While Halloween isn’t really celebrated here in Africa where I live, it is a holiday I’m more than happy to adopt. I actually love it more than Christmas now. I start my Spooky Season on the 1st of October with a list of horror movies and ending the month with a massive monster party, no expense spared. In this Spooky issue we take a look at a horror movie icon in our mod section, we have spooky looking Sims filling up our magazine and even Granny Ruth got really into the spooky mood so go check-out her costume. With the changing of the seasons, one part of the world going to sleep and the other waking up, we are also reminded that the year is nearly over and this is the last bit of silliness before we launch into the holiday season. So, enjoy your candy, fun costumes and horror movies this month before we all get pulled into different directions over the holidays. Happy Simming Sue

Well, September was a pretty exciting and hectic time for Simmers, wasn’t it? We had all the hype surrounding the refresh of Spa Day, which was fantastic. It gave us a new trait, three new aspirations, the ability to paint our Sims nails and a bunch of new Build/Buy content. It also gives us hope that more packs will have this type of treatment in the future. Not only did we get these, but also some great new game-play bits and bobs. You can now start a Yoga class anywhere, no longer are you

Next up, we had a weekend to try out Eco Lifestyle for free! Yes, that’s right, you too could check out Knox and his friends and the many build/buy and CAS assets that are in this packed EP, along with the richer and more interesting game-play that Eco Lifestyle gives.

restricted to spas and gyms. Sims can also lead guided meditation sessions. And children can now participate in both of these activities! The other pretty cool addition to those additions, they also added face masks to the game for those of us with Spa Day. As with most of these types of interactions, they come with various benefits and designs. If you don’t have Spa Day, don’t worry, the Base Game update also gives you the ability to add painted fingernails and toenails to your Sims. The team also gave us a look at the new Laundry List for this month:

We have also had some teasers about the #SeasonOfSelves: We’ve had some information on the next set of Kits that will be releasing soon. Incheon Arrivals, a Seoul inspired CAS Kit as well as the Fashion Street Kit, an Indian Inspired CAS Kit and another CAS Kit that is yet to be

announced, as well as a hint at a Modern Sanctuary Build/Buy Kit! Sooo much new stuff is heading our way!

And last but not least, with patch 1.80.69.1030, we also had 1,200 new variants for 149 Base Game assets. That’s right, you heard right 1,200 new variants for 149 Base Game assets. Finally we have some decent

As well as new swatches for all 64 windows available in the Base Game, so now you can makes sure that all your windows are matching, oh, and you gardeners and landscaping lovers weren’t left out, we now have some interesting swatches for the planter boxes and garden pots, alongside some new colors for plants!!

blinds and curtains to use in our Sims homes

I feel that we have been incredibly lucky in September, the Sims team really went all out last month to bring us so much amazing new content and it looks hopeful that this sort of treatment will continue into October!

Ah. October. A time of changing leaves, autumnal builds, and pumpkin spice everything. October is the official start of fall. It is also the month when Halloween becomes the hottest topic on every news feed. Unfortunately, it is no secret that The Sims 4 is lacking and is extremely PG compared to its predecessors. In fact, when it comes to the Sims 4 franchise, many players feel that Halloween falls short.

Whether you own the Seasons Expansion, use the Spooky Stuff Pack, or dream of an expanded base game, there are plenty of spooky scenarios in The Sims 4, some that you can create with your sims, and others that may just happen at random.

Sadly, if you hope to experience Halloween in Sims 4, you must manually add it to the game as a custom holiday. To do this, you need to have the Seasons Expansion pack installed. Without this pack, there is little that players can do to create Halloween in their game... With that said, the Spooky Stuff Pack, which is very immature in its content, does give players Halloween-inspired items. So, if you want to celebrate Halloween with the Sims 4 but you live on a tight budget, this stuff pack might be the answer.

6 Creepy Scenarios To Create This Halloween in The Sims 4.

You can use cheats to prevent alien abductions in your game, where is the fun in that?

Alien Abductions: Sims 4 has a few occult's that make the game more interesting. Besides Vampires and Mermaids, there are aliens. The great thing about the aliens in Sims 4 is that you do not need cheats to bring them out of hiding. Aliens can be found almost anywhere. Your Sims lovely neighbor who bakes the most delicious cookies and tends her immaculate garden, or that hot guy flirting with your Sim at the bar could be an alien in disguise.

One of the scariest parts about alien abductions is that they often result in male sims returning to earth pregnant. The outcome is a tiny alien baby. While still only objects in Sims 4, these babies usually have blue or green skin and strange powers. However, when you give birth to an alien baby, you will be given the option to send the monstrosity back to its mother planet or raise it as your own. Still, this option only appears for a short time, and if you miss it, then you better become a proud alien parent real quick.

Aliens entered the Sims 4 as a life state with the Get To Work Expansion Pack. These extraterrestrial Sims come from Sixam (Maxis backwards), a secret lot found in the game using Rocket Science or the Scientist Career.

While abductions happen at random in The Sims 4, you can encourage or discourage them using the satellite dish that comes with the Scientist career. A Sim in this career has a higher chance of being abducted by aliens.

10

Pro Tip 1: Increase the chance of an alien abduction by taking an interest in aliens that you meet. Check out alien night at the local pub and make friends with some extraterrestrials. Pro Tip 2: Join the scientist career. At level 4 of this career, your Sim will unlock a satellite dish that allows them to contact aliens. Alternatively, the out-of-this-world desktop computer works the same way the satellite does and increases the chances of your Sims being whisked away to Sixam for some serious probing. You can also use the telescope to contact aliens if you want the opportunity for an out-of-this-world vacay!

Note: You can use cheats to gain access to these items without joining the scientist career. 'Til Death Do Us Part… Or Not. Death in The Sims 4 is a common occurrence. Whether your Sims die from drowning, starve to death despite having unlimited access to food, perish due to embarrassment after peeing their pants in public, or get eaten by their beloved cow plant, this life simulation game is as much about death as it is about life. Sims die in some interesting and ironic ways. Once a Sim has died, they become a ghost and will often stop by for a visit, call t o congratulate you on your promotion at work or your new romantic relationship, and be seen at various places around town. This can get super awkward when the ghost is your husband, and he is dead because you killed him in the Black Widow Challenge! Hauntings are even more common in The Sims 4 than death itself, but they can m a ke for some seriously twisted gameplay. Embrace the fact that you can reconnect with dead relatives in The Sims 4, and be thankful that you can't in the real world. Pro Tip: If you are really missing your loved one, here is a tip to create some interesting game-play. Once a Sim dies, you can summon their ghost and add them to your family by using Shift + Click and selecting 'Add to Family.' You can then interact with them as you would any other Sim in the world, including having WooHoo with them. The Grim Reality Of The Sims 4. The Grim Reaper, or Grim as he is fondly referred

to in the community, has been a longstanding character in The Sims franchise. While Grim's primary purpose in the game is to reap the souls of all those sims that you have trapped in your pool or locked in your basement, he can be enticed to step away from his job briefly. You can be romantic with the Grim Reaper in The Sims 4. When you ask the grim reaper if he is single, he will respond with a witty reply, most of which state 'he is too evil for love.' Despite claiming he is disinterested, you can flirt with Grim, and you will form a relationship over time. You can also go on a date with Grim, but it will take a lot of work to achieve this as Grim tends to be pretty aloof. However, flirting with Grim produces a 10% chance of having him spare a sims life when requested. Children tend to have the best luck when pleading with Grim, showing players that he is not pure evil. Pro Tip: The Grim Reaper can be made into a playable character by using testingcheatstrue. Simply enable this cheat and Shift + Click on Grim and select 'add to household.' This action allows you to control the grim reaper and romance him, or even Woo-Hoo with him. However, many people have said that trying for a baby with Grim is not possible without mods, but you can always give it a go and see what happens. Note: Playable Grim Reapers come with a few flaws. For example, if a Sim dies while Grim is part of your family, the game will spawn a new Grim, and then there will be two. You can add the second Grim to the household as well and create your own little Grim Reaper Army/ Make Things Interesting With Vampires.

11

Vampires is one of the creepiest aspects of Sims 4 and happens to be one of my biggest personal regrets in life. Vampires have come to my house to bute my Sims in the middle of the night so many times that I was constantly stressed about it happening. Thankfully, this option can be turned off in the game's settings, and you can set your front door to disallow Vampires. However, if you are a horror fan, why not utilize my fear to create your storyline? An evil vampire that is determined to taste everyone in town could make for some simtacular gameplay! Pro Tip: Luckily, the game spawns lunch characters no matter what time of day you are out wandering, so take your evil vamp for a stroll and see if you can terrorize the townies. The Paranormal Is The New Normal. The Paranormal Stuff Pack for The Sims 4 was a well-received addition to the franchise. With tons of new stuff, from Create-A-Sim items and Build Buy objects to in-depth gameplay and a new career. When playing with the Paranormal Pack, your Sims can become a Paranormal Investigator. This career turns your Sim into a medium. With the help of Guildry – a friendly ghost that holds your hand during gameplay – you set out on a strange and somewhat spooky adventure to rid the world of ghosts. The Paranormal Stuff Pack and all that came with it allow you to create some spooky scenarios for your Sims. Pro Tip: Utilize the build buy objects and the Haunted House lot trait to scare your Sims and yourself. Having ghosts spawn at random has to be at least a bit scary. Stop Clowning Around. One character of the Sims 4 that can be downright disturbing is the Tragic Clown. While not scary in personality, the appearance of the Tragic Clown can be pretty upsetting to anyone who has coulrophobia - an unnatural fear of clowns.

