Yes, there’ll be bucket list ticks aplenty, but, as you glide from one glorious Four Seasons Hotel to another, each destination will dazzle with moneycan’t-buy access — be it after-hours private viewings of Michelangelo’s David, or touring backstage Sydney Opera House areas closed to the public.

WORLD OF ADVENTURES

Spanning 24 days across September and October 2023 (or April and May 2024), the magnificent World of Adventures journey trailblazes through four continents. Departing from Seattle, you’ll land in Kyoto, Japan, and become a samurai for a day as you learn to draw, pose, and swing your katana, under the tutelage of Tetsuro Shimaguchi, Kill Bill’s head choreographer.

Next stop: Bali. In this green and serene land, you’ll raft on Ayung River rapids, have a sacred water purification ritual at Tirta Empul, and cycle Bali’s lush countryside. From one tropical paradise to another as you fly to the Seychelles for a masterclass in Creole cuisine and mountaintop meditation with the hotel’s resident yogi.

Your jet’s compass points due west as you soar to Rwanda. In this majestic Central African country, you’ll venture up the forested slopes of the Virunga Mountains in search of gorillas in their natural habitat — and meet the veterinarians who provide hands-on care for them. Onwards to the exotic Red City of Marrakech to tour the 16th-century Saadian Tombs, hike the Atlas Mountains, and immerse your senses in the vibrant Jemaa el Fna market.

Traverse the Atlantic to South America and get into the Colombian groove at its capital, Bogotá. Here you’ll let loose on the dance floor during a private salsa lesson and go on a quest for the best fruits, flowers, and more at an authentic Colombian food market with a Four Seasons chef.

No doubt the most enchanting place for wildlife in the world, the Galápagos Islands calls next. Seek out sea lions, penguins, and blue-footed boobies on this remarkable volcanic archipelago. Swap wildlife of the creature kind for the glamorous after-dark kind in Miami, your final port of call, which, will dazzle with its exuberant energy. Explore its cutting-edge art scene, savor Cuban cuisine in Little Havana, and check out South Beach as you round up your World of Adventures voyage.

Three days in the Peruvian Highlands beckon. The Andes mountains are a splendid backdrop for witnessing the mighty Incan Empire as you journey to Machu Pichu, Madras, and Cusco. Embrace the energy of Buenos Aires. Dubbed the “Paris of South America,” this mesmerizing Argentinian city will capture your heart with a backstage tour of Teatro Colón and tango lessons.

Don your thermal-wear and be prepared for a polar expedition like no other. From the moment he planted roots in Cashiers, Dan invested in lasting relationships and established a recognizable, respected name on the Highlands-Cashiers Plateau.

With an unparalleled ability to connect community members for a greater purpose, Dan has achieved substantial success in both personal and professional aspirations. Recently, Dan hosted a town hall meeting with Jackson County’s newest Sheriff, Doug Farmer, and his team which created space to voice concerns, build bridges, and explore how we can continue to improve this paradise we get to call home.

NC LIVING FALL 2023 23
RAISED IN CARY, NC, DAN ALLEN EMBODIES A ZEST FOR ADVENTURE, COMMUNITY, AND REAL ESTATE.
WITH BROKER DAN ALLEN

Yet, beyond the real estate listings and successful transactions lies a man deeply connected to his surroundings. Whether he’s exploring the picturesque trails of Cashiers, indulging in local festivals, or simply basking in the rustic charm of mountain life, Dan’s perspective offers a fresh take on what it means to call the Plateau home.

Dan’s sincerity for his life’s passions — nature, animals, friends and family, and real estate — is readily apparent upon your first interaction with the quick-witted, long-time North Carolinian. For the fall issue of NC Living Magazine , we sat down with him to see what drives one of the leading brokers on the Highlands-Cashiers Plateau.

TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOUR BACKGROUND, WHAT LED YOU TO WORK IN REAL ESTATE, AND HOW LONG YOU’VE BEEN A BROKER.

I grew up in Cary, NC and took regular family trips to both the ocean and mountains as child, but I felt most drawn to the mountains; I’ve always been passionate about nature and there’s so much to see and experience in the wilderness! Eventually, I decided the mountains were where I needed to be, so in my early 20s, I headed west from Cary and eventually settled here in the Cashiers area. I worked in a few different places (including The Orchard — go to page 28 for NC Living’s exclusive access!) before real estate crossed my radar, at which point I dove in head first. I earned my license in 2004, so it’s been nearly 20 years, which is hard to believe. As a people person, I enjoy the interactions element of the job. My adoration of the mountain lifestyle makes it easy to relate when someone describes their ultimate mountain escape, so it’s a true pleasure to be the treasure hunter who helps my clients realize their dreams.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN WITH SILVER CREEK REAL ESTATE GROUP AND WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO WORK WITH THEM?

I happened upon Jochen [Lucke, founder] on several occasions around the area. During conversations with him, I saw his tenacity and vision; I knew from the outset — just had a gut feeling — that Silver Creek was going to achieve big things. I knew it was where I belonged and that I could be a part of building it into the powerhouse it is today. I joined the firm shortly after its inception in 2008 and have never looked back. I’m grateful for the opportunities I’ve had as one of the original agents with Silver Creek and can’t imagine working with any other team.

WHEN YOU’RE NOT SELLING REAL ESTATE, HOW DO YOU ENJOY SPENDING YOUR TIME? I get outside as much as possible! Nature is where I’m happiest and most at peace. As I write this sentence, I’m just back from a long hike with friends, foraging for mushrooms. Spending time with dear friends is always rewarding, whether spending a low-key evening at home or heading out to a local restaurant and listening to some live music. Hiking or camping with my other half and our dogs, working in the garden and around our farm, or just basking in the sun and taking in the sights and sounds of the great outdoors — there’s nothing else like mountain life.

...WE CHOSE DAN TO REPRESENT US BECAUSE HE HAD AN IN-DEPTH KNOWLEDGE OF THE LOCAL REAL ESTATE MARKET AND WAS EXTREMELY PROFESSIONAL, BUT WHAT WE LEARNED ABOUT DAN THROUGHOUT THE PROCESS WAS THAT HE WAS DRIVEN TO DO THE BEST JOB HE COULD FOR US AND THAT WE COULD TRUST HIM...

...WE APPRECIATED THAT WHILE HE FERVENTLY REPRESENTED US AS SELLERS, HE STROVE TO COMPLETE THE TRANSACTION WHILE MAINTAINING CIVILITY, GRACIOUSNESS, AND INTEGRITY... DAN IS ONE OF THOSE RARE PROFESSIONALS WHO CAN FOCUS ON THE BIG PICTURE AND THE ULTIMATE GOAL, BUT WHO ALSO PAYS ATTENTION TO THE DETAILS THAT CAN EASILY TURN INTO DEAL BREAKERS OR DEAL MAKERS...

...WE HAVE BOUGHT AND SOLD MANY HOMES, VACATION HOMES, AND RENTAL PROPERTIES OVER THE YEARS, AND I THINK IT IS A RARITY TO WALK AWAY FROM A REAL ESTATE TRANSACTION AND BELIEVE YOUR AGENT DID THE BEST THEY COULD FOR YOU. WE TRULY BELIEVE THIS OF DAN...

NC LIVING FALL 2023 25

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE SEASON ON THE PLATEAU?

Fall is a close second, when the evenings start to bring a chill... there’s just something romantic about fall, with the changing of the leaves, the winding down of the year and a slower pace... and as much as I enjoy a good winter snowstorm and hunkering down at the house in front of the fireplace, nothing beats the arrival of spring and the reawakening of nature! The mountains steadily brighten from gray to green and everything comes back to life. The warmth of the spring sun seems to make everything better. It’s exciting — it’s all about renewal. Tilling the garden and starting seeds... getting back outside and into the sun. Spring is when I feel most invigorated, like there’s no limit to what can be achieved.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE FESTIVAL OR SPECIAL EVENT THAT TAKES PLACE ON THE PLATEAU?

With so many opportunities to get out and socialize — arts and crafts shows, music festivals, all the events on the Village Green like the upcoming Leaf Festival — it’s difficult to pin down just one. I really enjoyed the most recent Highlands Food & Wine Festival, though. Such a fantastic event — the cuisines, the live music, the energy, and seeing so many friends. Not even the rain stopped us from making great memories!

OUTSIDE

OF THE

PLATEAU, WHERE IS YOUR FAVORITE PLACE TO TRAVEL AND WHERE DO YOU HOPE TO TRAVEL TO SOON?

I’m working toward Europe! It’s been a long time since my last trip there, but my sights are now set

on Switzerland. Visiting the Alps, the Matterhorn, Lake Lucerne, and some castles and absorbing the history of the area would be amazing. I’d also love to get to South Africa. A safari is on my bucket list and several friends have told me about Landolozi — it sounds like a must-do! In the meantime, I always enjoy visits with family here, or in Cary where I grew up, or traveling farther across NC to our beautiful beaches. We recently traveled to Florida and got to swim with manatees — an incredible experience! And I’ll never tire of the vast options available in Washington, DC — the whole city is steeped in history and culture and I see or learn something new every time I visit.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO SOMEONE STARTING THEIR SEARCH FOR A HOME ON THE PLATEAU?

