight that can prove invaluable when working with your clients.”

Airing the Linen
THREAD COUNT, SOFTNESS, AND OTHER MYTHS. HERE IS THE LOWDOWN ON BEDSHEETS

words by mickey alam khan
50 SILVER CREEK REAL ESTATE GROUP
“I’m so good at sleeping, I can do it with my eyes closed.” That anonymous wit must have had good bedsheets. But seriously, sleep is underrated, and bed linens even more.
It is interesting how much attention is paid to clothes, watches, jewelry, cars, art, food and wine. But bedsheet sets and covers — leave that to the housekeeper, interior designer or a hurried trip to the linens store.
What a shame.
BALANCE SHEET
When I was younger, I made some decisions for the rest of my life: invest in tailored suits, comfortable shoes and quality bed linen.
What do they say about beds and shoes? If you are not in one, you are in the other.
Education is key when picking a bed linens brand for yourself or your household. Your choice determines how much you value your night’s repose to repair for another day’s battle.
NC LIVING WINTER 2023 51
Start with the heritage and the brand’s commitment to quality and craftsmanship. Among those that stand out are names such as Pratesi, Frette, Matouk, Yves Delorme, E. Braun & Co., D. Porthault, Peter Reed and the newest entrant to this field, Verderoccia Firenze.
I can personally attest to Pratesi and Frette, having slept on those sheets, pillowcases and shams, and been tucked under the duvet covers for decades now. The fabrics soften over time. And the sleep is deeper. OK, not always — but there are other reasons for that.
The point I am making, though, is that the sheets hold up, even after the rough and tumble of a young lad at home, plenty of guests and — admittedly — not enough respect in the dryer. No, I cannot find a clothesline to hang my linens in New York.
When considering sheets, most people focus on one metric: thread count. Anything upwards of a 300to 500-thread count means that you are buying into the marketing.
Thread count is the total number of threads or strands per square inch of fabric. Many folks assume that the higher the thread count, the softer and sturdier the fabric. But more important than that are the quality of fiber and weave.
“The trick is in maintaining a balance in softness and lightness,” says Gaia Leonori Pratesi, Florence, Italybased founder of Verderoccia.
Relying on her family’s four-generation Tuscan legacy, Verderoccia specializes in jacquard and percale fabrics with the appropriate thread count comprising the longest-staple Egyptian cotton woven in Italy by expert artisans.
ALL LINES UP
If you ask me, I prefer percale to sateen, which has a smoother surface and thicker feel more suited to colder months. I like the crisp, matte tone of percale, and besides, it is cooler to the touch.
For me, percale is a year-round fabric — something that I learned with suits: choose an all-year wool weight so you are not sweating indoors where, more often than not, the temperature is controlled. For the colder months, don an overcoat when outdoors.
Design is another consideration. Staples such as the hotel collection — two lines, three lines, and now even four — are good standbys, as are the Greek chain-link patterns and florals.
52 SILVER CREEK REAL ESTATE GROUP

MANY FOLKS ASSUME THAT THE HIGHER THE THREAD COUNT, THE SOFTER AND STURDIER THE FABRIC. BUT MORE IMPORTANT THAN THAT ARE THE QUALITY OF FIBER AND WEAVE.

NC LIVING WINTER 2023 53
My mum — a child of the Sixties — is heavily into florals and colorful productions. Not surprisingly, my two sisters and I have linen closets heaving with the most vibrant patterns that can knock Marimekko, Pucci and Missoni off their perch.
Those sheets get their day in the sun in the spring and summer.
Mostly, I turn to crisp whites, some solid, others with the two or three lines in white, black or khaki. The sheets have to be tucked in tight, top and fitted bottom, and pillows and shams propped up. The duvet cover has to stretch and align just right. That is something I learned from my dad — make your bed first thing in the morning and the day is off to a good start. One chore down.
The best bed linens are arguably woven in Italy, France and the United Kingdom. What they have in common is the highest-grade Egyptian cotton.
Another myth to debunk is softness. No, softness does not equate quality.
“Nowadays, we have to be careful and can’t always trust the feel of bed linens,” Ms. Pratesi points out. “Chemicals such as fabric softeners are often added to the products and after a few washes the softening effect vanishes, revealing the scarcity of the original fabric.
“Then let us search for the treasured details, such as finishings, millimeter and perfection,” she says. “In other words, equilibrium inside and out.”