12

Sunny, the Tragic Clown, came into the Sims with Livin' Large and is a well-known and annoying aspect of the game. The first time this character appears in your game, you may run screaming from the screen. (Especially if you have not played earlier versions of this franchise). Sunny is summoned after a sim admires the Tragic Clown painting and makes life difficult by making your Sims miserable. While mildly disturbing and highly annoying, the ways to get rid of this pesky presence are worse than the clown itself. You can burn the tragic clown painting, and the clown will also burst into flames and seemingly die! There are other options as well. For example, you can sell the picture or slap the clown until he is happy. In past games, you could hire a clown catcher to rid your lot of this unwelcome guest. However, unlike previous games, in Sims 4, the Tragic clown is generated at random and is not an independent character. Which, if you ask us, is even more disturbing because anyone could be the Tragic Clown in disguise! Pro Tip: Want to have some fun for Halloween? Dress up as the tragic clown! The entire outfit, including facepaint, can be found in cas. Like Grim, you can add the clown to your family. If the ideas above are just not enough to keep you awake at night, there are plenty of gruesome, violent, and dark mods out there that will leave you shaking more than your head. All you need to do is run a quick google search for scary, violent, or horror mods in Sims 4, and your darkest dreams can become your reality. Happy Simming!

Boo! It’s the spooky season! Here in South Africa, we don’t celebrate Halloween as other countries do. I think some people celebrate it, but it is not that knock on the door on the night kind of thing. Anyway, it was quite hard to find people to feature who does Halloween content. So, I had to look for someone and I found AissieSimmer. Lisa, also known as Aissesimmer online, is quite a talented simmer. From streaming to making her own content on YouTube, she is quite busy. She is from Brazil and she has been playing Sims for about 20 years.

14

At the moment on her YouTube channel, she has quite a few challenges going on at the same time. They include Rags to Riches, the 100 baby challenge, and the Not So Berry challenge. I am not even sure where she gets the time to do all 3 of those challenges.

In between all those challenges, she also finds time to post some speed builds of houses using no CC content. She also goes back to older Sims games in the franchise, playing The Sims Medieval.

Tell me a little bit about yourself? Hello! My name is Pierick, I’m 26 and I come from France. I’m a huge fan of the Sims since I was 10yo. Building houses is my favourite part of the game and thanks to that I discovered the architecture world and wanted to become an architect until 18 yo, it’s then I discovered CGI while trying to reproduce buildings. I learned a lot on YouTube during high school and my first year at university. I’ve always been very attracted by the cinema, and becoming a cgi artist instead of an architect was the best thing for me!

what is it like to be a CGI student Being a CGI student is a very nice experience. I met a lot of awesome people while learning and practising my passion. I have spent the best years of my education here. I had the chance to be in a school where it was a very close relationship between the student and teachers too. I’ve also just finished my studies and the end was very intense. We had a short movie to produce in two year. We were 5 to make our short movie and it helped us learn a lot of things about CGI but also about ourselves, how we can manage our stress or how to be able to give the best of ourselves in a short amount of time. The last month was the most intense as we almost slept at school or didn’t sleep at all but that was one of my best memories because it was shared with friends.

How did you get into making CC for the Sims?

18

I was not a huge fan of CC at first, because I like to play with matching items. Then I discovered a bunch of maxis match items and installed them. After like a year of playing with them, and after practising CGI for several years, I decided during the first lockdown (in France) to try making my first item. I discovered a brand new world opening under my feet. And that’s really satisfying to be able to add items you want into your favourite game! Also, I needed a student job to pay my tuition fees, and making cc was a good way to manage the time at school and time working on CC.

When did you start playing The Sims? I starting playing the Sims at a friend’s place, when I was 10. He used to play this game for a few months so he explained to me how it works etc and I really liked the amount of possibility we had in the game, and the ability to build houses as we wanted. Unfortunately I wasn’t able to play a lot because I didn’t visit him often. Then I had the Sims 2. Our computer was very laggy and crashed often, but I finally could really play with it! Sometimes with my mom who joined me and we used to create a bunch of funny people and make ridiculous stories with them.

Where do you get inspiration for your amazing builds? Inspiration comes from a lot of things! I have a big folder full of references for my CG project that I also use for CC now, but I also took a lot of pictures of the places I visit. I also try to read often decoration/interior design magazines, and I spend hours on Pinterest too. There’s almost everything on

created? I don’t really know, I’m still learning about making CC so there is all a progression and it’s hard to have an objective point of view, but I think I like Tidying Up because it was my first one, but in terms of items I think it’s more the Calderone bedroom or the Coldbrew part 2.

this website!

Do you prefer building or decorating? I think I prefer decorating. I have a lot of ideas for building but it never comes as I thought it would be and I can I give up easily for this part, sometimes too easily

1What inspired you to do the COLD BREW coffee shop cc? One of my best friends and I used to go to coffee shops to talk or plan projects, talk about our lives, etc and those are places I really love. I made one for a school project, and I wanted to do one for the Sims. Also, it was a good opportunity to add items I love such as small teacups, teapots, etc.

What programs do you use to make your CC?

The first-ever stuff kit you made was Tidy up, what inspired you to make that the first kit you released? I don’t really know about this one. I know that I like cleaning my home, and my friends call me Monica sometimes (because of Monica Geller from Friends) but I think it’s more because it’s full of « real life » clutter items that we don’t have in-game and that I missed.

What is your favourite CC kit you

I’m working

with the Sims 4 Studio, Maya, Blender, and Photoshop.

19

What advice would you give anyone who wants to start making their own CC? Go for it! Just try to have fun, don’t give up too soon if you just start 3D modelling because when you know how it works it really cool to be able to add what you want to the game. Also don’t hesitate to look around your home, ask others to get help also.

What CC creators inspire you? There are a lot of amazing creators and all of them have their own way to add great CC to the game. It’s difficult to quote only a few of them, but I really love CharlyPancakes, LittleDica, PeaceMaker, and some new creators like Max20.

Any sneak peek of what your next CC pack is going to be? Unfortunately not, I’m still a little bit late because of the last months and I try to catch up for the next month, but at the moment I only have boards of inspiration but not the real items. Find Pierisims on

This month StassiJSims4 pinned down the very funny You-tuber that is IronCGull Aka Julian. Storyteller, Community supporter, and occasional comedian, Julian opens up to Stassi about his Sims Lets Plays, staying current, and what’s to come.

Stassi: Tell me a little bit about yourself? Julian: I was born and raised in Canada with a mixed German and Sri Lankan heritage. I’ve been playing video games since I was very young. This led me to also become more computer savvy at a younger age. Later I would study journalism and communications for my post-secondary education. I even studied in Australia for a bit! Currently, I’m a content creator mainly focusing on YouTube, Twitter, and Twitch. I focus on The Sims but occasionally play Sonic The Hedgehog and any other games that interest me. The Sims is only one of many games I play!

Stassi: I can see that you started playing games when you were 3 years old, you started with Wacky Wheels on MS-DOS, for the kiddos out there what is Wacky Wheels? Julian: Wacky Wheels is a racing game featuring animals that have escaped from a zoo in go-karts! It plays very similarly to the original Mario Kart on the Super Nintendo. You can still buy it very cheap on GOG if you want to check it out!

Stassi: You said you started playing sims in grade 6! Did you start with The Sims or The Sims 2? Julian: I started with The Sims about a year after it came out. I still distinctly remember seeing that Sims House Party loading

screen the first time a family friend showed me the game. Initially, I didn’t understand the concept, but once I realised The Sims was about the fun aspects of life and not just level grinding to the top of the career ladder, that’s when it clicked. Never thought this game would change my life so much! I’ve played all 4 of the main series as well as some of the mobile games and spin-offs both on PC and console.

“Initially, I didn’t understand the concept, but once I realised The Sims was about the fun aspects of life and not just level grinding to the top of the career ladder, that’s when it clicked” Stassi: What is it like being an EA game changer? Julian: It definitely has its ups and downs. The most exciting part without question has been going to Sims Camp events and meeting the producers as well as fellow content creators while getting to play an early version of the newest expansion pack. Those have been some of the most fun experiences of my life. Never thought I’d get to film part of a vlog with SimGuruGraham in an actual ball pit in London! But the Game Changers title does come with backlash. There’s absolutely some valid criticism, but there are also assumptions that criticising the game means EA will cut ties with you or that you’re “ungrateful” for what you have. It’s also tiring seeing the biggest creators on the most mainstream platforms getting consistently better treatment than the others. Machinima makers, modders, and CC creators especially could use more

27

love. Recently the program got a revamp and now it’s the EA Creator Network. I’m not sure how much will change, but at least the name is more accurate to the marketing program it is.