Purchasing a home is a big decision and it’s critical that you ensure you’re considering all your options. It’s not just about the individual property. You have to recognize the bigger picture. Exploring different neighborhoods and the areas that surround them is essential; each one has a different feel, different features, different amenities, different people. It’s pertinent to understand that you’re choosing not just a home, but a lifestyle, so make sure it’s one that’s consistent with your expectations.

WHAT IS THE MOST VALUABLE THING YOU’VE LEARNED WHILE WORKING AS

A BROKER?

Listen more, talk less. Give each client the opportunity to speak freely and genuinely hear what they’re saying. Then, read between the lines and offer ideas they may not have thought of. Open their minds to possibilities that weren’t originally on their radar, to ensure they’re achieving their heart’s desire. And there are so many personalities! Learning how to read people and fully comprehend their wants, needs, and expectations is vital to anyone working with the general public, but more so in some professions. Working as a real estate broker is a lot more than listing and showing properties. You become adviser, counselor, and mediator during the process, so you have to have a clear vision of what’s paramount to your client, to make the process as seamless and simple for them as it can possibly be.

BLACKENED SALMON WITH A MANGO SALSA, ADLUH MILL GRITS, GREENS, CILANTRO LIME CRÈME FRAÎCHE

Steeped in history, surrounded by nature, and infused with passion, The Orchard Restaurant has delivered epicurean masterpieces for over 23 years. In 2000, the Boswell brothers, Chad and Travis, opened the doors of the historic 100-year-old home with great care and consideration. The result? An atmosphere brimming with Southern hospitality, diligent service, and exceptional dishes highlighting local produce. Tuck into the ambiance and let The Orchard make all your foodie dreams come true.

The culinary magic happens under the watchful eye of lead chef Iwayan Sudiartama, a virtuoso who has been with The Orchard family for about two decades. Chef Sudiartama serves up elaborate dishes, considering everyone’s dietary needs, that will have the whole table planning their next visit. We are still reminiscing about our last meal — the blackened salmon with a mango salsa, Adluh mill grits, greens, cilantro lime crème fraîche special — and the bacon wrapped boneless quail breast, creamy leek risotto, garden kale, and molasses port wine glaze. Let’s just say it was a symphony of flavors, each complementing the other. For our vegetarian friends, the Dark Cove Garden Risotto is an absolute must. The indulgent mushroom-stuffed dish is loaded with Dark Cove Farm’s goat cheese, served atop a creamy vegetable risotto and topped with a toasted Roma tomato sauce. Every dinner should end with something sweet, so we delighted in Chef’s dessert special: a decadent blueberry and white chocolate bread pudding.

NC LIVING FALL 2023 31
BACON WRAPPED BONELESS QUAIL BREAST, CREAMY LEEK RISOTTO, GARDEN KALE, MOLASSES PORT WINE GLAZE

After dinner, we caught up with Chad and chatted about some of their most memorable evenings at The Orchard. While there have been so many heartwarming stories over the last 23 years, he shared one particular evening that captured The Orchard’s spirit and dedication to hospitality. “It was several years ago, before opening the Events Barn in 2009. We had a birthday party booked with thirty out-of-town guests, all staying at hotels on the Plateau. Power is a significant requirement to run a successful restaurant, and, on the day of the party, we had a severe power outage that threatened to cancel the festivities. While calling them to notify them of the cancellation, they convinced us to stay open and proceed with the party. Rising to the occasion, we lit candles throughout the dining room and set up camping lanterns in the kitchen for dinner service. While I love serving dinners with the power on, that night was filled with such warmth and soul I will never forget it. Just as the candles on the birthday cake

were extinguished, the power came on, and the guests promptly requested to turn off the lights and keep the night going as planned. Some of the best experiences are when you have to pivot and go with the flow.”

In 2009, the Guest Cottage opened. While often booked by event attendees, it is available to rent for anyone seeking a peaceful retreat for parties of two. Once the Events Barn opened in 2015, more unique and intimate events could be hosted, allowing The Orchard team to flourish.

In 2020, The Orchard opened the Virtual Larder Shop, offering fresh provisions and goods. An ingenious venture birthed out of the COVID-19 pandemic, the shop allows patrons to place orders online and select the date and time of pickup. Stock ranges from bacon wrapped boneless quail breasts from Plantation Quail in Greensboro, GA, to Dark Cove Farms garlic chive goat cheese (an NC Living favorite!). The Larder

32 SILVER CREEK REAL ESTATE GROUP

Shop also offers pantry staples, base ingredients, and an extensive selection of wines and beers. We recommend grabbing a case of Meiomi Pinot Noir or Sierra Nevada Brewing Company’s Hazy Little Thing IPA.

At the heart of the Virtual Larder Shop is their partnership with Fishes and Loaves food pantry and The Boys & Girls Club, reflecting their commitment to community support. Shoppers can make donations in $10 increments, which are used to purchase food from their purveyors and given directly to these organizations.

Book your reservations for dinner or your next event, or place your provisional order at theorchardcashiers.com . Share your favorite Orchard moment on social media using #NCLOrchardMoments we’ll see you there!

PROST!

Oktoberfest isn’t all beer and bratwurst. The largest folk festival in the world, Oktoberfest draws six million visitors to the German city of Munich each Fall — and for good reason. A rich celebration of Bavarian traditions, community, and camaraderie, Oktoberfest dazzles with everything from fairground rides and folksy festivities to parades and theatrical extravaganzas.

Of course, the mind-boggling array of local craft brews is still its biggest draw. With around 40 beer tents — ranging from cavernous to pint-sized — Oktoberfest is where you can sip your Hefeweizen and Helles amid a joyous carnival-like atmosphere.

So don your dirndl or let loose your lederhosen, and raise your stein with a hearty ‘prost!’ for Germany’s biggest party.

A RATHER ROYAL WEDDING CELEBRATION

When Crown Prince Ludwig was set to wed Princess Therese of Saxony-Hildburghausen back in October 1810, he wanted the entire city of Munich to join in the celebrations. To mark the occasion, a large feast with horse racing was held on the Theresienwiese grounds. It proved such a hit with locals that it turned into an annual fiesta, and Oktoberfest was born.

Over the centuries, Oktoberfest has evolved with the addition of an agricultural fair, beer tents, street food stalls, performers, and rollicking rides. To this day it continues to be reborn and in its 200-year-

When the clock strikes noon, the Lord Mayor of Munich taps the first keg inside the Schottenhamel tent and shouts, ‘O’Zapft is!’ (It is tapped!) and only when this happens can the first Oktoberfest beer be served. And so, starts over a fortnight’s worth of fun.

DRINKING

Oktoberfest adheres to strict rules. Every beer must be brewed within Munich’s city limits and only six breweries serve: Paulaner, Augustiner, Hofbräu, Löwenbräu, Hacker-Pschorr, and Spaten. Giant tents evoke vast bierkeller halls, and the energy and atmosphere are pure Bavaria;

plus history, Oktoberfest has only been canceled due to war, cholera epidemics, and COVID-19.

OKTOBERFEST 2023

The 188th Oktoberfest descends onto Munich this Fall. But what to expect at ‘Wiesn’ (as it’s affectionately dubbed by locals)? Starting with a bang on September 16th, Oktoberfest’s opening parade will see a procession of landlords, marching bands, horse carriages, and flag bearers in traditional costumes making their way from Josephspitalstraße to the Theresienwiese.

36 SILVER CREEK REAL ESTATE GROUP

long communal benches invite conversation and communal spirit, flags and elaborate floral arrangements bring vibrant cheer, while oompah bands parp and steins clink in the background.

Each of the Big Six breweries has its own tent (some accommodating up to 8,000), but making your way around all of them will be nearimpossible — so don’t even attempt it. Instead, pick a handful that serves a brew type that whets your palate, be it a medium-bodied Märzen or a rich, malty Dunkel.

Although each tent has its own unique vibe, whichever one you find yourself in, one thing will be certain: ‘gemütlichkeit’ (good cheer!) in spades. Don’t be afraid to join in on the traditional toasts and engage in friendly conversations with locals and fellow festival-goers alike.

Yes, it’s a beer festival, but if brews aren’t your bag, make a beeline for the Weinzelt wine tent. Here you’ll find wine, prosecco, and champagne — and, best of all, the Weinzelt is open until 1 a.m.

DINING

Luckily, local Bavarian delicacies are far more than just stomach-liners. Oktoberfest is a gastronome’s dream, and the warm smell of grilled chicken permeates the air. Although you can grab bratwurst-in-a-bun in nearly all the major beer tents, the smaller tents along the Wirtsbudenstraße are the main foodie hotspots.

parlor. Lunch on roast chicken, goose, and duck at the Goldener Hahn mountain lodge. Fancy fish? Fisch-Bäda serves over 20 different types of fish sandwiches. Or, for something a little more sophisticated, pair fresh oysters with a glass of champagne.