With a bold entrepreneurial spirit and a firm belief that real estate is in his blood, Jochen Lucke has spent over two decades building his reputation as a skilled Realtor, broker, contractor, and developer — first in Southeast Florida and now on the Highlands-Cashiers Plateau.
His love of the mountains, paired with his love of family and community, brought Jochen to Western North Carolina. The decision to leave the sweltering heat and stressful environment of Fort Lauderdale for the cool, clean air and laid-back atmosphere of Cashiers was an easy one. Since making the move, he has become deeply involved in the community. He is also a member of the Entrepreneurs’ Organization (EO). Jochen and his wife, Adrienne, are members of The Country Club of Sapphire Valley and The Chattooga Club. He is partnered with Haute Residence, an invitation-only luxury real estate portal. When he’s not hard at work at the Silver Creek Real Estate Group offices, Jochen can be found on the golf course or croquet lawn or dining in one of the area’s fine restaurants.
Jochen is devoted to the Silver Creek credo of “Building Relationships, Delivering Dreams.” Whether you are looking for your vacation home, your primary residence, or your dream estate, Jochen and his team of brokers are committed to finding the ideal property to fit your vision. Jochen has a firm grasp of the local real estate market while always keeping an eye on national trends. He has an innate understanding of the practice of purchasing and selling properties, both as a broker and a developer. He attributes much of his success to his tenacity and has negotiated
and closed many deals from which others might have walked away. Jochen truly enjoys real estate and development and finds great rewards in the accomplishment of finding the perfect home for his clients.
“Jochen is in a league all of his own! We have dealt with quite a few Brokers over the years — buying and selling. Some brokers become friends; some friends become brokers. But Jochen stands out in his amazing skills, talent, connections, and sheer power of personality. Attentive, discreet, highly sophisticated, incredibly intuitive, calm, cool, and collected. Jochen inspires confidence and delivers quick results. He doesn’t sweat the small stuff and makes sure you don’t either. He immediately inspires trust and confidence and then goes above your highest expectations. Peerless! Selling a home is never easy — especially in unexpected circumstances. Jochen not only sold our house within a week, he made the entire process — from listing to closing — totally smooth, easy, and, most importantly, stress-free. We couldn’t be more appreciative, grateful, and satisfied. End to end, it was a superb, painless experience. Jochen even helped and guided us in the purchase of our new home in another state, stepping in and filling in the gaps the local agents left. Truly above and beyond the call of duty!
Thank you, Jochen! You absolutely rock! YOU ARE THE KING OF ROCK! Thank you, Izaak, for the awesome photos and Delaney for the great write up. Most of all, thank you Jochen for your professionalism, friendship, and genuine care. We’ll recommend you wholeheartedly to anyone looking for a property in the glorious North Carolina Mountains.”

Hailing from Northwest Georgia, Parker is a third-generation Realtor who is passionate about creating bonds with his clients. He spent six years focusing on and helping to grow the booming residential market in New Orleans before relocating to Cashiers. Parker is extremely steadfast in assisting and representing both buyers and sellers with any of their real estate needs throughout the HighlandsCashiers Plateau.
As a Realtor in the North Carolina mountains, Parker is able to combine his passion for real estate with his love of the outdoors, fine dining, and community involvement. He is no stranger to the mountains, as he was a frequent visitor to Southern Appalachia throughout his childhood and lived in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, for a period of his adult life. Parker’s wife, Caroline, was both a camper and counselor at Camp Merrie-Woode in Sapphire for 13 summers. This, along with a family home for 10 years in Cashiers, is what led them to the Plateau for many extended trips and holidays. They married at High Hampton in May 2017 and decided to leave the Crescent City to make Cashiers their permanent home in 2019.
“I connected with Parker some months ago rather randomly through a request for information on your website. He called me immediately, and he began sending me information on properties in the Cashiers/ Highlands area. Our parameters changed several times over the course of these months, and Parker amiably revised his searches and kept the information coming, even though I have to admit our interest was really just curiosity in the beginning. But lo and behold a particular property piqued our serious attention a couple of weeks ago, and with Parker’s professional help we are now proud owners of a home in Cashiers.
Parker has been extremely helpful, knowledgeable, and available, and I don’t know that we would have signed a purchase agreement on a home in North Carolina, sight unseen, without the trust and confidence we developed in Parker over the course of the last few months. The long-distance closing was seamless and worry-free. We look forward to spending a lot of time in the beautiful Cashiers area!”

