10 Products You Need to Get Beach Body Ready for Summer
No, we aren’t about to push some infomercial-grade fitness DVD on you or extol the virtues of a crazy crash diet. Our beach body plan has much less to do with getting a six pack or fitting into your bridesmaid dress than it has to do with treating yourself to a little presummer pampering. To that end, we’ve compiled a list of 10 products that will get you feeling your best in time for summer vacay.
1. VITA LIBERATA
10 MINUTE TAN
The next time you want a litte glow, skip the pricey spray-tan and opt for this editor-endorsed selftanner instead. The product allows you to shower just ten minutes after application, so you won’t have to hang around home waiting for it to dry — or worry about staining your clothes and bedsheets.
3. TENOVERTEN MOTT
We’re deeming this bright pink polish—one of the best nontoxic nail polishes on the market, by the way—the color of summer 2023.
2. MIO BODY BRUSH
For luminous, clear, and healthy-looking skin, incorporate an exfoliating body brush into your bathing routine. This one boosts circulation by gently buffing the skin, creating a blank canvas for tanning creams and body shaping lotions.
4. CLARINS MASVELT BODY SHAPING CREAM
Generally, we don’t find that body shaping creams make much difference. But this powerful, science-driven toner from Clarins is the exception. After a couple applications, our skin felt firmer and smoother, with a visible increase in skin radiance and texture.
5. FITBIT
After working out in dingy, windowless gyms and crowded fitness studios all winter, we welcome the opportunity to take our workout outside in the summer. And the Fitbit is a great (and fun) way to track your fitness levels and ensure you’re still staying on target with your goals.
6. BRAZILIAN BUM BUM CREAM
Squats and dead-lifts not your speed? Get your derrière in tip-top form with this Brazilian bum cream—a rich, fast-absorbing lotion that uses guaraná, a native Amazonian plant whose fruit contains one of the most potent forms of caffeine on the planet, to increase firmness and skin elasticity.
7. BODYISM BEAUTY FOOD
If the thought of sipping a blend of spinach, broccoli, and barely grass makes your stomach turn, Bodyism’s Beauty Food is for you. The supplement contains all of those good-for-you ingredients – plus Marine Collagen Peptides, green tea extract, aloe vera, beta-glucan, and more– but tastes delicious (really, it does) when mixed with water or blended into a smoothie.
8. BABY FOOT
What with travel plans, outdoor drinking, and more meals out, summer can be hard on your savings — which is why Baby Foot, an exfoliating foot peel that obviates the need for pricey pedicures — is a mainstay in our summer beauty kits. A bestseller on Amazon, the product uses fruit acid to boost cell turnover and reveal baby-soft skin.
9. JOSIE MARAN ARGAN SUGAR BALM BODY SCRUB
This body scrub smells so heavenly, we look forward to using every time we shower. Plus, it leaves our skin super soft and oh-so-ready for shorts and spaghetti straps.
10. SHAVEWORKS PEARL SOUFFLE SHAVE CREAM
The one downside of summer temperatures (and the corresponding shorter hemlines?) More time spent shaving — but not if you use this game-changing shaving cream. The luxurious product is formulated with Capislow to minimize hair growth, glycolic acid to exfoliate and reduce ingrown hairs, and Mediacalm to soothe and moisturize.
TABON WARD IN SHEER ELEMENT: THREE FRIENDS CHASING THEIR DREAMS
Article By: Aya Furin-CampbellOn March 6, The Voice episode aired where the group Sheer Element made it past their Blind Audition to be on Season 23 of The Voice working with coach Kelly Clarkson. Tabon Ward is from Maryland and is one of the members of the trio that is Sheer Element. Now, as a University of Southern California graduate, he is chasing his dreams in Los Angeles with his best friends, Izzy Kaye and Jej Vinson.
Standing before The Voice coaches Chance the Rapper, Kelly Clarkson, and Niall Horan, Ward felt nervous and excited. Jej Vinson had made it to the Top 13 being coached by Kelly Clarkson on Season 16 in 2019. As a veteran contestant of The Voice, Vinson gave Kaye and Ward a pep talk to calm their nerves before the audition, reassuring them about how much hard work had brought them there.