Wiesn has tasty grab-and-go nibbles by the bucketload along its avenue of wooden booths. Here, you’ll be tempted by sweet apfelkücherl (fried apple rings), Bavarian cheese, giant pretzels, and lebkuchen gingerbread hearts.

Fear not, vegans and vegetarians, Oktoberfest isn’t just for carnivores. Tasty, meat-free options like Allgäu cheesy spaetzle noodles, vegetablepotato patties, and organic sauerkraut strudel are served to satisfy.

MERRIMENT

“An Oktoberfest without the Schichtl is unthinkable,” Munich’s former mayor once said. “It is as essential as the beer, the radish, and the chicken.” Since 1869, Oktoberfest’s Schichtl theater stage has showcased weird and wonderful performances. Don’t miss the rather curious tradition of ‘daily decapitations’ by guillotine. Aside from the bizarre beheadings, you’ll be able to catch cabaret and other fun performances at the Schichtl.

For a taste of the Oktoberfests of yore, venture to the Oidn Wiesn. This nostalgia-tinged zone presents historic rides and vintage attractions like the Kettenflieger Kalb carousel from 1919. Immerse yourself in the festival’s past at the Zuseumszelt museum tent, which showcases historical organs and shooting galleries.

Believe it or not, Oktoberfest is remarkably well geared up for children and Tuesdays are family days with reduced ride prices. Kids will love the adrenaline-fueled fun of fairground rides, from the world’s largest transportable roller-coaster, Olympia Looping, to traditional carousels. Get an epic, birds-eye-view of the festival from the 50m high ferris wheel. The dedicated Familienplatzl is a child-friendly area where parents can chill (with a brew still, obviously) away from the main festival madness. Kindergarten with a beer on tap? What’s not to love!

STYLE

Looking the part at Oktoberfest isn’t just customary, it’s pretty much essential. Deeply rooted in Bavarian culture, dirndls and lederhosen are iconic symbols of Wiesn. For women, it’s all about the dirndl. Consisting of a bodice, blouse, and full skirt, the dirndl is adorned with intricate embroidery, lace, and colorful patterns. The length of the dirndl can vary, ranging from flirty, above-the-knee styles to ankle-length. Aprons not only complete the look but are super-handy for mopping up any beer spills.

For men, it’s time to flash those legs in lederhosen. Traditional leather shorts complete with buttons and suspenders, most men pair lederhosen with a checkered shirt and knee-length socks. When you want to look Wiesn-ready,

the official Oktoberfest website has a costume boutique to purchase your full festival attire.

WHERE TO STAY

Luxurious indulgence and opulent stays await those seeking the ultimate Oktoberfest experience in Munich. This cosmopolitan city boasts historic hotels with timeless charm and chic, contemporary accommodations with topnotch amenities. Unwind after a long day on the Theresienwiese at one of these stylish hotels.

As one would expect from the exquisite Rocco Forte portfolio, The Charles Hotel is one of Munich’s sleekest retreats. An easy 15-minute amble to the Theresienwiese, The Charles offers large, modern rooms with striking artwork. Its Italian restaurant, Sophia, is beloved by in-theknow locals, and there’s a spa, too, for when you want some relaxing Oktoberfest respite.

On the cusp of Munich’s pretty Old Town and backing onto the famous Hofbräuhaus beer cellar, the Mandarin Oriental Munich has a glamorous yet boutique vibe. Marrying NeoBiedermeier style with Asian design elements, it’s endlessly chic. Chill out at the stunning Mahjong Roof Garden which overlooks the entire city.

Oozing heritage German splendor, Bayerischer Hof is Munich’s grand dame hotel. A hop and skip from the city center, Marienplatz, Bayerischer Hof combines classical furnishings with modern touches. Its Blue Spa has a giant pool high above the Munich skyline and there’s even an in-house nightclub, cinema, and piano bar for postOktoberfest entertainment.

Within staggering distance of Oktoberfest, the five-star Sofitel Munich Bayerpost occupies a smart, neoclassical building, once the Royal Post Office. Inside, it has a clean, thoroughly contemporary feel, with cool leather and brass finishes. Choose from multiple room and suite tiers and dine on modern French cuisine at its DÉLICE La Brasserie restaurant.

OKTOBERFEST CHEAT SHEET

• Oktoberfest 2023 runs from Saturday September 16th - Tuesday October 3rd at the Theresienwiese, Munich.

• Monday through Friday, the tents open at 10 a.m. and close at 11:30 p.m.

• On Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays, beer is served at 9 a.m., and the last beer tapping is at 11:30 p.m.

• Centrally located, the Theresienwiese is accessible by metro, taxi, or by foot.

• Oktoberfest has free entry, but it is possible — and advisable — to reserve tables for small and large groups in advance to guarantee seating.

• Steins can only be raised after Oktoberfest is officially started with a gun salute and the mayor declaring, “O’ zapft is!” (“It’s tapped!”)

• Almost all tents serve beer in 1-liter steins.

• Beer is brewed especially for Oktoberfest and is strong with at least 6% alcohol… so sip slowly!

• Approximately 7.5 million liters of beer are imbibed each year at Oktoberfest.

• Oktoberfest steins were traditionally made of stone, then metal, but now they’re mostly made of glass.

• Pre-plan and book your table reservations, flights, and accommodation early.

• Even though it’s 2023, most tents prefer cash rather than cards, so come with a full wallet.

WHAT A WONDERFUL WORLD

TAKE A TRIP AROUND THE GLOBE WITH SEVEN SIGHTS

SPRINGING STRAIGHT FROM NATURE

The Earth is packed with awe-inspiring natural marvels created from nothing but the processes of geology and life. Yet many go underappreciated in favor of more modern, manmade achievements.

The Seven Natural Wonders Foundation teamed up with cable broadcaster CNN to change that, compiling a list of the “Seven Natural Wonders of the World” to inspire people to visit and preserve all of the wild and amazing natural places on the planet.

AURORA BOREALIS

Bright waves of blues, greens, purples and pinks dazzle across the pitch-black night sky each winter in the northern reaches of the globe. No, it is not a laser light show, but the natural phenomenon, aurora borealis, also known as the northern lights.

Geomagnetic storms on the sun shoot electrons out at high speeds, which collide with particles such as nitrogen and oxygen in Earth’s atmosphere, releasing light as they calm down.

The stunning displays, seen as a colored glow or waves, occur from September to April in northernlatitude places such as Alaska, northern Canada, Iceland, Greenland, Estonia, Finland, Sweden and Norway — the closer to the North Pole, the better.

The best locations to see the aurora may be frigidly cold, but they also have little-to-no light pollution and clear skies. They also have quite a dark backdrop, with only a few hours of sunlight during the season. In the far north, during Polar Night, the sun does not rise above the horizon for two months.

VICTORIA

FALLS

Deep in southern Africa, the calm waters of the Zambezi River, the fourth longest in Africa, violently plunge into the depths of a 355-footdeep gorge.

The largest waterfall curtain in the world, Victoria Falls flows at the border between Zimbabwe and Zambia. Victoria drops into a narrow chasm of just 80–240 feet wide and more than a mile long.

72 SILVER CREEK REAL ESTATE GROUP word S b Y L i SA k L ein

At the bottom of the falls is a deep pool called the Boiling Pot, where the waters of the Zambezi churn among rocks and rapids.

Victoria Falls is known for not only its size and unique shape, but for the mist and rainbows created by its waters. Locals named the waterfall Mosi-oa-Tunya — “the smoke that thunders.”

The clouds of mist rising from the gorge can be seen from more than 30 miles away and the crashing water can be heard beyond 24 miles. The falls are surrounded by lush forests and grasslands populated by a menagerie of African animals such as hippopotamuses, antelopes, elephants, giraffes, zebras, lions and leopards.

MOUNT EVEREST

The bucket list climb to top them all, Mount Everest rises above everything else on Earth. The highest point on the planet’s surface, on the border of Nepal and Tibet, Everest towers 29,032 feet from base to peak.

Part of a massif in the Himalayas, it lies at a focal point of tectonic action between the Indian and Eurasian plates and continues to grow by a fraction of an inch every year — layers of granite, limestone and ancient sedimentary rock pushed up over millennia.

NORTHERN LIGHTS AT NANGUNIEMI LAKE INARI, LAPLAND. PHOTO BY PERTTI TURUNEN, COURTESY OF VISIT FINLAND.

The peak of Everest is so high that oxygen levels are a third of those at sea level. That, combined with strong winds and extreme cold, means nothing lives near the summit.

Mountain climbers come to the area — which is so remote there were no roads until recently — for a fleeting chance to reach that summit, which was only first accomplished in 1953 by Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay. Since then, more than 6,000 people have made it to the top, while 300plus have perished trying.