Stassi: Let's talk about your Let’s Play Shared Universe? Julian: What I call my SimUniverse is heavily inspired by the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Instead of making a new save file for every let’s play, they all live in the same file I’ve used since The Sims 4 was released in 2014. While some series still end up pretty selfcontained, there are some like StrangerVille and Get Famous where sims from other series crossing over were crucial plot points. Plus, I’ve brought back many of my sims from The Sims 3 and my older Sims 4 let’s plays if they happen to fit the theme of the next series. I’m considering bringing back my Parenthood family in some form if we get a Generations-like expansion pack!

Stassi: Let's talk about Damon Mulligan, Strawberry O’Donnell, Sebastien Hawkes!! Julian: Wow, all fairly deep cuts into my let’s play history at this point. Rumour has it that Damon is such a hardcore rock star that he’s met the Grim Reaper himself! Strawberry is the younger sister of a leader of a band of pirates who got their start in Isla Paradiso. She loves the colour red! Sebastien has come a long way from escaping his ex-wife to starting a new family of vampires in Forgotten Hollow and becoming a member of my Syndicate superhero squad after helping defeat The Mother.

Stassi: What do you think makes a good LP? Julian: Definitely the story and the characters. Whether you’re basing the story around a new pack or a sim/family in

28

general, it’s important to have characters with some flavor that keep your audience coming back. It’s also good to know what tone you’re going for. Over the years I’ve realised taking a goofy humorous direction is what comes more naturally to me than doing really dark story-lines. I enjoy leaning into that Sims humour, glitches and all!

Stassi: What is your favourite LP series you have created so far? Julian: That’s tough. That’s like being asked which of your children is your favourite! However, my Get Famous let’s play is usually one of the first that comes to mind because of Janessa. My sims are usually nice to each other, but she’s very entitled and a huge snob which led to conflict with her co-workers and even her roommate Tori whom she had conflicting feelings for. She was a fun change of pace to play as.

“Rumour has it that Damon is such a hardcore rock star that he’s met the Grim Reaper himself!“ Stassi: What inspired your LP Series Lake? Julian: Funny story about how I heard of Lake. I was watching an indie games presentation, waiting for news on Paralives. I saw this compelling trailer that I thought could be an elaborate reveal for the “Live Mode” of that game. The art style looks similar! Turns out it was for Lake: a slowpaced, relaxing mail delivery sim in a small Oregon-inspired town that protagonist Meredith visits for 2 weeks during the mid-80s. I loved the idea of getting her to reconnect with old friends and making new ones, which leads to you choosing from a few possible endings. It felt so refreshing

29

and came at the perfect time after being burned out by a near-constant release of Sims content for a few months. It’s normally very difficult to get my audience of primarily simmers to watch anything not related to The Sims, but I felt Lake’s atmosphere would be appealing. Thankfully it has. Shockingly it’s overall doing a bit better than my Cottage Living LP!

Stassi: You have been on youtube for a long time, what is the biggest change you have seen over the years? Julian: Without a doubt, it’s the shift away from long let’s plays towards challenges, one-off game-plays, and discussion videos. I’ve noticed this not just within the Sims community but with gaming in general. I started off as a let’s play channel, so I was quite surprised when I tried doing news and speculation videos leading up to Sims 4’s release and saw much more people enjoying that content. That still is very true today as my channel has shifted to focusing on it. As much as I love reporting the news and speculating about what’s next for The Sims, it’s a little sad at the same time as I enjoyed doing let’s plays on a more frequent basis. But just like in many other industries, if you can’t keep up with changing trends, you’ll be left behind.

Stassi: What advice would you give anyone who wants to start making their own Lp's? Julian: What will make your let’s play stand out from what’s out there? Let’s plays are very saturated at this point. If you want that to be your main content you’ll have to think outside the box. Not a lot of people have the time to commit to a 30+ episode series anymore so I suggest doing something short and sweet, with plenty of drama. If there’s a lot of requests to keep the series going after the ending, you can always do a “Season 2" later!

30

Stassi: You said that Quxxn, Andrew Arcade, The Sim Supply inspired you to start your own channel, are there any other simmers that inspire you as well? Julian: Definitely! Those three are all examples of what I consider the OGs, the ones who laid the foundation for The Sims on YouTube. But there’s simmers such as Plumbella, Pleasant Sims, DrGluon, Carl’s Sim Guides, Doctor Ashley, GnomeFinder, and several more who I started watching in more recent years who motivate me and keep inspiring me to be…well, me!

Stassi: Any sneak peek you would like to share with us?? Julian: Recently we got a “refresh” for the Spa Day game pack. While I already did a video about how I’d refresh the game packs, I’m working on a series where each episode will focus on one expansion pack. With EPs being bigger and broader than GPs, I think this may be a better approach than cramming the current 11 all into one video at the same time, feeling pressured to move onto the next EP without talking about one for too long. It’s going to be an interesting experiment. The first episode which is all about Get To Work will likely already be out by the time you’re reading this. I feel this could be the kind of series that can keep people hooked since you don’t need to watch the previous episodes to know what’s going on in the new one. Cooking Sims.. Style With Granny.R

Delicious Spookiness

As a grandma I love baking cookies but I also love horror movies and heavy metal music so Spooky Season is the time of the year when all the things I love come together. From dressing up in silly, wild or scary costumes to making other Sims jump with fright, there is nothing not to love about Spooky Season. Seeing all the little children run around collecting candy always warms my heart but I prefer a more personal touch to trick or treat then opening a bag of store-bought candies. You too can be the treat of your neighbourhood with this easy spooky cookie recipe.

34

Cookies 125g butter, softened 1/2 cup (100g) brown sugar 1/2 cup (125ml) golden syrup 1 egg yolk 2 1/2 cups (375g) plain flour 1 tbsp ground ginger 1 tsp ground cinnamon 1/2 tsp ground cloves Orange food colouring 2 green sour straps 1m licorice strap Chocolate writing gel Edible glitter, to decorate 1 egg white, lightly whisked 1/2 tsp lemon juice 2 cups (320g) pure icing sugar

Step 1 Preheat the oven to 180C. Line 2 baking trays with baking paper. Step 2 Use an electric mixer to beat the butter, sugar and golden syrup until light and fluffy. Add the egg yolk and beat until just combined. Add flour, ginger, cinnamon and cloves and stir to combine. Turn onto a lightly floured surface and knead until smooth. Wrap in plastic wrap and place in the fridge for 30 minutes to rest. Step 3 Divide dough into 2 even portions. Roll a portion out on a lightly floured surface to a 5mm-thick disc. Use an 8cm-diameter round pastry cutter to cut discs from the pastry. Use a small sharp knife to cut small 1cm wedges from 2 opposite sides of a disc to create a pumpkin shape. Use your fingers to gently smooth and round the edges. Place in the fridge to rest. Step 4 Roll the remaining dough out to a 5mm-thick disc. Use the top half of a gingerbread man cutter to cut the head and arms from the disc. Use a small sharp knife to cut the bottom half into a ghost shape. Place on the remaining tray. Place in the fridge for 30 minutes to rest. Step 5 Bake in a preheated oven for 10-12 minutes or until lightly golden. Set aside to cool. Step 6 To make the royal icing, place the egg white and lemon juice in a small bowl. Gradually add the icing sugar to form a smooth paste.

Divide the icing into 2 even portions. Tint a portion using the orange colouring. Spread the icing evenly over each of the pumpkin shapes. Use a small sharp knife to trim the licorice strap into small triangles to create eyes and mouth. Attach to biscuits. Cut sour strap into 1mm-thick strips, wrap around a skewer to create a vine. Attach to the top of each pumpkin. Set aside to set. Step 7 Spread the white icing evenly over the ghost cookies. Pipe chocolate gel onto the ghosts to create eyes. Sprinkle evenly with glitter to create a shimmer. Set aside to set completely.

Hi everyone, I'm Josh! My pronouns are he/him and I'm 21 years old! I've been playing the sims since I was 5 and now I mainly play The Sims 4. I share a lot of my creations on twitter. I used to make a lot of house/room builds based on real life pictures and share them on my gallery. But since I started learning how to use Blender, now I primarily make sims render! I love making a *hypothetical* photo-shoot of Sims, mainly of premade Sims! Similar to my house and room builds, I usually use real life references too for the photo-shoot to make them feel more natural. Other than that, I do graphic design in my free time. My latest creation is a Sims 4 expansion pack concept based on The Urbz which you can find on my twitter and I'm planning to make more! Speaking of twitter, let's be friends there! I hope you all enjoy my content!