Dreams don’t always come true overnight. Ever since he was a child, Ward has had a passion for music. While attending Holy Trinity in Bowie, Maryland he learned how to play four different instruments; the clarinet, the euphonium, the trombone, and the saxophone. “That kind of just catapulted me to wanting to do something in music,” Ward said, “Then I would do the plays at school and then after that, I was like singing is what I love.”
Growing up, Ward was surrounded by support from his loved ones when it came to working towards his goals. “My parents are my biggest inspiration,” Ward said, “They always pushed me to want to do what I wanted to do. They saw that I had a gift and they wanted me to use that to the best of its ability.”
Ward met Kaye and Vinson during his freshman year of college at USC. They formed their group as something to do for fun in 2020 and then one night in Ward’s apartment, the trio posted a cover of Ariana Grande’s “Only 1” that went viral on TikTok. After going viral, they decided to take their group more seriously, changing the name from 3D Vocals to Sheer Element in 2021 and becoming more consistent with and dedicated to their music.
“We’re genuinely all best friends so it is kinda cool to be able to work well with your best friends and make beautiful music that we enjoy,” Ward said, “We’re each other’s biggest supporters and biggest heroes.”
Now, in 2023, Sheer Element is being nationally recognized for their music, and are soon to be on The Voice coached by Kelly Clarkson. In speaking on his hopes for the future, Ward said, “I’m excited to learn from Kelly and gain insight from someone in the industry who could help and give tips and tricks and things like that. And also once the season is over, being able to utilize the news fans that we gained and release a whole EP that’s already written and ready to go. We’re super excited to finally release original music.” While the group has yet to set a date to drop their EP (Extended Play), Ward says it will be sometime this year.
“I know everybody says it but it’s really about just not giving up and continuing to put yourself out there,” Ward said, as advice to any artists who want to chase their dreams as well, “As long as you’re continuing to put yourself out there and you’re working hard really there’s nothing you can’t achieve.”

HOW TO STAY HEALTHY THIS SUMMER By Leilani Flint Seafood
Seafood is an excellent option during the hot months like shrimp, crab, and salmon. It is often lighter than other forms of meat and delivers a stronger sensation of freshness. Seafood is a good source of protein and is rich in heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids. VRBO VACATION RENTALS: Three Pre-Planned Getaways
Vacation Rentals by Owner, or VRBO, is a vacation property rental website that allows people to either list their vacation destination spots for rental or to book new and exciting rentals for vacation. With a system similar to Airbnb, VRBO provides a wide variety of places to stay all around the world. VRBO allows anyone to start by searching for a destination and filtering the search to fit their desired vacation perfectly. Filters include the number of guests traveling together, whether or not there will be pets, and the specific dates that you plan to arrive and leave. This makes it easy to quickly find the perfect travel destination rental within seconds. From that point on, it is fully up to you where you will stay!
For amazing family or group vacations, the options are endless on VRBO. Here are some of Simply Magazines’ top picks for rentals, as well as travel destinations and tourist attractions in the nearby areas of Akureyri, Iceland, Maui, Hawaii, and Ocho Rios, Jamaica.
Akureyri, Iceland
Iceland is an exciting travel destination and the home of some highly sought-after travel experiences. VRBO features a beautiful rental spot known as Hamragil on VRBO. Hosted by a premier renter and member, Jon Baldur Torbjornsson, this vacation hotspot has six bedrooms with nine beds, two full bathrooms, a kitchen and living space, a geothermal hot tub, a beautiful view of Iceland, and visual access to the Northern Lights. For around $342 per night (prices may vary depending on dates, taxes and fees not included), this spot is private and secluded, but still within about nine miles of the town of Akureyri. With a rating of 4.9 stars on VRBO, Hamragil is a great place for a family or group getaway.
The town of Akureyri has very little light pollution, making it a great place to see the northern lights, also known as Aurora Borealis. Winter months are the times with the highest probability of experiencing this one-in-a-lifetime sight, and Akureyri is a great place to do it.
Akureyri is full of other amazing tourist attractions as well, such as whale watching, an experience that many will never forget. Visitors who go on whale-watching tours can expect to see dolphins and harbor porpoises, as well as several other whale species that are common in the area such as orcas, blue whales, humpback whales, and minke whales.