GUANABARA BAY

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, is known for many things — its fun-loving Carioca culture, wild Carnival celebrations and colorful samba music. But one nature-made Rio icon embodies them all — Guanabara Bay.

Bays form when ocean water erodes softer materials on shore, stopping when it reaches harder ones. This picturesque and massive one on the Atlantic coast is surrounded by granite monoliths and mountains, such as Sugar Loaf Mountain, and dotted with more than 130 small islands, the shores loaded with beaches and the famed Christ the Redeemer statue towering in the distance.

Guanabara Bay, about 19 miles long and 18 miles wide, is the largest in the world by water volume. The bay holds not just water but the history of Brazil.

There is evidence of native peoples at the bay dating back to prehistoric times. When Portuguese explorers landed there on a 16th-century January day, they thought they were at the mouth of a giant river, naming the spot River of January — Rio de Janeiro.

PARICUTÍN VOLCANO

One of the youngest volcanoes in the world, Paricutín erupted for nine years in the Mexican state of Michoacán, 200 miles west of Mexico City.

A cinder cone volcano, which erupts from a single opening in the earth’s crust and ends up with a bowl-shaped crater and steep sides, Paricutín lies on the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt, which includes the Sierra Nevada Mountain range.

Until 1943, Paricutín was not there. After weeks of small earthquakes and loud rumblings, a fissure opened in a local farmer’s cornfield and within hours, a crater had formed. The volcano rose 1,475 feet in its first year, continuing to spew lava and ash until 1952 and burying the town that is its namesake.

Paricutín now stands at 9,210 feet with a 660-foot-wide crater and is considered to be dormant. Earthquakes are still common in the area and the volcano remains hot enough that rainwater creates steam when it falls on it, but visitors can climb all the way to the top.

GREAT BARRIER REEF

There is only one living thing on Earth that is visible from space, and it lies underwater. The world’s largest formation created by organisms, the Great Barrier Reef is also the largest “rainforest of the sea.”

The small, soft-bodied coral polyp is responsible for the many coral reefs in the oceans, constructing hard exoskeletons for themselves out of calcium carbonate secretions. When they congregate together, the results are watery ecosystems teeming with life — and mustvisit locations for every avid scuba diver and snorkeler.

The Great Barrier Reef covers 134,000 square miles off the northeastern coast of Australia, consisting of more than 900 islands and 3,000 distinct reef formations.

Although spectacular from above, the real action is underneath the surface. One of the most diverse ecosystems in the world, 25 percent of all known marine species can be found in the reef: 600 types of coral, 1,600 species of fish, rays, dolphins, sharks, whales, sea turtles, giant clams and the endangered Dugong, among them.

GRAND CANYON

Standing out among the many canyons formed along rivers across the world is the Grand Canyon in Arizona, in the southwestern United States, thanks to its seemingly neverending vistas.

The gorge was carved over millions of years by the meandering Colorado River and now hits about 6,000 feet at its deepest point. The canyon, known for its rust reds and sedimentary stripes that keep geologic time, cuts through 277 miles in the desert. Some rock deposits found at the bottom date back 2 billion years.

As seen from its rims, the canyon stretches as far as the eye can see. Hiking trails lead through the surrounding desert landscape. It is also possible to hike all the way to the bottom or take a white-water rafting trip through the towering canyon walls.

From above, the South Rim — the most popular viewpoint — is open all year long. The North Rim is much more remote and less crowded, but is only open from May to October due to weather.

THE YOSEMITE OF THE EAST

From the towering trees, creeping vines, and wildflower-covered grounds to the broad valleys, granite rock faces, sheer gorges, and roaring waterfalls, Western North Carolina is a paradise for lovers of the great outdoors. There is endless opportunity for outdoor recreation; whether you enjoy fishing and boating or hiking, biking, and horseback riding, this area offers something for everyone with an adventurous spirit.

We are uniquely positioned on the HighlandsCashiers Plateau to explore the natural beauty of the Blue Ridge Mountains, and lucky for us, thousands of backcountry trails exist right in our own back yard.

Panthertown Valley is a treasured public, backcountry area and black bear sanctuary. Its 6,311 acres are located in the Nantahala National Forest, between Lake Toxaway and Cashiers. Panthertown is located on ancestral lands of the Tsalaguwetiyi (Cherokee East) and potentially other tribes, so its lands are rich with history. Unlike a National or State Park, which may offer some frontcountry amenities and experiences, Panthertown is entirely wild and unforgiving, offering more than 30 miles of designated trails for hiking, biking, and horseback riding, as well as camping, fishing, and climbing. Many of the trails are old logging roads leading to waterfalls, bogs, and spectacular valley and cliff-face overlooks.

Working in partnership with the U.S. Forest Service, Friends of Panthertown is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to conserving Panthertown as a backcountry natural resource and enabling sustainable recreation. Since 2005, the organization has been raising funds, and training and coordinating hundreds of volunteers, for trail maintenance and conservation projects within Panthertown Valley.

The group is responsible for restoring and maintaining the area’s 30 miles of public, nonmotorized, multi-use trails; constructing trailhead facilities, repairing bridges and existing structures; protecting natural resources and monitoring fragile ecosystems; and providing funding for conservation projects through grants and contributions. With a strong commitment to environmental stewardship, volunteerism, and raising public awareness, Friends of Panthertown also engages in outreach and education to strengthen public knowledge of Panthertown’s diverse ecosystem and ways to enjoy the outdoors sustainably.

You can become a friend of Panthertown Valley by volunteering or donating in support of their conservation and stewardship work. Sign up for one of their Trail Workdays (no previous experience required) or make a donation via their website at panthertown.org.

EXPLORING

HIKING, BIKING & HORSEBACK RIDING

There are countless trails to choose from when visiting Panthertown Valley; some take you to picturesque waterfalls, while others lead you to incredible scenic overlooks. Most of the trails in Panthertown have been there since before 1989, when the large swath of land was purchased from Moltz Lumber Co., Liberty Insurance, and Duke Power, becoming part of Nantahala National Forest. Popular hikes in Panthertown Valley include Schoolhouse, Granny, and Frolicktown Falls, Salt Rock Gap, and the Overlook Trail. Be sure to check the designated uses for each trail, as specific trails are marked for mountain bikes and horses. Anyone entering Panthertown Valley is strongly encouraged to come prepared with a map and compass and to know how to use them! Friends of Panthertown highly recommend Burt Kornegay’s A Guide’s Guide to Panthertown (2017 revision)

CAMPING

All camping in Panthertown Valley is dispersed and primitive, meaning no designated campsites or amenities exist. Campsites are limited to no more than 12 people per site, and campsites cannot be within 50 feet of water sources. Bearresistant containers are required for all overnight camping in Panthertown Valley, and proper precautions should always be taken to limit the chance of bear/human interactions, which we will discuss further below.

FISHING

Located on the Western North Carolina Fly-Fishing Trail, anglers from across the world travel to cast a line into the waters of Panthertown Valley and Panthertown Creek. With the headwaters of the East Fork of the Tuckasegee River and 20 miles of native brook trout streams that include Panthertown, Greenland, and Flat Creeks, there is endless opportunity for landing a spectacular catch. All fishing in Panthertown is catch-andrelease, artificial lures only , and you must have a valid NC fishing license.

LEAVE NO TRACE

The great outdoors can have a profound impact on us, from our physical health to our mental wellbeing, but in turn, we need to keep our impact on the great outdoors to a minimum. As lovers and stewards of responsible recreation in nature, we should all be mindful of the 7 Principles of Leave

No Trace. Plan and prepare before you set off on your adventure or activity, bring a good map and compass and know how to use them. Check the weather and always be prepared for extreme weather events, hazards, and emergencies; repackage food to minimize waste; and visit in small groups during low-use times. Travel and camp on durable surfaces for your protection and the protection of the ecology, stay on marked and maintained trails, and avoid shortcuts through the woods. Remember, good campsites and trails are found, not made!

Dispose of waste properly and always pack out what you pack in, leaving behind no trash, leftover food, or litter. Leave what you find and take only your photos home with you, making sure all rocks, plants, and natural objects remain undisturbed in their environment. Minimize campfire impacts by using a lightweight stove for cooking, candle lanterns for light, and only utilizing established fire rings, fire pans, or mound fires. Keep them small and put them out completely! Respect wildlife , always observe from a distance, and never follow or approach. Do not feed animals or leave behind food scraps (including fruit and their peels), and always control your pets or leave them at home. Venomous copperheads and rattlesnakes are common in Panthertown, so make sure to watch your step. When visiting Panthertown, be considerate of the land, wildlife, and other visitors. Stay on the trails and yield to others passing, avoid loud voices and noises, and be courteous to the enjoyment of all who make use of the trails and campsites.

For more information on the 7 Principles of Leave No Trace and best practices for sustainably outdoor recreation, visit the Leave No Trace website at lnt.org.