Parker and Caroline welcomed their first child in February 2021 and are looking forward to raising their family in the mountains.
Parker is committed to community involvement, from attending Church of the Good Shepherd to serving on his HOA board to volunteering at the Village Green and serving on the board of the Cashiers Historical Society. Outside of the office, you can also find him hiking the many mountains in our area, reading a book, or spending time enjoying this lovely place called home with Caroline, his son Michael “Reeves,” and their golden retrievers, Jane and Winnie.

“We had been searching for a summer home in the Cashiers/Highlands area for three years. During our search, we found only one home that met most of our needs and requirements. Unfortunately, the negotiations on that home proved to be unsuccessful. That was a huge disappointment for us. We considered giving up our search in Cashiers and Highlands and focusing elsewhere in N.C. or possibly in the New England area, but fortuitously, we met Bambi. We renewed our search but saw nothing else that appealed to us. Then, Bambi suggested that perhaps she could develop a plan of action to acquire for us the home that we’d failed to purchase previously. We thought it would be a futile effort, but we agreed to let her try.
Bambi was relentless. She led us through difficult negotiations with flawless strategy, tactics, and execution. To say that she worked “day and night” (emailing as early as 6 a.m. or as late as 11 p.m.), on weekdays and weekends is no exaggeration. When presented with issues that seemed insurmountable, she came up with options and solutions.
In short, we would not have been successful in purchasing our home without Bambi’s persistence, determination, wisdom, and good judgment. She is simply amazing!”

This spring we contacted Jodi Moore after seeing her name on several listings in the area. We had several conversations about what we were looking for, then scheduled a day together. Jodi had done an extensive search and set up several home tours. She took us to different communities and we found her to be very informative about the area. We are from out of state and found her knowledge and experience invaluable. We spent three days with Jodi and we found a beautiful home in the Sapphire/Burlingame community. Jodi provided us with details of the community and arranged a tour of the country club. We worked together to put an offer together and after some back and forth, our offer was accepted. Jodi made all the arrangements for all the home inspections and referred us to other tradesmen and other professionals in the area to help us complete the transaction.
We recently closed on our mountain home and are very excited to move in!!!
It has been many years since we purchased a home. The most important aspects that Jodi delivered on include: regular communication, responsiveness, knowledge of the area, and a strong network of colleagues.

THREE PHILANTHROPIC GROUPS THAT ARE LEAVING THEIR MARK ON THE WORLD

NC LIVING WINTER 2023 97
Some people equate supercars, lavish five-star stays and the finest quality apparel to the good life. But maybe the good life is one that does not involve material possessions at all.
It is easy to get distracted by the glitz and glam of the luxury world, but behind this silk curtain is a world riddled with poverty, war and illness, and there are millions of people and numerous organizations who work every day to bring these issues to light and find solutions for them.
From protecting wildlife to safeguarding the rights of children around the world to supporting the arts, the World Wildlife Federation, UNICEF and the Chihuly Foundation have set out to bring good into the world.
WORLD WILDLIFE FEDERATION (WWF)
People are becoming increasingly aware of their impact on the environment, and the World Wildlife Federation has been at the forefront of this issue since 1961, working to sustain the natural world for the benefit of mankind and wildlife.
The organization’s mission is to build a future in which people may live in harmony with nature through six key areas: climate, food, forests, freshwater, oceans and wildlife.
WWF is focused heavily on increasing the world’s tiger population, working with world leaders to raise money to support community-based conservation programs.
According to the federation, tigers play a critical role in maintaining a thriving ecosystem, so each time a tiger is saved, 25,000 acres of forest are as well.