Chance is an eclectic fanboy, mental health advocate, aspiring superhero, and crafter of stories. Oh! He's also a console simmer, of course. Yeah, that means no mods or custom content over here. When he's not bringing life to CAS creations or stressing over the tiniest details in a build, you can find him laying on the floor scouring the depths of twitter. He has a passion for writing, reading, and meeting new animals. One day he hopes to live in a haunted lake house that is only sometimes visited by curious extraterrestrials. Hello simmers, I am Rusticsims although my real name is Ayessha, I am pleased to greet you and be able to talk about myself in this section that SimmedUp magazine has granted me. Mexico is my home country, although I do live in quite a historical port in my nation, whose attractions are its incredible beaches and its commercial port. I am currently studying for a career in business administration I also work in something similar to what I study. But hey, now we are going to talk about what you and I like so much, The Sims. An interesting phenomenon in my life that has remained constant and today I can tell you it is the best hobby I have ever had. The love and passion that I have for this saga begins from The Sims 2, although it had already captured my attention from The Sims, being that in my city in those 2000s it was very difficult to get this game, it took 4 years to be able to have my first copy of the base game of The Sims 2 in hands, I remember perfectly that afternoon in September buying the best investment I could make as a teenager experiencing the digital world. Love, at first sight, happened when I opened the game on the desktop computer and saw the first house, analyzed its details, the floor, the paint on the walls, the furniture and that was when it captured my full attention as part of many afternoons of trying to create constructions that at first were square boxes and without a sense of aesthetics, but how I had fun making and unraveling families, creating tangled stories, going out to find appointments with Mr. Big or perhaps looking for a lot to vacation in that Takemizu Village that it came in the Bon Voyage pack.

unraveling families, creating tangled stories, going out to find appointments with Mr. Big or perhaps looking for a lot to vacation in that Takemizu Village that it came in the Bon Voyage pack. Spending some time and almost jumping to The Sims 3, I began to improve the quality of my constructions which I would share in Spanishspeaking forums showing my creations, at that time the Sims resource began to be a very needed cc object store and I decided to start uploading my constructions, wallpaper creations and floors that to date are in force in my user geneva (in fact in the banner you can find the word Rusticsims). Returning a little from the transition from the Sims 2 to The Sims 3, it cost me a lot of work and some money because I did not have a good computer that allowed me to run the Sims 3 with

excellent graphics, which were quite demanding. With the Sims 3, it was more of a creative exploration than playing as demanded in The Sims 2, but I had a lot of fun in the CAW creating a world, which due to lack of time I could not finish and creating stories with the same character from the expansion of Late Nite.

By this time and creating a new world in the CAW, a huge curiosity began to grow to create personalized content, talking about furniture sets, but it was very complex for me to sit in a 3d editor and see as many buttons as a rocket ship to which You don't know which button to press. Although everything was honey on flakes, a small streak came where my computer broke down and other things called life put me on pause for several years so that I could resume this hobby of building, and as I was in the process of entering college too. Family aspects made me stop for a long time to continue with The Sims. It was not until about 4 years ago that I decided to resume this old necessary habit and I come across many new features now with a version 4 that I have taken a liking to as I did in the previous sagas. Currently, Rusticsims has been able to consolidate more stably and continuously thanks to the social media that exist such as YouTube. This has allowed me to make art with speed builds, stop motion, machinimas, and tours, etc. This for me, has made it very interesting since it has been an entertaining way to share content and express a very entertaining visual art, which

my followers are captivated and new ones are captivated by.

Rusticsims, a rustic corner where the most creative ideas get embodied by some artistic means.

In the immediate future, we are planning to open our space in Patreon where I very gladly invite you to know the personalized content that I have been silently creating in my workshop, but at the same time noisy because of the details and complexity that it takes to create custom content in the game.

Finally, I would like to encourage all those who intend to create content, be it a video that you want to upload to a platform, an image, a render, or this part of creating, they should try and if we like the result, try again until they are satisfied with what they do.

The personalized content that I will be creating will be concepts of minimalist art and perhaps one or another thematic set of constructions that I have already made and they will be to complement and to give greater game satisfaction to those who download this content that will be set, this does not mean that we stopped building fabulous houses, this new section adds to grow what is

I share my social networks so that you do not lose sight of the news that I am constantly sharing, I appreciate the opportunity to be able to write in this space that this wonderful magazine gives me and I thank the SimmedUp team for choosing me for this issue. Do not forget to give your powerful like and subscribe to my channel simmers, a hug XOXO! Rusticsims

Cities Skylines is a city-building game developed by Colossal Order and published by Paradox Interactive waaay back in 2015. However, they do keep releasing awesome DLC to keep the game fresh and interesting. You start off with a plot of land, which is equivalent to 2km² and an interchange that is an exit and entrance to a nearby highway or motorway along with a starting amount of money. I have loaded up one of my games that is not very pretty, nor very advanced for the purpose of this review. This is The Valley

graveyards and/or crematoriums). The most important category in this game in my own experience is how you structure your road network, this is also one of the more frustrating parts of the game. Especially when your firetrucks can’t get to a fire due to it being rush hour and they are stuck in a huuuge long line of traffic. What I adore about this game is how hyperrealistic it is. In order to use your coal power plants, you have to have enough coal stored within them, again, this is where good road/rail networks come in handy, as your power plants can’t generate power when the trucks carrying your coal are stuck in traffic. The game has four distinct zone types which is one of the core dynamics of the game. These four zones determine what type of buildings will spring up in the areas next to your roads. You have residential, commercial, industrial and later in the game, offices.

As you can see, this place is fairly newly formed and consists of its original plot plus one more that I have managed to scrape together funds to purchase. The initial stages of city management is to piece together utilities such as road network, electricity, water, education, public services, healthcare, emergency services, public transportation, waste management (here’s a tip, don’t put your town’s drinking water source downstream from your waste management site, or if you do, expect to have to build many

The wonderful thing about zones is that you can have different policies for each zone, so you can make a totally agricultural or forestry industrial area, which is perfect for those areas with high amounts of fertile lands or forests. Which you can find by looking at one of the many

63

information overlays available. Shall we take a closer look at one of my suburbs? Now, I admit that I am a total noob when it comes to building in this game, all my cities look exactly the same. They are all based on the square blocks. This is because these blocks make planning easier, there is a reason, after all, that most American cities are laid out like this after all.

The game has a real element of progression to it, as only basic buildings are available to you at the start of the game, elementary (or primary schools), small medical clinics and firehouses, basic low-density residential, commercial and office buildings. One of the most amazing things about this game for me as a Sims player is that each home is lived in by an actual family and you can find out a lot of bits of information about your cims (as they are called in this game). This car, for example, belongs to Kathleen Williams, and you can see that she is an educated teen, on her way to her high school. By clicking on the blue text you can see which high school she is travelling to (if you have more than one) and her home, shall we go take a look where she lives? This is Kathleen’s home, and by clicking on it you can see how many cims live there currently, their ages, education level and

64

the population density of the home. The higher the population density, the more cims can live here and the less area you will need to house more cims in your cities. There are very vague objectives about how you can increase the population density of each home, Kathleen’s home, for example, needs more educated cims to inhabit it before it will increase in density. The homes in this game look fabulous and can provide some awesome inspiration if you are stuck for what to build next in your Sims game You also have the ubiquitous budget to worry about, after all, it takes money to run a city, even a city as small and crappy as mine Here is the economy tab, it shows what your budget is for each type of service, from road maintenance to power and water, right through to how much you spend on your education budget. You can also change the budget for the time of day, for example, your schools function mainly during the day, so by lowering the amount you budget for them at night, you free up funds to spend elsewhere. I absolutely adore this game and would thoroughly recommend it to anyone who enjoys city management games. It is in-depth without being completely overwhelming. Cities: Skylines is available on the Steam store.

Covering your old school favourites from the sims franchise

Top 5 Most Haunted Locations in The Sims Spooky Season is finally upon us, and what better way to kick off Retro Corner than with a list of my top 5 most haunted lots in The Sims Franchise. I’ll admit, this piece was difficult to write; primarily because, there simply aren’t that many premade haunted houses in The Sims franchise. Fortunately, us Simmers have been given the creative freedom to determine whether a house is haunted or not through gameplay, application of certain traits to buildings, themed decor, and whether we choose to have active ghosts roaming on our lots. After all, we are the builders, the storytellers, the creators and the killers. So without further ado, let’s jump straight in. 1 REMINGTON POINT | THE SIMS 3 STORE | RIVERVIEW All graveyards are spooky, it’s a given fact, and Pleasant Rest Graveyard in The Sims 3 is no different. With gravestones dotted about the lot, placed amongst greenery and flowered shrubbery, this beautifully enchanted lot becomes something else after midnight. Even the Death Fish makes an appearance in the cemetery's pond. However, graveyards are stereo-typically known for their paranormal activity, and so for this article I’ve chosen a haunted residential lot to kick off our Top 5 Haunted Houses. Back in the day, Riverview was a countryside-style world available to download for free from The Sims 3 Store. Residing in Riverview at 1 Remington Point on top of a hill are the Jones’s. Their house is haunted by Hannah’s previously deceased family who all mysteriously died in different ways, as indicated by their different coloured ghosts. However, it is unknown as to how they died in these mysterious ways. GOTH MANOR | THE SIMS BUSTIN’ OUT | SIMVILLE Obviously I couldn’t not include a lot from The Sims Bustin Out in our list. Goth Manor is a classic in my opinion. The interior is furnished with chandeliers,