STAY “BEAR-AWARE”

As Panthertown is part of a protected bear sanctuary, it is important to stay “bear-aware” and take proper precautions to respect them and their natural habitat, as well as limit any possible interactions or attacks. These precautions include but are not limited to utilizing bear-proof food containers, keeping a clean camp, never storing food in your tent, and cooking away from where you sleep. The U.S. Forest Service requires the use of bear-resistant containers for all overnight camping to help prevent bear/human

78 SILVER CREEK REAL ESTATE GROUP

interactions, and they strongly recommend that you learn to understand bear mannerisms and how to react if you encounter a bear.

Food odors and improperly stored garbage will attract bears to campgrounds and picnic sites which means it is vital to maintain a clean camp and store any trash and food in your car or a bear-resistant container. Even items like toothpaste, deodorant, and beverages may tempt the nose of a hungry or curious bear. In 2020 Friends of Panthertown staff and volunteers installed two large metal “bear boxes” in the area. One is located near the Panthertown shelter on the valley floor, and the other is located near where Greenland Creek and Panthertown Creek meet to form the Tuckasegee River. EXPLORE AUSTRALIA AND NEW ZEALAND’S BUZZIEST PLACES TO LIVE

Beautiful climate, modern luxuries, vibrant cities and proximity to nature are all benefits of Australasia, the region of the Pacific Ocean that Australia and New Zealand inhabit.

Combine that with the remarkably few cases of COVID-19 during the peak of the pandemic, and the two countries are being eyed by expats and foreign investors alike as an ideal spot to put down roots.

“[New Zealand’s response to COVID] is only one benefit, of many, of buying property in New Zealand,” says Peter Thompson, managing director of Barfoot & Thompson in Auckland, New Zealand. “Others are open spaces, the friendliness and easy nature of Kiwis, and quality of life offered.

“Its population and economy are large enough to support those seeking a Western, fast-paced city lifestyle,” he says. “It remains a safe and secure place for those more interested in a family-focused life, while having the open spaces for those looking for a countryside retreat or wilderness adventures.”

Nick Boyd, head of network growth at the Lane Cove, New South Wales-based Belle Property, echoes similar sentiments about Australia, observing a return influx into the nation’s cities, especially those located along the coast.

“It’s the country that you like to look out the windows of, because you’re going to see the beaches, the harbors,” he says.

CITY SLICKER

Reverse migration back to urban centers after the mass-flight from cities in 2020 is already underway, especially as companies are making longer-term decisions on work-from-home policies.

“We’re starting to see a lot of people say, ‘No, no, no, I want my staff back in an office,’ and so that is a driver towards the big migration back into capital cities,” Mr. Boyd says.

Downsizing, too, is gaining traction once again, similar to pre-2020 trends.

“There’s a big wave of downsizers coming out that will be selling their residential homes to downsize into condo living or penthouse living,” Mr. Boyd says. “That will be a very big segment of the market for us in probably the next three to five years.”

Hotspots in Australia include the usual suspects: Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne. In these cities, construction of ultra-luxury condos is exploding.

“Any area that has beautiful scenery attached to the ocean seems to do really well,” Mr. Boyd says.

“The east coast of Australia, without question, is going to keep striving ahead.”

In New Zealand, top cities for buyers include Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch. Of note, the preference for single-family homes, rather than condos, remains strong in New Zealand.

“The luxury market in New Zealand is based around large, ultra-modern, standalone homes set in their own private estate setting, with outstanding water or country views,” Mr. Thompson says. “Privacy and personal security remain important features.”

Amenities such as home gyms, entertainment spaces and offices maintain popularity. Meanwhile, wall space for private art collections is also a top item — a potential nod to the growing favoritism of maximalist home design.

SKY’S THE LIMIT

Those downsizing into a condo are, by no means, downgrading their residence.

Luxury units coming on the market are full of hospitality-caliber amenities, exquisitely designed and within desired neighborhoods and locations.

Such attributes are not cheap.

“We now have high-end apartments being built that are going for anywhere between AUD $60,000 to $140,000 a square meter,” Mr. Boyd says. “We’re talking in excess of [AUD] $100 million

for apartments that are being forecasted and built into 2024, 2028.”

Isle Waterfront Newstead is a highly anticipated project in Australia being built by property development company Mirvac, located just one kilometer outside Brisbane’s central business district and estimated to be completed in late 2025. The project blends the best of city life and nature.

“The 25-level building embraces a biophilic architectural design that meaningfully connects residents to nature through groundfloor walkways blending into the surrounding parkland, lush subtropical planting that climbs the building’s façade, sculptural shade structures and breezy balconies,” says Stuart Penklis, head of residential at Mirvac.

Inside Isle’s apartments, pavilions and penthouses, this connection to nature continues through the use of timber-look joinery, reconstituted stone benchtops and floor-to-ceiling glass sliders welcoming natural light and breathtaking city, park or river views as well as natural materials such as travertine in the kitchens and bathrooms.

Design and amenities, of course, top the wish list for luxury buyers.

Resort-style amenities at Isle include a centerpiece infinity-edge swimming pool, wellness treatment room, magnesium spas, sunset cocktail space and a barbecue area that overlooks the Brisbane River and Waterfront Park.

“Living on the waterfront brings a sense of calm and tranquility, while providing additional linkages to the city and surrounds through boardwalks, public road and rail transport and ferries,” Mr. Penklis says.

BRISBANE, AUSTRALIA

Isle Waterfront is a direct reflection of Brisbane’s dedication to biodiversity.

In and around the city, there is an abundance of outdoor spaces and activities, including botanic gardens and parks, native plant life, well-stocked farmers’ markets, mountain outlooks, nearby waterfalls and the largest koala bear sanctuary in the world.

The Brisbane River, too, is a hub of activity, especially in the up-and-coming inner suburb of Newstead, where Isle Waterfront is set to be located.

“Newstead offers the quintessential outdoor lifestyle through the thoughtful development of its famous banks that boast walking and riding paths, parks, wharfs and entertainment venues,” Mr. Penklis says.

“Brisbane’s way of embracing the outdoors is evident on the streets of this iconic suburb, from the rooftop bars where celebrities clink cocktail glasses, to the beer gardens filled with sports fans,” he says.

South Banks, a neighborhood in Brisbane, is another premier space to live and enjoy the river, nearby cultural events, great dining, entertainment and shops.

SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA

Sydney offers the best of city life, with highend shopping at destinations such as the Queen Victoria Building and cultural landmarks including the Sydney Opera House, as well as the perks of living along the oceanfront, with activities comprising yachting and surfing.

Accordingly, the atmosphere is both refined and light-hearted, as residents enjoy various ways to unwind.

“In Sydney, we’re lucky to have an amazing city where people can work in the harbor or out on the beach,” says Luke Madden, CEO of Surfing NSW. “That’s really unique. People want that lifestyle.”

The beaches of Manly, Bondi and Cronulla are appealing for any sand seeker or aquatic sports enthusiast, the dramatic waves creating a fantastic ambiance and stunning scenery. The

surrounding neighborhoods are affluent and full of idyllic properties.

AUCKLAND, NEW ZEALAND

New Zealand’s most popular city also has many natural sights on offer, including waterfalls, volcanoes, beaches and islands, not to mention its dynamic seafood restaurants, social scene and cultural institutions.

“This city is our largest, is at the heart of the country’s business operations, and has the most convenient air connections with the rest of the world,” Mr. Thompson says.

“It has an excellent temperate climate, and outstanding coastal, water and countryside retreats,” he says. “The world-class sea views enjoyed by many luxury Auckland homes ensures they are always in demand.”

Waiheke Island, an island suburb of Auckland, is considered what the Hamptons are to New York. High-end homes and vineyards dot the community.

Mudbrick Vineyard, for instance, attracts celebrities ranging from Cindy Crawford to Taylor Swift.

Meanwhile, Matiatia Walk is a captivating coastal path, featuring a bi-annual outdoor art exhibition, Sculpture on the Gulf, with installations from local and international names.

QUEENSTOWN, NEW ZEALAND

Outside of the bustle, alongside Lake Wakatipu and the Southern Alps, sits Queenstown, an excellent alternative for those preferring something slower paced.

Queenstown excels in adrenaline-filled activities such as mountain biking, bungy jumping, hiking and skiing. Soothing day spas such as Onsen Hot Pools and a charming downtown keep residents relaxed and entertained.

“Those seeking outstanding lakeside and mountain surroundings favor Queenstown and Wanaka in the South Island, while the Bay of Islands in the North Island offers world-class beach and island retreats,” Mr. Thompson says.

CAR DESIGN TOOK OFF IN THE 1950S, TAKING INSPIRATION FROM — AND INSPIRING — POPULAR CULTURE IN A WAY THAT CONTINUES TO WOW

Few things epitomize American culture more than classic cars. Autos made during the 1950s were so enmeshed with society at the time that their influence on one another was indistinguishable.

During the decade, cars moved beyond sheer practicality and evolved into a pastime, evident in the rise of drive-in theaters, rock and roll, and expanding highway that forever changed city layouts and the ways in which regions of the country connected.