Maui, Hawaii
For travelers who love to be in the sun and the ocean, VRBO’s Kanai a Nalu 401, in Maui, Hawaii, could be the perfect vacation spot. For around $280 per night before taxes and fees with possible varying prices depending on the dates, this condo is right on the beach with beautiful views from every window. With two bedrooms, two bathrooms, and a full kitchen and living space, Kanai a Nalu 401 can house up to four guests. There is a swimming pool in the center of all the condos, and the beach is only a few feet away. Mike Watson, a premier host, has a rating of 4.8 stars for this property.
While in Maui, snorkeling is one of the best ways to connect with the ocean and the wildlife around you. The
Molokini and Turtle Town Snorkeling Adventure Aboard the Malolo is an approximate five-and-a-half-hour tour, where tourists take a boat out to what used to be a volcano, where they can snorkel among sea turtles and other species of tropical fish. This tour includes swimming and snorkeling equipment, as well as breakfast, lunch, and beverages. This is a beautiful and immersive opportunity for those who love the water.
For adventure enthusiasts, ziplining tours are always a fun option. A zipline tour is an exciting way to see the jungles of Maui from a brand-new perspective while getting an adrenaline rush and possibly checking something off of your bucket list.
Ocho Rios, Jamaica
Jamaica is a beautiful travel destination and VRBO’s One Love Shack includes a lovely view of the ocean and beach access, a swimming pool, and hammocks for around $130 per night, before tax and fees, and with possible changes in price depending on the dates. The One Love Shack has a rating of 4.9 stars, and is owned by Jennifer Leeth and Tess Cornwell; mother and daughter premier hosts. This rental sleeps four guests, is within walking distance of local restaurants, and is just four miles away from the town of Ocho Rios, which is full of great tourist attractions and destinations.
One of the many things to do in Ocho Rios is a horseback riding tour through the countryside, rainforest, and ocean. No previous horseback riding experience is required for this adventure, and being able to ride a horse through the beautiful Caribbean waters is a unique and amazing way to tour the area.
For science enthusiasts, a nighttime visit to the Luminous Lagoon is a great chance to witness the dinoflagellates, organisms that give the water the appearance of glowing in the dark. This tour includes travel on land and by boat, as well as a stop to swim for those who want to. There are very few places in the world with bioluminescent water, and this is one of them.

HOW TO MAINTAIN THAT SUMMER GLOW FOR MELANIN RICH SKIN
Article by LeAnne RobertsProtect your skin from the sun. A lot of folks have heard that Black people don’t need sunscreen but that is simply false. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher to protect your skin from harmful UV rays. This is especially important for those who are prone to hyperpigmentation, as too much sun exposure can make matters worse.
Cleanse your skin twice a day: Use a gentle cleanser to remove dirt and oil from your skin, but be careful not to strip your skin of its natural oils. The summer heat can make your skin oilier than normal, so once a day won’t cut it.
Say no to ashiness and moisturize! Melanin-rich skin tends to get visibly drier skin than other skin types, so it’s important to use a moisturizer that is rich and hydrating. Look for products that contain ingredients like shea butter, cocoa butter, or jojoba oil.
Maintain a peace practice. Prayer, meditation, or dancing with loved ones all count! Living in such stressful times can affect your skin and overall appearance so do your best to focus on the positive. You can start with deep breaths and affirmations in moments of high stress.
Gently exfoliate regularly: Exfoliation helps to remove dead skin cells and reveal brighter, smoother skin. Use a gentle exfoliator once or twice a week to avoid irritating your skin. Consult a skin professional to know what exfoliator works best for your skin type.
Use products that contain antioxidants: Antioxidants like vitamin C and E can help to protect your skin from damage caused by free radicals. Look for products that contain these ingredients to keep your skin looking youthful. Shea butter is an example of a product that is packed with antioxidants.
Avoid harsh chemicals: Avoid using products that contain harsh chemicals like sulfates, alcohol, and synthetic fragrances. These can irritate your skin and cause dryness and inflammation.
Be gentle with your skin: Treat your skin gently and avoid harsh scrubbing or rubbing. Use a soft cloth or your fingers to cleanse your skin, and pat your skin dry instead of rubbing it with a towel.
Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of water to keep your skin hydrated from the inside out. This will help to prevent dryness and keep your skin looking healthy and radiant.