68

synthesizer, skeletons, paintings and spooky decor. Like most locations in the game, this lot features its own climate and atmospheric conditions to add to the theme of the lot. So naturally, regular thunder and lightning storms add to the already haunted theme. In addition, the ghosts of Morty and Wailla Goth haunt both the building and Bella and Mortimer Goth between 10pm to 4am every night until the Simmer decides to host an exorcism. The ghosts are a translucent blue. THE VON HAUNT ESTATE AND GARDENS | THE SIMS 4 GET TOGETHER | WINDEBURG You may find a familiar lot advertised somewhere in this issue. I’ve failed to find any other exclusive premade lots in The Sims 4, there isn’t even a graveyard! Fortunately we were given The Von Haunt Estate and Gardens with Get Together. Located in Windeburg, this premade house is enriched with the fascinating yet devastating history of Lord Bernard and Lady Mimsy Shallot who’s presence still remains. This community lot poses as a tourist attraction with placards detailing the tragic events that unfolded all those years ago. THE HOUSE OF FALLEN TREES | THE SIMS 2 NIGHTLIFE | DOWNTOWN Shipped with Nightlife’s exclusive neighbourhood; Downtown, The House of Fallen Trees is an empty residential lot available to purchase for §85,505. Residing in this abandoned lot are the ghosts of Fricorith and Gvaudoin Tricou, and Rainelle Neengia. The Tricou’s deaths remain a mystery, whilst Rainelle Neengia was scared to death after the Tricous’s ghosts. The eerie ambience of this lot cannot be removed; after dark, the dimly lit interior cannot be brightened no matter how

69

many lights are placed on the lot. As a child, I definitely found something odd about this lot, even in build mode, I couldn’t make the lot naturally brighter either. 13 DEAD END LANE | The SIMS 2 | STRANGETOWN I've saved my all-time favourite lot till last. I’ve briefly glossed over this lot in a previous edition of SimmedUp Magazine as it linked in well with the historical background of Nervous Subject. For some, 13 is an unlucky number, and combined with the name, “Dead End Lane”, it already suggests an unnerving atmosphere. 13 Dead End Lane has a mass graveyard located behind the home. The lot is haunted by these ghosts and the circumstances behind their deaths are odd. There is no concrete evidence as to how they died, and whether the current occupants; Olive Spectre, had any part in them; although some Simmers have their theories that Olive is in fact, responsible. The name Spectre is also a synonym for spirit or ghost, further adding the paranormal, eerie atmosphere of the lot. Furthermore, there are also numerous theories suggesting that the Grim Reaper is Nervous Subjects’ biological father, and with an ever growing mass graveyard, Grimmy was a regular visitor. This is a lot full of Easter eggs, hints, and historical context that we wouldn’t find in premade lots from The Sims 4. This lot, and others in the previous game just have that inexplicable, uncomfortable feel to them that we just can’t put our finger on.

Thank you for reading, and as always, we appreciate the continuous support. Join me next time, as I dive into the wonderful retro world of The Sims. Melissa x

GLovely Who is GLovely? I’m a wife, mother, teacher, creator, giver and big time lover of all things sims!

How did you come up with the Quick Creative CAS Challenge? I’ve always loved hosting random creative gallery challenges. I’d mainly host room challenges and CAS challenges which were coordinated in the gallery only. When our world changed dramatically in March of 2020 and we were all quarantined due to the Covid pandemic, I knew I had to do something bigger to support our sims community through such an extremely stressful time. I chose the forums as my main challenge home for a few reasons. I’ve always admired Rosemow’s weekly room challenges located on the forum and figured we could use a weekly(ish) CAS challenge there too. Also, there is a large, dedicated section on the forums for challenges which is pretty easy to find and the forum is the main location for information on Maxis Favs and nominations. Nominations are a big part of my challenges and creators happily deliver great things I can nominate weekly! I’m so thrilled to say that there have been 20 Maxis Favs awarded to QCC entries so far after 40 creative themes! Let’s keep that trend going!

What is your favourite thing about The Sims? Oh gosh, there’s no way I could name just one thing lol! Those who know me know I’m such a talker so I could go on and on about all of my favourite Sims things.

72

We’ve been getting some pretty awesome game updates lately which I’m definitely loving but I think right now I would have to say I love all of the friends, collaborators & helpful simmers in this beautiful community that I’m blessed to know.

When did you first get into The Sims? I actually started with Sims 3 in 2009 and was instantly hooked. I found a copy of Sims 2 at a garage sale a few years later and dabbled in that gameplay a bit, however, I went back to Sims 3 almost immediately. Now, I’ve been happily playing and creating in the world of Sims 4 since 2015.

Which one of The Sims do you like best from 1-4? The best by far for me personally is Sims 4.

For those who don’t know, what is Maxis Fav and how can Simmers get my Sims nominated? I feel a Maxis Fav is one of the greatest

single honours a creator can receive in the gallery. They are a tradition in the gallery which gives any creator, whether they are new, veteran or at any level in between, visibility and recognition in the gallery. To get nominated specific to households, a creator would need to use only game content (no cc) and share to the gallery without using custom poses. I strongly recommend a story to go along with your sims too.

What would you say should Simmers look for when nominating a household, room or build for Maxis Fav? I would first say, “please take an 5 extra minutes out of your day to make someone else’s day special and go nominate! Anyone can give a Maxis nomination on the forum or Twitter and I’d love to see more simmers sharing thoughtful nominations. It truly does feel amazing when one of your nominations gets selected. When I see something I not only admire but am blown away by due to the imaginative uniqueness of the creation then I have to nominate! There are some

basic guidelines, for example sims cannot be in custom poses, but all guidelines can easily be found on the Maxis nominations forum thread.

What are The Sims Forums? Basically, the forums are the official site for all things Sims! You can share and find news, opinions, tips, creative showcases, challenges and so much more.

With so many social media platforms to interact with other Simmers, why do you think the forums are still relevant? There is a wealth of history woven throughout the forums that I’ve always found extremely helpful. From “how to appease our gnomes during Harvestfest” to the humorously entertaining patch notes, there honestly is something for every simmer on the forums. So many times when I do a google search for something sims related I receive a search result that takes me to the

73

Why do you love CAS so much?

forum. It’s a bit outdated, sure, but the vast amount of information there makes up for it.

The Sims forums can be a little daunting for a new comer, what is your top 5 tips for those joining the forums? The best tip I can share is that the search bar is your best friend :) It has never let me down when I go to the forums looking for something. Also, the “Welcome to the Forums” section is very helpful. I definitely recommend a visit to Rosemow’s “Hello! Come and introduce yourself” thread. Another tip would be to remember there is an organisational flow to the forums so always start at the 4 major menu tabs at the top. Lastly, pop on over to my QCC forum thread as there are so many wonderfully creative people there willing to help!

How do you pick a theme for QCC’s? I love to try to take something we have in game and flip it into something more. Sometimes I’m inspired by an upcoming pack or holiday. Many times my ideas will come directly from my personal gameplay. I also get into voice chats with my Planet Sims Discord friends & we brainstorm themes. I’ve also had wonderful opportunities to collaborate on themes with talented simmers like you Sue! The Deadlands is definitely in my top 5 favourite themes!

74

I love sculpting and styling in CAS mainly because we all need at least one good sim to actually “play with life” in the land of the sims. Trying to create different looks, different story-lines, different ways to engage other players to try something new with a sim I’ve created is so fun. It’s the best feeling to hear from a simmer that they are getting hours of enjoyment playing with the sims I’ve created in their households. I also fall in love with gameplay over and over again with a wonderfully created sim, especially if it’s created by someone I admire.

Is there anything you’d like to change or add to CAS? The easy answer would be the colour wheel right lol :) Personally though I feel like body hair is desperately needed. I really must have a good pair of cc eyelashes to play now so an update that brings lashes and all other body hair would be welcome.

What other games do you play? Not many actually. I do enjoy a quick Mario Kart race and I was into Planet Zoo for a bit but there just aren't enough hours in the day. The free time I do have is mainly spent in some aspect of the Sims.

What other Sims projects are you working on? The other Sims projects that are close to my heart right now are continuing to build my Twitch streaming channel and community as well as Planet Sims Discord which I co-own and manage. MOD REVIEW Life Tragedies Adds a Halloween Horror Icon

BY Sue ‘Kill Em all’ Simming

Sacrificial is undoubtedly the king of Sims murder with mods like Extreme Violence, Sim Torments and Life Tragedies. These mods give you access to creative ways to end your Sims lives whenever they displease “The Watcher” and as this Watcher loves Spooky season more than Winterfest, I went looking for something more Halloween to add to my game and found the one and only Jason Voorhees in Life Tragedies. It’s been a lot of fun watching him slash and choke his way through The Sims 4 population. First thing’s first, who is Jason Voorhees? “Friday the 13th is an American horror franchise that comprises twelve slasher films, a television series, novels, comic books, video games, and tie-in merchandise. The franchise mainly focuses on the fictional character Jason Voorhees, who was thought to have drowned as a boy at Camp Crystal Lake due to the negligence of the camp staff. Decades later, the lake is rumoured to be "cursed" and is the setting for a series of mass murders. Jason is featured in all of the films, as either the killer or the motivation for the killings.” Wikipedia Not to be confused with Michael Myers from the Halloween franchise.