“The Fifties is arguably one of the most significant decades in all of automotive history,” says Jake Welk, marketing manager at LeMay — America’s Car Museum in Tacoma, Washington.

This shift in purpose was apparent in auto design.

“Cars of the ‘50s became sexier, with distinctive colors like greens, blues, yellows and pinks, along with flashy trim with heavy use of chrome on long, wide bodies,” Mr. Welk says. “Big headlights, chrome grilles, large tailfins and an overall flowing design were common.”

“This shaped the way we view cars forever, looking at them more as a status symbol and with a sense of fashion and creative and expressive design in a way that had never been seen before,” he says.

TAKING FLIGHT

Much of the cultural shift in the ‘50s is attributed to changing sentiments post-World War II. Not only was the car a simpler way to transport expanding families, but pop culture and entertainment were booming. Enjoying oneself was a top priority.

“Everybody was looking forward to something new,” says Chris Horning, car designer at the Gilmore Car Museum in Hickory Corners, Michigan. “It was a relief, you know. The world had been in a bad place for a long time and, all of a sudden, it wasn’t any more.”

Technological advancements, including those

NC LIVING FALL 2023 85

of the previous decade’s war, greatly affected car design.

“It’s a distinctive era in design,” Mr. Horning says. “In the ‘50s, right after the war, rockets were a big deal, so you see cars with great big, huge taillights that looked like rocket exhaust.”

In the mid-1950s, the Space Race took hold and commercial air travel was on the rise, further influencing design with features that mimicked the wings of an airplane and other fuselage-inspired attributes. These designs were slimmer and sleeker than the boxy models of the early decade.

“Anything from 1955 on seems to be more popular than the early- ‘50s cars, just because the design style was inspired by fuselage and was more streamlined, rather than the chunky look,” Mr. Horning says.

The 1957 Chevrolet Bel Air, for instance, one of the most iconic cars of the time, featured sleek tailfins on the back of the car.

The 1959 Cadillac Coupe DeVille, meanwhile, sported a wraparound windshield resembling that of an airplane.

“The ‘50s era certainly was space- and jet-age,” Mr. Horning says. “We see these in the big tailfins and science fiction-looking interiors.”

The boom in travel, both on the road and in the skies, in turn, influenced the infrastructure of the United States.

“Automobile design had an effect on the architecture of the United States and the way the towns were laid out,” Mr. Horning says.

Mr. Welk adds that “the highway system and infrastructure began to expand, creating longer roads that interconnected cities and states and allowed for higher-speed travel.”

Just as the rise of the automobile affected city layouts, better infrastructure led to even more drivers on the road, and the loop continued. The expansion of driving also meant safety was an increasing imperative.

“They began to adapt by adding new, innovative features and designs that created a whole new experience for the driver, including the introduction of power steering and automatic

transmissions,” Mr. Welk says. “Many of these design and safety features are still seen in cars being built today.”

TOUGH BIRDS

Aside from the design and culture surrounding classic cars, their durability ensured their longevity.

“Cars in the ‘50s were built very well and sturdy, and many of the vehicles that were built in the ‘50s that have been properly taken care of and restored over the years are still very durable and drivable, just as they were back when they were created,” Mr. Welk says.

Most collectibles are the makes and models most popular during the decade.

“The Big Three, as they became known, were General Motors, Chrysler and Ford,” Mr. Horning says. “Whatever they put out seemed to stamp out the other companies that were lacking in their engineering or development. They couldn’t offer all the options, and they fell behind.”

No feud, however, was as grand as General Motors’ Chevrolet race against Ford, which lingers today.

“The age-long argument ‘Ford-versus-Chevy’ really took flight in the ‘50s,” Mr. Welk says. “Both of these automobile manufacturers were fighting toe-to-toe in competition to outdo each other and produce the best, most-wanted vehicles on the road.”

Chevy gained even more popularity with singer Dinah Shore’s 1952 commercial turn urging Americans to “See the U.S.A. in your Chevrolet.”

The Ford Thunderbird was created to compete with the Chevrolet Corvette and, in its debut in 1955, greatly outsold the latter. Primarily, the battle was in the engine’s performance, with the rivals hoping to outpace one another in horsepower and speed.

Both models, however, remained icons of the 1950s, with versions released as late as 2005 for the Thunderbird and 2019 for the Corvette.

Other General Motors standouts included Buicks and Cadillacs, known for their luxury and familyoriented vehicles, such as the high-end Cadillac Series 62 or spacious Buick Special models.

PACKING IT IN

Less loved during their time were Studebakers and Packards, which have more recently found popularity as collector cars.

The 1951 Studebaker Commander was most famous for its “bulletnose” rounded front-exterior design, with the company advertising at the time, ‘The Next Look in cars is a ‘Jet-Propelled Look!’

Unfortunately for Studebaker, the bulletnose was short-lived and only a feature in its 1950–1952 models, as the company was sued by rival Tucker for patent infringement because it mimicked the design of some of Tucker’s models.

That said, this lawsuit was not Studebaker’s downfall. Financial issues haunted the company for decades before releasing its last model in 1966. Many experts now assert that, in retrospect, Studebaker was ahead of its time. It saw smaller cars as the future, which came to fruition in later decades, but released them too soon, at a time when bulkier cars were in vogue.

Packard released its last model in 1956. Although Packards were exceptional cars, they were quite expensive and could not remain competitive in the market.

Despite being beloved at car shows, old Packards and Studebakers are much more challenging to restore.

“They’re far more difficult to restore because there aren’t as many of them and people don’t tend to make the parts for them anymore,” Mr. Horning says. “There’s a huge market for ‘55 Chevy parts because there were so many made. Not so much a ‘55 Packard.”

JOINING THE RACE

European cars made their own mark on the industry. Leisurely vehicles were not the initial priority, but as the decade went on, the continent increasingly manufactured luxury and sports cars.

Post-World War II, “Europe was rebuilding, while the U.S. was building upon,” Mr. Horning says. “They were looking for cars that were much smaller and easier to drive around, and inexpensive trucks for hauling and fixing things and construction, so they developed truck companies that eventually turned into, or merged with, automobile companies.”

Horton, Opel and Audi are just some examples.

“It wasn’t until much later in the ‘50s, after they got done rebuilding, that amazing cars came out, like the Mercedes 300SL and Ferraris,” Mr. Horning says. “The racecars that came from Europe were just incredible cars.”

Meanwhile, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars and Bentley Motors were the epitome of luxury.

“That’s how the whole United States sports car clubs started, because these soldiers brought all these really cool cars back over,” Mr. Horning says.

UP THE VOLUME

Without question, the effects of the 1950s automotive industry are still felt today. The decade’s influence can be found all over American culture and in hints of modern vehicles.

“The ‘50s really shaped the way our society and culture is in America and laid the foundation for the way Americans have lived over the past 70 years since,” Mr. Welk says.

“Modern-day cars were, no doubt, shaped by the design features and innovations that were introduced in cars of the ‘50s,” he says. “However, cars, over time, have become more practical, focusing on safety and making the experience for the driver easier.”

Automobiles are also produced at far greater a scale, and with hybrid and electric-motor

YET THE INGENUITY of artistry and machinery persists in the decades-old vehicles still driving today, their quality undeniable. Alongside the physical cars are the memories.

“[Collectors] keep that interest in this area because they have these wonderful stories that they can relate to, that were told to them by their aunts and uncles and grandparents growing up and shared for years,” Mr. Horning says. “It’s fun to go to a car show and share the stories.”

Mr. Welk agrees.

“The automobile has always been one of America’s favorite pastimes,” he says. “It creates passion in all of us and connects us together in a way many other things cannot.”

options in addition to gaspowered combustion engines.

“Cars now are mass-produced like never before, and automotive manufacturers are now more focused on providing a high volume of vehicles for consumers rather than focusing on making them exotic and unique,” Mr. Welk says.

LAKE TOXAWAY ESTATES

Part of the grand vision of Pittsburgh entrepreneur E.H. Jennings in 1902, the rugged terrain associated with the area was transformed into a beautiful 614-acre mountain lake. Named by its creator, Lake Toxaway was the first artificial lake built in the Appalachians. Jennings began building the community by erecting The Toxaway Inn along the lake’s shoreline; he knew visitors would become as enamored with the area as he was. It quickly became a well-known retreat among the nation’s most well-to-do citizens, including Thomas Edison, Henry Ford, and Harvey Firestone. While on vacation at Lake Toxaway, socialite and Savannah native Lucy Camp Armstrong fell in love with the area. She bought 40 acres around the lake and built an estate, lavish gardens, and riding stables. During heavy rains in the summer of 1916, the area experienced flooding and a dam gave way, emptying Lake Toxaway completely. Armstrong’s estate and the Inn held fast, but with no lake, the area lost its appeal for the vacationing jet set. This event eventually led to the demise of The Toxaway Inn, which stood empty for 30 years before being demolished in 1948. Ms. Armstrong continued to love the area, took up permanent residence at her estate, and lived long enough to see her dream realized when the lake was restored to its original beauty in the 1960s. After her death in 1970, Ms. Armstrong’s estate was transformed into The Greystone Inn, the crown jewel of the Lake Toxaway community.