The organization has also been integral in efforts to close Asia’s illegal ivory markets — an industry that kills roughly 20,000 elephants each year for their tusks. worldwildlife.org

UNITED NATIONS CHILDREN’S FUND (UNICEF)
Creating a better tomorrow means protecting the leaders of tomorrow: children. Founded after World War II, UNICEF is committed to safeguarding the rights of all children, everywhere.
In partnership with world leaders and other organizations, UNICEF works to promote policies and expand access to services that protect children, reduce child mortality rates, provide quality education, alleviate poverty and provide emergency assistance to youngsters in areas affected by war and natural disasters.
In early 2020, UNICEF saw more children living to see their first birthday, as child mortality had fallen 50 percent since 2000. Maternal mortality and child marriages were on the decline and more girls were going to, and staying in, school. However, the COVID-19 pandemic has become the greatest threat to children in UNICEF’s 75-year history.
While the number of children who are hungry, out of school, abused, living in poverty or forced into marriage is increasing, those with access to healthcare, vaccines, sufficient food and essential services is decreasing, according to the organization. unicef.org
DALE AND LESLIE CHIHULY FOUNDATION
Guided by the principle that art plays a critical role in inspiring people around the world, glass artist Dale Chihuly and his wife, Leslie, both leaders in the art world, founded their philanthropic project.
The Dale and Leslie Chihuly Foundation was formed in 2009 with a mission to inspire and educate the public regarding all forms of art and to provide support to artists and arts organizations through grants.
Since 2010, it has made multi-year funding commitments to programs and organizations that support artists, enable youth arts education and enhance the quality of life for underserved communities, including the elderly, veterans and the disabled, through art-making experiences.
So far there are eight Chihuly grant recipients: Artist Trust, Hilltop Artists, Path with Art, Classical KING FM, Hot Shop Heroes, The Pratt Fine Arts Center, University of Washington’s
School of Art and Design and the Aspen Institute. chihulyfoundation.org