Now that we have that all sorted out, let’s take a look at the mod. Before activating the mod it’s best to familiarise yourself with everything the mod adds to your game so you can turn off anything you don’t like. These tragedies occur autonomously unless you disable that feature too so be careful. Some things the mod adds are fatal illness, armed robbers, car accidents and of course, serial killers. I find bullies, armed robbers and serial killers very annoying in my everyday play and disable them immediately but they are great for storytelling purposes so give them a try in one of your not so special saves.

I decided the best way to kick off Spooky Season would be to murder a bunch of teenagers at a remote camping site. My cast included all the horror movie stereotypes. The airhead hot blond and her jock boyfriend, the nerdy girl, the hippy chick, the edgy street-smart girl, the preppy dude, the weird yet hot new transfer from another school.

With everything packed, these seven teens set of for Camp Gem Lake as counsellors for the young scout troops that will be staying there for the summer. Little do they know that the camp is

79

cursed and a mad man in a mask is sharpening his machete in anticipation. Who is your money on to survive this slasher? To begin, disable all other tragedies except for serial killers. When everyone is in place, click on serial killers, no mercy and select Jason Voorhees. If you don’t do this, the game will spawn random serial killers like the nanny or the son of flames. Also, if you don’t select the no mercy, Jason tends to kill one or two NPC’s and then just walk around for a bit before disappearing. You can’t make a slasher movie with just two dead bodies now can you.

Once you select Jason, the mod will spawn him at the edge of Granite Falls or neighbourhood you are camping. I have to admit that I wish Jason and only Jason spawned when you get to Granite Falls but even thought I’m not a modder myself, I imagine this would be difficult to do. Jason’s look is spot on and the fog that surrounds him makes it all feel like your Sims find themselves in a horror movie. Even the classic ch ch ch, ah ah ah sound is added to this mod and can be heard when Jason kills a Sim. Chilling stuff

But Jason isn’t just a mindless killer, he also

80

likes to BBQ and stargaze. I had to spawn him multiple times to kill off the teen counsellors because he had so many other things he wanted to do. Honestly, if he took the time to go fishing, I might have died of laughter. He did take a lot of naps though but killing is hard work so I get it.

There is a glitch you need to watch out for. Once Jason starts his killing spree and Grim shows up to collect souls, Grim gets stuck because there are so many bodies (I guess, I’m not a modder so I don’t know for sure if this is the problem). The other small glitch that happens is Jason has such a big ego, he isn’t even scared of Grim and will try to kill him. Since Grim is death itself, he doesn’t die and just stands around. This means you can’t save your game or exit the lot. Best thing to do is enable cheats, click on Grim and the dead bodies and select reset object. This should fix the problem

without any damage to the save. Life Tragedies is a great mod for more edgy stories but without going too far. Jason Voorhees is a classic Spooky Season character and I can’t wait to see what

stories are born after he slashes his way through your game. In the end, The Nerdy Girl and The Airhead Hot Blonde survived the murder and mayhem becoming close friends but as they look at this picture and notice a figure in the background, they realise that this is far from over. *Que the seque* ch ch ch, ah ah ah

It’s finally spooky month and whether you love it or hate it, you are sure to be bombarded by spooky builds on your favorite social media sites. Give the crowd a fright and create your own terrifying haunted houses! Paranormal Stuff Pack brought with it the ability to create an actual Haunted House in the Sims 4. With this spooky new lot type, Sims will gain assistance from friendly ghosts like Guildry or be haunted by other not-so-friendly entities with this spooky new lot type. Sure, you can simply change the lot type of your current home to the Haunted House Residence, but where is the fun in that? If you want to create the scariest house possible this Halloween season, we have some tips that can help!

When creating a haunted house in The Sims 4, two things that can help make it memorable...

Choose a Spooky Location: Where you place your haunted house is as important as the items within..If you own the Vampires game pack, you may want to consider building a home in Forgotten Hollow. The mist-covered landscape of Forgotten Hollow is the perfect setting for a haunted build, and the threat of evil vampires lurking in the shadows outside your front door waiting for an opportunity to suck your blood makes it even creepier.

Add Some Lot Traits: The Haunted House lot type is only one of the ways you can make your house creepy in the Sims 4. Lot traits can also help you create a home that has Sims running for the Hills.

You can choose traits that make life in your haunted residence even harder. The traits below work well…

83

Get Inspired: Finding inspiration for your haunted house is a must. Browse sites like Pinterest, or do a Google image search for haunted houses to get an idea of what you want to build. If you are the type that likes to make homes using floorplans, look for plans of old, Victorian houses for inspiration.

Size Doesn’t Matter:

Cursed: Things just seem to go wrong here. Gremlins: Stuff on this lot breaks every night. Creepy Crawlies: The name says it all, better arm yourself with some raid and rat traps. Vampire Nexus: Vampires are drawn to this lot and are more likely to visit.

With these rules in mind, you are ready to start creating your creepy anode… Don’t be scared to experiment with different items, colors, and shapes to make this home as spooky as possible.

84

You do not need to create a mansion for your build to be scary. In fact, even a tiny home can be terrifying. If you are not experienced in building, start small. The key to creating a haunted house is to utilize the tools available to make it spooky. The new pond tool used with dark water and some crocs is a great way to add some fear to the front yard. Crack, stains, and other items found in the build buy catalog can help you create a house that will have Sims running for the hills of Henford.

The Color Scheme Will Set The Scene:

When you think of a haunted house, what colors come to mind? While haunted houses do not need to be dark and gloomy, a muted color scheme helps. Look around Forgotten Hollow, for example. Vlad’s mansion is dark and dreary and looks like it holds secrets within its walls. Mimic this look on your own house, and your Sims will be hiding under the covers in fear.

The debug catalog in The Sims 4 is an amazing tool for building any type of structure. You can access debug items in the Sims by entering the following into your cheat console (opened by pressing ctrl + shift + c)

bb,showhiddenobjects and bb.showliveeditobjects

You can then access a plethora of new items by searching the term “debug” in the search bar at the bottom left of the build buy menu.

A Closed-Off Floor-plan is Far Creepier: Haunted houses tend to be older homes, usually from the Victorian era and style. These homes, while possibly updated today, tend to have a more closed-off floor plan. Each area of the house is a separate space and colors change and shift throughout the home. . A closed-off floor plan helps make a home spooky because you never know what is behind that wall or around that corner.

*Note: TwistedMexi has a fantastic mod that puts debug items right in your regular catalog. The Better Build Buy mod has a learning curve, but once you are used to it, this mod makes life so much easier and objects more accessible. Be sure to check out this and other mods by TwistedMexi today! Use items from the regular catalog and the debug menu to add grunge to your haunted house. Cracks on the walls, stains on floors, and creepy dolls sitting in a corner can all help you to create a

85

terrifying environment for your Sims. Explore the debug menu and find some new and exciting items for your haunted house, but be warned, you will get lost in this catalog for hours on end. Luckily, the Sims 4 Build Mode makes creating a haunted house super easy.

Utilize all the amazing tools available within the game to build a spooktacular haunted house this Halloween. Just remember, the most crucial part of building a haunted house in The Sims is to have fun…After all, that is what Halloween is all about!

Making a Wambels is starting to make a big impact in the community with his stop motion youtube videos and individual room builds.

Wambels

I got the opportunity to sit down with him to find out how he does all of his videos and when he started playing the Sims.

SulziSim: Tell us more about who Wambels is. Hey everyone, I'm Wambels! I started my Youtube channel around 6 years ago with some speed builds and create a sim video that I did in The Sims 4, and I'm a huge fan of other games as well (such as Minecraft and Cities Skylines) SulziSIm: When did you start playing The Sims? I started playing The Sims 11 years ago, which is crazy how much time has passed since! I first discovered the game (The Sims 3) in a games store, thinking it was a city-building game. I was really surprised at the game, as it was a bit overwhelming for me, but I've spent days playing it nonstop! I consider it my childhood game and my favorite game of all time. SulziSim: On your YouTube channel, you have a lot of building videos. What got you into the building and not much gameplay? Surprisingly I was playing with a lot of households when I first started playing the game, I wasn't really a fan of building. But after spending a few years playing the game and learning more about architecture, I fell in love with build mode. The build mode in The Sims 4 has only motivated me to

88

a Simmer build more because it's so easy to do it in the game. SulziSim: What is your favorite building style to do?