Vacationers continue to be drawn to the area just as Jennings and Armstrong once were. Today, Lake Toxaway Estates is the largest community on the lake, made up of a network of individual neighborhoods and outstanding amenities. Neighborhoods of this premier vacation home destination include Bear Wallow Springs, Club Colony, Deep Ford Falls, Hawk Mountain, Lakeside Mountain, Meadow Ridge, Panther Ridge, Sutton’s Cove and Toxaway Mountain. The settings for home sites in Lake Toxaway Estates vary widely — from a scenic view of either Lake Toxaway or Lake Cardinal to the peace and quiet of the heavily wooded forest to the excitement of a golf course or the majestic scenery of a mountain view. Amenities include access to the state’s largest private lake, as well as Lake Toxaway Country Club, featuring fine dining, tennis, swimming, fitness center and golf on an 18-hole championship golf course, designed by Kris Spence.

LONESOME VALLEY

With a history dating back to 1895, Lonesome Valley has served as a bastion to the great outdoors since Pittsburgh entrepreneur E.H. Jennings first acquired 35,000 acres near the sleepy village of Cashiers, North Carolina. Gracefully spanning the valley floor of the largest box canyon east of the Rockies, Lonesome Valley is said by many to be the place where Heaven and Earth meet. Cottage and home designs pay homage to the Southern Appalachian farmhouses of a bygone era. SIMS VALLEY

At the turn of the 20th century, Willis and Laura Sims settled in a high valley with clear 40-mile vistas of the Great Smoky Mountains in the west. They built a rustic mountain home, lived off the land, and raised their six

children here. Today, the valley is home to Sims Valley — a unique mountain community built in the same spirit as the Sims family homestead. It is a place of beauty, a place for families, a place where residents live in harmony with the nature that surrounds them.

Located between the historic towns of Cullowhee and Cashiers, Sims Valley provides its homeowners with the feeling of living within a national park, rather than a resort community. Intersected by winding nature trails, designed by Trail Dynamics (who often design for the National Park Service), Sims Valley offers many opportunities to let their residents’ spirits soar with the natural splendor that is housed within this oneof-a-kind property. The peaceful sound of cascading waterfalls, the exotic fragrance of mountain laurel and native wildflowers, and the awe-inspiring sight of the Smokies blend together for an exceptional outdoor experience. Go shopping or dining in Cashiers or Highlands, explore Nantahala National Forest, take a boat ride on Lake Glenville, or enjoy the many amenities that Sims Valley has to offer.

The Sims Family Homestead still stands and now serves as a community gathering place. In fact, there is no shortage of places for the community to gather together at Sims Valley. The Mountain Clubhouse contains a fitness center and spa, swimming pool, large great room with fireplace, caterer’s kitchen, outdoor grill, and two outdoor fireplaces, paired with some of the most amazing views available at the property. The Mountain Chapel — located at the north end of the property — offers an open-air gathering place for Sims Valley residents to enjoy a picnic, a roaring fire in the outdoor fireplace, or breathtaking vista of the valley and the mountains beyond.

NC LIVING FALL 2023 125 word S b Y e LL en jone S DISCOVERING THE ALLURE OF AUTUMN ON THE ISLAND FALLING FOR NANTUCKET

As Fall descends on Nantucket, New England foliage colors reveal themselves in shades of crimson and ochre, and East Coast vacationers slowly return to city life. Nestled off the coast of Massachusetts, this bucolic island is a haven of timeless beauty, and during the shoulder season, Nantucket’s peaceful appeal is amplified further.

From Sylvester Stallone to Drew Barrymore, Hollywood stars adore Nantucket’s privacy and beautiful beachside communities. But with society stars fully dispersed come Fall, Nantucket’s cobblestone streets, pristine beaches, and alluring trails become more secluded, allowing you to truly immerse yourself in the wonder of the island’s surroundings.

Whether you’re seeking a romantic autumnal escape or an off-season group getaway, Nantucket in the Fall promises an unforgettable experience. So, pack your favorite sweater, breathe in the salt-spray infused air, and prepare to fall in love with the island’s stunning natural landscapes, rich maritime history, and farm-tofork cuisine.

STAY

Be it elegant heritage hotels or epic waterfront compounds ( à la the A-list), you’re spoilt for choice with places to stay in Nantucket. For timeless harborside glamor, the iconic White Elephant has been a draw for Nantucket’s most discerning visitors for a century. Looking fresh after a multimillion-dollar revamp, the sprawling hotel now boasts a chic nautical vibe, with airy and bright rooms, a giant pool, and a serene spa.

Savor a signature Lobster

Bloody Mary at White Elephant’s legendary Brant Point Grill.

Perched on a blissfully quiet beach rather than in the main hubbub, The Wauwinet , White Elephant’s sister hotel, has been hosting guests since 1875 — 21st century stays are all about relaxation. Kick back in your homey, cottage-style room and gaze out over the garden across to shimmering Nantucket Bay. An adultsonly hotel, The Wauwinet is Nantucket’s premier romantic bolt-hole.

For grandeur on a more intimate scale, Greydon House (a timbered, former sea captain’s residence) aligns heritage style with modern bohemian luxury. Each of the 20 rooms is uniquely appointed with eclectic antiques and characterful soft furnishings. Spend an evening lingering over fine, Venetian-inspired dishes at Via Mare, Greydon House’s much-hyped, woodpaneled restaurant.

DINE

Nantucket’s vibrant culinary scene is all about the just-caught seafood and farm-to-table delights. The good news is that you’re just as likely to find sensational coastal cuisine whether you hit up a flash fine dining waterfront eatery or laidback bistro.

You’ll feel right at home at Òran Mór Bistro ; where prettily plated Italian-New England dishes are served in the cozy parlor of a smart historic house. Seat beside the fireplace and choose from black truffle bucanti or delightful fennel orecchiette pasta.

For Nantucket’s only AAA 5-diamond restaurant experience, seek out TOPPER'S at The Wauwinet. This is the island’s place to see and be seen — be it over a banquet brunch of oysters with Champagne mignonette or a roasted Gianonne chicken dinner — TOPPER’S offers irresistible ocean views as you rub shoulders with the Nantucket elite.

Ask any local (or visiting high-roller) for their recommendation, and they’d likely point you in the direction of Straight Wharf . This Nantucket institution has been serving its clam bake and iced Nantucket oysters for over 50 years. In downtown Nantucket, The Pearl’s stylish, Art Deco-esque environs create a wonderful backdrop for its incredible coastal Japaneseinspired dishes, whipped up with fabulous French techniques. Under new ownership, The Pearl has reimagined its 30-year legacy with innovative dishes such as salt and pepper wok-fried lobster with tatsoi and grilled lime.

DRINK

At CRU Oyster Bar , you come for the oysters but stay for the fizz. This marina hotspot set amid rows of sleek yachts has a casual vibe but plenty of energy as the day fades to night. Arrive for sunset and settle in, perusing the gargantuan wine list. Flawlessly curated with drops from all over the world, you’ll find excellent Champagne vintages alongside Old and New World international wines. Order a dozen local oysters (or caviar if you’re inclined).

Since starting as an indie microbrewery, Cisco Brewers has grown into a brewpub behemoth, with outposts all over New England. Its Nantucket venue is still the original and best. A winery, distillery, and brewery all rolled into one, as well as producing world-class wines, beers, and spirits, the ever-popular Cisco Brewers hosts live music every day, public production tours, and pop-up street food vendors.

For a taste of the island’s most inventive cocktails, Nautilus presents masterful mixology. A buzzy barrestaurant, Nautilus’ tapas-style small plates are best washed down with one of its imaginative (and strong) house libations. Take the zingy Nauti Dog; a lively vodka and Campari number mixed with ‘literally a whole grapefruit’. Or, for something spicy, try the Quick Tickle, with mezcal, itachi cucumber, and pickled jalapenos.

DO

Nantucket grew rich from its 19thcentury whaling industry, and this has left an indelible maritime legacy that’s present everywhere you turn. Immerse yourself in the island’s whaling heritage at the Nantucket Whaling Museum . Learn about the island’s sea-faring past, view fascinating exhibits, and climb to the top of Tucker’s Roofwalk observation deck for panoramic harborside views.

Soak up the charm of Downtown Nantucket by meandering through its cobbled streets and historic buildings. Not only is it to-die-for pretty, but Downtown is the main shopping hub, awash with everything from art galleries and independent boutiques to artisanal stores. Pick up classic Nantucket Reds at Murray’s Toggery Shop, rare reads at Mitchell’s Book Corner, and exquisite home décor from Nantucket Looms.