NC LIVING WINTER 2023 121
ON THE MARKET WITH JOCHEN LUCKE
words by delaney asbury
In anticipation of a new year for real estate on the Highlands-Cashiers Plateau, NC Living Magazine has asked Silver Creek Real Estate Group President and Owner Jochen Lucke to share his insight on the market for 2023. Over the last 15 years, Jochen has grown Silver Creek to include three offices, an in-house marketing department, and a team of highly skilled real estate professionals who have completed more than $1 billion in local sales across Cashiers, Highlands, Lake Glenville, Lake Toxaway, and other areas of the Plateau. Jochen’s firm grasp of local and national trends has been cultivated by decades of experience in real estate, not only here in Western North Carolina but also as a successful agent, contractor, and developer in Southeast Florida for many years.
Finding his passion for real estate early on, Jochen’s tenacity and inherent ability to navigate the intricacies of the buying and selling process have contributed to decades of success in securing the perfect properties for his clients.
Here are his thoughts on the future of the Plateau real estate market.
From 2021 to 2022, the Plateau continued to see an increase in both the average home listing price and the average home sales price. Do you think this trend will continue, or are we due for a significant market decline?
Many of our clients have asked if 2023 will be the year that we see a substantial drop in housing prices on the Plateau, similar to the Great Recession period of 2005-2008. While I believe the yearly home-price growth will continue to slow, I see three significant differences between today’s market conditions and those of the Great Recession.
122 SILVER CREEK REAL ESTATE GROUP
First, prior to the recession many investors lacked experience in the industry and tried to make a quick dollar by flipping contracts or properties while basing their proformas on unrealistic expectations, such as factoring in “anticipated appreciation.” At that time, an abundance of homes were built with a limited number of buyers in the market. The second major difference was the supply of money in the system by lenders to unqualified borrowers causing the eventual burst in mortgage defaults and high losses for lenders. Over the last several years, we have seen the majority of our transactions closing with cash without any leverage. The final difference is that during the Great Recession purchases were largely driven by investors with not enough end-users. Buyers came to the Plateau, and still do, because they fell in love with the area and purchased their homes with plans to create memories with their family and friends.
As the real estate market begins to find its balance, how do you think the number of transactions locally and globally will be impacted?
We will see the numbers of pending and closed sales decline nationally as well as on the Plateau in 2023. The record number of transactions in the real estate space was not sustainable as we entered the post-pandemic market. This is also why we will see various news outlets sensationalizing double-digit percentage declines for pending home sales, mortgage applications, etc., for the national real estate market. Real estate has been and will always be local. While national trends and economic conditions influence our market, the advice and market insight of a local real estate broker will again play a more important role moving forward.
With the market reaching this equilibrium and buyers becoming more hesitant due to economic fluctuations, what will make the difference for the successful listing and selling of properties?
As we enter the second year of our market trending towards more balanced conditions, we will see the importance of marketing as it
relates to properties once again being at the forefront of those looking to sell. Over the last several years, properties have sold quickly and, in many cases, with multiple offers coming in at once. These circumstances led to some brokers and firms not investing in the proper marketing of properties due to high expectations of rapid turnover. A comprehensive strategy for marketing properties is once again being demanded by sellers, as it should be to market these significant assets. Silver Creek’s hyper-local focus continues to deliver results for our clients. Our marketing team focuses solely on Plateau offerings which is a distinct advantage as our time and energy are dedicated locally, not spread across other parts of the state or country. Buyers appreciate and utilize our team as their single resource for real estate on the Plateau.
Over the past few years, we have seen a record number of agents entering the industry. What do you think this means for those who were trying to ride the wave of the market boom?
I believe that we will see more agents exiting our industry in 2023. Nationally, some experts are predicting as many as 250,000 agents will seek other opportunities. Those that entered the market over the last couple of years will be challenged as the number of transactions on the Plateau continue to decrease. Silver Creek continues to innovate and invest in the success of our brokers. Furthermore, she understands the emotional and physical intricacies involved in the processing and healing of recurrent pain and injury.
Discover a deeper level of care as you work with Dr. Aery to formulate a treatment plan tuned to you and your needs. Together you will dive into your concerns, medical history, bloodwork, and unique lifestyle so that she may develop a comprehensive yet attainable course of action to address your goals for targeted pain reduction or general lifestyle adjustments. Utilizing a variety of methods including nutritional therapies, massage, and exercise, she can tap into your body’s natural healing abilities to get you back on the road to enjoying the things you love.
As the practice’s name suggests, one of the primary services Dr. Aery offers is medical acupuncture. This traditional Chinese alternative therapy has been around for thousands of years and has long been valued for its pain-reducing potential. The deliberate placement of acupuncture needles into the skin at specific points is believed to stimulate the central nervous system, which in turn releases chemicals into the muscles, spinal cord, and brain. These biochemical changes then stimulate the tissue’s natural healing abilities and promote overall physical and emotional well-being. According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH) medical acupuncture can be an effective treatment for discomfort associated with postoperative and chemotherapy-induced nausea, dental pain, headaches, lower back pain, and neck pain, just to name a few.
Another treatment Dr. Aery employs in her practice is Stem Wave Therapy, also known as Tissue Regeneration Therapy (TRT). This treatment method has been used for over 40 years as a non-surgical alternative to traditional pain management in the joints and other areas of the body. TRT uses patented, FDA 510(k) cleared unfocused acoustic waves, known as SoftWaves®, to produce positive and negative forces on targeted cells, effectively stimulating them and promoting natural healing within the tissue. Quick and easy, TRT requires no numbing and has no side effects, so you can get back on the move after your treatment. This unique therapy has been shown to reduce pain in knees, joints, and herniated disks, as well as pain associated with plantar fasciitis, tendonitis, shin splints, stress fractures, and more.
It’s time to shed that pain and tension you have been carrying around and get back to living an active life that you enjoy.
Dr. Sue Aery and her team at Aery Chiropractic & Acupuncture are incredibly passionate about helping their patients achieve healthy, pain-free lives and stand ready to answer any questions or concerns you may have. Off the Wall
words by lisa klein
The walls of a room sometimes fade into the background — a place for passive paint hues, a neutral zone to go unnoticed. Coating them in wallpaper, however, brings the whole room to life.
Design experts know not to miss out on the opportunity to have style bursting from every meticulously matched seam and personality leaping from the walls with every repeat.
“Wallcoverings add that extra dimension to a room, enhancing a room’s architecture, contributing wonderful color, pattern and texture,” says Suzanne Tucker, designer and principal at San Francisco-based Tucker & Marks and author of the upcoming Extraordinary Interiors . “It’s all
about the full circle of design and providing the perfect finishing touch.”
Wallpaper has seen countless iterations, from chinoiserie, 18th-century French scenic panels and hand-blocked English garden motifs to Victorian damasks and nature-inspired art nouveau at the turn of the 20th century, the dainty florals of the 1940s and ’50s to the groovy and sometimes garish graphics of the ‘60s and ‘70s.
There has been nary a decade in which wallcoverings have been out of style, save for the wave of minimalism starting in the 1990s. In the 21st century, there is a pattern to match just about any taste.