My favorite building style has to be modern! I can look for hours at pictures of modern houses on the internet. I'm just amazed by the possibilities and the simplicity of the structures. Also, they always look so

89

good in The Sims 4. SulziSim: You have recently done some room builds. Have you enjoyed creating rooms in comparison to a larger build? Recently I've been focusing on smaller builds because it's more fun for me to build them than bigger builds. Personally, bigger builds are very tiring to build, so I tend to avoid them. But sometimes when I have the time and creativity, I build something a bit bigger. SulziSim: What is your favorite Sims challenge to participate in? There are so many challenges nowadays that I've been trying, and they are so

90

tricky and fun! My favorite one is the shell challenge, everyone is so creative with it, and it's so fun to see all the different results! In addition, as a builder, it really helps to expand your comfort zone and try something new. SulziSim: What is your favorite thing about the Sims community? The sims community is absolutely extraordinary! It's full of so many kind people, and the most creative creators I've ever seen! Everyone is so talented, and it's so fun to see all these unique creations every day. There are so many builds, drawings, sims, and concepts, and all of them

are truly amazing! SulziSim: You create a lot of stop motion videos. Where do you get the patience to do them as I know they can be quite difficult to film. You're right! Stop motion videos are definitely not easy to make. That's one of the reasons why I also focus on smaller builds more. It takes a lot of time and patience, and most of the time there are bugs. The process is frustrating, but the results are worth it! SulziSim: Do you have any other tips for our readers on how to grow their YouTube channel or social media platforms?

It's kinda obvious but very important! Consistency is the key. You can't expect to blow up in a second, it takes time! Although it may feel frustrating, you learn a lot from your mistakes and only get better. I often look at my early creations and realize how much I've learned. I would also like to add that don't hesitate to post your creations, as it gives you more opportunities to grow! Thank you, Wambels for your time. Please go and follow him on his social media accounts.

MEET THE GAME CHANGERS Ninnster 1. How did you become a Game-Changer? I joined the program in 2018 after submitting an application. It was when SimGuruKate was CM and they were trying to diversify their members by focusing on adding creators of all sizes from rarely represented platforms. I was chosen as a Gallery creator. 2. Who inspired you to apply for the Game-Changer programme? There are a lot of people I admire in the program, for example, Simarchy inspired me to start streaming, and Sims4creations, Aveline and Simproved are some of the many builders I adore, but they weren’t the reason I applied. I wanted to see if I could make it. That’s what it came down to. This was before I actually started on Twitch, so it was solely based on my gallery creations at the time and the small building community I had around me on the official forums and on Twitter. 3. What are your favourite and least favourite parts of the Game-Changer programme? Not sure I have favourites, but the program certainly has positives and negatives. A big positive for me was to get closer to the SimGurus and get to know them and how they work. They are so very passionate about what they do, and to me, they are all inspirational. They are able to keep their love for the game alive, despite the world of social media being such a volatile place. They all deserve high praise for the hard work they put in! As for the negative, I think I’d have to say communication. As much as they try to give us the information we need,

94

we are often left with holes, or the information given isn’t clear enough so that we are left not knowing what is expected. That can be hard to navigate. 4. How does being a Game-Changer fit into your everyday life? For me, it was never a thing to “fit in” anywhere. Joining the program never changed what I was doing, or my plans going forward. I felt like it was a title I earned, but I have never felt expectations from anyone in the program to have to grow bigger. My goal has never been to become a full-time content creator. It’s a hobby I am extremely passionate about, but I have a family and kids, and I have a full-time job that I love, so the Sims and the GC program is simply one aspect of my life. This I actually mentioned in my application too. To me, the fact I was still selected meant that they appreciated the community I had, and what I had accomplished and that it was enough. 5. If you could choose just one pack to keep, which one would it be and why? It’s a tie between getting Together, Cats and Dogs and Snowy Escape. If you twist my arm to make a choice I’ll say Snowy Escape since a Japanese inspired pack was my most wanted pack for the game and it has a very special place in my heart. For a game pack, it would be Jungle Adventure, and for a stuff pack, it would be Tiny Living. 6. If you had to get rid of just one pack, which one would it be and why? If I can go with game packs it’s easily Journey to Batuu, simply because I’m not a Star Wars fan. I can also easily name stuff

packs I don’t need; Luxury Party Stuff, Fitness Stuff, Spooky Stuff and My First Pet Stuff. For expansion packs, though it’s almost an impossible choice, I think I’d say Get to Work. I love the pack and I use it a lot, but compared to the others I think I could live without it. I think. 7. Do you prefer building, CAS creation or gameplay? Or something else entirely? Those who know me know I only do one thing: I build. I’ve played since the original Sims was released, but I used to play on and off. I would do gameplay intensely for 2-4 weeks, then I’d get bored and take a break for a few months until new content was released. This cycle continued until I decided to start building about 2 years after Sims 4 was released. I have barely stopped since because I just have so much fun with it! A less known fact though is that I do enjoy doing some CAS when I need a break from building. I really enjoy sculpting new Sims, but I have to admit I don’t like dressing them as I find that really tedious. 9. Where do you find the inspiration for your creations? Inspiration can come from a lot of places. It can be a house I see in a TV show, a house in my neighbourhood, or a house I see while browsing social media. The majority of my inspiration though comes from build challenges hosted by community members. We have some creative people out there who make great challenges with fun themes, and often they will trigger an idea and then off I go to build!

11. Where do you get the ideas for your challenges? They can come from many places. When I need to create a new challenge I, first of all, think about the season and month we are in. Are there holidays or events I want to use as inspiration? I take pack releases into account as well. Is a new pack planned, or has one recently been released? I also have a notebook of previously ‘not used’ ideas I can look at for inspiration. In the end, it’s whatever I feel like building that wins out. In my mind, if it’s something that inspires me, surely it will inspire others! I also try to diversify the different options in the challenge so I can cater to different types of builders, at different stages of experience. I strive to create something everyone can find inspiration in. 12. Who is your favourite SimGuru and why? The SimGurus are people, and they are all unique and wonderful in their own way. I think if you like a Guru it’s because their personality happens to be one you get along with, just like with friends. I can name a few I love and why. SimGuruNinja for always trolling the community at large, stopping by streams and generally being great at interacting with Simmers everywhere. SimGuruPopcorn for being warm and friendly, inspiring builders with her own build challenges and having a

10. What is your favourite social media platform for all things Sims and why? I would say Twitter because the SimGurus and the official Sims account are quite active and interact a lot with the community at large. The hype when the SimGurus start trolling before the release of a new pack, the latest news on what’s going on and seeing both the Sims account and the Gurus sharing posts from the community is the reason why it’s my pick. As it is a social media platform though it can be a volatile place, and I would recommend everyone to protect their online space and not be afraid to block/report/mute if needed.

95

welcoming streaming space. She’s also into DnD and anime, just like me! SimGuruNick for being on top of bug reports, answering posts from community members and posting patch notes and laundry lists. He does a wonderful job! Lastly, I’d also like to mention SimGuruFrost since he as the community manager has a difficult role, but I think he manages to balance it so well. I see him posting important information about releases, streams, packs, patches and maintenance, but I also see him answering Simmer questions, saying Happy Birthdays and trolling SimGuruNinja. The Gurus are all amazing! 13. Where can readers find and follow you If you want to check out my builds you can find me on the Sims 4 gallery under Gallery ID: Ninnster. On my Twitter, I will post all my creations and you’ll always find my current build challenge pinned on my profile. You can find me @Ninnster00. If you are on Twitch and enjoy live streaming you can find me there building twice a week, as well as touring challenges at the end of the month.

You can find me there every Sun & Wed at 8:30 PM CET/CEST: twitch.tv/ninnster

Facebook showcase

MissyNightHawk

MissyNighthawk is a Danish Simmer who builds a variety of different styles, she uploads speed builds of her creations to YouTube and showcases them on Facebook. I am going to start off by showcasing one of her more recent builds, Witches Cottage. She has built the save game file she is working on as part of one of her stories. The roofing on this build is fantastic, and her landscaping looks magical, yet natural. Her command of the terrain painting tool is fabulous! The interiors are so cosy and homey. There are so many cool little decor items in here, yet it doesn’t look overly cluttered somehow. I just love how she’s used such an eclectic mix of furniture from different packs and it all looks like it totally belongs together, this can be incredibly hard to accomplish!

102

The room where the magic happens has a similar feel, I really envy Missy’s cluttering skills. Her use of MOO to create all the custom stone furniture is just wonderful, and look at all the floor!

Having the lovely alchemy pictures on the wall is such a nice touch as is that cute little armchair tucked away by the door, for when your magical Sim just wants to sit and contemplate. There is a small half bath downstairs and the actual bath is hidden away on the tiny little second floor reached by a handily placed ladder. And the requisite bucket for helping fill it is provided as well. I’m not sure how much water would be left in it after my clumsy Simself reached the bath though The small bedroom is almost an afterthought, which I really like in a build like this, this place is built for alchemy and herbal-ism. It's so wonderful! The next build of hers I’m going to show you all is a Haunted House!! It just so happens that it was raining when I loaded this save up to show off this stunningly dilapidated Victorian, how very apt. Again Missy’s roofing work is amazing and I love how she has used the rooftop accessories to really give this place a proper Victorian feel. The crumbling stone walls surrounding it and the ivy and brambles along with all the closed shutters really give this place a feeling of neglect and abandon. Yes, that is a hand you see trying to escape from the ground on the wonderfully

103

sculpted path leading to the front patio. The landscaping for this build is simple, yet perfect, with lots of overgrown bushes, briars and not much else, although I did spy this gorgeous little bench just waiting for someone to come and unearth it. The front stoop looks appropriately unused, the tools were a genius touch, as they give the air that someone might be along at any time to come and de-bramble the grounds. And those scratches on the front door are genius, someone really wants to get in... The interior is just as wonderfully detailed as the outside, it’s all a bit gloomy and worn in here, but that’s just what you’d expect right? The front door leads you into this perfectly proportioned open space with a living area and kitchen, the holes in the walls, the spiderwebs and the dirt over the wainscoting all lend themselves perfectly to the theme. The decor is suitably old fashioned and her choice of window treatments is just perfect. There is also an office area in the large open plan space, and you can tell that whoever is staying here is very much looking into why the house is the way it is. Again Missy’s attention to detail is wonderful as are her clutter and decor choices. At the other end of this space lies a seance room at the other end of this space, which is perfectly proportioned.

