Renovation Project
Case Study
Rhode Island College Art Center has opened as the new home for the fine arts on this college campus, uniting programs that had previously been scattered into different buildings and occupying spaces illsuited for their programs. The renovation and addition project was conceived as a complete transformation of the existing Art Center, into a durable, safe and light-filled space for creative pursuit. The original one-story building was constructed in 1958 as a library, student center and dining hall, and converted into a studio arts building a few years later. The art studios lacked natural light and the building had many health and safety problems. The project team conducted extensive workshops with arts faculty and students to set out goals for the new Art Center, and then set out to expand the existing building to meet their needs.

Within the 54,000 sf expanded building there are now programs for a dozen separate artistic disciplines, each with dedicated spaces properly equipped to handle their equipment and processes. A two-story addition at the south end of the building, the second floor of which is clad in copper, provides additional space and a new main entrance at the front of the campus.

Renovation Project
Case Study
A student gallery and extensive display spaces along public corridors provide an ever changing backdrop. State of the art digital classrooms and a new lecture hall have created opportunities to engage the community with lectures and events, and spaces for socializing provide serendipitous collaborations. Most importantly, to the architects and the client, the new Art Center is filled with the natural light that is so important for the arts and that had been lacking in the previous building. Large northern-facing clerestory windows bring light into the painting, ceramics and sculpture studios, while in the center of the building, three large monitors allow light to penetrate the interior. The copper facade has already begun to develop a rich patina, playing off the campus standard tan brick.

The Museum of Art, Seoul National University (MoA), located beside the university's main gate, serves as a contact point for the university and the local community. With U-glass exteriors and steel-framed trusses, the architecture of MoA features a unique design that resembles a gigantic sculptural work floating in the air.
30
Renovation Project
Case Study
The interior of MoA, with a floor area of 4,486.47m2, consists of three stories and three underground levels. The dynamic spiral passage in the center connects the wings on two sides, making the museum an open cultural space. MoA’s entire structural design, the likes of which are rarely seen in Korea, organically connects exhibition spaces, a lecture hall, an auditorium, and various other amenities like a media lounge and cafeteria.

From the architect. The Royal College of Art, the world’s leading post-graduate art College, have opened a new academic building as part of a £61 million masterplan for the institution. The Dyson building, designed by awardwinning architects Haworth Tompkins, is the most significant new development to the Royal College of Art since it moved to Kensington Gore in 1962 and forms the centrepiece of the RCA’s new Battersea Campus.

The building is conceived as a creative ‘factory’ both in the industrial sense (as a place of industry), and through the reference to Andy Warhol’s Factory as a place of art production. A large central ‘machine hall’ forms the heart of the building, designed to house the large printing machines used by artists, around which the learning, business and gallery spaces are arranged. A key characteristic of the RCA’s success is the fluid relationship between programmes. The building has been designed to create “horizontal drift” between disciplines, and the creative processes take place in highly visible proximity to one another. The cross-fertilisation of ideas that is present and encouraged on the courses also is enhanced through the additional inclusion of InnovationRCA within the main building, blurring the boundary between the academic and the commercial. InnovationRCA provides business support and incubation services to help students and graduates protect and commercialise pioneering design-led technologies successfully. 46