“IT’S ALL ABOUT BALANCING THE VARIOUS ELEMENTS OF A ROOM — ARCHITECTURE, FURNISHINGS, PATTERNS — OFF OF EACH OTHER AND ACHIEVING A HARMONY THAT MAKES THE ROOM SING.”

“I use wallpaper in almost every project,” says Stewart Manger of the eponymous New York design firm, whose first book, Romancing the Home: Stylish Interiors for Modern Living , will be available soon.
“Even if you are a minimalist, you could use a textured wallpaper,” he says. “As a maximalist, you might choose a scenic wallpaper. There are so many options.”
ICONS AND HEROES
With so many choices in play, it is important to put some thought into what makes it onto the wall, especially the emotional response of whomever will be living with it. The wrong design can certainly put a damper on the mood.
Irish poet and playwright Oscar Wilde’s reputed last words in 1900 in the floral-patterned room where he spent three years at the Hôtel d’Alsace — now l’Hôtel — in Paris were, “My wallpaper and I are fighting a duel to the death. One or the other of us has got to go.”
That infamous wallpaper lived on in room 16 for 100 more years before it was finally refurbished in classic stripes and peacock frescos, proving that — love it or hate it — walls may be stuck with a paper choice for quite some time.
“A patterned wallcovering will affect all the other textile choices in the room, so make sure you the people you share the space with love the look,” says Sumitra Mattai, vice president of design for U.S. heritage interiors brand Scalamandré. “I think putting up wallpaper is like getting a tattoo — it’s not as permanent, but it’s a commitment.”
Likewise, steer clear of anything too trendy to ensure a chosen motif is not out of style by the time the paste dries. A classic pattern will stand the test of time and, in the world of wallpaper, does not mean boring.
For Scalamandré, founded in 1929, that means bold graphics over richly hued backgrounds, gender-neutral geometrics and lush textures that harken back to its beginnings as a fabric manufacturer.
The brand’s most iconic wallcovering, Zebras, was introduced after the company recreated a friend’s one-off design for Gino of Capri restaurant in New York in the 1970s after it was destroyed in a fire, the original iteration with a bright red background.
“I’ve thought a lot about what makes Zebras continue to feel relevant,” Ms. Mattai muses. “I think part of the beauty of the pattern is the pop art sensibility of a black-and-white motif on a saturated background.”
“There is something arresting about that visual formula,” she says. “I also think that the treatment of the motifs is sophisticated, not childish or cutesy, even though they are animal motifs.”
Baldwin Bamboo is another Scalamandré winner, its large-scale chinoiserie lattice pattern neither feminine nor masculine with both geometric aspects and fine detailing.
Newer patterns that are already on their way to becoming company classics include Leaping Cheetah, which Ms. Mattai created as a “friend” of Zebras with a similar feel, and the embroidered and hand-beaded Catwalk Embellished