Crowning the sandy dunes of Nantucket’s northernmost tip on the Coskata Coatue Wildlife Refuge, Great Point Lighthouse commands over the rolling Atlantic that laps below. If you’re up for the seven-mile walk to reach it, strap on your walking boots, but otherwise, a 4x4 is the best way to access New England’s most powerful light. Pick up a Jeep from a rental shop in Town, and, starting at the gatehouse, drive straight up to the

Great Point lighthouse over the sandy route. Look for basking seals and skittering shorebirds along the magnificent coastal scape while you bump over dunes.

With waters still dip-worthy until early October, you’ll still be able to unfurl your towel on a Nantucket beach in Fall. The best? For neverending golden sandy stretches, head to Madaket and Ladies in the south. Serene and less crowded, they’re perfect for long walks along the shoreline, picnics, and blissed-out sunsets. Or for gentle surf, make your way to north shore beaches like Jetties, Steps Beach, Dionis, and Brant Point.

Each year, the 1st of October heralds the arrival of several Nantucket food harvests. It’s the start of scalloping season , where Nantucket Bay scallops (the world’s most coveted, in fact) are harvested by hand and boat. If you fancy recreational scalloping for these plump, buttery, and sweet delicacies, off-islanders are invited to apply for a one-week permit and, armed with a snorkel, mask, and net, may dive to retrieve your shell-encased reward.

Just like whaling and lighthouses, the annual cranberry harvest is innately interwoven into Nantucket’s cultural

landscape. For over 150 years, this zingy red fruit has been grown in the island’s wetlands, namely the Milestone Cranberry Bog — the world’s largest contiguous cranberry bog, measuring an extraordinary 234 acres. In Fall, Milestone Cranberry Bog hosts the annual Nantucket Harvest Fair where visitors can see how their tart fruits are harvested before joining in merrymaking alongside live music, shows, and contests.

ARRIVE-DEPART

Nantucket Memorial Airport (ACK) offers direct flights from several major cities on the East Coast. Alternatively, you can fly into one of the nearby airports such as Boston Logan International Airport (BOS) or T.F. Green Airport in Providence (PVD), and then connect to a flight to Nantucket.

If a road trip is on your to-do list, determine your best route to reach one of the ferry ports that provide service to Nantucket. Depending on your starting location, you may need to drive to one of the ports in Massachusetts such as Hyannis or Woods Hole. Cruising time is just over two hours.

WITH PILATES OF CASHIERS’ OWNER

Ever feel your fitness level fluctuating? Once your routine has faltered, it can be tough to hit the ground running and either muster enough motivation to visit the gym before work or skip your usual Happy Hour. Pilates centers on the belief in moving at your own pace. While it can be intense, its foundation is built on mind-body connectivity. The goal is gradual growth, not instant gratification.

Founded by Joseph Pilates in the early 20th century while working as an orderly during the First World War, Joe built the first iteration of the “Cadillac,” a Pilates staple, to assist his patients who were unable to walk. Over time he honed his practice and, in the early 1920s, opened up his gym in New York with his wife

Clara using his method called “Contrology.” Enhancing his rehabilitation work, the apparatus became popular in the dance community for its ability mend dancers’ injuries, bringing the likes of George Balanchine and Ruth St. Denis to strengthen and recover between performances.

Pilates of Cashiers’ Alexandra Warren is a devoted student and teacher of the Pilates method. She graciously shared her studio (conveniently located in the same building as our office in Cashiers!) with NC Living to provide insight into her instruction and experience. So, dust off your Lululemons and fill up your Larq water bottle for an invigorating Pilates session.

NCL: CAN YOU TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT YOUR JOURNEY INTO BECOMING A PILATES INSTRUCTOR?

AW: Growing up, my family’s active lifestyle continuously quenched my thirst for maintaining a physically healthy lifestyle. That foundation led me to my first mat class while living in Ft. Lauderdale, and I was hooked. Eventually, that passion led me down the instructional path, first at the YMCA in Charlotte, NC, and later obtaining my Power Pilates certification.

NC LIVING FALL 2023 137

NCL: WHAT CERTIFICATIONS OR TRAININGS HAVE YOU COMPLETED AS A PILATES INSTRUCTOR?

AW: I received my Pilates certification through Power Pilates’ Comprehensive Training Program. This classical Pilates program requires 600+ hours of apprenticeship, studying anatomy, observation, self-practice, and client training. The program solidified my passion and deepened my knowledge and experience, preparing me for my job at Absolute Pilates in Charlotte. There, I had the honor of working alongside a brilliant, Romana-trained instructor who cheered me on in my journey to opening my own studio here in Cashiers.

NCL: CAN YOU EXPLAIN THE BENEFITS OF PILATES TO SOMEONE WHO’S NEVER TRIED IT BEFORE?

AW: In a nutshell, incorporating Pilates into your fitness regime allows you to do life more efficiently and effortlessly. The exercises strengthen your core — a group of muscles in the abdomen, glutes, and inner thighs — thereby enhancing your body’s movement. With a regular Pilates routine, your body will feel aligned and limber.

NCL: HOW DO YOU HANDLE DIFFERENT SKILL LEVELS IN A SINGLE CLASS?

AW: Because apparatus work requires hands-on instruction, we offer private and duet sessions

for those interested in working on the reformer, Cadillac, tower unit, and barrel. Our Mat Pilates class accommodates six clients because of its flexibility. Clients move at their own pace while I cue them on modifications throughout the workout.

NCL: WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE SOMEONE JUST STARTING OUT WITH PILATES?

AW: Be consistent, persistent, and give yourself some grace. Each session is different; therefore, do your best that day. Over time you will see the growth.

NCL: HOW DO YOU ENSURE A SAFE ENVIRONMENT FOR YOUR CLIENTS DURING THEIR PILATES PRACTICE?

AW: Providing a safe environment is nonnegotiable for any training session. As a classically trained instructor, every client who walks through the door should feel comfortable to test their limits with the belief that we know how far to push them. Clients should feel empowered to openly communicate with me throughout the session about their current physical and mental limits.

138 SILVER CREEK REAL ESTATE GROUP

NCL: HOW DO YOU MANAGE CLIENTS WHO HAVE PHYSICAL LIMITATIONS OR INJURIES?

AW: Keeping an open dialogue with each client is critical. We need to know their current limitations and concerns to provide the best possible instruction. That knowledge allows me to observe and make adjustments where necessary, allowing them to gain confidence through each progression. Because many of our clients deal with osteoporosis, I elected to take specific workshops to better educate myself on the condition and best practices in Pilates. This allows me to guide them through exercises best suited to their condition. At the end of the day, we all have our strengths and weaknesses. Just showing up is half the battle.

NCL: HOW DO YOU MEASURE PROGRESS OR SUCCESS IN YOUR STUDENTS?

AW: Body alignment is the first area I focus on with a Pilates newbie. We want to open their awareness of their body being held at center. This is honed over sessions to correct misalignment and strengthen the correct muscles to perform an activity. “Mind over muscle” is a key concept in Pilates. Once that concept is mastered, your journey has just begun because there is always another skill you can master, stretching from the primary to the secondary powerhouse.

NCL: CAN YOU SHARE AN INSPIRING STORY WHERE PILATES SIGNIFICANTLY IMPACTED A CLIENT’S LIFE?

AW: It’s difficult to single one out because I have had the honor of witnessing so many inspirational transformations. One of my clients, new to Pilates, has struggled to find a fitness regimen that works well with her autoimmune disease. After working with her twice a week, she has felt mentally and physically stronger, providing a noticeable boost in confidence. The pride in herself is such a rewarding experience to witness and a testament to the Pilates concept.

NCL: HOW DO YOU APPROACH DESIGNING A NEW PILATES CLASS OR PROGRAM?

AW: The practice of Pilates is a regimented set of exercises and classical sequences, so there is no need to design a “new” program. Joseph Pilates’ brilliance was in understanding the human body and creating a system, both mat and apparatus, that connects each progression. Rather than a new progression, I work with clients to adjust their form tailored to their fitness level and conditions.

NCL: HOW DO YOU INCORPORATE MINDFULNESS OR MENTAL WELL-BEING INTO YOUR PILATES CLASSES?

AW: Pilates is built on six principles: control, precision, centering, concentration, breath, and flow. These work together to promote the “holy trinity;” mind, body, and spirit.

NCL: WHAT ARE SOME COMMON MISCONCEPTIONS ABOUT PILATES THAT YOU WOULD LIKE TO CORRECT?

AW: Flexibility. Rather than it being a pre-requisite to practicing Pilates, it is in fact the benefit of Pilates. Another common misconception is Pilates is a woman’s workout. An ironic belief as Joseph Pilates clients were primarily men.

NCL: HOW DO YOU MAINTAIN YOUR OWN PHYSICAL FITNESS AND WELL-BEING?

AW: My morning starts with a ride on my Peloton and light weights before heading to the studio. Because we are, thankfully, busy at work, I go through a few Pilates exercises first thing in the morning or between clients. After work, I walk our English Cream Golden Retriever, Teddy, 3 or 4 miles. Sitting still has always been a challenge for me!