104

I’ve covered the main living area, now onto the bathroom and bedroom.

The bathroom is delightfully grungy but still usable, and that arrangement of accent table under the mirror is awesome, I will definitely have to remember that trick. The bedroom looks like it would have been incredibly opulent in days gone by, which really is perfect for the style Missy has gone for with this entire build. I hope you have enjoyed touring these builds as much as I have! You can find Missy’s builds on the gallery under her EAID: MissNighthawk_YT, on YouTube as Miss Nighthawk, on Facebook as Missy Nighthawk and Twitter as @Eunagina

CHAPTER 2

A DAY OF EXPLORING

handiness, gardening, fishing, cooking and cross-stitching. Well, take care of yourself, I’ll be sure to check in on you from time to time.

We left Star after having an incredibly social day, bless her, she was all tuckered out, the pitfalls of being a loner I suppose.

Caretaker of Star Dew Farm

I left a note for her on her dining room table, while she slept, with some more information about the challenges she will face, here at Star Dew Farm.

Well, Star wastes no time getting to work on some of those skills, the first thing she does when she wakes is to find a local fishing spot and start work on her fishing technique. She caught a weed encrusted log with her first try, but she was determined that she would be completely self-sufficient and that meant being able to provide her own food! The fishing practise would continue.

Dear Star, Caretaker here, I just wanted to say welcome and that I hope you slept well. There are some rules that your Grandfather wanted you to follow and it is paramount that you keep them, should you wish to stay. Firstly, you are not allowed to seek any formal employment. That was his number one stipulation, he really wanted to see how you got on living just off of the land, as he did when he moved here. Secondly, there are certain items that he wished you to turn in to me, that would, in turn, make your life here more varied, interesting and maybe even just that little bit easier. He wished that you would get to know your neighbours as well, he worried about you living in the city, that you spent all your time alone in your apartment, with no friends as such. As you saw yesterday, the locals are a friendly bunch and they will be happy to help you out as long as the favour is returned. And the last thing I will leave you with is that he wanted you to work on your survival skills, the skills that will help you with all the other things he wanted you to achieve, skills such as charisma,

With the next bite, she feels a little more confident that it was something alive and not just some flotsam from the bottom of the lake. Lo and behold, she pulls a large green fish from the water. Thinking back to the summers she spent here with her Grandfather, she is almost certain that she has caught a bass. This is one of the items the caretaker mentioned in the list attached to his letter that makes up the fishing bundle! So, she is determined not to eat it, but to try again and see what else she can catch. Her next catch is something that she has never seen before, she thinks that it is some sort of gummy fish? Oh well, she will ask Michael when she sees him next, he seems to know a lot about the local wildlife.

Heading back to the cottage, she realises that she still has some of the fruit cake in the fridge that the welcome wagon brought with them. “That will do for breakfast,” she thinks. Her next task is to check on the seedlings that she planted yesterday. She is happy to see that they all seem to have germinated. She inspects them further. “Wait, are those carrots ready to harvest?” She exclaims to no one. Sure

Her first stop, when she arrives, is to see if the traditions she remembers from her childhood are still in place, searching beside Sophie The Snail, she is pleasantly surprised to find some chrysanthemums in the little hiding place. Checking her pockets to see what she can leave in return, she finds a Taro root and hides it back under the small stone. No trip here would be complete without the requisite selfie with Sophie herself! She is sure that she remembers her being a lot bigger, oh well, she supposes she is a lot bigger than the last time she visited this sacred place. Talking of sacred places, she takes a wander over to the ruins of the Isle of Volpe. She remembers picking wild mushrooms here with her Grandfather and also a delicious berry called a “chocoberry”;

enough, she bends down and harvests a bunch of tiny little carrots. “It’s not much,” she says to herself, “but it’s a start.” Remembering trips to the village as a child, she wonders if the market stalls still buy produce. Enjoying her own company after the social whirlwind that was yesterday, she heads out to the bramble patch that she used to explore. If she remembers correctly, there were some interesting plants that grow here that she has never found anywhere else.

110

she was never able to find any of these ingredients in San Myshuno. “ They must be some kind of village secret,” she muses to herself.

She enjoys an afternoon of wandering around the old ruins, finding all of the places she used to hide when she was a child. On her way home as the sun starts to set, she notices a flock of birds in an old hollowed-out tree, she remembers singing to them when she was little. So she tries it again. The little creatures seem to appreciate the song and she enjoys their company. She arrives home at dusk, to find another local standing on her stoop. She introduces herself and he reveals himself to be Derrick Moody, one of her Grandfather’s closest friends. She invites him in and they reminisce about the old man until Star realises how hungry she is. She politely shows Derrick to the door, asking him to pop round whenever he likes and heads to the fridge. She is sure she remembers Michael stuffing something into the fridge while she was

chatting to her other neighbours, and sure enough, she finds a delicious looking homemade cottage pie. She heats it up in the oven and settles down to the most delicious meal she has had in days. Feeling satisfied that she has done a good day's work on the farm, and explored some of the village, Star heads for bed with hopes for another fine day tomorrow. She is really hoping that those chocoberry bushes she saw earlier will be ready for harvest!

Sep 23 -Oct 22 With spooky season ahead, it’s time to have fun all around. The past is now to be forgotten and focus on the future and of whats to come. It’s hard to imagine a life where everything is where you wish or want it to be, but keep focused on your dreams and march forward with a smile on your face and your head held high. Everything you need is within arms reach.

Oct 23 - Nov 22 Every year we begin to approach this time and you get that feeling of trepidation deep within the pit of your stomach. Fear of losing what you have and starting again can be overwhelming sometimes. Remember that Fear is False Evidence Appearing Real, and know that as long as you believe in yourself, anything is and will be possible. Nov 23 - Dec 21 Once in a while we meet that person who reminds us of ourselves at a different time of our lives. You are about to make a connection with someone that makes you feel just like that. Use your skills and knowledge to support this person and they will return this back to you ten fold. Opportunity awaits.

Dec 22 - Jan 20 Pinched lips and horns at an angle, what has you so riled this month? It’s ok to be passionate about a cause, but is it worth it when we begin to lose those we love around us? Make sure to make time when asked this month, a little re-arrangement never hurt anyone and it may just keep those close to you ‘closer’, instead of pushing them away. Jan 21 - Feb 18 Where has your balance gone? Feeling a little unsteady and not sure where to take your next steps? That is ok, not knowing where everything is going is not a bad thing. Take this time to re-evaluate the direction you are headed and make sure the next step is the right step and all will become balanced again without a single miss-step.

116

Feb 19 - Mar 20 Just keep swimming, and please be rest assured I am not making fun of you. Keep on, keeping on and all those other sayings keep popping up, maybe its time to take the hint and keep doing what you are doing, because you are most assuredly doing everything right at the moment and that will help lead you to more opportunities.

Mar 21 - Apr 20 Hear no evil. People sometimes just cannot help themselves, they think being in the middle of all the gossip is such fun, but you have had enough of listening to all the bulls poop and this we can understand. Sometimes we just have to learn to let go of that person who really doesn’t have your back no matter how long we have known them.

Apr 21 - May 20 Motivation is the thing you are lacking right now, you are comfortable and happy to plod along, but be fair warned this month Taurus. Not everybody is happy with this care free attitude that you currently display and tensions are rising. Maybe it is time to start taking some responsibility and letting others know you are trying, even if it don’t seem like it.

May 21 - Jun 21 Your selfish attitude towards those around you is really taking it’s toll. It is ok to think of others first, it is ok to do things you don’t like sometimes especially if it is fo someone you love or loves you, we all have to compromise and that is the lesson heading your way. Just be careful how you learn this before it is too late.

Jun 22 - Jul 22 Things are looking up again this month and forget Halloween, your already thinking about Christmas. Your worries are unfounded and everything will be ok. Time is on your side, just be sure to budget accordingly and forget about treating yourself to that new item of clothing. Look after the pennies today and the pounds will look after themselves as they say.

Jul 23 - Aug 22 It only seems like yesterday you were celebrating your birthday and today you feel so far away from the buzz and excitement of that special day. Why do you need an event to celebrate? Celebrate just being you everyday, you are unique and perfect in your own way. You deserve respect and happiness, now go get it.

Aug 23 - Sep 22 Finally the end of a really long month is over and October is screaming at you to come have fun and frolics like a child again. Your innocent nature allows the October month to fill you with wonder as the leaves turn green to brown. And bring opportunities your way. Approach them like a child would and have a most grand adventure.