Grasscloth, which lends a 3D element to flat walls.
In his designs, Mr. Manger finds himself reaching for timeless, historic wallpapers from Bird & Thistle or Brunschwig & Fils and more modern handblocked papers from companies such as The Alpha Workshops.
“I love hand-blocked papers, in general, because you can see the craftsmanship in them,” he says.
Ms. Tucker often hangs “dreamy, hand painted” murals by the likes of de Gournay and Gracie, classic English patterns by Cowtan & Tout or Farrow & Ball and versatile grasscloth papers that she calls “decorating heroes.”
IN THE MIX
No matter the pattern the designers choose for a project, they have some general rules to hang by.
“I start with the architecture,” Mr. Manger says. “I then design the room, and from there, I select the wallpaper. For example, in a bedroom, you might apply panels [first] and then the wallpaper can beset into those panels. In a long hallway, you want the wallpaper to run from the baseboard to the crown molding.”
When it comes to pattern choices, Ms. Tucker weighs her clients’ aesthetic preferences and the fit with the rest of the home.
“Formal or casual, bold or subdued, color lovers or color timid, how one space is relating to its adjacent companion — all those elements must be taken into consideration,” she says. “Though there have been a few occasions where I have fallen in love with a pattern and patiently waited for the right project to deploy it.”
Of course, wallpaper will not be the only thing in a room — designing any space is a delicate balancing act, especially when covering entire walls with a big statement.
“When designing a room, scale and proportion are key,” Ms. Tucker says. “It’s all about balancing the various elements of a room — architecture, furnishings, patterns — off of each other and achieving a harmony that makes the room sing.”
As a design feature, more subdued wallpaper can be used to add that extra needed layer to a room, creating dimension and a backdrop “beyond painted or plastered walls,” Ms. Tucker says.
“I love using textured papers,” she says. “Grasscloth or slubbed silk are the perfect choice to elegantly envelop a room, catch the light, soften a space, complement art and improve acoustics.”
A daring pattern calls for a different approach to tie it all together.
“GENERALLY, IF A WALLPAPER IS BOLD, IT IS BETTER TO BE MORE RESTRAINED WITH THE REST OF THE PIECES IN THE ROOM...”

“Generally, if a wallpaper is bold, it is better to be more restrained with the rest of the pieces in the room,” Mr. Manger advises. “If a dining room features a dramatic scenic pattern, other elements in the room should not be as heavily colored. They should be subtle and complement the wallpaper. The chairs might have a pretty shape, but a more muted color.”
Regardless of the part wallpaper plays in a room, a color palette, style or thematic approach is needed to make it cohesive.
Patterns used should be different in size and scale, and the mix of patterns and textures should complement each other rather than chaotically duke it out.
“Pin up all the [pattern] options and stand back — some will come forward, others will recede,” Ms. Tucker says. “Take out the ones that are fighting and screaming at each other.”
The room itself, too, matters when it comes to paper pattern. Powder rooms lend themselves to making a big splash, since they are small and less frequently used.
Another place for drama is the dining room, and murals are a great way to create it. Ms. Tucker loves putting gold-leaf tea paper on the ceilings of both for a “magical glow.”
Mr. Manger often finds himself wallpapering staircases with vertical patterns to emphasize their height and incorporating stripes into hallways to give the space some rhythm.
ON THE WALLS of a bedroom or long hall, drawing room, tucked-away mudroom or grand entrance, wallpaper can make for truly special design.
The perfect paper showcases everything from an antique rug to a fabulous art collection and, most importantly, personality.
“Wallcovering — whether its patterned, textured or both — activates a space and makes it truly unique,” Ms. Mattai says. “A fresh coat of paint is great, but wallcovering is more expressive of personal style. It tells a story in a way that flat color cannot.”
